There are other witnesses who say he didnt have anything. You have Law Enforcement who says he had a gun. Part of the problem here is that any time these things happen, everybody has different viewpoints. Our goal is to get down to the truth, to make sure all of the facts come out, and quite frankly, expand on this conversation in a sense of Law Enforcement. Dont release some information, dont play hide the ball if youre going to release what happened. Release everything. So theres a lot of different factors here. I heard he was buying a house here, i heard he might be muslim. Can you tell us any more about mr. Scott . Mr. Scott, in speaking with his loved ones, i want you to understand that this man was loved by his family and he loved his family. Hes been married for 20 years. He has seven children. They have a very big family, and they are a closeknit family, okay . Its hard because when these things happen, we end up in a situation where were talking about another person that just got shot. But we have to remember that they are human. At the appropriate time, you will find out a lot more about who mr. Scott was, what he meant to his family, what he meant to his community, and that is best to come from those that were closest to him. Did mr. Scott have the legal right to possess a weapon . [ inaudible ] there was a gun near his body. What does the family have to say about that . We cant speak on what is here and what is there. There are a lot of things floating around. I personally have seen different photos. I dont know the origins of the photos, and it would be irresponsible for me and irresponsible of anybody to rush to judgment of what they see of pictures popping up on line all the time. They come from different sources. We will be working to get these answers and hope to know what happened as time goes on. Law enforcement said a gun was found, plain and simple. What is your direct response to the assertion by the chief that a gun was found . Our direct response is this. That is what the chief says. I havent seen any evidence, none of you all have seen any evidence that a gun was there. That is what the people are saying. Police sources do confirm its authentic. It does show a gun there. I cant speak on conversations anyone has had with the police that i have not had with the police. With all the information coming out, did he have the legal right to possess a gun . Did he own a gun and did he carry a weapon in his normal course of activity . Were still looking into the facts. My understanding, based on talking with his family, is that he did not own a gun, that he did not habitually carry a gun, and as far as we know, we still dont know if there was or was not a gun even there. There are witnesses who are saying no gun was there. There are witnesses who say that a gun was put there. There are witnesses who say that a gun may have been pulled out of the car or they saw something on the ground beside him. There is too much talk. Were here to get answers and were not going to deal in skepticism. Can you unequivocally say he did not own a weapon . As far as we know, at this point in time, no, he did not own a gun. Did he have a permit . I dont know if he had a permit or not. Will you commit that you will address the media after you view the video . No, i would be lying if i said im going to commit to addressing the media after viewing the video. I cant answer hypotheticals when we have not had the opportunity to see whats there. You just stood there and stoked the situation by saying he was holding a book. If you find he was holding a gun, and you dont believe he was pointing it at him, wouldnt that settle the issue for the greater good of the community . My greater good is with this family first. That has to be understood. You also have to keep in mind that this concept of transparency, the police shot mr. Scott. The police are the Public Servants. Hes a citizen. So this concept of transparency, you know, yes, we want transparency. Yes, we dont create the facts, we live with the facts, okay . But you cant take the burden that is placed on Law Enforcement as sworn officers and Public Servants and put that on a deceased person or their family who is in mourning. But i will say that upon reviewing what is there, we dont know how many hours of footage there is. And one thing is, we like to speak and answer facts that we know and have seen, and we dont hypothesize. Could you release a photo of mr. Scott that we could use in our general reviews . Yes, we could do that. You said mr. Scott had a general disability. Could you describe this disability in detail . Mr. Scott was involved in a very bad accident approximately a year ago, suffered some pretty severe bodily injuries as well as some head trauma in that. I have not looked at his medical records. That is something that has to be looked at in further detail on our end. But at the end of the day, he was disabled. That is our understanding. And again, were still in the early processes of evaluating everything thats there. [ inaudible ] did anybody in his family witness the shooting . Yes. Its my understanding that his wife saw him get shot and killed, and thats something that she will never, ever forget. Have you talked to the city officials about this, that youve had conversation with them . The extent of the conversation with the Public Officials here in charlotte has been our request that we be able to view this video theyve been referencing. Theyve been responsive, and when we leave here, well be moving forward to review that video late this afternoon. [ inaudible ] yes. My name is justin bamberg. Could you spell that . [ spelled ] athank you all very much. Thank you. All right. The scene youve been watching there, thats from charlotte, North Carolina. Justin bamberg is the name of the lawyer you were hearing from most of the time there. He was joined by two other attorneys for the family of Keith Lamont Scott, Keith Lamont Scott who was shot by police in charlotte on tuesday. He was exiting his vehicle in the parking lot of an apartment complex. The dispute that has emerged in the wake of that, and this has led to all sorts of protests, and the two cases here have led to violence in charlotte, the dispute between the family and Police Officers has come down to this. The family has said keith l. Scott was exiting the vehicle with a book. The police say he was exiting the vehicle with a gun. Now, there is some video that is out there, at least the police have it, its not out there for the public to see yet. The police insisted he had a gun. The families are saying, the lawyers are saying they want to review that video, they want to see it. The lawyers just indicated that later this afternoon apparently the family, the lawyers will be reviewing that Video Evidence. Justin bamberg pointedly did not commit to addressing the media after he reviews that, but a very central dispute here. The police chief in charlotte insisting that chief scott had a gun. The family saying it was a book. There is one sort of grainy picture thats emerged that sort of made the rounds on line that some people show there was a gun on the ground. Thats all thats out there in terms of video and still photography. Ron mott is down there in charlotte. Hes covering the story. So ron, as i understand, the family this afternoon is about to go view the Video Evidence. What do we know about what exactly exists in terms of a video record . Reporter we do know the officer who shot mr. Scott did not have a body camera, but other supporting officers did. And so video collected from those officers body cameras will be analyzed. We dont know exactly what the family will be shown or, in fact, if theyll be shown the totality of Video Evidence at the scene of that far apartment complex shooting sunday night. We were anticipating members of the scott family would appear here at this news conference. The Attorney Justin Bamberg said they were too overcome with grief at this point to stand up in front of the media and talk about their lost loved one and this whole process has got to be very emotional for them to watch video of their father and brother and son die, basically lose his life in that parking lot. The critical distinction here is this book versus gun narrative. The daughter of mr. Scott was quick to get out on social media saying police shot her dad while he was holding a book. You mentioned this video. There is a still circulating on the web that appears to show an object on the ground, a darkcolored object, that clearly appears to me, at least, to not be a book. Police say they recovered a gun at the location and now its a matter of whether the family is going to be satisfied with what they see in the Video Evidence presented to them this afternoon whether the family will continue to say to this community, please, if youre going to protest, do so peacefully, or if the family is going to pursue even more vigorously the separate investigation they have launched here to make sure what happened to their loved one was not lawful or justifiable. They want some action taken against the people involved in making the decision to use deadly force. The emotions are high here, obviously. You can hear in the attorneys presentation here that the family, 48 hours after losing a loved one, is going through a lot emotionally and theyre about to go through even more. Steve . Ron, if you could explain to viewers there, from the standpoint of Law Enforcement, the police is emphatic that keith scott had a gun, but theyre not willing to release the video that exists. What is their defense of not releasing this, and is there any resour recourse to force rhethe releasf that video . I think its possible there may be recourse to challenge this decision, because state law takes effect on october 1st that essentially says dash cam video, essentially any Video Evidence collected by Law Enforcement in the state of North Carolina is not considered public record. The law also contains provisions that at the discretion of Law Enforcement, they can show that video to people who appear in the video. So if you are, for example, pulled over for a speeding ticket, the cops dash cam is recording. You would be offered an opportunity to see that video provided its not memory of an ongoing investigation. Or loved ones who have lost someone in a Police Encounter are also allowed to view that video. Thats what police are using as the rationale for not releasing this publicly. Clearly emotions are high here in charlotte, and clearly people can look at the Video Evidence and come to completely different conclusions. The police chief made it clear at the press conference this morning that they have no plans of ever releasing that video to the public, but they are extending that courtesy, if you will, to the family. You mentioned the high emotions down there. We have seen two nights of protests that have turned into violence. Were coming towards the end of day 3 here. Whats the expectation of tonight on the ground there. I ran into a pastor downtown who said make sure you pass the word that a lot of religious leaders are Walking Around downtown today, theyre trying to talk people out of what they did last night. There was a relatively small group out last night. Whether there is a presence of largely assembled officers and there is a protestly. Media also included in that narrative. We have no particular staging of Law Enforcement if a support role only. We dont know if they are told basically to stay away from areas hit last night until they are called in. Police are walking the beat downtown. Downtown is lightly traveled today. A lot of businesses allowed workers to stay home. Telecommute today. There is no curfew, which is a little bit of a surprise to folks, but a lot of people say it wouldnt be fair for the 99 of people here who are lawabiding to have their freedom taken away for a night or two because of something something is happening on the ground. As you can imagine, the issue of the protests, the issue of the shooting rkts making its wam. Donald trump weighing in today on what he calls the chaos and violence on display in charlotte. The people who will suffer the most as a result of these rights are lawabiding africanamerican residents who live in these communities where the crime is so rampant. Its their jobs, housing markets, schools, Economic Conditions that will suffer. And the first duty of government is to protect their wellbeing and safety. We have to do that. There is no compassion in tolerating lawless conduct. So that is donald trump diagnosing what he sees as the problem, what he sees as chaos and violence in american cities. The question is what is his plan, then, to address it . Donald trump yesterday introduced a new idea, a new idea that is familiar to some people in this country. It involves the Widespread Adoption of a program known as stop and frisk. Stop and frisk has been put into practice across the country but its drawn particular scrutiny in the nations largest city, in new york city. It was first aggressively used there in the 1990s. Then Police Commissioner bill bratton under rudy giuliani, who was mayor at the time, did zero tolerance policy when it came to crime. Police officers would frequently stop people on the streets, they would pat them down whether there was evidence they were committing a crime or not. Stop and frisk became a widespread policing tool, so much that in 2011, new york Police Stopped nearly 700,000 people under the program. The vast majority of people stopped, the peak year for stop and frisk, 80 of those people were completely innocent of any crimes. You could see here the opposition coming. You could see here the people who were stopped, it was disproportionately nonwhite. Blacks and latinos making up much more of it. Many people believe it showed how everyday policing in new york was deeply steeped in racial profiling. There was a landmark case here and the judge ruled it unconstitutional, at least the way the program was being played by the nypd. Michael bloomberg, who was then the mayor, bemoaned that decision. Here we are a couple years later, and according to bill de blasio, who is mate or now, new york saw the opposite result. Three years straight, crime has gone down, and bill bratton, who has been one of the foremost Police Leaders in america, made it very clear that stop and frisk was proven, ultimately, not to be effective as a safety tool, that the absence of it allowed us to become safer because we could work on the deep relationship between police and community. This is now a professor of criminal justice at monroe college. He joins us here. From your standpoint, Law Enforcement background. Somebody out there who is just hearing about this today, donald trump wants stop and frisk across the country. Thats what hes suggesting now. As a practical standpoint, as a Police Officer, what did that mean to you . Youre on the beat. What do you do . Its not a practice, it was a tool. He saw someone who might be involved in it, hes allowed to stop and question him. Frisk is not even a part of it yet. He frisks him if he believes that person has a weapon and might pose a danger. Sometimes it mighten even happen, but thats a key and hes using it as a policy to look for things of na nature. That policydriven kind of behavior is what all the people in new york city, as well as thank you. Let me pick up on that, because the claim from donald trump, and you hear him make these statements on the campaign trail, it would sort of be he says this all the time. Police knows who the bad guys are, but they are constrained, they are constrained right now from going after them. Maybe we cant pin a specific crime, but we know these people are up to no good. Is there anything to that . If we can, we, but thats not been my experience or any experience of my leagued. I was looking back here in new york at what the if meteorology. Whites were strongly against it, latinos strongi inly supported. I see both sides. I believe we can stop people without overusing stop and frisk. The Police Officers are doing a phenomenal job. Crime has gone down. We dont need to return back to the days where were doing 685,000 stops. One thing we dont talk about, hamp is our ability to recruit members of minority. I dont believe what dmr. Trump has said, i dont think many people believe it. The candidates take to the same stage for the first time together. Numbers have been floating around the past few days. Weve got new polls in the swing states, brand new National Polls. We have a brand new wall street journal poll that just came out, and we thought we would take a big picture look at where exactly this race stands right now. What is working for the candidates, what isnt working for them, what are their Biggest Challenges . Without any further ado, lets start with Hillary Clinton. What is going right for her . The biggest picture thing for Hillary Clinton is the Bottom Line National polls this week, you can see two of them have come out. Our nbc polls yesterday put her head to head with donald trump. She was still up six. The survey monkey poll, he had her up by five. Here we are more than a week later, she is in very good shape in these National Polls. Also there is this. This is an argument that the Clinton Campaign is pushing, that she is more temperamentally suited to be president than donald trump. And again, from our new msnbc wall street journal poll, look at this. 2 to 1, people are saying Hillary Clinton. Along those same lines, check this one out on the questionnaire. This is about the knowledge and experience to be president. Again, overwhelmingly here. Easily better 2 to 1 people choosing Hillary Clinton. This is something her campaign wants. People thinking about when theyre in that voting booth, maybe theyre leaning towards trump, they want them to pause and say, can i really see this guy as president . What isnt working for the Clinton Campaign right now. Number one here is honesty and trustworthiness. We have heard this over and over again. Look at this again in our wall street journal poll. We ask, who is more honest and straightforward . Donald trump scores on that one and not Hillary Clinton. That is a problem for her. What else is going wrong for her . Take a look at this. Its a question about motivation. This is about enthusiasm. We asked people, are you voting mainly for Hillary Clinton, were asking Hillary Clinton voters here. Are you mainly voting for Hillary Clinton or are you voting against donald trump . You see a bear majority saying theyre voting for Hillary Clinton. 2012, much more enthusiasm for obama. 72 primarily for him, 81 said their vote was primarily for him. The question when you see a number like this is, is that going to be enough motivation to get all of those clinton voters out there . If they dont feel as strongly as her as maybe obama voters felt about him four years ago. That is the challenge for Hillary Clinton in terms of donald trump. What is going right for donald trump right now . We showed you the National Polls that have been very good for Hillary Clinton this week, but donald trump has been getting some good news in blue states. Now, remember, hes got to try to hold what romney had in 2012 and build, pick off some blue states. Look at this. If you look right now at the poll averages in four blue states, nevada, ohio, iowa, even florida, by the barest margins in florida, donald trump has actually taken the lead in poll averages there. In terms of flipping blue states, donald trump has made some progress. That is going right for him. What else is going right for donald trump . We can show you this as well. The blue collar vote. We always talk about that difference between whites with college degrees, whites without college degrees. Were really talking more about socioeconomic status, culture, that sort of thing. Donald trump with white voters without a college degree, hes been running pretty strong particularly in states like iowa and nevada where hes improving off what barack obama had. So what is not working for donald trump . We can show you number one. This is a big problem for donald trump and its this. Does he have a ceiling, does he have a ceiling thats going to come back to haunt him . What i mean is 61 of all voters say they have a negative view of him. Hillary clintons numbers very high, too, but its only 52 . If youre donald trump ask youre in a real tight race with Hillary Clinton, maybe youre a point or two points behind and you need to pick off those key swing voters, are those key swing voters the ones who have a more negative view of you than Hillary Clinton . Is that going to impose a ceiling on him. That is another question for donald trump and weve seen this before. It is the suburbs. It is the flip side of what i just said. The blue collar vote hes doing really well with, but look at this, white voters with a college degree. Basically youll find these folks in suburbs in a lot of cases. This is a group that republicans have always won. You can go back to when they started doing exit polls. Republicans never lose this group, but now donald trump is losing to Hillary Clinton by six points. That is a big thing for donald trump. That is why he struggled in virginia, colorado, and denver. That is where this race stands right now. And the next big chance to shake all this up is coming four days from now at Hofstra University in long island. Thats where the first president ial debate is going to be held. Nbcs monica alba reporting that Hillary Clinton is home today in chappaqua getting ready. Shes reviewing a lot of tape of trump performances in previous debates. Trump is spending the day in philadelphia. He stopped to get cheesesteaks. Hes also being asked is how his debate prep is going. Take a look. [ inaudible ] im here. I think its going fine. Democrats for trump. Democrats for trump. Joining us now from washington, d. C. Is brett odonnell. He is the president of odonnell and associates. He has worked with mitt romney in 2012, george w. Bush in 2004. A very accomplished guy when it comes to debates and studying up on the candidates. Brett, lets take a look here. Were mapping out what we can expect from these two candidates. Let me ask you a big picture question about donald trump, because we know, obviously, he won the republican nomination, so there is a tendency to look back ask say, well, if he won the nomination, he must have won the debates. I could see an argument, though, that donald trump won the nomination in spite of the debate performance. How do you look at his primary season debate performance . I look at it with a lot of highs and a lot of lows. There were certainly times when trump was very good, particularly in the exchange with ted cruz over the new york values. That was a moment that was very good for donald trump. But he had a lot of lows as well, and there were places in the debates where he just faded into the background. He wont be able to do that in these president ial debates. Hell have to be ready for 90 minutes of discussion on policy issues. So thats the challenge before him. But, you know, he was also very effective at branding the candidates and he was effective at attacking them, getting them to play on his ground, and then finishing them off when they did. You mentioned attacking the other candidates. I think he had fun with jeb bush there in a way he didnt with any other candidate. Let me play a sample. Everybody will remember this. This was trump versus jeb bush on the debate stage. The simple fact is, if you think this is tough and youre not being treated fairly, imagine what its going to be like dealing with putin or dealing with president xi, or dealing with the islamic terrorism that exists. This is a tough business. I know, youre a tough guy, jeb. We need to have a leader thats tough. Youre never going to be president of the United States by insulting your way to the presidency. Im at 43, youre at 23, so so far im doing better. Brett, the taunting there, youre a real tough guy, jeb. It seemed to work in that setting, but against Hillary Clinton, can donald trump do that same sort of thing . He has to walk the line between aggression and offensiveness. People judge the winners of debates based on who is the most aggressive. I mean, i think thats why donald trump makes the claim that he won all the debates, because he was the most aggressive. The question mark is how far can he go, and he cannot cross that line over into being offensive, particularly when hes debating Hillary Clinton. I think that people will Pay Attention to how he talks to secretary clinton given that she is a woman. So i think that he had moments where he was able to restrain that aggression in a way that was effective for him. There were also moments where he did cross the line. Im wondering, too, from the clinton standpoint, if you were coaching them you talked a minute ago about 90 minutes, no commercials, one on one. Grasp of policy is very important. If youre the Clinton Campaign, is your strategy going into this just to try to dazzle everybody with power and knowledge against trump, or are you going into this thinking i can lay some traps here to bait trump into that line. I think she has to do both. I think she has a great challenge. The first challenge is not looking like al gore in 2000. Al gore came into the 2000 debates being the sitting Vice President , he had tremendous experience in government, but he never really found his debate voice. He was three different people in three different debates and that confused the public and also was distracting from the arguments that he made. So shes got to find her voice and shes got to find her message. Thats one big challenge for her. But with trump, the big challenge is how to handle him. Do you just stay on your message and try to deflect when he attacks you, or do you try to bait him . I think thats a big calculation for her because she has to also be careful not to cross the line in being too aggressive. Gender communication rules unfortunately tell us when men are aggressive theyre perceived very positively. When women are overaggressive, they are perceived negatively, and she has had a problem with that in the past. It led to the comment from barack obama in 2008 that she was likeable enough. I think she still has a challenge in terms of finding her voice for the debates. I wonder, too, you mentioned 2000. My recollection of that is the Bush Campaign succeeded in advance of that debate of lowering the bar so his performance in the reviews afterwards maybe got better reviews than it otherwise would. Is that at work here, too, where the bar is lower for trump than it is for clinton, fair or not . Absolutely it is. She has been a sitting senator, been the secretary of state. The bar for her in terms of her policy knowledge and what shell have to defend is much higher. And then on top of that, i dont think the Clinton Campaign has done a particularly effective job at trying to lower expectations. You just reported that shes stuck away at home preparing for the debate, studying and practicing, and you just showed pictures of donald trump out eating cheesesteaks. Certainly the bar, because of the perception, is going to be a little lower for mr. Trump than it is for secretary clinton. Brett odonnell joining us from d. C. Thanks for the time. Appreciate it. Now to the investigation into the bombings in new york and new jersey. The wife of rahami, the suspect, is back in the states now after being in dubai. Now theyre learning that he was more seriously wounded in the shootout with police that led to the arrest than was first disclosed. Were with pete williams. Pete, this shootout was maybe more serious than we heard originally. Right. We knew he had been shot in the shoulder, the arm and the leg. We since learned he was shot 11 times and one of those rounds in the torso came near a vital organ. Hes had several rounds of surgery. Hes sedated right now. Hes not in any mood to talk. Hes not in any condition to talk, i should say, so it will be a while before the fbi is able to interview him if, indeed, he agrees to answer questions. Certainly a while before hell appear in court. As to what the motive is, thats something the government is studying here, and one of the questions theyre looking at is did he turn to this bombing youre looking at surveillance of the two men who got to the suitcase. Well get to that point in just a second here, steve. But as for his motive. One of the things the government is trying to figure out is, did he turn to the bombing idea after failing to get overseas to join some terror group, either isis or the taliban, and they dont know the answer to that. They wonder about it, though, because of his travel patterns overseas and apparent effort to get to turkey, was that an attempt to get to syria, and some things that were in his notebook about efforts by him being blocked. They dont know the answers but theyre looking into it. Pete williams, thank you for that. This saturday afternoon you can tune in to msnbc for the Global Citizen festival. Were looking at that dramatic overhead video that basically showed mr. Crutcher to appear to completely comply with that request with his hands over his head. That is what we believe to be the key evidence here. Oklahoma has a firstdegree manslaughter law, steve, that basically says it can be manslaughter if while youre dealing with a suspect or someone who was potentially committing a crime and you unnecessarily use lethal force. This is not a murder charge. This does not mean the d. A. Thinks this officer meant to kill or had a premeditated desire to kill, but its a serious charge of a serious failure on the part of the officer here, betty shelby, who you see up on the screen, it is a charge and allegation that she misused force with a result of death. That would be firstdegree manslaughter. Thats what theyre going for. Do we have any sense of what the difference would be in terms of a sentence for manslaughter versus murder . Very big difference in the sense that murder would carry a much higher penalty. But as you know from covering this and as many viewers have heard in the coverage of these policeinvolved incidents, it is very rare to see criminal charges for use of force by officers, and i will tell you its exceedingly rare to happen this swiftly. When it does happen, its usually an investigation even with video that would take weeks or months. Theres been tremendous public pressure here. Theres more than one incident getting a lot of national attention. I can tell you this is unusually fast. Chief correspondent ari melber, thanks for the time. That was donald trump in pittsburgh earlier today commenting on what weve seen in charlotte, North Carolina this week. Also in tulsa. All of this coming as trump continues his outreach for africanamerican voters and also just one day after calling for a nationwide stop and frisk program. We talked about that earlier. Lets bring in our panel, National Political reporter for bloomberg politics, and mike pesca, host of the gist podcast. Lets talk about what donald trump is trying to do here. I think its kind of interesting because his message to date has been very, very sort of clearly oneside odd this. He says the cops are the victims. Thats basically been the message. But when this incident in tulsa came to light, this is what donald trump sounded like. Take a look. I watched the shooting in particular in tulsa. And that man was hands up. That man went to the car, hands up. Put his hand on the car i mean, to me it looked like he did everything he was supposed to do. Now, of course, Donald Trumps hard line stance on these issues had won him an endorsement from the fraternal order of police. Thats a group of over 300,000 officers nationally, but in the wake of that, the executive director of that group took issue with what trump said. He said, we would ask that in this case, as in the case of any policeinvolved shooting, people reserve judgment until a full investigation has been completed and the findings evaluated. Donald trump was going for the procop vote and now trying to go for something else, maybe . The problem with trump and getting the endorsement from the police union well, the good thing is theyre police, but the bad thing for him is that theyre union. Unions have to protect their men, and when this happens, it puts them in a bad position. Also, hes really driven by his gut and the visual. When he sees the Video Evidence of the guy with his hand up, he reacts to it with his gut. For him thats his instinct, thats what drives him. He says what he thinks and its disco discordant and doesnt make sense, but thats where we are. It puts in context the poll numbers. We have the new poll numbers out this week showing Hillary Clinton reasserting a lead nationally. We know all the problems donald trump has with white voters, with brown voters, with white voters in the suburbs. Anything youre hearing from him this week youre thinking is helping, is addressing those problems he has. Well, trump is running as the most avowed law and order candidate, i think, since nixon. This is part of his slogan, make America Great again. Every now and then hes certainly capable of saying things like that that strike a very measured and even keel tone, but when he goes off the cuff, he invariably ends up playing to stereotypes in the africanamerican community, kind of playing them as crimeridden, imp Impoverished Community that cant hold jobs. He said theyre in the worse case ever, except for jim crow and housing and employment, yeah. Hes at 7 in a new nbc poll you just talked about, steve, so i dont see him doing particularly well with africanamericans. What i do see as part of this outreach is him potentially reaching collegeeducated suburban white voters who tend to vote republican but who worry he may have racist or bigoted views. This kind of rhetoric, that hes doing at least rhetorically, could reach some, but i doubt it. I dont know how much it will reassure white people. I think white people, the kind who will vote for trump harken to mike pences message that we talk about race too much. Now its an issue thats thrust itself on the stage. Its probably a bad issue for trump because it contradicts itself. You cant say we need to do policing and we need to do stop and frisk. Those two are contradictory. They dont put trump in a good light. Its a bunch of phrases and ideas that dont match up. We should also say, steve i have to cut you off there, im sorry. I wouldnt normally do this but were juggling breaking news here, so for now, i have to say thanks for that, and we will get you guys back, but we have to get back to the breaking news we were telling you about out of tulsa, oklahoma. Thats where prosecutors have just filed firstdegree manslaughter charges against the white female Police Officer who fatally shot a black man. Joining me on the phone is jack henderson. Hes a councilman in the city of tulsa. Councilm councilman, thank you for taking a few minutes. We were just hearing from ari melber, a legal reporter here. He said this was awfully fast to go from an incident earlier this week to these charges being filed. Do you agree with that, and what do you think brought it about so quickly . I think the public here in tulsa, as well as around the country, wanted to see something happen, and they wanted to see it happen fast. The city of tulsa has some history, interesting history, that we all are aware of, but this is one of the cities that weve had incidents like this, but we havent had the riots and the burning and looting and stealing and things, because i think this city is ready to see if justice is really going to happen. And i think that they believe, because of the openness of the Tulsa Police Department with the coming forward of the tape, the information, showing it to the family, the Community Leaders and then opening it to the world to let them see what actually happened, and now those charges have been brought up, and im sure that i think i heard that an arrest is going to be made. Now its healing time for tulsa, as it was when we had another incident where three black individuals were actually five. Three died and the other two were injured. But the same kind of thing happened and this community stayed calm and got to the system, and the people were placed in jail. A calmness came over the city. I just think that we are in a position here in tulsa that a lot of cities are not in because we have seen some things happen in the past that we dont want to see happen again. A contrast between the reaction weve seen in tulsa, obviously, and what weve been seeing in charlotte the last few nights. Jack henderson, councilman in oklahoma, we appreciate the time. Charges being filed against the officer in tulsa. That will do it for this hour. Mtp daily starts right now. If its thursday, Police Shootings in tulsa and charlotte collide head on with the president ial campaign. Tonight donald trump embraces stop and frisk while calling for racial unity. How can we lead when we cant even control our own cities . Plus, how Trumps Campaign is responding to questions about his foundation spending. And new numbers show Hillary Clinton is inspiring new hope than president obama with one new group of important voters. This is mtp daily and it starts right
