Louisville as demonstrators demand justice for Breonna Taylor. Things got tense as two protest groups heavily armed showed up, three members from a black Militia Group were accidentally shot but expected to survive. Peaceful protests was high on the list of honors for john lewis today. Friends and family gather to honor and remember this civil rights icon and lifelong Public Service in his hometown of troy, alabama. He always wanted to improve the lives of others without any concern for himself. His deep faith in god made him extraordinary. He was fearless by trusting in god because he was chosen. Tomorrow the congressmans body will lie in state at the Alabama State capitol in montgomery. A number of Memorial Services will follow in washington and atlanta. That is just one reason the nations eyes are be on the nations capital. A Financial Life line is about to run out for more than 30 million unemployed americans because of the coronavirus pandemic. The senate is expected to release its plan on monday. Right now theres nothing set in stone to provide more aide. 42 states have seen an increase in past two weeks. Texas has been hit particularly hard by the pandemic, its also being hit hard right now by the First Atlantic hurricane of the year. Hurricane hanna made land fall over padre island in south texas few hours ago and a second land fall in kennedy county between Corpus Christi and the mexican border. We begin tonight with the pandemic. Right now the u. S. Has more than 4. 1 million confirmed cases. More than 147,000 americans have died. Yesterday the World Health Organization reported more than 284,000 cases of coronavirus in just 24 hours. That is a new high for a single day of global indications. Most of dications. Most of global cases. Most come from texas, florida, california, georgia, arizona. Joining us now the Campaign Director for United States Public Research group and our nbc news science contributor. We should mention dr. Fair is in new orleans this evening. New orleans had already stopped indoor bar service, you may have heard. As of today it also banned takeout Alcohol Service known as gocups because of a rise in coronavirus cases. Dr. Fair, i know this sounds minor but i want to start with that slice of life in new orleans. We will talk about the bigger issues of deficit, infections, testing. All that. Just in terms of daytoday life what does banning go cups mean for new orleans night life or lack of at this point. I have to tell you banning go cups is like one of the seven seals already broken. We know weve approached something very serious if were banning go cups, such a central part of our culture in new orleans. Why waste a perfectly good drink when you can take it on the street with you. That said, we do know alcohol lowers your inhibition, its one of the reasons we all like it so much, but in the case of coronavirus lowering those inhibitions leads to lack of social distancing, people mixing, getting together in groups larger than they should be and essentially spreading the virus. Its been demonstrated again and again since the on set of this pandemic. Yesterday the u. S. Supreme court rejected a church in nevada to challenge the number of congreg ants allowed during service what do you think of that . I think the only thing i would say about it is we know the more people we know in close spaces the higher the risk of spreading the virus. Doctor, the cdc released guidelines this week for schools to reopen this fall, what do you think schools should be doing at this point . Do the guidelines answer most of the outside questions you outstanding questions you have . Not at all. Questions i would have as a parent, making me feel comfortable enough to send my child to school, the cdc guidelines as of now do not do that. And the fact were cancelling Rnc Convention but still allow students to go to school in the fall. Just to give you an equation, every time we do an animal experiment, when were work on vaccines, that types of things, we go through whats called ethical review boards. Sending children to school with a pathogen present that we have no idea whats going to do to them, happen to them on a larger scale, if any will get sick enough to die, if well see more things like the kawaski syndrome, that experiment would never be approved by an ethical panel, thats for an animal. So sending children back to school, i get that it is key to the economy and to their lives and establishing normalcy but until we get the pandemic under control were not going to have any type of normalcy that we had precovid19. It seems push has rapidly come to shove as it relates to getting kids back to school and the economy cranking full steam again. Is there in your view no way to safely return kids to campus so their parents can get back to work . Is there some way to make this work is that you would be comfortable with . Well, i think it comes down to what the doctor said about getting cases down. We know were seeing uncontrolled spread in almost half the states across the country. We know were nowhere near where we need to be on testing and tracing capacity to squash future outbreaks before they explode. So i think what we do right now will have a huge impact not only whether or not we can reopen schools safely but how many lives we can save, not only in the shortterm but the long term, if we can actually reopen the country safely. It all comes down to what policy makers decide now, we urge them to take action to save lives. Matt, youve been pushing for americas Decision Makers to in your words, shut it down, start over, and do it right. Youve been calling for stricter guidelines to stopt spread of stop the spread of covid. I think everybody is ready for this to be over, even those who are 100 in favor of Hand Sanitizer and masks, some would give anything to have one gym over within 100 miles. If you are in charge of this pandemic what one big poly or plan would you put in place to stop cases from rising and get us back to normal faster. Right. I hear you, joshua, people have vented its difficult. We were in charge of the federal response couple things our government needs to do, number one, hit the reset button, slow the spread of the virus, slow businesses in much of the country, limit interstate travel to contain it, and mandate that masks are worn in public by everyone across the u. S. To limit transmission. Number two, they have to take the time that those kind of measures will buy us to rapidly ramp up testing, tracing and infrastructure in this country so we can contain outbreaks and to produce enough personal protective equipment to Keep Health Care workers safe, it a problem weve been struggling with since march. Thats not solved and its a travesty. Thanks both for joining us. Lets continue with coronavirus, we talked about Public Health issues now talking about politics our republican strategist and msnbc political analyst and president of color of change. And White House Reporter for the Washington Post and msnbc contributor and legal analyst. Good to have everyone with us. And let me start with you. Whats the latest from washington as you know it when it comes to more relief for these 30 million plus americans who are unemployed because of the pandemic . Well, joshua, we really saw the break down of the republican effort to come up with a bill toward the end of last week and it was very clear between what Senate Republicans wanted to do, and what the white house wanted to do. Its really up in the air. The clock is running out on the relief for unemployment relief for americans who have a real issue right now with trying to go back to work and the money is running out that they are being paid from congress. I think congress will find a way one way or another to come up with some kind of a stopgap measure but theres really a disconnect between what Senate Republicans wanted to do and what the white house wanted them to do. And that problem isnt going to go away and if we are actually going to be facing another five or six months of unemployment or partial employment for a lot of americans there probably is going to have to be yet another package or some other extension of employment relief for people and that will run right up against the election and then on into the fall and potentially into the winter with no real resolution on the politics of this. Speaking of fizz yours in fist yours in fist yours i fissures in terms of the white house Washington Post points out the president s advisor tried to get him to take a cautious approach. The polls are not favorable for him lately. Particularly in regards to cancelling jacksonville portion of the Republican Convention showing he has takesen the coronavirus pandemic more seriously. He has cancelled the jacksonville portion, the indoor part in North Carolina will happen. What message does that set. I think you have to look at the prism whatever is good for donald trump is what donald trump will do. Yes it does send a good message he cancelled the convention, its good hes now having talks, press conferences, and says with wear a mask, its good. But thats only because he saw the poll numbers and it was hurting him he wasnt doing those things. So we shouldnt conflate the fact that donald trump has had an epip fanny or now sees the light and seeking to help the public versus hes seeking to help himself and he knows he has to do that because his numbers are tanking. Were seeing swing state polls hes in the high 30s its very hard to crawl back from the 30s and take a state. We mentioned the Supreme Court about a nevada church. Whats your sense of the courts role during this pandemic . Particularly the fact that the majority opinion, now 54, didnt come with an explanation, it was just kind of no. Two disents but no written opinion. Right. I think that the courts, depending on who decides to file the lawsuit, can play a bigger role in this pandemic. Youll remember the Supreme Court also step in with respect to voting, forget which state it was but they were trying to decide whether or not they should have the polls open in the middle of the pandemic and the Supreme Court came in and decided that answer should be yes. So any time any state decides to file a lawsuit or any body decides to file a lawsuit to the Supreme Court it will be interesting to see how the Supreme Court comes down on it. Whats important for everyone to understand is is that were still in the middle of a pandemic and its unfortunate that so much of this has been politicized. No other country to date and we know that this pandemic is global is facing this from the prism of politics. And i think thats one of the reasons why you see the number of new cases surpassing 4 million and the number of deaths surpassing 140,000. Its because the virus has been politicize in this country. There have been a number of rulings related to absentee voting in texas, alabama and wisconsin over the last few months. Yes, thats right. So the court has played a very big role. We have to pause in a second but one last question. Were watching hurricane hanna hitting texas. Hurricane douglas is also approaching hawaii. This could get complicated, i think, for First Responders and hospitals dealing with both a pandemic and a hurricane at the same time. It feels like it could kind of highlight some of these issues with our Public Health planning and infrastructure that weve been kind of creeping towards dealing with, Hurricane Season could blast them into very bold relief very quickly. Its going to expose all of the ways in which we put Corporate Power and politics and so many other things before safety, integrity, and security, or the American People and in many ways over and over again we are watching the results of corporate and political enablers that continue to stand in the way of the right thing. Right. We know who donald trump is. The problem here is that time and time again we are seeing others who should be speaking out. Who should have pushed back. Who should have stood at the gap. Not do that. And as i result people will continue to be hurt and harmed. And i hope that the reckoning that comes in november with this election is not just about donald trump but is about exposing trumpism and exposing all of the ways in which we have put so many other things before the American People, and we have to get do the work of holding those in power accountable and the enablers accountable. I was listening to the briefing tonight, Texas Governor greg abbott held a briefing before hurricane made land fall. Officials said they were able too deal with the hurricane response in the texmexico border without resorting resources away from Coronavirus Response to comprise either. So far it looks like theyre holding on. Im praying we dont have a major hurricane that forces us to test our ability to walk and chew gum. Stick around more to discuss later in the hour. Just ahead Congress Remains at a stalemate over the next stimulus package. Meanwhile u. S. Could be in for a wave of evictions, thats next. What do you think . I dont see it. Only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. New tide power pods one up the can it one up spaghetti night . It sure can. Really . Can it one up breakfast in bed . Yeah, for sure. Thanks, boys. What about that . Uhh, yep it can . Yeah, even that i would very much like to see that. Me too. Introducing new tide power pods. Tonight families across the country face the threat of losing their homes, many of them had been paying their rent and their bills partly with federal aid that is about to expire. Today marked the end of a fourmonth federal moratorium that has protected millions of us from being evicted during this pandemic and now cities are bracing for nationwide surge in evictions. We speak to one mother in milwaukee wondering how to keep a roof over their childrens heads. Every parent want to give their kid a home thats safe place to be. I cant. It felt like i just couldnt do that at the time. I know they dont mean anything to my landlord but they mean something to me. So, like i say, just knowing that you cant provide your kids with the essential things, that rips me apart. Joining us now is democratic congressman of michigan, his district includes the flint area. Congressman, good evening. Thank you for having me on. What has gone wrong . Where has it gone wrong that we see an increasing number of people like this mother who are crying themselves, i presume, to sleep over the risk of losing their homes . Well, so far whats wrongs is that the u. S. Senate just does not seem to be able to conjure up any empathy for people like the young woman you just showed who stand to risk to lose everything that theyve worked for. You know, this unemployment benefit is a life line. It was the right thing to do when we passed it a few months ago, i dont understand how the senate or donald trump can somehow say now we no longer need it. People are still unemployed. Unemployment is not an ideological issue. Its not left or right. Its not democratic or republicans. It can happen to anyone. So the president needs to speak up and frankly if hes not willing to do this he needs to explain to every person, woman, man, camera and tv why these people should not be able to get these benefits. Hes got some explaining to do. Hes been dead silent about this. Hows your district doing, the Census Bureau says one in five renters, about 14 Million People havent paid rent or delayed their rent payment for the last month. Nine million renters have no confidence in ability to pay next month. 14 million are only kind of confident. How are things in flint, michigan looking how are folks doing . Well,s tough, i mean, weve already had our own problems. Flint is still not out of the water crisis entirely and now we have an economic and Health Crisis on top of it. So people are afraid. They stand to lose everything. I think its important to keep in mind, its really important for us to gep get these folks the support they need. Thats all i need. Thats all the democrats need. We passed the heroes act two months ago to extend these benefits. It was my legislation that was included in the heroes act to extend benefits until the rest of the year. Even if cant have empathy for those families ought to keep in mind the money going to those families is going right to the u. S. Economy, this very tenuous economy thats barely holding on, that the president seems to sort of want to take credit for, is being held up because these 25 million families can pay their bills, they can go to the grocery store, they can pay their landlord, they can take care of their mortgage payments, they can take care of their children 50e6k9ively. The money be that will be lost is lost to the u. S. Economy. Unemployment will actually go up if these benefits are not continued. And it will will be more people without the capacity to take care of themselves and this is how we go from a really serious recession into a depression. Let me play you a quick clip of Senate Majority leader, mitch mcconnell, heres what he said how things are tracking right now. We need to be very careful about what we do next. I said we ought to take another look at it in july, its july, were in the process of developing another proposal, in my view it ought to be very much frontloaded toward immediate help. That will be the beginning of the discussion with the democratic next week, hopefully we can agree on a package in next few weeks. So senator mcconnell saying it should be front loaded towards immediate help. What could break the log jam when democrats and republicans start it talking about this again, if both sides were not playing politics on this, what would a quick, meaningful solution look like right now. Lets be clear, both sides are not playing politics. The house of representatives we legislate. We passed our bill two months ago. So the thing that needs to change, even if leader mcconnell has a different idea about what he thinks we ought to be doing, pass a bill, put it on the floor, legislate, do the job youre elected to do, and if there are two different versions of the same concept, we can work those differences out, were not a verse to negotiations, were not a verse to compromise. Do you see any place theres Common Ground, sorry to cut you short, do you see any place where theres Common Ground right now if we dragged everyone in a room. What can everyone agree on tonight . I think extended unemployment. I think thats number one. This entire economy will fall apart if we kick 25 Million People to the street. That has to unify this country. We have to act. Congressman dan kilde of flint, mix michigan, i certainly hope something can happen lickety split. Know americans need it right this second. Appreciate your time. Thanks for having me on. Coming up, protesters in louisville take to the streets calling for justice for Breonna Taylor. How will those calls be answered . And when . Yes it is. Jim, could you uh kick the tires . Oh yes. Were following developing protests in seattle tonight that have reportedly turned violent at times. Youre looking at live pictures from seattle where demonstrators are taking to the streets in solid ariity with other demonstrators in portland. According to our affiliate king 5 in seattle theres a number of people arrested what Seattle Police refer to as a riot tonight in which few officers have been injured. Theyve been protesting for about seven weeks now since the death of george floyd, and against police brutality. Now those protests have escalated in the last few weeks, as armed federal agents have gone in theyve been targeting protesters at the direction of the president. Meanwhile in louisville, at a protest things got chaotic when a gun accidentally went off, three people were taken to a hospital after being hit. Police say their injuries were not lifethreatening and all were members of the same protest group, that came as a farright protests faced off against black lives matter protesters. Now youre looking at live pictures of protests in seattle. It is getting increasingly intense, at times violent between police and protesters. Now mercyfully things are camming down in downtown louisville at this hour, doesnt mean the calls for justice for Breonna Taylor are calming down thats the 26yearold woman shot dead by police in her home back in march. To date no one has been charged with her death, leaving many people to continue asking when justice will be served. Lets put that question back to our panel. Rashad, let me speak to you first, yesterday we talked to kentuckys governor about the Breonna Taylor case, heres part of what he said. Certainly the investigation and the evaluation of this case has gone on far too long. And i think even though involved in that, which im not as a governor, would agree to that. And i think one of the concerns is that there havent necessarily been explanations of delay, of process, of where things are. Rashad what is your sense of how this case is going, particularly in terms of how much the governor knows and or is able to influence the case . Well, when people say that the system is broken theyre wrong, because the system is operating exactly the way it was designed. The system has set up to shield and protect police to allow police to do this sort of control, to participate in this type of violence, to kill with impunity and to not actually have to face consequences and what were see something what we have seen in cities and municipalities across the country when black people have been harmed by Law Enforcement and we dont see justice served. Whats happening now, the difference, people are taking to the streets and pushing back, not giving up, were pushing back and making sure to continue to expose the injustices and we will hold people accountable, whether at election day or before. And so i do think that what we are also seeing is the need for deeper Structural Reforms in terms of how police are shielded and allowed to continue this type of violence. As were continuing to look at live pictures from seattle just a little bit more context what youre looking from from the Seattle Police Department Twitter feed according to police one officer hospitalized with leg injury caused by explosive two other officers were treated and returned to duty. The crowd was throwing rocks, bottles, and fireworks and other cloviss at officers 16 people have been arrested for assault on officers. Well keep an eye on the protests in seattle. Let me ask about kentucky and whats going on in louisville. I asked about appointing a special prosecutor, something the attorney general will have to do. Heres what the he said. I think a special prosecutor could make sense here, not sure where the attorney general is on thee value of it but if those who think a special prosecutor will provide a more balanced approach that could be a direction the ag could take. I think a little bit of explanation by our attorney general of the process and steps, and why its taking so long would be helpful for people out there. Now today the attorney general Daniel Cameron tweeted, quote, those who are gathering in louisville today to protest we understand the desire for truth and ask that to be the focus of demonstrations not violence we continue to work diligently in pursuit of the truth by conductsing an independent investigation into the death of miss Breonna Taylor. Clearly not enough for protesters. No, its not. I think when the governor says he doesnt know the extent of the investigation i find that to be unacceptable. This is a very highprofile case, a case where a variety of facts are known. And it doesnt make any sense that even the governor is being kept in the dark, at least with respect to the status of the investigation. Justice delayed is justice denied. When justice is swift or at least when there is the appearance theyre trying to make justice swift what it does it breeds credibility and allows people to trust the system. I know you asked about a special prosecutor. I think thats a great idea, particular ly in these kind of cases because when you appoint a special prosecutor in these Police Killings of citizens what it does, you have someone removed from the relationship with police and prosecutors which we all know often times they are in bed together and by appointing a special prosecutor you have someone who can come in and be independent and the people can trust the process. It doesnt make any sense whatsoever that theres been so much delay with this case. Particularly since we know that they entered and without wearing body cameras, we know that when they filled out the incident report they put down there were no injuries and Breonna Taylor is dead, last i checked, thats an injury. So theres a lot of things we do know so doesnt make any sense why we cant at least get a status on this case. Rashad weve seen a number of proathletes and teams come out to speak of equal rights, the wnba with home jerseys guys Breonna Taylors name on the back and tampa bay tweeted about Breonna Taylor yesterday and lebron james called for an arrest. Whats your sense of an impact that pro sports may have on all this . Particularly as more i mean, Even Major League baseball on opening day players were taking a knee for the black lives matter movement. The kind of thing that when i was in San Francisco watching Colin Kaepernick do his thing would have cost a guy his job. Yeah, i mean, more and more athletes actually are reaching out it us at color of change and coaches and the leagues, looking to not just think about saying black lives matter but moving beyond the statement. I think that thats incredibly important and powerful. These are local leaders in their communities and as we think about sort of the reasons why were not achieving justice we can see the barriers that are standing in the way, whether its the Fraternal Order Police and Police Unions which continue to not come to the table with any type of sort of real ideas about changes. As we see the movements for both reform and for defunding, the movements for divesting from this type of policing and investing in communities in new ways, having cultural leaders, having those that sort of represent and have powerful places of society speaking out and pushing back. It also shows the power of culture change that just a couple years ago, right, the idea of athletes kneeling was completely sort of out of step. Now were watching the leagues accept it. That means we have to move to policy and structural change. Everyone stay with us, we have a lot more to discuss, were of course going to keep an eye on those protests in seattle. Coming up this week, joe biden gave joy reid a hint on who he is thinking about for his runging mate. Many say it should be a black woman. Who will he choose . Thats just ahead. Stay close. Stay close burke at farmers, we know a thing or two because weve seen a thing or two. Like how nice it is to save on your auto policy. But its even nicer knowing that if this happens. New fixodent ultra dual power provides you with an unbeatable hold and strong seal against food infiltrations. Fixodent. And forget it. It is washingtons favorite parlor game, the veep stakes, theres no lack of theories as who joe bidens running mate will be, no official name though presumably were getting close, biden saying his top choices include four black women. Heres what he said on new program the reid out. Are you committed to naming a blackwoman as your Vice President ial running mate. Im not committed to others than the ones ive made, among them, there are four black women. That decision is under way right now. By the way, black women support med my entire career, so theyre the ones as the saying goes have brought me to the dance. I have been loyal and theyve been loyal to me so its important that my administration, i promise you, will look like america. That list of possibles is still long, at least we think it is. Remember no one knows who is on the list but biden and his inner circle. But recent weeks a new name emerged, california congresswoman karen bass, this article calling her the sleepy choice and antiKamela Harris and in response the congresswoman said she expressed her support as potential vp pick. Id likes to go around the horn with the panel real fast, and look at the possible couldbe list. Maybe could be possible sort of names. I want to know where each of you would put your money. Whipping around the panel, susan who would you put your money on . Probably Kamela Harris but susan rice right behind her. For me probably harris. Anne . As a reporter i cant completely put my money anywhere but certainly susan vices long tie to former Vice President biden are clear. She would check a whole lot of boxes for them. She won them the comfort factor. She also said i know how to make america work and make decisions for the American People. I put my money on kamela hargs. Not only loyal to joe biden but to the entire democratic party, shes run for statewide office and also president. I think shes a formidable pick and weve seen her be excellent in the senate in questioning some of the most powerful men and women in congress and shes not scared. Thats what we need in that vp seat. Yeah, having watched her in those committees i dont want to come up in in Senate Judiciary committee to answer harriss question. I wish we could get two of her one for vp one in the senate. Thats to my question in terms of what is the best place for black women on this list. For example it is one thing to say Kamala Harris is a good picks for Vice President , a whole other thing to say shed be a good pick for attorney general. Right. District attorney in San Francisco. Californias attorney general, on the Senate Judiciary committee. Same with another career long enforcement, one of the house impeachment managers. When you look at vp, you know they could turn out to be honorary ribbon cutter but secretary of state, ambassador to the u. N. , secretary of state of human health and services you know what that blacks woman would be doing. Yes but this is the vp choice which is really first do no harm. A vp is not going to change the whole race for president but it certainly will be the leading contender for four years from now for president. But its very important to keep in mind who joe biden is comfortable with and the relationship he had with barack obama and a partnership. And so i think theres a lot of places for a lot of people we mentioned to go whether Kamala Harris as attorney general but thats why susan rice is unique, she can take on the Foreign Policy like nobody elses name has come up. She could be a big relief to joe biden in that area. Thank you to all of you, good to see you, and good to see new person. One day the rest of us will be safe to be in the same room again. No uh uh, no way come on, no no nnnnono only discover has no annual fee on any card. John lewis told us that sometimes you have to get in trouble who en fighting injustices. He called it good trouble. Its good because it plays on our innate capacity for empathy. Included the reverend james lawson. The most creative power, in the universe, is is what we, human beings, have in loving one another, in creating our families with love and truth, and tenderness for our children and young people. And gandhi happened to say, as jesus in the 1st century said, that love is powerful. Beyond our imagination. Nonviolence is about holding the moral high ground. We generally, do not like to see people suffer, especially unjustly. Contrast that with the protests in portland. Demonstrators and police, including federal officers, sent by president trump, have clashed with growing intensity. Most of these protests are nonviolent, but they are also confrontational. John lewis and his contemporaries were calm in their protests. Knowing that they would be attacked and determined to take it, however it came. Portland represents a departure from john lewiss philosophy, in some ways. But history shows us that does not make it wrong, nor does it make it less likely to succeed. Its been 50 years since the first Gay Liberation day march honoring the uprising at the stonewall inn. That protest was definitely not nonviolent. It ran counter to what john lewis taught, and stonewall worked. They dished out what they were sick of taking, and it made the community feel powerful, like never before. Today, in louisville, some protestors brought assaultstyle weapons downtown. That had people worried about things getting very violent, very fast. But that tactic is not unheard of, either. The black panthers did it on the steps of the california state capitol, back in 1967. They were protesting a bill meant to stop them from patrolling their communities, armed. Californias governor, ronald reagan, promptly signed that ban. The panthers patrols aimed to Intercept Police who were arresting black people, and inform the detainees of their constitutional rights. Confrontation has, generally, been less popular than nonviolence. But is it wrong . The people of stonewall would not say so. The panthers would not say so. Our Founding Fathers would not say so.
