We go to a former marine who quit the nra. Its a railway liidiculous nt we dont have a gun problem in the United States. Everybody screams about Second Amendment rights, on and on and on. Im willing to give up my Second Amendment right if it means 200 people dont die from a nut shooting out of of a window. I want to start with President Trump wrapping up his trip abroad, under fire for not accepting the russian meddling, now clarifying his remarks today. As to whether i believe it or not, im with our agencies, especially as currently constituted with their leadership. I believe in our intel agencies, our intelligence agencies. Ive worked with them very strongly. All right, joining me now, msnbc legal analyst Nick Ackerman and daniel hoffman, a retired cia officer and Vice President of spg and josh leaderman, National Security and Foreign Policy reporter for the associated press. Welcome to you all. Daniel, im going to start with you. Is trump being played here . Because you talk in an oped that i read of yours about discoverable influence operation, referring to the picture, of course, of flynn and putin that got out, was that supposed to be seen. The meeting between manafort and a russian lawyer, was that supposed to be known about. Is this a discoverable influence operation . Is the Trump Administration being played by putin . I think listen, russia is mounting all sorts of espionage against us. Some of the classic sort where theyre trying to recruit human penetrations of our government and also theyre running influence operations, which are clandestine, those of us very hard to discover. Frankly if youre discovering them in the media, i think they were meant to be discovered. An i think thats what we saw with rt where they invited general flynn, purposely so, to drive up rts credibility in advance of using rt to weaponize propaganda and disinformation in the leadup and during our election. Then after that was exposed, as the russians would be, then they would soil general flynns reputation in the process. So listen, russia considers us the main enemy. Vladimir putins soviet predecessors thought that of us and i dont see much thats changed since then. Theyre trying to gain every advantage they can against us. Really weve seen the last two decades a resurgent russia not only in our backyard but in latin america, the middle east, asia and south asia as well. I want to listen to marc short and then well talk. If we can partner with russia to provide peace in the god for saken area of syria right now, those are positive developments. This investigation has gone on without one bit of evidence showing one ballot was impacted. Its time for us to partner with people to help protect our international interests. So how is it, josh, that we should be partnering with russia if in fact we are being played by them . If the Trump Administration is falling for everything, hook, line and sinker . How is it that the u. S. Should be trusting russia and partnering with them with regard to north korea and partnering with them with regards to syria Going Forward . Well, youre right that theres a Huge Trust Deficit and most in the National Security establishment would tell us we shouldnt trust russia. Most would also tell you both in the Trump Administration and the administrations that preceded it that like it or not, we sort of have to deal with russia one way or another because they do have so much influence in some of the key areas, especially syria and other parts of the middle east. Its not so much a matter of trusting them and taking them at their word, but finding some way that we can figure out where our interests align and where we can hold each other to some type of productive path forward. When you hear the president essentially saying hes taking president putin at his word, at face value when he says he didnt do what the u. S. Intelligence agencies said he did, thats where you start to get concerns and the Chilling Effect for our intelligence operatives. I want to play also some sound from john brennan, everybody. Lets take a listen to that. I think mr. Putin is very clever in terms of playing to mr. Trumps interest in being flattered. Also i think mr. Trump is, for whatever reason, either intimidated by mr. Putin, afraid of what he could do or what might come out as a result of these investigations, so its very worrisome and i think it sends a worrisome, very disturbing signal to our allies and partners who are concerned about russian interference in their democrat processes as well. So, nick, how does we also remember trump call brennan a political hack. This has got to undermine intelligence agencies here in the United States. Theres no question it undermines the intelligence agency. He also called James Clapper, the former director of National Intelligence and jim comey, of course. And jim comey. Hes also attacked his own attorney general, his own secretary of state. But yet the one person he has not attacked is Vladimir Putin, whose word he takes in a second. Youve got to ask why. One, is it because the north koreans are right, that the guy is a lunatic . Two, is he in business with putin . Or three, did the Keith Schiller testimony the other day revealing that in fact trump had been offered five women back in 2003 in russia, do they have him blackmailed. All of these are valid questions at this point for investigators. Daniel, whats the end game here for putin and what hes managed to carry out in all of this . Is this about undermining u. S. Democracy or is it about putins own election in 2018 . I think those two things are interconnected. First of all, i think this whole debate, this public debate and the acrimony between officials no longer serving in the government and the president , it certainly serves the kremlins interests as well as other enemies. Im sure in the kremlin theyre very much enjoying all of this public debate and acrimony between the two sides. But for sure Vladimir Putin wants to degrade our democratic process. I think thats why he focused on our social networking and media sites which really in my view at least, the critical Backbone Infrastructure of our democratic process. If you degrade our trust in those, then theyre certainly going to be less effective not just in the United States but also in russia, where facebook has played a role in enabling those leaderless protests we saw years ago against putin, i think his sights are set on the march 2018 elections. The more we see Vladimir Putin being aggressive worldwide against us, i think it does reflect a certain element of weakness on his part, his concern that he is potentially at risk in this next election for some protests. I think thats why hes mounted those aggressive operations against us. So you think it shows weakness on his part as well to sort of be so involved in u. S. Politics. Nick, last question to you here, do you think that the u. S. Has an effective counterstrategy to russia with trump as president . I think the effective counterstrategy is to let the Mueller Investigation go forward, determine what all of the facts are regarding the russian involvement in our election. Did the Trump Campaign collude . Did they use facebook along with the Trump Campaign and the russians to influence our election . I think these are the questions that have to be answered. And the only way were going to find this out is to let the Mueller Investigation take its course. All right, Nick Ackerman, josh, thank you. Coming up, roy moore is digging in his heels even though many republicans are pulling their support. In reality, is the gop hoping he wins or loses . Thats next. Mike, look, its all lies. Im not that guy. Perhaps, roy, perhaps. But its hard to convince young people that youre not into young girls when youre just like woody from toy story. Before i had the shooting, burning, pinsandneedles of diabetic nerve pain these feet. Liked to style my dog as a kid. Loved motherhood, rain or shine. And were pumped to open my own salon. But i couldnt bear my diabetic nerve pain any longer. So i talked to my doctor and she prescribed lyrica. Nerve damage from diabetes causes diabetic nerve pain. Lyrica is fda approved to treat this pain from moderate to even severe diabetic nerve pain. Lyrica may cause serious allergic reactions, suicidal thoughts or actions. Tell your doctor right away if you have these, new or worse depression, unusual changes in mood or behavior, swelling, trouble breathing, rash, hives, blisters, muscle pain with fever, tired feeling or blurry vision. Common side effects dizziness, sleepiness, weight gain, swelling of hands, legs, and feet. Dont drink alcohol while taking lyrica. Dont drive or use machinery until you know how lyrica affects you. Those who have had a drug or alcohol problem may be more likely to misuse lyrica. Now i have less diabetic nerve pain. And i love grooming the next generation. Ask your doctor about lyrica. I dont love guilty until proven innocent. Id rather think innocent until proven guilty. If enough people come forward, i think he should step down and action should be taken. In spite of the allegations because of where the allegations have come from, the good ole boys and girls in alabama will probably still vote for him. I dont think he should be allowed to because along with like louis ck, he got accused of Sexual Assault and theyre cancelling all of his shows and i think netflix is pulling stuff from him and all that stuff. If they do that to a comedian, they should definitely do that to a politician. A lot of people coming out and talking and concerned about the waterfall of allegations coming out. Yet another allegation of Sexual Misconduct. This time Alabama Senate candidate roy moore remaining defiant, denying allegations that he initiated a sexual encounter with a 14yearold girl back in 1979 n his first public appearance since the Washington Post story broke, moore called into question his accusers story. Grown women would wait 40 years to come before right before an election to bring charges is absolutely unbelievable. Why now . The democrats and the republican establishment know the importance of this election. Hearing someone yelling in the crowd in support, so try this on for size, roy moore. How about there hasnt been a place for women to come out before but despite several lawmakers for moore to step aside, several supporters say they are standing by him. Joining me today, Evan Siegfried and eliza collins. Evan, im going to start with you. Mitch mcconnell as reported by axios saying hes a very pragmatic guy but a very principled guy and he is willing to lose the seat to prevent someone whos guilty of these things from taking it. Your reaction to that. Mitch mcconnell willing to lose a seat there for roy moore. I think Mitch Mcconnell should go a step further and say he wouldnt seat him if he won. To be honest with you, theres a lot of talk about innocent until proven guilty. But this isnt a court of law, this is a political opinion. And what we stand for as a party. We used to be as the Republican Party the party of moral values but we havent been. In 1998, Bob Livingston was set to become speaker of the house and was accused of having affairs and he was drummed out of congress by us republicans because we stood on morals an principles. Now were not standing on them and many people are standing by roy moore. Were seeing people are defending it and saying, oh, my goodness, it is a bad allegation, but it would be worse if a democrat got that seat. That type of mindset is a cancer on the United States. And the republicans who are standing by roy moore really need to do some self reflection. Eliza, what needs to happen for the gop to save face here with roy moore . You have to move forward and just continue with their strategy and agenda. Youre seeing senators already distancing themselves from roy moore. Moore is not going to step down so theyre just going to have to kind of do what Mitch Mcconnell said and say were willing to lose this seat and willing to go ahead. Also, if a democrat does win the seat, the state is very red, so it will be a tough reelection so they can hope kind of what youre seeing now with some of the democrats in states trump won hoping that they can come and vote with republicans on Something Like tax reform because theyre trying to win back their states that are already conservative. Republicans can kind of hope that if there is a democrat in their seat, they can get him to come along. Evan, does trump have to step in and encourage moore to step aside . That would certainly help. And it could help his brand as well. It absolutely would, because republicans have been accused of having a war on women. Roy moore and many other republicans who are defending him are saying why are they just coming forward now . The same could be said of Harvey Weinsteins accusers. Now more and more women are being empowered. Theyre coming forward and saying people in positions of power have done things that are wrong. I think thats a very good thing. I think that republicans need to listen to it. Im very proud that mitt romney stood up and said he believes roy moores accuser. Were talking about whether or not a man has the judgment pardon me, were talking about a man who has been accused of Sexual Misconduct with a 14yearold. On top of this, this is a man that does not reflect american values. His values are homosexuals should be made into a criminal class. If youre muslim, you cant serve in congress. He knows better than the supreme court. He doesnt follow the rule of law and he can post the Ten Commandments even though federal law says you cant. Why do you think people are standing by him . Its tribalism. There are people Still Standing by him and thats what is so head scratching and so perplexing to me and so many other people . Unfortunately because we are a divided nation, it is tribalism where we have a lot of people hearing, oh well, it came from the Washington Post so its got to be the elites taking us down. Weve scapegoated as a Republican Party the acela corridor and people in power. Now that people are exposing horrible things, people are inclined not to believe it because we have a president that screams fake news and anything with a reputation is somehow making things up. Its the same thing here. It was Andrew Breitbart who actually exposed and came on the map. He exposed Anthony Weiners horrid sext to minors and other women but now hes defending roy moore. The worm has turned and Andrew Breitbarts legacy has been betrade. So the mentality of us against them which has been used a lot when assessing and analyzing the Trump Administration in general, considering the fact that it was sort of an east coast Washington Post paper revealing this stuff about roy moore. Do you think thats whats playing into this whole thing . I think thats definitely playing into this. Remember, the Washington Post is the outlet that exposed the access Hollywood Video with President Trump, then candidate trump, about a month before the election. So theres real feeling from sort of the trump voter that theyre out to get us and ive heard that when im talking to some of my sources. You know, they say while this source does seem solid or the story seems solid, the reporting seems fair, there is a real question of why now and this just happens to be the same paper that did this to President Trump. So its the idea of the swamp, you know, fake news, us against them very much. And its really playing its interesting to wonder if it would be a local alabama paper had broke it if the same sense would be there. Im interested to see what roy moore has to say with regards to his defense, that is for sure. Not very High Expectations there. Evan siegfried, eliza collins, thank you for joining us. Next, a comeback for democrats. They may have swept tuesdays offyear elections but have they found the right recipe for winning . Thats next. But on the inside, i feel like chronic, widespread pain. Fibromyalgia may be invisible to others, but my pain is real. Fibromyalgia is thought to be caused by overactive nerves. Lyrica is believed to calm these nerves. Im glad my doctor prescribed lyrica. For some, lyrica delivers effective relief for moderate to even severe fibromyalgia pain. And improves function. Lyrica may cause serious allergic reactions, suicidal thoughts or actions. Tell your doctor right away if you have these, new or worse depression, unusual changes in mood or behavior, swelling, trouble breathing, rash, hives, blisters, muscle pain with fever, tired feeling, or blurry vision. Common side effects dizziness, sleepiness, weight gain, swelling of hands, legs and feet. Dont drink alcohol while taking lyrica. Dont drive or use machinery until you know how lyrica affects you. Those whove had a drug or alcohol problem may be more likely to misuse lyrica. With less pain, i can do more with my family. Talk to your doctor today. See if lyrica can help. The market. Love. Its what makes a subaru, a subaru. Welcome back, everybody. Democrats are still reveling in their tuesday night electoral blowout. Can the party take the credit or was President Trump responsible for turning out the opposition . Joining me now, Debbie Dingle of michigan and Jess Mcintosh a former Clinton Campaign manager. What lessons can be learned from virginia do you think in this takeaway . Virginia was an exciting night and it actually can be applied across the country where we saw progressive candidates win in some deeply red seats that were very unlikely. I think its a little bit of both. One is absolutely a National Trump backlash. People are rejecting his agenda and it doesnt represent american values. I think we saw democrats put a lot of efforts into grassroots organizing, knocking on doors, turning out communities more than the warfare that they had typically engaged in and that really played. It was also the kinds of candidates they ran. These are real people. A lot of women who decided to run for the first time in their lives,ot career politicians and were elected in a landslide. It proved that we can win as long as we stick to the issues and represent the communities and the values that america wants us to. Congresswoman, can we applied the Lessons Learned from virginia to deep red states, do you think . Im certainly glad with what happened on tuesday night. Id rather be in those shoes. But i think weve got to next Election Year is a lifetime away. Weve got to take and learn messages, but i think she did an excellent job of summarizing where we are. We have to talk about the issues that matter to working men and women. We didnt do as as well as we should have. We have to tailor it to each community that candidates are running in, but we need to talk about issues that matter to the voter next year. But if you look at jess, if you look at whats happening to roy moore, for instance, a democrat cant even beat someone like roy moore and all thats been leveled against him. The odds arent great there. Alabama is the deepest of deep red states. However, we saw the first polls come out since the pedophile scandal and it showed doug jones beating roy moore in alabama. It will be a tough uphill battle, but its very much on the table. And the contrast there between these two candidates. Doug jones is known for prosecuting the kkk and roy moore is now known for dating underage girls. I mean the contrast there could not be any more stark. So i think its appalling that the gop is standing with roy moore, especially the alabama gop, saying they dont even care if hes guilty. Its bad enough that the republicans in washington are pretending that they dont know whether or not he did what he did. But i think the whole party is going to be tarred with that. And the democrats get to run with a really principled man who is a member of the community who can focus on the issues. Thats going to turn off a lot of moderate and even conservative alabama voters if they had to hear the circus sideshow on the one side and doug jones can talk to them about the issues that matter on the other. Congresswoman, another thing that has to be top of mind for dems is russia. I know youve introduced a bill by requiring Voting Machines to produce a paper record of their ballot. Is that a concern for democrats Going Forward, russian influence . Well, i think that is one of the issues that matters to people and the integrity of the election and whether your vote really matters, matters to everybody voting. But we really need to be talking about jobs and we need to be talking about health care and Pension Security and issues that matter. I think its going to matter deeply in these deep red states. If we dont talk about everyday working men and women, the fact that their wages are stagstagna that they arent as secure as ten years ago, thats whats going to help us win this election is that they see us with a better deal. A lot of the criticism on the democratic party, congresswoman, i want you to react first, is the fact that the average age by party of Democratic House leadership is 72 years old. Republican house leadership 48 years old. Are the democrats just not getting it, congresswoman . Is it time to play to their Younger Voters . Or is it about getting the swing voter . Did the republicans vote for a 70yearold president . Lets start there. Good point. I think republicans and democrats have to vote for voters that are reflective of each of their districts. I think democrats get it far more than republicans do. Republicans are having a hard time keeping leadership in either party and Mitch Mcconnell isnt i have a great deal of respect for all of our leaders so i dont want to take how do you play the younger voter if that in fact is a criticism . We have a lot of younger members in our caucus and they are out working the country from one end to the other, and leadership reflects the population of this country so that we have people of all ages in these different jobs. Congresswoman dingell and Jess Mcintosh, thank you for joining us. Tinseltown is taking a stand. Demonstrators have taken the streets to protest Sexual Harassment in hollywood. Power dependability awards for cars, trucks and suvs two years in a row. Thats amazing. Chevys a name you can trust i think that its the kind of thing that has been going on for a lot longer than anybody would like to admit. I think its going to take a lot of people rethinking the way that they approach those things, the way they think of them. I certainly hope that whats been happening recently of people coming forward and being willing to come forward, i hope that doesnt stop. I hope it continues. I hope that it just changes the way that men and women relate to each other. Another day and even more support for women who have come out against Sexual Harassment. The Silver Lining to all of this today, a march in the streets of los angeles with more fallout one month after the Harvey Weinstein story first broke. With distributors dropping the new louis ck movie and another film reshooting Kevin Spaceys role with a new actor, some hollywood productions are in chaos. Saturday night the governors awards, hollywoods first oscars party of the season went without a single mention of the biggest scandal in the industrys history so what can we expect in more shows to come . Joining me are marlo and karen desoto. Marlo, im going to start with you. Not a single mention at the governors aawards. Kind of weird. Its definitely weird. And you heard that people wanted to talk off the record a lot. Why . About the allegations but not on the record. I think people are still kind of theres a lot of apprehension when it comes to talking about these things. These are people that they worked with for a long time. And it is you know, industries always have a hard time, except for media. Media is good for exposing the evils of its industry. When something does something bad in media, immediately everyone calls them out on it. But we need to or wed be hypocrit hypocrites. But hollywood, they have a hard time shining a light on the wrong things that they do. Youve heard a lot of actresses say i dont want to comment because im so angry and i dont want to be misquoted. At the end of the day theres no side to be on there. Theres no wrong way to say anything. Exactly. You could even take a bad thing and turn it into something positive. When Sexual Harassment cases started being covered from insurance companies, what you saw was a lot of policies against Sexual Harassment, which was fantastic. Unfortunately the problem is now its part of the employee handbook and they have binding arbitration, which again is keeping women quiet. So maybe we just need to have different cycles of exposing Sexual Harassment to keep on evolving and Going Forward and exposing it. Could louis ck see more legal repercussions because he has admitted to doing in fact what he did. And what he did was ask women if he could actually pleasure himself in front of them. Is that in fact even illegal . Of course it is. Anyone whos within your personal space and is scaring and putting you in fear is something that you could sue for and also file criminal charges on. It differs from state to state. But yasmin, whats so disturbing about it is what he was said to do, and him getting excited off of women being frightened or scared when he did it. That to me is very disturbing and it sounds like he is capable of much worse. And yes, of course, i would tell any criminal defendant either civilly or criminally not to confess. Yes, that is going to lead to problems for him, and it should. Looking at it in the way that you just put it was media is calling them out, is this something louis ck could recover from hat Harvey Weinsteins and Kevin Spaceys could not because hes already known as a vulgar guy. His comedy is so vulgar. Hes written this apology letter so in five years he can come back. This is who he is and this is not something were surprised by where were more surprised by the kevin spacey thing . I do think this is a watershed moment. Gosh, i hope so. I do think theres no coming back from this. In hollywood they do have an unfortunate history of forgiving and forgetting. Look at mel gibson. Last year mel gibson was dominated for the best director oscar. Mel gibson has done some terrible things. Theres a lot of people in hollywood i mean if you get branded as a, quote unquote, bad boy, you can get away with i dont want to say murder but you get a lot of stuff. Charlie sheen. Charlie sheen has abused of a lot of women. Robbie doert downey jr. Hes been held in high regard. He just gets treated as a punch line, charlie sheen. He was on a sitcom, two and a half men. Its kind of perplexing. Karen, last question to you. Weve got investigations on weinstein open in los angeles and new york. Whats the chance hes going to be charged . Ive tried these cases in a timely manner when the allegations had just taken place. When youre talking about things that are five or ten or 15 years, i cant stress enough how difficult these are. Thats why im going to urge all women and men to report them as soon as they happen because the problem is, is its very difficult for a person or an attorney or a prosecutor to try these cases after a lot of time. Why . Because you cant corroborate it, you dont have a rape kit and cases like the csi and forensic, jurors want to see evidence. Rape kits. So unfortunately the more time that goes by, the more difficult it is. So thats why im very happy to see the positive outcome of this, which is people hopefully will report them as soon as it happens and stand up for those people who maybe in the past were not able to. Easier said than done, though. Of course. Despite where were at now. Church members come together for the First Time Since the Deadly Church shooting. We go beyond the divide with a former marine who quit the nra. But next, we go inside the head of russian president Vladimir Putin. The amazing new iphone 8 is at at t. And we know youll love it. Because we know you want more. More great camera features and more power. And more than just unlimited data, we give you unlimited plans with hbo included for life. Because you deserve more entertainment. And more spokespeople. Talking like this, saying the word more. At t. Its time for more. Am i too close . I feel like im too close. Get the iphone 8 and with all at t unlimited plans, get hbo for life. Only from at t. Where theres smoke, theres fire. There is a whole lot of smoke. And it also seems to me like it might be another one of those cases where the coverup is worse than the actual crime. All right, President Trump drawing fire for appearing to side with russian president putin over allegations that russian interference in the u. S. Election. The white house doing damage control today. What the president is trying to do right now is recognize the gravest threat that america faces is north Korea Developing Nuclear weapons. And Nuclear Weapons in north korea is a greater threat than russia buying facebook ads in america. I want to bring in daniel hoffman, a retired cia officer and frank figliuzzi. Frank, im going to start with you. Trump daucalling john brennan, James Clapper and jim comey political hacks yesterday when asked about evidence existing to support russia meddling in u. S. Elections. Whats your reaction to that . Well, its an unfortunate statement because it seems to ignore all the career professionals who do this for a living and develop intelligence and advise the white house for a living. Thats what he needs to focus on. And hes trying to have it both ways. First hes trying to say that he believes that putin truly believes his government didnt meddle in his election and then hes consequently trying to say that he Still Believes in our intelligence services. But heres the problem, those two statements are mutually exclusive. You cant say that you believe Vladimir Putin and you still believe the conclusions of the u. S. Intel services. They have said conclusively the russian government meddled with our election, tried to at least. And if you say that putin doesnt believe that himself, then youre thumbing your nose at your own intelligence services. Daniel, if you hear the president say this about your former boss, lets say, your reaction to this. How do you take it, brush it off and move or or does it undermine the work that youre doing out there . I dont think it undermines the work as all. My experience at cia, we all certainly had our political belief and we expressed those at the ballot box but as far as doing the job, i really dont think partisan politics gets in the way at all. Frank, youve got the entire basically gop, the dems, they dont trust putin, a lot of people not trusting putin. If youve been in politics any longer than the last ten months you dont trust putin but you have the president seeming like he trusts the president of russia. Heres what heres what President Trump needs to understand. Vladimir putin doesnt want to be your friend. The best you can do is keep him close to your vest by maintaining a dialogue. Everything that Vladimir Putin believes in is not in the interests of the United States. His desire is to disrupt u. S. Society, having us doubting our own election system, having us increasingly polarized, and its gravy if he gets to actually help pick our president. But the number one goal is to disrupt us, and thats what hes done and thats what he continues to do. The sooner that President Trump understands that, the better off well all be. Daniel, isnt there a way to work with putin in regards to syria or regards to north korea while not necessarily trusting him and havent president s in the past done exactly that . Isnt that what our intelligence agencies do every single day . Yeah, if you consider our relationship with russia like a venn diagram with a little shaded space where we Work Together and unshaded space where we dont, we see the world differently. Vladimir putin has propped up the assad regime, enabling iran to gain a stronger foot hold in syria. I just dont think we see the world the same way as the russians and its a great challenge. There are very limited places where weve been able to Work Together. In space, for example, which is fine. But i think its a real challenge. I had a russian contact years ago who told me that the way they looked at the United States, you know, if we had a really nice house and the russians house was dilapidated, theyd burn ours down so we could live in misery together. Thats kid of the way they approach it and thats the way they want things to be. If things are bad in the United States, then it doesnt reflect so poorly on russia. Putin im sure will be telling his own people that were throwing stoenes from our glass house, city on an exceptional hill. Hes very strongly critical of us for his own regime security. If putin is accused of corruption, hell look at the u. S. And say look at them. You want to be a democracy as the United States . Theyre as corrupt as we are considering whats come out. Im thinking thats the way in which youre going, daniel. Frank, first to you, what do you think russias end game in all of this is . Russia is sitting back enjoying this very much right now because as i said, their number one goal is to just keep us disrupted. Think that we cant trust our own election system. The more they can disrupt and cause chaos here, thats what theyre all about, and theyre doing a great job at it right now. Daniel . Yeah, russia wants us to be weakened. They want to drive a wedge between the United States and our western allies, particularly german. They want to limit our weight in asia and theyre countering us in south asia, the middle east east, even in our own backyard here in latin america. A strong United States is bad for russia and thats certainly the way they view us. They want to target us worldwide. What weve seen over the past 20 years, a resurgent russia. I think if i were to sit down and have a private conversation with the two of you, id learn a lot of interesting things. Daniel, frank, thank you both for joining me. Now lets go beyond the scope, everybody. California governor jerry brown and Michael Bloomberg in germany pledging to continue to work with World Leaders to back the Paris Climate Accord despite President Trump announcing u. S. Withdrawal earlier this year. And in maine, Governor Paul Lepage issuing a defiant statement as voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum to expand medicaid under obamacare. Lepage an ally of President Trump, vetoed expansion bills on five separate occasions. He says he wont move to implement the expansion until state lawmakers can fully fund it. Well be right back, everybody. Your brain is an amazing thing. But as you get older, it naturally begins to change, causing a lack of sharpness, or even trouble with recall. Thankfully, the breakthrough in prevagen helps your brain and actually improves memory. The secret is an ingredient originally discovered. In jellyfish. In clinical trials, prevagen has been shown to improve shortterm memory. Prevagen. The name to remember. A definitely believe that there should be a waiting period. You should apply to buy to own a gun and buy a gun and have to wait until you get checked out. Mental health is included in that. But i think theres no system in place and every state is different. Again, in virginia, its very easy to purchase a gun from walmart. This morning a texas church reopened its doors one week after two dozen people were killed there in a mass shooting last weekend, but the First Baptist church of Sutherland Springs wont be holding the usual services this sunday. Instead the church will serve as a memorial to those who lost their lives. Its only been a week since the Sutherland Springs shooting and just over a month since the terror attack in las vegas. As Mass Shootings become more and more frequent, some nra members are beginning to turn away from the organization rejecting nra rhetoric and saying enough is enough. Joining me now, joe plenzler, a retired marine corps combat veteran. Thanks for joining me this afternoon. The basic question here, why did you quit the nra . I quit because in honest and good faith, i couldnt put my name and money behind the organization anymore. Last spring when a friend of mine alerted me to the clench fisted Truth Campaign i saw it. I saw it for what it was which was a straightup propaganda campaign, designed to elicit fear and put money in the hands of politicians that want to vote in favor of gun companies. Why did you join in the first place . I joined because all the gun clubs that i ever belonged to required nra membership in order to be a member at the gun club. So i never really paid a whole lot of attention to the nras rhetoric and just held my nose and sent in my check in order to keep my skills proficient. And youre speaking out now in regards to gun control why . Whats inspired you to do that . Absolutely. Were at the point now where the level of casualties that these Mass Shootings are causing are eclipsing combat casualties. In 2004 during the second battle of fallujah, over weeks of grinding street by street and house by house fighting, we took fewer casualties there than ten minutes in las vegas. So what needs to look . Theyre looking at bump stocks and congress hasnt held a hearing on bump stocks. The nra supporting increased regulations on bump stocks and they back pedaled on that. I feel like were at a standstill in regard to any changes on gun control here. In reality we only need to look we dont need to look any further than our own elected officials. We need to work both sides. When the president talked about its a Mental Health issue and hes correct in that. About twothirds of all the violent gun deaths in the country are due to suicide. But onethird of them are due to homicides. The fact that we would just admire that problem and pretend like it doesnt exist, its insane. You have a lot of people saying this is our right. This is our Second Amendment right to bear arms. Are you proposing to take guns away from responsible gun owners . Absolutely not. Im a Second Amendment pro opponent. I believe in the right to bear arms to defend our life, liberty and property but its not an absolute right. We already restrict ownership of certain types of firearms. And for me i just dont see any reason for us to make for sale military grade firearms to the civilian public. I read an interesting article today, joe, about the culture in this country and how thats part of the problem. If you look at the Second Amendment right, for instance, its saying we have a right to own. Whereas in fact you need to earn the right to own a gun. Is it about changing the culture of gun ownership. You talk about the culture and the myth of the American West and how a lot of men mostly men look at that issue. But if you just look at the overall number of guns in this country, that is directly correlated with the amount of gun violence we have. When folks say more guns are the answer, if that truly was the case, wed be the safest country on the planet. Theres one firearm for every person in the country. So what are you doing to help change this, besides using your voice . Were speaking out. Right now were putting together a coalition of veterans who are willing to call people to come to the center and Work Together. Folks on the left who dont want to bunl whdge whatsoever, they to move to the center. And folks who have this fantasy theyre going to ban all guns need to come to the center as all. What were all for is Safer Communities and i think we can get there. I quickly want you to tell this story about something you served with and how shocked they were about what was going on in this country. Can you quickly give me that story . As far as someone that you had served with had told you a story about what was going on with and how they were shocked with so much gun violence. Im sorry, drawing a blank on that one. Okay. No, i just remember you telling me someone that you had served with in this country had come to you an said i cant believe whats going on and something that we really have to change. Absolutely. And when i wrote that oped for when i wrote my letter of resignation to wayne la pierre quitting the nra, a lot of veterans came to me and said, hey, i quit too or i quit years ago. My response was i was embarrassed i had this epiphany so late. Yeah, theres a lot of us that feel this way. Ive been contacted by a lot of e. R. Docs who say thanks for speaking up. Im hoping that when veterans weigh into this conversation, it gives folks it gives folks pause to think and consider where they are on the issue, but also motivates them to kind of, like i said, come to the center and work for the common good. All right, thank you. Well be right back, everybody. Thanks a lot. Times up, insufficient prenatal care. And administrative paperwork, your days of drowning people are numbered. Same goes for you, budget overruns. And rising costs, wipe that smile off your face. Were coming for you too. At optum, were partnering across the Health System to tackle its biggest challenges. At optum, were partnering across the Health System ththe next energyngs toto power our dreams,re will be american energy. The unpredictability of a flaree may weigh on your mind. Thinking about what to avoid, where to go, and how to work around your uc. Thats how i thought it had to be. But then i talked to my doctor about humira, and learned humira can help get and keep uc under control. When certain medications havent worked well enough. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening Heart Failure. Before treatment, get tested for tb. Tell your doctor if youve been to areas where certain fungal infections are common and if youve had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flulike symptoms or sores. Dont start humira if you have an infection. Raise your expectations and ask your gastroenterologist if humira may be right for you. With humira, control is possible. Welcome back, everybody. In light of the texas shooting, the president weighing in. Take a listen. And i think that Mental Health is your problem here. This was a very, based on preliminary reports, very deranged individual, a lot of problems over a long period of time. We have a lot of Mental Health problems in our country, as do other countries. But this isnt a guns situation. I mean we could go into it, but its a little bit soon to go into it. All right. Im going to refer to a study by Adam Langford from the university of alabama. The u. S. Makes up less than 5 of the World Population but owns over 40 of the worlds guns. The more guns, the more Mass Shootings. Switzerland has the second highest gun ownership to the u. S. In a developed country. To buy a gun in that country, its not easy and its the gun homicide rate in 2004 was high, but still a fraction of that of the United States. The president mentioning Mental Health. So in fact our Mental Health numbers line up with all other developed countries, i. E. Not a Mental Health problem. So we have lots of guns, easy to buy them. One more thing, the way we think about them. The Second Amendment says american citizens of the right to buy arms. What if we think about it this way. Potential gun owners have to earn that right. An idea that shapes gun laws. While that may not stop deaths by gun it could curb it and thats a step in the right direction. The news continues now with my colleague Ayman Mohyeldin. I am Ayman Mohyeldin at msnbc World Headquarters here in new york. And President Trump on cleanup duty overseas trying to clarify remarks that certainly made it seem like he believes Vladimir Putin over his own intelligence agencies when it comes to election meddling. Well break that down. Roy moore remains the republican candidate for an Alabama Senate seat, even after accusations of Inappropriate Conduct with a 14yearold girl when he was in his 30s. Could he survive this scandal . And breaking developments in the middle east. A mystery that has engulfed two American Allies and has once again led to mixed messages from the president and his secretary of state. More on that story in just a bit. But we begin with the president overseas. In the middle of his asia trip, trump forced to clarify remarks he made after a
