Remarks the president made with reporters at the white house on the lawn there friday. Topics ranging from Inspector General report, detaining of Child Migrants and an interview he gave about kim jongun. James comey was unfair to the people of this country. The democrats forced that law upon our nation. I hate it. What did you mean just now . You dont understand, sorry. Jeff, with a good saturday morning to you. Can you separate the fact from the fiction here . Good morning, alex. The president came out swinging yesterday. The unexpected chaotic back and forth with reporters here on the white house north lawn yesterday. As you mentioned, the president unleashed a series of claims and accusations about a broad range of topics, many of which are false or misleading. President trump talking to reporters in a freewheeling, impromptu q a friday dishing out several eyebrowraising comments. Including this about the Inspector Generals report saying it exonerates him in the russia investigation. There was no obstruction. There was no collusion. If you read the report, youll see that. Reporter it doesnt focus on the russia investigation at all. Instead, it focuses on the Hillary Clinton email investigation. Some people say he lied. Some people say he didnt lie. I mean, really it turned out maybe he didnt lie. Reporter but trump himself tweeted this back in december. I had to fire germ flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the fbi. And on immigration, President TrumpHolding Democrats responsible for splitting up families illegally crossing the southern border. I hate it. I hate the children being taken away. The democrats have to changed their law. Thats their law. Reporter but it is not a democratic law. The zero tolerance policy was crafted by trumps own administration. The white house calling it a tough deterpbtd against illegal immigration. And days after meeting with north Korean Leader kim jongun, mr. Trump continues to tap his accomplishments. I have had so many people begging me, parents and fathers, mothers, daughters, sons, wherever i went, could you please get the remains of my boy back . Reporter the korean war took place from 1950 to 1953. Doing the math, this means a mother or father asking mr. Trump to return the remains of a deceased son would have to be well over 100 years old. And the president tried to create distance between himself and Paul Manafort, his former campaign chairman, who is now in jail pending trial. Mr. Trump said manafort worked for him for just a short period of time, as the president put it. I think he said just 49 days. When in fact, manafort led the campaign from mid march to late august, 2016. 144 days in all, alex. Not just that, the Trump Campaign hired manafort during what was a crucial period. He was there to secure enough delegates, a time of which the president thought he might lose the gop nomination. Alex . All right. Thank you so much for the fact checking. Appreciate that, jeff. Lets bring in host sirius xm, joe watkins and michael steele, former adviser to jeb bush. With a good saturday morning to all three of you. Do you think the president is being intentionally misleading or do you think he just doesnt have his facts straight or he is speaking the way he wishes things were . I think its a mix of all three. I think the president has long he embraced this idea of what he calls truthful hyperbole all to create the impression that he is doing better, he is more successful, he is winning in a way that isnt always supported by reality. And so your take on this, danielle . Why does this president speak like this . Because he is a liar. Its plain and simple. Look, he created this policy of separating children from their families because he wanted to send a message, him and Jeff Sessions want to accepted a message to immigrant families that we dont care, america is heartless. Regardless if youre fleeing violence, criminal activity, horrible things that are going on, that once you arrive in america, we are going to make your lives worse. Thats exactly what theyre doing. This is not a democratic policy. We need to point where this belongs and make them account bible for this. Joe, im curious. You have worked inside the white house. What kind of effect does this have on folks who are in the white house. They hear the president speaking. He does this even when something is scripted for him. And they are listening and they see things that are not factually correct. Does it send people into a tailspin. Oh, god, now we have to respin this, correct this, or do they leave it alone since its the president . I think the most part people working for the president understand his style. It is a free wheeling kind of style. He may see something one day and something very different the next day. They understand that about him. Its got to be hard for staffers. When i worked in the white house, the president really trusted what the staffers had to say. He really trusted us. And staffers did a lot of work to prepare the president s remarks. So in this case you have a president who is willing to talk off the cuff to the press and then it is left to the staff to backtrack and cover whatever he said that may be factually incorrect. A staff member was handed the president or someone facts and figures and they listen to him go and talk and they go, there goes that. Just throw that sheet of paper out. Michael, one of the claims that the president made is the ig report shows no collusion, no obstruction. But the report did not make any conclusions about the russia investigation. You heard jeff reporting that as well. Why would he say that it does . Because he is trying to cast doubt on the Mueller Investigation. He is trying to look for any shred of evidence or anything that he can use to discredit that investigation. Look, there is no question based on this ig report that people of the fbi were severely biased against President Trump. Theres no question based on this ig report that james comey made some serious errors of judgment. But every serious error of judgment seems to have hurt secretary clintons chances of becoming president , not President Trumps. While there is evidence of bias, there is no evidence that anyone in the fbi or the deep state or anything like that was of trying to derail the trump candidacy. If they had done so they probably would have been successful. Before the ig report came out, danielle, special counsel Robert Muellers image hit an alltime low. More view him unfavorably to favorable, 36 to 32 . Are republicans losing the messaging battle and does this ig report make it even harder to try to make a wholesale style defense of the Mueller Investigation . I mean, heres the thing. Democrats constantly lose the messaging battle. The truth gets in the way of telling a really good story, which is what this administration is incredibly good at. They dont have to tell the truth. We have to dig through the lies they continue to spread and then come out with a threepoint report or three pages or whatever it is that we have to do and try and dig out of their lie and tell the American People the truth. The reality is this administration lies. We need to say that he just acts out of character or speaks off the cuff. Those are euphemisms. No, he is a liar. Muellers numbers are dropping. Sure, they are. Ive wonder who we are polling when we ask people who believe what mueller is doing. He has indicted 14 people that have been associated with this administration. That is a big deal. That is not him just throwing, you know, things at the wall and hoping that something sticks. It is sticking. The law is on our side. And i hope the messaging catches up with what we know, which is this administration has been involved in collusion and they are continue to go gaslight the American People. Joe, the position that this puts republicans in. Given that the complaints of the ig report are not true, we have discussions, we look at things, we fact check, and many facets of the media do put things in the proper context and truthful light. What does this do for republicans . It makes it very difficult for republicans. Certainly to claim the high ground in all of this. And you see time and again the leaders in both the house and the Senate Backing away or distancing themselves on things that the president has said. It makes it difficult for the republicans to claim the high ground. Even attorney general sessions quoting the battle about this terrible immigration policy. A terrible thing to quote the bible to support bad policy. It has been done for years. Slave owners did it back in the 1800s to support slavery. It makes it difficult for the republicans to claim the high ground, saying this is a party that is honest and truthful. Its tough for these members of the house and the senate to support the president when he speaks off the cuff and makes statements that are erroneous. We remind our viewers that you are a minister. And the head of the United Methodist church, to whom Jeff Sessions belongs, condemned that and said there is no basis to justify what the president and everybody in the ags office is doing. Danielle, do you think the whole matter will force democrats to somewhat cave on this issue of the wall among other immigration changes that the president wants . I hope that it doesnt. Look, ive been in countries where ive seen the wall. Ive been to israel and palestine. And thats not what we want in america. It is not who we are. Its not who we should be, rather, i should say. The reality is there is a lot that needs to be done to fix our immigration policy. But this separating parents from their children, separating a mother from their infant while theyre breast feeding, this is not america. No, i dont think that the democrats should cave on the wall. As a matter of fact, i think all democrats should be down at all of these detention prisons, all of these child prisons, and be picketing out front, Holding Press Conferences out front until it changes. The pictures that came out, the video images of these children that are only receiving two hours a day outside, theyre not in solitary confinement. This isnt rikers island. Theyre children. Until we have the 53 of white women, right, the 53 of white women that decided to vote for trump in 2016, until we have white mothers realize that the treatment of brown and black children is just as important as the treatment of white children, nothing is going to change. Until we have people realize in america that the treatment of children, of families that are violence and devastation, that are coming here. Imagine what would make you have to leave your home, carry your child on your back, and cross the border into unknown territory. Imagine what would force you to do that. They deserve better, and we should be better than what this administration is giving to the American People. That was a hard description to listen to as a mother. Ive 100 agree with you. Ford did it. Regan did it. Carter did it. Clinton did it. And bush did it. In political investigations. Youre saying after the probe is over, it may be cleaned up with any pardons. If people were unfairly prosecuted. Rudy guiliani on the pardoning power of the president. Now, this comes as former Trump Campaign manafort has been taken into custody after pleading not justice i did tampering with ing witnesses. Joining me is liam brennan. These charges are not directly linked to the investigation into russias meddling in the election. How will these play into Robert Muellers problem . You know, alex, at this time go to see you again. Its unclear. What this will do is severely restrict him and his defense team and likely keep that trial on a very strict timetable. Being detained before trial is not something a judge wants to do, or wants to do very easily. One of the things they have to factor is how long will they be detained without a final judgment. I think judge jackson will keep this on a strict timetable because she has had to take this serious step and with a lot of basis of doing so before trial. He still has another trial to go through in Northern Virginia this summer before he gets to the trial in d. C. How this all plays out is still an open question. Okay. Lets get to the president s attorney Rudy Guiliani who continued his assault on the russia investigation. He was talking with the New York Daily News when the whole thing is over, things might get cleaned up with some president ial pardons. He said that to chris cuomo. Giuliani is walking back comments saying he advised the president no pardons. Could this be seen as another form of tampering . That is a really good question, alex. If i were a prosecutor on the case, i would worry this is some sort of signal that you should stay on the team and hold out because a pardon is going to come. One of the other things giuliani said this weekend is he told the president he has advised them not to do any pardons during the course of the investigation. As advice from the attorney, that is a very smart move. That could more clearly be shown to be obstructing the investigation because the investigation is ongoing. And so waiting until its all over on leaves that question there is nothing to obstruct at that point. But saying it publicly does put the whole world on notice, including the potential defendants, the subjects of the investigation, the targets of the investigation that it is on his mind. Mr. Giuliani was of very careful to say, you know, its only if someone was unfairly prosecuted. But that is, in mr. Trumps mind, a very subjective matter. So i think without anything more, youre not going to be able to prove obstruction on this. But it is something that is concerning. And it will be concerning i think to the prosecutors. Look, giuliani is the president s personal lawyer. He said an interview between trump and mueller is off the table. But can the special counsel thoroughly complete any investigation without the interview with the president . That any anybody who would be thoroughly investigate the case. Without interviewing him. Thats often done when somebody does become a defendant. Most defendants who end up going to trial havent sat for interviews in these complex investigations, if mr. Trump ever moved from a subject in a target arena, it wouldnt be uncommon for him not to have been interviewed. But a case theoretical in this case, could proceed and there could be a sort of final judgment, guilty or not guilty, on the facts of the case. Without interviewing that individual. However for the public record, this investigation serves multiple purposes. Its not just, it is partially a criminal investigation. Looking into violations of criminal law. And fascially its a counterintelligence investigation. And those dont always result in trials. They dont always result in these sort of public arena events. But they are very important for gaining information. For a National Security apparatus, for congress, for the executive branch and for the public to know whats going on in the Foreign Affairs arena in that instance, gathering as much information as possible, thats important for both cases. But in any investigation, you would want to interview as many people as possible. And so it would make a much fuller investigation, but in speaking just in criminal terms and doing criminal trials it wouldnt be necessary to bring the conclusion of that case. Okay. Liam brennan, thank you so much. See you again soon. Truth and consequences, what congressman mark sanford has to say about the president , what society is willing to accept from President Trump. Over. Under. Hey whoa, pop, pop. Your shoes untied. Ensure hes well taken care of, even as you build your own plans for retirement. See how lincoln can help protect your savings from the impact of longterm care expenses at lincolnfinancial. Com. Theres no seeming consequence to the president and lies. And if we accept that as a society, either its going to have incredibly harmful consequences in the way that we operate Going Forward based on the construct of the founding fathers. Republican congressman mark sanford of South Carolina in a clip from his upcoming interview on nbcs meet the press tomorrow. Sanford, who has been openly crital of the president was defeated in tuesdays primary election. Our panel is back with me, danielle mills and joe watkins and michael steele. Are there no seeming consequence force the president and his lies . This are and there will be. Mr. Sanford brought a lot of baggage to this race that was of his own making. He almost lost his primary challenge last time. He lost with a ton of money still on hand. He basically didnt take his opponent seriously enough and lost a primary election that was not a total surprise at all. But i think to your larger question, the point of the Mueller Investigation, the point of all of the discussion were having about the president s inability to correctly clearly and accurately answer questions, there will in the end be consequences. Whats your take, danielle, to the extent to which the president may have helped to bring about Mark Sanfords downfall with that tweet that he put out at the 11th h on election day tuesday . I mean nothing comes as any surprise, coming from donald trump. If he does not like you, hes going to take you down. If its between him and you, hes always going to choose himself. Thats how this administration operates, much like the mob. And so its, you know, it doesnt, its never surprises me anything that comes out of his mouth. But the reality is that he is a liar. Until we actually start using that word and saying, it not you know, hes not off the cuff. Its not cute, its not funny. Hes not a cowboy, hes a liar and its jeopardizing our democracy. Joe, lets take a listen to the clip on why so few republicans on the hill are willing to call out the president. Here it is. Why is it just you and jeff flake and bob corker . Where is speaker ryan . The head he have legislative branch . What you do is an elected official. An oldtime senator told me the name of the game is stay out of the game. The fact that mark sanford lost what does it mean for the Republican Party . Its a sign to other members that if you dont side with me i can tweet and lose you your seat. I think that youre elected to serve the people. There to do public service, to serve the public. I think in the best interests of americans, i hope that republicans will always seek to serve the public and not serve their own best selfinterest.
