Legendary title away from barnacle, Donnie Deutsch. The man has had a busy life. Former aide to the white house alesse jordan, former editor of the Washington Post eugene robinson. And mika has the morning off and, willie, that is a good thing because there are some things you none of us want mika to see. Before we go furg, theres something we need to disclose to our viewers. Theres a photograph, maybe youve seen it right now posted yesterday by Donnie Deutsch. Donnie deutsch put this on an instagram page. That is a young Donnie Deutsch in the match game with gene rayburn. Explain yourself. Donnie, first, is this one of those says when you move to a neighborhood like that snl skit you have to alert people when you have criminal backgrounds, so is this part of a restraining order that and a requirement yes, its the you are now on a list. Its not the sex ovengder offender list. I won the super match with betty white. Ive got my polyester suit and i walked around thinking i looked cool there. That was the peak of my tv career as you well know, joe. Its been downhill ever since. Im afraid to ask what happened there. But, willie, we have a lot to talk about today. Im going to have some trouble getting past that image in my mind. It looks kind of like a poor mans jeff flynn of the elo. Nice. Needs glasses. And he actually did that on purpose. Wow. Anyway, willie, we have some other things that are humerus or would be humerus if the stakes werent so high. Donald trump just making things up left and right and hes not even good at it. Everybody knows hes lying. And apparently, if you look at some of these polls, hes doing nothing but damaging the republicans who need him to stay out of the way and be quiet the most, which is, again, i think one of the great insights and were going to have Steve Schmidt on today was when steve said earlier this week, hey, you know, donald trump won in part in 2016 because he knew he had to stay out of the way the last ten days. When people were talking about Hillary Clinton, when people were talking about the letter, donald trump is doing well. When they talk about donald trump, his numbers are going down. Willie, i think hes forgotten that strategy. Yeah. Whats the opposite of staying out of the way . Thats what the president is doing right now. Hes doing two rallies a day going forward. He had another one in missouri last night. He gave a speech on immigration yesterday, sharply worded announcing two immigration policies using the roosevelt room as his back drop, the president vowed to hold undocumented immigrants in detention until they could be deported. In the speech, the president repeatedly highlighted what he said was a threat posed by the caravan of migrants heading towards the u. S. Border. At this very moment, large, well organized caravans on of migrants are marching towards our southern border. Some people call it an invasion. Its like an invasion. They are violently overrun the Mexican Border. You saw that two days ago. These are tough people, in many cases. A lot of young men, strong men. A lot of men that maybe we dont want in our country. We have no idea who they are. All we know is theyre pretty tough people when they can blast through the mexican military and Mexican Police. Theyre pretty tough people. Even mexico said, wow, these are tough people. I dont want them in our country. And women with dont want them in our country. Women want security. Men dont want them in our country, but the women do not want them. Women want security. You look at what the women are looking for, they want to have security. Anybody throwing stones, rocks, like they did to mexico and the mexican military, Mexican Police, where they badly hurt police and soldiers of mexico, we will consider that a firearm. Because theres not much difference. When you get had hit in the face with a rock, which as you know that was very violent a few days ago, very, very violent. Really, willie, theres so much to unpack there. Of course, we could start with the on obvious which is donald trump is more concerned with a 9yearold girl throwing a pebble and says that, well, they should our military should take fire and shoot to kill young girls, young boys, if they throw pebbles or rocks. But there is Something Else that was going on in there. Unbelievable that in 2018 we get a president who is closing out his campaign with a strategy. You know, there are those stories about how young black men in the south in small, sleepy towns, weve seen the movies and whatever, stay away from our white women, you know . If you talk to our white women, if you get close to our white women, youre going to be lynched. You always read about that. You always saw documentaries about that. Young black men accused of being around white women. Donald trump is doing the same thing there. Men, lots of bad men coming and our women, our women dont want those the bad men i mean, it is like hes lifting it straight up out of the 1940s and 1950s in the deep south and placing it right in the middle of the campaign. For a Closing Argument in 2018, it is breath taking and it will not work. And you drew a through line from the first day of his president ial campaign in june of 2015 where he talked about rapists coming in across theboarder. His entire candidacy and now his entire presidency and now his entire run up to the Midterm Election is grounded in this immigration, in this idea of a threat coming up from the border. And gene robinson, you couple that with the idea that he declared yesterday that he will authorize these troops that he says hes going to send 15,000 to the border to fire on this imMigrant Caravan coming up from the border, if it ever makes it to the border in a couple of months, about fire on them if they throw rocks at troops. Yeah. Its kind of the bull conner strategy of trying to close out this election. One wonders, you know, where the police dogs that theyre going to set on the migrants, where are the fire hoses before you get to the bullets . It really is as joe said, its more than an echo of racist officials in the jim crow south. Its more than an echo of that. Its the same playbook. It is just astounding. You know, i im not the only one from the south here. Alesse, you would remember, as well. You would know those days. Youre probably too young to have lived through them. But its amazing that the president of the United States is running this campaign in 2018. It is just appalling. Its not going to work, but its very sad. Alesse jordan, the thing that is so striking is donald trump actually believes by talking about maur are ading brown men coming to america that somehow this is his strategy to make the gender gap smaller and shooting 9yearold girls if they throw rocks at fully armed u. S. Marines or soldiers. How clueless is this guy . Anytime donald trump wants to claim that he knows what women want, you probably should stop right then and there because he really just hasnt ever nailed it. This has been such a debacle in that the administration puts out so much false claims about whats actually going on, ignoring the root of the problem, the incredible poverty and instability teaming in these Central American companies and causing people to flee for their lives in homes of a better life. And so the whole debate gets distorted and they arent even trying to come up with a problem. Theyre just using american troops as political perhaps. And doing it right before the holidays, too. Deploying, seeking to deploy up to 15,000 troops on the u. S. Border before thanksgiving and christmas. Its just a misuse of American Forces and also for donald trump to promote the idea that they should be shooting children who are throwing rocks is just such a violation of the u. S. Military code and what any commander would ever, ever authorize a troop doing. I find it hard to believe james mattis is going to allow any of this to move forward. Obviously, the president is the commander in chief. This seems to me before he sent more people for a political ploy to the Mexican Border than are in afghanistan he would just walk away from the job. This tells me this is never going to happen. But, willie, if you look at the polls, barbara comstock, northern virginia, thats a prototypical suburban area, shes losing by 11, 12, 13, 14, her numbers have collapsed since donald trump started talking about this. Even don young is close to you know, hes in a very close race. Indiana as you showed yesterday, Joe Donnelley who was supposed to use, polls are breaking, hes 7 points ahead in that poll. We go three points out that show bill nelson ahead on top of the sitting governor in the state of florida. Theres one poll after another poll after another poll that just shows pretty remarkable results. This strategy is failing the president. Yeah. For all the places that are welcoming donald trump to rallies this weekend and want him there to help prop up a candidate, there are many, many others who want him to stay away. Hes talked about him a lot. And a new report suggests that could be a problem for his party. According to the New York Times, the president may prove to be a breaking point in tuesdays contest for educated wealthier white republicans, especially women, the kind of people joe is talking about. The times says the group likes the pro business policies, but dislikes President Trumps stance on other issues. The times points to hissen continued talk about the Migrant Caravan and birth right citizenship in the final days before the election, which this the group of voters calls an alarmist tactic. In republicanleaning districts, the party is in danger of losing its House Majority next week because mr. Trumps racially tinged nationalism has alienated these voters who once made up a dependable group of voters. Donald trump is not only disgusting and vial, hes stupid. Clearly whats going to happen here, you can see it. Its very easy to look at this election and go, oh, is this a referendum of donald trump . Do i like him, do i not like him . Or if im a republican, maybe i want him there because i like his tax cuts, but do i want some padding around him . Do i want some guardrails around him . So i think there are so many republicans, the republicans that you would describe there, that are either going to the stay home or even say, you know what . I want some guardrails against him. This is against the back drop. There was a marice poll yesterday that 80 of americans are concerned the current tone will lead to violence. People are frightened. They see an irresponsible man treating the military like theyre not human beings from a podium in the roosevelt room which is supposed to be used for policy and not for campaigns. So there is a sniff test here. And the final thing i will say is davidi ogilvee once say the consumer is not a consumer. Its your wife, its your best friend. A voter is not a voter. Its your wife, its your neighbor. Donald trump is a salesman. All of his life, with he has been selling himself. But now, as president , especially in the last several weeks and especially yesterday, standing there in the white house, he was selling fear. Fear to the country. You have the sitting president of the United States using the podium to sow division in this country. HiS Performance yesterday, i would submit the democrats ought to show it and replay it all this weekend and basically come down to tuesday, a very important day asking the question what kind of a country do you want . With trump acting like that and the country just waiting to make a decision, what kind of a country do you want . And the country, making that decision. But, again, you have seen over the past week, america is starting to make a decision. And one poll after another poll after whether youre talking about in nevada, which is going leaning democratic and arizona, most polls are going democratic. Even in texas where conservatives were mocking baito orourke a week or two ago saying he was a made for tv candidate and a loser, beto down only three points now. Were going to get to that point in a little bit in texas and a poll that was released last night. This race is getting tight. It is breaking the democrats way. If you ask why, they will tell you donald trump. Hes playing front and center, hes filling up arenas to make himself feel better. And now, guess what . Hes start to go make excuses for why republicans, why his party is going to lose. Last night, he publicly complained. Can you believe this . He complained and whined that the murder of people inside a synagogue, that shooting and the wounding of Six Police Officers in pittsburgh and 14 pipe bombs that were mailed to american leaders who just happen to be people that hes called the enemy of the people, last week, all those hurt republicans electoral chances and he was whining about this last night. The president s remarks came in the final five minutes of his columbia, missouri, Campaign Rally for gop candidate josh holly. Youll see here, trump briefly appears to catch himself in the gravity of the words in the middle of saying it because he screwed can it up this past week. But nevertheless, he doubled down. Take a look. I will tell you, we have gotten tremendous numbers, tremendous numbers of republicans are going out to vote. Now, we did have too much acts stop a momentum that was incredible. Because for seven days, nobody talked about the elections. It stopped a tremendous momentum. More importantly, we have to the take care of our people and we dont care about momentum when it comes to a disgrace like just happened to our country. But it did, nevertheless with, stop a certain momentum. Now the momentum is picking up. Hes making excuse. By the way, hes done that before where he didnt actually catch himself. But hes making excuses. Yeah, he he caught himself, but then he doubled down again. He said, well, of course, we dont care about momentum in a time like this. And then he said, but it did stop our momentum. That is appalling. But look, one reason hes so desperately trying to change the subject to immigration and to say outrageous things and can do outrageous things that well all talk about and well all focus on is that he doesnt want the subject to be pittsburgh. He doesnt want the subject to be this anticentimeter antisemantic gunman and a theory involved stopping the caravan. He doesnt want that to be what were talking about and this atmosphere that hes helped create in this country. He doesnt want the subject to be the pipe bomber or the gunman who shot two random africanamericans in louisville the day before we before the pipe bomber was arrested. He doesnt want the subject to be tax care or health care. He wants to go back to terrain where hes comfortable. And he doesnt want to talk about what democrats across america are talking about and that is health care. Rick scott is having to endure a barrage of ads in the state of florida about how hes been trying to kill obamacare which brings preexisting conditions along with it. Hes gutted medicaid funding. When democrats are talking about that issue, republicans are losing. Thats been one of the most brazen lies during this the midterm. A couple of days ago, he stood at the site at that massacre in pittsburgh. And to not be so moved by that that youre able, even, to process through your brain and say out loud that it got in the way of your momentum is an astounding lack of personal humanity and empathy that we shouldnt be shocked any more, but you can be appalled by it. And his tweets coming back from that pittsburgh materialal was a was him whining. Him whining about Public Officials not showing up, his whining about how he wasnt treated well, his whining about one thing or another while you have all of these families who have been gunned down. 11 dead while worshipping in a synagogue and hes worried about how he was treated while he was there. Still ahead, mike pence says he will put his star power up against oprahs any day of the week. Oh, dont do that. More on what the Vice President said about oprahs foret with a little will ferrell sprinkled in, as well. Plus, Rudy Giuliani offers a full endorsement of don james whose name is really john james. Were in it for the lost of the game, i guess. But kornacki, hes a superstar now. So lets talk, mr. The hot shot, about some of the polls. When we start, steve, with the most interesting, i think the one that most people would say predicts how this is going to turn out next week better than anything else, theres another poll out that shows Donald Trumps Approval Ratings dipping down into the low 40s after he was experiencing 45, 46, 47 percent last week. The latest poll has his Approval Rating down to 41, disapproval 52 , gallop heading back down to 40 from the previous week. This at the end of the day is what you and republicans and democrats are probably looking at the most closely, isnt it, as far as how big a wave might be. Yeah. Theres a big difference between election day going into the mid 40s or low 30s. The average this morning, if you average every poll thats out there together, theyve been doing sort of a daily trend like with that. A week ago today, it was 44. 7. 44. 7 a week ago was basically the High Water Mark of the trump presidency. You have to go back to the early weeks to find him matching that number. That was a week ago. Its come down essentially a point in a week. I suspect were going to get a batch of new polls. A lot of media organizations in the closing weekend before in the midterms. So i suspect were going to get a couple in the next few days that are really going to kind of set that number and give us a sense where we are heading into election day. Lets go to texas. I wanted to tell my conservative friends a week ago who are mocking beto orourke for getting wiped out against ted cruz that they were sounding just like democrats who were mocking republicans for suggesti suggesting donald trump could win in 2016. This is a big uphill climb and this is only one race, but this is reason to believe that orourke is getting much closer to ted cruz and ted cruz or the Republican Party would like. And what youre seeing there, that is a good approximately for beto, orourke. But hes still behind in that roll. I have to say, there have been more polls out of texas than any other state. Every poll ive seen has shown ted cruz leading the Texas Senate Race. Its close enough in each situation where if theres more energy on one side than we thought, if theres less energy than we thought on election day, there could be a surprise. But the totality of the polling weve been seeing out of texas still suggests cruzs lead there somewhere i would say in the mid single digits. You have trend lines that appear to be breaking in the democrats direction. But a lot of these races, indiana yesterday, 7 points. That may be an outlier. But steve brought up florida. Weve got two or three polls out of the Florida Senate race. Texas has shown ted cruz ahead by a number of points. Every poll that weve seen hately has shown bill nelson ahead of rick scott. Steve, look at this here. This is a margin of error race if you look at that poll. Nelson up two points for rick scott. Theres a st. Pete poll, as well, right here. Same spread. Two points for bill nelson over governor rick scott there. This feels to me like a tossup. What does it look like to you . Yes, it does. I think the most encouraging thing for democrats is there was a sense in florida that after the hurricane down there, just given the handling of the Natural Disaster in florida by the governor, by rick scott, that there might be a Political Boost for him from that. There was polling that shows a three to one margin of floridans approving of how he handled that. Sometimes you see in politics when a state goes through a Natural Disaster youll see a bounce for a governor. I think for democrats looking at this polling youre not seeing evidence there that this has changed the equation in scotts favor. The other thing is the nature of midterm years. When youre the Opposition Party candidate in a Midterm Election year, its a good place to be. Its one thing when youre Heidi Heitkamp in north dakota and trump won your state by 36 points. Thats a lot of political gravity to overcome. But when youre bill nelson in florida, trump won your state by two points. Theyre both red states on paper, but this is not nearly as red state as some of those other democrats are in. So another fascinating race in the southeast. The latest poll has the race for georgia governor separated by. 2 of a point. Stacey abrahams is at 46. 9 and brian kemp at 46. 7 with 5 undecided and metz polling under 2 . Former president barack obama is set to campaign for stacey rain rams on saturday and yesterday she had oprah who knocked on doors urging people to vote. Hi. Oh, my god hey, denise. How are you . Im wonderful. How are you . Good. Surprise, surprise. Surprise. I am shocked. Surprise. So im canvassing for stacey abrahams. Yes. Are you voting for her . For anybody here who has an ancestor who didnt have the right to vote and you are choosing not to vote wherever you are in this state, in this country, you are dishonoring your family. You are disrespecting and disregarding their legacy, their suffering and their dreams when you dont vote. So honor your legacy. Honor your legacy. Honor your right to citizenship in this which is the greatest country in the world. Stacey abrams being bank rolled by hollywood liberals, sending their support into the state and some of them come into the state. Like i heard oprah is in town today. And i heard will ferrell was going door to door the other day. Well, United States like to remind stacey of observe ra and wi. Im kind of a big deal, too. A long wind up for mike pence. That was a long, long whirly bird wind up. It really was. So gene robinson, the guns dont get much bigger in the Democratic Party than Oprah Winfrey and obviously president obama going in today for stacey abrams. How does this shake out . Does she make history as the first avenue can american female governor in this state . Its right there tied at 47 . I believe in georgia you have to give 50 , too. Theres a runoff. Thats a possible outcome. If you look at those numbers, it looks like a likely outcome. But im watching the key demographic to me in this race is africanamerican women. Africanamerican women elected doug jones in alabama next door in the special election. Voting in numbers greater than their weight in the population. About 14 of the alabama voting population i think and they were 17 of the electorate. Africanamerican women who are a bigger share of the electorate in georgia. If they vote in larger than expected numbers, and theres some indications that they might, thats very, very good for stacey abrams. And she could pull off what would be a monumental milestone victory. Every year, there are a couple of real shocks, especially in the house that nobody saw coming. In 1994, tom foley, then the speaker of the house, its happened time and again. A couple of races weve been talking about this week, steve keen in western iowa, nobody believes he would have a competitive race this year. Never have. But also a poll that just came out yesterday really surprises me. The alaska large race, don young, that guy is a chairman. He had been there forever when i first came in about 25 years ago. And you actually have, in the state of alaska, about as red as it has gotten over the past 50 years in the state of alaska. You have gal vin ahead of don young in a poll with less than a week to go. That in itself is shocking. There is a ledgend thats built up around don young in alaska. This is the biggest jam hes been in in quite some time. Hes a polarizing figure in alaska. His unfavorable rating that poll sits at 44 . Gal vin, t galvin, running against him, shes not as well defined. Keep in mind, in alaska, its not just an atlarge house race. Theyve had a wild situation in the governors race where the independent governor backed out of the race. Mark baggich running for governor on the democratic side. Youve got a close race for governor there. Alaska is one of those states, it is deep red, it is a very conservative state. Its a very independent state. Very independent. It was willing to elect an independent governor for years ago. Its done that a couple times before. That might be a factor here, as well. If you watch the speech, she so articulates what the country is about, she tells the story about a pastors father who walked six miles to one school, was denied to vote and six miles to another and finally six miles to another and he was told it was too late. Just a reminder who we are. I hope between now and tuesday, she is the only person we see out there. Please, celebrity webs stay home. Yes, amen. Oprah with, you go wherever you want to know. Well remember back, willie, during the campaign in 2000, i think it was late 2015, barack obama was having some a little bit of trouble gaining transaction. And oprah went down and had a massive rally in north carolina. Im not going to say that wases the turning point, but that was one of those markers where Oprah Winfrey actually, in that rally, helped barack obama in ways that i think stayed with him through the next couple of contests. Donald trump was thrown a softball about Oprah Winfrey last night and he said, i love oprah. I was on the last week of her show. I love oprah. I think shes great. Thats how you know how powerful oprah is right there. That was impressive that he was on the last week of the oprah show. No question. Willie, thats kind of like what fight doctor freddie perchuko said about riddick bo during the olympics. Riddick had spasms of liucidity. That was a spasm of lucidity, oprah, wait, no, cant talk bad about her. Steve kornacki is a household name. Did you know, joe, the number one costume this year for halloween in america . Steve kornacki. The exit polling just came in. Good to see you. Wardrobe isnt tough. Still ahead this morning, newly revealed emails from roger stone raising more questions about a possible connection between the 2016 Trump Campaign and wikileaks. The New York Times Michael Schmidt joins us with his latest recording and Daniel Goldman says Robert Mueller is on the ballot this election, too. The new Capital One Savor card. Earn 4 cash back on dining and 4 on entertainment. Now when you go out, you cash in. Whats in your wallet . Newly revealed emails obtained by the New York Times show how roger stone portrayed himself to top Trump Campaign officials as a conduit to weekky leaks in 2015. Joining us now with more on that scoop, New York Times reporter Michael Schmidt, also with us, a fellow at the time Brennen Center for justice and an msnbc legal analyst, Daniel Goldman. Guys, good morning. Good to see you both. Michael, let me start with you and your reporting. Roger stones name has always been out there as a guy who either had a link to wikileaks and passed it on to the Trump Campaign or wanted to portray himself as being a player in the middle of the campaign and suggesting he had a link to wikileaks. Which is it . Was stone simply someone who was boasting and bragging to give him importance so people would Pay Attention to him or was he truly a cut out, truly the person who was communicating with wikileaks and moving information back to the campaign and communicating with them . That is what these emails show. And the campaign was not so quick, necessarily, to embrace stone. One of the emails, saying he had Better Things to do than talk to stone. Bannon following up with stone to find out if he knew anything about an upcoming dump of emails. But that is the real tension of the stone story and we still dont have clarity yet. Stone is under all sorts of things relating to his conduct. At the heart of it is collusion. And was he the person passing information back and how high into the campaign did that information go . Its clear that bannon turned to him thinking he was someone representing himself as someone in touch with assange. Dan, what is there from the u. S. Attorneys Office Prospect . Looking at this story, collusion, it would seem steve bannon has isolated himself from any charges. What do i think michael and his colleagues put their finger on it. They are looking more at stone for what we call derivative crimes. Lying to the allows about it. Maybe obstruction of justice. Whats the obstruction . I dont know. Thats what were trying to figure out. Whether its something that flowed after as part of the investigation, is what im getting at. If roger stone merely knew that Julian Assange was going to release emails thats probably not enough to charge him with conspiring with a Foreign Agent to interfere with the election. He would have to take some act to help or assist foreigners to interfere. He would have to take some act to help Julian Assange release those emails or do Something Else. I think what michael and his colleagues are getting at is what he said. Its a very difficult question for mueller to drill down on exactly what was stones involvement. Ill say this given all the grand jury activity about roger stone, one has to believe that they are preparing an indictment for him. Daniel, let me ask you quickly. I understand that if hes just passing along information thats one thing. Isnt there a possibility of a conspiracy. That information hes passing along, lets say john possible defendanto is in the barrel next week and he calls up bannon and says this is coming up next week. Even if hes not putting that out hes giving the Trump Campaign information, hes conspiring to help coordinate their message. Its about as big, that sort of information is about as big and powerful as information you can give in the middle of a Political Campaign. Is there a possibility that he violated a federal crime in doing that and helping the Trump Campaign coordinate the message with russian agents . Absolutely theres a possibility. Part of it goes what his intent was. Was he relation the information with the knowledge and intent the Trump Campaign will use it and use the emails to influence the election knowing that the source came from someone from, you know, nonamerican. Im not saying roger stone doesnt have some exposure being involved in a conspiracy indictment, as you points out, but im saying when these emails that we saw in the times reporting, it doesnt get Robert Mueller far enough in and of themselves. It could be helpful. It shows, obviously, that roger stone had some connection to Julian Assange, but i think he would need more and not to say there isnt more its just that we dont know that yet on the outside. Michael, two things about this great story, also reporting here, really struck me. It was one that roger stone just didnt offer steve bannon anything that was actually new, and then two, his biggest push was the Conspiracy Theory about bill clintons illegitimate son and roger stone was pushing that as something that should be an emphasis of trump surrogates. Does this actually shed any new light on if roger stone actually is part of the genius of stone you dont know if hes actually just up to his neck and sinking or if its all just one big farce and hes been hoodwinking us all. Does this give us any additional insight . Theres something very trumpian about there where mueller is being forced to investigate whether stone was essentially lying himself to other members of the campaign to increase his importance. And was he simply making this up to show that he had more information that he did to give him a higher currency in trumps campaign. I believe the real currency was what information you had to share and how could you help move things forward. And the question here is whether stone was basically doing things to overstate what he knew. And now mueller has to go back and say well was he lying at the time. Did eli to congress about this . Of course, its wrapped up in lies. On top of that you have stone just earlier this week telling the Washington Post there were no communications between him and other members he was a member of the Trump Campaign but with members of the Trump Campaign about Julian Assange and two days later this coming out. Clearly was in touch with the Campaign Chairman and now here another misstatement, another inaccurate thing that raises question what was really going on and what is the real truth here. Roger stone, in an interview with michael, he says in the piece mr. Stone insisted he did nothing more than posture, blufr based on the wikileaks. Robert mueller is on the ballot. If democrats take over the house it would change the dynamic . Change things tremendously because of what we can expect to see coming down the line from Robert Mueller. I think most people do not expect that the president will be indicted no matter what the evidence is. But there will be a report, there is required to be a report to the attorney general who is overseeing the investigation. Right now thats Rod Rosenstein. If the republicans maintain control of both houses, and particularly in light of the House Republicans efforts to undermine this investigation, you have to think that donald trump will be very emboldened to put someone very loyal to him to replace Rod Rosenstein or jeff sessions, whom are both rumored to be on the chopping block. Then the congress can take great measures to protect trump from the investigation, through the attorney generals office. So things like rejecting or denying indictments or subpoenas. Not disseminating the report or at least dishe is m in partial. Shutting down the investigation because of this theory that doesnt have a lot of basis in law but does say the president can do whatever he wants as head of the executive branch, including firing james comey to avoid the investigation. So there are a lot of things that the House Republicans in congress can protect from the president during the investigation. The Intel Committee would look different. They have subpoena power. They can subpoena that report. Great reporting. Full piece at New York Times. Steve king is facing pressure in iowa. Well show you his eruption yesterday when his views on immigration were compared those with the pittsburgh shooting suspect. And how twitter imagined Donald Trumps dire warnings surrounding that slow motion caravan of migrants. At this moment large well organized caravans of migrants are marching towards our southern border. Some people call it an invasion. Its like an invasion. I know you want to leave me for schwab, but before you do that, you should meet our newest team member, tecky. Im tecky. I can do it all. Go ahead, ask it a question. Tecky, can you offer low costs and awardwinning Wealth Management with a satisfaction guarantee, like schwab . Sorry. Tecky cant do that. Schwabbb calling schwab. We dont have a satisfaction guarantee, but we do have tecky im tecky. I ca. Are you getting low costs and awardwinning Wealth Management . If not, talk to schwab. They want to throw rocks at our military. Our military fights back. Were going consider. I told them consider a rifle. When they throw rocks like they did at the Mexico Military police i say consider it a rifle. So, 11 people who were murdered in a synagogue on saturday, werent killed by kids throwing rocks. They were killed by bullets. Were going to talk more about the president s false equestion valence when talking about the threat of violence at the border. Its friday, november 2nd. Mika has the morning off. Along with willie and me we have the legendary mike barnacle. Donnie deutsche still with us. Former aid to the george w. Bush white house elise jordan. And cohost and executive producer of showtimes the circus, John Heilemann. Jonathan swan and cofounder an managing editor of the beat d. C. , tiffany cross. Willie, i was going to talk about Donny Deutsch being a legendary ad man and marketsing guru but he showed a picture last hour that i couldnt shake from my mind. I fear it may haunt me for the better part of the weekend. If youre having breakfast push the bowl aside for just a moment here. Thats Donny Deutsch, guys, no easy way to say that. Thats Donny Deutsch in 1980 on the match game. I won the match game with betty white. I have my epstein from welcome back kotter. Did you get dates during this period . Amazing. I think they were pity dates. People felt bad for me. Sad part that was the peak of my tv career. You won five grand that day in 1980. With a 43yearold betty white. Joe, just a little escapism. And so now, of course, willie hes evolved from that to wearing tight black baby gap tshirts. So quite an evolution p. M. So let me, John Heilemann, let me go to you. We had the great Steve Kornacki, the legendary Steve Kornacki who has become a national icon, appearing on murphy brown and kids dressing like him on halloween. Donald trumps polls going down 41 . Beto, after being mocked by relentless now only three points behind ted cruz. Don young who has been in congress in alaska forever now down by a point. You got in pennsylvania bob casey up by 15 points. Its hard to find a florida poll that bill nelson is not ahead in. Gillum doing very well. Tim russerts words still ring true its florida. How florida goes is how this race goes. Where are we now five days before the election i think youre seeing the trends you guys have been talking about all morning is evident in a lot of places. You look at the house race, it feels like and again you pointed to Barbara Comstocks polling where shes down like 12, 15 points. Thats a bellwether district. Any place where there was antitrump sentiment and by that i mean, you know obviously in districts that Hillary Clinton prevailed in 2016 but where there was even a germ of antitrump sentiment its been inflamed by the president s, by the combination of the horrific acts of last week, the president s complicity, the suggestion hes complicit and his behavior in the aftermath. Every day he does another desperate flailing he makes the problem worse for any republican who already was saying and many of them were in those contested districts, please mr. President , dont come to my district. For a lot of republicans that are vulnerable, their attitude is keep donald trump away from my district. But now isnt of physically going to campaign there hes still presents in those districts because hes on television, on twitter and every place else all day long doing precisely the things that they dont want their vote toers rs reminded of. Its not that hes just focused on the senate, hes making the situation worse every day in those house districts, its as if hes in those districts making the situation worse. The other thing ive noticed, joe, and we talked about this for a while. Ive been out all week as you see the democratic bench being emptied. You see barack obama, Oprah Winfrey and also cory booker, Elizabeth Warren, bernie sanders, every big name democrat is now out on the playing field, leaving it out there, going, campaigning around the country. The most interesting thing about it, i was with Elizabeth Warren all day yesterday, cory booker and bob menendez earlier in the week. None of them are talking about donald trump. They are all they are letting donald trump have the mega phone. They understand that the antitrump sentiment is out there and that at this point the best antitrump spokesman is donald trump. Elizabeth warren did not mention Donald Trumps name once in two events and that is an incredible change because democrats are most unified against donald trump. Now they are like let the president make the case against the president and were just going talk about health care and other policy issues where democrats have an advantage. Elise, youve done so many focus groups over the past year or two. And it is fascinating that donald trump and Donald Trumps campaign, he hasnt been talking about the economy, he hasnt been talking about taxes, he hasnt been talking about tissues you expect him to talk about the most. Hes making up stories about caravans, throwing pebbles, hes saying hes going to rewrite the constitution with president ial signature. Why is he doing that and based on all your focus groups, how is that going to play in Middle America . Joe, we know donald trump simply has no selfcontrol. He has no impulse control. He cant stop himself from doing pretty much what he wants at any given moment. As you pointed out, in the fall of 2016 for a week or so he was able to control himself when he was slipping down in the polls and you could see the correlation when you started to see an uptick again. This midterm race is a different beast in that so many voters already have absorbed Donald Trumps negatives. They dont expect him to be empathetic at a time of a National Tragedy like the pittsburgh tragedy. They dont expect him to say the right things and comfort them. It comes down to a local helpful who these candidates are and the candidate quality and you see republicans who, before i left in the last three weeks going across america with ashcroft in America Research group and focusing on different battleground districts i did think there would be more frustration with reluctant trump voters that we spoke with back in 2016. Instead people have dug in a little bit and i dont think his negatives necessarily impacting the field, at least among independents who knows to vote for him in 2016 and republicans who reluctantly supported him too. Whats interesting, donnie, is this election, somebody told me the other day, republicans are going to outperform because they are embarrassed to say they are voting for trump. Donald trumps name is not on the ballot. You dont have to admit to a live pollster youll be voting for donald trump. So its actually a bunch of people who are running, who have, unfortunately, tried to imitate donald trump a little bit too much, but you know weve seen time and again, that brand magic was not transferrable from reagan to republicans who got pounded in two midterms. Wasnt transferrable from obama to democrats who got pounded in two midterms. And ive yet to find somebody who can do the sort of egregious things that donald trump does politically and live to tell about it. Its interesting, you wonder because as you talked earlier in the show, his Closing Argument in 2016 was not about him, it was pointing at the other guy, pointing at hillary and how it is about him. The answer was teed up in an interview the other day, arent you concerned about the violence that your rhetoric causes with the media. He basically said no because it works. Donald trump is a creature of habit. If you worked with donald trump or before donald trump always his explanation of why he did something it worked. He does not have the cognitive ability to relook at this situation and go no, no. Yes he explained to you once why did i do the birther . It worked. Nobody is going to talk donald trump out of what hes doing and remind him that no, sir, this time it wont work and actually didnt work the last time. Hes stuck. Hell continue to be stuck and go down in flames as a result. Willie, again when the electorate is talking about the enemies of donald trump because donald trump is not conservative, hes anti, antiliberal. When donald trump talks about Elizabeth Warren or Hillary Clinton or get them talk being about Dianne Feinstein or cory booker, the democrats that are standing in front of kavanaugh, judge kavanaugh, now justice kavanaugh, donald trump wins. But since the Kavanaugh Hearing has been over, donald trump has worked 24 7 to make this campaign about him and when people are talking about donald trump, things dont go well for him politically. Its interesting to hear johns reporting. Its consistent with things i heard and read which is that democrats are staying away from him. They believe he can do the damage to himself and hitting on health care which time and again in polling is the number one concern of voters. Largely those democratic voters are ignoring stories like the caravan but the president continues to talk about it. Yesterday in the roosevelt room in the white house describing his idea to send troops to the United States border to stop a caravan of people traveling by foot now somewhere under 1,000 miles away which could arrive sometime in the next two months if it arrives at all. At this very moment large well organized caravans of migrants are marching towards our southern border. Some people call it an invasion. Its like an invasion. They are violently overrun the Mexican Border. You saw that two days ago. These are tough people in many cases. A lot of young men. Strong men. And a lot of men that maybe we dont want in our country. We have no idea who they are. All we know is they are pretty tough people when they can blast through the mexican military and Mexican Police. They are pretty tough people. Even mexico said wow these are tough people. I dont want them in our country. And women dont want them in our country. Women want security. Men dont want them in our country. But the women do not want them. Women want security. You look at what the women are looking for. They want to have security. Anybody throwing stones, rocks like they did to mexico and the mexican military, Mexican Police where they badly hurt police and soldiers of mexico, we will consider that a firearm. Because theres not much different when you get hit in the face with a rock, which as you know was very violent a few days ago, very, very violent. Tiffany cross a lot to unpack. I know you appreciate the president of the United States speaking for all women and what they want in this country. I would point as he talks about, you know, organizing these troops and allowing them to fire on people as they come across the border, i want to quote general mark dempsey who was the general of joint chiefs he says a wasteful of deployment of overstretched marines would be made much worse if they use force. The general say those troops will not fire on them. What did you make of the president S Performance yesterday . Let me say this. Willie asked elise why is the president doing this . We know why. It worked in 2016. Race is the number one issue for his hard core base. Theres data to back this up. Three political scientists actually studied this and found that the overwhelming majority of people who voted for barack obama and switched to trump voters were people who held hostile views on race and lesser degree on women. So you have racism and sexism driving this president s voter base. President trump has redefined what electability means. We have to start changing our dialect when we talk about that. Sometimes too often people say electability that means appealing to white voters. Weve seen in this election cycle maybe electability means appealing to Younger Voters, people of color, people who dont like donald trump, people concerned of the direction of this country. Hes highlighted that despite efforts to suppress the vote across the country. You saw its having the opposite effect. North dakota, nafr americans are voting overwhelmingly. When you have people who didnt know who Andrew Gillum was, there are a lot of people who follow that campaign consistently. When you have people clutch their pearls every time donald trump says something theres a lot of us that recognize the behavior. We recognize this behavior. This is a challenge to voters. There is no swing voter any more. If youre a person on the line at this point, i dont believe that person exists. You cant be confused between a brian kemp and a stacy abrams. These are very clear lines that this president is forcing candidates to draw. Were seeing that play out in numbers across the country. When you saw oprah come out yesterday and juxtapose her message that with pence. Pence has raised 70 million. Has done over 100 events for people. You do have to look at the different messages and potential who are supporting this candidate they have to be honest. Joe made the point donald trump gets people talking about Dianne Feinstein and Elizabeth Warren, let me tell you there are plenty of people in Middle America who never heard of Dianne Feinstein or Elizabeth Warren but hear a president who say its okay to feel that way because i feel that way. That gives people license to vote for this president under the guise of racism and we have to be bold enough to call that out. Isnt now the focus, part of it, on the democrats in terms of their survivability in terms of a political party. If they cant get their vote out tuesday, given all of whats happening, all of whats being said, i mean its like strike being out three times, three batters in a row with the bases loaded, what do you hear among democrats about the fact that they have to get their vote out. They havent been very good in the past. They have to get their vote out. Its an interesting question. I was having lunch yesterday with a very well respected democratic strategist who is advising one of the key 2020 candidates and he was worried about the early vote totals that are coming in and also feeling that there is a soft enthusiasm for voting among Younger Voters and theres a real concern they will not come to the polls and a lot of older voters on both sides. If everybody stays home given what weve seen and everything that the president has said and done over the last year and everything that we know that Younger Voters when you survey them that they think and feel if they dont turn out to vote, i dont know whats going to be the thing that does it. Whats the Tipping Point pre2020 that triggers them to actually turn up and go to the polls . Nbcs polling ever millennials is not promising in terms ever their turn out but well wait and see what happens on tuesday. Thank you both. Still ahead new polling shows beto orourke closing the gap against ted cruz in texas and hes been hitting this topic hard. He wants to send more than 5,000 soldiers to this community and other communities of the border, demeaning the service and sacrifice of more than 20,000 Border Patrol agents who do an incredibly effective job of keeping the border secure and our communities safe. I want to make sure that we dont give in to that paranoia and dont submit to that fear. Ahead, tom brokaw joins the conversation. At that same event the congressman got into an exchange when a man began questioning him about his ideology. He keeps talking. This is over. If you dont stop talking. Im leaving. I think hes given his answer. Sir. Stop it. Sir thats its. Youre done. Joining us now nbc news Senior Correspondent tom brokaw also the president and ceo of National Urban league. Tom, let me start with you, 30,000foot view of where we are now four days out from this Midterm Election. Youve seen a couple of these. This one is a bit different. I must say it may come down to this for donald trump its my way or the highway and thats where the two parties are. Democrats also say we have Health Care Plan. The Health Care Plan we have now put in place by the democrats, you dont see a lot of detail in the House Democratic plan at this point. Steven king, its interesting for the first time the sioux city Editorial Board has come out against him. In that corner of iowa where i spent a lot of time i was once the weatherman on channel 4. Well find that footage shortly. Sponsored by the cab corn. I held up a corn cob at point. Theyve been with him for a long time. He has a lot of outrageous things to say. They are getting to him with that last appearance we saw. This is very disconcerting. The country says we got to learn to work together. We have an election under way that will divide us more. If democrats do win the house, for example and trump stays in power were going to go through a very difficult next two years until we get to the president ial election. The country will be at war with each other. I was listening to some people in missouri yesterday and they say, Claire Mccaskill is an elitist. Shes fighting for her life. Shes a democrat. Everything has been polarized and when i look at the big picture, social media has a lot to do with it. You can put anything out there that you want to. Doesnt have to have any merit in terms of truth or where it came from. Once it hits people say oh, my god you cant believe what i read about x, y or z. The country has to come to grips about reality who we are and where we want to go. Whats at stake from where youre it issing from the National Urban league. What are you looking at on tuesday . A couple of things. Good morning torch. Number one, i think this election is a gut check election. Its not simply about this sort of laundry list ever Public Policy issues. When i move around the country its more about what kind of a nation we want to have, one thats civil, one that works on issues that are of concern to people, one that practices and promotes hate speech and division and tries to castigate people. Thats whats at stake. The effect, number two, the effect of the president is to, one, yes, energize his base, but hes energizing the antitrump base probably to a greater extent. What ive witnessed in this election cycle is there are more people, more communitybased people, more organizations, church groups, faith groups and others doing their own thing to turn out the vote. Doing their own thing. Not hooked to a candidate. Not hooked to a p. A. C. Not hooked to a political party. But people who are creating circle of friends. People who are walking doortodoor. Ive been in wisconsin, ive been in pennsylvania, im here in louisiana, illinois on saturday, listening to people, moving around and getting a sense. Its a gut check election and i think well have a historic turn out. We got to understand the country is at this point in history where there are deep and fundamental issues about whether we want to go forward or whether we think the future of america is a return to yesterday. Thats how i would frame it. I think theres a growing coalition that says weve got to move forward and its got to be with everyone who wants to view america as a place that is for everyone. On this question of whats at stake, John Heilemann brought with him an exclusive look of this sundays the circus where john sat down with ambassador andrew young to get his take on what this years vote means for the country going forward. When you look at what President Trump is doing and the way republicans are running across the country, its like they are closing on fear. Its about the caravan. Its about being afraid of change. Do you see that strategy . Do you think it will work . I see that strategy, and i really believe that the American People are better than that and wiser than that. Georgia has been, i think the most reasonable progressive of the southern states. And this election is a referendum on whether were ready to move into the future. Tom, i ask you, just because we were talking we were talking a lot about Oprah Winfrey, stacy abrams, andrew young sitting in the state of georgia. Obviously he made the comment at the end about his state. A lot is pinned on stacy abrams why democrats are focused on whether she will win or not. Its a close race. Might be a run off. You have to get too 50 in georgia. Give us a sense how that are racing turns out, the fact that were talking about a potential first africanamerican woman governor winning in georgia, thats within reach, Andrew Gillum looking like he is the favorite now in florida. What does that say about the state of Race Relations in our politics at a time when its Donald Trumps america and yet were seeing these signs that there could be, yet again more progress in this area. Any number of indicators about how were moving up on race, this is a perfect example of it. I lived in the south. I lived in atlanta when andy young was at his peak of power and when you look at Television Commercials these days, you know, the American Free enterprise system says we got black consumers out there. They show up every where and they are middle class, upper class as well. We see it in our own business. Thats a big statement if somebody one, who is africanamerican in georgia a statewide race. No question about it. Another race that people arent talking about is the nature race in mississippi. If former secretary of agriculture mike espy makes it to the runoff which is 99 likely theres a runoff between the republican appointed by the governor and mike espy, he would be the first africanamerican senator from the state since reconstruction, but you havent seen National Democratic organizations really put the effort intoe that race when it is a senate race and i think that theres more opportunity there than National Democrats are giving. Theres a lot of stuff going on, frankly, off the screen, if you will. In communities and other places around the country a lot of people are trying to do desperately to find ways to bring us together. Andy is part of the thing called operation hope in which they organized an effort to teach Financial Literacy to poor black people. They have banks working with them to do that. Once you get beyond what were always talking about, theres a lot of stuff beginning to happen. Tom friedmans new book is about people checking their Party Registration at the door on saturday mornings and saying whats in the best interest ever lancaster, pennsylvania. What do we do we bring this back together again. Its that moment that people have to concentrate on. Still a trailing movement because were consumed by what were seeing here every day and across the country. I want to make a point about stacy stacy abrams and Andrew Gillum, these candidates who are africanamerican who are doing two things. One they are inspiring young voters, inspiring people of color but also demonstrating the ability to appeal to large segments of the White Communities in their states. And this is the new, if you will, approach which is the ability to build these multiracial coalitions which i think will be the basic fundamental need in all of our politics, one will not be able to win major elections by a polarization strategy. Thats why im watching these races very closely because they are doing two things. They are motivating new voters, on the cusp of making history bust appealing to voters who traditional thinking was that africanamerican candidates cannot appeal to. The last thing i would add in the case of this stacy abrams and of course this ben jealous and Andrew Gillum these are very seasoned leaders. These are not newcomers. These are not people who showed up yesterday. They tybee island in the vineyards and paid their dues. Always appreciate your perspective. Meteorologist tom brokaw, thank you for being here. If those who persecute journalists get away with their crimes and allowed to return to business as usual, it only invites more of the same. Your last chance to Say Something interesting. Ill try. The president s meds need to be rebalanced. We were talking beverly these Midterm Elections in a lot of different ways. The thing i think that is the most undercovered story right now because were focused on the house and the wave is the governorships where democrats could, if not run the table, could score some huge victories in places that trump won two years ago. Its not just florida and georgia, but you look at pennsylvania, ohio, michigan, wisconsin, iowa, all could end up with democratic governors and then you go to places like south dakota and kansas which are also within reach for democrats and in addition to the blue states. Could you have a very big nights for democrats in governorships in biggest states, biggest electoral vote tallies and thats going to matter. That could be a big win for democrats as well as taking over the house. Remember big guy was on johnnie carson. We know you got to go. Well show that picture of you again. Natasha let me start with you to establish the extent of the problem here. The department of justice says there has already been meddling in the 2018 Midterm Elections. By whom and to what extent . The russians yet again. We saw this laid out just a couple of weeks ago in a new charging document saying that the russians have essentially doubled their budget in the beginning of this year and into the summer in order to influence the election by a massive social Media Campaign and troll operation, the kind we saw in 2016. So this is just more of the same, essentially, but what it shows is that the russians have really if we thought that they were going to be deterred following the 2016 election then we were wrong. Now we have not seen the kind of hacking that we saw during 2016. Weve not seen, of course, the hack, big hack on the dnc. Weve seen hacking of select Democratic Candidates by the russians in this year but the kind of campaign that they are running now is not one thats going to be exactly the same, right, as what they did in 2016. The russians are too smart to run the same playbook. If anything they will do something at the last minute that could prove perhaps more immediately consequential than a broad social Media Campaign. What we know is they have continued their efforts to influence voters on twitter, on facebook, by youtube, for example and theres no sign that they are going to stop doing that. Doing that. We also know the iranians surprisingly have been act 95 this space. Again, we havent seen any hacking from them. But we have seen a social Media Campaign. So. So, kathleen, we know from american intelligence what the russians were after in the 2016 election. I want to put the thumb on the trail for donald trump. What does russia want out of a Midterm Election . What is the objective here . Anything that goes wrong in our election system potentially can be used for propaganda against us. We should watch for appeals by trolls saying you can vote from home, when, in fact you cant the russians did that in 2016. The french election, they came in at the very last minute. In that case the media were responsible in france and didnt public sized the hacked content, because they couldnt verify it. We need to worry they did penetrate our election infrastructure in 20 skerngs Senate Intelligence con 2016, Senate Intelligence says said they could alter it. Secretary of state i hope you are watching. The secretary of state addressed china. Is there any evidence you see china is meddling in time around . China is active, theyre playing a long lo longterm game, the clear and present danger is russia. And i would add their playbook has not changed. They are not just using bots and social media with their own propaganda, theyre working through third parties, those kop opted unconsciously and those unaware they are beingulesed by russian agents. I would echo, this concern, we are entering a danger zone right now where the potential for material theyve hacked to drop in the next 72 hours is quite high. Kathleen, we do know, obviously, that the russians hacked into the election in 2016. As you said, down to the lowest level voting registration numbers and names. But do we know for a fact . Can we know that they actually influenced votes in specific areas of the country . I make the case in the book cyber war, that the hacked content as used by our media possibly is what was counted in the drop in perception Hillary Clinton was hacked as president. Because hacked content was used in the last two debates, we also associate a finding in our polling data, she says one thing in public, another in public, not forthright, which is kin with the that hacked comment in the debate. Not only do we attribute that in the debate to russians that exchange, that is a predicted likelihood to vote vote. Can we make a probable case, . Yes. If their disinformation afthed james comeys decision affected james comeys decision. There is information that plus aably suggests they may have in pennsylvania and wisconsin. Natasha, elise jordan here. This is a separate vote topic about disinformation. You covered a pretty crazy story all week in the geniuses who was trying to entrap Robert Mueller. That went really well. What can you tell us about that as to story . Reporter right, so its very complicated, but in a nutshell, a woman claiming to have been contacted by two gop essentially conspiracy theorists asking if they owe owe asking if she would be willing to make up a Sexual Assault allegations against Robert Mueller in exchange for roughly 50,000 reached out to journalists a couple weeks ago alerting them to this scheme. Journalists were not able to confirm her identity. So it kientd of went uncorroborated until this week when the special counsel released a rare statement saying they had referred the matter to the fbi for further investigation, because they take these allegations that women are essentially being paid to make up stories against the special counsel seriously, especially eight days before midterms. Fast forward to yesterday when these two again conspiracy theorists activists held a press conference in virginia, where they claim to have a woman, they named her, who is willing to come forward and issue that ages herself. It fell apart. There were inconsistencies in the story. She apparently got on the next flight to wherever and refused to show up. But this whole thing has kind of been an example of how the plots to smear mueller by any means possible is still much active and its gotten to the point where its not just about saying that hes on a witch hunt, now it about smearing his character. The fbi is on that case as well. Brett, i want to ask you about a tweet you pout out a couple days ago about meddling. You wrote this, the trumps information response to foreign operations continues to be too slow, too small a and far too superficial to detect russia, iran or oughts. Knowing everything we know about a what happened in 2016, you have laid out for montht and years now, why has it been slow . Why arent the levers of government moving to prevent this . Well, let me first say we have done nuts to nothing to combat this information in the last two years. Why in. Well the reason i think is a lack of leadership, starting from the white house. But i also point the finger at mike pompeo. Congress issued a National Defense authorization act that says they have to run point on this information. Pompeo told congress in the summer, weve got it covered this week the state Department Said they only have written a check for a very small relatively small am of money to deal with this problem. We are woefully under prepared. I fear that both in the next several days, but then as we head into the president ial campaign, weve got no defensive capabilities. Astonishing more hasnt been done. Thank you all. Still ahead on morning joe, the latest polling in the key races, including the race for georgia governor as close as ever and oprah campaigned there yesterday. We dont get paid fully for that military, which ill be talking to south korea about. We have already dispatched for the border the United States military and they will do the job. Theyre setting up right now. And theyre preparing. Welcome back to morning joe. Its friday, november 2nd. Still with us. We have legendary msnbc contributor mike barnacle. We have Donny Deutsche. He was on the dating. Former aid to the white house elise jordan and former Pulitzer Prize journal it eugene robinson. Willie geist, donald trump is making things up left and right. Hes not even good at it. Everybody knows hes lying. Apparently if you look at these polls, he is doing nothing but damaging the republicans who need him to stay out of the way and be quiet the most, which is again i think one of the great insights. We will have Steve Schmidt on earlier, he said earlier this week, hey, you know, donald trump won, in part, in 2016 because he knew he had to stay out of the way the last ten days. When people were talking about Hillary Clinton the weather, donald trump is doing well. When they talk about donald trump, his numbers are going down. Willie, i think hes kind of forgotten that strategy. Yeah. Whats the option of staying out of the way . Hes doing two rallies a day, now going forward, one in missouri last night. He gave a speech on immigration yesterday a sharply worded speech announcing two new immigration policies using the roosevelt room as his backdrop. He vowed to hold undocumented immigrants in detention until they can be deported. He announced a plan to sign an executive order automatically denying asylum to migrants who try to enter the u. S. Illegally through ports of entry. He highlighted a threat posed by the caravan of migrants heading towards the u. S. Border. At this very moment, large, wellorganized caravans of migrants are marching toward our southern border. Some people calm it an invasion. Its like an invasion. They are violently overrun the Mexican Border. You saw that two days ago. These are tough people in many cases. A lot of young men, strong men and a lot of men that maybe we dont want in our country. We have no idea who they are. All we know is theyre pretty tough people when they can blast through the mexican military and Mexican Police. Theyre pretty tough people. Even mexico set, wow, these are tough people. I dont want them in our country. And women dont want them in our country. Women want security. Men dont want them in our country. But the women do not want them. Women want security. You look at what the women are looking for, they want to have security. Anybody throwing stones, rocks like they did to mexico and the mexican military and police, where they badly hurt police and soldiers of mexico, we will consider that a firearm. Because there is not much difference. When you get hit in the face with a rock, which as you know it was very violent a few days ago, very, very violent. Really, willie, there is so much to unpack there. Of course, we can start with the obvious, which is donald trump is more concerned with a 9yearold girl throwing a pebble and says that, well, they should our military should take fire and shoot to kill young girls, the young boys that they throw pebbles or rocks. But, there is Something Else that was going on in there. Absolutely unbelievable in 2018 we got a president closing out a campaign with his strategy. You know there were always those horrible stories of how young black men in the south in small, sleepy tourn towns. We always seen the movies and whatever, stay away from our white women. Stay away from our white women. If you talk to our white women, if you get close to our white women, you will be lynched. You always read about that. You always saw documentaries about that. Young black men accused of talking to a white woman, being around white women. Donald trump is doing the same thing there. Men, lots of bad men coming and our women, our women dont want those bad men. I mean, its like hes lifting it straight up out of the 1940s and 1950s in the deep south and placing it right in the mild of the campaign for a Closing Argument 2018, it is breath taking and it will not work. And you can draw a through line from the first day of his president ial campaign, joe, in june of 2015, where he talked about racist, sorry, rapists coming in across the border. Mention can rapists coming in across the border. His entire presidency and runup to the Midterm Election is grounded in this immigration and this idea of a threat coming up from the border and gene robinson, you couple that with the idea that he declared yesterday that he will authorize these troops that he says he will send 15,000 perhaps to the board tore fire on this imMigrant Caravan, this Migrant Caravan coming up from the border if it ever makes it to the border in a couple months, will fire on them if they throw rocks at troops. Its kind of the bull conor strategy of trying to close out this election. One wonders, you know, where are the police dogs theyre going to set on the migrants . Where are the fire hoses before you get to the bullets . It really is, as joe says, its more than an echo of racist in the jim crowe south, racist officials, its more than an echo, its an exact copy, exactly the same playbook. It is just astounding. You know, and im not the only one from the south here. Elise, you know, you would remember as well, you would know of those days. You are probably too young to have lived through them. But its just amazing that the president of the United States is running this sort of campaign in 2018. Its just appalling. Just appalling. Very sad. Its not going to work. But its very sad. Yeah. And elise jordan, the thing that is so striking is donald trump actually believes by talking about maraud brown men coming to america that somehow this is his strategy to make the gender gap smaller and shooting at 9yearold girls if they throw rocks at fully armed u. S. Marines or soldiers . How clueless is this guy . Well, just, any time donald trump wants to claim that he knows what women want, he probably should just stop right then and there. Because he really has never nailed it. No. This has been such a debacle in that the administration puts out so many false claims about whats actually going on, ignoring the root cause of the problem, the incredible poverty and instability thats teaming in these Central American companies causing them to flee for their lives in hopes of a better life. The whole debate gets distorted. They arent coming up with a solution. They use american troops as props seeking to deploy up to 15,000 troops on the u. S. Border before thanksgiving and christmas . Its just a misuse unbelievable. Of American Forces and also for donald trump to promote the idea that they should be shooting children who are throwing rocks is just such a violation of the u. S. Military code and what any commander would ever, ever authorize a troop doing. I just find it hard to believe that james mattis is going to allow any of this to move forward. Again, obviously the president is the commanderinchief. Well, this seems to me before he sent more people for a political deploy to the Mexican Border than afghanistan, he would walk away from the job, which tells me this is never going to happen. Willie, i want to under if you look at the polls, barbara comstock, northern virginia, we go to her, thats a pro to typical suburban area, shes losing by 11, 12, 13, 14, her numbers have collapsed since donald trump started talk thating ability this. Don young he is close to, hes in a very close race, maybe losing indiana as you showed yesterday. Joe donelly, who was supposed to lose, polls are breaking, hes seven points ahead in that poll. We got three polls out that show bill nelson ahead on top of the sitting governor in the state of florida. There is one poll after another poll that just shows pretty remarkable results and this strategy is failing the president. Yeah, for all the places that are welcoming donald trump to rallies this weekend and want him there to help prop up a candidate, there are many others that want him to stay away. He talked about himself. A new report suggests that could be a problem for his party. According to New York Times the president may prove to be a breaking point in tuesdays contest for educated wealthier white republicans, especially women. The times requests says they like the gop policies but rejects his divisive language on race and gender. The paper says instead of wooing the voters back the president appears to have written them off the times talks about the Migrant Caravan and birthright citizenship in the final days before the election. They call an alarmist tactic. The times districts that include diverse populations, the party is in danger of losing because they have alienated these voters who once made up a dependable constituency. Donny i saw you nodding as you heard those characterizations of those voters. Donald trump is not only vial and disgusting, hes stupid. Can you see its easy to look at this election. Oh, is this a referendum of donald trump . Do i like him . This is do i want donald trump unbridled, more in power, if im a republican, do i want him there . Do i. Pading around him . Guard rails around him, the same way there were closet people that were not going to vote for hillary, there were so many republicans you describe there, theyre either going to stay home or say you know what, i want some guardrails against him. There was a marist poll yesterday that 80 of americans are concerned that the current political tone will lead to violence. People are frightened. They just are. They also see an irresponsible man treating the military like those little green soldiers we grew up with, like theyre not human beings, from a podium in the roosevelt room, which is supposed to be used for policy not campaigns. There is a sniff test. The final thing one man said the consumer is not a consumer. Its your wife, your next door friend, a voter is human being. Human beings can smell this. Ahead, some of the hard fought battles in the nation. We have Steve Kornacki. He will be here, he will break it down. Get out your popcorn. This is going to be fierce. Morning joe coming right back. Were int for the love of the game. Kornacki, hes a superstar. Lets talk, mr. Hot shot, about lets talk about some of the polls. What do we start to see the most interesting . I think the one most people would say predicts how this is going to turn out next week than anything else, there is another poll out showing Donald Trumps Approval Ratings dipping down into the low 40s after he was experiencing 46, 45, 47 last week. The latest poll has his Approval Rating down to 41. Disapproval 52 . Gallup down to 40, dropping four or five points from the previous week. This at the end of the day is what you and republicans and democrats are looking at the most closely, isnt it, as far as how big a wave might be . We were saying there is a big difference between trump going into election day in the mid40s versus the low 40s. When you get down into the 30 the average this morning, average every poll that out there together they have been doing a daily trend line with that, its sitting this morning at 43. 9 still. A week ago today it was 44. 7. 44. 7 a week ago, it was basically the High Water Mark of the trump presidency. You got to go back to the early weeks to find him matching that number. That was a week ago. Its come down essentially a point in a week. I suspect we will get a batch of new polls. A lot of media organizations in the closing weekend before the midterm tradition has come out with this. I suspect we will get a couple in the next few days that will kind of set that number and give us a sense where it is heading into election day. Right. If it continues that trend, obviously, we can expect it to be 40 or some in the high 30s. Lets go to texas. I want to tell my conservetive friends a week ago, mocking beto orourke for getting wiped out against ted cruz. They were sounding just like democrats who were mocking republicans for suggesting donald trump could win in 2016. Again, this is a big uphill climb. This is only one race but that orourke is getting much closer to ted cruz than the Republican Party would like. What you see on the screen there, that is a good poll for beto orourke. You got to say, he is still behind in that poll. Weve had i got to say there have been more polls out of texas than any other state we seen in cycle. Still, the patterns persisted. Its a bit of a parallel you can almost draw from what weve seen in the Texas Senate Race and the floridas governor race. In the floridas governor race the republican is not out of it. Desantis by any stretch of the imagination, but every poll i have seen has had Andrew Gillum leading the Florida Governor race and every poll i have seen since early on in september has shown ted cruz leading the Texas Senate Race. Its close enough in each situation where if there is a turnout shift. If there is more energy on one side than we thought. If there is less official than we thought on election day, there could be a surprise, but the totality of the polling out of the texas still suggests cruz lead there somewhere i would say in the single digits, closer than for a republican, still does look like a lead heading into election day for them. Coming up, the midterms elect special counsel from the front pages. Thats okay. He is still working 24 hours a day seven days a week the investigation is still going on, still turning up details, we have New York Times reporter Michael Schmidt. He has another scoop about steve bannon and the wikileaks. He joins us next on morning joe. Im at this wing joint telling people that geico has been offering savings for over 75 years. Newly revealed emails obtained by the New York Times show how roger stone portrayed himself to top Campaign Officials as a special conduit to wikileaks in 2016, damaging to Hillary Clintons campaign. Joining us now with more on that scoop, New York Times reporter Michael Schmidt. Also with us, the u. S. Attorney for the Southern District of new york. Fellow at the Brennan Center for justice and msnbc legal justice Daniel Goldman. Let me start with you. Roger stones name has always been out there as a guy that either had a leak to wikileaks or wanted to portray himself as being a player in the middle of the campaign and suggesting he had a leak to wikileaks and the campaign. Which one is it, according to your reporting . Thats sort of what we are getting at the problem mueller has the issue he is trying to resolve. Was stone simply someone that was boasting and bragging to give him more currency if trump world to give him importance so people would Pay Attention to him . Or was he truly a cutout the person who was communicating with weikileaks and moving the information back to the campaign and communicating with them . Thats what these emails show the campaign was not so quick necessarily to embrace stone. In one of the emails, bannon basically saying he had Better Things to do than initially talking to stone than shortly thereafter. Bannon following up with stone to find out if he knew anything about an upcoming dump of emails. But that is the real tension of the stone story, where we dont have clarity yet, stone under investigation for all sorts of things related to his conduct. Mueller talking to a lot of different people. But at the heart of it is the question of collusion. The biggest question of the 2016 election and was he the person passing information back and how high into the campaign did that information go . Its clear bannon turned to him thinking he was someone representing himself as in touch with assange, but was he really talking to him . Dan, off mikes story, he was talking act, whats there from the u. S. Attorneys Office Prospect. You look at this story, collusion, interference in an election . It would seem upon a quick read of the story, steve bannon has isolated himself from any charges. What do you see there . I and i think michael and his colleagues put their finger on it, it seems to me that they may be looking more at stone for what we would call derivative crimes. Not actually collusion, but lying to the house about it. Maybe some degree of obstruction of just tils. Because if you if he simply knew what Julian Assange. What would the obstruction be . I dont know. Thats what were trying to figure out. In some case, whether its something that flowed after as part of the investigation is sort of what im getting at. If roger stone merely knew that Julian Assange was going to release emails, thats probably not enough to charge him with conspireing with a Foreign Agent to interfere with the election. He would have to take some act to help or assist foreigners to interfere, he would have to take some act to help Julian Assange release those emails or do Something Else. I think what michael and his leagues are getting at, its a very difficult question for mueller to double down on what was stones involvement . I will say this, given all the grand jury activity about roger stone, one has to believe they are preparing an indictment for him. Daniel, let me ask you really quickly. I understand, i understand that if hes just passing along information. Thats one thing, isnt there the possibly of a conspiracy . That information hes passing along, say john modesto is in the barrel and says let me tell you, this is whats happening the fol week, even if hes not giving that out, hes giving the Trump Campaign information. Hes conspireing to help coordinate their message. Its about as big that sort of information is about as big and powerful as information that you can give in the middle of a Political Campaign is there a possibly he violated a federal crime in doing that, in helping the Trump Campaign coordinate the message with russian agents . Absolutely. There is a possibility. Part of it go es to what his intent s. Was he relaying this information with the knowledge and intent that the Trump Campaign will use it and the emails to influence the election, knowing that the source came from someone nonamerican so to speak so i dont mean at all to say roger stone does not have exposure in being involved in the conspiracy indictment you put out. Im saying these emails we saw in the times reporting, it doesnt get Robert Mueller far enough in and of themselves. It could be helpful. It shows, obviously, that roger stone had some connection to Julian Assange. But i think he would need more. Its not to say there isnt more. Its we dont know that yet on the outside. There is a sixth Congressional District in colorado, mike cough mon continues to win there people show up. Its exstrorder that compared to other parts ertz of the country. A suspicious package has been found in chappaqua, fork. Reporter last week as the country was gripped by fear. A suspicious package was found earlier today. Reporter we went on a mile high search. Were into aurora, colorado, where this thing may be decided. It turns out, people are already voting there. In colorado, everyone votes by mail. Part of the reason turnout is so high here. Some drop off their ballots at a place like this, too. So we decided to hajj out to see what we could find to hang out to see what we could find. Are you coming to drop your ballot off . Yes. I have been waiting. What do you want to change the most . Well the presidency, but, of course, its not time for that. Reporter what itself the thing aurora that matters most to you . Well, getting involved in all this violence thats going on in other cities. Reporter you have been looking at that on the news . Yeah. Reporter you think the democrats have a shot in smr we believe in our republican congressman the way hes backing up republicans. We believe in what he stands for, what he has done for us. I dont know why wha you are doing here . Reporter why we came the democrats have a chance of changing this district. Do you think they have a shot . Smr this election its important to make a shift. Reporter the sixt district could shift because of its demographics. Much of it looks nothing like colorado so we head to a part thats been called the mile high united nations. Part of the reason the democrats think this district might flip is because of its diversity. We have chinese businesses, thai businesses, korean businesses, latino businesses, and a vietnamese business. Behind latinos, either i dont wantians ethiopians make up the second district. This area voted for a democrat for president but a republican for congress. My district when it comes to human rights. Reporter right next to benjamins market, he operates a restaurant. Is this lunch or dinner . Its lunch. My wifes birthday. Reporter sorry to interrupt. Are you go him to vote . This time around they plan to go with the democrats. I really thought that congress would make a part, make it even better with health care. Reporter when you think of going to the polls, do you think about trump . All the time. Reporter if there is anywhere in the district that might not be influenced by donald trump is in the south. In the more conservative parts. We headed to a fiscal church in centennial. You look like you need help with that . Can i help you out . My conwould like these. So you have this Congressional Election thats coming up, right . I served two terms on the city council. Reporter what do you think is going to happen this year . I think its up for grabs. Its trump and the Republican Party mantra before the citizens of this house district. What are the local issues that matter to people here. One is health care. You are saying something that the ethiopians said to me yesterday . Yes, it matters. Reporter you voted for a republican. He hasnt been one to hold trumps feet to the fire. We need a change. We need a change. We need balance. Reporter so a meeting and change obviously is in reference to donald trump. That is not music i would imagine to republicans ears at this late stage in the game. In colorado, democrats ahead of early voting totals, which is different, you have been talking about throughout the rest of the country. All right. Jacob, stay with us. Lets bring in stewart stevens. A former republican and, yeah, the strategist, brilliant mind. Whatever you want to say. You know, stewart, ive noticed something this week that really trumps harshest critics on this show, at least, have all been former republicans, rick tyler, who, of course, spent his entire life in duty to the Republican Party and ted cruz. Are rick wilson, man, ive known that guy forever. Hes been a fire brand. A red hot republican, a red hot conservative. Steve schmidt who ushered through robertson and alito, to get those two conservatives on the supreme court. Of course, nicole who worked on 43 president ial campaigns about as tough as they come. You and even al cardenis who is the head of sea pack before donald trump and by the way, theyre not saying this is kind of bad, theyre saying this is the party. This is the end of conservatism unless we fix ourselves. Are you noticing a rising level of intensity among republicans who are saying this just cant continue . Well, you know, theres a whole group of us. Probably youd be in na groin t group, joe, when Ronald Reagan announced his candidacy in front of the statue of liberty. That great symbol of america as a nation of immigrants. Yesterday we had the president of the United States who you have to admit leads the Republican Party. Hes the face and voice of the Republican Party. Standing in the white house, which is the most well known symbol of american greatness boasting that he was going to order armed american troops to treat brown children throwing rocks at them with deadly force. I mean, that is just such a depressing moment for so many of us that thought of an optimistic conservatism, embracing conservatism. There is a whole group of us that you listed some of us. Me, steve, nicole, mike gershin, mark mccann none. We literally all used to sit in the same room in the Bush Campaign and there it was compassionate conservatism. Its not like we were perfect, but we aspired to something better. So aspire to something better. Go ahead. Well, stew, i want to ask you and you, joe, as you watch what unfolded yesterday, as you indicated, joe the president of the United States standing in the white house basically going right to race, right to the bottom, dividing the country with the imprimitor of the presidency stamped on him. Where is the rest of the Republican Party . Ive looked in the papers. Ive looked at the wires. There is no one saying this is too much, hes gone too far . Well, you know, stewart, there are a few who were scattered around, paul ryan came out after Donald Trumps preposterous suggestion that he that he could rip up the constitution with just his signature on a piece of paper. But you still have people like Lindsey Graham who actually says, hey, its a great idea to try to erad indicates part of the 14th amendment with just a signature . Howell barrasing that has to be for his law school, right . In there its a very depressing moment. I mean, you have a president who is white, who doesnt seem to get what it means when a white president boasts about being a nationalist. The message that that sends. There is no question its morally bankrupt. There is a question if its politically bankrupt yet. But well see what this election does, see what the next. But there is also no question that there the no future in this. If the Republican Party is defined as a white party that rejects people who are nonwhite, its a death sentence. When you look at whats playing out now is basically played out in 1994 in california when pete wilson ran that famous ad which is similar to the ad. Not nearly as donald trump is running now about mexicans coming over the border. It started out, they keep coming. And since that election, no republican really has been able to win state wide except Arnold Schwartz neger schaow schwar schwarzenegger. America is a big conciseing diverse country and donald trump just doesnt team to get that he represents the entire country and not just white people. There is no casting, it doesnt work, elise, i need to add you obviously to the list of republicans who have spoken out strongly against some of Donald Trumps worst instinct. I wanted to quote Ronald Reagan on immigration. I did owe i was inspired to involved. This is what he said of immigrants going past the statue of liberty. They didnt ask what this country could do for them, but what they could do to make the this renew jersey the greatest home of freedom in history. They brought with them courage and the values of family, work and freedom and Ronald Reagan said of immigrants, let us pledge to each other that we can make America Great again. Ronald reagan running for president of the United States saying, we make America Great again by always remembering what the statue of liberty standing high in new york harbor is really all ability. Its about us. Well, Ronald Reagan had a hopeful message when it came to immigration, that is if great contrast to donald trump and his constant fear mongering. What i wonder about with Donald Trumps strategy this week is if he perhaps went a little too far even with the strongest supporters when it comes to birthright citizenship and challenging the constitution. We were in fresno over i guess it was wednesday and we spoke to or no tuesday actually this week. Its election blur of mind, we spoke to republicans about who wanted more restrictive immigration. They want the laws to be enforced. That was what we consistently heard, but they object id strenuously to the idea of restricting or ending birthright citizenship. So donald trump is throwing spaghetti at the wall, but hes not even making sense to his strongest supporters when it comes to just this draconian immigration policy. Can i say, at least, stuart mentioned with rartd to going too far. You mentioned the president doesnt know what it moo ens to stand up and say hes a nationalist. I think actually he knows what it means. I think its exactly what he wants to say. Its exactly what he wants the American People to think. I saw it first hand with the child separations. He wanted people to know how vicious this policy was, riming paints away from their children. In that instance and i think from what im starting to see on the ground like i saw in colorado just now, for example. People are starting to see through it. They saw through it with the separationles. He had the ball to walk away. Now in colorado for the first time, people didnt want to talk to me about local issues, traffic the environment, or whatever the case may b. I thapted to talk to me about donald trump how he was making them sick. You know there has always been room for a party of fear and a party of hate in earthquake many. But its never been a sustaining moment when George Wallace ran, the largest rally he ever had was in Boston Common sense, 78,000 people. But thats not where massachusetts is today. You just have to bet on the better side of america. You have to bet that americans arent going to take this message of fear and america should be a country that is a afraid. That is really Donald Trumps message. You should be afraid. I will protect you. Not we are the land of the free and the brave. Its just so so antiamerican that you just have to hope its near or the long term. Hes a complete moron. What just came over is they created 250,000 jobs last month. A huge, huge number. He cant seem to get out of his own way. He want talk about the taxes. He cant talk about the economy. He cant talk about so many things because that hasnt worked. And i want to say, again, he has been resorting to the most antirepublican, anticonservative values of all. You are right, reagan was an optimiop optimist. Millions of men and women who first stepped foot on american soil right there on ellis island, so close to the statue of liberty, and Ronald Reagans argument on september 1st, 1980, when he stood in front of the statue of liberty was he had confidence in the future of america, not jimmy carter, because he knew that america always threw open its arms to immigrants, always regenerated itself through that power and always knew that america was going to be made better in the future. Yes, the problem is the Republican Party we were drawn to, you have to i think we have to honestly ask ourselves is it being redefined. I hope theres a battle for heart and soul of the Republican Party. But these americas a very personality driven culture. What the Republican Party is under donald trump, will it go back to a better angel . We have to see what happens and hope that it happens but i dont see a lot of signs that it is happening. Stuart, i want to say that i still believe, like Ronald Reagan, that americas greatest days lie ahead. I also believe better days lie ahead for ole miss. Hottie tottie. Good days are coming. Stuart stevens. Hey, mike barnicle, how much did you love oxford, mississippi . Its one of the best places ive ever been in this country, no exaggeration. I realize it was a big game day weekend. You know, sara eisen, i keep hearing about a slowdown is coming. I keep hearing about how a Market Correction is just around the corner. That may happen some day. But that did not happen today. Big numbers today. Tell us about them. A series of very strong job number, joe. 250,000 jobs were added during the month. That was better than economists were forecasting. That is matching the lowest level since the late 1960s. Heres the kicker. Wages in the month of october rising 1. 3 from last year. That is the fastest wage growth weve seen in a decade. First time since the financial crisis that we have seen wages rise past that 3 level. Its a sign that the labor market is getting tighter. There are a lot of job openings. Other than that picture, end of 2016, the question was is Hillary Clinton a crook or not. This last ten days is, is donald trump a racist or not. I think well see a blue wave. I believe it like you, joe. Im an optimist. I believe in our country. My gosh, you look at Donald Trumps own words, his own actions. I think that question actually answers itself. Mike barnicle, final thoughts. Five days away from what has to be one of the most important election of our life. Yes, new definition of incompetence, joe. Fastest wage growth in decades, we just heard. New jobs report. Record, we just heard. The president of the United States is talking about shoot to kill at the border. Thats the definition of political incompetence. Talking about shooting to kill little kids that are throwing rocks at soldiers. Thats never going to happen because the troops are never going to be sent down there because its all a big lie. All right, on that happy news, have a great weekend, everybody.
