Hillary clinton meets with Foreign Policy and National Security experts in new york including former cia director David Petraeus and former Homeland Security secretary janet napolitano. She will have two surrogates on the campaign trail for her today, bill clinton in nepolitano. Thats a wrap for us on this friday. Im alex witt and morning joe starts right now. Libertarian president ial candidate gary johnson was on the msnbc and he had little trouble ask answering a basic question about syria. What would you do if you were elected about aleppo. About . Aleppo. And what is aleppo . Youre kidding. No. Aleppo is in syria and the center of the refugee crisis. Okay, got it, got it. Aleppo. I thought you said a leopard. I was like what do i do about a leopard . Praeb run away from it. Lets talk about this syrian town of alpo thats where they make the dog food. Next question, please. Good morning, it is friday. Whos glad its friday. September 9th. Welcome to morning joe. With us on set we have legendary columnist. Heres the problem. No, heres the problem. Yeah, you think hes really legendary. Have you seen his wife . Yes, matter of fact if anybody wants to understand why mike sits here and has the woman behind him no, hes the man behind the woman. Basically number two was named one of top 50 women ahead of beyonce. If you understand why mike twitches. I love this. Is that about right. Plus, she gives me an
allowance. How did you score that, by the way . Hes legendary, but shes above. Okay, veteran admin donnies here. Senior Political Editor and White House Correspondent bethany post samstein. Youre not willie geist. I look over there and all of a sudden a beard. I appreciate that. I was a little nervous about coming on. And in washington, Pulitzer Prize winning columnist and associate editor at Washington PostEugene Robinson. Gene has a great piece. Who is the guy with the beard sitting next to hes so cute. A hipster from waynesburg. A couple days of growth. Its not that bad. Just two days. You have one of those incomplete beards. Thats not nice. Thats really not mice. Actually, really not nice. Perfect. Thank you, i appreciate that. We have a lot to get to. I think were hearing now, i think were hearing some strength from Republican Leaders who finally realize we can finally come to termsswith the fact that we can be strong and speak out strongly against the republican nominee given all the incredibly Dangerous Things he said. Donald trumps renews praise came under criticism yesterday as Hillary Clinton laid down a challenge for republicans to rebuke or stand with its comments. If he says great things about me, ill say great things about him. He is very much of a leader. Isnt that a terrible thing, the man has very strong control over our country. Now, a very different system and i dont happen to like the system, but certainly in that system, he has been a leader. Far more than our president has been a leader. What would Ronald Reagan say
about a republican nominee who attacks americas generals and keep praise on russias president. Every Republican Holding or seeking office in this country should be asked if they agree with donald trump. Okay. So, what you first saw was donald trump. One of his many disturbing comments that show up lack of knowledge and lack of depth on anything, including the important, complicated relationship or lack there of with russia. So, finally then clinton challenging republicans to do what they need to do. What somebody needs to do is speak up to what is wrong. Paul ryan finally found his way to a microphone and im thinking. I havent seen this yet, but im thinking he directly addressed donald trump finally. Take a look. I read the little snippet. Let me say this about vladimir
putin. He is an aggressor that doesnt share our interests. Celebrating the sovereignty of neighboring countries. Certainly appears he is conducting in statesponsored cyberattacks on what appears to be our political system. That is not acting in oour interests. And that is anned aversarial stance. Are you concerned, though, of donald trump praising Vladimir Putin . I made my points about putin clear. Im not going to sit up here and do the fit for tat what donald did. That is not my job. I am not going to be are you still voting for him to be commander in chief . Ill leave it at that. Can you imagine if Hillary Clinton was praising Vladimir Putin, they would literally run her out of the couple. Interesting listening to trump
with putin. That is the kind of leader he wants to be. I think he wants to be a dictator. I think there is an envy there. Nicolle, you put your hands to your face. What a disappointment. I reached out to republicans yesterday and from the, you know, from what is left of the establishment and they just said this is just so stunning. I called one former adviser mitt romney and said im having a wake. I said, what happened . He said, no, for the go op. I reached out to three people in the trump camp and i said, what is the deal . I think hes strong, not good. I dont believe you. I believe thats what you think he should think but i dont believe thats what he thinks. He doesnt believe hes strong but bad. Hes strong full stop. One thing about donald trump, he shows his hand. And this is a man who looks at that and goes that is what a
leader is. By the way, he is in control. He controls the media and hes a dictator. It is stunning. We need to step back here because part of this is not just trump. Part of this is about obama. A lot of this putin praise started in 2014. You can go back and find quotes from Rudy Giuliani at this tame. This is before trump jumped in saying Vladimir Putin is what a leader should be. Hes authoritative and taking very direct stand on the geopolitical stage and he is running around obama. Those are quotes from Rudy Giuliani at the time. I think a lot of this because people on the republican side dont like obama. They think that best on the international stage. Now, of course, some of the ties mike pence yesterday. Mike pence. Do you have that sound bite . I found that to be stunning. This is trumps running mate. Thank you, mike. Lets show that right now. I think its inarguable that Vladimir Putin has been a
stronger leader in his country than barack obama has been in this country. And thats going to change the day that donald trump becomes president of the United States of america. Like to know what trump thinks about adolf hitler. Gene writes in Washington Post hes a dictator. Donald trumps raging ego mania and donald trump mentioned in the commander in chief forum that putin called him brilliant. What he meant is you a bright, shiny object. That is different. He didnt say that. He didnt. Anyhow, gene, you write this. The most revealing moment in the president i president ial candidatess first joint forum came when donald trump told the world he admires Vladimir Putin. Never mind he invaded ukraine and seized crimia. Never mind that he supports the
butcher Bashar Al Assad in syria. Never mind that so many of his political opponents end up murdered or imprisoned. Putin, you see, once paid trump a compliment. Its not about immigration or foreign pall or or making America Great, again. Whatever that means. Its entirely about trump and his raging egomania. I think eugene nailed everything right there. I really mean it, everything. Gene, you go ahead. It is, no, its all about trump. And, i mean, you dont even have to step back to look at this right. Vladimir putin. Mike pence says hes a strong leader. Shame on mike pence, who i thought was an honorable person and a dedicated conservative and i cannot believe he said what he said yesterday. I mean, yes, hes a strong
leader in this country. He controls the media. He kills journalists. He kills political opponents. Yeah, so, sure, he controls his country in a way that maybe donald trump wants to control the United States. For some reason, all these insipid, dangerous blurts are accepted. I dont know if everyone because they heard this white noise from donald trump for so many months that we just take it for a grain of salt. Mike barnicle i agree with you and i heard pence saying what he said. Something inside me died even more. I mean, do you agree . I mean, you know, supposedly he was the more reasonable of the two of them on that ticket. Nicolles point is great. Senior strategist made the point that if barack obama had said any of this stuff in 2008, every single republican would have called to renounce his comments, but literally leave the president ial race and maybe
resign from the senate. Its remarkable how you can change your tone when your candidate you guys, i saw senator corker here this week and i thought he was more forthcoming as of late. They cornered him yesterday and went even further and john mccain was literally, you know, running from the cameras. But in the elevator before hitting door close, that putin is a thug and a criminal and a killer. The moderate Republican Party to the degree that it has stood for anything over the last 20 years has stood for everything that putin is against. Theyre standing for weakness now. They cant say what they need to say. I agree with you. If you take the week in its entirety, i thought clinton had a great day yesterday. She got herself on offense on this point about putin. I think she sort of alwaysed a vnss her cause when the republicans split apart and this point for putin, phrase the
party almost to the degree that the muslim man did. In terms of what she accomplished yesterday. Just calling about the generals. I feel like people didnt even have a beat to dig in. Which generals . Who is he talking about . They have no answer. And i think to the degree that nothing has changed in a long time in this race. To the degree that suddenly could change, if republicans forced answers on some of these claims. Ask you a question, when trump praises putin and talks, do you think donald trump understands the true role and limitations of the executive order of the president of the United States . No clue. He certainly doesnt understand the commander in chief role. He doesnt understand that the commander in chief has control of the american military. He doesnt understand that. He doesnt understand the way the system works. Theres so much that he doesnt understand that he doesnt even understand that. Thats the challenge for Hillary Clinton, as we move on here. Because this is a woman who is,
you know, whether you agree or not with her policies incredibly prepared for the office of the presidency and has prepared for this campaign and has a website and policy papers that are just, people argue she has to sort of try because theres so much information because shes so prepared. What shes trying to do and what you see her struggling with is having to dumb herself down to deal with this idiot on the other side. And its even harder because its like how do you even what floating, shiny object do you attack that comes out of his mouth. And instead of talking how do you debate someone like this . Matt lauer found it. And i just want to Say Something about people who think they know how to moderate commander in chief forums and have all these
things to say about what happened the other night. In a short amount of time to try to catch all the ridiculous things that came out of Donald Trumps mouth and follow up, youd end up having three hours. Bob woodward came on our show in washington and was very critical of me and joe. You need to ask him the tough questions. The montage of our town hall compared to a competing networks town hall and how many tough questions we asked him and how many follow ups we asked him. He doesn answer. It seems to be okay with the American People. We told bob, he doesnt answer. Well show you. Donald trump will be on next hour, you take it away. And bob sat there completely at a loss trying to get this guy to answer anything with anything truthful as he just threw crap against the wall. Just out of his mouth, out of no where. And the follow up for even bob woodward. Think about that. Think about that for a second
was difficult. He was just absolutely. After the interview he looked at us and just put his hand in the air like, okay, i get it. Its actually, its how the American Public is ingesting this information because donald trump has the ability to make it sound credible because he can use facial expressions or use his talent of being on tv to make stupidity sound credible. We have to be smarter as viewers. You just hit it. Theyve accepted him. They have accepted him. He asks the question. People beat us up for grading him on a curve. He goes to mexico and takes a stage. Thats not our judgment. Thats what the public sees. And this connect on a gut level. Thats his thing. And, plus, this is a cosmetic medium television. You sit there and youre a guest in their homes and theyre watching this thing on the tv
screens. The way you get criticized is to literally about every 45 second you would have to look at him on a tv set thats in peoples homes and say, donald, thats a lie. Thats a lie. Or what you said, i mean, do you think donald trump knows about aleppo . All i thought about with gary johnson, donald trump, meet mike barnicle. I will take the under. There is no chance he knows what aleppo is. This will be an i. Q. Test for the American Public. Or a gut test. Like mika said, theyve accepted him. Just take it all and then you have people going, you need to ask the questions. I think the frustration that people have, i think the frustration people have is that in that forum, for instance, five or six instances where he said something that in any other instance where any other candidate would have been considered a crippling statement. Wait, frame that. Tell us again what happened. Explain to our viewers. If they missed it. An old tweet that he had put up and i forget the year he put it. 2013. It essentially said that what do people expect when they integrated the armed forces. Men and women. Women get raped because men and women are together. Matt lauer read that back to him and he said that is a correct tweet. That is a rejectively thing to say. Then he started talking glowingly about a mexican official having left the government. He is glowing about how he got mexican official fired, essentially. Of course, he reversed himself yesterday tweeting it was a shame this guy left. Y these things in their own right would have been problematic for another candidate and for trump because it happens so rapidly and all the time, we move beyond it. The other frustration that people have and you can call it legitimate or not, these things happen. On the other side, legitimate questions, but people obsess over email protocol and thats legitimate. Totally legitimate. When you step back and say were having a debate over email protocol and on the other hand youre seeing someone literally cozy up to Vladimir Putin and say he wants to fire all the generals. How do you weigh these two things against each other . What he did about the intelligence briefing to somehow suggest and twist. That was reprehensible. The scary thing is i was watching that thing. Trying to lens it through an entire country watching it and what people respond to. He was like this. That is what people are. They dont even hear this. Hes banging on the table. Thats what people respond ta. The issue dealing with him and interrogating him and however you want to call it, you
are literally sitting opposite a tsunami of lies. Just for the record, matt lauer exposed everything the other night, including what to you expect when men and women get together. Well, women are going to be sexually assaulting. Donald trump was saying that was a good statement. Just think about this pause it was put out there for the American Public to see and, poor Hillary Clinton, trying to figure out how to deal with this. Like how to dumb herself down and respond to these things. This is a nightmare. She did a good job, though, yesterday. She adapted. This is a nightmare this is the candidate. Im sorry for anybody Still Standing on the side of donald trump you are going talose in the long run and i dont really understand how you can live with yourself and how you can see that this isnt a very big mitam mimistake. I dont understand it. If he is a democratic candidate, and he is a democrat, i mean, it
would just be a simple decision. Im confused. I really am. I have lost faith in washington. Anybody see giuliani last night . Well get tato giuliani. The fallout right here on our set and Mike Barnicles legendary. Sorry, mika. The always outspoken dallas maveric mavericks owner mark cuban joins us. Lets say he and donald trump had an interesting history on social media. Later, new York City Police commissioner bill bratton joins us this as this weekend we mark the 15th anniversary of september 11th. Well talk to him about the city, safety and much more. In the aftermath of july Party ConventionsHillary Clinton had opened up a sizable lead in certain key swing states. But now many of those wide
margins are beginning to erode. Lets start with a new quinnipiac poll donald trump dead even. 4747. Clinton and trump are completely flipflop when it comes to support of men and women voters there. In pennsylvania, a state where clinton has looked dominant, she is sufferring from a fivepoint swing in trumps favor and still leads 4843. In ohio the numbers swing in trumps favor. When you add Third Party Candidates to the mix, oh, boy. Trumps lead grows to four and look at third place libertarian gary johnson surging six points to 14 . One North Carolina poll Suffolk University poll shows trump in the lead by three but the quinnipiac poll in the tarheel state shows Clinton Holding on. All of those polls were taken, of course, before yesterday
morning. Right. Thats when gary johnson had his now infamous moment right here on morning joe. What would you do if you were elected about aleppo. About . Aleppo. And what is aleppo . Youre kidding. No. Aleppo is in syria. It is the epicenter of the refugee crisis. Okay. Got it, got it. Did you have a brain freeze moment or was it that the phrase aleppo threw you . No excuse. I was thinking in terms of acronym aleppo. Thats no excuse whatsoever. But the dynamics in play in syria are is that youve got the assad regime up against the Free Syrian Army, which we support, that are aligned with the islamics, isis. And you cant make this stuff up. Johns released a statement after that appearance on the view. He began his day by setting aside any doubt that im human. I blanked. It happened and it will happen again during the course of this campaign. Can i name every city in syria . Should i have identified aleppo . Yes. As governor there were a lot of things i didnt know off the top of my my head, but i succeeded by surrounding myself with the right people, getting to the bottom of important issues and making principled decisions. It worked. That is what a president must do. In part you write this, mike barnicle. Maybe you saw it. Maybe it caught your eye and caused you to stop for a minute. The picture displayed the stunned, bloody body of a 5yearold seated in the face of
the black of an ambulance. Still alive. A survivor of an aerial Bombing Campaign in his neighborhood on a street where war never end in a city called aleppo, in a fractured country called syria. Much of the world wept for Omran Dagneesh but the tears and the heartfelt sorry soon disappeared. Just the way the commitment of so many public do remember the veterans and their families diminishes and then disappears once the election is over. Just the way they forget their duty to do their jobs. Ask it and keep asking it. Its hard in this campaign, mike, id love you to in
continue with your thoughts there to get to the serious issues with some of the topics that seem to take center stage. Look, governor johnson is certainly not alone in his, you know, momentarily inability to talk about aleppo. None of the candidates, really, have talked about. We havent heard about syria a lot. We havent heard about the middle east a lot from any of them. Have you . The great irony of this is that social searches for alepp, owent off the charts yesterday and took a brain fart from a president ial candidate. So, yeah, youre right. We dont really talk about it unless its thrust into our political conversation. But theres a story in the news every day whether you read a paper or go online. Our secretary of state and president or whatever party youre in. John kerry works on this, what, seven days a week. This is not just about our
broken politics or the broken way we cover them. This is about our complete detachment from what our government does. This is what our leaders do every day. And forget, i have been a harsh critic of the inability or refusal to enforce the red line in syria. Everything that happened afterward is everyones business. Where do people think thh muslim ban came from. It came from a refugee crisis and came from the fact that 5 year olds are getting killed in syria. How people dont know aleppo stunned me. There are millions of people, literally, in aleppo. Many of them without water, without food, without medicine. And, gene, i dont know, have you heard any of the two other candidates, the major candidates. Hillary clinton or, you know, donald trump talk about aleppo or did he ask about the cauldron
that is the middle east, really. No. And, first of all, that was a great question you asked yesterday. Very simple question. And a president ial candidate running for president of the United States who doesnt have an Immediate Reaction when you say aleppo. I just think, forget that guy. Basically as far as im concerned. That should be at a minimum, you should know what the place is. But, no, havent heard from Hillary Clinton or donald trump, any serious discussion of aleppo and certainly no ideas on how to address the crisis in aleppo and in syria at large because its hard. And its much easier. In the same category. We know that hillary knows where it is. Exactly. I think that her camp makes that we grade him on a curve is absolutely the difference. We know she knows exactly whats going on in aleppo. They better be granular and all kidding aside, this is a moment in time and going to start with the first debate in 90 minutes and they need to be granular. It needs to get to this and there need to be seven or eight other aleppo questions, if you will. Not necessarily what is the capital, but things that basically price of entry our commander in chief. The public doesnt understand why this matters. This is Donald Trumps opportunity. Why does it matter what happens in aleppo . That has been lost by democrats and republicans. Why does it matter to us what happens there because we do not live in a walled off city. Mike barnicle the piece is in daily beast and everyone should read it and tweet it and spread it around and help the understanding of what happened today. Its a great piece. But, his wife still is above beyond. Im done tweeting. I never get a retweet. Still ahead, remember north
korea . Did it seem like they have take on the back seat in our Foreign Policy discussions . Now they claim they have tested their fifth Nuclear Weapon. North korea claims they have conducted another nuclear test. The countrys state media says it is the fifth and largest detonation so far. Saying it was meant to counter what it calls u. S. Hostility. The test comes in the wake of president obamas trip to asia and on the 68th anniversary of north koreas creation. Detected a seismic event resembling an earthquake in the northeast part of their communist neighbor. The test was met with condemination with china. The president spoke with south koreas president last night. Joining us now on set president on the council of foreign relations, Richard Haass. The question of the morning is, as i guess you say, what is pyongyang. Ten Nuclear Weapons. This is the most closed, nuclearized society on the earth. What theyre trying to do is two things. Shrink Nuclear War Heads and try to exchange the range of their Ballistic Missiles. I dont know if its two years or four years or five years. By the end of the first term of the person were electing this november, theyll have the ability to put Nuclear Warheads on missiles to reach the west coast of the United States. For the last two decades we have been putting sanctions on north korea and republican and democratic administrations alike. What last nights test did and it is an issue that didnt come up at the forum. Are we prepared to tolerate a north korea that could hold the United States hostage. What is our choice . The choice is to militarize the relationship. Top going to the u. N. And to go to tokyo and china and already were starting to put Ballistic Missile defense in the region. But are we prepared to push for regime change in north korea . Are we prepared to tell china . Nothing has worked. Here we are at number five. The number one test whether china is prepared to step up and be a serious country or prepared to say to north korea under certain conditions we would reach military force. In five years well have to wake up every day like we did during the cold war where we had soviet missiles that could reach us. We have to decide whether this is tolerable. You didnt mention talking to north korea. And also barack obama in 2008, just to make clear, he did open
himself up to the possibility of talking to these people. I think there is zero chance that would achieve anything. Its only card it could play is its nuclear one. Their leader said they have seen Nuclear Weapons as part of their deterrent. They are a Nuclear Weapon state. They arent interested in giving it up. I think they could come where rather they could have ten Nuclear Weapons 10 or 20 or 30. We are hitting ourselves if we think we can talk them out of the only playing card they have. Now the dean of the Fletcher School of law and diplomacy at Tufts University retired fourstar navy general and we should mention until recently, admiral has been an nbc news and msnbc analyst but this week he has been asked to advise the Clinton Campaign on National Security matters. His role with us has been temporarily put on hold while he is advising the campaign. Admiral, part of a meeting today that Hillary Clinton is assembling with a group of top National FormerSecurity Officials and what do you expect to discuss with the candidate and will north korea be on the table . The idea of the meeting, from what i understand, was to talk about terrorism globally with the focus on the islamic state. Hard to imagine that north korea wont come up. Let me just what richard said and i think he said it urfectly. The additional worry to what richard articulated is that they are growing the capability to launch these from submarines. So, theyve already done that a couple of times. Not nuclear ones, but ballistic ones. Over time that gives them the ability to approach the coasts of the United States. That may be coming a lot quicker than we think. So, the idea is in addition to the eventual move towards militarization, we had to really be exploring the cybersphere
here. Things we can do that are short of overinvasion. I agree with richard, this is in my view, the most dangerous country in the world very shortly, if not already. What is the size of their submarine fleet . Richard, its very small right now. Its diesels only. So, limited range. I think the worry would be before you could send a esel all the way across the pacific, the approach on the coasts of our allies. But over time, those diesel Battery Technologies are improving and i would not at all rule that out in the coming years. At the moment, not a significant, longrange diesel capability, but its coming. This is nicolle wallace. Can i ask you in your new role as a clinton adviser, when donald trump makes these claims and plenty of evidence that voters respond tathem, he polls ahead in the question about fighter terrorism and close enough on foreign policies i presume to worry you guys. When he talks about how america
is so weak right now. Can you understand how voters might put this north korea example in that category of where influence has waned and how would you defend your candidate on that question . Well, first of all, i think that it is crucial that we take a global, strategic view of these challenges. And i think that on the idea that were going to gain traction by building walls and cutting ourselves off not only with mexico but trying to get out of nato and allowing Nuclear Weapons overseas, i think that adds hugely dangerous amounts of tension over the mix. The way to solve these kind of problems, nicolle international cooperation. And its getting the private sector working with the public sector. I think those are the things that secretary clinton is going to be talking about today at this meeting with the group she assembled. Picking up on something the admiral said and there is one diplomatic path and that is called beijing. Now we move to what is called
beijing. The issue is twothirds of north koreas trade twothirds to three quarters. China has tolerated north korea. They dont like them, but they tolerate this. Whether china will see this as so dangerous the idea of the United States working with south korea and japan could one day use force and maybe end that countrys separate existence. Whether china will finally step up and start making sure their Border Guards so nothing moves in and out. They can do that. They can put enormous pressure on north korea. They have chosen not to. The old line about germany back during the cold war. We like germany so much we are glad there are two of them. We like korea so much, but we want two of them. Maybe now see the danger of a separate north korea. The separate dimension is what leverage can we put on china so they can, in fact, put more pressure on north korea. Do we have a role to play
maybe positive. What if we basically have a positive conversation with china where we would say, what would be the conditions under which a combined korea would live . Are there ways to tell china that a combined ckorea that seol as its capital, that is a potential interesting conversation to have. Admiral, before you join in on what richard was just saying. Could you, for us, for people viewing, could you address the malevolent role that Donald Trumps hero Vladimir Putin has in the globe and in the global structure today for us . I can. And id really start with the invasion of ukraine and the annexation of crimia. That really rattles old ghosts in europe, mike. And its created this kind of
pervasive, difficulty challenge of kind of stumbling back towards a cold war. Secondly, his support for Bashar Al Assad in syria is extremely problematic. This is genocidal dictator who violates human rights on an hourly basis. And then, thirdly, you have to look at the way that Vladimir Putin is using the cybersphere, not only here in the United States, but throughout much of the western world to undermines behavior there. Very dangerous. Speaking of russia to pick up on richards extremely apt point i think the conversation has to be with china about a unified korea, in the same way that we had conversations about a unified germany with russia. Russia much weaker position at the end of the cold war, of course, but real merit in richards ideas. Secondly, only to add on the sanctions point, we ought to think about how to personalize the sanctions to go after the

Yesterday, the popular photo blog humans of new york posted this photo of clinton. With it came a story about clinton taking a Law School Admission test at harvard. She and her friend were the only women in the room and men avoiding the draft confronted them. If you take my spot ill get drafted and go to vietnam and die. Clinton told the blog i know that i can be perceived as aloof
or cold or unemotional. But i had to learn as a young woman to control my emotions. And thats a hard path to walk. Because you need to protect yourself, you need to keep steady but at the same time you dont want to seem walled off. And sometimes i think i come across more in the walled off arena. When the camera gets pointed in her direction, completely different. Something changes. I think that she struggled, ironically, for a politician, but she struggled with how to have the public persona that matches what everyone sees in a private setting. And thats very rare for a politician to have that. I find it interesting that that quote, that ective. Im curious if t other candidate would ever have something in the same universe of any reflection or possibly i made a mistake or im only human. He answered that. Just wanted to say what it was. Doesnt apologize. Gene, what do you think . I think theres another problem or issue that Hillary Clinton faces, which is the way a woman in politics is scrutinized and a way that men are not. So, you know, her tone of voice, whether or not she smiles sweetly and demurely at every occasion. You know, that i think gets in the way of people just appreciating the person. Very quickly here. She got criticized for not smiling after that forum. We went and counted them up. She smiled almost twice as much as donald trump. Ryyan said that . This is what gene is talking about this. The superficial criticism that women in politics do face. Coming up at the top of the hour, a lot of president ial candidates, we were talking about reagan yesterday. so, totally sold out. Welcome back to morning joe. Its friday, september 9th. Still with us legendary columnist. Legendary. Renowned ad man donny deutsch. White house correspondent frrm Huffington Post sam stein. No, not any more. Thats why i grew this thing. Creepy beard. Very creepy. 12 year olds are not supposed to have Pulitzer Prize winning columnist and editor of Washington PostEugene Robinson and joining the conversation Political Writer for New York Times nicholas o and moderator of meet the press chuck todd. All right, todd, helpmy out here. Im going to try to get through this. First of all, well start with the renewed praise that donald
trump has for russian president Vladimir Putin. It came under criticism as Hillary Clinton laid down a challenge it to rebuke or stand with his comments. If he says great things about me, ill say great things about him. You can say, oh, isnt that a terrible thing. The man has very strong control over our country. Now a very different system and i dont happen to like the system but certainly in that system he has been a leader. Far more than our president has been a leader. What would Ronald Reagan say about a republican nominee who attacks americas generals and keeps praise on russias president. Every Republican Holding or seeking office in this country should be asked if they agree with donald trump. So, in washington, House Speaker paul ryan was asked to way in. I read the little snippet. Let me say this about Vladimir Putin. Vladimir putin is an aggressor
who does not share our interests. Vladimir putin is violating the sovereignty of neighboring countries. It certainly appears that he is conducting in statesponsored attacks and what appears to be our political system. That is not acting in our interests and that is anned aversarial stance and he is acting as an adversary. Donald trump praising Vladimir Putin. I made my points about putin clear right there. Ill leave it at that. Im not going to sit up here and say what he said in hillary versus donald. Im not going to be the Election Year pundit. Are you still comfortable voting for him on him being commander in chief . He cant be, can he . Absolutely not. He is concerned. Why cant he say that . Trumps running mate stood by the nominee, as did others, including Rudy Giuliani who accidentally referred to trump as Ronald Reagan. Ronald reagan is going to go into negotiations with putin from a position of strength. Hillary clinton and barack obama gave up the game on day one when they reset the relationship with russia and they gave up the Nuclear Defense of poland and the czech republic. Putin took a look at them and said, i could push these guys around the world. These are children compared to me. Donald trump is not a child. So i thought, what about the reagan era. What where think gorbachev was a better leader for russia than, i would say no. But if i have to wonder if putin is a better leader for russians today than obama is for americans. Then i think it is more likely a yes answer to that question. Thun with thing i know about Vladimir Putin hes doing whats right for russia. No question about that. When i lis on tten to the Obama Administration im not sure if
theyre doing whats right for this country or whats right for our enemies. There are times i dont even know. I think its inarguable that Vladimir Putin has been a stronger leader in his country than barack obama has been in this country. And thats going to change the day that donald trump becomes president of the United States of america. Do these morons know that he murders his opponents and he controls the media. That he is a dictator. Do these morons understand that . Its not funny any more. Its not funny any more. This is a dictator. This is a dictator, oppressive, evil man. Which is what makes that a little more concerning because, why . Ill say it now, the people that spoke fantastically put together piece are morons. Absolute blithering idiots. Thats a very strong statement. Does anybody here at the statement disagree . No. Look, i think every day donald trump kind of wakes up in the morning and says, what can i
say today to make it aawkwar as possible for other people in my party to support me . He is like, for putin being the best leader on earth and it makes your head spin. Its brutal for these guys who have endorsed him. Chuck, internally, within the Republican Party, what is the there are moderate republicans. What is going on . Well, theres not a single serious republican who thinks this is, this is appropriate. Im just. I cannot believe, i hope you read the ann applbaum piece on how russia does try to mess around and get involved in the politics of other countries. And its a scary proposition how it works. Its propaganda filled and theres a lot of aspects here and it was sort of a premonition of what you could expect next, if the russians have success here. But im just, its just, by the way, you didnt even mention that somehow donald trump accidentally ended up on putins Propaganda Network. Were getting there. I dont know whats worse to say you didnt know that you would end up on putins Propaganda Network or that you chose to do it. I mean, either way, if you accidentally found yourself being used as a piece of propaganda by Vladimir Putin, is that worse judgment than making the decision to have done it knowingly . So, im going to show that now. But we had paulryan, representative king. Are these serious republicans . Im just asking chuck. Theres a difference. Paul ryan is going as far as he feels comfortable politically going and not supporting him. But look what steve king. I mean, steve king went all the way. I just, what are we saying here . This is a guy that murders journalists. This is a guy, the big 82 approval rating. Well the minute it doesnt have that he, i think, dispatched, didnt kill the pollster, but i think kicked him out of the country. This is i mean, to praise this type of leader. This is not a leadership. Hes threatening his own people when he does this. Im just sort of if you think about four years ago, mitt romney and he did get a lot of criticism for this but it looks right at the time he was talking about russia as the geopolitical foe for the United States. Heavy, heavy in russian Foreign Policy. To go from that to this is some sort of remarkable type of policy transformation i dont think weve ever seen. I dont think we had a chance to talk to him about syria and
north korea. Its a joke. Well, korea to get in line behind it. Chuck, as you mentioned, last night donald trump did an interview on the news channel sponsored by the russian government. Trump spoke with his friend and host larry king about what u. S. Experts believe was the russianled hacking of trumps opponent. Putin recently said that the hacking of the Democratic National committees emails was a public service. Do you agree . I dont have any opinion on it. I dont know anything about it. I dont know who hacked. Im not sure who. You tell me who hacked. U. S. Intelligence and Law Enforcement agencies reportedly are investigating whether russia launched a covert operation to disrupt the 2016 election. What do you make of that . I dont know. I mean, ive been hearing about it and ive been reading about it. I think its probably unlikely. I think maybe, maybe the democrats are putting that out. Who knows. But i think that its pretty unlikely. But, you know, who knows. I hope that if they are doing something, i hope that somebody will be able to find out so they can end it because that would not be appropriate at all. After questions began to swirl over trump doing russian sponsored tv, the Trump Campaign issued a statement. Trump recorded a short interview with larry king for his pod cast as a favor to mr. King. What larry concussion does with the interview is up to him. We have nuthing to do with it. Lets first get into what donald trump just said. The u. S. Intelligence Committee Says it has high confidence that russia is behind that hacking of the dnc. Now, high confidence. That phrase, you know, that category of information, we kill people. We assassinate the terrorists on
the basis of high confidence intelligence. That means that they did it. And we know they did it. Now, donald trump may or may not understand it. But i think its time to ask, you know, beyond the donald trump egomania that i wrote about and he says great things about me and i say great things about him. Time to ask, what is the deal with donald trump and russia. You know, with the change of the rnc platform and faaor the pro russia side and ukraine. Trumps bromanse with putin that seems to be enduring. Its one of the few enduring policy positions that he has taken. So, what is the deal with him and russia . Its true. We all thought it was related to paul manafort. Could well be within these tax returns of his that we dont see. And probably wont see. Thats a good point. But i have a question id like to pose to everyone. Id like to start with chuck with the question. It may be unanswerable, but it is this. What is going on with our politics . With our culture in this country when the former head of the kgb, Vladimir Putin is regarded as a hero by the nominee of the Republican Party for president of the United States at the same time when someone like poor gary johnson gets toasted and roasted, you know, for a comment. It was an unfair question you asked him. Ually get a free pass. I dont get it. I think, you know, again, this seems to be i guess its sort of political insanity. Ideological insanity. I dont know what you want to call it. It is so are we so in a polarized environment that there are people that so hate that they say to themselves at the end of the day, i cannot break
with party. I cannot do this. This is, this is National Security. This is this is sort of the basic premise of american exceptionalism. The idea, frankly, that we would sit here and think it is okay. It is okay to praise a leader who doesnt believe in basic freedoms that were the founding principles of this con, starting with freedom of the press. Were trying to by the way, one more thing, mika. Donald trump went on russian propaganda television to trash the American Press corps. Yeah, great. Just absolutely, like in through the out door stuff. Wae have the tweet about men and women and sexual assault. We have a long list and im youre right, chuck. Its insanity. This is insanity. The Republican Party. The obvious reason why this is acceptable to many
republicans that trump is in is pure tribalism. When the head of your party, the president ial nominee says something, you associate more with your partys nominee than you do with the ideology or the ideas. Thats why you have people like sean hannity who can three years ago say he deserves to be thrown in jail and all those horrible things and then have him on the show and say, you know, i hope you get your freedom because he is now working on behalf of undermining Hillary Clinton. Its just pure tribalism. I have to do this story now which is really just sad. Donald trump essentially began politics by questioning the birthplace of president obama. But in an interview on hardball last night with chris matthews. He is the top surrogate. Is there a more okay, this is trumps top surrogate, rudy
giuliani. He said trump no longer believes president obama was born outside of the United States. Mike pence, the governor of indiana and, of course, dr. Ben carson. Both come out in the last days, hours, practically, and said they believe president obama is a legitimately elected president of the United States. He was born in the United States. Do you agree with that and confirm that . I confirm that and now donald trump now confirms that. When did he do that . When did he do that . Two years ago. Donald trump believes now that he was born in the United States. But that issue was raised originally when is he going to say that this president is legitimate . This is a fundamental question, mr. Mayor. Do you believe it . If you believe it, why doesnt your candidate state it . I believe it. He believes it. But it took a long time to get it out. Chris did a great job. The first 20 minutes of that
interview wasically in him saying Hillary Clinton is unhelpful. Rudy giuliani in my mind is unhinged. My mom lives in boca west and there are some vacancies there and i think Rudy Giuliani should go down there. Because hes not well. If you watch that interview and chris did a great job. You can see that that man is just not well. I dont believe donald trump needs to say it. I dont take rudys words. Until donald trump says it. Somebody should put a microphone in donald trump. He wont talk about it. He needs to be asked directly if Rudy Giuliani is right. He has been asked a million times. Four times in the past week and a half. Giulianis comments came one day after mike pence told reporters aboard his Campaign Plane that he believes president obama was born in the u. S. Trump himself has only said that he doesnt talk about it any
more, but last night Hillary Clinton refused to let trump off the hook so easily. We are facing a candidate with a long history of Racial Discrimination in his business. Who traffics intoxic conspiracy theories like the lie that president obama is not a true american. If he doesnt even respect all americans, how can he serve all americans . Anybody want to add to that . I absolutely agree with donny and sam and nick that donald trump has to say it. He has to go on camera and say it. And the other thing that has to happen is youre correct. We have to make up a little card to pin to rudys sleeve saying, my name is rudy. I live in condo 3a in boca west. Chuck todd, in all seriousness i cant. Wae he had the primary and dd
trump definitely has a connection with what is ailing america and sort of filled in this space that washington left wide open and we all talked about that. As members of the press corps, the media, analysts, our job is also to state facts. At this point, i will, ill go on the record and say there are so many lies that this candidate just throws out there right and left. Just at his whim. Seemingly for fun. To make it part of a riff and i do think at this point he has failed. He has failed any test in terms of being able to cover him as a legitimate, credible candidate. No, its to put it in football terms, which you may find a little annoying, my apologies there. Its football season. Sort of the spread offense of misconceptions, misperceptions and lies and all this stuff. Theres so many of them. You cover one, and theres six left uncovered. You know, it is, you cant debunk the lies as fast as hes telling them sometimes. It is sort of one of these things. You chase one or two and you go down that rabbit hole. Four, five left unchecked over here or unpushed back over here or some are pushing back here. It becomes, its actually a Brilliant Media strategy if youre trump in some ways because youve thrown up. Its like, its like with fighter pilots. Just throwing up trying to make sure that the fire power moves else wrp. Do you believe that trump followers think hes lying and dont care or actually dont think hes lying . I think its a look. I think this is what i always say. We have to separate trump from the folks that support trump. I had somebody email this to me and i know its a brilliant way of putting it. Between the working class and the ruling class. Hillary clinton is a member of
the ruling class. Whatever donald trump is, put hes representing and hes speaking towards the working class. So, we cant forget. I think one of the things and if Hillary Clinton wins the presidency, she needs to be mindful that this split is real. Theres real reason for the split. Then theres trump, the individual, and what hes doing and thats a different story. Look, i think his supporters, look, theyre so frustrated with washington, they sort of discount half the stuff. P mean, you know, how many people around the table right now have said, oh, god, six months ago were sitting there going, trump doesnt mean half the stuff he says. I think many of his supporters do sort of say the same thing. But, you know, on the russia stuff, at what point are we not supposed to take him at his word . This is something i think, you know, that ultimately is going to backfire on him. I do. I had a letter from a reader on friday who said, i dont care if hes unqualified. Im going to vote for him to stick it to people like you. That was the sentiment. I think there is a lot of that. Thats mptant. But the fact still remains that he never stepped up. He only doubled down. He never stepped and never even tried. He hasnt. Gary johnson admitted he knows something. He hasnt even tried to think about what impact he might be having on this country or what impact he could have. He hasnt tried to educate himself. He hasnt tried to tell the truth. Hes still doing a reality show and having fun at his whim and laughing. Its not funny. Its not funny. Nick, thank you. Chuck todd, thank you, as well. The Vice President ial nominees are getting their first Intelligence Briefings while there is a new controversy around Donald Trumps comments about the officials he met with. Governor mike pence will get his first classified intelligence briefing in indiana today. A day after democratic senator tim kaine had his session in new york. But it is the republican nominees briefing that is drawing attention. After he and adviser, retired general Michael Flynn said intelligence officials expressed their dismay with the Obama Administration. Our leadership, barack obama, did not follow what our experts and our truly, when they call it intelligence, its there for a reason, said to do. I was very, very surprised in almost every instance. I could tell they were not
happy. You were there. Did you see that . Yeah, i sure did. The intelligence that we received in the last two briefings were in stark contrast to the policy decisions that are being made. Thats you coming up with that deduction. In the briefing did they look and Say Something and then look at him like, this or this . They would say the intelligence professionals, as they should, those are policy decisions. So donald trump in a very, very sophisticated way was asking tough questions and would back off and say those are not our jobs and those are policy decisions, in this case, the white house is making. We would sit there and go, okay, we understand. But then reports emerged of friction within that meeting on the trump side. Sources with knowledge of the briefing told nbc news including two intelligence officials who spoke to people in the room said general flin repeatedly interrupted the briefers until governor Chris Christie who was also present intervened. According to one source the new jersey governor told flynn to calm down. Governor christie the story as a work of fiction while general flynn called it total bs. National Security Officials expressed alarm that trump spoke about his briefing while Hillary Clinton called out for trump for politicizing the practice. I think what he said was totally inappropriate and undisciplined. I would never comment on any aspect of an intelligence briefing that i received. But nbc did find that a candidate for president in 2008, clinton herself, commented on the secret briefing twice. When criticizing the george w. Bush administration. As a senator, clinton spoke of pushing for a briefing on iraq on meet the press and at an event in the winter of 2008. Her Campaign Spokesperson replied a difference between a security briefing done by the Intel Community and an iraq
policy briefing by bushs department of defense. So, moving on now. Joining us on set managing editor of Bloomberg Politics and co host of all due respect Mark Halperin and deputy Editorial Page EditorBrett Stevens. New york times columnist frank bruni and former executive director of the wmd commission dr. Evelyn farkus. Good tahave you all onboard. Thanks, mika. We did a little poll here and brett was like, i want to talk about putin. All the ignorant statements coming out of Donald Trumps mouth. Let brett begin. And tell us why this isnt resonating more deeply with the American People because the polls are showing trump gaining. Yeah, look, thats the mystery to me. I never thought id live to see the day where the republican
candidate is soft on russia and soft on the former kgb agent who runs it. But this sort of man crush that donald trump has with putin, i think, has reached a point where its somewhere between stupid and scary. Stupid in the sense that contrary to what trump said, putin does not have control kind of complete control of russia that he claims there are these separate verticals of power and shows ignorance about how power works in russia. But whats scary is you have a man who is running for the leadership of the worlds leading democracy constantly expressing admiration for strong men tactics and strong man appeal. If you think of this as a global phenomenon. Someone like victor orbon in pungary. The rise of sort of these populous leaders increasing, trump seems to fit that pattern. So, its hard to explain the
appeal of trumpeting someone like Vladimir Putin politically speaking to americans. But it sort of speaks of a trend in Global Politics that we should be worried about. At this stage of the game especially. Mike . Evelyn, if you degrade the two major candidates, Hillary Clinton and donald trump thank you for mentioning her. We have to talk more about her exper tatise and how these othe guys are amateurs. Go ahead. I think its amateur hour. Hes trying to drag us back to the thanksgiving kiddy table except the stakes are really high and were the leader of the family, if you will. Hillary clinton i watched her in the senate and i watched her when i was working in the pentagon. She is confident, she knows what shes doing. I think its a tragedy that we have to compare her to donald trump and ill leave out poor gary johnson. You guys did a fantastic job with that yesterday. Shes confidence and she knows how Intelligence Briefings work
and never try to use what the inteliance officligence officer telling her publicly. The idea that they had bad body language was probably because they were pressing him to talk about policy, which is not their role. Mike pence knew that. Frank, what we deal with here is mika is speaking about it for weeks on end now. Is this tsunami of lies that come from the Trump Campaign and from the candidate himself. One of them the other night came out in the debate. The tweet about sexual assaults in the military, which was staggering when you read the tweet that he said, yeah, thats a true tweet. He said Something Like i stand by the tweet and then he backed away from the tweet. Which is what he does all the time. There it is. He seems to not understand that issue at all. He said we need a mechanism for prosecuting these sort of offenses within the military. That exists and the whole debate is whether to take these outside the chain of command. His remarks on that suggested to me that he knows absolutely nothing about that issue, that debate. Evelyn, if you look at that and look at what bret brought to the table and you look at the piece that i read on Intelligence Briefings, what exactly would what would be the impact or the danger of a Trump Presidency do you think . First and foremost. First of all, you guys touched on it already. This crazy flattery. I am waiting for kim jungun to come out and Say Something crazy and all thuter countries that have secretary carter went out publicly together with the chairman and joint chiefs of staff. They gave a list of the other countries theyre concerned with. Iran, north korea, china, et cetera. These countries can flatter donald trump and get a better leg up at the table. He is very much affected by
flattery. You just have to look at putins objectives. That is the most important thing. The guy has consistently repeatedly violated International Law by invading his neighboring countries and by conducting cyberattacks on his neighboring countries and now on the United States. Theres a whole list of things that Vladimir Putin has done all in the service of his objectives, which is to control his area, the geographic periphery and in a way that runs counter to our interests and our valus and we can see that playing out in syria today. For example. A normal republican candidate would be attacking mrs. Clinton for being the author of the russia reset. Would be saying the Obama Administration trusted the russian government. We got bad deals with new start. Were living in an increasingly destabilized world. We need to assert american
leadership here. But the attack is coming from this completely different place. And its just so radically out of step with what every conservative or what every republican president since the days of Dwight Eisenhower has said and thought. On had reset issue, Hillary Clinton called it already in 2012. She said that putin is trying to reestablish a soviet spear of influence. E said that way early on. She knows she has some ammunition and i agree with you. Its shocking. Its shocking that he compares our sitting president and even if you dont respect him as a president , you should respect the office. The fact that he would disparage president obama in a comparison with putin is, to me, again, another appalling shock. One after another. Mark halperin . Why do elites not like . No Major Party Nominee should be
praising putin like this and not criticizing him. Its disrespectful to our president to make the comparison. Elites dont like that and its incompetent and ill go back to your first question, does this hurt him with real voters . The real voters he needs to win the election . I think hes doing it because he was trying to make president obama see more negative. Im just not sure that real voters who he needs to win the election needs to care about this the way he does. How the Clinton Campaign separate the differences over what has happened to their lives over the last 8, 10, 15 years from the candidate himself . From trump . How can clinton go at that . To talk more about how their lives will be better, particularly economically, if she wins. She has to own the economy. Look, madeline albright. You know, evelyn and i talked
about the danger of a Trump Presidency. Madeline albright came on our show and it is worth reiterating given what he has said lately that its the trump candidacy, which is causing danger right now to our country. I think internationally and within the country. And i hope people dig deeper and see whats happening here and i wish republicans in washington would stand by their beliefs. Around intime before commissioner bratton took over his first time and a lot of you will remember this in new york city in some years in the 90s over 2,000 murders a year. From 1994 to present, so much has changed. And this progress has been sustained. If it stayed around that level of homicides, literally, 29,000 more new yorkers would have been lost to us in the intervening years. 29,000 people who i believe
their lives were saved because of the changes that were made starting back in 1994. Commissioner, i just want tathank you, again. I will never tire of thanking you for all that youve done for this city. That was new york city mayor bill de blasio credding the policing efforts that have saved the number 28,826 lives. The man chiefly responsible for that turn around outgoing commissioner of the new York City Police department bill bratton joins us now as we get ready to look back at september 11th, if you can believe 15 years ago. Which is really stunning how time goes by. Lets start there. New york city then and now and preparing moving forward. How does it look from your standpoint . Well, its been nothing short of amazing. The turn around in downtown
since 9 11. The revit luization of that area is absolutely incredible. Who would have thought 15 years ago on that day as we commemorate that day how different it is down there. The population has doubled and one of the economic engines of the city. One of the safest spots in the city, speaking about safety. Today we have a commemoration procession down there honoring the Police Officer os who were lost on that day and certainly 9 11 well honor all the lives that have been lost. When people think of new york, they think largely of manhattan and Lower Manhattan now especially in this period of time september 11th, 15 years out. New york is so huge and so overwhelming. You have 36,000 Police Officer os. Youve got, youve got the bronx. Youve got brooklyn. Youve got queens. The degree of difficulty we just showed a clip from the
chicago police superintendent, the degree in difficulty and how you manage the degree of difficulty to keep felonies down and murders down in such a sprawling, racially integrated place. 40 of new york city population is foreign born. 86 Million People and growing. New york is effectively five different cities. Each of the boroughs is distinctly different from the other and over 300 distinctly different neighborhoods. Its not this entity that most people think about. That is the focus over the last 20 some years decentralize policing by neighborhood. Each neighborhood is different and each neighborhood has different needs. Gene robinson. Commissioner, if you look at crime rates and murder rates across the country and major cities across the country theres been a slight uptick in the last year or so, but, basically, theyre half of what
they were in the 90s. I mean, theyre way down. Yet, chicago is an outlayer. Why so many shootings and so many murders and what can potentially be done about it . Well, chicago is among a number of outliars. Detroit, baltimore experiencing the same pivot. The pivot of some 20 years of crime and now particularly shootings and murders. An uptick in many major american cities. But ironically as bad as it is right now, its not as bad as it was in the 90s. Terms of perspective. What is going on there, i wish i had some answers. The size of their police force is proportionately larger than most cities have. A mixed population, like most
american cities. I think the problem, the superintendent of the police talk about gun laws that just dont meet the reality of whats going on factor. He talked about the number sheer number of guns. Hes correct. They seize a lot of guns. Twice as many as los angeles and new york combined. So theres just thats a core issue there. The amount of guns and the failure of the laws and government to address that particular issue. Sam. So, gene, the broader statistics are right that crime is a lot further than down than it was in the 90s. Yet we are also living in a time where there is obvious friction between certain communities, predominantly africanamerican communities and the police. Is that friction always going to exist . Is there a way to get beyond that or do we always have to figure out where the delicate balance is between a Robust Police force that can get crime dropped and Community Relations . How do you balance those two . Thats the idea. It is like a doctor. Each city is a different patient. Each police chief is diagnosing different illnesses. The secret is really to try to meet that concern of policing thats too intense with appropriate levels of policing to in fact ensure public safety. In l. A. When i left l. A. In 2009 in that extraordinarily racially divided city. You have not seen Race Relations flare up in l. A. To a significant degree for a significant period of time. Same with new york. Despite all the tensions there, the city still remains a remarkably safe place. Weve just had the safest summer in the history of the city. At a time when you read the papers youd think we are are at each others throats in the city. Crimes are at an alltime low. Arrests and summonses are down dramatically. We are reaping what i describe as the peace dividend. We are finding some common ground. We are in some respect being able to see each other. So im optimistic about the issue. You have one of those incomplete beards. Thats not nice. Actually, really not nice. I think it is perfect. Thank you, i appreciate that. Here we go. We have a lot to get to. I think were hearing now i think were hearing some strength from Republican Leaders who finally realize or finally can come to terms with the fact that they have to be strong and speak out strongly against the republican nominee given all the incredibly inane and Dangerous Things he says. So here we go. Donald trumps renewed praise for russian president Vladimir Putin came under criticism yesterday as Hillary Clinton laid down a challenge for republicans to rebuke or stand
with his comments. If he says great things about me, im going to say great things about him. He is really very much of a leader. You can say isnt that a terrible thing. The man has very strong control over a country. Now it is a very different system and i dont happen to like the system. But certainly in that system hes been a leader far more than our president has been a leader. What would Ronald Reagan say about a republican nominee who attacks americas generals and heaps praise on russias president . Every Republican Holding or seeking office in this country should be asked if they agree with donald trump. Okay. So what you first saw was one of Donald Trumps many disturbing comments that show sort of lack of knowledge, a lack of depth on anything, including the important, complicated relationship or lack thereof with russia. Then clinton challenging republicans to do what somebody
needs to do, which is speak up to what is wrong. Paul ryan finally found his way to a microphone. And im thinking i havent seen this yet but im thinking he directly addressed donald trump. Finally. Take a look. I read the little snippet. Let me say this about Vladimir Putin. Vladimir putin is an aggressor that does not share our interests. Vladimir putin is violating the sovereignty of neighboring countries. Its certainly appearing that he is conducting in state sponsored Cyber Attacks on what appears to be our political system. That is not acting in our interests and that is an adversarial stance and is he acting like an adversary. The concern though of donald trump praising Vladimir Putin. I made my points about putin clear right there. Ill just leave it at that. Im not going to sit up here and do the tit for tat on what donned saided last night and the
night before. That is not my job. Still comfortable voting for him to be commander in chief. Ill leave it at that. Can you imagine if Hillary Clinton called our generals rubble and was praising vladimir puten . They would literally run her out of the country. It is interesting to listen to trump and his bromance with putin, of course it shows something about his psychology and his mind. Thats the kind of leader he would want to be. I think he wants to be a dictator. I think there is an envy there. You put your hands to your face. What a disappointment. I reached out to several republicans yesterday. From my vein of whats left of the establishment. They said this is just so stunning. I called one former advisor of mitt romney and he said im having a wake. I said what happened . He said, no, for the gop. And i have reached out to three people in the trump camp yesterday and i said what is the
deal what is it . They said he thinks hes strong, not good. I said i dont believe you. I believe thats what you think he should think. Thats not what he thinks. He just says hes strong full stop. One thing about donald trump, he shows his hand. This is a man who looks at that man and goes thats what a leader is. Look, by the way, hes in control. Well, yes, because he controls the media and he is a dictator. It is stunning. The party may need to step back. Part of this is not just trump. Part of this is about obama. A lot of this putin praise started in 2014 with the annexation of crimea. You can find quotes from Rudy Giuliani at that time before trump even jumped in saying Vladimir Putin is what a leader should be because he is authoritative, hes taking very direct stands on the geopolitical stage and he is running around obama. Those are quotes of Rudy Giuliani at the time. I think a lot of this is because people on the republican side dont like obama. They think that Vladimir Putin is best on the international stage. Mike pence yesterday. Yeah. Mike pence. Do we have that sound bite . I found that to be stunning. This is trumps running mate. Thank you, mike. Lets show that right now. I think its inarguable that Vladimir Putin has been a stronger leader in his country than barack obama has been in this country. And thats going to change the day that donald trump becomes president of the United States of america. Id like to know what trump thinks about adolf hitler. Excuse me. So gene writes in the Washington Post no, no, no. Hes a dictator. Donald trumps raging eye goe mania. I should point out donald trump mentioned in the commander in chief forum that putin called him brilliant. What he meant was you are a bright, shiny object. Thats different like like intellectually brilliant. He didnt say that. No, he didnt. Gene, you write this. The most revealing moment in the president ial candidates first joint Forum Wednesday night came when donald trump told the world how much he admires Vladimir Putin. Never mind that the russian strongman invaded ukraine and seized crimea. Never mind that he supports the butcher Bashar Al Assad in syria. Never mind that so many of his political opponents end up murdered or imprisoned. Putin, you see, once paid trump a compliment. If he says great things about me, trump told moderator matt lauer, im going to say great things about him. There you have it, folks. The distilled essence of trumps disgraceful campaign. Its not about immigration or Foreign Policy or making America Great again. Whatever that means. Its entirely about trump and this raging ego mania. I think eugene nailed everything right there. I really mean everything. It is no. It is all about trump. And i think just you dont
even have to step back to look at this. Vladimir putin. Mike pence says hes a strong leader. Shame on mike pence who i thought was an honorable person. How can he live with himself. And a dedicated conservative. And i cannot believe he said what he said yesterday. Yes, he is a strong leader in his country. He controls the media. He kills journalists. He kills political opponents. So, sure, he controls his country in a way that maybe donald trump wants to control the United States. For some reason all these insipid dangerous blurts are so accepted. Mike barnicle, i agree with you, when i heard pence saying what he said, something inside me died even more. Do you agree . Well, supposedly he was the more reasonable of the two on that ticket. Right. Stu stevens made the point if barack obama had said any of this stuff in 2008, every single republican would have called for him not to just renounce his comments but literally leave the president ial race and maybe resign from the senate. You know . It is just remarkable how you can change your tone when your candidate is the one saying it. You guys i saw senator corker here this week and i thought he was more forthcoming than he has been of late. Really . Well, they cornered him yesterday and he went even further. John mccain was literally running from the cameras. But in the elevator before hitting door close said putin is a thug and a criminal and a killer. I mean republicans are so the modern Republican Party to the degree it has stood for anything over the last 20 years has stood for everything that putin is against. But theyre standing ining
weakness now. I agree with you. If you take week in its entirety, i thought clinton had a great day yesterday. Before she got on her plane she got herself on offense on this point about putin. I think she always sort of advances her cause when the republicans split apart. I think this praise for putin frays the party almost to the degree the muslim man did. So in terms of what she accomplished yesterday. This comment about the generals, i called them right after and i said which generals . Who is he talking about . They have no answer. And i think to the degree that nothing has changed in a long time in this race. To the degree that somebody could change, if republicans force answers on some of these claims. Let me ask you a question. When trump praises putin, do you think donald trump understands the true role and limitations of the executive office of the president of the United States . No. No. No clue. He certainly doesnt understand the commander in chief role. He doesnt understand that the commander in chief has control of the american military. He doesnt understand that. He doesnt understand the way the system works. Theres so much that he doesnt understand that he doesnt even understand that. And thats the challenge for Hillary Clinton as we move on here. Because this is a woman who is whether you agree or not with her policies, incredibly prepared for the office of the presidency and has prepared for this campaign and has website and policy papers that are just people argue she has to sort of try and distill because theres so much information because she is so prepared. What shes trying to do and what you see her struggling with is having to dumb herself down to deal with this idiot on the other side. And its even harder because its like how do you what
floating shiny object of stupidity do you attack that comes out of his mouth . And instead of how do you debate someone like this . Matt lauer found it. We found it talking to him. I just want to Say Something about people who think they know how to moderate commander in chief forums and have all these things to say about what happened the other night. In a short amount of time, to try and catch all the ridiculous things that came out of Donald Trumps mouth and follow up, youd end up having three hours. Bob woodward came on our show in washington and was very critical of me and joe. You need to ask him the tough questions. Check out this montage of our town hall compared to a competing networks town hall and how many touch questions we asked him. How many followups we asked him. He doesnt answer. And it seems to be okay with the American People. We told bob he doesnt answer. Well show you in fact donald trump is going to be on next
hour. You take it away. And bob sat there completely at a loss trying to get this guy to answer anything with anything truthful as he just threw crap against the wall. Just out of his mouth, out of nowhere. And the followup for even bob woodward think about that. Think about that for a second. Was difficult. He was just absolutely after the interview he looked at us and he just put his hands in the air like, okay, i get it. So its actually its how the American Public is ingesting this information. Because donald trump has the ability to make it sound credible because he can use facial expressions or use his talent of being on tv to make stupidity sound credible. We have to be smarter as viewers. But you just hit it. Theyve accepted him. Thats the point. Its not on matt lauer. They have accepted him. People beat us up for grading him on a curve. He goes to mexico, he takes the
stage. He has 24 passable minutes. Thats not our judgment. Thats what the public sees. And this ability to connect on a gut level, thats his thing. Still ahead on morning joe, mark cuban says the markets will tank if donald trump is elected president. He joins us in just a bit. With another cheery prediction or two. If youve never heard of the city of aleppo before yesterday, turns out you were not alone. It took a political gaffe to turn attention to a crisis with no sign of ending. Yep we are all in for our customers. Ally. Do it right. In the aftermath of the conventions, Hillary Clinton had opened up a sizable lead in certain key swing states. But now many of those wide margins are beginning to erode. Lets start with a new quinnipiac poll. In florida Hillary Clinton found donald trump deadeven. 47 47 . Clinton and trump are completely flipflopped when it comes to support mon mention and women voters there. In pennsylvania, a state where clinton has looked dominant, shes suffering from a fivepoint swing in trumps favor and yet still leads 48 43 . In ohio numbers have also swung points in trumps favor but he now leads by one point, though inside the marginf error. When you add Third Party Candidates to the mix oh, bo trumps lead grows to four. Third place libertarian gary johnson surging six points to 14 . One North Carolina poll, Suffolk University poll, shows trump in
the lead by three but the quinnipiac poll in the tar heel state shows clinton hanging on to a fourpoint lead with gary johnson polling at 15 . All of those polls were taken, of course, before yesterday morning. Thats when gary johnson had his nowinfamous moment right here on morning joe. What would you do if you were elected about aleppo . About . Aleppo. And what is aleppo . Youre kidding. No. Aleppo is in syria. Its the its the epicenter of the refugee crisis okay, got it. Got it. Did you have a brain freeze moment or was it was it that the phrase aleppo threw you . What no excuse. I was thinking in terms of acronym, aleppo. Thats no excuse whatsoever. But the dynamics in play in
syria are is that youve got the assad regime up against the Free Syrian Army which we support that are allied with the islamists, isis. And you cant make this stuff up. Johnson released a statement of that appearance on the view, he said he began his day setting aside any doubt that im human. I blanked. It happens. Can i name every city in syria . No. Should i have identified aleppo . Yes. Do i understand its significance . Yes. As governor, there were many things i didnt know off the top of my head but i succeeded by surrounding myself with the right people, getting to the bottom of important issues and making principled decisions. It worked. That is what a president must do. Mike, you wrote a piece in the daily beast entitled i asked gary johnson about aleppo. I dont blame him for not knowing. In part, you write this. Maybe you saw it. Maybe it caught your eye and caused you to stop for a moment. The picture displayed the stunned, bloody body of a 5yearold boy seated in the back of an ambulance, face filthy, smeared with blood. Eyes vacant from shock. Still alive. A survivor of an aerial Bombing Campaign in his neighborhood on a street where war never ends. In a city called aleppo. In a fractured country called syria. Much of the world wept for the boy but the tears and the heartfelt sorrow soon disappeared. Just the way the commitment of so many Public People to remember the veterans and their families diminishes and then disappears once the election is over. Just the way they forget their duty to do their jobs, to make government work instead of trying to make it ungovernable. Gary johnson could not answer a simple question. Heres another one for the rest of the world. What difference would it make to our lives and our childrens
lives if you become president . Ask it. And keep asking it. It is its hard in this campaign, mike. Id love you to continue with your thoughts there. To get to the serious issues with some of the topics that seem to take center stage. Well, governor johnson is certainly not alone in his momentarily inability to talk about aleppo. None of the candidates really have talked about it. We havent heard about syria a lot. We havent heard about the middle east a lot from any of them. Have you . No. The great irony of this is that social searches for aleppo went off the charts yesterday and took a brain fart from a president ial candidate to get into one of the more pressing humanitarian crises in modern age. Youre right. We dont really talk about it unless it is thrust into our political conversation. But there is a story in the
news every day, whether you read a paper or go online about the humanitarian our secretary of state or president or whatever party you are in i think john kerry works on this what . Seven days a week . This is not just about our broken politics or the broken way we cover them. This is about our complete detachment from what our government does. This is what our leaders do every day. And i have been a harsh critic of the inability or refusal to enforce a red line in syria. But everything that happened afterward is everybodys business. There is a where do people think the muslim ban came from . It came from a refugee crisis that came from the fact that 5 yearolds are getting killed in syria. How people dont know aleppo stunned me coming up on morning joe, banks behaving badly. Wells fargo pays a massive fine over sales tactics. Well talk about that in business before the bell. But first, what will he tweet at donald trump next. Mark cuban joins us live. Youre watching morning joe. Well be right back. They are. Do i look smarter . Yeah, a little. Youre making money now, are you investing . Well, ive been doing some research. Let me introduce you to our broker. How much does he charge . I dont know. Okay. Uh, do you get your fees back if youre not happy . dad laughs wow, youre laughing. Thats not the way the world works. Well, the worlds changing. Are you asking enough questions about the way your wealth is managed . Wealth management, at charles schwab. Hillary clinton im Hillary Clinton and i approve this message. Vo in times of crisis america depends on steady leadership. Donald trump knock the crap out of them, would you . Seriously. Vo lear thinking. Do trump i know more about isis than the generals do, believe me. Vo and calm judgment. Donald trump and you can tell them to go fu k themsees. Vo because all it takes is one wrong move. Donald trump audio only i would bomb the sh t out of them. Vo just one. Everyone thought i was crazy to open a hotel here. Everyone said its so hard to be a musician, but i cant imagine doing anything else. Now that the train makes it easier to get here, the neighborhood is really changing. Im always hopping on the train, runninall over portland. I have to go wherever the work is. Trains with innovative Siemens Technology help keep cities moving, so neighborhoods and businesses can prosper. I can book 3 or 4 gigs on a good weekend. Im booked solid for weeks. It takes ingenuity to make it in the big city. In the event donald wins, i have no doubt in my mind the market tanks. So i literally have put on a more than 100 hedge that ill put on stronger if it looks like there is a better chance what does that mean . If donald trump wins in november, what is mark cuban doing . If the polls look like there
is a decent chance that donald could win, ill put a huge hedge on thats over 100 of my equity positions and my bond position as well that protects me just in case he wins. That was mark cuban with that prediction earlier this week. Well speak with the billionaire businessman in just a moment. But first, msnbc Political Correspondent kasie hunt joins is table. Youve been following the campaigns efforts on the ground. Weve been talking all morning about how difficult it is to push back against Donald Trumps onslaught of very sort of basic primitive statements that are ignorant. This is about the mechanics of the election. Right . Getting people out to vote. We have a new Clinton Campaign memo that shows democrats are putting even more resources into battleground states. They are opening new coordinated Campaign Offices raising the totals to 51 in florida. 38 in pennsylvania and 30 in
North Carolina. This comes as the latest counts according to local and National Media show trump with just two offices in florida. Four in pennsylvania and none in North Carolina. Now last week the Republican National committee did announce that they are hiring hundreds of new field staff. Weve reached out to the campaign and are waiting confirmation on those trump numbers. What this really shows you especially as the polls show this race tightening, if this is going to be as close as the basic numbers would suggest that people are going to come home to their respective parties, this is something that can really make a difference. Even mitt romneys campaign which is far ahead of where Trumps Campaign is now, theyve sent a team of their top people around right at the end of the election. They all looked around and realized wow, the Obama Campaign is way ahead of us. They are talking door to door with people in iowa. Trump campaigns just nowhere near that right now. The get out to vote effort is usually worth one to three points in an election. So it is a big deal. Four offices in florida. Joining us now from dallas
texas, billionaire investor and owner of the dallas mavericks, mark cuban. He endorsed Hillary Clinton for president in july and, mark, ill start with just how do you even how would you even characterize the state of the president ial campaign right now . Its crazy obviously. Really, i dont even think it is about donald trump anymore. When i talk to the people no one is excited about donald. It is more about how they feel about secretary clinton. I think when you look at secretary clintons negatives, thats whats driving the election. And i like the fact that now she has the press on her plane. That will allow her to drive the media topics a lot more strongly because donald had been dominating the topics up unl then. So i think this really has nothing to do with donald trump. It is 100 about whether or not secretary clinton can connect to voters and whether or not she can get her ground game going and get them out of their houses and to the polls. Mark, when you were on with neil, you told him about donald trump that the guy is a master at headline porn. Yep. Talk about that and what happens because he is such a master at porn. You learn this in the sports industry, right . Where you say i love this player, i love him, i love him, then you trade him the next day. You drive the topic so you dont deal with the real issues. Donald is a master of that. He knows that as long as everybody in your industry has to fill up your entire show. And he knows as long as he gives you topics, things to discuss, headline porn, you dont get to address the real issues. And so weve got a wasituation where weve got a president ial candidate that really has president ial turrets. I say that with all respect to the disorder. Turrets is a serious disorder. Thats why i say that, this uncertainty thats coming from
him is crazy but it drives the media attention. Mark, it is donny. Whats up, buddy . I agree with you as far as the market. We know one thing markets dont like is instability. Thats what trump is all about. Rumors said you were going to stand in for trump. How would you act as trump if you were standing in . What do you think hillary should be anticipating . My feeling is he is just going to the same way she got a little thrown by lauer the other night. Multiply that by 10 or 15 and everything out of trumps mouth hes just going to throw jabs, trying to keep her on the defensive. Shes got to smile. Literally everything time he says something stupid shes got to smile because thats what will drive him crazy. He goes nuts when somebody thinks he isnt smart. There is a reason why he always mentions where he went to school. There is a reason why he needs
to have his ego stroked. He doesnt have confidence in his own intellectual ability apparently and so when you question that, even with a subtle smile, a little giggle, a little shake your head, he will go nuts. Thats what i would tell her to do. I tote ally understand what u mean by headline porn. Having said that, weve interviewed donald trump many, many times. Weve asked him the second and the third question about the wall. Weve asked him about his policies. Weve followed up. Weve pushed him. Weve prodded him and hes usually vomited out some insipid answer or some answer that isnt an answer. So at some point this is on the people watching, isnt it . No. It really comes down do you win or lose. The Trump Campaign knows that. Look, if im sitting there in your chair and im interviewing him but they might want him. Im sorry . They might want him because theyre listening to these
answers that are nonanswers. Theyre listening to often lies or inaccuracies. There is always that chance that they might want him. But i think the reality is, it is what they dont want. I think Hillary Clinton is not giving them enough reasons for them to want her. Thats really whats at play here. And i was going to say, if i was sitting there interviewing trump, what i would say to him is, you dont understand the question, do you . I would just get to the heart of the matter. I know you guys have tried to reassert him back to the topic often, but i would get to the heart of the matter. Do you understand this question . Then i would ask a followup question. Do you know where aleppo is . Do you know what the issues are . Do you know whats the history of the city and the conflict . If you stay with it, he will crumble. But the problem is, everybody gets to the point where you get frustrated, you have you have a script or a schedule to follow, and that makes it difficult for you to keep on
just banging on him. But thats what it is going to take. Hey, mark, can you moderate one of the debates . Because you are absolutely right inny you are pursuit of donald trump. You are absolutely right. I wish i could. I would crush him. Its kasie hunt. I actually wanted to ask you about the debates. There was some reporting that you had been potentially asked or were under consideration to play donald trump opposite Hillary Clinton. I wonder if that ever happened no. Even if you werent, what would your advice be to Hillary Clinton going into these debates . Just as i mentioned earlier. First, i was not asked. Its never been brought up to me at all. I would love to help her. I think i could guide her through the email question specifically. But what i would tell her to do is smirk a lot at his answers. I know they tell them not to react at all, but in donalds case, hes going to notice if shes shaking her head. Hes like a schoolboy, right . If shes smiling at his answers. Not a lot because you cant be over the to
but that will get to him. Because again, if you question his intellectual ability, that drives him nuts. This is sam stein here. I kind of agree with that, but dont you run a little bit of a risk when you are maybe dismissive is not the right word, but it sort of is dismissive of him, that you almost cede him a platform, it looks like youre almost insulting the people who gravitate to the guy. Right . No question. But this is different. Explain it then. When you throw these types of purges, when you roll your eyes. You guys will do it in the show. You arent going to do it for every single answer even though that might be challenge to stop yourself from doing it every answer. But youre going to have to just pick your spots. When there is something that should have some gravitas to it, should have some foundation in the answer, thats when you hit him. You just smirk and then the moderator probably is going to say, so, secretary clinton, i
notice youre smishi ingsmirkin answer. Bam. Youve got him. Because his response is going to be, okay, what happened here . Mind games basically. Just to deal with someone capacity. Ng his intellectual mind games. Thats what were talking about. It is mind games. Yeah, thats what it comes down to because were not talking about substance any longer. Fair enough. Were not. Mark, you would have to have a mind to play mind games, correct . Not going to go there, donny. Donnys been going there all morning. Mark cuban, thank you so much. Well take the advice. Still ahead, congress returned to work this week. Did anyone notice they were on vation in the first place . The chairman the House Democratic caucus congressman javier basera is our xweguest. A lot of children, a lot of babies being carried in the womb are going to end up in a very, very lifelong serious situation where theyre fundamentally compromised. That was Vice President joe biden yesterday alongside fellow democrats on capitol hill calling for congress to act on a funding package to combat the zika virus. Joining us now from capitol hill, chairman of the House Democratic caucus, congressman javier basera from california. Good to have you on the show. Thank you. Is that going to make it through . Where do we stand on anything getting done in washington . What examples can you give us that perhaps represent hope for the future . You just mentioned we were on a sevenweek you called it a vacation. It still feels like even though
were back, were not really doing real work and folks havent realized that it is time to leave the vacation. The fact that youve got over 1,000 some 1,700 women, american women, whether in mainland or in our territories, who are showing signs of the zika virus who are pregnant, or whether it is the fact that in flint, michigan, residents are still afraid to drink the water from their tap because of the lead poisoning that occurred because of their republican governor and his state officials, there is a sense that were not really doing what matters to americans. What have we done since the mass shooting in orlando . We havent had one vote yet to try to provide some relief from the gun violence in america. What we do see is more investigations about emails of secretary clinton. It is time for us to get to work. What does that mean . What did you guys do all day . What is a day like . Im serious. What happens there . I mean i was a page on capitol
hill years ago and people were working at desks and stuff and they were running around and doing votes and senator Strom Thurmond was pinching butts, but at least he was doing something. Joe remembers the day. Well, well take up legislation, most of which will not go anywhere. It is more sort of for face value to message but it is not really going to become law. There will be hopefully some things that will. Were told were going to have a vote today to allow victims of the 9 11 terrorist attack to be able to sue state governments that may have been responsible, foreign governments that may have been responsible, including saudi arabia, for part of that attack. Maybe Something Real will come out of this but for the most part, zika virus continues to spread. Flint, michigan residents still dont have drinking water. Weve done nothing on gun violence. We dont do anything to deal with the opioid epidemic. What we do do is we hold more hearings to investigate the investigators on the email situation with Hillary Clinton. So now the fbi is under a
microscope because republicans in the house were unsatisfied with the results of the fbi investigation. I dont get what a day is like there. Lets focus on the zika virus and legislation. Okay. So what are you doing . The two sides are basically essentially riders on this bill. Were talking about a rider to defund some planned parenthood. There is also question about unused monies. How do the two sides get bridged . What can you give up, what can they give up to actually get some monny to combat the zika virus . It is not abouu the democrats putting any riders. Were not trying to load up this important emergency legislation with things that shouldnt belong in there. Were simply saying lets treat this the way we treat any emergency. You dont start asking when you have an earthquake, well, lets find out how many people really died or how many buildings really fell before we try to provide the emergency relief. Lets get out there. Fema didnt wait when louisiana started having the flooding to say, wait, lets see how bad the damage is before we go in. We should not wait simply because not everybody in america has been bitten by a mosquito that is carrying the zika virus to go after the zika virus. Democrats, experts on health care have told us what we need. We need resources to find a vaccine to combat zika. Republicans said well give you some of the money but you have to make sure Womens Health care wont get funded through planned parenthood. Take money out of the ebola account to make sure ebola doesnt resurface to take care of zika. We are saying no, thats not the way you treat emergencies. Do what the generals say, provide resource oresources. Obviously democrats have been focused on the impact donald trump could have down ballot. Best Case Scenario. How many seats can democrats win back in the house this time around . Best Case Scenario skys
the limit. Donald trump is going to bring them as low as democrats can go high when it comes to this election. Is it really realistic to say you guys could win back the house . Absolutely. Talk to people on the ground today. Ive been in virginia. I was in florida. I was in minnesota. Ive been in nevada pretty recently. Every one of those places are candidates but more importantly the voters are feeling like this is going to be an era and a year of change. So we feel very good, not just because of trump. But remember, as hard as it is to see trump seriously, Republican Leaders have gotten behind donald trump so we have to take him seriously. My sense is that where trump goes, so goes the Republican Party. In closing without talking about hearings about Hillary Clintons emails and without talking about the actual riders, what are you going to do with your day today in washington to try and maybe get those riders taken off the bill . What are you going to do today to try and get that zika bill passed . Were doing everything we can to convince some of our republican colleagues that we should not play games and try to tack on unnecessary measures to the zika funding. We should get it passed, get it passed quickly youre doing that right now. What are you going to do in your day today to continue to effort . Were trying to talk to some of our colleagues. Were making it clear that democrats will not vote for the shenanigans where youre offsetting zika funding with ebola moneys and that kind of thing. Does anybody talk to anybody . Do you go talk to people . Mika, the conversations have taken place for quite some time. It is pretty simple. We do emergency funding a certain way. It is an emergency, you get the monies to where they are needed so that people who are you going to go see today to try and convince that this funding needs to go through and that these riders need to be removed . Who are you going to physically speak to eye to eye . What are you going to do today. Chances are what im probably going to end up doing is speaking to a lot of my constituents, speaking to a lot of my colleagues but probably not a whole lot about where were going to go on zika because it is very clear where
we need to go. The Republican Leadership in the house simply needs to allow a vote to let at least the senate bill if nothing else go through which provided the funding without playing the shenanigans with all these other things. Congressman, thank you for being here. I guess the point im trying to make is that nobody talks to anybody. They just talk at each other through tvs. I cant get an answer. Democrat or republican, nothing happens in washington for a reason. His thing is a threshold line. You dont go after planned parenthood money to go after zika money. Nothing happens in washington. I dont know what a day looks like yet, donny . Im still stuck on you as a page back then with Strom Thurmond. What was that about . I have deep seeded bad memories. Well be right back. Clearly.
