Battleground florida. His running mate mike pence holds a rally in wisconsin. Clintons running mate tim kaine campaigns in orlando. Thats a wrap for us on this tuesday. Im alex witt alongside i know you live in your own reality, but thats not the facts. I think my strongest as set maybe by far is my temperament, my winning temperament, i know how to win. I think donald just criticized me for preparing for this debate. And yes, i did. And you know what else i prepared for . I prepared to be president , and i think thats a good thing. That was the moment right there. Tuesday, september 27th. Welcome to morng joe. High stakes duel on long island. The daily news says faceoff of the nation. I think is one the west coast has been favorable for donald trump. Two debaters on the attack. A lot to talk about today and get through. We have veteran column northwest, mike barnicle, and former Communications Director, nicole wallace, and managing editor of Bloomberg Politics, mark halperin. Good to be you with all. What do you think . If you judge it by marcus, Hillary Clinton won it exactly. And then i am with you, nicole, i thought South Carolina was the worst performance in my life, and he ended up winning it massively going away. Theres no doubt that he repeated himself at the beginning of the debate, and he had a major drop off of energy and rambling and talking about Rosie Odonnel. Definitely for those moments, and i think will say us, and i put that in quotes because its a large group of people, and we all thought Hillary Clinton won, and i could not stop watching until the end because there was something that was telling me he was doing well, and he was not as bad was would expect him to be given the lack of preparation or whatever happened in the past. He was not as bad as he was in a lot of republican debates. I think he said things on what people are feeling on a number of levels and i wouldnt be Surprise Fire Department he came out doing better in the polls after this, and she was not as great as she could have been. Thats really what i was saying. Judged by the old rules, and you would say Hillary Clinton won this hands down. But there were flurries he had, almost like a boxing match, where he jabbed her and kept jabbing her. So much he threw against the wall but she didnt know where to go. He was the political outsider and it was a rigged system and for people just walking through the living room and not sitting there for 90 minutes, or more importantly seeing the clips today, they may think trump won the debate. We learned a long time ago to stop judging trump as as far traditiditio traditionally, and if you look who looked like they should be president , it was not close, it was Hillary Clinton. Its about an emotional connection its the male and female interview, and the male goes in and blusters and doesnt tell the truth all the time and chances are he will get the job and the woman goes in completely prepared and makes a lot of sense and has a perfect interview. What we watched and heard last night we live in a bubble. Lets face it. We live in a bubble as well in terms of observations. By the way i am serious, the bubble expanded out to Republican College educated voted as well, and the bubble used to be the manhattan bubble, and even the republican voter that looks at this and says, thats very easy, and the person that spoke in complete sentences seemed coherent and actually used language the way we want our children to use language, probably won the debate. Thats why my sense, one of the key moments was she prepared for the debate and also prepared to be president , and the poll numbers are not going to move right away but they are going to move. I was struck i watched it, and we held her to unrealistically exceedingly high standards and she exceeded them. I thought she did everything she should have done. More than everything she should have done. I thought it was a performance if you work in politics you have to stand back and admire. Right. It was more than preparation, and i thought she was quick on her feet and charming and funny. But this is a parallel universe where he also came out still breathing and with donald trump is concerned i was screaming, and thank god you can text on the jetblue fight, and i said Donald Trumps campaign is over and not only did he win the state running away and he was thought of the next morning he was winning the debate, and she was sharing with his advisers he thought he won the debate. Anybody that knows donald trump knows that donald trump knows he won the debate and will be quoting drudge and every other online poll that you can judge. There were a couple other snap polls. Cnn found Scientific Study found that Hillary Clinton ran away with the debate, 62 to 27 , and donald trump will not be sharing that poll, he will share the drudge report which 80 said he won the debate, but jaymee weinstein tweeted, drudge poll on the debate looks more like iraq. I dont know if i would say that. And you have 80 of the people revved up enough to go to those polls suggests something about the intensity. Throughout the primaries, time would have one of the online polls as well. And there is not anything donald trump did last night that would cause his supporters to say he won the debate. There are two more debates and if he is smart he will prepare more than he did. Hes not going to do that, mark. Do you think. Answer the question we have been knocking around the table, do you think he will suffer in the polls . I dont think most of us around this table think he will . I think its as you suggested, its foolish to say there will be some kind of leaner election. I think he will get a couple days of News Coverage and he has to decide if he wants to go around and say i won the debate. Can i challenge you a little bit . I wa its College Educated Republican Voters, and many of them support donald trump, but i know a lot of them who do not and they watch performances like last night and want them to shield their childrens eyes, and maybe them think you need to work harder and articulate better and hold yourself to a higher standard than that, and this is not an elite group that said Hillary Clinton won the debate last night. On the other hand, we will see if theres a linear connection between what happened last night in the polls. Its not formal debate rules that an educated person might judge a debate, and there will be issues on where a more experienced debater would be the better debater on points, and had executed more. Early on, mark, he was hammering her pretty hard and hammering her there were a couple lines you were telling me about that we were talking about this morning that he hammered her again on being an insider, and it was very, very effective. If thats the clip that low information voters see today, they are going to say thats my guy. When he came in the spin room afterwards, which is unprecedented, thats the theme he wanted to reemphasize, she had been in washington but there were too many long stretches of evening where he was not talking about that theme, particularly after the first 20 minutes. I dont know if he helped himself get new voters but i think he did help do damage. I dont know. He was pretty terrible. He was really bad. Im sorry. I am really tired. Its not a perfect world. Let me just say you know what you sound like . You sound like your College Roommate really likes a guy and he has come in and slept with every other girl in the sorority. Yeah, and he says, isnt he wonderful . And you are like, i cant say he is wonderful anymore. He just vomits on your shoes he got in a couple good lines, like saying he was for trade a long time and reinforced the other good line, and one was yes, you have been there 30 years and one was her record on trade and if you have this economic angst, and i expect his base to stay with him today. I dont think he just spoke to the base. I dont think his poll numbers will go up because he was so bad that nobody new will like him. Theres a whole new world that has been very, very wary for the past 30 years, and i think he spoke to them in more of the policy driven exchanges. He invoked the north American Free trade agreement pastoring bill Clintons Administration and seemed to put clinton on the defense over president obamas landmark trade deal. Now you want to approve trance pacific partnership, and you were totally in favor of it and learned then how bad i said it was and then you said you could not support nothing will top nafta. That is just not accurate. I was against it once it was finally negotiated and the terms were laid out. I wrote about that you called it the Gold Standard. You called it the Gold Standard of trade deals and you said it was the finest deal you have ever seen and you heard what i said about it, and then all of a sudden you were against it. Donald, i know you live in your own reality, and that is not the fact. I did say i hoped it would be a good deal, and i wrote so is it president obamas fault . Is it president obamas fault . Secretary, is it president obamas fault, because hes for it. There Hillary Clinton was trying to complete a sentence, and he got shouted down four times. I wonder if that hurt donald trump, interrupting a woman four times . I dont know where i am getting this, and my overall gut feeling from watching the entire debate, she was amazing and really good. I just think that he is going to do quite well out of this. You dont know where you get it from, you get it from the republican debate. I know what is appealing about him to the American People that follow him, not just his movement, but others who are perhaps sick of what happened over the past few decades. He got him things that go, yeah, exactly. And then a lot of people noticed the debate when it got into the subject of taxes. You have to ask yourself, why wont he release his tax returns. I think there may be a couple reasons. First, maybe hes not as rich as he thinks he is, and second maybe he is not as charitable he is. He owes 650 million to wall street or foreign banks, or maybe he doesnt want you to know he paid nothing in federal taxes and what we have seen is when he had to turn them over to get a casino licenses that makes me smart. Theres something hes hiding. We will keep guessing at what he might be hiding, and the question is if he were to get near the white house, who does he omeny to . You dont learn that much from tax returns, that i can tell you. You should go down and take a look at that. The other thing, i am extremely under leveraged. The report that said 650, and boy, thats not a lot of money relative to what i had. The buildings in question, they said in the same report, actually it was not a bad story to be honest with you. We are a debtor nation, a serious debtor nation, and we have a country that needs new roads and tunnels and bridges and new schools and hospitals, and we dont have the money because its been squandered on so many of your ideas. And maybe its because you have not paid a lot of federal income tax for a lot of years. And it would be squandered, too, believe me. Actually that was a strong donald trump point where he talks about, why arent we spending money to infrastructure, and its simplistic. You would have wasted my money, too, which is how a lot of americans feel. They are not going anywhere. Right now he is tied in colorado, and he is tied in a lot of other states. Yes, he is. If he doesnt lose the core and this race stays where it is right now what is that core . People that go to work. If anybody is out there, thinking that i dont like either candidate, i will cast a vote for the libertarian or green party, you now know that only one of those two people last night on tv is going to be president of the United States, so you are going to think about maybe i should not throw my vote away. Thats going to happen as well and thats going to happen to her benefit. There were several moments at that debate, and if it was anybody else, these would be infamous moments where he said yeah, i dont pay federal tax and that makes me smarter, and when he said he was rooting for the housing market, he said that is called business, and he said, theres a lot of people in that lawsuit and i settled with no fault and no guilt there. He talked about not discriminating, i did not discriminate against anybody, and those are moments had it been anybody else it would have been a huge gaffe. Or not paying people in full peufplt yeah, maybe they didnt do a good job. When they got to Foreign Policy, your point is on steroids. When they got to Foreign Policy, that was sort of where he was losing energy, for a guy that crushed his position by calling them low energy. I have never seen a more low energy talking about Rosie Odonnel. Yeah, lets take a quick listen. Lets show it. Go ahead. The final question hillary is hitting me with tremendous commercials and some is in entertainment and i said tough things to Rosie Odonnel and people would agree she deserves it and nobody feels sorry for her, and if you want to know the truth, i was going to Say Something extremely rough to hillary and her family and i said to myself, i cant do it. I just cant do it. Its inappropriate and its not nice, but she spent hundreds of millions of dollars on negative ads on me, and many of which are absolutely untrue, and they are untrue and misrepresentations and i will tell you this, lester,ts not nice and i dont i dont deserve that, but it is certainly not a nice thing that she has done. Its hundreds of millions of ads and the only gratifying thing, i saw the polls come in today we have to move on to the final question. And i am either winning or tied, and i have spent practically nothing. Mark halperin, heres my take, actually this debate is not going to change a whole lot. Did donald trump under perform based on marcus queenbury rules, perhaps he did. I just dont know people going to work this morning who want change are going to say, okay, i will go for the person that, you know, ticked off the policy prescriptions better than the other when donald trump undercuts all of that by saying you have been there for 35 years, and if you had all of these great ideas why didnt you implement them over 35 years . Thats just a really strong powerful argument. I dont know this debate does anything to change any dynamidy. The next debate he will talk about that more often and talk less about his business dealings and et cetera. A lot of debates, its the News Coverage that had discussions like this on the local news and if the ratings are what they suspect, and it would be what most of the people saw over 90 minutes, and the fundamental question, going back to what mike said, is she qualified and does he clear the bar to be commanderinchief, and i just think you you too many moments last night that will raise questions, and i dont think the polls will change, i agree with that. He is not disciplined enough to do what you think he might do, to hone in his arguments, trade, 35 years in office and nothin has gotten done and the per in this thing, willie mentioned it, his housing comment, thats part of the core of his support, people that watch their homes in this country. I would not underestimate him. Thats a mistake that has been made all along peufplt still ahead, the Clinton Campaign joins us, and chuck todd, and correspondent, halle jack outside the debate. You are watching morning joe. Well be right back. Ure not a u dont cook. Youre not a firefighter, if you dont fight fires. Or a coach, if you dont coach. And you cant be our leader, if you dont lead. Our next president needs to take action on Social Security, or future generations could lose up to 10,000 a year. Were working hard, what about you . Hey candidates, do your jobs. Keep Social Security strong. Iand i could tell that when shen i waslooked at me she didnt see disability. She saw someone strong and capable like i see myself. Donald trump doesnt see people like me. He just sees disability. I honestly feel bad for someone with so much hate in his heart. We need a president who sees the best in all of us. Im Hillary Clinton and i approve this message. I dont think anybody knows it was russia that broke into the dnc, and maybe it was but it could be china and other people and it could be somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds, okay . You dont know who broke in to dcn . But what did we learn . We learned Bernie Sanders was taken advantage of by your people, by Debbie Wasserman shultz, and look what happened to her. Bernie sanders was taken advantage of. Now, whether that was russia, and whether that was china, and whether it was another country, we dont know because the truth is under president obama we have lost control of things that we used to have control over. That is donald trump last night talking about cyber crime. Willie, i feel like that 400pound comment was practiced straight at me. I feel like he practiced that with his team. Joining us now, Trumps Campaign manager. I cant take credit for that. What am i missing here . Dont look at me. Look at her. I am asking you guys, and then you can ask kelly ann. I dont think he resonated well. Everybody is talking about, as we said before, you judged this by all past debate standards, Hillary Clinton won, and most of us around the table believe that but you dont judge donald trump by those standards. Do you think he connected with the base or found new voters . He connected with places we are hearing from like ohio, and pennsylvania, and those that feel things have gone abroad. I thought he was not debating for america, that he was actually he kept going back to trade and i felt like it was a midwest rust belt debate for him. Hes a connecter. He heard from many on the stump, and i am surprised when you go on the road they talk about the trade immigration access and its costing jobs in the local communities, and that was great. I also feel that there was no knockout punch by Hillary Clinton as much as her ability to tell us all everything she learned in preparation for donald trump, and she really needed to force him to make a huge mistake that would be the headline this morning, and she did not. I felt sometimes, the camera, she was speaking and she looked a little glib, almost like why am i on the stage with this man, a little bit beneath her. I have to say, certainly as a woman, i appreciated the restraint at the end, and i am not sure i would have been able to exercise it myself, and to tell Hillary Clinton after she accused him about women, and i was prepared to go rough tonight and i am not going to do it because of your husband and daughter are here, and thats a great temperament. He played rough during the primary and we wont sit and argue that. We keep talking about marcus of queensbury rules or our rules. What are the official rules . Debates dont really matter. Maybe this one didnt matter because nobody what do you look for as sort of new voters. We will watch the polls. I know that i think he will get new voters. Inside his circle, there was a missed opportunity for a lot of folks inside the trump world last night, there were feelings there were opportunities to pivot where he is squirrely on offense, where he does it all the time, and will that be sort of the to the degree that he tries to step it up at all, and will it be getting himself on offense for 90 minutes for the debate. I was glad he pivoted to her emails, and i think its a very maportant and Current Issue to americans. Just this week, last week, she has close staffers taking the fifth, and they are not fond of the Second Amendment but they are fond of the fifth amendment over there, and this is an active ongoing investigation. I was glad he pivoted to that, and donald trump was guilty of answering the question asked, and Hillary Clinton no matter what was asked or answered, she was going to repeat back to us everything she learned in the last week or two weeks, and hes a different kind of candidate. If you are an outsider and disrupter and you get oxygen from the crowds you are not going to stop going out day after day to bring your policy prescriptions and ideas right to the people, and hes getting ready to go to florida right now. Will you suggest any adjustments or were you fine with the performance . Will you suggest he get himself on the offense, and a lot of the questions didnt favor him, so will you keep this performance href annual i think he is great when he peufe pivots, and i would remind you what senator obama said in 2008, he said Hillary Clinton will say anything to win, and ink last night approved that again, and i agree with president obama she will say anything to win. You said a minute ago donald trump should get credit for the restraint, and what was he going to say . I think he could have said what was on millions of americans minds, are we going to relitigate who has been good to women or hasnt, and they are taking a couple comments they made over any number of years as a private citizen versus where he could have gone, and i think we all can finish the sentence. People did finish the sentence, and they said maybe he was going to talk about bill clintons record with does donald trump hold Hillary Clinton responsible i think when you say record with women, i think you mean his personal. Just to be clear. Does he hold hillary clinton i won a dollar bet on the fact that Hillary Clinton would mention that last night, and spending tens of millions on ads, and theres negative mail on this issue, and last night americas women should look at the two candidates and say to themselves, i have two choices, i can continue in the failed direction, and i am either part of the 70 of americans that want change, o i think the status quo change for me and my family. Are you saying the debate helped and you would take two more performances just the way he was last night, or the debates arent as important as the press has made him out to be . I think the debates are important for voters to see them side by side, mark, and to evaluate who they can see as commanderinchief and who they can see as president of the United States. I dont think Hillary Clinton did a thing last night. What was the big takeaway moment where she offers a huge vision . You feel comfortable that woman is equipped from calling isis our determined enemies over to savage murderers, and the birth and growth of which occurred on hers and president obamas watch . I didnt hear any big moment for her where she convinced the 70 of americans who want change, who want a different direction, that shes their gal. Kelly anne, thank you so much for coming in so early. I dont know if you slept at all. It all melts together. I dont look like i slept. You look great. Back with more morning joe after this. If youre approaching 65. Smart move. Because buzzed driving is drunk driving. Mika, the further we go in the show and we are 38 minutes in, you are more convinced donald trump politically won the debate last night and by 9 00 you may have him elected president of the United States. No, look, i just think she did everything she was supposed to do and she did a great job and checked all of the boxes, all of them, and had a few moments with zingers, and i think he connected and there were seven times where he said things that really connect with the where the emotions of a lot of American People are right now, and not just his people but certain types of voters. Its 48 of the country. And willie, mika used a boxing analogy, and then mika i forgot i didnt say that. But there were flurries, again, and i noticed this especially after the first fox debate, where they just secured trump. Trump would get those 20second zingers about Rosie Odonnel and thats all that got played in the news the next couple days, and by the end of the week he won the debate where he faired poorly. It was the whole debate. I watched. I thought, shes doing great but my Blood Pressure kept going up every time he spoke and i heard things that i know work. I hear it over dinner tables everywhere i go. A little bit of chop in your spaghetti. This is waerld. Plus, the circus is coming to town. Oh, look at the elections. Mark mckinnon and mark halperin, they join the table next. Ad the . Ad the . Were good. Okay. What if a Million People download the new app . Were good. Five million . Good. We scale on demand. Im hall of famer jerry west and my life is basketball. But that doesnt stop my afib from leaving me at a higher risk of stroke. Thatd be devastating. I took warfarin for over 15 years until i learned more about oncedaily xarelto. A latest generation blood thinner. Then i made the switch. Xarelto® significantly lowers the risk of stroke in people with afib not caused by a heart valve problem. It has similar effectiveness to warfarin. Warfarin interferes with vitamin k and at least six blood clotting factors. Xarelto® is selective targeting one critical factor of your bodys natural clotting function. For people with afib currently well managed on warfarin, there is limited information on how xarelto and warfarin compare in reducing the risk of stroke. Like all blood thinners, dont stop taking xarelto without talking to your doctor, as this may increase your risk of a blood clot or stroke. While taking you may bruise more easily, and it may take longer for bleeding to stop. Xarelto may increase your risk of bleeding if you take certain medicines. Relto can cause serious, and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Get help right away for unexpected bleeding, unusual bruising or tingling. If you have had spinal anesthesia while on xarelto watch for back pain or any nerve or muscle related signs or symptoms. Do not take xarelto if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. Tell your doctor before all planned medical or dental procedures. Before starting xarelto tell your doctor about any conditions, such as kidney, liver or bleeding problems. To help protect yourself from a stroke, ask your doctor about xarelto. Theres more to know. Xarelto. Im running a company, and my obligation right now is to do well for myself and my family and self and companies and employees, and thats what i do, but what she doesnt say is the tens of thousands of people that are unbelievably happy, and i will give you an example, opening up something on penn avenue by the next house, so if i dont get there one way, i will get there another. We have the show time the circus. Who would promote their business at a president ial debate . Product placement. Fighting for us. He showed restraint. He did not. Nbc news political director and moderator of meet the press, chuck todd. Chuck, score it. I think its appropriate that the circus is here. I mean its impossible to predict, isnt it . It was incredibly surreal. It was not a traditional debate. Nothing about it that was traditional. So my only concern is wondering whether we whether the public who may be some of whom may never have gone through or watched a general election play itself out, and whether they view this as normal or not normal, and i think thats going to tell us a lot about the power of trumps message at the end of the day, but, you know, after the first 15 or 20, i thought, okay, this will be an interesting debate, and then it was clear, his lack of preparation showed itself, because it was that last 45 minutes of debate that i just thought, what happened . He sort of wondered off into a field, didnt he . He had a strong first half, on trade, and the second half on birther and taxes and women. The race in 1999 with clay williams, donald trump keep saying people dont care about taxes and the point he makes is true, if he can beat the system, but nobody likes the idea of somebody with a lot of money not taking any taxes at all. I will be interested to see the reaction to that. And mark halperin, he talked about this before and expanding on it a little bit, when she was talking about the housing crisis, and she crushed the World Economy and he was rooting for it and he said thats good business. I wouldnt be shocked to see that in a tv ad in the next week or so from the clinton side. He said a lot of things last night, they can spin all they want, and he did have good moments. I think his best moments were good enough, and he spent too much time talking about things that are not in his message, and no debate adviser under traditional rules would argue thats the right thing to do and you change the subject. Yeah, except these are not the same rules. Every time he did explain things, he was proud about the business and proud about the people who work for him and proud about the money makes, and these are things people like about him, and every time he turned to Hillary Clinton, he pointed out things and then wrapped a good narrative, this has been the same for think years. Yeah, worked for him. I hear you on that, but, look, i thought these guys spent so much time talking about themselves, though. If you think about it, the last half of the debate, did we get do we understand what their policies are when it comes to criminal Justice Reform . Do we understand what their policies are when it comes to isis . Trump took the bait every time. Anytime she did every little thing, he felt the need to explain the comment, and jump in and say, wrong, wrong, and no doubt he did not watch himself on camera on mute ever, because the split screen look, i agree with you, mika. People that were for him loved the instincts of him, and what did he do to add to his vote total last night, to the group of voters, moderate republicans eventually . Thats his swing voter right now. They are not with him yet. What did he do last night to win them over . I think i have an answer to that. Answer that question. What did donald trump do to add to his group of supporters . My judgment would be nothing. Zero. Not at all. I dont think she delivered a knockout blow by any means, but i dont think he took a single step closer to the presidency last night. I think the things that have been said, i think he had a good 15 minutes and there are sound bites that will live and reflect his message and he spent most of the night on defense and she spent most of the night on offense, and when he talks about her stamina, and is she frail . Is she sick . She doesnt look frail or sick he seemed to have an energy problem. Its only an issue because of the fact people have been talking about her health for the past three weeks, and she came out looking in perfect, and he sniffled throughout the debate. I dont think you can score it any other way that she won it. If they are honest, they said it was your first time doing it and shes expienc and lets work hard to improve for the next one. This is not the first time. How could he hold up under a sustained 90 minutes. He became a low energy trump. You have been waiting to say that for a long time. Thank you very much hold on. We end on low energy trump. Do you think the polls are going to change . I think this is a classic case of reinforcement i think it depends on the News Coverage over the next several days, if it settles in she beat him badly, he will not. I think the media will be too afraid to say that because they were wrong the media is saying it. Any change . I think there could be a small change, and heres why. One of the things we have seen in debates in the past is that you can get a success out of rallying your own supporters. She had problems with includism in the democratic base, and women last night will be rallied by some of the things she did onstage and some of the mistakes he did onstage, and the way she attacked him on the subject, and the birther thing, that will happen her africanamerican vote. I wish you were right, but you are wrong. If there was a draw, donald trump comes out the winner, and tie goes i think the polls are going to jump. And charles krauthammer, and a tie goes to the khchallenger wins. Coming up next, we have experts when morning joe is coming right back. Isnt it time to let the real you shine through . Join the debate by saying more crazy things. Theres nothing crazy about not letting our Companies Bring this is secretary clintons two minutes. Lets start the clock again, lester. Welcome back to morning j joe. With us we have mike barnicle, and steve schmitt, and john heilman, and in washington, editor at the fix of the washington post, chris. How did trump do last night . Not very well. In these republican primary debates, what those debates were about is 16 or 17 people on the stage saying put me in the game, and i will crush her if i get her oneonone. And so the Republican Voters chose to put in the game, and went into that debate unprepared. He begins the debate for 45 minutes even though his style is off and he is puffing and interrupting and is rude, and hes making a point, you are the politician, these trade deals have been terrible and they cost jobs and put Hillary Clinton into a position where he is defending the trade deals, but at the 45minute mark, he was like an old man runner trying to get around the track, and he ran out of gas and steam, and slumping over the podium, exhausted, and that exhaustion gave way to almost an incoherence. Is that like the Foreign Policy. We get to the black lives matter questions on police and race and she manhandled him on taxes and contractors, and then we get to the National Security portion of this, and it just descends into a mountain of molt and gibberish. He is talking about Nuclear Weapons in one breath, and launches an attack on Rosie Odonnel, and he says we all know she deserves it and certainly the qualities we want to see in the most powerful person in the world you said something you compared him to sarah palin. If you go back and watch the debate with sarah palin in 2008, she was monumentally more fluent and prepared. She looked like Henry Kissinger compared to him on these National Security issues last night. I think theres a profound policy point that should send shivers down the spaoeupine of person that cares about National Security, and thats on the question of him talking about our alliances, japan and south korea, and he says these countries need to pay us protection like the United States would be a gangster nation and offers its protection, and he talked about macarthur yeah. Macarthur, he said the guns have fallen silent, a great tragedy ended and he delivers the eloquent marks, and what he says is since the beginning of mankind, we have sought ways to find methods for peace, treaties, international organizations, and obligations, and they all failed, world war ii cost the lives of 80 Million People, and the point macarthur makes, if we dont get it right, the next event is armageddon with the nuclear age. Heres his point about macarthur. Just go to her website, and she tells us how to fight isis on her website and i dont think the general would like that too much. At least i have a plan. No, you are telling the enemy everything you want to do. No wonder you have been fighting isis your entire adult life. Thats go to the Fact Checkers, get to work. Your entire adult life . What is really interesting, the Republican Party long stood in peoples minds strong on National Security, stronger than the democrats and in Donald Trumps description on what he wants the United States now to be with regard to the rest of the world, nations that have been our allies for decades and he wants them to turn them into bone asarah in the god father, coming to us, i beg you for justice, godfather. He has a fundamental misunderstanding, not only of history but what the United States means around the world. And too many people think that we give foreign aid just to be nice. Yeah. Or that we help other countries militarily just because we want to be good people. We do it for very selfish reasons as well. Strategic alliances. Also making sure that countries are more stable. Theres a strategy. I think you are all over thinking it. We will talk about it with chris. Trump was asked to defend his recent comments about Hillary Clintons appearance and health. I just left philadelphia and detroit, and you have seen me, i have been all over the place, and you decided to stay home, and thats okay. But i will tell you, i have been all over i think donald just criticized me for preparing for this debate. And, yes, i did. And you know what else i prepared for . I prepared to be president , and i think thats a good thing. Mr. Trump, for five years you perpetuated earlier this month you said she doesnt have, quote, a president ial look. She is standing here right now, and what did you mean by that . She doesnt have the look. She doesnt have the stam atphau. I said she doesnt have the stamina, and i dont believe she has the stamina. To be president of this country you need tremendous stamina. You have to be able to negotiate on trade deals and you have to be able to negotiate thats right, with japan, with saudi arabia. You have so many Different Things you have to be able to do and i dont believe that hillary has the stamina. Well, as soon as he travels to 112 countries and negotiates a peace deal, a ceasefire, a release of dissidents and opening of new opportunities in nations around the world, or even spends 11 hours testifying in front of a congressional committee, he can talk to me aboustamina. He tried to switch from looks to stamina, but this is a man who has called women pigs, slobs and dogs, and someone who has said pregnancy is an inconvenience to employers i never said that. And he said women dont deserve equal pay unless they do as good a job as men, and he loves beauty contests and he loves supporting them and hanging around them and he called this woman miss piggie, and then he called her miss housekeeping because she was latina. She has a name where did you find her . She has become a u. S. Citizen and you can bet shes going to vote this november. Okay. How ironic, willie, that he is hammering her on stamina, and most everybody says, again, he sort of wandered off into the field last night . Thats what i was going to say. Hes make the point she doesnt have stamina, and she clearly recovered from her pneumonia, and hes the one that looks tired and drinking the water. He borrowed little marcos as he called him, his water supply. She didnt show any sign he had a well spring up below because he was drinking. What you saw was basic debate preparation. A point comes up and she is prepared with antidote and fact, and thats not exceptional. He was not prepared as something as the symbol about his support for the war in iraq. He got dug in on the howard stern interview, and he could have said i made a flippant comment to howard stern, and you, actually, as a senator cast a vote. His advisers were frustrated he didnt do that. Mika, this is to you, and its legitimate, do you think what we say, at the end we dont get Trump Supporters and we dont understand why they think he won last night . I hope you are all right. I really do. I just i feel like i was watching, you know, the sort of gender differences that i talk up a lot to women about in job interviews. A guy walks in there and he is blustering, and he says a bunch of incoherent things, and hes trumping himself up, excuse the pun, and hes talking about this guy, and hes been around 30 years and what has he done for you and look what i have done in my life and half of it is not true or half is manipulated to fit the moment, but the delivery is confident, affective, blustering, completely out there, and comfortable. Hes comfortable being like that. I dont think we should argue whether or not people like that, and we see he has a following. She was perfect. But sometimes that doesnt matter. Especially when it comes to men and women go into job interviews. How do you score it last night, chris . I think that on every conventional basis, clinton won. Willies point on preparedness, and i think you can recite a lot of policy proposals, and preparedness in debates is about finding places to get in about your opponent, and his basic inability to get off of birtherism and his taxes, and the iraq war, three things he does not want to be talking about, he spent 15 or 20 minutes talking about this, and to mikas point, i think its really important, the thing you see in that debate is hilalary clinton is preparedness, and donald trump is emotion and heart. Right . The intellectual match in terms of the policy proposals, but in terms of readiness and preparedness for that debate, its not in the ballpark, and he struggled at times to fill the two minutes that he was given to talk, right, just threw things in there. And his appeal the Fact Checkers say hes lying, and the people that like him dont care about that. They like that he sounds and looks tough and the despite of what he says is simply not accurate, they believe he is a truth teller and talking straight to them, and his appeal is not based on what people like me or Fact Checkers check, its based on the gut. Lets stick with the gut. What is your view of the split screen showing both candidates all do i think its a good idea or who did it benefit . In the end i dont think it matters that much, and again, we were talking about conventional versus unconventional, and shes very aware of the split screen and does not make a lot of exaggerated faces, and shes not doing the cartoon face, and these are all things we saw trump do in the republican nomination, and i dont know that will be the main reason he had in my view not a very good debate last night, but its again to go to preparation, and it seems as though in a lot of conventional ways, he just decided the only rules that apply to these debate performances is his own view, and we talked about him as being one of the most tv savvy presences as a president ial nominee in a long time, and possibly ever, and he did not seem to me acutely aware of how some of the things he did with his face might look. I just think quickly to johns point, and i think the split screen favors her. Look at the split screen. She looks confident. She looks healthy. She looks poised and she doesnt look tired, and he is slumping and sighing, and especially as the debate war on and you look at the two of them, and people dont watch necessarily for policy proposals and they watch does this look like a president , somebody i can be comfortable with . She does not look like she has a stamina problem, and thats why his attack on that did not work. She looked healthier and better than he did in the debate. Its remarkable how the standards changed so dramatically. Donald trump, contorting his face and sniffing and grunting and probably not going to have any impact at all. Al gore sites three times with george w. Bush, and its a defining moment. We have been talking about donald trump for a year, and mika and i from the moment he descended the escalator literally have not disagreed on the question of how is trump doing against where the conventional wisdom was. You have not. And i think what will happen you think you disagree on this . I think he will pay a consequence for this debate, and came down about two or three points on the National Average and thats going to spread, a point and a half, two points, his momentum, right, and his momentum over the last month where he has closed a 10point gap where the momentum on the polls was on his side. He will now she will spread a point or two, and significantly, when you look at some of the states where hes in the game because of where gary johnson is, gary johnson voters are going to look at the debate and say, this was my parking place and i dont particularly like either one of them, and they are the two most unpopular candidates running for president in American History by the polling, but one of those two is going to be the president , and i am going to make my vote matter, and they are not going to vote for donald trump on the bases of that, and you will see the gary johnson vote come down and if he does it again in the debate you will see it come down further and then in the third debate, and it will come down more from that. And thats going to accrue to Hillary Clinton. When you go from a 2. 3 average up and it goes to 4 outside the margin of error, thats a significant lead, and the 100 Million People seeing this, its going to impact the race. Judging from what we have heard last night from trumps people, people very close to donald trump, they believe that he came up way short. I have not talked to one yet very close to him that have not been very disappointed by his failure to perform at just a basic competent standard. Yeah, if you take out sean hannity, on fox news they were tough on him last night, and i ran in to trump and Clinton Campaign, and the clinton people were not spinning and they thought their candidate won, and the Trump Campaign said to me, what did you think . What did you think . Being tentative, not even making a case trump won the debate. And on the phone afterwards into the evening, they were telling people their guy lost. Yep. Chris, steve, thank you both. Still ahead, did Hillary Clintons talking points last night land . The kind of plan donald has put forth would be trickle down economics all over again, and i call it trumped up trickle down. It is, as i said, trumped up trickle down. Trickle down did not work. It got us into the mess we were in in 2008 and 2009. We will talk to our chief strategist and later we will ask the experts, and president of the council on foreign relations, richard huff. They both join us. You are watching morning joe, and well be right back. You loved brad. And then you totaled him. You two had been through everything together. Two boyfriends, three jobs. There was no knockout punch by Hillary Clinton, in so much as telling everything she learned about donald trump, and she would need to force him to make a huge mistake to be a headline and she did not. That was the assessment of Trumps Campaign manager, kellyanne conway. And now joining us is joel benenson, and an msnbc political analyst, eugene robinson. Good to have you both onboard. And we asked kellyanne the same thing, it remains status quo. I think what you saw was surprising. He came onstage grossly unprepared and he unravelled in the course of the debate and not just ran out of steam but became completely unravelled. He came out there unprepared to discuss issues, unprepared to talk to the American People about their lives, and just seen flailing at various points in a way that i have not seen in a president ial debate, and so i think if the test was here to be president ial, to look president ial, he failed. The test is not here, and by the way, your sentiments are unanimous around the table except for me, im concerned. This is a different ball game. The rules are different. Arent you concerned what you are seeing about what happened last night does not necessarily no, mika, i hear your point, and he has a base of voters that i think will be quite pleased with what he did, but i think for any voters out there and we are talking about a small group now Going Forward who are on the fence and watching and taking the measure of these two people, and it was night and day of what they saw on the stage. Somebody who was prepared for every end of the job, from getting the economics working and keeping the country safe, and then incoherent thoughts sentence after sentence, and for people sitting on the fence, that was what they saw last night was one person ready to do it and was not. Go ahead, gene. Mika, i have been with you and we have been together all along when people said finally this time, donald trump yeah, hes going down. People are going to abandon donald trump. Im not under the illusion his supporters will abandon him, but it was an awful night for donald trump, it really was. And the telling thing was, you have to pick the moment from the array of bad moments. One of my favorites was the tax section of the debate in which, you know, she said you didnt pay any federal taxes and he said that makes me smart. I dont think in the eyes of a lot of voters that makes him smart. I dont think that makes rich people smart they didnt pay federal taxes, and i dont think people like that and thats one of a number of moments that was really bad. I hope you are right. And he also praised himself for pushing the president to release his birth certificate. The birth certificate was produced in 2011 and you continue to tell the story and question the president s legitimacy in 2012 and 13, 14, and recently in january. Nobody was pressing it and i figured you would ask the question about it, and i was the one that got him to produce the birth certificate, and i think i did a good job. I think i did a great job and Great Service not only for the country but even for the country in getting him to produce his birth certificate. Secretary clinton . Well, just listen to what you heard. Clearly as donald admitted, he knew he would stand on the debate stage and lester holt would ask us questions, so he tried to put the whole racist birther lie to bed, but it cant be dismissed that easily. He has really started his political activity based on this racist lie that our first black president was not an american citizen, and there was absolutely no evidence for it but he persisted, and he persisted year after year because some of his supporters, people that he was trying to bring into his fold, apparently believed it or wanted to believe it. First of all, thats absolutely true, and the way she counters to him was delivered perfectly. Mark halperin, you have a question for joel. Joel, i know you are happy how your candidate performed but how will your campaign be measuring whether the debate will influence how voters are thinking about the two candidates . Mark, i think you go into debates and you come out of them with the same strategy, which is keep talking to the American People about what you care about, what you want to do for them, and i think we are appropriate to draw a contrast with your opponent, which we have been doing fairly regularly during the campaign, and i think last night in the things that gene just talked about and mika discussed in terms of the clip she showed, two issues that really bother people about this man, the birther for him to spend time last night talking about something that is perhaps one of his biggest negatives that he is perceived as intolerant and he wanted to spend more time talking about that, just, you know, it makes for fertile territory to expose him for the divisive candidate he is, which is one of the things that bothers people, particularly swing voters, and continuing to shine a spotlight in the ways he is unprepared because of his lack of comprehension of how we deal with things in the world, and people want somebody that knows how to bring people together, and they know its not going to be easy, but you have to listen to somebody that respect each other and works with people to get things done. And last night, she had a brief answer about the emails, and donald trump said it was not a mistake, and was that the quick answer. To some bg accident its what she has been saying for a while, and you have a big audience and you have an opportunity to say to them what you have been saying for quite a while. She said the same thing on another network i dont know how many weeks ago, and she has been asked about this quite a bit, and most people know what happened with her emails generally. Yeah, her approach seemed to be a short statement and get back to it. She has been asked about it over the last six and eight weeks and this is where she has been, and theres not a lot of new information for people on this, and lets address i and say what you have to say and get back to the issues people are focusing in. That is a clintonian problem, and saying it was a mistake, it was deliberate. You understand the word mistake is perhaps not correct and not accurate and not telling the truth. When you it was a deliberate division that was a mistake. She said that the first time she addressed this, i think, 15 months ago. One other scene last night we had on the air, footage of the two candidates and their families leaving the arena, and the contrast could not have been sharper, and i think it told you how they perceived the debate, and the clintons were all smiling, and they know how to do that, and the trump family could not have been glummer. I could be the odd man out here. Clintons campaign, senior strategist, joel benenson, thank you so much. Gene robinson, thank you as well. I hope the Fact Checkers are turning up the volume and working hard. Donald trump supported the war wrong, wrong. I know clintons call to visit her website might have seemed awkward and might have worked, and this is a google track, and heres google trends after the debate. Thats all 50 states. That would be all 50 states. I guess it worked. Okay. Thats a good sign. Are you trying to convince yourself . He loves beauty contests, supporting them and hanging around them, and he called this woman miss piggie, and then he called her miss housekeeping because she was latina. Where did you find this . She has a name, and she has become a u. S. Citizen and you can bet oh, really. Shes going to vote this november. The very last question, when she brought up the person that came i know that person. That person was a Miss Universe person, and she was the worst we ever had. The worst. The absolutely worst. She was impossible. And she was a Miss Universe contestant and ultimately a winner who they had a tremendously difficult time with as Miss Universe. She was the winner and she gained a massive amount of weight, and it was it was a real problem. Willie . That didnt help at all. She gained a lot of weight. From calling her a housekeeper to fat now. And she was a terrible problem because she gained weight . Hes gained weight during the campaign. Oh, oh, my god. Please, america. I am begging you. I am sitting here and gaining weight. Richard isnt he on treadmills all the time . Yes. Joining us now, former treasury official and morning joe economic analyst. I didnt bring charts today because i thought there was so much to do. I have a few here. Willie, i made a mistake, i said that richard was Donald Trumps adviser of Foreign Policy, and hes not, and just more specifically on Nuclear Related guys, i cant believe what he just said. What do you do with that . Thats the problem. He basically said somebody was the worst because she got fat. This story was out earlier in the campaign, may, june, Something Like that, and it was out there and didnt blow up too big, and he just piled on a few minutes ago on national tv. He did not try to clean it up. He tried to reinforce the point, yeah, i called her miss piggie because she put on the weight. And also miss housekeeping. Thats according to miss machata. Anyone with any sense about this could be its getting a little old. Its describes the problem. Its not an accurate one. I would not do for a strike, and once the Nuclear Alternative happens, its over, and i cant take anything off the take. Richard hawes, many thought it was bedtime for donald and he was very tired. Could you make anything coherently draw any coherent trace any coherent threads on his discussions on the Nuclear Policy . On the nuclear he seemed to confuse three things, one was the first strike when the united states would use enough Nuclear Weapons to knock out another, and the other is first use, and then he said he would not take anything off the table, and first choose was first natos policy, and we didnt want to say we would use Nuclear Weapons if we had to. Donald trump also talked about the nato partnership and how to approach it from the businesstype of perspective. Watch. I was asked on a major show, what do you think of native. You have to understand, i am a business person and i have common sense, and i said, i will tell you, i have not given lots of thought to nato, but number one, many are not paying their fair share and that bothers me because we are defending them and they should be paying us what they are supposed to be paying by treaty and contract. Words matter when you run for president , and they really matter when you are president. I want to reassure our allies in japan and south korea and elsewhere that we have mutual defense treaties and we will honor them. It is essential that americas word be good, and so i know that this campaign has caused some questioning and some worries on the part of many leaders across the globe. I have talked with a number of them. I want to, on behalf of myself, and i think on behalf of a majority of the American People say that, you know, our word is good. You said this is the part of Foreign Policy that trump gets the most wrong. Why . Mr. Trump focuses on what he seeses the direct cost of the Foreign Policy doesnt see it as a investment. He doesnt see it as a return, the fact that all of these countries are developing Nuclear Weapons on their own, and europe has been stable and asia after vietnam has been stable and this is an environment in which the United States trades, invests and visits. The return on american Foreign Policy has been one of the great bargains of modern history, and they will say 70 plus years after world war ii, what a remarkable return. And you start with the marshall plan, and basically it prevented world war iii because of that, and camp davids in 1979 avoided a ground war for 30 years in the middle east and a lot of that had to do with aid to israel and the saudis, and yes, we are paying money out but we are not having our economy destroyed. The cold war, it stayed cold, didnt get hot, and the last i checked, we won it. Its a remarkable achievement for american Foreign Policy. There was a lot to unpack on the economy yesterday, including trump making the accusation against the head of the federal reserve, and take a listen. Were in a bubble and the only thing that looks good is the stock market but if you raise rates even a little bit that will come crashing down, and we are in a fat and ugly bubble, and we have a fed doing political things, janet yellen of the fed, and the fed is doing political by keeping Interest Rates at this level and the day obama goes off and he leaves and goes out to the golf course for the rest of his life, when they raise Interest Rates you will see bad things happen, because the fed is not doing their job, and the fed is being more political than secretary clinton. Channeling ron paul talking about the fed. But this big and fat hes got fat on his mind for some reason and maybe he thinks he picked up too much weight in the campaign, and the big fat ugly bubble is giving us 2 growth. Were at 2 right now. Sometimes 1 . Thats not a bubble. Thats the point. What trump was saying that the fed should do would make growth slower and not faster. Yeah, take it down to zero. It could well do that. Attacking the fed is something that Major Party Candidates simply do not do historically out of deference and its something fringe Party Candidates do, and so somebody watching would say why shouldnt we attack the fed . They are the most powerful institution in the america . You could criticize the fed if you dont like something they do. Greenspan was hammered in 2008 for doing exactly what his successors were doing. Attacking the fed as an institution, its like attack the Supreme Court and you can do that and you have 14 people there trying totd the job, and what trump wants the fed to do is contrary to any sane economic plan at this point. I think steve can help us, and immediately after that debate, the markets went up. Yeah, even during the debate, asia markets were covered and the mexican pace yo rallied. Because markets were sure Hillary Clinton was doing well . Markets would be destabilized by a trump victory. They certainly believe her politics are saying. What didnt get a lot of attention, they got to articulate a different vision of what their economic policies would be, and he wanted to try and start the economy from the top, and massive deficits, and Hillary Clinton is talking about raising taxes on the rich in order to Fund Infrastructure and education and all these visions, but the may be lost in the atmosphere. Does that make you feel better some. Yes, please. Besides Hillary Clintons answer on the importance of the alliance, she did better than she did in the commander in chief forum. Much better. What she did was make america comfortable with the fact if she is elected, would be okay. That to me was what she needed to accomplish last night. I think her performance was stellar. She was perfect. They have merchandise, im checking here. Based off what he just said. What are you doing . They had a baseball cap, willie and i are going to wear it tomorrow. Make america comfortable. Im going to get the camo. What about you . Xxl. I think her performance was stellar, perfect, pitch perfect. I also think sometimes the woman doesnt always get the job. But she was pitch perfect. Pitch perfect. Steve rattner, richard haass, thank you. Coming up, perhaps its a bad sign when youre blaming the microphone when do the briefings start today . Well explain when morning joe comes back in a moment. Re. Building a jet engine. Weve been hearing so much about how youre a digital company, so you can see our confusion. Ge is an Industrial Company that actually builds worldchanging machines. Machines that can also communicate digitally. Like robots. Did you build that robot . Thats not a robot, thats my coworker earl. He builds jet engines with his human hands. What about that robot . That is a vending machine, ricky. John, give him a dollar. I just saved thousands on in less than a minute, i found out how much home i can afford. I like how you shop for loans the same way you shop for flights online. I didnt realize that lendingtree you can save money on almost any sort of loan. I consolidated my Credit Card Debt with a personal loan. I found a new credit card with 0 interest for 15 months. You just shop, compare, and save, and its all free. Go to lendingtree right now and start saving. [music] jess hey look, its those guys. Shawn look at those pearly whites, man. [music] bud whoa, cute shawn shutup. Jess are you good to drive . Shawn im fine. [music] [police siren] jess how many did you have . Shawn i should be fine. Jess you should be . Officer sir, go ahead and step out of the vehicle for me. Shawn yes, sir. Bud see ya, buddy. Today, shawns got a hearing, well see how it goes. Good luck so, it turns out buzzed driving and drunk driving, theyre the same thing and it costs around 10,000. So not worth it. I had a problem with a microphone that didnt work. I dont know if you saw that in the room, but my microphone was terrible. I wonder was it set up that way on purpose. My microphone in the room, they couldnt hear me. It was going on and off. Which isnt exactly great. I wonder if it was set up that way, but it was terrible. When i tested it, it was beautiful, like an hour before. I said what a great mike. It was much lower than hers. Okay. I dont want to believe in conspiracy theories, of course, but it was much lower than hers and it was crackling. And thats donald trump today. Did you notice . It was Crystal Clear on tv. I cant speak to being in the room. But it came across on tv. Today, donald trump and Hillary Clinton are back on the campaign trail following last nights big debate. Much more ahead on their first headtohead showdown, and well speak to Trumps Campaign manager. Morning joe is back in a moment. Upgrade your phone system and learn how you could save at vonage. Com business announcer theyll test you. Try to break your will. But however loud the loudness gets. However many cheese puffs may fly. Youre the driver. The one in control. Stand firm. Just wait. [click] and move only when you hear the click that says theyre buckled in for the drive. Never give up till they buckle up. In all fairness to secretary clinton, yes, is that okay . Good. I want you to be very happy. Its very important to me. Donald, i know you live in your own reality, but that is not the facts. I think my strongest asset, maybe by far, is my temperament. I have a winning temperament. I know how to win. She does not. Secretary clinton. I think donald just criticized me for preparing for this debate. And yes, i did. And you know what else i prepared for. I prepared to be president. And i think thats a good thing. And that was the moment right there. Good morning, everyone. Its tuesday, september 27th. Welcome to morning joe. Well, lets look. High stakes duel on long island. The daily news says faceoff of the nation. I think this one the new york post, very interesting. They have been favorable for donald trump, even them saying don not out, but trump stumbles in the first debate. Two debaters on the attack. Two debaters on the attack. A lot to talk about today. A lot to get through. We have veteran columnist and msnbc contributor mike barnicle. Former Communications Director for president george w. Bush, nicolle wallace, up all night covering this. Managing editor of Bloomberg Politics and cohost of with all due respect that airs at decision 00 p. M. On msnbc, mark halperin. Good to have you all on board. What a night. What did you think . Its pretty obvious, you judge it by queens bury rules, clinton won it going away. Every time i started judging it by the old rules, i said wait a second. We have done this before. Im with you, nicolle. I thought South Carolina was absolutely the worst performance i have ever seen in my life. He did everything that should have cost him that state. He ended up winning it massively going away. So you just cant judge these debates the same way you have judged debates in the past. But theres no doubt that he repeated himself repeatedly at the beginning of the debate, and at the end of the debate, like everybody else noticed, he had this major dropoff in energy and sort of rambling and talking about Rosie Odonnell. Definitely those moment. And i think overall for im going to say us, and i put that in quotes, a large group of people, i think probably we all think hillary won. But my Blood Pressure kept going up throughout the whole i could not stop watching until the very end because there was something telling me hes going to do quite well out of this. I cant put my finger on it. He was not as bad as you would expect him to be given the lack of preparation or this or that or whatever happened in the past. He was not as bad as he was in a lot of republican debates. I think he said things that touch on not just what primary voters think but people are feeling on a number of levels. I just wouldnt be surprised if he came out doing better in the polls after this. And thats why she was not as great as she could have been. Thats really why i was saying what i was saying, the rules. You judge by the old rules that have always been applied to every politician thats ever debated. And you would say Hillary Clinton won this hands down. But there were flurries that he had, almost like a boxing match. There were flurries that he had where he just jabbed her and kept jabbing her, and just kind of, you know so much that he threw against the wall that she kind of didnt know where to go. Pounded home the point that she was the political insider. He was the political outsider. Yes. It was a rigged system. And for people just walking through the living room and not sitting there for 90 minutes, or mo importantly, seeing those clips today. They may think that trump won the debate. We learned a long time ago to stop judging donald trump by conventional political rules. We should have learned that a long time ago. Your instincts tell you if you were watching that as a blind taste test. Who was more informed, woo was better prepared, who was more composed on the stage, who looked like they should be president , i dont think it was close. It was Hillary Clinton, but again, donald trump has shown us his message sometimes is obviously not about being prepared or having information. Its about an emotional connection to voters. Its the male female job interview. The male goes in there, blusters, doesnt even tell the truth, and the chances are he might get the job. The woman goes in there completely prepared and makes a lot of sense and has a perfect interview. Nicolle. I was struck, i watched it in here, we held her to unrealistically exceedingly high standards and she exceeded them. I mean, i thought she did everything she should have done. More than everything she should have done. It was a performance if you work in politics, you had to stand back and admire. Right. And it was more than preparation. I mean, i thought she was quick on her feet. I thought she was charming. I thought she was funny. But this is a parallel universe where he also came out still breathing. And where donald trump is concerned, that is adequate. I watched the South Carolina debate on a jet blue flight and was literally screaming. I was like, oh, my god. And thank god you can text on the jet blue flight because i texted everybody and said its over. Trumps campaign is over. Not only did he win the state running away but he was thought of the next morning to win the debate. Im told last night he was sharing with his advisers he thought he won the debate last night. No doubt, mark halperin, anybody who knows donald trump knows that donald trump knows that he won the debate. And will be quoting drudge and every other online poll that you can judge. There were a couple of other snap polls, cnn found that actually Scientific Study found that Hillary Clinton absolutely ran away with the debate. 62 to 27 . Donald trump wont be sharing that poll. He will be sharing the drudge reports online poll, which showed 80 said that he won the debate. But as daily caller tweeted, the drudge poll on the debate looks like the president ial Election Results in saddam husseins iraq. I dont know if i would say that. But there was this dichotomy. The fact that you have 80 of the people revved up enough to go to those polls, suggests something about the level of intensity as well. I mean, throughout the primaries, it was time would have one of these online polls as well. Well, i mean, i dont think theres anything donald trump could have done last night that wouldnt have caused his supporters to say he won the debate. The good news for him, i think, if youre looking good news for him is theres two more debates. Good hes smart, hell prepare a lot more than he did. Hes not going to do that, mark, but do you think. Answer the question we have been knocking around the table. Do you think he is going to suffer politically . Or suffering in the polls for anything that any of us saw last night . Because i dont think most of us around the table think he will. I think its, as you suggested, its a fools errand to say theres going to be some linear connection between the way elites judge she won the debate easily and changes in the poll. I think hes going to get a couple days bad News Coverage and he has to decide if hes going to go around today saying i clearly won the debate. Can i challenge you here . I want us to be a little more specific in our language, because it used to be we would talk about elites. Talk about us, talk about people in washington, d. C. That look at donald trump a certain way. Its expanded well beyond that. Its collegeeducated republican voters. Many of them support donald trump but i know a lot of them who do not and they watch performances like last night and wand to shield their childrens eyes. And make them think, no, you need to actually be able to work harder, prepare harder, be able to articulate better, and basically hold yourself to a higher standard than that. This is not just sort of a manhattan elite bubble that says Hillary Clinton vastly outperformed donald trump last night. I would guess thats most well educated americans that were watching the debate last night. Judging by any objective standard. Right, and yet on the other hand, well see if theres a linear connection between what happened last night and the polls. I think its not just sort of formal debate rules and the way an elite or educated person might judge a debate. He spent much more time than she did on the defensive on issues where a more experienced debater would have turned the question and not gone down in the weeds defending himself across the board. She was the better debater on points. She had executed more of her strategy. Early on, mark, he was hammering her pretty hard and hammering her again with there were a couple of lines you were telling me about that we were talking about this morning about he hammered her again on being an insider. It was very, very effective. Thats the clip that lowinformation voters see today, theyre going to say thats my guy. When he came in the spin room afterward, which was an unprecedented thing for a general election candidates to do, thats the theme he wanted to reemphasize, this notion she had been in washington for decades and hadnt gotten fundamental change enacted, but there were too many long stretches of the evening where he wasnt talking about that theme, particularly after the first 20 minutes. I dont think he helped himself gain new voters on the line, but he did help do damage. I mean, he was pretty terrible. I just feel like i know, nicolle. Really bad. Im sorry. Im really tired. Not a perfect world. But let me just say you know what you sound like . Like your College Roommate really likes a guy and hes come in in the seventh night in the row. And hes sleeping with every girl in the sororitsorority. And heshes like, isnt he wonderful . Youre like, i just cant hear you say hes wonderful anymore. Im sorry. Yes, he got in a couple good lines. Like, saying she was for trade for a long time, reenforced the other good line there, there were three good lines. One was, yes, you have been there 30 years. One was her record on trade, and if you have this economic angst and youre part of his basis, but all those lines spoke directly to his base, and i largely expect his base to stay with him today. I dont think it spoke just to the base, nicolle. Were no longer fighting over the base. Lets look. I dont think this poll numbers will go up because he was so bad that nobody knew will like him after last night. Theres a whole world out there that is very weary from the past 30 years. No, a whole world that is weary from the past 30 yearrom democrats and republicans letting them down. I think he spoke to them. And in one of the more policydriven exchanges, donald trump called for the renegotiation of trade deals and proactive measures to stop jobs from leaving the country. He invoked the north American Free trade agreement, and he seemed to put clinton on the defense over president obamas landmark trade deal. Now, you want to approve transpacific partnership. You were totally in favor of it and then you heard what i was saying how bad it was and said whei cant win that debate. You know if you win, you will approve that. Nothing will ever top nafta. That is adjust not accurate. I was against it once it was finally negotiated. And the terms were laid out. I wrote about that you called it the Gold Standard. You called it the Gold Standard of trade deals. You said its the finest deal you have ever seen. No. Then you heard what i said about it and you were against it. Donald, i know you live in your own reality, but that is not the facts. I did say i hoped it would be a good deal. But when it was negotiated not. Which i was not responsible for, i concluded it wasnt. Is it president obamas fault . Is it president obamas fault. Look, there secretary, is it president obamas fault . There are because hes pushing it. There are different views about whats good for our country, our economy, and our leadership in the world. Its been legend now for 16 years that poor rick lauzio got within three square miles of Hillary Clinton and this campaign melted down. There, Hillary Clinton was trying to complete a sentence and he got shouted down four times. 16 years later, i wonder, does that actually help donald trump, interrupting a woman four times. Yes, i think its a different ball game. I do, too. I dont really know where im getting this, just my overall gut feeling from watching the entire debate. She was amazing. She was really good. I just think that hes going to do quite well out of this. You dont know where you get it from . You get it from the 87 republican debates. I know what is appealing about him to the American People that follow him. Not just his movement, but others who are perhaps sick of whats happened over the past few decades. He got in some things there that go, yeah, exactly. Still ahead on morning joe, kellyann conway joins us. Why she says donald trump is guilty of answering the question asked. And later, mike murphy is here. Mike was modest in his appraisal of trump, kweeting trump starting to sound like the wildeyed guy on a bus. Well ask him whether the bus still that had same destination after last nights debate. First, here is bill karins with a check on the forecast. Good morning. The rain is exiting the northeast, meaning the airports will be improving and also the roads. Yesterday alt this time, we had incredible rainfall. Charlotte had flash flooding and san antonio was really nasty, too. We got these pictures in from this water rescue. Thats the ladder of a oh, almost fell back in. You can see his vehicle, the top of the car. Hes standing on the top of his car. He was rescued. Nice job there by our finest. As far as the forecast for the rest of today, we are going to be watching the heaviest rains exiting areas of the east. The southeast could deal with showers and thunderstorms from atlanta to charlotte to raleigh also in florida. The rain is going to redevelop. Today is a quiet day in the rest of the country, but tomorrow, were in for one of the biggest rainfall events in months in washington, d. C. , raleigh, especially the nations capital. This is going to last into thursday. It will be a washout, like 3 to 5 inches of rain. And heres our rainfall total map. This shows the pink here from the d. C. Area northward to harrisburg. Thats five inches of rain. A pretty significant event. Maybe isolated flash flooding with this. Up for unfortunately, new england doesnt get the rain. And the heat from the west and the fire and weather will continue. Temperatures still very warm in the 90s there, and the last thing, Hurricane Hunters today will be out here into this area of tropical disturbance, likely a tropical depression later today, and there are still signs this will be through the caribbean, possibly affecting the islands in the days ahead. The verdict is still out if it will hit near the u. S. Well have an update in the days ahead. Washington, d. C. , we have cleared out the rain, but watch out. Wednesday evening and all day thursday, a rainout for you. More morning joe when we come back. Tch this perfect couple. They were the embodiment of true love. Do you know Megan Hipwell . Together, were building a better california. It was russia that broke into the dnc. Shes saying russia, russia. Maybe it was. It could be russia, but it could also be china. Could also be lots of other people. It also could be somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds, okay. You dont know who broke in to dnc. But what did we learn with dnc . We learned that Bernie Sanders was taken advantage of by your people. By Debbie Wasserman schultz. Look what happened to her, but Bernie Sanders was taken advantage of. Whether that was russia, whether that was china, whether it was another country, we dont know, because the truth is, under president obama, we have lost control of things that we used to have control of. That was donald trump last night talking about i take the 400 willie, i feel laike that 400pound commet was directed straight at me. I feel like he practiced that with his team. I dont think so. Joining us now, Donald Trumps campaign manager, kellyanne conway. Admit, it was your line. I cant take credit for that. Thats spontaneous donald trump answering a question. What am i missing here . Dont look at me. Look at her. Im asking you guys and you can ask kellyanne. I dont think he didnt resonate well. I think he might have. Im sorry. Look, this is the bottom line. So kellyanne. Everybody is talking about as we have said before, you have judged this by all past debate starts, Hillary Clinton won. Most of us around the table believe that. But you dont judge donald trump by those standards. Do you think he connected with his base . Do you think he found new voters last night . I think he connected with the folks were hearing from in places like ohio, pennsylvania, michigan, who feel like their jobs have gone abroad. Because of nafta or because of what would be her tpp and other trade policies. Interesting you say that. The first part of the debate, i actually thought he wasnt debating for america, that he was actually, because he kept going back to trade, it almost felt like this debate was a midwest rust belt debate for him. Thats an issue he has heard many times from thousands of people on the stump. Who thought trade would be a burning issue in 2016, but it is. Im surprised when you go on the road and people talk about the trade immigration access is costing jobs in their local communities. That was great. I also feel that there was no knockout punch by Hillary Clinton so much as her ability to tell us all everything she had learned in preparation for donald trump. And she really needed to force him to make a huge mistake. That would be the headline this morning, and she did not. I thought sometimes when the camera was he was speaking and obviously had the sidebyside shot, she looked a little glib, almost like why am i on the stage with this man, a little beneath her. I have to say, certainly as a woman, i appreciated the restraint at the end. Im not sure i would have been able to exercise it myself, but restraint is a virtue, and its a president ial virtue, to tell Hillary Clinton after she accused him of being terrible with women to tell Hillary Clinton i was prepared to go rough tonight and im not going to do it because your husband and your daughter are here. That is going to grow in importance over the next couple days as a moment of great temperament and restraint. He played pretty rough in the primary, but we wont sit there and argue that. I just want to ask, because we keep talking about marcus of queens bury rules or our rules or whatever rules she won. Exactly what are the rules for winning the debate . The polls going up a week later . What are the official rules . Debates dont really matter. Maybe this one didnt matter because but what do you look for as sort of a convincing new voters. Well watch the polls. I know that i think hes going to get new voters. Inside his circle, there was the missed opportunity is what i heard from a lot of folks inside trump world last night. That there were some feelings that there were opportunities to pivot where he squarely is on offense and does it well all the time, on benghazi or email or will that be sort of t the to the degree that he tries to step it up at all, will it be getting himself on offense for more of the 90 minutes for the next two debates . Will that be sot of the adjustment . I was glad he pivoted to her emails because it was the only time it was raised the entire night. I think its a very important and kurbt issue to many americans. This week, she has staffers taking the fifth. Shes not fond of the Second Amendment, but boy, are they fond of the fifth amendment. They have immunity. This is an active ongoing investigation. So i was glad he pivoted to that. Donald trump is guilty of answering the question asked. And i thought Hillary Clinton last night wanted to make sure that no matter what was asked and what was answered, she was going to repeat back to us everything she had learned in the last week or two weeks. Thats fine, but hes just a different kind of candidate. If youre an outside, if youre a disrupter, a change agent and you get oxygen from the crowds, youre not going to stop going out day after day to bring your policy prescriptions, your ideas, your solutions right to the people. Hes getting ready to go to florida right now. Hell be in five or six would you suggest any readjustments or were you 100 fine with the performance . When youre in private, will you suggest he gets on offense more . He seemed to be digging out, as you said, a lot of the questions didnt favor him. Will you suggest any adjustments or will you keep the performance level where it was . I think hes great when he pivots. I saw a lot of pivoting in preparation for the debates. I would encourage him to do more pivoting and also remind him of what thensenator obama said in 2008 because i saw it on display last night. He said Hillary Clinton will say anything to win. I think last night proved that again. I agree with president obama. She will say anything to win. You said donald trump should get credit for the restraint he showed. We showed the clip where he said i was going to Say Something, but im not going to say it. What was he going to say . He could have said what was on millions of americans minds, are we going to relitigate who has been good to women and who hasnt. Theyre taking a couple comments he made over any number of years as a private citizen and versus where he could have gone. I think we can all finish the sentence. People did last night. They finished the sentence. They said you know, maybe he was going to talk about bill clintons record with women. Does donald trump hold Hillary Clinton responsible for bill clintons record with women. He didnt say that. What would be the point of the comment . I think you mean you his personal peccadilloes, to be clear. Does donald trump hold Hillary Clinton responsible he said i was prepared to be rough, speaking in preparation, i mean, we knew. I won a dollar bet on the fact that Hillary Clinton would mention that last night. Shes spending tens of millions of dollars in negative ads, negative mail in peoples boxes in florida and other swing states on this very issue. I think last night womim americs women should look at these candidates and say i have two choices. I can continue in the failed direction. I am either part of the 70 of americans who tell pollsters i want a new direction, i want change. Or i think the status quo pretty much works for me and my family. Most women today dont feel that way. Mark halpen. Are you saying the debate helped and you would take two more performances from him just the way he was last night, or that the debates arent as important as the press has made them out to be . Im not saying either one. Debates are important for voters to see them side by side and to really evaluate who they can see as commander in chief and who they can see as president of the United States. I dont think Hillary Clinton did a thing last night if somebody can correct me, what was the big takeaway moment where she offers this huge vision for Economic Growth and an end to wage stgination. If you feel comfortable that woman is equipped to go from calling isis determined enemies over to radical islamic terrorists or more importantly, savage murders, the birth and growth of which occurred on hers and president obamas watch. I didnt hear any big moment for her where she convinced the 70 of americans who want change, who want a different direction, that shes their gal. Kellyanne conway, thank you. Coming up on morning joe broad based, inclusive growth is what we need in america. Not more advantages for people at the very top. Mr. Trump typical politician. All talk, nee action. Sounds good, doesnt work. Never going to happen. Our country is suffering because people like secretary clinton have made such bad decisions. Donald trump pummeled trade policy last night. Michel Michelle Carusocabrera joins us with a lack at how the markets are reacting in the wake of last night ffs debate. Yep. Stirred it. Mmhmm. Drowned it again. Mmhmm. And now just feel if its cold. Yeah. Cool. [camera shutter clicks] [whistling a tune] smokey just gave me a bear hug. I know. I already posted it. Thiswell we thought geench programmed machines to talk. Ge is an Industrial Company that actually builds worldchanging machines. Machines that can talk to each other digitally. Hello . They dont talk to each other like that, ricky. Shhhh, youll anger it. He looks a little ticked off now. Welcome back to morning joe. Morning after the debate, lets bring in nbc news correspondent Hallie Jackson live from the site of last nights debate. Apparently, she slept in one of the freshman dorms. She just doesnt leaf the campus of hofstra university. You were in the spin room. Senior dorms, willie. Donald trump stepping into the spin room, something we havent seen from a general election candidate. Very different, but remember, we saw that from pretty much every primary debate several months ago. It was common. There was some expectation that he cant resist a spin room, and sure enough, he tried to do his thing, which is talk about how well hes doing in the polls. Talk about his quote unquote restraint. I think he talked about it earlier in the show, the idea, as he told me, he held off on bringing up bill clintons indiscretions, why . Because Chelsea Clinton was in the oaudience. He didnt rule out he wouldnt do it at the next debate. By the way, he committed to me to doing the next debate. I said, are you going to show up . He said, yeah, absolutely. One of the interesting moments. There were moments where he was interrupted Hillary Clinton often, rolling his eyes, seemed mad and frustrated at points. I asked him ability it. Listen tohuee h responded to me in the spin room and this morning on fox news. I was a little bit upset that the microphone in the room wasnt working properly. What do you mean . The microphone in the room wasnt working. I had a problem with a microphone that didnt work. I dont know if you saw that in the room, but my microphone was terrible. I wonder was it set up that way on purpose. My microphone, in the room, they couldnt hear me. It was going on and off, which isnt exactly great. I wonder if it was set up that way. It was terrible. When i tested it, it was beautiful. Like an hour before, i said what a great mike. It was much lower than hers. I dont want to believe in conspiracy theories, of course, but it was much lower than hers, and it was crackling. So he doesnt want to believe in conspiracy theories, guys. Yet hes sort of raising this question of this microphone issue. To give you a sense, in the debate hall, there were a couple issues, not very long, but from folks in the room, there might have been some audio questions. We didnt hear it in the spin room, watching it on the pool feed, our network air. I will tell you this, though. You heard trump talk about his attitude, his tone there. Hes the thing. Theres a lot of discussion about what this debate will mean for undecided voters. Let me tell you what it means to his base because i was texting with folks i have met on the campaign trail. People who maybe supported other candidates who now support donald trump. They almost to a tee did like what they see, even while acknowledging some missteps. For example, i had one person from florida say Trumps Energy is working for him. They thought he looked really passionate. I had another woman say yes, he missed some layups. She, a professional from North Carolina said, is evidence, but i had a guy from New Hampshire saying i wish he doubled up on the xanax, but he wants to see more of him. Hallie jackson, thank you. We have republican political consultant and columnist for time magazine, mike murphy, and political correspondent, kasie hunt. Always a microphone, like me, i would have been a doctor except i wasnt good in science. For donald trump, he would have won the debate except for the microphone. The weird thing is i heard everything he said. I didnt hear the snap, crackle, pop. Whats the frequency, donald . It was a rough night for him. We can overreact to this stuff. Yes, we can. Trump has one thing that works for him. The main spring of this election is fire all politicians. When he talks about that, hes selling tickets. For the first 25 minutes, he was. That line that was like, wow, he can use that for everything, was hey, you have been around for 35 years. If you had all these brilliant ideas, why didnt you do it before . He was doing fine, and i was stunned she dpid not have an answer for that because it was the most obvious thing and powerful thing trump had coming at him. Then when she pushed the button on inheriting from your dad and some of that stuff, he started breaking out of the training cage and it got bad. Why didnt she say, you know, i was there, and along with my husband in the 1990s, we fought hard, we balanced the budget, we passed welfare reform, we helped create 20 million new jobs, we cut taxes, all these things you say you wanted to do. We have already done it, donald. Thats what i have been hearing for 35 years. For the most prepared candidate in the world, she wasnt loaded for the biggest thing. I have no idea. But later on, trump is a onetrick pony. Thats his trick. In a 90minute debate, he starts running out of oxygen. By the end of it, he was he was on his own planet of non sequitur. He landed there and stayed there for half of the visit. I have to say, it was a lowenergy performance. Kasie, he didnt stick his tongue out. I heard that. Lowenergy performance. I heard that from a lot of people. One Republican Party chair from an important state emailed and said that was lowenergy donald. It started off as lowenergy donald. You are right, he didnt stick his tongue out. That happens, apparently. I think obviously, i think Hillary Clinton and the people around her feel like she had a strong night last night. I did. I think there are some signs they need to be careful to watch for, though, Going Forward. One, she has not proven herself to be a strong frontrunner. If they get too confident and put her in a position where theyre trying to protect something theyre awful at that. Thats risky for them. I also think some of the facial expressions she made as trump was talking to her risks alienating voters that she still needs to win over. Well, yes. And go ahead, willie. I was going to say, given they were in a split screen for the entirety of the 90 minutes, i thought she composed herself pretty well. Are did, too. Yeah. Another candidate might have rolled their eyes more. I thought she kept a straight face on some of the stuff that is hard to keep a straight face on. She handled her antics well. Can she keep a president ial demeanor while hes unscrewing his head. She did do that. Mark halperin, so it seems to me the further we get along in this morning, mika really is that last japanese soldier on an isolated South Pacific island in 1953 saying donald trump won the debate last night. Even donald trump seems to be suggesting that he lost because hes blaming his microphone now. If this were a normal debate with a normal sized audience, a lot of the coverage would dictate how people thought of the debate. In fact, if you look at the battleground state headlines in newspapers in some of the local coverage i have looked at, much of the headline coverage at least is, candidates clash. Most of the headlines or many dont reflect the notion of the National Media coverage, clinton winning the debate. This big audience, though, means and the clinton folks have been saying this since last night and into this morning, means if 100 Million People really saw all or part of the debate themselves, not through a filter, that may well benefit Hillary Clinton more than what would be the norm in terms of News Coverage. I want to clarify my position. Hillary clinton won the debate in a fair world of educated elites. Okay. And thats she did everything right, checked off all the boxes. Was perfect. Absolutely perfect. But i just feel like emotionally, his tone and even some of the things he said, really taps into where a lot of americans feel, not just his movement and not just his supporters, but a lot of people feel the way he sounded. Talking about our airports, talking about our economy. The first 20 or 30 minutes especially. Especially in the first 20 or 30 minutes. Mike murphy, lets look at it. We have been talking ability South Carolina. A perfect example of you can never judge trumps debate performances by their cover. After South Carolina, nicolle said she was on a jet blue flight and breaking out in hysterics. I sat there watching, my mouth agape, saying did he really just blame george w. Bush for 9 11 . And i think we all thought that was a disaster. Right. The next day, a cbs poll c e comes out, he wins by like 8,000 points. A good point. Were in manhattan where people kind of wish we would conduct these debates in french, the language of world diplomacy. Trump doesnt do any of that. Even owns a spork, not who knows. But heres the thing we have to remember. Whats wrong with sporks . Nothing at all. In the primary, that was kind of trump land. 30 million cranky old white guys like me. In a general election, 130 Million People, for trump to actually win and get out of the culdesac hes stuck in of demography, he has to convince College People to change their minds about him or minority voters to change their minds. If you look at last night, he had his brute force weapon of everything gotham city, everything is terrible and change, which resonates, but will it change the people he needs . I dont think so. I dont think he really lost any of his core vote, but thats the 43 hes been sitting on. I think, kasie, i think this is one of those inexplicable man woman job interviews where the man goes in, lets it all hang out. Hes a buffoon. Hes like completely overstating everything about himself, and Everything Else. We dont do that. Hes putting himself out there in every weay. A woman goes in with her books and shes got everything and shes really perfect, and nobody understands why he got the job. Hasnt that ever happened to you . Its happened to me. Women are going to choose the winner of the election. I think there are more men out there who are going to vote that we dont really understand. Women will decide, though, whether hillary wins or not. I think the one redeeming thing, i went into the debate talking to Hillary Clinton aides and they said all what matters the most is the first half hour. They said it over and over again. By that metric, that is where donald trump absolutely did the best. I think when we look at the polling Going Forward, you may actually see that reflected more than the back half. Yikes, mike murphy, kasie hunt, thank you both. Still ahead, last nights most popular tweets during the debate was one from donald trump years ago. Well explain why next. I do not say that. I think its important that we grip this and deal with it, both at home and abroad. If you look on twitter this morning, you will see a tweet from donald trump that states the concept of Global Warming was created by and for the chinese in order to make u. S. Manufacturing noncompetitive. Was that not true . Did he tell a lie last night . Look, what he said was and that, by the way, was a flippant and joking comment. I have to tell you, if you look on twitter, there are probably at least six occasions where he called Climate Change a hoax. This isnt a oneoff. What Donald Trumps position is, the hoax is some bureaucrats in washington, d. C. Can change the climate of the earth. You know what a hoax is, willie geist. That whole moon landing thing, neil armstrong, he was in burbank. Sound stage in burbank. The giveaway is carson peeks in and waves. That was governor mike pence earlier this morning on the today show, doing the despite the attack on donald trump last night, historically different positions on Climate Change, social media was quick to pick up on trumps 2012 tweet, which reads the concept of Global Warming was created by the chinese, and that tweet, according to twitter, was the most retweeted tweet of the entire debate. But he didnt mean it. Coming up next, heading into the debate, wall street was down, but by the time it was over, futures gained 100 points. Keep it right here on morning joe. Ched to sprint. If hes paid donald was one of the people who rooted for the housing crisis. He said back in 2006, gee, i hope it does collapse because then i can go in and buy some and make some money. Well, it did chance. Thats called business, by the way. Some of Donald Trumps moments from last night that would seem to defy conventional wisdom of what not to say anywhere or in a debate, lets bring in cnbc i disagree completely. I didnt pay taxes. Thats smart taxes. Im saying it defies logic, but i think it actually connects. I agree with you 100 . Why . I think they were funny. Those moments to a lot of people were quite funny and a lot of people who watched didnt disagree with a lot of what he said. I think the conventional wisdom is that she won and that is certainly wall streets conventional wisdom. But i would caution everybody here, you have been wrong from day one. Nobody i know thought that donald trump would ever get this far. Not us. We actually did. Not us, we were like the weirdos that everyone thought but anyhow. Im the only one at this table today. But today, mika stanldz alone. He had an effective performance. I think she, quote, won in intellectual circles or if you grade things like a teacher. She sounded like a teacher, do your fact checking. She did a great job. To your point, she was about as good as she ever was going to be. Always the same. And better than most people. And he was better than he normally is. If you watch him a lot, toward the end of the debate, he had his wandering trumpian moments. The time constraints worked to his favor. He couldnt do a fourminute wandering rift. He could only do a 30second wandering rift. The markets responded positively to to her. What they perceived to be a hillary win. But not by much. I would just add, theres a conflation issue here which is also the Deutsche Bank is once again in trouble this morning. Thats really pulled down thanchlgs, so when you look at the what the market is doing, you have to remember, theres stuff going on in the european banking sector. Our friend ed force, heres what i wrote even before 5 00 this morning. Im scared to say i dont think he lost anybody. She was good, but she was not great. He was bad but he was not as bad. Better than he normally is. Absolutely. And the first 30 minutes was incredibly effective. Absolutely.
