Kenosha, wisconsin. Ladies and gentlemen, New Hampshire executive order 63, please wear your masks. Could you hear that . They were asking folks to wear their mask and at that trump rally, there was a big sound of boo. Is this a sign of things to come . At a trump rally at a fears among his base. But joe biden and Kamala Harris warns us this is all happening in trumps america. The state of the race with just 66 days until the election. With that, we say good morning to you. Its saturday, august 29th. Almost the end of august here. Im cory kauffman. And im candace gibson. Its tough to say good morning on a day like this. 2020, i know we always put it like its 2020 and 2020 has been an awful year, but then it continues to push and push and just make things difficult. Four months to go, still, and everybody has been describing this breaking news that were starting with off the top as a gut punch. Actor Chadwick Boseman, who played iconic roles in the black community, Jackie Robinson, james brown, Thurgood Marshall before exploding into worldwide fame as the black panther, he has died of cancer. He was only 43 years old. The reporter Robert Kovacik from our station knbc has details and looks back at bosemans career and life. Reporter just after 7 00, a statement from his official twitter account. It is with immeasurable grief we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman. I accept your challenge. Reporter we know the man who was the black panther, the superhero who captivated us on screen, was fighting every day for his life. Thank you, thank you, thank you very much. Im so happy to be hosting saturday night live. Chadwick boseman never discussed his diagnose publicly, but tonight the statement reveals he was diagnosed with stage iii colon cancer and battled the last four years as it progressed to stage iv. That battle has ended. Its really sad. Its heartbreaking. His opinion matters. Where the future was going. Reporter grief from englewood to hollywood, from the nfl to the mlb. The actor Chadwick Boseman, who played Jackie Robinson in the movie 42. Mmhmm. Has passed away. Reporter the dodgers, all of them, wearing the number 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson. It was the movie 42, and a role that would launch Chadwick Bosemans career. His portrayal of Jackie Robinson, the first black man to play in Major League Baseball. Boseman would go on to star as the god father of soul, james brown. I only represent innocent people, people accused because of their race. Thats my mission. I never touched that woman. Reporter as the first black Supreme Court justice, Thurgood Marshall. And Chadwick Boseman played the first black superhero in the megahit, black panther, one of the highest grossing films of all time. He created this character that really provoked the imagination of black people and others. The dean of social sciences at ucla, darnell hunt, says you cannot underestimate the impact of that movie. It was really about afro futurism, about possibility, about the highest aspirations of black people around the globe. Boseman was a Howard University graduate and classically trained in drama at oxford. He was an actor and he was an activist. Dreams still lives. And my dream is that our youth can reach their full line of potential without the threat of gun violence. Reporter bosemans alltooshort film career will not be forgotten because the roles were memorable. And now we know they were filmed between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. This was the last time we saw the black panther, dressed in a suit in avengeravengers en but we will be able to keep Chadwick Boseman with us, a true fighter, on screen and off. So sad to hear of his loss. You remember seeing Chadwick Boseman right here on msnbc a little while ago. Yeah, that was back when the film marshall came out, in 2017. He sat down with our own joy reid to discuss how the theme of racism tackled in the theme compared to present day. You see how the north sort of hid its racism, and thats similar to what we experience today. Its different words. We live in a, you know, racefree society. Like, we think just because we had a black president that all thats done now. People look at the advancements that africanamericans have made and they think all of that is in the past. And theyre just witnessing, you know, some cream that came to the top, not, you know, the countless neighborhoods that have basically desert food situations and schools that are still not up to par. And so all of that is, you know, why this movie ranks true right now. Were going to have much more reaction to the death of boseman throughout the morning, including more of his 2018 speech at Howard University, where he went to school. It was an amazing speech. I listened to it again this morning, talking about being a student there and talking about the protests that were taking place on campus. And kind of makes you think, wow, many of those people who were listening to that then in 2018 are probably some of todays protesters who listened to chad bose paman back then. And probably stood up to start an action of their own, who listened to him back then. And a lot of people are saying he filmed all of these iconic roles and some of them very physically demanding roles while he was fighting colon cancer, but also, he remained so active with the community and furthering the message of, you know, the civic unrest in right to get to a better place, even towards the end of his life. And speaking of civic unrest, there were perhaps some of the students who came from Howard University who were out on the mall yesterday, on the nations capital, demanding change for the countrys criminal justice system. New generations of leaders speaking at the site where the reverend Martin Luther king jr. Called for reforms decades ago in his iconic i have a dream speech. Of course, the country marches in solidarity, coming at a time of nationwide unrest and ongoing protests over Police Shootings of unarmed black americans, black men. Nbcs jeff bennett has more. Reporter thousands of demonstrators lined the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and packed the National Mall to demand justice, 57 years to the day after dr. Martin luther king jr. Delivered his seminole i have dream speech at the march on washington. We didnt just come today to have a show. Demonstration without legislation. Will not lead the change. Reporter the reverend al sharpton organized the event, following the Police Killing of george floyd to channel the outrage into action. Activists calling for policing reform while demanding equal access to the ballot box and an end to systemic racism. Fridays march taking place during a summer of protest over Police Violence against black americans. The latest, 29yearold jacob blake, shot 27 at times in the back at close range by police in wisconsin. His father traveled to washington for the march. We havent moved too far in 60 years, because when oppression is oppression, it only allows you to move so far. Reporter that sentiment shared by others we talked to. I hate for my daughter to see on social media her father getting killed. As a black man, youve got to be so strong, so powerful. I cant show my tears. You know what im saying . Thats going to make me look weak. And if you show the tears, it gives them the power again. I have a biracial family and we have our first son is going to be born in a couple of months. And when he learns about everything thats happening now and he asks me, well, what did you do, i cant tell him i cant look my son in the eye and tell him, i sat and i scrolled twitter, you know . Its important for me that i show him, your dad was there, your dad showed up. Are you going to march . Definitely. Yeah . Yeah. How do you think youre going to feel . Ill probably break down and cry, to be honest with you. Americans are marching together, many for the first time, and were demanding real, lasting, structural change. Reporter after the speeches, the tens of thousands of demonstrators set off to the Martin Luther king jr. Memorial, while fighting to make his dream ring true. Jeff bennett, nbc news, washington. We appreciate jeff for that report, reporting for us from washington. Thanks, jeff. To decision 2020 and 66 days to the election. And fresh off the convention, President Trump is picking up where his 72minutelong acceptance speech left off, slamming democratic nominee joe biden at a Campaign Rally in New Hampshire and telling the crowd, they wont be safe until Bidens America again, hes referring to nownowadays america. And theres trumps america, which we should get into as well. Josh letterman for us at the white house. Break down what the president is saying. Reporter after sticking largely to the script in his 70minute speech to the Republican National convention this week, the president was back to his usual style of ad libbing and riffing as he rallied supporters last night in New Hampshire, but interestingly the message was very much the same. It boils down to this. In joe Bidens America, you will not be safe. And its a message centering around law and order that really the Trump Campaign that be congealing around in the past few days. That old messaging about joe biden not being apt mentally, kind of falling away with a real focus now on law and order. Trump Campaign Officials say that the events that americans are witnessing on the ground in kenosha, wisconsin, here in washington, and in other places is buttressing that message. So theyre really honing in on it. President trump last night describing protesters here in washington who were outside his speech as thugs, saying that we cannot let a group of nutjobs destroy the country. But if theres one thing that President Trump and the democrats agree on right now, its the stakes in this election. Take a listen. This november, each of you will vote in truly the most important election in the history of our country. I used to say it about 2016. This is now at a new level. Joe biden is the puppet of the radical Left Movement that seeks to obliterate and destroy everything that you hold dear. And snaeenator Kamala Harris the Vice President ial nominee is responding to the president s messaging in a fundraiser that she held last night. She says the president is deploying fear tactics and shes warning supporters that those tactics could actually work. But she says that if democrats hold firm with their truth, she hopes ultimately that message will prevail. And josh, speaking of biden and harris, do you have any sense of are we getting in guidance if they plan to leave the greater washington, d. C. And delaware area anytime soon . I know the president is traveling to texas and louisiana and New Hampshire. Hes out there on the campaign. What about the other guys . Reporter were starting to get a sense from the Biden Campaign that theyre beginning to have a little bit more travel, especially to some of these battleground states, where the president and the Vice President are really making their presence known on the ground. The Biden Campaign has tried to draw this contrast by showing that theyre the ones following the science and not putting people needlessly in harms way by doing this on the ground campaigning. For example, at this rally that the president had last night in New Hampshire, when it was announced on the loud speakers that everyone needed to put their masks on, there was booing taking place in this largely unsocial ll lly distanced campa there. What we hear from their aides, they understand that biden and harris need to be visual as well, so theyre trying to do that. Josh, thank you. This morning, National Guard members from three different states are in kenosha, wisconsin. This comes after days of protests in the city over the Police Shooting of jacob blake and a call for help from wisconsins governor. Nbcs Gabe Gutierrez is there. Reporter the Sheriffs Office says bond was posted in jacob blakes case and that hes no longer shackled to his hospital bed. Wisconsins top Law Enforcement officer responding late today. Do you believe that it was appropriate for him to be shackled to the bed, given that he was paralyzed from the waist down . I do not any that mr. Blake should have been in handcuffs, no. Reporter earlier, kenosha officials said the restraints were standard procedure. Hes being guarded because hes under arrest and it was for an outstanding warrant for thirddegree sexual assault. Reporter state authorities identified two more officers at the vascene of the shooting. Officers say officer vincent arains unsuccessfully deployed his taser and officer brittney meranek was also there. Wics attorney general says only officer Rusten Shesky fired his gun and that blake admitted to authorities he had a knife. He was interview after he had been shot seven times . There have been a number of interviews conducted in this case. Reporter Court Hearing was postponed in illinois for kyle rittenhouse, the white teenager now charged with the murder of two protesters earlier this week. Rittenhouses attorney tells nbc news, this was classic selfdefense and we are going to prove it. But rittenhouses case has outraged blakes family after he was seen in this video walking by police after the gunfire before being arrested hours later. They let him literally go home. So that tells you, a black man who is making no threat to the police, walking away from them, is shot seven times in the back. A white man kills two people and walks by the police and is not shot and not killed. The police chief says the officers did not know rittenhouse was a suspect. I believe everybody out there in Law Enforcement has been friendly to both sides. Reporter President Trump is blaming the summers violent protest across the country on poor leadership in what he calls democratrun cities. That is definitely someone who is illinformed of our community. Reporter John Antaramian is kenoshas mayor. How much of the increased tension is due to the militias that came here . I am one of those who think that the militias create part of the problem. Do not want them here. That is nbcs Gabe Gutierrez reporting from kenosha, wisconsin. Those ongoing protests only highlighting the tale of two countries during the rnc. You have the fires, the riots, a lone shooter there in kenosha, wisconsin, while republicans double down on law and order messaging, suggesting democrats are too lame. Your vote will decide whether we protect lawabiding americans or whether we give free rein to violent anarchists and agitators and criminals, who threaten our citizens. Democratrun cities across this country are being overrun by violent mobs. It is clear that a vote for biden and the democrats creates the risk that you will bring this lawlessness to your city, to your town, to your suburb. The hard truth is, you wont be safe in joe s america. Joining us now, nazita, an assistant professor in the department of Political Science at Michigan State university. Nazita, welcome in. You just heard some of the gops law and order messaging there. Lets do some Fact Checking here. How does the picture theyre painting stack up to reality . I mean, i think its pretty clear that the picture that the gop is painting is one that is quite biased. Its one that paints peaceful protests, a right that we have in this country, as one that is violent. Its a scare tactic being used. The word suburb is code for white. And i think that the gop is making a very distinct line about who is being affected by all of this. And is reshifting the lens from the tragedies and the devastation that, you know, black americans and people of color in this country face. And trying to rescript the narrative. For the most part, they didnt address a lot of what was taking place, or the core issues of what were taking place in kenosha, wisconsin, this week. Joe biden and Kamala Harris did. They responded to the unrest in kenosha. Heres a listen. I condemn violence in any form, whether its loot organize whatever it is. The problem we have right now is, were in Donald Trumps america. He views this as a political benefit to him. You know, hes rooting for more violence, not less. We must always defend peaceful protest, and peaceful protesters. We should not confusing them with those looting and committing acts of violence. We will not let these vigilantes and extremists derail the path to justice. You follow this stuff. You get a sense that the democratic tick is effectively countering trumps messaging . So i think that this has become largely a partisan issue. There was a moment, in may, in june, where, you know, you saw folks on both sides of the aisle, especially among republicans, among independents, who started to at least somewhat support the black lives matters movement. But between june and between august with the recent violent attack on jacob blakes life, we have a situation brown large subsets of republicans and swaths of independents are now against the black lives matters movements. So my hesitation about all of this is that, unfortunately, you know, a movement thats about highlighting, you know, oppression and the violence thats taken on the lives of people of color and plaqblack americans is completely being its being coopted by others who are trying to change the message there, turn it around. Lets go on that black lives matter. Youve spoken with protesters who are part of that movement. Youve spoken with demonstrators. First of all, what are you hearing in regards to what theyre going to do for the election . What impact do you foresee their movement having on the election . Yeah, i spend a lot of time at protests, especially with the youth. Ive, you know, been there from a personal reason, but also from an academic reason, as well. I ask people there, you know, what are you going to do in november . Why are you here . What are you going to do in november. And they say, im not going to show up, because bernie is not on the ticket. And i think that this highlights a bigger point, you know, that even though we had this democratic National Convention that is meant to unify a party, the dnc did not bring in the youth, you know . And i think they need to do a better job of giving folks who have legitimate concerns about the direction of this country. And their own interactions with institutions, including Law Enforcement, right, to be viewed, to be seen, to be heard, and to be included in the platform. Were going to leave it there. Nazita, thank you. Appreciate. It. An unprecedented nba walk off comes to an end after sparking change across multiple sports leagues. Nba players are reacting to the tragic passing of the black panther actor, Chadwick Boseman. L. A. Lakers star lebron james posting this picture of himself with the caption, rest in paradise, king. Another tweet, loss for words, one of my favorite actors. Praying for his family and loved ones. R. I. P. , king. And former nba player and sports commentator, kenny smith, posted a picture that he took of boseman next to this famous photo of the late kobe bryant. In the caption he wrote, when i asked you to pose and i shot this picture to recreate an iconic picture of kobe bryant, little did i know the significance it would have. I told you that you embodied the superhero in him. Chadwick boseman, you will be missed. Tell kobe we miss him, too. Ive seen a lot of pictures between him and kobe, because they did have a really significant relationship, too. Just captures this year so much. And speaking of kobe bryant, the nba playoffs resume this afternoon, just three days after players walked out in protest against the Police Shooting of jacob blake in kenosha, wisconsin, as part of an agreement with its players union, the nba has now agreed to convert some of its arenas into polling locations for the november election. As you can see right there, its not just basketball. We have baseball and plenty of other sports that were involved in the protests this week. Joining us right now ava wallace, a Sports Writer for the washington post. The nba did do the walk off, as i mentioned, and it did create that domino effect you saw, cross the sports world with many players of nearly every league refusing to play in support of black lives matter. What is the longterm impact, if any, of this united front . I think exactly what you said there, its the scale of what really we can call a movement now. Something that really shocked me wednesday night, a day where i felt like i was floored just every couple of hours with what athletes and leagues were doing is when these protests reached Something Like Major League Baseball and reached major tennis, which is not necessarily a sport thats generally very organized or very together, there arent even significantly organized leagues in tennis. Everyones an independent contractor. So i think when you see things trickle down to watching the nhl here and majority white sports, sports that arent necessarily organized or engaged in social justice the way the nba and the wnba has been for years, i think thats the last impact. You really cant, as a sports fan, you cant get away from this now. You say Lasting Impact. Do you think this will have some real change, given that this fight has been going for decades, if not hundreds of years . I do, just because of, you know, you referred to the deal that the nba reached. Theyre getting the ownership level involved. And earlier this month, there was a 300 million fund created in the nba, that money towards black empowerment and black community engagement. Now as you said, the three things that the nba players fought for was a social Justice Coalition created between players, koechecoaches and ownee people kind of with the money in the league and the real ability to make that change. Well also get tv ads focus on Civic Engagement and criminal justice reform. I think thats where you see the Lasting Impact at the ownership level, at the league level, nba commissioner adam silver backing and supporting all of this. Theyre the people that have billions of dollars behind them to create that change. And opening up all the arenas that are owned by nba teams as voting booths. Thats really key, key concession right there. Do you think that might get extended to other sports, including stadiums and arenas kind of converted recently just for the coronavirus pandemic, to help people get tested. I think you could see that in sports, especially since especially with in the nba, these arenas are kind of in the center of cities, and theyre places that people know how to get to and have good access. So i think youll see maybe sports leagues converted and arenas converted into use for more social justice platforms, as well. Ava, i know some people were surprised that the actual nba protests only lasted three days. Do you think it should have lasted longer . Or do you think that its important that they went back to finish the end of their season . I think it is important that they went back to finish the end of the season. Something that they talked about a lot with the creation of this bubble is you have this platform if you go out and play down in orlando, you can wear social justice messages on the back of your jersey and you have the eyes of the country on you. I think what they achieved in the protest is everyone is talking about it now. I dont think you can discount the fact Something Like this hasnt happened in major league sports, a type of walkout, certainly not to this scale. And now once you have people watching again, you have people thinking about that and were going to keep talking about it. Well, theyll return to play today with some heavy hearts, because of losing chad wwick boseman and with a lot on their mind because of social injustice. Ava wallace, thank you. By the way, there was this one reaction that i noted, i wanted to see about chad bosemans death, including from chris evans, of course, captain america, just saying, simply put, absolutely devastating. Beyond heartbreaking in the words of chris evans. Well be right back. N the words of chris evans welbel right back. We continue to follow the breaking news, the shocking breaking news. Actor Chadwick Boseman, who played black panther and other black icons, including Jackie Robinson, james brown, Thurgood Marshall before becoming a household name of the black panther has died of cancer. Boseman passed away late friday following a fouryear bout with colon cancer. He never talked about it publicly. It was such a surprise. He was first diagnosed in 2016 and filmed a number of memorable themes, and it is worth noting that he died on Jackie Robinson day, seven years after he played robinson in 42. Joining us, eric diggins. Thank you so much for being here. Thank you for having me. You first heard of the news when and your reaction . I guess i first heard of the news when most people did, when whoever patrols his twitter account posted this really emotional note to everyone along with a wonderful picture of chadwick, noting many of the things that you noted. That he filmed several movies while he was undergoing surgery and chemotherapy and that he thought that black panther was the highest honor in a career that included a lot of really powerful roles. What does it say about him that he continued to take on these really incredible and very physically demanding roles, battling cancer and doing it silently, while being an activist . I think it speaks to the strength and the core values that we always sensed through the roles that he played. I dont think it was a coincidence, for example, that when spike lee passed him in the five bloods, he was playing a character that was sort of the embodiment of all the values, the traditions and upright values that those men aspired to. And he was the conscious of the squad that he led in that film. And i think we came to see him as the embodiment of the conscience of black america in a lot of the roles that he played. To play Thurgood Marshall, to play Jackie Robinson, to play a flawed character like james brown and make it not be a caricature or something that was to be laughed at, to make him a real character that you can empathize with, that just spoke to his talent as an actor, his strength as a man, and his ability to channel these things, these hopes and dreams and values that embodied the best of black america, which i think made him an icon in a lot of peoples eyes. What was his strength as a man . He obviously tried to keep his private life very private. He was married and he kept this battle with cancer fairly secretive, obviously. We didnt know he was sick until we got the news. But throughout, ive been watching plenty of videos and you see him visiting Cancer Patients in the hospitals and talking about the letters that he got from young kids who had cancer. At the time, i thought, this is really a guy whos just absolutely emotional, but now you understand, also, that he could kind of empathize with those people. Yeah, well, you guys know, when you cover entertainment, you always hear rumors about what people are really like and what i always heard about Chadwick Boseman is that he was a great person, that he was a standup guy. And you know, Angela Bassett has talked about how when she visited howard, chadwick was her guide, and she was impressed with him back then. Phylicia rashad was his mentor when he was in school. These were people who could see his greatness and his talent early on. And he seemed to just continue that throughout his career. You see all of the memorials and rest in peace messages from his costars and people who knew him that are all over social media. And you get the sense, this was a wellloved brother. They knew there was something there. Including denzel washington, who helped pay for a year of his tuition in school. They knew that he had something. And he did. Eric, thank you. Thank you. This morning on the gulf coast, hundreds of thousands are still without power and as importantly, several are without water. The death toll is climbing. 15 so far, all in the aftermath of hurricane laura, one of the strongest to ever hit this area. Yeah, today, President Trump is set to visit louisiana and texas to survey all of this damage, including one of the hardesthit areas, lake charles, louisiana. Thats where we find nbcs Priscilla Thompson live for us there. Priscilla, whats the latest . Reporte there still so much work to be done on the ground here. I want you to take a look here. That was 150mileperhour winds that swept through this area, and weve seen so many trees like this one completely uprooted. And landing on houses like this one. You can see that entire garage is pretty much the roof destroyed. It also hit part of the main house and we spoke to the woman whos actually inside of here and this is a family home that has been passed on through generations. Its a place where the family gathers, and so thats very, very devastating. But Recovery Efforts are underway. Weve seen folks trying to cut those trees, to clear the roads. Tons of utility workers with those bucket trucks trying to get that electricity restored. But even so, there are around half a Million People without electricity, more than 200,000 without water. And officials have said that it will take some time. This recovery, not days, but possibly up to a week, if not longer. And we actually heard a little bit about that from the governor. Take a listen to what he said about the recovery here. There are 82 Water Systems that are down in louisiana right now. Thats a real problem, when you have electricity and Water Systems down. And by the way, a lot of the times, its the electricity being down thats that causes the water system problems. Thats causing us to have a rolling series of evacuations, that were having to do from Nursing Homes and from hospitals. And the governor, yesterday, did request a disaster declaration, mayor disaster declaration from President Trump, who did approve that. And as you mentioned, the president is expected to visit today. His chief of staff saying that he will evaluate the damage here and also meet with first responders. Lindsay, candace . Priscilla thomas joining us in lake charles, louisiana, thank you. Lets head internationally now, we have breaking news in germany this morning. The streets of berlin packed with protesters as thousands rally against coronavirus restrictions. Now, some of those protesters inspired by the Qanon Movement here in the u. S. Nbcs matt bradley is in berlin this morning and joining us with the latest on whats happening there. I dont understand the connection between the protests over restrictions and qanon. Explain. Reporter yeah, you know, its an interesting thing. They lay over quite neatly over each other. This is mostly an anticoronavirus restriction protest. Folks here, theyre angry about the fact that their lives have been so badly interrupted by the restrictions placed by the government, and theyre not seeing the real virus toll. Theyre not seeing a lot of sick people in germany. Ironically, kendis, in part because of those very restrictions that were imposed by the government, so there is this feeling as there is in the states and its spread across the world, that this virus is an invention by a cabal of global elites who are trying to use it to profit and control people. This is obviously a widely discredited Conspiracy Theory, but if youre susceptible to this logic that theres a cabal of global elites trying to suppress people, you might be susceptible to the qanon, that theyre networking with each other to suppress the people not just with coronavirus but everything else. We spoke with qanon supporters here, theyre german. Theyre not americans, theyre not democrats or republicans. They dont have a dog in the fight of u. S. Domestic politics, but they see qanon and coronavirus as very much comingled. Listen to what they had to say. Its the same problem. Its the same problem. We have the problem of the commoners and they are the same lies they tell us. Coronavirus is a big problem, and we must go. The situation between the germans and americans and russians, french people, yeah, this is the reason. We are for the truth and the peace. Reporter you know, we have heard a lot from people here. They are holding up signs supporting qanon. They are holding up donald trump signs and flags with his picture on it that are supporting trump. The qanon Conspiracy Theory is this notion that there is a secret operative within the u. S. Government. He knows whats going on, and that donald trump will, like some sort of messiah figure save the world from an International Ring of pedophiles, and once again, this is a completely discredited theory, but if you are researching the coronavirus and you believe and you fall into this sort of internet rabbit hole of different conspiracy theories, you might end up radicalizing yourself into believing this qanon Conspiracy Theory. We see that here. You could say that qanon as a Conspiracy Theory is spreading around the world like a pandemic. Kendis. Wow. Nbcs matt bradley live on the ground in berlin. You can see this protest is going for several blocks. Matt bradleys team will be on the move if it does. People think that 5g gave us covid19. That is part of the qanon theory. That is, as they would say in living color, some Conspiracy Theory. Plus, why one top democrat says joe biden should skip the debates. Says joe biden should skip the debates.
