Did he say he supported john kerry. Im a democrat. Did he say sort of seemed a little embarrassed. Heres the things about him. Elise, bless his heart. Bless his heart. Real southerners like us and not yankees like him that go to oxford, i mean not ole miss. Oh, no. Exactly. Did he not go to the real oxford, mississippi. Thats right. He went to the one overseas, like sir john where they i dont know did you think had he tea at 4 00 . I went to two Southern State schools, you know, so i didnt even know what he was talking about there. Do people at oxford like him really drink goat milk . Like i dont understand this. With scones. With scones. What did he do when sir john kennedy of oxford had tea at 4 00 every afternoon . What type of scone support do you think he had. Do you think he wear the robes . You know he did. He cleans up very well. He looked very again, this is just 2004. I mean, willie and i, so we were out of turkish prisons. Shoved out by 2004. Ineligible to vote. Ineligible to vote but we were just out and we came back to the United States and we said, who is this fine young upright, educated, avocado toast, goat milk sipping, educated oxford man . It was sir john kennedy. How did he use his platform as an oxford man. Im a democrat. I support senator kerry. I have endorsed senator kerry. Wow, that seems very different from the other one. I can see that again . Because i dont i dont understand, willie. You know what . Its early in the morning and i got to tell you, im disoriented. Where am i on google maps . Just flay one more ti play it one more time and maybe i can piece the two together. Im a democrat. I support senator kerry. I have endorsed senator kerry. So different. Three words, elise, less is hard. You know, hes trying to run away from his past so fast. He thinks if he says nancy pelosi sucks, and he thinks that he can go on and talk this way that i mean, in the south, you know, dont we call those Snake Oil Salesmen . And what does he have against goat milk . If really is from louisiana, doesnt he hang with goats . Wow. [ laughter ] why does he hate goats . You know why . Ill tell you why. Because they dont have goats in oxford, obviously. Id like to Say Something on behalf of Vanderbilt University where i went and senator kennedy went. My meals were lunchables, combos, and mountain dew. I love combos. Every day. I can tell you what my meals were at university of alabama back before it went nation wooiltd. More breakfast i would have dreamland ribs were for lunch i would have dreamland ribs, and for dinner i would have dreamland ribs. And white bread. You have to so it up. I went to dreamland so much that my roommate said he feared that i would get gout and tried to get me to actually eat Something Else. So i went to tus ka looses mcdonalds on fifth street. Thats such a good diet. Along with joe, willie and me we have former aide of the state department elise jordan. David ignatius, donnys here and politics and journalism professor at Morgan State University and politics editor at the root jason johnson. You know who else is here . Who. Last day. What . Oh, know, i dont want to talk about it. Jim. No, so upsetting. Jim is here, this is so upsetting. I dont understand this. I feel like i dont understand this. I feel betrayed by my cbs counterpart. This is horrible. Its not good. Its a big poach and wrong. 20 years. 20 years. Were still in the 11th hour of negotiations. Were going to go right up to the trade deadline and see if we can work something out to keep jenn here because the most valuable member to keep her here. Nora odonnell, taking jenn from us, nora, you know, i dont know. Its just awful. Lets get to the news where it is friday and its fun, but were just hours away from more public testimony in the impeachment probe of President Trump. Today lawmakers will hear from former u. S. Ambassador to ukraine Marie Yovanovitch. She told lawmakers last month that she had been the target of a Smear Campaign by corrupt ukrainian politicians as well as the president s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani and his associates. Yovanovitch also testified last month that u. S. Ambassador to the eu gordon sond lond suggest sondland that she tweet praise of President Trump if she wamted to save her job. You have to tweet something positive about the commander and chief. The smallest people need things like that, its awful. To save your job. You need a tweet. Thats a Foreign Service dedicated servant. Really . A separate closeddoor deposition has been scheduled for later this afternoon. Lawmakers want to hear from state Department Official david holmes. Hes the staffer that ambassador bill taylor referenced in his testimony wednesday as overhearing a phone call where President Trump reportedly asked ambassador sondland about the status of investigations into ukraine. That phone call was a, David Ignatius, that was a showstopper. I didnt see that coming. In the anales of insect, thats g insecurity, thats got to be one of them. The president is talking so loud over the cell phone that people could hear him. But what about igor and ivan at the next trouble, its just extraordinary that this happened. Among other things it just shows such a loose white house operation. Yeah. I dont know whether well hear publicly from holmes who overheard the conversation. Then theres said to be a second person, so loud was this conversation the second person also may have heard it. First of all, donald speaks very loudly. Second so they say. So they say. Secondly, there is, of course, the funny reality that sondland would want everybody to know that he was speaking to the president. Look at this. Inner circle approximately and now t now the president says i didnt even know the guy. Little did he know it would end up with him testifying before congress. David, an argument that republicans have been making that is such a calloused argument callous argument, theyre saying it doesnt matter. Yes, aid was delayed. Yes, it took them a while to get the aid. But no harm no foul. But you actually say that delay actually caused the death of ukrainians. So i dont know that id say it caused the death, its hard to do cause and effect. But the thing that people should understand is that there was a war going on on the Eastern Front of ukraine. There were russian had backed forces. They were counting on this aid, it was a sign of our commitment to support them. In this period where the president held it up arbitrarily waiting for some political statement from ukraine to, in effect, support his campaign, people at the front, dying. There are daily reports from the european monitors. And you can just read the people who died day after day in this period, july, august, september. The people who might not have died had that aid have been there . Right. We cant its hard to say, but what we do know is that the president was completely oblivious. Right. To the reality of this war going on. Didnt care. Didnt care. Wasnt an issue for him. And what you can say, willie, is people were dying im not sure why you cant say it. Well you can say it. People were dying while the president was holding up aid that would have maybe kept them alive. To a democratic alwhy w a scheme for putin and he wasnt going to give relief to the ukrainian people who were being killed business these russian insurgents until he got dirt on joe biden. And that explains the desperation of president zelensky in all these phone calls, sure, ill go on cnn and announce these investigations, we need the money, its life and death. And i think whats interesting too, today in ambassador yovanovitch we will see another career diplomat, somebody who was first put in by george w. Bush and they she was appointed to her post in ukraine by president obama, worked under democrats and republicans, somebody whos just there doing a job, somebody whos not the member of the deep state, somebody whos not a never trumper as shes been accused of, who was completely smeared and told in april at 1 00 in the morning ukraine time to get on a plane and get home because of her personal security with no explanation for what that meant. I just cant imagine being posted in a hardship post. Granted its not a war well, i mean, kiev is not a war zone, but its not paris. Its not far away and they did get to kiev. And to get a call from your own people being like, youre not safe because of the commander and chief. Thats chilling. And im so glad today that ambassador yovanovitch is getting to defend herself. Thank god. After all of these smears. And she gets to go forward and tell her truth in the way that a diplomat speaks. And that was what i felt was so compelling about ambassador taylor and george kent, because they did. They stuck to the facts, they didnt give opinion, they refused to give opinion, and that was what was so powerful about their testimony. David. So, elise, we should listen carefully when ambassador yovanovitch today speaks, because she wanted help so badly. She was being literally hounded out of her embassy by this campaign of wise against her. She asked her boss, secretary of state, for help repeatedly. Turned to him, i need a statement of support, cant you please refute this . Cant somebody do something . There was complete silence from the top. It rollie doeally does sound to a general who was getting pleas from one of his subordinates and was just ignored. You know, again, its important to remind republicans that were talking about criminal behavior. Were talking about extortion, bribery. Heres House Speaker nancy pelosi speaking yesterday. The devastating testimony corroborated evidence of bribery uncovered in the inquiry and that the president abused power and violated his oath by threat evening to withhold military aid in a white house meeting in exchange for an investigation into his political rival. Quid pro quo, bribery. Bribery. And that is in the constitution attached to the impeachment proceeding. So what was the bribe here . The bribe is to grant or withhold military assistance in return for a Public Statement of a fake investigation into the elections. I mean, briberys pretty easy. Im going to give you this money and you change what youre doing as a leader of your country in exchange. Thats what Donald Trumps doing here. Hes bribing them with a military whats interesting is congress has already passed this. He still is holding it up because he doesnt believe the constitution holds any checks and balances for him. So you can call it bribery, arms for dirt, political dirt, you can call tay lot of things. But quid pro quo really does sort of undersell it, doesnt. There are a few names here, congressman from ohio, representative buzz lukens, william jefferson, a former illinois governor, all in jail for bribery. For briber. I its a crime, its that simple. And it was no different, the govern nor the illinois, basically he had a seat for sale and he said, what are you going to pay me for this seat . And by the way, it actually never happened but he still went to jail. Exactly. So the republicans argument well we eventually but you know what, willie, i dont think we can let anybody talk badly about blago. They came after him for healthcare. But thank you, nancy pelosi, because this is something the average person can understand. Its a bribe. And thats a crime. People go to jail for it. So regardless of whether its in the constitution, in our basic criminal system, a bribe is a criminal activity that you go to prison for. Right. Now, this was a simple bribe. As to your point, he could have easily said, okay, unless you give me 10 million im not giving you the aid, he was asking for something more valuable. He was asking to win the next election. Get me dirt on the guy that i feel most vulnerable against. So we have a president who tried to bribe. Thats something at a Kitchen Table i can understand. But the thing is, jason, this is nothing new. Like, everybody thats ever served in congress, everybody thats ever served in washington, d. C. , everybody that has ever had an aide sit down with them say, joe, you need look over these fec rules, right . Dump has already committed a felony, he actually if i would have paid somebody off a week before any of my four conkbretico Congressional Elections to keep them quiet and not report them, id be in jail. Joe, thats the reason that this actually works. Thats the reason that republicans are particularly concerned right now. The reason that this current impeachment hearing works is because we already know donald trump. Because we know this is how he operates. Because just a couple weeks ago the reports out of politico that he had members of the senate at the white house basically saying, hey look, i wont fund raise for you in 2020 if you dont make sure that you vote for me to not be removed from office. All of this is in line with all the man advertised himself on television for 12 years where he said all he does is cut deals. But i want to say this because this is the critical thing here for everybody sitting at home and paying attention. I was surprised all around washington, d. C. Area, barber, den activity, people are paying attention to this issue. Unless the republicans can find an alternative explanation for this behavior, they have no chance of changing the narrative for these hearings. Its so obvious what the president has done. Its so obvious he has disturbed the lives and careers so many civil servants, they cant change that narrative. And screaming at people like jim jordan did is not going to change anything. Wow, hes so obvious. What would strauss say . Thats strauss. The defenses getting more pathetic by the day. They really are. What weve seen from the cable news side of it anyway is that bill taylor and george kent were, quote, nerds. That theyre pencilneck geeks. Bill tail bill who said that . Its on other networks. Did you see on lou dobbs he had those two lawyers . Yes. Blame the jews. Its a jewish conspiracy. Its george sorres. Thats what theyre saying. It was that he had a small neck. He gave the circumference, it was 10 inches. But the point being hes obsessed with size. The on seabsurd di absurdity nowhere to go. They were clear they were there to help them along in present the facts and tell people what they saw and heard. You go through all of it, though, this is what i dont understand, mika, is that yeah, that then were going to break. Yeah, and i dont understand so much. Real quick. So lets say this is a hot stove. Well call this the hearsay stove. Okay. Okay. Bzzz i put my hand on it, its burned. Not going to do that again. Not going to do that again because i found out, i said hearsay and then the next couple of days they actually filled in the facts with people who were there, right . Republicans are doing it again on this phone call. Oh, its second, third, fourth hand ahhh its going to happen to them again because there are people who are tifg o testifying to that. Not only that, don no, i, there are people at onb going i can would you like me to talk . Hey, donald, donald its so bad. Donald, everybodys going to talk, right . And all of these lies and im sure sir john learned this studying the new testament at oxford sipping his latte in his paisley smoking jacket. Dont knock paisley smoking jacket. Everything thats whispered will be shouted from the mountain tops. Its all getting shouted from the mountain tops. People are testifying because they know what the president did was corrupt. They know it was bribery. They knew it was arms for political dirt. They know it is a crime. And they, like sondland, dont want to spend their time in jail like man for tafort or your fri Michael Cohen. I mentioned last week on the joe with michael last week and hes sitting there going to wait a second, why am i the guy sitting here in jail . I do something at the direction of on behest of by the way, the lesson he learned, he did lie to congress and that added on to his sentence. So a lot of people have seen if they went to visit Michael Cohen you think sondland is going to lie to congress . I do not think so. I do not think so. How big is a jail cell that sondland would be in . Tell me about Michael Cohens jail cell. Well, hes in a barracks. So its not that bad. Maybe sondland will lie to protect donald trump, because we know donald trump would lie to protect sondland and go to jail for him. Maybe sondland will take the hit. Im going to give them the number, its hundred800otisville and none of these people are going to tell anything but the truth. The dllie he told was at the direction of jay sekulow. Im going to take you to break. But he told you to lie . Yep. Mika, really quickly before we go to break i want to talk about baseball for a second. Okay. Listen, i like the astros. Were going here. And i like the astros coaches. Like ive had a because we go to spring training and theyre really good guys. But, man, the astros now, ive heard ive had my friends richard labounty, Best High School coach in florida, told me a couple years ago, coach, the astros cheat. They cheat. And he just talked about they steal signs and things. Have you seen those video tapes . Yeah. Oh my god. What happens i didnt see the videos. What happens is they steal a sign. They steal signs and they bang. So if its a fastball, nothing. But if its a slider you hear two bangs. If its a changeup, one. And you can you can watch games all throughout the year and theyre stealing signs. Its a camera in the outfield. They steal the sign and its as quick as somebody in the dugout hits it once or twice to tell the batter which pitch is coming. I love those guys, i love the team, they are just so dont need to do that. Seems like good guys but that is just dirt. Im going to play it and, listen, i dont want to be a part of that. There was a player who left the team who outed them who told the story of what they were going. I think the only way go is vacate the 2008 world series. And give it to the red sox. And lets replay the world series, yankees get the 28th you know whats worse than that . I dont know anybody worse than if you cheat at golf. Thats even lower. If you want to really go to the bottom, i dont know anybody that cheats at golf. Course im not a big golfer, but that would be the real tell. Rileys book on the president. Oh, really . Coming up, we are going to be talking about doral bedbugs. Hold a second. And im serious. I want to be careful here. Don junior did not buy the books in bulk, the rnc bought the books in bulk and there is a big difference because if its don junior, he has his right do it like im sure a lot of rich people do that. I never did because none of my books ever sell. But, if the rnc did it, then what that means is probably at the instructions of the president , they used people who had given them 25, 50, a lot of trumps working class supporters to help get republicans elected, they used it as a vanity project for don junior. Sounds like a foundation. Thats even worse. Sounds like the trump found zblati dation. You dont think thats a standard for thats not always the standard for the best selling loose. You dont thinkon yun juro d writing is a tour deforce. This smells a lot like jim wrights scandal where people brought his books. Yeah. So have him come speak. Its bad. All right. Well have that still ahead on morning joe. Not bad. Former governor Deval Patrick joins the conversation on his first full day as the president ial candidate. Plus, newly revealed email showed exactly who Stephen Miller is. And what he believes. A look at the president ial advisers White Nationalist theories straight ahead. We are complicit in these deaths if we fail to act. As i speak, on the floor right now there is a School Shooting in santa clara, california. How can we turn the other way . How can we refuse to see that shooting in realtime, demanding our attention, requiring our action . We are complicit if we fail to act. It is not just a political responsibility, it is a moral imperative. And the unconscionable loss of life is our responsibility. Democratic senator from connecticut Richard Blumenthal was on the senate floor yesterday when that shooting went down. Pushing for universal background checks when an aide went in to let him know of the School Shooting. It has become a sad reality for our children and a fear. Ive always said that we feared, you know, nuclear, you know, a Nuclear Attack from the soviet union and we were told what drills to do and where to run and fallout shelters when we were growing up. Now our kids go to school afraid that somebodys going to bring an ar15 to school they drill for it. They practice for it. The teachers are trained. You cant solve a problem like this. It has a breakdown in the political system. This weekly carnage that shocks everyone, that blume men that will blumenthal, thats a great description of this. Whats happening . Theres nothing worse than a school sohooting. I was in a jewish synagogue, heres what do in case of a shooting. Its so sobering that wherever you go thats become part of our builtin fabric. The other thing, this School Shooting, im going to say this the wrong way, there was only two, so it didnt take on the mass media attention. Thats how decent advertisesens it wasnt a 20person killing. I dont know how we got here. The thing have willie, its fascinating that conservatives who have long pushed back on hate crimes because they say all murders are equal. Right. You shouldnt categorize murders, they do it every day. Every time American Students get shot by american terrorists, we cant do anything about it. If this shooting yesterday. Two muslims. If it had been a muslim that had shot two american kids, washington would be shut down today. Remember San Bernardino . Remember, washington got shut down. But, jason, if its if its this random domestic terrorism with kids being able to walk into gun stores and get ar15s and shoot up their schools, not necessarily this school, i dont know what weapons were used here, but a majority of the school as this epidemic spreads across america, republicans say absolutely nothing. If one muslim kills one or two americans and, you know, says akba or allah, washington shuts down. They actually are prioritizing death. Some deaths are more disturbing than others. But when its just our kids getting shot in school, unless a muslim did it, they just dont do anything. Yeah, joe. And heres the thing. I was at the rally for the parkland kid last year. I also want to talk about not just the sort of terror in the classroom. I can tell you the terror of people in the classroom, the teachers. Im faculty. Ive gone through active shooter training. I know the fear of hearing a bang outside. I know the concerns that students have. What would happen if someone came down the hallway, dr. Johnson . Do you have to guard the door . Which way to do we go . Here or there . The idea that were sending our children into places that they can consider to be combat zones every day are a problem. Look, unfortunately its bad enough that the republicans only seem to care if the shooter is black or brown or Something Else like that. But i recognize that the Republican Party as a whole, and unfortunately some conservative democrats, didnt even care about the colors of the victims. If white children in sandy hook could be murdered in mass and yet members of congress throw up their hands, then they clearly do not care about anything in this country. They are nor love with their guns than they are in different kinds of children in this country and what color they are. Thats the most disgusting thing of the epidemic violence weve seen in the inner city, suburbs, and everywhere else in this country in the last 20 years. One of the surviving kids in the high school at Santa Clarita grabbed me and said effectively i knew this day was coming. Thats the mentality of kids going to school, okay, its our turn, its our time to be the ones on tv to have the name of our school and town add to the list. What senator blumenthal was talking about there was taking up hr8, a measure that passed through the house on party lines effectively for federal universal background checks. Mitch mcconnell will not take up the bill. Weve said it how many times on this show, a million times that universal background checks have 92 approval in this country, including among republicans, including among gun owners, and its including among nra members. Nra members and its the small group of nra leadership thats pushing people in congress to not take up the bill like Mitch Mcconnell. We should say that Giffords Law Center in california where the shooting took place have the toughest laws in the country. They do hava a ban on assault weapons and background checks. But the fact that Mitch Mcconnell wont take up this bill and get it to a vote tells you everything you need to know about where the pressure is coming from in washington. It has surprised me in focus groups in mississippi and tennessee hearing from gun owners how, sure, theyre fine with increased background checks. It is fundamentally insane that it is harder to get a license to drive a car or to get certain prescription drugs than it is to get a you know, its so much easier just to go and buy an ar15, especially if states where persontoperson transfer is legal and theres no paper trail. I didnt understand why the Republican Leadership is still cowering to the nra when the nra as an organization is as weak as theyve ever been. And so i just dont understand the fear. Joe, who made Mitch Mcconnell god that he gets to decide what we vote on and what we dont . Who gave him that title . I missed the news flash that he gets to play god. We say this matter of factually, he wont bring it to the floor, something that 90 of americans want. And who the hell is he . His Republican Caucus, its up to his Republican Caucus to put pressure on him and its up to him to say listen heres the crazy thing. Who was it . I think it was james fellows who said this all along during the last session, that it only took two republican senators to stand up and say were going to vote with the democrats on these issues where Donald Trumps being corrupt. Just two. Thats when jeff flake was there making speeches, but never ryan burr. And we could go down the list of everybody else. But its, again, its the republicans. How many, you know, republicans have what . Majority right now of three . I think three. Three. You know, we just need three republican senators who actually care enough about these shootings to say, you know what were going to do . Were going to team up with the democrats and were going to be the majority of us that are going to push Mitch Mcconnell to do this. And, you know, thats all it takes. It needs to happen. Coming up, President Trump is no longer banking on the g7 summit coming to his miami resort, but the Republican National committee has no problem with bedbugs. Theyre going to hold one at the parts most lucrative events there. That story and much more ahead on morning joe. You get them and you just start scratching. I cant stand it. And now the republicans are going throb. T. And now the republicans are going throb. Throb. Throb. Beth. This holiday, start the journey with a dna kit from ancestry. This holiday, start the journey with a dna kit i thought i was managing my moderate to severe Crohns Disease. Then i realized something was missing. Me. My symptoms were keeping me from being there. So, i talked to my doctor and learned humira is for people who still have symptoms of Crohns Disease after trying other medications. And the majority of people on humira saw significant symptom relief and many achieved remission in as little as 4 weeks. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. I am pleased to endorse donald trump for the presidency of the United States. He was on the campaign. You know, the only reason i gave him the job because i felt loyalty. You know, out of the 100 United States senators, i was the very first one to stand with donald trump. Even my enemies say that Jeff Sessions should have told you while others were hiding under their desk, i went to work. Im disappointed in the attorney general for numerous reasons. I knew he was the one to make America Great again. He made what i considered to be a very terrible mistake for the country. And ill keep fighting for President Trump and his agenda. The attorney general says im going to recuse myself. Im Jeff Sessions, i approve this ad. I said what kind of a man is this . Soul crushing. Mika, soul crushing. Thats Jeff Sessions new campaign ad praising the person who questioned his manhood. I can just say let me ask i got to keep asking this question. Because i just dont get it . Why . What who would put their manhood in a blind trust, willie, for donald trump . What is worth that . Whats worth that . Seriously. I mean, you cannot what is worth that . By the way, those were some of the nicest things that donald trump said about Jeff Sessions. Read Bob Woodwards book, dumb southerner in, there southerner in, theres another word i wont put out there. He has complete disdain. Hes said it time and again. Donny and i talk about this all the time. Whats the thing where youre able because you need a job so desperately to surrender your soul to donald trump. Cant you get some job working in a law firm . As Claire Mccaskill says, guys, its pretty good out here. No job is worth that. Donny, lets take the case of ted cruz. Donald trump planted the story that he cheated on his wife five times, plants that in the national enquirer. And then says in the same publication that his father killed jfk. And then tweets out that ted cruz wife is ugly. Can you imagine . No, i can not imagine because i no, no, because my life, my entire existence would be nothing more get him. Than to destroy the political career of this man. I would stay away 20 four hours a day, seven days a week. I would reduce his political bones to dust. And yet ted cruz and Jeff Sessions and all of these republicans, they sell their soul to a man that degrades them every day and insults their wives. They sell their manhood also. I know thats not a politically correct term to use, but its how do you face yourself, how do you face your wife . How do you face your kids . Theres a word, i dont know if its an official word, puts. I think thats an im a baptist, i dont know. And we bring this up on the show all the time, how do you explain i dont understand the psychological mechanism that people can be so small and so sniveling and so pathetic and not have a core, a basic human core that when youre punched in the face, when youre insulted, when youre slapped lets ask a political scientist. Help us understand. When gabe was considered the most powerful guy in washington after he became speaker of the house in the landslide. I had 74 men and women with me that if he stepped out of line, they knocked him down that day. Bill clinton would defend his wife. Barack obama would defend his wife. And we can we can all say different kinds of mistakes that bill clintons made. But at the end of the day, its not that theyre craven. Its that they never had a soul to begin with. They were never running on anything. They never had any integrity to begin with. So theres nothing to give up if you didnt have a stoul oul to with. I can also add marco rubio to that list. Theres a whole slew of republicans that donald trump just marched through like he was on a Reality Tv Show that have no problem with the way that he degraded them and theyre kissing his butt now that theyre in office. Think about what morniarco s about donald trump, he was a con man. Think about what Lindsey Graham said until he got power. Then the second he got power, suddenly he was unassailable. Thats the thing. When youre talking about from a science standpoint, its people who never had any grounding. All they cared about was access to power. Jeff session clrs s, i would jue posters of Donald Trumps tweets of Jeff Sessions, we put them in every church and Grocery Store and say this man has noing iing at the gritty. Hes not going to be able to stand up for donald trump because donald trump doesnt trust him. Thats unfortunately what has happened to way too many republicans. The republicans used to be able to fight against the president s. Democrats are always willing to fight against their president s. I dont know what donald trump has, but i know what a lot of republicans dont have ar and thats a spine. On some level, all these guys want to be donald trump. All the heinous things that we demented. That we look at and so loath i can correct you there . They hate him but they but they listen, youve got to trust me. Behind the scenes i know that. They hate him. But what theyre jealous of is trumps akt to nbility to no you see that sniveling Jeff Sessions and on some level i think youre projecting, buddy, because elise, everybody republican ive spoken with behind the scenes they just shake their head. Theyre like, god, they literally they want it to end. They are counting the days. They want it to end. Until donald trump leaves office. If they could turn off all the lights in the senate when they voted to convict, they could would all vote to convict him and have mike pence as president in a second. They know hes a moron. They know hes corrupt. They know that his behavior is just a classic scum bag. And yet they just take it. Elise, elise is just kind of dont hold back. Bouncing around i like to have scum bag and puts in the same show. Elise, would you like to clarify or you think hes a bully. He is a bully. Hes a bully. I think its almost like were making too much of his behavior. Its just like a mean, mean kid who is just bullying everyone around him. And until one kid is brave enough to step up and get into that fight and take him down and destroy the high arc i can, i s hierarchy, its going to continue. Tits like the mean girl. I think we should have a series called fridays with elise. Because it was a flay she said rudy needed to go to hospice. Thats right. Fridays with elise. I think that would be a book id read. So as monty python would say, now for something completely different. Joining us now, morning joe medical contributor dr. Dave campbell as vapingrelated illnesses continue to rise, were finally getting answers on the cause. So give us the answer, i guess, first of all. The short answer is its a vitamin e acetate. The big answer, mika, is that we have two developing Public Health crises that we might talk about right now in the midst of what your panel is talking about with the impeachment and what the syrian kurds are dealing with with ethnic cleansing. We have the antibiotic resistant drug, antibiotic organisms that are spreading. The cdc came out yesterday and told us about that. And theyve now found the probably the cause for the lung injury that happens when using ecigarettes and when vape products, particularly those that contain thc or cannabis products. So dr. Dave just kind of pull back a little bit. How are we here again in this situation where we have people inhaling something that theyre buying that is obviously bad for them . Im sorry, im horrified, especially as a mother. I have to say, breathing is hard enough. [ laughter ] im serious. All the kids that i know among they vape. You know, this is all over again, how have we gotten here . I can explain it, i think. And it is a balance between with antibiotic resistant germs, the cdc says no one can always prevent becoming infect ant with a antibioticresistant germ. I say everyone can prevent becoming injured by vaping or using Electronic Cigarettes, and the cdc supports that by recommending now that no one uses ecigarettes and no one vapes products containing thc. There we go. Particularly young people and pregnant women. So, dr. Dave, there are a lot of people saying the cdc created a panic around ecigarettes and they help people stop smoking and that these deaths with the vitamin e with as state are from illegal ones that you buy. Is that accurate . So far perhaps, willie. So far they have not found vitamin e acetate in manufactured products that you credit buy at the store properly. Thats true. But the potential to have those products homemade or the potential to have other contaminates that have not been found yet linked to vaping and lung injury is very real. So the cdc in proper precaution is recommending for now that if you want to use something to stop smoking, you use an evidencebased product. There are many. And you hold off on using Electronic Cigarettes and vaping to stop smoking. Horribly dangerous tobacco cigarettes. All right. Thank you so much, dr. Dave. We appreciate it. Thank you. I want to get dr. Dave back because hes talking you about this risk of antibiotic resistant super bugs in the United States. And its serious here, willie. Dont smirk at me. I thought you were going somewhere else. No, im not. Okay. Oh, to prevent stds . No. Heres what you do. This is important, keep your cuts clean. Im serious here, and covered until they heal. Take good care of chronic conditions. Wash your hands. And heres the thing, wash your hands. I mean this. Wash your hands all the time. You shake hands with somebody, you do whatever, wash your hands. And another thing that im not good at but im going to go next week. Yea. Get your flu shot. Yes, you . Not just for you, get your flu shot for everybody. For my mom, everyone. You may still get the flu, but it will cut down on the possibility of an epidemic. Okay. The kids. Im going to take a picture of that. The kids, wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands. Ive had too many too many of my kids just been fighting flu and its just its the simplest, easiest way. A fist bump. Im telling you, ive moved to the fist bump. Well talk. Jason, jonathan, thank you so much. Thank you, jason. Any hygiene tips . Look, Elementary Schools are a germ frappe. Like wash your kids when they come home. Theyve been hugging and touching stuff all day. Hose them down. Coming up, today marks the second round the public impeachment hearings. Were just two hours away from former Ukraine Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch testifying before lawmakers. Im still trying to break through this whole daisy and likened donnedal. I got to say this. I dont know about jayz. Jayz, yes. Wait, what . What happened to jayz . Jayz likes trump. Remember jayz was in 2016 he said this is nothing personal against mr. Trump. Oh, yeah. And youre like wait, what . Well that was 2016. I saw kanye. If you havent seen kanye on lettermans show, have you seen that . Yeah. One of the most remarkable interviews. I never heard somebody talk about Mental Health as much and as explicitly as kanye had. And then talking about the move to the sunday service, which is just extraordinary. And people are going, wait, is kanye doing this because of is this a new gimmick . Go back and listen ton jesus walks in like 2000, 2001. This is who kanye is. But in the middle of that, hes like hes like back like hes a trump guy. Kanye is a trump guy. Yeah. I mean, i guess he is. No, he is. Its hard to follow the kanye. I love kanye west. He is a genius. Hes a musical jean yas and gre genius and great musician of our time. I do think and someone told me this that the whole scene in the white house where hes in the oval Office Wearing the hat was a play to get up close to donald trump to get some criminal justice things done. It turns out that Kim Kardashian west is the most powerful woman in america because she has the hear of President Trump and shes getting people out of prison about once a month. I love kanye west. I dont know how you feel, but i know he has some idiosink contractsies but hes a musical genius. Well, we might debate that. I think hes talented and a great what did you say before he wore the red hat. No, no, no, i enjoyed the first two albums. This last album, lets put it this way, the sophistication of his runs. Yeah. Its diminished. Theyre not very good. What do you have against jesus . I have nothing against jaws jesus. I have something against bad rimes, though. The first five albums is good. We have David Ignatius with us, former aide to the white house and state departments elise jordan. Proffer at Princeton University eddy glaude junior and chief White House Correspondent the New York Times, peter baker. Great to have yaw aou all on bo peter has written a piece about can way west and his rimes. Peter, where are we on imimpeachmei impeachment in . It keeps that its the drip, drip, drip from the state people and people that are overhearing phone conversations the president s having. You know youre going to get firstperson accounts soon. Now people in the onb talking you about they too want to testify. Tell us where you think we are in terms of this first week of the impeachment inquiry and what should we expect in the days and weeks coming from the white house . Yeah, thats a great question. You know, veteran of the clinton impeachment told me once that the longer these things go on, the facts only get worse, never better. They dont get better. Yeah. So you see of course increasing stories and anecdotes and pieces of the puzzle being added to the narrative weve been understanding about what happened to ukraine with the president. Today well hear from Marie Yovanovitch who of course was the ambassador to ukraine pushed out early by, you know, Rudy Giuliani in effect and donald trump jr. And others who were casting her as an enemy of the president. She was called and told in the middle of the night to get on the next plane to come home. Shell be the human face obviously of what was going on, these two different channels, the shadow Foreign Policy versus the regular Foreign Policy. Shell be sort of like a very human example of that. Now, you know, the president has every right to remove an ambassador for any reason, more or less, that he wants. But the point will be that she was perceived to be somebody standing up against the Pressure Campaign on ukraine to provide incriminating information about democrats and, therefore, in effect brings to life that story in a more dramatic way. Whether people are paying attention, whether people are going to change their mind, its early to say. It will be literally the second day of public testimony. Were going to have a whole lot next week. Democrats are hoping to have bills on each other. By the time you hear all of it it begins to weigh down on the president in a way that it took a long time with watergate. The republicans saying nothing to see here and its not clear in anybodys minds are changing on the republicans side. Its only the first week. Watergate was a year. I want to follow up on something peter said. Because i think the republicans are trying to be too clever when theyre talking about theyre going to extend impeachment to try to mess up democrats in the middle of the primary season. First of all, what are they doing . Theyre keeping Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren off the campaign trail. Theyre hurting their boogiemen. Theyre hurting their socialists and helping joe biden, the person they dont want to run against and theyre going to be helping mayor pete, another person that i would suggest if he can find three black voters to support him is also somebody that they dont want to run against. But also following up on what peter says, you want this over if youre donald trump and if youre the republicans, because the longer it goes, the worse it gets. So as we were saying earlier, more people are beginning to speak out. There are cracks in this wall of silence. So we now will have somebody from the onb who will testify about the holdup on military aid to ukraine. And who will be the next one and the next one after that . And i think were getting closer to being able to understand just why was Marie Yovanovitch fired as ambassador . Its been mysterious, why this campaign against her . She thinks it was because she was standing up against the schemes of Rudy Giuliani and his two associates, parnas and fruman. Well hear a lot more about them, and this will look more like, i think, a kind of scandal of corruption. Also, the introduction by Speaker Pelosi of the issue of bribery. Im just going to read the definition of bribery, offering, giving, soliciting or receiving any item of value as a means of influencing the actions of an individual Holding Public office. Thats a definition of what were going to hear about. Right. Happening in the july 25 phone call. Thats it. Think were entering different territory and, as you said, the longer it goes the more these facts come out. Its been hard to watch this entire process, peter baker, especially when they try to defame these people who are standing up and trying to speak the truth and testify under oath. Ambassador taylor seemed to come off as what he appears to be, which is a patriot, a diplomat and someone who cares deeply about doing the right thing and the United States of america. Is there any argument against his credibility . What have the republicans been saying . Well, the argument isnt against his credibility, the argument is against his ability to know what hes talking about. In other words, nobody, for the most part anyway, on the republican side is trying to besmirch his integrity because hes a pretty credible witness. He has given 50 years of his life to the country, vietnam veteran, fifth in his class at west point and all that. So the republicans understand that trying to knock him down on a personal level is probably unwise. But they do say that, look, he didnt know what he was what the president was doing. He never talked to the president , he never met the president. Any conversation had e had was secondhand and its irrelevant to the point of charging a president with high crimes and misdemeanors. Now, the democrats counter by saying, fine, give us the witness whos did talk to the president. That would be john bolton, mic Mick Mulvaney, that would be people who declined to testify at the moment under instruction from the president. The president could change that in a minute. He could say, fine, i want john bolton and Mick Mulvaney to testify. If the republicans and democrats wanted people in the troom give their stories, those would be two people to hear from. I dont think youll hear him to do that. So john dowd called him a. Iful ignorant inub asubordinate about bill taylor . Yeah. Thats a guy that completely lacks character. What is that . Thats a school yard insult. It shows how thin their defense is, that all they can do really is just insult, as we were saying, a west point graduate, a vietnam vet and call him inarticulate, a gossip, just try to make him go away. The American People have eyes, though. They watched bill taylor, they watched george kent refuse to answer questions interpreting whether or not the offenses were impeachable and say im just here to tell you what i saw or heard. The American People dont believe that those two guys are nerds as some people put it on fox news or theyre disloyal or dont love the country or that theyre somehow partisan and deep state. Were at a place where seriously you use nerd . Its unreal. Like what third grader said that . Its pathetic, but its also its desperate is what it is. Theyre attacking the substance of that what these mans and ambassador yovanovitch will say today. So theyre trying desperate attempts to go off their character and integrity. I think people will watch and make up their own minds and determine whether they have the integrity. They saw it for themselves. We have these three polls, right . You have folk on the left who have already made their finds up. You have folks on the right who in some ways have made their minds pup and you have folks in the mid who will called for an impeachment process but didnt call for removal. They wanted to get the facts of the case and they wanted to see what happens. And when we hear these sorts of comments, what we see folk trying to do is muddle the waters and the thinking because they know what the case is, right . I was teaching just recently, the other day, i was teaching this stuff in my class. There was this claim he said when you have somebody exhibit an arrogance, laziness and closed mindedness, you have those combination you have an actively ignorant subject. Theres a sense in what im hearing from the republicans in all of these instances, all of these folks who defend donald trump is that they want to cultivate actively ignorant people because they dont want us to see the facts. They dont want us to deal with the facts. They are actually responding to testimony, straightforward testimony with conspiracy theories passed around on facebook. They have no defense. Which is the root of this whole debacle, Rudy Giuliani chasing conspiracy theories with his tin foil hat on over in ukraine. Yeah. And now were wasting the collective time and energy of not just our country, but pretty much the entire world over our reputation, wow. Some dumb theory that has no accountability whatsoever. And america is for sale is the message. We can be bought, bribed, and we can do the same back. All right. Now get ready for this one. Yesterday the congressional chairs of the progressive black, hispanic and Asian Pacific american caucuses called on white house Senior Adviser Steven Miller to resign after newly uncovered emails show he pushed the website breitbart to cover White Nationalist content to be win 2015 and 2016. In emails leaked to hate watch, a branch of the Southern Law Center a report showed more than 80 of the 900 emails obtained related related to race or immigration. Hate watch characterized miller as being obsessed with white genocide. Miller sent those emails prior to working in the Trump Administration and now plays a direct role in forming its immigration policy. The emails were sent to former breitbart employee katy mccue who was fired from the publication for posting antimuslim tweets in 2017. In the emails, miller suggested she look into White Nationalists websites including is it v dare and the conspiracy website info wars and that breitbart draw from the white supremacist journals which imfa sizes crimes of immigrants and nonwrite people. That she write about the camp saints which is popular among White Nationalists and neonazis. And he shared he was upset amazon removed Confederate Flag merchandise from its site in the wake of the 2015 charleston shooting. The white house denounced the report calling it a far left smear organization and yesterday white house spokesperson gidley told the New York Times, quote, it concerns me as to why so many on left consistently attack jewish members of this administration. So, David Ignatius, its not a report. I mean, these are emails. And emails that were confirmed by the former the conversations were made, confirmed by former breitbart employee that Stephen Miller called and was pushing these White Nationalists articles and trying to get them to put together White Nationalists articles for breitbart. So this is a kind of portrait of Stephen Miller in his what he thought were his private moments and private correspondence. But they confirm what weve seen from Stephen Miller. He, in his role as the president s adviser, and the president are pushing buttons in American Life that are just so dangerous, so divisive. Theyve done that from the moment that trump began his campaign. The rage against immigrants is central to who donald trump has presented himself as. Miller is a particularly, i think, meanspirited example. The fact that he has this president s ear to the extent that he does is scary. Its good for the stuff to come out, again, so people can see it and think about it. But in the end, this is about america. People have to look at this material and decide what they think. Are they comfortable with this . Is this who we are . Yeah, is this who we are . And peter baker there is not a report. These are emails. These are Stephen Millers emails, these are Stephen Millers words, Stephen Millers thoughts, this is stehim pushino have pro White Nationalist articles written on breitbart. The same he Stephen Miller who responded to the paris killings by talking about a Muslim Registry in america. This is the same stephen himmer who miller who responded to San Bernardino, the shoot tlings th, by talk about the muslim ban and donald trump followed him every step of the way. You look at these emails and i dont know how anyone looks at them and not conclude that Stephen Miller is a White Nationalist or a champion of White Nationalism. I ask anybody on the right not on the right, youre not on the right youre a trump supporter. I ask any Trump Supporters who support recordbreaking deficits, recordbreaking debt, tariff taxes, socialist farming schemes, all in the name of a personality called i ask you to sift through the 900 emails and come to the conclusion that hes not a White Nationalist or at least not a champion of White Nationalism. Peter baker, so where do we go from here in the saga of a White Nationalist or at least a champion of White Nationalism inside the white house . Does he stay inside the white house since he has been revealed by his own words as a White Nationalist . Or a champion of White Nationalism . One of the things thats been remarkable about his career is how long its lasted. He has been a real survivor in the reality show that surrounds the president which one after the other cabinet secretaries and Senior Advisers and white house chief of staffs fall by the wayside, Stephen Miller has been the one constant throughout. Hes done it in part by making himself indispensable to the president at key moments on issues that the president cares about. He cares about immigration. He shares Stephen Millers views on these things. Hes made himself closer to Jared Kushner and ivanka trump who were important players in the white house. I dont know that youll see him necessarily pushed out as a result of this, that hes got a lots of, you know, credit in the bank in that white house. And the president s likely to look at this as just an unfair Smear Campaign against him. As you point out, his own words, not somebody elses interpretation of him. The president tends to get his back up on things like this and he doesnt respond to the surround sound in which democrats and certainly even some republicans find this kind of stuff very troubling. Theres so much to despise in this collection of emails. Theres one word Stephen Miller rights in the wake of the shooting in charleston where people were murdered at bible study, he was worried that stores would take Confederate Flags out. That was his concern. In some ways this isnt surprising, because we know that ste Stephen Miller has been the architect of all of these things that were seeing on bans and things at the border, donald trump saw him as a vessel to get their views in the white house and make significant decisions in this country about immigration. Its shocking to read some of these emails, it really is, but in some ways not surprising because hes shown us this is who he is. Banner was running around europe telling folks on the right and the far right, stand proud when they call you these things, right . First a couple things quickly. One, complete silence. Crickets by republicans. What have they said . Theyve said nothing. When theyre champions by White Nationalism or White Nationalist, silence twooens means complicity. The second thing, we knew who steve miller was. I remember calling him a White Nationalist on meet the press and Mick Mulvaney grabbed his pearls, oh my god, right . So we were calling him what he was. And folks didnt really concede the truth of the claim. And even though the facts were the facts were clear. So then the third thing i wanted to mention is even though were we we were calling him a White Nationalist and there was a racist undertone to immigration policy, it was difficult for folk to see the relationship between the bad faith of folks like steve miller and the claims around immigration. So it becomes difficult to in disentangle someone who is deeply and profoundly racist and someone making policies. The last thing is the insult, the absolute horrible nature of the statement from the white house that folks are coming after him because hes jewish. To invoke antisemitism as a way to defend racism is absolutely unacceptable. And i think we need to call it out for what it is. Its all a new level. But he said the power of the president is not to be questioned very early on, steve miller did. How do you work alongside Stephen Miller in the Trump White House . Thats a good question. Now do you do it . I dont know. You are saying im okay with this, i am okay youre accepting it. With working alongside this person who is in a very senior position. I dont want to hear the whole argument, oh, but were the saving the world by being there. You should think about it if youre in that white house. You cant work next to a guy whos a White Nationalist or who champions White Nationalist ideology. You talk about the Republican Party, how low they have sunk. Remember back in 2001 i think it was, trent lott made an offhanded comment about Strom Thurmond that the country would have been better off if had he been elected in 1938. And trent lied for that comment. An offensive comment. But for that comment, even after he apologized repeatedly, the republicans ran trent out of town. He was the majority leader. And for that one comment which he apologized for profusely, he was run out of town. Now, you have a guy that has written all of these emails, its come out and hes promoting White Nationalism. Hes pressuring a news website to run White Nationalists articles. Pressuring them, doing their work for them to champion White Nationalism. And as eddie said, we havent heard from one republican, one. Eddie used a great word, which was complicity. Theres a way in which the guardrails we often say this, the guardrails have come off of American Life. I think part of whats ahead, what i hope is ahead in this next election psych is cycle is attempt to rebuild them for people good faith. I still think americans are generally people of good faith to say thats not acceptable. To look at Stephen Millers behavior, republicans have to stand up for their values and their party. This guy is going to take them over a cliff. And if they if they dont Say Something going to take them over . Well, right. Think were there. But every day we fall a little further. Yeah. But, i mean, thats what i hope is ahead, is attempt to, you know, rebuild those guardrails. Stephen miller, what he wrote is wrong and were going to speak out about it. Your point about trent lott, that was wrong and were going to challenge it, were not the party thats going to live with that. I just hope thats the thing is when david says take them over the cliff, you look at this again. Even if the republicans are completely devoid of morals, completely devoid of even if theyre completely soulless, just for arguments sake. Okay. Theyre not, i know a lot of them, i loike a lot of them, a lot of them are my good friends. But even if theyre completely soulless and theyre like bart simple so and he sold his soul to millhouse, cynically look at the demographic changes that are happening. Texas is not going to go democratic likely in 2020. Ill bet a lot of money that its going to go democratic in 2028. And ill get better than even odds that it goes democratic in 2024. Donald trump is setting these republicans up to be the wigs of the 21st century that right as this demographic change is coming that will fund mentally alter american politics forever, theyre doubling down on segregationist policies. And even if you were soulless, it makes no political sense. You are setting yourself up for a historic collapse. And yet they just keep doing it. As you say that im thinking back to the reince priebus, this is pretrump but it said weve got to make some changes to our party. Weve got to reach out because of these demographic changes or else we are going to become the wigs. Look how far its turned since then. I would point out that Stephen Miller read these emails, and remember this isnt some guy with a radio show somewhere. Hes got the ear of the president. He might i mean, peter can tell us better, but hes if not the, one of the most trusted advisers. Most powerful guy in the white house, fair to say. The guy who wrote those emails, the guy who believes those things, the guy who has instructed all these policies along the border has the ear of the most powerful man in the world in donald trump. You know, peter, we always accuse parties of fighting the last war, generals fight the last war, they always fight the next election. And has history shows you dont have to be really insightful to know that Donald Trumps 60 election was a lark. Even trump said you could have theld in ten days, i would have only won one of those ten times. It is everything lined up perfectly for me on that one day. Donald trumps coalition in 2016 isnt the future. Barack obamas coalition in 2008, the coalition of the ascendent, that is the future of american politics and that is who republicans are separating themselves from radically every day in this Stephen Miller story is a perfect example of that, isnt it . Well, what you hear Republican Leaders talk about all the time, of course, the demographics are not on their side. The trend and changes in American Life are working against them unless they change their approach to reaching out beyond the traditional base. The base that elected donald trump is not going to be enough to sustain them in over the long term. Look at the state of texas. Thats been sort of the white whale for democrats for a long time thinking someday theyre going to turn it blue. I it didnt happen last time, it may or may not happen this time. But some point down the road as these numbers do move in texas, it could turn into a Democratic State the way virginia did, a state that was once very solidly republican. If that happens, where is your Electoral College coalition to get you back to the white house in its impossible without texas to have a republican win the white house. Thats the thing that Republican Leaders looking past of the next election are worried about. But they have donald trump telling them, look, my approach worked, dont mess with success, im going to win again in 2020, and you know, basically hes setting the tone right now for the Republican Party in a way that makes many of them very uncomfortable. All right. Peter baker, thank you so much. And still ahead, a live look inside capitol hill where the impeachment hearing into President Trump kicks off not long from now. And well speak with a member of the house intel committee, congresswoman val demings next on morning joe. Congresswoman val demings next onmorning joe. Make fitnesse with pure protein. High protein. So you can too. That makes many of them very congresswoman val demings next that makes many of them very congresswoman val demings next uncomfortable. On morning joe. Uncomfortable. On morning joe. Mr. Kent, you said that a president has the right to remove an ambassador because the ambassadors serve at the pleasure of the president , is that correct . That is correct, maam. Does that removal usually come with a Smear Campaign of that ambassador by the president. I think the right of the president to make a decision about the president s personal representative as confirmed by the senate is separate from whatever happens outside the confines of u. S. Government processes. You have any idea why it was important to discredit ambassador yovanovitch, what she was not willing do or to do, why that was important . I guess it probably depends on the motivation of other people and i am not one of them. All right. That was member of both the house intelligence and judiciary committees on wednesday questioning diplomat george kent about the witness the committee will hear from today. Former u. S. Ambassador to ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch. Congresswoman demings joins us now. Its great to be with you. Isnt a better day when someone republicans are moved to see possibly the building of the makings of a crime that was committed . Why are republicans and democrats still so far apart on this . Well, you know, as a former Law Enforcement officer who arrested a lot of people yeah. For violations of law, it has just been baffling to me to watch my republican colleagues totally disregard, totally ignore evidence that is pretty overwhelming, evidence that is pretty clear and convincing about the president s wrongdoing. The only excuse i can come up with is that they are afraid to death of the president of the United States, which is really pretty disgraceful. But thats a thats rough when you have a crime being i mean, or is it that obvious to you right now in your estimate that a crime has been committed . Its clear and convincing. The only question that yet remains is what are we willing to do about it . You know, mika, we have two groups of people i found now the congress. We have people who are true Public Servants that really want to do the right thing, make the world a better place. And then we have a group of people who only care about themselves. They only care about the next election. And people unfortunately who have proven that they are willing to do and say anything that really makes themselves look incompetent and immoral to stay on the right side, i guess, if you will, of the president. Congresswoman, its willie geist. Great to see you. Good to see you. Looking ahead to the hearing that begins just under 90 minutes from now, without giving away too much, i guess, what do you want to know from ambassador Marie Yovanovitch who was effectively run out of her job in may as a long time ambassador to ukraine she says because of pressure put on her by Rudy Giuliani and his cronies . You know, i think its pretty interesting when President Trump refers to ambassador yovanovitch in the phone call with president zelensky, he refers to her as the woman. The woman is bad news. Im not sure if he just didnt know his ambassadors name or whether theres some other message coming from this president about that. And then he goes into a lot of things are going to happen to her. Shes getting ready to go through some things. Which i got to tell you, willie, as a farmer law enforcemeormer officer, that really bothers me. What does that mean . We have an ambassador who say foreign Career Service officer who really has a stellar reputation who received a phone call in the middle of the night basically telling her at the direction of the president and hissen abler Rudy Giuliani that she needs to get on the next plane out of ukraine. And basically for her own safety. I also thought it was interesting that president zelensky on that call said to the president , well thank you, youre the first person to tell me that this is a bad ambassador. Isnt that interesting that not the people on the ground in ukraine with the with president zelensky would have shared that with them, but President Trump and his personal attorney were the first people to say how bad she was. I just think the Smear Campaign was all about creating a channel for their shady, improper, operation, Foreign Policy operation to get dirt on political riflvals and to say tt russia was not responsible for interfering in the 2016 election when we all know that russia interfered. Congressman demings, this is David Ignatius. Hi, david. I want to ask you about a particular possibility about why why ambassador yovanovitch was pushed out. She said, as you know, in her deposition earlier to the committee that she believed that she was standing in the way of these schemes by giuliani and his cronies, as we said earlier, parnas and fruman. Is that something that youre going to ask her about today . And are you going to get some evidence of what it was that she was trying to stop . What this corrupt deal was . Well, its interesting, you know, everyone is at least of the republicans and the president and the chief of staff at the white house are trying to say that the whole phone call was about corruption, that the president was trying to get rid of corruption. But yet during the call on july 25th, not once did he mention the word corruption. And if he was serious about fighting corruption, i believe ambassador yovanovitch was the right person for the job based on her record. But i do believe, david, that she was too much of a person of integrity and honor and decency to really be a part of their shady undercover scheme and she had to be removed. Yet again, the president and those around him who are enabling him to do wrong yet obstructing justice and obstructing the right thing moving forward. Congresswoman, donny deutsch. Just want to shift gears a second. In the previous segment we were talking about the heinous, loath some racist white supremacist, White Nationalist emails from Stephen Miller. And one of the problems with this news cycle is we tend to move on. Sometimes the democrats dont play as hard as i wish they could or would. How do you and your copatriots take this do not let go of this bone . This is a man who literally his top adviser who has with stood as people come and go, and why do we not make the republicans and the president continually defend him day in and day out . We cant let this story go. That one is too important as is important as were going to be watching eight hours of impeachment, you know, inquiries over the next weeks, we cant move on from this. How do you and your partners keep this alive until we run this guy out of the office . Well, you know, as a former Law Enforcement officer what i came to realize was when a criminal or a person involved in wrongdoing or illegal behaver g behavior and they got away with something over and over again, they became more and more brazing. Really theyre trying to send a message this is okay or its normal. Look, i wish i could control racism in this country. I cannot do that. I cannot stop a person from being a racist or not. But what i can do is utilize my voice and whatever influence i have to keep a known, clearly identified racist out of government service. And youre absolutely correct, we need to tie him to the president and this Administration Like a tie around their necks. And i will do everything that i can to do that and invite my colleagues to join me. There you go. Congresswoman val demingsing, great to have you on the show. [ cheers and applause ] build the wall build the wall build the wall. Thank you. Its being built. Its going up good. And its its a big deal. How many miles of wall has been constructed . Not wall thats replacing old wall, but new wall has been built to this point . So 78 miles of new wall has been built. So much of that obviously is replacing wall that formerly existed president was insufficient. How many miles of wall now exists where there was no wall whatsoever. So my response to that is every mile of wall thats being built is a new mile of wall. No disagreements. But how many just for a breakdown, how many miles formerly existed that have now been ren know vantd replace and how many miles new where nothing existed. Right now the 78 miles that have been biluilt have been bui there wherethere was an existing form of barrier. We just started breaking ground on rgv where were building miles of new wall where there has been no structure there at all. Thats just now starting, the construction of new wall begins actually now . Thats correct. Do you remember, willie, when lionel how does he get a job . When line yell went to mr. Burns and mr. Burns came with a counteroffer and said he had a counteroffer that he think you would be suited fine . This was a counteroffer and he said well take it. Request y could you see that . Its a zero. You painted a circle. So i actually have a friend that always tells me that donald trump has built all these miles. Smart person, too. Smart person. What is that . Went to one of the best schools in america. Says trumps built over 300 miles of new wall. Close. Close to 300 miles. Just a little under 300 miles. Zero. He has built no new wall. And can we play that clip again of him lying . Of him lying . Of him lying to the crowd. And this is what insults the good people of louisiana. He lied to you last night. He lied to you. He thinks you are too stupid. I can proudly announce that we have ended catch and release and we are building the wall faster than anyone thought possible. Heres the thing, my good friends in louisiana, thats a lie. They arent building the wall faster. Zero. Youre clapping for a lie. Well, hes lying to them, what do they know . You want to trust your president , right . But you cant because he lies every time he opens his mouth. Thank you. Thank you for clapping at a guy. Its being built. No its not actually. Zero. Its a big deal. No, its really its really zero is a small deal. Theres no wall. Theres no wall, donald. You havent built a mile of the wall and it makes me sad because has Border Security in the is what makes me sad. Do you know that when barack obama was president of the United States, illegal crossings from mexico in the United States were the lowest that he had been in 50 years . 50 years. I was playing tee ball in georgia the last time they were this low, right . Since donald trump has come in, theyve skyrocketed and he hasnt built a single mile of wall. In part because people like Lindsey Graham and john cornyn said, well, it does you no good. By the way, thats not your take or my take or anyones no ta take or my take. Yesterday from the acting commissioner, there has been no new wall. He said it. 78 miles have been renovated. Obamas wall. He fixed up obamas wall. Yes, the previous wall. The question for President Trump is why havent you built the wall . You owned washington for the first two years. It was your theme. It was your Central Campaign rallies. It was like he used it as a chant at his rallies to get elected. The democrats were willing to give donald trump d 22 billion o build the wall and he wouldnt take it. I think you nailed it. It just sounds like donald trump has been very slowly not very efficiently renovating Barack Obamas wall. And here is the thing he does it, slaps his wall on it. Mexico hasnt paid for the wall. He said mexico would, he lied about that too. He actually has been stealing from the u. S. Military, from military construction projects. So i know it wont be as splashy in 2020 as it was in 2016, we are going to build the wall and mexico is going to pay for it, believe me. 2020 he has to say, were not really going to build the wall but if we do build the wall, well, the pentagon is going to pay for it because were going to gut military readiness. Difference in 2020 and 2016 . Hes got to answer to what he has done and what he has failed at. It has been a failed presidency. Im confused though. Because i was always a big nikki haley fan and nikki haley came on the other day and said he doesnt lie. A bummer. Theres so much news i get confused. Yeah, i understand. You just showed it really clear. Yeah, he lied. He lied there. Why did nikki haley say he never lies . He lies all the time. Really . He knows it. We know wrestling is not true. Whats that . We know wrestling is not true. What . We know the enemies, the bad guys are not really bad guys. But yet we are ahh and what we just saw was wwe and how people respond, it is the same way folks respond when they were cheering for dusty rhodes. I just dated myself. Thats entertainment. My god, thats so true. It is like those poor people that he lied to and made them read the transcript. It wasnt a transcript. It said at the top of the report, not a transcript. By the way, yesterday, rightly, the impeachment and the School Shooting were the big headlines of the day, but this is a massive headline. This is the president s own acting commissioner of customs and Border Patrol admitting there is no new wall. That Campaign Promise is a lie. We have a graphic that msnbc you cant see it. We think the big headline is Stephen Miller. Let us not let go of Stephen Miller. We will be right back with more morning joe. It was republican john can i see it again. And Democrat John kennedy back that was 2004. I want to see the second part. Did he say he supported john kerry. Sort of seemed a little embarrassed. Here is the thing about him. Elise, bless his heart. Bless his heart. Real southerners like us and not yankees like him that go to oxford i mean sir john not ole miss. Oh, no ole miss for him. Exactly. He did not go to the real oxford, mississippi. Thats right. He went to the one overseas, like sir john where they i dont know. Did you think he had tea at 4 00 . I went to you know, i went to two Southern State schools, you know. So we i didnt even no what he was talking about there. Do people at oxford like him really drink goat milk . I dont understand this. With scones. With scones. What did he do when sir john kennedy of oxford had tea at 4 00 every afternoon, what do you think what type of scone do you think this john kerry supporter had . Do you think he wore the robes . Yes. At the debating society and all of that . You know he did. You know he did. He cleans up very well. He looked very i mean, again, this is just 2004. I mean willie and i, we were out of turkish just out. Just out. Ineligible to vote, but we were just out and we came back to the United States and we said, who is this fine young, upright, educated, avocado toast, goat milk sipping, educated oxford man . Why, it was sir john kennedy. How did he use his platform as an oxford man . Im a democrat. I support senator kerry. I have endorsed senator kerry. Can i see that again. Wow. That seems very different from the other i mean because i dont i dont understand, willie. You know what . It is early in the morning and i got to tell you, im disoriented. The place, i dont really it is so impossible. Where am i. Ive been on google maps. Just play it one more time and i think maybe i can piece the two together. Maybe i can synthesize it in my mind. Im a democrat. I support senator kerry. I have endorsed senator kerry. Seems different. Three words, elise. Bless his heart. You know, hes trying to run away from his past so fast. He thinks if he says nancy pelosi sucks and he thinks that that he can go on and talk this way that i mean in the south, you know, dont we call those Snake Oil Salesmen . What does he have against goat milk if he really is from louisiana, doesnt he hang with goats . Why doesnt he hang with goats . Willie, why does he hate goats . You know why . Ill tell you why, because they dont have goats in oxford obviously. I would like to Say Something on behalf of Vanderbilt University where i went and senator kennedy went. My meals were lunchables. Oh, yummy. Combos and mountain dew, every day like clock work i had that. My meals at university of alabama, for breakfast i had dreamland ribs. For luncheon i had dreamland ribs. For dinner, i would have dreamland ribs. You know what they had on the side . Dreamland ribs in tuscaloosa. Dreamland ribs. White bread. Thats all you get, to sop it up. In fact, i wept nt to dreamland much my roommate was afraid i would get gout so. Fantastic. The breakfast, lunch and dinner of champions. I think we can call hi pop railwaysy. We have elise jorden, columnist and associate editor for the washington post, David Ignatius. Donnie is here. Politics and journalism professor, and msnbc political contributor jason tub is here. Last day. I dont want to talk about it. Jim. No. So upsetting. Jen is here. I dont understand this. I feel like i dont understand this. I feel betrayed by my cbs counterpart. It is horrible. Not good. It is beia big poach and wrong. Were still in 11th hour negotiations. We will go right up to the trade deadline to see if we can work something out to keep jen here. Exactly, thank you. Because shes the most valuable Morning Joe Team member. Everybody thinks Norah Odonnell is the nicee, but taking jen from us is awful. Lets get to the news. It is friday. It is fun, but we are just hours away from more public testimony in the impeachment probe President Trump. Today we will hear from former ambassador to ukraine, may reyovanovitch. She said she was the subject of a Smear Campaign. Yovanovitch testified last month that u. S. Ambassador to the eu, gordon sund sondland suggested she tweet praise about President Trump if she wanted to save her job. So embarrassing. You have to tweet things to save your job. To tweet . As a Foreign Service dedicated servant. Really . A separate closeddoor deposition also has been scheduled for later this afternoon. Lawmakers want to hear from state Department Official david holmes. He is the staffer that ambassador bill taylor referenced in his testimony wednesday as having overheard a phone call where President Trump reportedly asked ambassador sondland about the status of investigations in ukraine. That phone call was a David Ignatius, that was a showstopper. It was amazing. I didnt see that coming. In the annals of insecurity, that has to be way up there, number one. The president is talking so loud through the cellphone that you can hear him. That he is overheard of we know of two people but what about igor and ivan at the next table . Yeah. It is just extraordinary that this happened. Among other things it shows such a loose white house operation. Yeah. I dont know whether we will hear publicly from holmes, who overheard the testimony, and theres said to be a second person. So loud was this conversation that the second person also may have heard it. And part of you know, first of all, donald speaks very loudly. So they say. So they say. Secondly, there is, of course, the funny reality that sondland would want everybody to know that he was speaking to the president. Look at me, look at this. Inner circle, and now the president says i didnt even know the guy, i dont even remember him. Little did he know, ive got the president here, would end up with him testifying before congress. Yeah. Now, david, an argument that republicans have been making that is such a calloused argument, callous argument, is theyre saying, you know, it doesnt matter. Yes, the aid was delayed. Yes, it took them a while to get the aid, but no harm, no foul. But you actually say that delay actually caused the death of ukrainians. So i dont know that i would say it caused the death. It is hard to do cause and effect, but the thing that people should understand is that there was a war going on, on the Eastern Front of ukraine there were russianbacked forces who were counting on this u. S. Military aid. It was a sign of our commitment to support them. In this period where the president held it up arbitrarily waiting for some political statement from ukraine in effect to support his campaign, people at the front were dying. There are daily reports from the european monitors, and you can just read the people who died day after day in this period, july, august, september. People who might not have died had that aid have been there . Right. We cant it is hard to say, but what we do know is that the president was completely oblivious to the reality of the war going on. Didnt care. It was an issue for him. Still ahead on morning joe, nancy pelosi took some time yesterday to speak directly to the president. The president has something that has exculpatory, mr. Prp president , that means you have anything that shows your innocence then he should make that known. Thats part of the inquiry. Really spelled it out for him. She has to. More on what the House Speaker had to say to the president next on morning joe. Walk on by i just cant get over losing you i just cant get over lo you applebees new sizzlin entrees. Now starting at 9. 99. Now thats eatin good in the neighborhood. At verizon, were building the most powerful 5g experience for america. Thats why the nfl chose verizon. Because they need the massive capacity of 5g with ultra wideband, so more screaming, streaming, posting fans. Can experience 5g all at once. This is happening in 13 stadiums all across the country. Now if verizon 5g can do this for the nfl. Imagine what it can do for you. Its important to remind republicans that were talking about criminal behavior. We are talking about extortion, bribery. Here is House Speaker nancy pelosi speaking yesterday. The devastating testimony corroborated evidence of bribery uncovered in the inquiry and that the president abused power and violated his oath by threatening to withhold military aid and a white house meeting in an exchange for an investigation into his political rival. Quid pro quo, bribery. Bribery. That is in the constitution attached to the impeachment proceedings. So what was the bribe here . The bribe is to grant or withhold military assistance in return for a Public Statement of a fake investigation into the elections. I mean bribery is pretty easy here. Im going to give you this money and you change what you are doing as a leader of your country in exchange. This is what donald trump is doing here on a much he is bribing them with a military what is interesting is congress has already passed this. He still is holding it up because he doesnt believe the constitution holds any checks and balances for him. So he he can call it bribery, you can call it arms for dirt, for political dirt. You can call it a lot of things, but quid pro quo really undersells it, doesnt it . A few names here. A congressman from ohio, representative william jefferson, mario biage, of course former illinois governor, all in jail for bribery. It is a crime, it is that simple. It was no different, mayor the governor of illinois, basically he had a seat for sale and he said, what are you going to pay me for this seat. Oh, by the way, it actually never happened but he still went to jail. Exactly. So the republicans argument, well, we eventually but you know what, willie, i dont think anybody we can let anybody talk about blago like that. Im just making a point. They came after him because of health care, he wanted to pass health care. Thank you, nancy pelosi. This is something the average person can understand. No laughing. It is a bribe, and thats a crime. I know it is a crime. People go to jail for it. So regardless of whether it is in the constitution, in our basic cri basic criminal system, a bribe is a criminal activity you go to prison for. It was a simple bribe. As to your point, he could easily have said, okay, unless you give me 10 million im not giving you the aid. He was asking for something more valuable. He was asking to win the next election. Get me dirt on the guy i feel most vulnerable against. We have a president who tried to bribe. Thats something anybody at the Kitchen Table can understand. You know, the thing is, jason, this is nothing new. Like everybody thats ever served in congress, everybody thats ever served in washington, d. C. , everybody that has ever had an aide sit down with them and say, joe, you need to look over these fec rules, right . Yeah. I mean, look no, donald trump has already committed a felony. He actually if i would have paid somebody off a week before any of my four Congressional Elections to keep them quiet and not report them, i would be in jail. Joe, thats the reason that this actually works. Thats the reason that republicans are particularly concerned right now. The reason that this current impeachment hearing works is because we already know donald trump. Because we know this is how he operates. Because just a couple of weeks ago there were reports out of politico he had members at the white house saying, hey, look, i wont fund raise for you in 2020 if you dont vote for me to not be removed from office. All of this is in line with how the man advertised himself on television for 12 years where he said all he does is cut deals. I want to say this because i think it is the really critical thing for everybody sitting at home and paying attention. I was surprised, around the washington, d. C. Area, my barber, my dentist, people locally are paying attention to this issue. Unless the republicans can find an alternative explanation for the behavior, they have absolutely no chance of changing the narrative for the hearings. It is so obvious what the president has done. It is so obvious he disturbed the lives and careers of civil servants, they cant change the narrative. Screaming at people like jim jordan did is not going to change anything. It is so obvious. What would strouse say . Thats strouse. The defenses are getting more pathetic by the day. They really are. What weve seen from the cable news side of it anyway is that bill taylor and george kent were, quote, nerds. That they are pencilneck geeks. Who said that . Who said that . It has been on other networks, people are saying things like this. Coming up on morning joe, just minutes away from the start of another public impeachment hearing into President Trump. We will be staying on the air live as that testimony gets under way. Morning joe is back in a moment. I thought i was managing my moderate to severe Crohns Disease. Theres a live look at the hearing room, and in just a matter of moments we will be hearing from the former ambassador of ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch will be testifying today. We will be covering that live all day on msnbc. David, as we look there, what do you expect . So i think this will be dramatic testimony in the sense that this ambassador was the one who was, for reasons i hope we will understand better today, the enemy of giuliani, the enemy of trump. They wanted to have her out, trump was obsessed with her, that bad woman, bad things are going to happen to her. She is the person who appealed personally for help from secretary of state pompeo, wanted somebody to defend her, wanted just to understand what was happening to her. Didnt get answers. I think well hear quite a dramatic, emotional story today from her, and i hope the American People will find it compelling. Willie, this is the end of the first week of the impeachment hearings. I think a lot of people were really felt the mueller investigation, muellers testimony ante climactic. This has been the opposite. It is pretty gripping. It is a build. Every day has built on the previous day. Ive been quite critical of the way democrats have run their committees and their hearings over the first couple of years of the Trump Administration, but this actually has been very gripping and very compelling. Not because it is good theater but because we are getting facts that we as americans need to know. Yes. The boring argument that you heard from the white house and other supporters of President Trump, i think most democrats will taboring, which means that you hthat will take boring, which means there were two witnesses who presented facts and told a clear story of what they say happened in ukraine with the president , as you say, traded arms for dirt on a political opponent. As david says, Marie Yovanovitch is a career diplomat, first appointed by president bush, then posted to ukraine by president obama. Nonpartisan, not a never trumper as she will be accused of being. You see some of the visual aids on the republican side, on the righthand side there. Think we will see she is someone who will tell the story of being run out of her job. Yes. Because she ran afoul of the president s personal attorney and didnt receive any support from the state department when she complained about it. When you hear her story, imagine being an ambassador serving in a country in the middle of a hot war and being told that her security is at risk, not given any reason why, by your own country and being told she is going to go through some things in a threatening manner. What a horrifying experience for her. And that happened after one of the president s closest advisers or most trusted ambassadors told her, you need to tweet something positively about the commander in chief if you warrant the pressure to be taken off of you. It is incredible. All right. We will stay on this. Of course, be watching every moment of this. We will check in right now for business before the bell with cnbcs dominic chu. Dom. Mika, the battle over President Trumps tax returns might be headed to the Supreme Court. Attorneys representing the president asked americas highest court to hear a case that will allow his personal tax returns to stay secret. If the court does agree to hear the case, thats a big if, it would represent the first time a sitting president s personal finances and business dealings will be scrutinized at that kind of level. Now, right now a federal Appeals Court has already ordered that trumps Accounting Firm turn over eight years worth of tax returns to the office of the District Attorney in manhattan after a subpoena was issued. Legal experts are watching closely because this could be any possible sign or any possible precedent set on whether a sitting president could have blanket criminal immunity while still in the oval office. A big legal matter there. The administration dom, by the way. Yes. I just cant imagine the Supreme Court even reviewing this case, even agreeing to take this case. I cant imagine that a sufficient numbers of members of the court would overrule what the state says it needs to investigate a matter. Well, this becomes interesting because it could it could come down to party, it could come down to politics. You do need four sitting justices to agree to take on a case, for it to be adopted or taken on by the high court. It comes down to whether or not there are at least a small group of people within the court itself who believes that this is a big enough of a deal to actually take the case and set a precedent and therefore override a federal Appeals Court. Thats a big deal there. Thats the reason it will be so heavily scrutinized i think in many legal circles, guys. Can i throw you a curveball here . Sure. I want to talk about disney plus because my kids immediately made me download it because were the boys in my family, were all sort of star wars nuts. Uhhuh. And do you have any info . How has disney plus what kind of week has disney plus had . It has been a banner one, i would say that much. Im one of the folks out there, even though we all work at Nbc Universal and we all will be a peacock subscriber when the streaming comes out. Of course, we will. We all will be there. When 6 00 a. M. Came around that morning, i was like you, i went and downloaded and signed up for the bundle that includes espn plus and hulu as well. I was one of 10 Million People in the first couple of days that signed up for it. The reason i bring that up is because it puts it on a crazy pace in terps of subscribers. Verizon is giving it away for a year for free for wireless customers. Those customers are not paying to have disney plus. The issue is whether or not those subscribers actually stick around for the streaming service. Joe, to your point, i mean your kids might be star wars fans, i am a star wars fan. I am a star wars fan. I love marvel movies and i am watching it myself. I will say my daughter has already watched all three cars movies in the first couple of days and i feel like i will be watching a lot more moana and everything else. Alex keeps telling me to move on. Did you see the First Episode of the mandelorean . I did and im hooked. The second episode is out, right . Yes, it is out today. I will be watching it at some point this weekend. Jon favreau is the producer of it. I heard 30 million per episode. Wow. I got to tell you, i was there is ambassador former ambassador Marie Yovanovitch. She is about to testify on capitol hill. She is arriving now. Go through the process of getting into the hearing room and getting in place and going through security. But the impeachment proceedings are officially set to begin with the arrival of the former ambassador. Joining us now, assistant speaker of the house, democratic congressman Ben Ray Lujan of new mexico. He is a candidate for u. S. Senate. Congressman, before we get to impeachment we have to ask you about Stephen Miller, the 900 emails, his 900 emails that were unearthed that show him those were just to breitbart. Just those to breitbart, shows him promoting White Supremacy. Should he resign . If he does not resign, should there be hearing on the hill where he is forced to explain, a guy that run Donald Trumps Foreign Policy in effect as it pertains or at least his immigration policy, that he has been a champion of White Supremacy . Joe, yes and yes. You know, were now learning more and more about Stephen Miller, and it is not surprising what we are learning now. With these revelations of these emails and the hate speech that Stephen Miller continued to spread, but here are some statistics that should alarm us coming from the fbi. This is from the Trump Administration. Theres been a rise of hate crimes against hispanics, against the Latino Community by 41 since 2016. We are at a 16year high when it comes to hate crimes across america and we also know that theyre under reported. Now, who is it that has the president s here at the highest levels, that continues to move these policies forward, that are separating children, tearing children apart, putting them in cages . The architect of the muslim ban. Every hateful policy thats come out that is race igs, thist, th filled with White Nationalism is coming from Stephen Miller. He has to go. It is unbelievable. The president should remove him immediately. You know, mika, of course White Nationalists also hate jews. The fact that the white house brings up the fact that Stephen Miller is jewish him if he is promoting White Nationalism. We know what happened in pittsburgh. You can just see what is happening in brooklyn every week. It is fuelled, antisemitism is fuelled by this sort of promotion of White Nationalism and the refusal to call it out. If you are sitting next to him, working with him, interacting with him in the white house or he works for you, this is something that should be deeply troubling. Again, as elijah brought out, your silence in it is you are taking part in it. It is that serious. If i may add, with all that is happening across the country and we see the hearing room filling up with more journalists, with the witness, ambassador yovanovitch was just arriving and the members of congress, our colleagues soon will be in there, we still have to call out hate and racism and White Nationalism wherever it exists. Thats why it is important for everyone across the country to speak up and call it out. But especially if it exists in the white house. Thats right. For sure. Go ahead, willie. Congressman, it is willie geist. We have pointed out earlier on the show we havent heard a republican speak up about the Stephen Miller emails. When you talk privately to any of your republican colleagues in the senate, will they be outraged by this or are they so far gone with donald trump they will go along for the ride . Excuse me, in the house. Look, when were visiting with our colleagues in the house or even in the senate, theyre not happy at all with the actions taken by this administration, and in private theyre very concerned. Im just hoping that theyre willing to speak up publicly. Look, especially when it comes to racism and White Nationalism, why is it that the congress elected leaders that are responsible for carrying out the responsibilities on behalf of our constituents, why cant everyone speak up . Thats what im hoping. I hope today to hear from republican colleagues, not just here in the house but across the country, governors, whoever it may be. Speak up, stand up to this. Even the president s own family, stand up to this nonsense and call him out. It should be easy, david. I want to just turn back to the impeachment hearings that are going on and continue this morning. What are you hearing from your constituents . What are you hear about how this is playing back home as people watch the hearings . As i traveled around new mexico, in the town halls that i held in the third Congressional District of new mexico, constituents want to hear the facts. Theyre tuning in. Theyre constantly asking the questions, is it okay for the president of the United States of america to ask a foreign leader right. The president of ukraine for a personal political favor that jeopardizes national security. Thats the question that comes up at town halls. I hear it from constituents, and it is the question that our republican colleagues refuse to answer. They try skipping and moving around as opposed to answering that important question. We have to make sure that we make it abundantly clear for the president to do this. I mean, look, he has engaged in bribery. This is ex totortion, corruptiot the highest level. Congressman Ben Ray Lujan, thank you for being on. Now we want to turn to the latest entry in the democratic president ial race, former goff Deval Patrick of massachusetts who announced his candidacy yesterday. Good to have you here. Thank you. Good to be with you. Where do you think you can make inroads where other candidates havent . First of all, i think we have a really, really talented and strong democratic field. Many of them are friends of mine and i respect the efforts they put in and the folks who support them and how many they have done to advance the national conversation. But i would say that generally the focus has been on redress and theres a lot about that that i like. But i want us also to focus on progress. On how do we grow an economy out and to the middle and to the mirg naliz marginalized. I think i bring a range of Life Experiences that is just different. I grew up in poverty. I have had an opportunity to get a great education and to lead in civil rights, in business law, in business, as a twoterm governor. So i understand some of the complexities of getting things done and i am hungry for the kind of ambitious agenda we have at large right now, and frankly it is also really exciting that the public seems to have an appetite today for solutions as large as the challenges that face us. When i think about all of that and the opportunity to unify, not just after the campaign but during the campaign, it is a moment that i want to be a part of. So, governor, what is your response to people in the in the Democratic Base, and certainly im sure you will hear from Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders as well about your work as a venture capitalist, your work at bayne capital, a Company Whose name was actually uttered as in a negative sense during the 2012 campaign when mitt romney was running . Thats right. And, first of all, im proud of the work i have done. I have never taken a job where i have been willing to leave my con shuns at the door. I Vice President now. I started a new business at bane capital after two terms as governor where we were investing in companies in north america for both financial return or measurable social and environmental impact. That reflect the view i have of thinking about longterm value, not just the value to shareholders but the impact and value to other stakeholders, people, the planet, employees. We have been terrifically successful in building that business and, frankly, in moving the whole conversation in the economy about that way of being a capitalist. Of course i have no problem with capitalists or capitalism. In fact, i asked John Hickenlooper several times whether he was a capitalist or not, hoping he would say yes the first time. So i follow up and this is not from me, but this would be a question that i think a lot of democrats or i could toss it to anyone and he would ask the same question im sure. You were governor, you had the chance to do so many things. You had an incredible platform. Many in the Democratic Base might ask why you would use that platform to go work for a venture capitalist firm. Well, first of all the work im doing as i described is about bringing the same kinds of instincts, the same kinds of issues and interests to bear in a business context that i brought to bear in government. Frankly, when i was in business before going in government, one of the things that bothered me most was this quarter to quarter shormterm focus, sometimes i think without really regarding the interest of the enterprise. Joe, that same bad habit has come into the way we govern. We govern for the next election cycle or next news cycle. We dont govern for the next generation. We tried to do it differently when i was governor of massachusetts. When i saw this opportunity to help build a new business in a major Institutional Investment firm where the focus was on both financial prurn band getting it for employees, and modelling it was a false trade all along. Right. All along, to have to trade return for impact. That is an opportunity to make a change that goes well beyond our fund, but helps to change the narrative in business and the notion of what is responsible capitalism. Governor patrick, it is willie geist. Good to see you this morning. Hi, willie. Good morning. You said in your first interview yesterday, you said, weve got a field of candidates who i respect to paraphrase what you said but it seems to be nostalgia sundays, in your words, and then the candidates on the other side who say it is my way or the highway, most people read it as Bernie Sanders first and Elizabeth Warren second. You said, i always felt that joe bidens support is soft, it feels it is contracting rather than expanding. What specific weakness do you see in Vice President bidens candidacy . It is a fair question and one i anticipated, but i dont want to be about the other candidates. I want to talk about why im in the race. I tried to talk about how it is ear norm usually important for us to appreciate that if and when we are able to a democrat is able to beat the incumbe incumbent president and have the opportunity to lead. We cannot be backward looking. This cant be about the notion that if we just remove the incumbent we can go back to doing what we used to do because so is the Biden Campaign backward looking . Well, look, my campaign is forward looking, let me put it that way. I think in addition to the redress, to fixing a Health Care System that doesnt reach everyone and isnt affordable, in fixing an immigration system that needs a comprehensive redo, or a tax system that needs to be simplified, smoothed out and fair, we need a strategy for how we grow before that. You will hear more about that in what we call the opportunity agenda in a little while. On the other side of the spectrum, governor, do you agree a candidate who espouses medicare for all can win a general election in this country . I dont know. But i think the point is that every single democrat believes we must in short order reach 100 of americans with affordable and Quality Health care and the republicans dont. Thats very important to remember. We have all kinds of nuances about the means to get there. Personally, i think a public option, and that public option might well be medicare, is a better strategy. It has nothing to do loving the private insurance industry. But about the creative tension that comes when you have that kind of competition. When you have that kind of choice. So there are others, as you heard, who have different views about how to get there getting there is the key point. Lets talk about getting there. What is your path . Maybe this is a question for the table. You look at Pete Buttigieg that could take iowa and then gain momentum. Elizabeth warren has growing numbers. Joe biden has a stronghold in South Carolina and nevada and other early states, what exactly is your path . How can you make a headway and impact on this race. First, i appreciate you giving me some air time. That is a start. Im in california this morning, were going to be in nevada and iowa in the course of the next couple days and down in South Carolina. Were im going to try to be everywhere. Im going to engage with everyone and beyond the early states and the delegate count that mika you were referring to, and frankly that we are thinking about, i want to try to project that this campaign is about everyone everywhere. Wed have this way and maybe it is just a Necessary Evil of property access process, focusing on certain people because that is where you build your momentum and so on. I get that, really, i do. You have to understand that there are folks even in those states, but certainly in others, who feel they are not important because nobody is talking about them. That if you know, it is there is a way you feel left out and left back. If youre not a source of money for the campaign, or a source of delegates for the campaign in the early days. And i want to call that out and i understand the practicalities, i do. So governor patrick, the standard wisdom is to get the democratic nomination the wisdom is you have to go through black voters, black women voters, what specifically in terms of policy around criminal justice, policy around housing, the ways in which we are situated with regards to the economy. They talk about low employment, we know where we are in terms of the economy. What would you say to black voters in particular who are invested in the symbolism of balm but they want something more, Say Something directly to them. First of all i want you to know that i see you. I see those voters as i do others. Folks that dont feel like theyre seen. I talk about how growing up on the south side of chicago, the way folks were left feeling when the steel mills closed. That the economy just moved on and kicked them to the curb. The way that opioids dropped, that is something we have been feeling in our own community and on the south side and that folks feel now in many, many communities, black, brown, and white, so the first point when i talk about everyone everywhere making sure that people understand that i see them and were going to governor for t f. We need an economy that is growing out, investing in education and innovation and infrastructure. That is a strategy we pursued to great effect in massachusetts, and we came out of the worst recession in living memory fa faster than most states, and that is about working people, marginalized people. And incarceration is a scandal that has been called out, but needs now to be dealt with. And you know, it is back to this governing by slogan that we have done. Sounds good, really compelling, doesnt work. And we can start by using some of the strategies that we did in massachusetts. And great other ideas you will hear more about this soon. Former governor duval patrick, thank you for being with us. Hope to see you seen. Nicole wallace will join the table as we kick off todays cove of the house impeachment hearing. A quick break in 90 seconds. Im your 70lb st. Bernard puppy, and my lack of impulse control, is about to become your problem. Ahh no, come on. I saw you eating poop earlier. Hey my focus is on the road, and thats saving me cash with drivewise. Whos the dummy now . Whoof whoof so get allstate where good drivers save 40 for avoiding mayhem, like me. Sorry hes a baby all right, welcome back now. Also with nicole on msnbc. Former communication director for george w. Bush. Were watching more testimony playout today. Marie yovanovitch has quite a story to tell. I get chills thinking about what she went through. I think the most interesting thing told about her this week is in the testimony on tuesday when they invoked the service of your dad, mika and they put her in that category of american states men and women. And really described, and i think tried to rattle all of us back to what was normal. These were the kind of patriots, diplomats, and people that make America Great in create. Not a bogus parallel corrupt world. Can you just breiefly answer why not one isingle republican has spoken out about the 900 emails that promote nation n nationalism. They have been the party that embraces the record of 19 allegations of sexual misconduct. His openably braisingly White Nationalist cozy agenda when it comes to immigration. And youre likely to see a party that she was squirrelled out of ukraine for security. Not because there was a threat, but because she was in danger from giuliani. And warned about it. I think they will describe what happened when she was actually fired. She went in to see the deputy secretary of state, and sullivan said youre out and she said what did i do wrong, and sullivan said you didnt do anything wrong. It was such a powerful moment, this woman who was shunned, driven out of the government, and what did i do . Mike pompeo knew it was going on not as a matter of state Department Business but rudy, igor, and lev running around doing their business. This might actually start on time. Mike pompeo doesnt get enough attention. There is two scenarios, he was helping to orchestrate the off book Political Campaign run by donald trump and Rudy Giuliani, or he was oblivious to what was being done to all of his employees. He was asked repeatedly to defend her, and we have on the record in testimony a call from the state department to yovanovitch at 1 00 in the morning where they say we need to get you out on the next plane. What did he do . I think the fact pattern is just as par real for mike cpompeo as trump. We know that mike pompeo was listening in on the phone call of which donald trump said of
