Hmm. Karla ortiz. Thats going to do it for me on way too early. Ill be back on morning joe a bit later this morning. But first joe and mika pick up the coverage live from philadelphia, right now. God, you have given us wisdom. Now give us courage for the facing of this hour. Hillary clinton and tim kaine want to build an economy that works for everyone, not just the people at the top. Im reminded today of all the important fights of the past 50 years. I have privilege to represent teachers and first responders, veterans and college students. She was in massachusetts going door to door collecting the stories of children with disabilities. Unity unity Hillary Hillary can he just say to the bernie or bust people, youre being ridiculous. That kind of turned the page that moment right there. Good morning, everyone. Its july 26th. Wow. Live in philadelphia on the second just the second day of the Democratic National convention. I dont even know where to begin. Me and willie have columnist and contributor Mike Barnicle. Mark halperin and msnbc political analyst and university of Michigan School of Public Policy former democratic congressman harold ford, jr. They booed the prayer, they booed everyone early on. Really rough start. Saw tom brokaw talking about this, Mike Barnicle, go ahead and fire it if you will. He said it reminded him maybe of 1972, the chaos early on this afternoon. Chuck todd said it was like nothing he had ever seen. It was just really out of control early on. 72 in miami. I remember that distinctly. That was back in the drinking days. It was a raucous convention at the beginning, very much like last night. I have to say two things about last night. One, theres a certain sense of admiration have you to have. They booed the prayer. The Bernie Sanders people. They went way over the line at one point during the night. But last night will be remember forever because of the first lady of the United States of america. Absolutely. She sort of chuckled when you heard Sarah Silverman sound bite. Coming from a comedian, because she had been a very strong bernie supporter all throughout this campaign. She was basically saying, guys, ive turned the page. Look at the alternative. Shell fight for us. Shell never be bernie. She took a serious turn. We have bernie supporters voting for hillary. Its one of those great moments in Convention History that Sarah Silverman wouldnt have had that moment if wall m simon had been ready to come on sage. He wasnt ready to come on stage. I guess he was tuning up the final string. That gave Sarah Silverman this wonderful moment. It was a wonderful moment. Again, ive been watching so many of these speeches over the past, everybody screaming and yelling, acting like they dont have a microphone in front of them. It just drives me crazy. Suddenly you get a pro, somebody who is not a politician, somebody who hasnt been in elected office before, somebody like Michelle Obama who actually schools all the politician and says this is how youre supposed to deliver a moving speech at a convention. Michelle obama, extraordinary last night. One of the best speeches ive seen at a convention. It fused the personal with a political for a purpose. She talked about her home life to try to make the home life to make the point that Hillary Clinton should be the next president. Some of the other speeches were solid. Bernie sanders and Elizabeth Warren came after her and she was a very tough act to follow. Very tough act to follow. Bernie, though, of course, had just a massive reception. He had a good night as well. Overall a decent night for democrats fl i think mikes point early on not having seen anything like this was real. I was on the show early in the evening and it was clear from the first couple of speakers it was going to go really bad. I thought overall the enthusiasm channeled to the right way. If this is the first night. Tonight will be a better night. We get ready for tim kaine and Hillary Clinton. Lets get through the day. It started out a bit raucous as we mentioned on opening day of the Democratic Convention when the message of unity overcome by the primary reopened by those leaked party emails showing favoritism leading to rebellion around the city. The disruptions began over breakfast, spilled into the street and flooded the Convention Hall. It started after 9 00 a. M. When ousted dnc chairwoman Debbie Wasserman schultz attempted to speak at the breakfast and was shouted down by Bernie Sanders supporters. Its so wonderful to be able to be here with my home state. All right, everybody, now, settle down. Everybody settle down, please. We must under president Hillary Clinton make sure we must under president Hillary Clinton make sure that our economy works for everyone. She was insisting im not sure why she did that. Why did she insist gaveling in the convention. We said yesterday morning, we could save her trouble, not to do it. I can save people to do it. Listen, she shouldnt have done that. She was insisting gaveling a convention. Shes in an alternative political reality. Its unbelievable, mike. She goes to this thing at 9 00 and shes got to know. But how many times have you, joe, and how many times has everyone in this room seen an example where someones ego stands in front of common sense. Here ego was so involved in who she is that she didnt recognize the reality around her. I think its one of the more extreme examples, mark halperin. Ive known debbie for a long time. Im not saying that to be critical of debbie, the person. But debbie, the political figure, has been clueless through the entire process about how people feel about her and whats in the best interest of the candidate she claims to support. There have been people in the white house and people that wanted her for a long time and it took this colossal controversy to get her to go. You think about the way they targeted, to have the chair forced out on the eve of the convention. Have not only her being booed but Bernie Sanders being booed. The Convention Starts with booing. At the end of the night, thanks to Michelle Obama and other speakers, they were able to turn around. The first half of the day, if it ended like that would be the worst first day of the convention weve ever seen. It ended fine. It was a little rocky at the start. You mentioned sanders being booed. Attempted to quell his supporters. Despite the fact that our people were a minority on the platform committee, we came out of that committee with by far the most platform ever written in the history of the Democratic Party. Immediately, right now, we have got to defeat donald trump. We have got to elect Hillary Clinton and tim kaine. Brothers and sisters, this is this is the real world that we live in. Bernie sanders. Sanders he was standing up there in front of people Bernie Sanders, to his credit, has been saying the same thing for 40 to 50 years. He lit the match that ignited that fever that sweat across the country. As i said, its admiral the loyalty towards Bernie Sanders. Hes got to put this out. In november, the people who follow Bernie Sanders are going to have a couple of choices, either stay home, either vote for donald trump, reluctantly, holding their nose, however they might feel about it, vote for Hillary Clinton. He did that in his speech, made a clear case for Hillary Clinton. The truth is, the loud voices, shouting down Debbie Wasserman schultz and Bernie Sanders yesterday, polling shows that Something Like between 80 and 90 of Bernie Sanders supporters say they are going to vote for Hillary Clinton. Were seeing the loudest voices in philadelphia but most Bernie Sanders supporters will go for hillary. During the address he acknowledged his disappointment in the primary, hit on many topics in his stump speech over the last year, except the part about Hillary Clinton being president. This election is about which candidate understands the real problems facing this cub and has offered real solutions. Not just fear mongering, not just name calling and divisiveness. We need leadership in this country which will improve the lives of working families, the children, the elderly, the sick and the poor. We need leadership which brings our people together and makes us stronger. By these measures any objective observer will conclude that based on her ideas and her leadership, Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States. As willie just mentioned, a new prew Research Found 90 of those that supported Bernie Sanders in the primary now back Hillary Clinton in the election over trump. Still, it was an emotional night for Bernie Sanders supporters. Some were brought to tears. Passed out and reprinted in team hillary font in a show of solidarity. Here is what Vice President ial candidate mike pence said last night about disaffected sanders supporters. To really find themselves shut out, to look at a ticket that doesnt give voice to what obviously millions of americans who align themselves with Bernie Sanders message in their party and in their ticket i think is frustrating to them and i understand that. Again, thats their party and they can cy if they want to as the songwriter says. Its hard to imagine anybody in the room crying voting for mr. Trump or mr. Pence and i give governor pence great credit for trying but its not going to happen. At the end of the day if you look at trumps message, you look at Bernie Sanders message, Bernie Sanders is closer to Hillary Clintons message. It may take 45, 50 days but i feel confident they will come around. I dont know if you feel the same way. I spent a lot of time with sanders delegates. As willie said, these are hard core supporters. Not surprised they would be the most reluctant to change their posture for her. A lot said booing because the whole program was geared toward the notion Hillary Clinton is our nominee. Shes not our nominee yet. I think she is. But shes not been nominated formally. A lot of them want form lets cast our vote. I think a lot of people in that room will fall in love. Willie, what do you think . By the end of the night, do we have the Bernie Sanders speech or do we really have the first ladys speech to point to to say this is the moment the Democratic Party came together as one to fight again trump. I think history will remember first ladys speech as one of the greatest in history at conventions, in the pantheon of great speeches. But Bernie Sanders for the room. Chaos, Debbie Wasserman schultz, Bernie Sanders booed. The room, the prayer was booed. Sarah silvermans moment started to turn it. When the first lady walked in, the room got quiet. Lets listen to a little bit of the first ladys speech. I will never forgot that winter moment, 7 and 10 years old pile into black suvs with all those big men with guns. I saw their little faces pressed up against the window. At that moment, i realized that our time in the white house would form the foundation for who they would become. How well we managed this experience could truly make or break them. How we urge them to ignore those who questioned their fathers citizenship or faith. How we insist that the hateful language they hear from public figures on tv does not represent the true spirit of this country. How we explain that when someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you dont stoop to their level. No, our motto is, when they go low, we go high. That is the story of this country, the story that has brought me to the stage tonight. The story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation but kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today i wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves. And i watched my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent black young women playing with their dogs on the white house lawn. So dont let anyone ever tell you that this country isnt great, that somehow we need to make it great again, because this right now is the greatest country on earth. Well, there you go. [ applause ] you dont have to make America Great again, america is great. That is something that when Michelle Obama says that, she connects not just with democrats, not just with liberals, but with a lot of republicans and a lot of independents that have been saying that for a very long time. America is great. And that speech, by the way, such a moving speech. This network, a programming note, this network is going to be playing parts of that speech again four years from now at the next Republican Convention. I was very moved by it. I thought were talking about the pantheon of great speeches. We can go to ted kennedys speech in 1980 against jimmy carter. The speech it reminds me of the most is Barack Obamas 2004 speech in boston, the United States of america speech. Theres not a red state america, theres not a blue state of america, theres a United States of america. Extraordinary. And thats the message to my republican brothers and sisters that are campaigning this fall and wondering what you need to do, you need to follow that message, because people are scared. People are worried. But they still are proud of their country. As Mike Barnicle always says, thats what they have got. They have got this country, and its the greatest country in the world. Think about day one now. I thought this would happen. I really felt like, first of all, democrats know how to put on a convention. It was interesting that very rocky start. These speeches, that speech, now think about day one of the Republican Convention. Say no more. Charles in charge. We were all talking about this last week, that the democrats were going to steamroll the republicans because they were going to have one star after another star after another star. Willie, its like zeppelin in 71 followed by, you know, the Rolling Stones in 72 followed by Peter Frampton in 76. They have the stars lined up one after another after another. Last week we had scott baio followed by an underwear model, followed by a soap opera star. Followed by a plagiarized speech. Michelle obamas words. On and on, ted cruz, followed by ucf fighter, whomever. It was bizarre. Who do we have this week . More stars coming on stage. Compare speech of second place finisher. Youve got ted cruz up there refusing to endorse the nominee, getting booed on stage. Last night you have Bernie Sanders not stoking the flames of people hesitant to support the nominee but putting them down and making the case for Hillary Clinton. Michelle obama talking about living in a home slaves built and her children, parallel that story and sense of wonder to how great this country is and what hurdles we can overcome to, well, donald trump spent five minutes with me on the phone. These stories at the Republican National convention were a joke. They werent real. They werent personal. They didnt have a sense of history or connection with this country. They were like this sort of whitewash. I know they were trying to personalize donald trump but listen to Michelle Obamas speech and tell me what feels personal. You hit on what i think is the key of the greatness of her speech, how her speech will resonate. Ive seen a lot of great speeches at conventions, mario cuomo, 1984, ted kennedy, 1980, barack obama in 2004. Bill clinton in 2012. I have never seen a speech, given the presentation from a nonpolitician, the first lady. From the heart. The presentation, the content of the speech from the beginning about watching her children go off to school. Chilling. The speech was about our children. The speech was about us more than it was about politics. It really was. I draw my attention to republicans, see me with clinched fist up in the air about Michelle Obamas speech to say, i dont know Michelle Obama would appreciate what im about to say, but her optimism and her hope reminded me of Ronald Reagan who could talk about all of the problems were having and then look right at the audience, always end by saying, i believe that americas greatest days truly do lie ahead. Despite all the problems that we are facing as a country, despite all of the problems we have in our economy, despite all of the challenges across the globe, we are americans. Look where we have been. Look where we are. Look where we are going. Michelle obama, again, like barack obama in 2004, like Ronald Reagan in 1984, like Ronald Reagan in 1980, she spoke the truth. We are the last best hope for a dying world. If you cant get behind that message as a republican or a democrat, then let me buy you a ticket to another country. Because we are the greatest country on the face of the earth. Sometimes thats questioned but not oftentimes on the show, people say amen. I would agree with everything. It would be hard to plagiarize this one. Three, the optimism that was missing in cleveland, she captured it all. To mikes point, she favored the moment. She had a moment when fortunately the speech took her in this direction and she is that kind of person. She reminded us all in the only way she could that as much as we want to make great, were great where we are. Her experience and her kids experience, president obamas experience makes it clear theres no greater country on earth than ours. What she did last night, to mikes point, she put her self right there. By the way, ted cruzs familys experience, marco rubios family experience. They wouldnt tell the story. No, they wont tell the story, because they want to talk about how grim things are. I will say it. Democrats act like the world is coming to an end when a republican is sitting in the white house. Republicans act like the world is coming to ab end when democrats sit in the white house. Just stop it. We are a great country regardless of who is sitting in the white house. Ill tell you another remarkable thing about her speech last night. You think about how reluctant she was to be in politics with her husband running eight years ago. Shes given great speeches the last two conventions on behalf of her husband, someone she wanted to get elected, she did that for Hillary Clinton who they didnt have a great relationship eight years ago. She was speaking out in her own right, not just for her husband. Still ahead on morning joe, well talk about the investigation whether russia was breaking into dnc email servers. The Clinton Campaign is refusing to back off their claim that russia is at the center of wikileaks release of thousands of dnc emails in a move benefiting donald trump. The fbi probe of state sponsored hacking has expanded to other aides and organizations associated with Hillary Clinton. The New York Times also reports two years ago some clinton aides who had worked at the state department were informed accounts had been accessed by russian intelligence, fsb. A popup security warning on her computer alerting her to a suspicion of state actors trying to access it. She had reported working on memos about connections between Trump Campaign chair Paul Manafort and prorussian leaders. Manafort has dismissed claims of coordination as absurd. Here is what the Clinton Campaign said yesterday. Further experts are saying is it then because they possessed those emails that russian state actors were feeding the emails to hackers for the purpose of helping donald trump. This morning russia is dismissing claims that moscow was behind the suspected hacking. Russian foreign minister sergey lavrov reacted harshly when asked about it in front of secretary of state john kerry. U. S. , russia emails. I dont want to use three Cyber Security experts told us the dnc emails were hacked by russian intelligence. What do you say . Theres no proof of that whatsoever. We have not disclosed our source. Of course, this is a diversion thats being pushed by the campaign. Meanwhile donald trump on the road in North Carolina categorically rejected and mocked the claims and suggested relations could be improved with russia. Today you saw the rnc where they were hacked. They dont know, is it china . Is it russia . Im watching this clown who runs Hillary Clintons campaign and i heard my name mentioned. It was donald trump that stole that. Hes got some deal with russia, stole it for my benefit. Lets figure this out. Russia stole it from my the reason is that putin likes me. I never met putin all fairness. But putin like trumps. Therefore he went in and he stole it and he wants trump to win. See now if a republican said that, they would say its a conspiracy theory. Its crazy. When the democrats say it, they say, you know, maybe trump stole everything from the dnc. Ay yi yi what a group we have. But you know, when you think about it, wouldnt it be nice if we actually did get along with russia . Wouldnt it be nice . Not so bad. Wouldnt it be nice if russia and a couple of others went out and knocked the hell out of isis . Wouldnt it be nice . Nothing wrong with that. A lot of money. Very expensive. I mean, the soviet union broke up because of the wars. They spent so much money fighting in afghanistan that they literally believe me when they started fighting over in the middle east it was costing them a lot of money. Let me just answer that question, no, it would not be nice if we were allied with russia who invades crimea and suggests they will go all the way to kiev. No, would not be nice to be friends with russia and a russian government that continues to do everything they can do to prop up one of the most vicious dictators in the middle east. They dont want isis to be destroyed. They simply want to prop up a dictator. In russia putin wants to destabilize nato. He wants to destabilize europe. He wants to destabilize the baltics. Whats in putins best interest is not in the United Statess best interest. So no, its not good to cozy up to vladimir putin. Vladimir putin, once the head of the kgb in russia, his russia today,en one of its principle roles is to break up europe. They are playing a pivotal role destabilizing europe. The more donald trump talks about russia, putin, the more i want to see his tax returns to see if he ever made any money in russia. Hes boasted about doing business in russia. He just said he never met putin. We should get his tax returns. He owes it to us, the american voters. All right. Last weeks Republican Convention having no effect at all on the nbc news survey monthly weekly tracking poll which has clinton at 46 and trump at 45. Trump did see a boost in ohio. The conventions host state where they insulted the governor. Up five points, tied with clinton 45 to 45. Leading clinton in a fourway match up, 42 to 49 . In georgia, wsbt has trump and clinton neck and neck in georgia, 46 for trump, 44 for clinton while johnson at 5 , jill stein at 3. Joining is former governor of vermont and chairman of the Democratic National committee howard dean also with us. Cofounder and executive of real clear politics tom bevin. Thank you for being with us. So tom, first of all, were not going to get a really accurate look at where this race stands until we get maybe a week beyond the democratic nomination and this convention, until we have time to sort of look at both conventions and how they impact. Such a small gap, only a couple of polls conducted over the weekend. You really do have to wait until the public gets to digest what they saw in cleveland, what they are seeing here this week and get some hopefully good polling and data and see where it stands in the 100 days left. Got some bounce, the nbc poll no bounce at all. Thats usually not great news. State by state, tied in ohio, another one where they are tied in ohio. They have been tied in pennsylvania. You go, thats pretty good news for republican nominee but then you look at georgia. That race is effectively tied. Utah effectively tied. Thats pretty good for the democratic nominee. What sort of sense are you able to make not only under National Poll but state by state polls. Right now it is close. We saw four out of the last polls in ohio have the race tied. Its less than a point in florida right now. Trump is leading by less than half a point. You look at places like pennsylvania. Its certainly closer than it was four years ago. As you mentioned, the map is usually the map is locked in. Its that way in 80 or 90 . There are some states on the democratic side and republican side that could show some surprises in november. So howard dean as former head of the dnc your self, ive got to ask you about Debbie Wasserman schultz. Look, the page has been turned, the convention ended beautifully last night after the first day. What a bad beginning. How much could have been avoided if she went with it. Ive always admired her as a human being but this is not something dnc should ever have done. We have really strict rules, we are so strict that i did not vote in the vermont primary at all because voting for somebody and keeping your mouth shut is not the same as being neutral. Youre shocked. Shocked and incredibly disappointed. I know some of the people involved. I dont understand how that could happen. I really dont. When you say that could happen, you mean tipping the scale . They may have tried. I dont think they really did tip the scale. If youre for somebody, you either have stow leave and work for their campaign or shut up. You cannot have this kind of dialogue at the dnc. Very clear i think all along that she was on team hillary. So the emails back that up at this point. Im more talking about what transpired yesterday, it seemed as if she was still demanding some sort of role, did not understand the damage she was causing. That i dont know, i had out of town yesterday. I had to leave town for the day. I know nothing about the inside stuff going on here. Just in general, dnc has in its by laws that no officer may take position or show loyalty. She did the right thing, with Bernie Sanders, resigned her chairmanship. Thats the right thing to do. Dnc must be neutral. At least important people in the dnc that werent. Publicly, thanks to the russians. Harold, you obviously would agree. Do you think the Democratic Party has gotten past it . Do you think well see the next three days be more peaceful. I agree with everything. Michelle obama pushed us past, certainly turned the page. One of the things im most curious about, some of the polling, if i could ask tom this question. There are a number of voters who wont say, afraid to say they are for donald trump, look at numbers tied, sense he might be ahead. Do you believe that or something in the polling data that may suggest thats right or wrong . Its very hard to quantify that. All we have are anecdotal stories about folks. Look, this is what is so crazy about the election. Weve heard from people who are republican all their lives and are not going to vote this year. Weve also heard from people who have never voted and are going to vote for the first time. You have to look at the data and aggregate. That will give you the best indication of where these individual states stand. I agree with you, i think were going to see some surprises and polsters may not be able to capture just because of the crazy nature of this race. We always look at ohio, florida. Whats a different state this year we should be watching as we come down the homestretch that could tip the election one way or the other. You have to look at pennsylvania if youre looking at the map for trump. It starts with florida. If he doesnt win nah, its over. Moving on, if he wins ohio and can win pennsylvania, then if he wins North Carolina, holds on in North Carolina, that will do the trick for him. Thats a key state for him to keep an eye on. If not that, theres some other states that are to take a look at. Iowa could be important. New hampshire is another one. You know, some of the states out west. Colorado, nevada, arizona, which is also perhaps in play this year. So you know weve always said pennsylvania is fools gold for republicans. I certainly have for 20 years. This year you talk to pennsylvania natives, they say this year is different. Do you think its going to be tight . I do think its going to be tight. I have a question for todd at some point. I think its going to be tight because of whats happening demographically, White Working Class voters are continuing a shift towards republicans. The problem they are hemorrhaging everybody else, africanamericans and latinos. So my question to you was going to be, what about places like georgia which are completely i look at that number in georgia, theres no reason in georgia for anybody to be afraid to say they voted for donald trump. Those numbers, i think there are also smart people in conservative states, utah being another one. Certainly georgia is one of those states democrats have talked about turning blue, right, in the near future. Demographically i dont know if were there yet, its one poll i would like to see more data. Again, i mentioned arizona, georgia is the other one democrats are really targeting they would love to turn blue. Theres always talk in texas but that in the current environment is fools gold for democrats. No question changing demographics are whats at play. North carolina, go back to that state, another state thats going to be crucial and will come down to those very demographics you mentioned. Cnn poll that came out post convention, huge swing in white noncollege educated voters. 39 now in favor of trump versus clinton. Shes down around 28 among those voters. But again hes not doing well enough with the other slices of the demographic to really give him any sort of separation. Tom, thank you so much. Howard dean, thank you as well. Its the second day of the Democratic National convention. We are live. That was quite a stage. You could feel the excitement in the room. Mika was jumping. I jumped up. Msnbc political commentator and editor of the fix at the Washington Post Chris Cillizza is with us. Msnbc correspondent kasie hunt is with us as well. So kasie, wow, day one started a little rough but were doing good. Right . It was a little rough but everybody survived. I think Bernie Sanders folks, you were talking about this earlier, right, its a minority but very vocal and loud minority. Emotional and passionate. I think Bernie Sanders himself has been taken aback by how hes lost control. He said this all along. Everybody kept saying are you going to tell everybody to support you, back Hillary Clinton. He said, i dont know if they are going to follow me if they do. He didnt know how right he was. The last night, obviously, pretty remarkable night especially because michelle oba obama. The day was absolute chaos but she turned it around. Chris, you picked interesting winners an losers. There are interesting losers on the list, one of them being Elizabeth Warren. What . What . What is wrong with you. Youre going to get a run for that. Another cory booker. Cory basically yelled for an hour and a half. Ladies and gentlemen, Chris Cillizza. Thanks for setting me up. Do we have the mouse . Lets start with Elizabeth Warren. Elizabeth warren, i thought the idea of Elizabeth Warren and what shes done in her life really attracts a lot of people. Her as a public speaker this was true during the 2007 in scott brown. Shes less charismatic than people hope she will be. I thought it was fine. It was a fine speech. It wasnt a bad speech. I dont think she wowed anybody. Lines were delivered. She followed Michelle Obama. What are you going to do. What about cory booker . You know in mean girls the line, youre trying to make fetch happen, he was so trying to go for that big moment. National moment. Everybody that saw that felt the same thing. It felt so rehearsed. He was screaming at the television. It went on for too long. I actually did it two ways. I heard it live in the arena. I was going back and forth. It was firing up people inside. The crowd seemed happy. It was a great arena rally speech. I did see it on television and i looked away. This is one of those where how it projects on television and how it projects inside are just two different things. A lot more people watch tv. Thats all. Thats why it was so exciting for people inside the hall. Weve been talking about this for the past two weeks. Let the microphone do a little bit of the work for you. So much screaming at the Republican Convention, so much screaming at this convention. Willie, as you said before, when Michelle Obama got up, she knew how to use the mic. We said it all morning. I think she gave one of the greatest Convention Speeches weve seen ever. Not just in recent memory but of all time. It was incredibly moving. She talked about why america is great. The line she said about waking up every morning in a home built by slaves and wachk her two africanamerican daughters, smart, powerful women, playing with the dog on their lawn, that will be remembered forever. I think what she did, too, she quieted the room. All day Debbie Wasserman schultz speaking to the florida delegation, bernie talking to his supporters. He was getting booed, Bernie Sanders was getting booed by his own people for mentioning Hillary Clinton. She came in and was the first speaker that quieted everyone out of respect. She set a new goal. Another thing, it was an interesting way to go as character witness for Hillary Clinton she went role model, which is that you do hear that from parents about trump. The whole idea that the presidency and people in the white house are role models. I think that was a way that she got to stay above politics while being a character witness. Were going to get to the conventions raucous start but first lets listen to Michelle Obama last night. That is the story of this country. The story that has brought me to the stage tonight. The story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today i wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves. And i watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent black young women, playing with their dogs on the white house lawn. [ applause ] so dont let anyone ever tell you that this country isnt great, that somehow we need to make it great again, because this right now is the greatest country on earth. Yeah. Beautiful, passionate, optimistic. Something unfortunately in politics that a lot of our political leaders have forgotten over the past 20 years, how to talk about the problems that we are facing as a country and separate that from the worth of this nation, a country that has freed and fed more people than any country on the face of the earth in history. And yet you see it time and time again where a republican is in the white house and democrats talk about how its the end of our republic and its the end of the constitution. A democrat is in the white house, youve got republicans every day going to the house floor going, mr. Speaker, tonight freedom has died. Well, no, actually it hasnt. Was that your louis gomer. Everybody. Let me say also, it needs to be said at this particular moment in history, if anybody thinks that James Madison and james madisons constitution and alexanders and Ben Franklins and George Washingtons dream of a government that has a separation and powers, if they dont think that can wit stand four years of donald trump, they are fools. I will tell you we have a Golf Tournament in washington, d. C. , that will chew him up and spit him out in about two days if he thinks he can if he thinks he can steamroll over paul ryan or nancy pelosi or Mitch Mcconnell or Chuck Schumer or the constitution of the United States. So please stop with this donald trump is a fascist and hes going to take over the world. Its bs. Our constitution, formed right here in this city, that constitution has withstood about 19 depressions, a civil war, a great depression, world wars, it can withstand anybody that gets elected to the white house. The question is, the American People will decide if they want to watch that happen. By the way, thats not any sort of endorsement or nonendorsement. Im sick and tired i am sick and tired of people saying no matter who gets elected to the white house, our constitution is threatened. The party is in shambles. We have a constitution that was created right here and its going to withstand whatever it faces over the next 200 years. Got off to a rocky start, almost looked like a repeat of last week with the rain and booing and protests because yesterday, on sunday, actually, Debbie Wasserman schultz insisted she would gavel in and speak at the Democratic Convention. Yesterday she actually finally gave up those plans. Rampant disruptions began over breakfast, spilled into the streets and flooded the Convention Hall that night. It started just after 9 00 a. M. When the ousted dnc chairwoman Debbie Wasserman schultz attempted to speak. For some reason she thought that she could do this, to her delegations breakfast, and then she was shouted down by Bernie Sanders supporters. Its so wonderful to be here with my home state. All right, everybody, now, settle down. Everybody, settle down, please. We must under president Hillary Clinton make sure we must under president Hillary Clinton make sure that our economy works for everyone. Oh, my gosh. You guys cant even look at that. Shes so painfully unaware. Unaware. The problem is once under the circumstances up there, you have to keep going, but the problem is you should never have gotten up there. Thats what i was wondering about. She clearly thought this is a home game. If i can go anywhere at this convention its the delegation breakfast. You watch that, you dont have to be a democrat or republican, its really hard to watch. She should have seen what happened to ted cruz when he went to the texas delegation last week. They chewed him up there, too. They did. Look, at that point i get why she did it. Im with chris, have you to plow through. You cant walk off. You want to. I think she made this harder. Yes. She made this harder in the end. Look, you know what, maybe you fight. Whose to say its always for somebody else to say get out of your job. Its very hard if youre in it. Maybe the russian government is hacking and then like im the of you can see why you become defiant in that moment but i think the last days were harder she made it harder on her self. Debbie Wasserman Schultzs insistence gaveling in on the convention was scuttled. Meanwhile senator sanders attempted to calm his supporters in the early afternoon. Immediately right now we have got to defeat donald trump, and we have got to elect Hillary Clinton an tim kaine. Brothers and sisters, this is the real world that we live in. I think youre right what you said earlier. He was absolutely shocked to be booed on the stage. This is a guy used to get up before adoring crowds of people. For months. Those are people after he mentioned Hillary Clinton. Michelle obama provided the poetry for the evening. He had to come out in a room that had been booing all day and assure them its okay to vote for Hillary Clinton. The reality is hes on Hillary Clintons team. He had his moment, prime time in the sun. They were taken aback. You could see them, i was in the room when this was going on. They were huddling together, faces drawn, very serious. Thats why had that hot mic moment from jane sanders who acknowledged she had concerns. They were worried about this exploding into something bigger. He really started this movement and to a certain extent he cant control it. Staffers running out on the convention floor trying to tamp this down. A lot saying grassroots doesnt understand this level of politics. The move was underestimated at the start even by the dnc chair her self. Republicans who thought tea party was monaco they were going to be able to control, welsch republicans. Obviously ideals are very different but that sense you have this group that has power, out of control, not just establishment but also the leaders of the movement in theory. Its risky for them. The thing about sanders, hes rightly cast as an outsider but hes an outsider within standard political boundaries. He was the mayor. The perfect outsider. The member of congress. This is not a guy donald trump is more of an outsider. Bernie sanders sort of what youre seeing there is very traditional politics, which is i ran, i got what i think i could get out of this. I lost. Now lets get behind hillary. Many people for him are not part of the political establishment very broadly defined, which he is. They dont want the revolution is not over for them. They dont want to stop. This idea that, oh, everything will be fine. This is what we do. This is not what they do. They are not familiar with this process. I think thats why he starts losing control of it. I would just say, you know, when i was just thinking about eloquent words you talked about constitution. One thing thats not in the constitution is this idea that Political Parties are always going to survive. I have to tell you this. The takeaway after these two weeks are going to be just how vulnerable both parties are. Youre right. They are right now they have power in name only because they have valid access. Theres some rules to the game that make it easier. Which is why donald trump and Bernie Sanders ran in the party rather than outside because its the only way you could win the presidency. There were times both of them said that. What put you why did you well, you know, im not doing to run third party because of this. You do get the sense it will not take much for both parties to lose control. We live in a world now, wherever i am, whether its a razor phone or whatever i want to buy, i can buy it right here. I have all the choices i want. Amazon, good company. Its right there. But my point is, every sector of our society has been revolutionized. Media is like this, too. Used to be youd get what our networks were putting. Thats what you get. Now internet two seconds you can read whatever you want. If you want to buy a car, you dont drive to a parking lot and just get what they get there. You go to cars. Com. You can do this. If its food, you have every choice you want. You dont have to go to the restaurant thats right down the block. Yet in politics, it was the only sector of our civilization that is rooted in two institutions that were created, one, in the early 1800s and the second one in 1850. Theres been 150 year duopoly that jon meacham talks about. The walls are coming down. This is coming to an end. Its not going to be i have to vote for donald trump or Hillary Clinton four years from now. This is the end of that chapter. I think sanders and trump showed the way. Youll see a bunch of others come at this different four years from now. All part of why Michelle Obamas speech was so remarkable. It was the one moment last night that rose above all of that, i think, in many ways. While all of my sources and people i talked to every day for my job talking about bernie sanders and Debbie Wasserman schultz, the Text Messages i was getting from my family, from cousins, people who dont really tune in but watch on big nights like this, it was all about Michelle Obama. My inlaws who are some of the most conservative people i know. My fatherinlaw voted for alan keys over barack obama in 2004, he text after text, shes so good, can we have more of that. Once Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders spoke, i got texts of this is why i could never be a democrat. But that speech, to kasies point she did Something Else here. Most people think the country is already great and we strive to be greater. In a good political speech, as you pointed out earlier, you figure out how to talk about the problems as a way look at all the great progress weve made and were going to become greater and thats what she did so effectively. If youre a republican saying why are you guys kissing up to Michelle Obama so much. This is torn from Ronald Reagans playbook. Talk about how jimmy carter has ruined the economy. Talk about how jimmy carter has ruined foreign policy. Talk about how jimmy carter has made america look weak across the globe. But then talk about how great the American People are, how great history has been and how we are going to be better in the future. Again, americas strength. [ applause ] i will say its pretty darn remarkable what you said about what you all have said about Michelle Obamas speech last night. Everybody, even republicans, the last time that happened that i can recall, barack obama, 2004, my chief of staff in congress who had never voted for a democrat in his life said uhoh, i like this guy because it was the United States of america. This is, again, the huge takeaway is we have had politicians and weve had Media Outlets saying, hey, if we divide the country up, then we can get these small sections. Youve got somebody who has the guts to put their arms around everybody and unite america, just wait and see what happens. You can talk about how negative campaigning works and thats all true. At the end of the day people want a vision, positive optimistic vision to vote for. They dont just want to vote against. Thats what we forget a lot of the time. As good a night as last night was for Michelle Obama democrats still have ahead of them president clinton, Vice President biden, president obama, the list goes on and on. The nominee and then hillary. This time last week, who was on . There was chachi. Antonio sabato. Underwear model. Plagiarized speech. Highend underwear model. Im a low end underwear model. Fruit of the loom kind of guy. It was low rent. Im sorry. Comparatively. I knew this would happen. It was kind of fun to cover. It was an interesting thing happening last week in cleveland, but i knew day one of the dnc that they would bring it together. It was a raucous start but it ended up extremely unified, extremely optimistic and really beautiful. We have three days to go. Kasie hunt. Three days to go and you never know whats going to happen. Thats true. We dont know that its going to end strongly but it ended strongly last night. Day one. On tomorrows show Vice President joe biden joins us for an exclusive interview. Still to come right here on morning joe, Campaign Manager. Hillary hillary can i just say to the bernie or bust people, youre being ridiculous. Aint no stopping us now were on the move i approve this message. Donald trump i could stand in the middle of 5th avenue and shoot somebody and i wouldnt lose any voters, okay . And you can tell them to go f themselves you know, you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever. You gotta see this guy. Ahh, i dont know what i said, ahh. I dont remember. Hes going like i dont remember . Another antiwrinkle cream in no hurry to make anything happen. Neutrogena® rapid wrinkle repair works. In one week. With the. Fastest retinol formula. To visibly reduce wrinkles. Neutrogena®. Today you saw rnc where they were hacked. They dont know, is it china, russia . Im watching this clown who runs Hillary Clintons campaign and i heard my name mentioned. It was donald trump that stole hes got some deal. Russia stole it for my benefit. Lets figure this out. Russia stole it for my the reason is that putin likes me. I never met putin all fairness. But putin likes trump. Therefore he went in and he stole it and he wants trump to win. If the republican said that, they would say its a conspiracy theory. When the democrats said that, maybe trump stole everything from the dnc. Ay yi yi what a group we have. Ay yi yi yi yi. All together. Ay yi yi yi yi. You know, Abraham Lincoln said four score and seven years ago. Jfk said ask not what your country can do for you. Donald trump said ay yi yi yi yi. That is so bad. That was donald trump yesterday on the trail in North Carolina. He called you a lose r loser before we get to that youre like a child. You want to be entertained. Willie on the Upper West Side asked for this. See how hot it is. Everyone hot and soaking wet. Here is the difference. I wouldnt pay the hotel bill. I would say, were in a hotel, were in a ballroom, you know what, these are grown companies. Were in a ballroom, if were in a ballroom its not supposed to be so hot that everybody in the audience is using a fan. What they do is turn the air conditioning down because they save money. Then i would not pay that. Here we are in a ballroom and im like i feel like im in a sauna, thenrefuses to pay the bill. You know what, the smart people say trump is smart. The other people will say, isnt that terrible. Okay . I think the ballroom and people that own the hotel should be ashamed of themselves. Hillary clinton, will she be talking about central air this afternoon . Youre running against him by the way. Its hard to believe. You know what were going to be talking about at our convention is how Hillary Clinton has spent decades in her career fighting to make families better. Air conditioning. Imagine that. Instead of air conditioning were going to talk about the president fighting to make a real difference in peoples liv lives. Talk about a lot of alumni of the Obama Campaign trying to figure out how to run against that guy. Lets talk about another great moment in pop culture that involves philadelphia. Its where rockys manager or apolo creeds manager saying dont fight rocky, hes southpaw. Hes crazy. He went ahead and fought him anyway and we know what happened at the end. Doesnt it make it a lot harder running against donald trump, never knowing whats going to come out of his mouth. For instance, utah in play, thats good news. Pennsylvania in play, thats not such good news for democrats. How do you handle chaos. Donald trump is a bully. You just saw that there. Attacking anybody who tries to criticizes him. But people need to listen to what he says. Listen to what hes paying. He didnt pay the bill. He was upset he didnt pay the bill. Look at taj mahal. Didnt play contractors, pushed them out of business. Sued by thousands of low wage people who didnt get paid, companies who didnt get paid. This is someone who makes a quick buck, gets out, goes bankrupt and leaves people footing the bill. They need to Pay Attention to what he says, this erratic temperament that is a threat to our security and country. We cannot have that. Why is he still [ applause ] so why do so Many Americans support him . Why is he ahead in the latest poll by three points over Hillary Clinton. The other polls came out showing he got no bounce whatsoever. So close . All president ial elections are close. People out there are frustrated, looking for change. Donald trump making big promises that sound appealing. Like Everything Else in his business career, the promises are big, he doesnt deliver. You mentioned people are frustrated. There was frustration yesterday among Bernie Sanders supporters, in light of the leaked emails, Debbie Wasserman schultz, feeling like the system was rigged against bernie from the get go. How does Hillary Clinton help bring along Bernie Sanders supporters moving forward now. Was Sarah Silverman correct last night they are ridiculous, the ones who are bernie or bust. First of all, there was a big difference between the Republican Convention and our convention. Not only had senator sanders already endorsed secretary clinton a few weeks earlier in new hampshire, but he went and made a resounding endorsement of her. He urged everyone to get on board with the campaign. What about his platform, his belief, movement. The delegates past the platform by reclamation. We worked hard together as two campaigns. We know were stronger together. We built the most progressive platform in history. It was passed last night. Donald trump couldnt even get ted cruz to endorse him at his own convention. The difference here is the party us unifying to defeat trump and trump couldnt get it together at his own convention. We just saw trump indicate he wouldnt pay utility bill for the ballroom. You mentioned casino in new jersey. Writes the sustained pressure from donald trump from Democratic Party, your surrogates everyone in this room has a right to know about, his tax returns . Look, you know, its funny. I cant tell you why he wont release them. Maybe its because he doesnt have the money he says he does, maybe because he doesnt pay the taxes he should, but he should release them so we can find out. Do you think hes doing business in russia . He should release the taxes so we can find out. You introduced yesterday the idea this dnc hack russia was behind it. Fbi came out with reporting saying the lead suspect they are looking into that. Do you have evidence that it is russia, number one. And number two, that they were directed make how by the Trump Campaign, which the trump campaign has called outrageous. Do you see a link between the donald Trump Campaign and dnc leak. All i know is what experts are telling us, likely russian actors who went in and took those emails, because they are the ones that have the emails. The markings they got through russia. They are the ones that released them. I think the timing around the convention was not a coincidence. So this is what the experts are telling us. I find it troubling and puzzling that at the same time you see donald trump saying we should be friends with russia. You saw in the republican platform they removed aid for ukraine. Donald trump said last week he doesnt believe the United States should necessarily work with our nato allies to defend Eastern Europe from russian aggression. Youre implying a link there. Do you think the campaign this is what experts will have to fill in for us. I find the whole picture troubling. Every american should be trouble that any foreign nation should try to reach in and influence the outcough our election. We should be very we should be very troubled from a security standpoint that donald trump is saying we wont stand with our nato allies in new york if the russians your suspicion if it is the russians they are doing it on behalf of the trump am pain. We need to let the experts figure it out. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, do you have any plans to further upend whats going on at the dnc, the emails, whats next there . Are you going to leave that apparatus in place . They are reviewing the situation. You dont always know when the emails go out. People fired in your view . We need to let them make their recommendations. You think the dnc should be able to do this for themselves, investigating themselves . They are taking action. The difference between our convention and the Republican Convention is clear. You saw democrats coming together the speakers, best and brightest in our party, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, cory booker all getting behind hillary talking about how she will fight for middle class. Donald trump will be a major risk to security and economy. Do you think Bernie Sanders is doing everything he can to quiet this. Absolutely. Doing everything he can to elect Hillary Clinton. An article last night, poll numbers Hillary Clinton should be devastated about. Honest, numbers in the 30s, high 20s, low 30s for americans this trust her, mid to high 50s for americans that dont trust her. Her personal Approval Ratings are at an alltime low right now. Why do so Many Americans distrust Hillary Clinton . Why do so Many Americans have negative attitude toward Hillary Clinton . Were going to spend time talking about tonight at the convention is that hillary spent decades fighting for kids and family. She was the one who took on the fight for universal health care in the 90s. When she didnt succeed she got right back do most americans not like children . Is that the problem . Here is the problem. Hillary clinton is a workhorse not a show horse. Most americans dont understand, she has been fighting for decades. You know what, she has scars to show for it. She has scars to show for it. As maureen dowd said, arent a lot of those scars selfinflicted . You look how she used email. Doesnt feel trusted. Not just republicans. Whether you talk about the clinton money or you talk about the email, thats a story thats been driven primarily by the New York Times. This isnt a right wing conspiracy, this is the New York Times. Its been driven by house republicans who went out and said the purpose of these investigations, Hillary Clinton sitting there for 11 hours answering questions, was to lower her poll numbers. The New York Times has taken the lead, though, and you know this over the past year, since before the u. N. Speech. So you cant just say its a right wing conspiracy, can you . What im saying, Hillary Clinton has been fighting for children and families for decades. Shes fought republicans at every turn. Were going to talk about this toin. Theres a lot people dont know. Shes lishd so much in her life an shoes doing to place of business so much more. All right, robby mook. Coming up, we have new developments in hotelgate. Theres a statement from the hotel. Well have that for you. Hotel has a statement . Yes. I think more importantly, bad lipreading from ted cruz coming up as well. Temperatures in the mid to upper 90s, doors eepd for two hours to let hundreds of attendees enter and the ballroom filled to capacity to present a challenge. However, hotel staff did Everything Possible to keep guests comfortable and accommodated both inside and out. Willie, thank you. I would like to say this table over here is doing shots . What . He cant lift the hammer. Its okay though youre going to change the world. All right. Welcome back to morning joe. Were still at the plaza getting by. Joining us nbcs Chris Jansing also with us. Californias attorney general and democratic candidate for u. S. Senate Kamala Harris and New York Times reporter. Good to have you both with us. Good to have you here. Kamala. Here we go. Whats with the convention, crazy. The rest of the country. California is happy. Were excited. Last night. Are you sure . Im sure. Im going to speak with the california delegation after i leave. California voters, california delegates, we feel passion. We care about our country. Yes, we do. Thats a good thing. Thats a good thing. I think where we saw the day end up yesterday is also a good thing. Started rough. Started rough. Everyone needed to be heard, wanted to be heard and speak. Thats a good thing. Booing the prayer, nancy pelosi, elijah cummings, just a great guy. Thats a no. Wait, whats going on there . I think there were a number of people who felt very passionate about Bernie Sanders and still do. Good for them because he added an important voice to this process. They felt emotional about it and good for them. But i think everyone is starting to work through the process and realize that at this moment in time we have one person to take on, and thats on your side of the aisle, joe. We need to unify as a party. We are unifying as a party. You can see that happen. Michelle was incredible last night, incredible. Cory did an incredible job making the group and environment feel good and soulful, so were moving forward. So how surprised were leaders like nancy pelosi, elijah cummings, others who worked hard for the Democratic Party. Democ party. They were making sure bernie supporters actually had the platform. Bernie under thanked him. How shocked were they . I think they were pretty shocked. You know they will be crying and kind of doing these things. For you to be booing people that were really the icons of this party and trying to give them what they wanted. They were trying to say we do need to change the federal minimum wage. We do need to do these things. For them to say with all of this im going to boo him. Even though they booed a lot of people, for them to boo sanders last night and during the day, i wrote a story talk about the fact that he started this movement. He ignited this movement but you cant control how it burns anymore. I think thats really key here. Fire spread. Yes. How is he going to get this thing going . Yeah. Brush fire. He did his best but i dont me how you tell that percentage of people who railed against everything Hillary Clinton represents dealings with wall street, speeches to goldman sac sac sachs, how you conventiince the cast a vote for clinton. He said theres a Bigger Picture here. If you think about the Bigger Picture this is the clois before us. I think thats what he is hoping people will see. Yes. And they say there are stages of grief and some people are grieving more slowly than others you know, if sanders goes out there and gets booed, if you have people who are not listening to it but people who were really behind Bernie Sanders in a big way, do you just accept the fact that some people are going to grieve . I think we are in the midst of a process. Often the people who shout because they are fearing they are not being heard or seen. Through the course of last night i think we as a party spoke to and saw the folks that were shouting. As folks went to bed last night and wake up this morning they do feel they have been seen and heard. Do you think that lot of longtime supporters say we let them have their say or are they nervo nervous about it . I think they need to realize that part of the campaign is over. We are so proud to have hillary as our nominee. In fact hillary has seen and has talked about the issues that all of us in that arena care about including the bernie supporters. Pamela harris, thank you very much for being on. Thank you. We are back in philadelphia in just a moment. Is, is, isnt it time to let the real you shine through . Introducing Otezla Apremilast . Donald trump i could stand in the middle of 5th avenue im Hillary Clinton and i approve this message. And shoot somebody and i wouldnt lose any voters, okay . And you can tell them to go f themselves you know, you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever. You gotta see this guy. Ahh, i dont know what i said, ahh. I dont remember. Hes going like i dont remember this crowd is out of control. I know. I havent seen anything like it before, especially over there. Yes. The bernie can i just say to the bernie or bust people, youre being ridiculous. Good morning everyone. It is july 26th. We are live in philadelphia on the second day of the Democratic National convention. I dont even know where to begin. I long with joe, me and willie we have Mike Barnicle, mar mark halperin. They booed the prayer and everything early on. I saw tom brokaw talking about this earlier. Brokaw said early on that it reminded him of maybe 1972, the chaos early on that afternoon. Yes. Chuck todd said it was unlike anything he had ever seen. I was really out of control early on. Yes. It was back in the drinking days. It was very much like last night. I have to say two things about last night. There was a certain sense of add ration. They booed the prayer. They went way over the line at one point but last night will be remembered forever because of the first lady of the United States of america. Absolutely. She got great reviews. We sort of chuckled when we heard the Sarah Silverman sound bite. She had been a very strong bernie supporter all throughout this campaign. She is saying guys, i have turned the page. She is not bernie. Thats who we love, but you have to get over there. What was supposed to be a funny speech sort of took a serious turn. We have bernie turned hillary supporters. It is one of those moments that Sarah Silverman wouldnt have had that if paul simon had been ready come on stage. He wasnt ready come on stage. He was tuning up the final string i guess. It gave silverman this wonderful moment. You know, even watching so many peaches is frustrating. Everybody is screaming and yelling. They are acting like they dont have it in front of them. It is crazy. Suddenly you get somebody who has never been in elected office before, somebody that actually schools all of the politicians and says this is how youre supposed to deliver a moving speech at a convention. Michelle obama one of the best speeches i have seen at a convention. It fused the personal with the political for a purpose. She talked about her own life to try to make the point she wanted to make, that hillary should be the next president. Some of the others were solid. Elizabeth warren came after her. She was a very tough act to follow. Very tough act to follow. Bernie had a massive reception. He had a good night last night as well. Overall it was a decent time for democrats. It was clear it was going to go bad if things didnt turn. If this is the first night, tonight will be a better night and well get ready. Lets get through the day because it started out where the messageover par of party unity reopened by those leeked parake. Disruption spill into the streetsened flooded the Convention Hall. Just after 9 00 a. M. Debbie Wasserman Schultz attempted to speak to her delegations breakfast and was shouted down by Bernie Sanders supporters. It is so wonderful to be able to be here with my home state. All right now, everybody settle down please. We must under president Hillary Clinton make sure our economy works for everyone. She was insisting to gavel in the convention. Why did she insist on i think she learned after yesterday morning. We could have saved hear lot of trouble. Listen, just listen, she shouldnt have done that. She was insisting on gaveling in the convention. She is in an alternative political reality. It is unbelievable, mike. She goes through this thing at 9 00 and shes got to know. How many times you have, joe, and everybody in this room seen an example where someones ego stands in front of common sense . It was remarkable. Im not saying i mean i have known debbie for a long time. Im not saying that to be critical but debbie the public figure has been clueless about how people feel about her. And there have been people at the white house and Clinton Campaign who wanted her gone for a long time. It took this controversy to get her to go. You know, you think about the way that they started for them, to have the chair forced out, to have not only her being booed but Bernie Sanders being booed. By the end of the night thanks to Michelle Obama they were able to turn things around. If you take the first half of the day it would have been one of the worst. It was a little rocky at the start. You mentioned sanders getting booed. He attempted to quail his supporters in the early afternoon meeting. Despite the fact that our people were a minority on the Platform Writing Committee we came out of that committee with the most progressive platform ever written in the history of a Democratic Party. Immediately, right now, we have got to defeat donald trump. [ cheers and applause ] and we have got to elect Hillary Clinton and tim kaine. [ booing ] brothers and sisters, this is the real world that we live in. Thats just thats Bernie Sanders. Later sanders he was standing up there in front of people. I mean Bernie Sanders, to his credit, has been saying the same thing for 40 to 50 years. He lit the match that swept across the country. It is admirable in a sense that loyalty took sanders but now he has got to put this out. In november the people who followed Bernie Sanders will have a couple of choices. Either stay home and vote for donald trump or holding your nose, however you might feel about it he made a clear case for Hillary Clinton. Yes. The truth is all of the people shouting down Debbie Wasserman schultz and Bernie Sanders yesterday, polling shows Something Like between 80 and 90 say they will support Hillary Clinton. We are seeing the loudest voices here in philadelphia but most of the bernie supporters will go for hillary. Bernie sanders knowledged his disappointment. He hit on many of the topics over the last year except where he said Hillary Clinton must be the next president. This election is about which candidate understand the real problems facing this country and has offered real solutions. Not just fear mongering. We need leadership in this country which will improve the lives of working families, the children, the elderly, the sick and the poor. We need leadership which brings our people together and makes us stro stronger. By these measures any objective observe value will conclude based on her ideas and her leadership Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States. A new sur vie showed 90 of those consistent sanders supporters favor clinton over trump. It was an emotional night for sanders. Some were brought to tears. Bernie signs were even prind out in the hillary font in the show of sal darety. Here is what pence said about disappointed sanders supporters. To look at a ticket that doesnt give voice to what obviously millions of americans who align themselves with Bernie Sanders message in their party and in their ticket i think is frustrating to them. I understand that. Again, thats their party and they can cry if they want to, as the song writer says. Yeah. They aint going to be voting for trump and pence for the most part. It is hard to imagine any of them crying voting for trump or pence. I give him great credit for trying. Its not going to happen. At the end of the day if you look at hillarys message, trumps message, bernies message is closer to sanders. I feel confident they will come around to the clinton side. I dont know if you feel the same way. As willie said, not surprised they would be the most reluctant. I think the roll call will help a lot. A lot of them were saying it was geared towards the noelt it is not our nominee. A think a lot of them want the formality of saying if clinton is the nominee after tonight a lot of people even in that room will fall in love. Yeah, but by the end of the night do we have the Bernie Sanders speech or do we really have first lady speech to point to to say this was the moment that the Democratic Party came together as one to fight against donald trump . I think history will remember the first ladys street. Bernie sanders was important for that room, for the room. If you look at the ark ofl day you had sanders being booed. Sarah silvermans moment start today turn and when the first lady walked in the room got quiet. No doubt about it. I will never forget that winter morning as i watched our girls, just seven and ten years old pile into those black suvs with all of those big men with guns. I saw their little faces pressed up against the window. At that moment i realized our time in the white house would form the foundation for who they become and how well we managed this experience could truly make or break them. How we insist that the hateful language they hear from public figures on tv does not represent the true spirit of this country. How we explain when someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you dont stoop to their level. No. Our motto is when they go low we go high. That is the story of this country, the story that has brought me to this stage tonight, the story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation but kept striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today i wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves. And i watch my daughters, two beautiful intelligent, black young women, playing with their dogs on the white house lawn. So dont let anyone ever tell you that this country isnt great, that some how we need to make it great again because this right now is the greatest country on earth. There you go. You dont have to make America Great again. America is great. That is something that when Michelle Obama says that she connects not just with democrats but with liberals but with a lot of republicans and independents that have been say that far very long time. America is glareat. It is such a moving speech this network, the programming, this network will be playing parts of that speech again four years from now at the next republican convention. Yes. I was very moved by it. I thought, you know, we are thinking about putting that in the great speeches. The speech it reminds me of the most is Barack Obamas 2004 speech in boston, the United States of america speech. Theres not a red state america, blue state america, theres a United States of america. Extraordina extraordinary. Thats the message to my brothers and sisters wondering what you need to do, you need to follow that message because people are worried but they still are proud of their countries. Mike barnicle always says they have got this country. It is the greatest country in the world. You know, i thought this would happen. I really felt like the democrats know how to put on a convention but that speech, now think of day one i love chachi. We were all talking about this last week that the democrats were going to steam roll the republicans because they were going to have one star after another star after another star. Zeppelin in 71 followed by the Rolling Stones in 72 and they have the stars lined up one after another after another. Last week we had scott followed by an under wear model. Im serious. Followed by a plagiarized speech. Yeah and followed by a ufc fighter or whatever. We have more big stars coming on the stage. Compare the speeches of the second place finishers. You had ted cruz refusing to endorse the nominee. Last night you had sanders not stoking the flames of the people who were hesitant but putting them down. And think about Michelle Obama talking about living in a home that slaves built. Parallel that to how great this country is and what hurdles we can overcome to well, donald spens five mer minutes with me on the phone. They werent real. They werent personal. They didnt have a sense of history or section with this country. I know they were try to go personal chiezed donald vufrp but tell me what feels personal. You hit on the greatness of her speech. I have seen a lot of great speeches. Ted kennedy in 1980. Barack obama in 2004, clinton in 2012. I have never seen a speech give tennessee presentation from a nonpoll sigs really. From the heart. But the content of the peach fr speech from the beginning about watching her children go off to school. The speech was about her children, about us, more than it was about politics. I have to draw my attention to republicans who sit with clinched fists to say i dont know Michelle Obama would appreciate what im about to say but her optimism and her hope reminded me of ronald abegan who could talk about all of the problems and look right at the audience and say i believe americas greatest days truly do lie ahead. It is despite all of the challenges across the globe. We are americans. Look where we are. Look where we are going. Like Ronald Reagan in 1994 and Ronald Reagan in 1980, she spoke the truth. If you cant get behind that message as a republican or democrat then let me buy you a ticket to another country. We are the greatest country on the face of the earth. Im proud of where we are and where we have been. Some times you ask questions where people can only say amen. It will be thoohard to plajizgi this one. She favored the moment. She had a moment when fortunately speech took her in a direction. She reminded us all and the only way we could, as much as we want to make America Great and greater we are great as we are as a nation today. Her experience and her kids experience and what we have been able to accomplish. Still ahead on morning joe. We will repeal and replace disasterous obamacare. Last night chris took in the conventions chaos alongside the rncs fastpaced research team. Take a look. So are you looking for facts, details, controversy a little bit of everything. I think one of the things we have seen throughout this election cycle is how much Hillary Clinton and her Campaign Play fast. It is important to hold them accountable in realtime so voters know the truth. Rapid response use to be four or six hours and now its four or six minutes and maybe thats too slow. How many hours a day . 25. [ laughter ] they are getting as much information out at any given moment. So did you have a strategy session or do you have one today after Debbie Wasserman schultz stepped down . Absolutely. Tonight our message is about democratic disunity. It is driving all of the examples of signed in the audience, of booing. My daughters and all of our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States. Cant say anything bad about Michelle Obama can you . Her Approval Ratings are too high. We can focus on a lot of other folks. And leave her alone . Of course. Is this the ring where sill vester stallone worked out . Yes. It is definitely ironic. Youre going to leave her alone . Of course. They are right above the stallone boxing gym and there is punching above your weight and then theres like ali against peewee herman. They also have the videos of all of the times people booed. They did find thing to respond to that appeal to get them riled up. And that wasnt the trump team. Hillary clintons team had her Rapid Response team going in cleveland but that was the rnc. This was a pretty visual example of infrastructure. I mean you would expect the rnc. They have done a good job on all of that. They have really had to step in and fill the void. And we have Claire Mccaskill in the house. Wow. Its a little loud here. Just like breakfast at my house every morning. Yeah. So the convention off to the good start . What do you say to Bernie Sanders supporters . I couldnt figure out why there was so much booing. They have passionately gotten involved in politics for first time. They are the most enthusiastic because they worked hard to become a delegate. Who would think they would come to philadelphia after this and sit on their hands and go yeah, hillary. Of course they will speak out. And you wouldnt expect them to boo the prayer or nancy pelosi or a rock star. I think they have seeing it kind of mile itic. There is an institution and theres them. We are trying to make sure they understand there is an incredibly important part. How do you do that . I dont think just because Michelle Obama is beyond amazing and sanders did everything i think it will take a few days for them to and there will be a few outliars. Your folks will find somebody that will say ill never vote for her. 90 are already voting for Hillary Clinton. We are in a readily good place in our party. What was nice about last night is it wasnt just a trash trump night. There are all kinds of uplifting messages and everyone said her name over and over gep. A lot of republicans never mentioned the world donald trump. No. We know that. Yeah. It was very negative. And the question was were the democrats going to return . Im glad to see that didnt happen. There was a healthy amount of trump take down. We have heard the case against trump today. We heard kate is for Hillary Clinton. If he is as bad as he says she is why is this race so close not just nationally but including the one we are sitting in. You pay a heavy price for being in the cross hairs of the opposition for decades and decades. Every scar that Hillary Clinton wears she got while she was in Public Service. Im not saying mistakes havent been made and im not saying there arent legitimate criticisms about how certainly things have been handled but i will say this, that what we are trying to do this week is make sure people see beyond the 32rd sound bites put out by the republican attack team thch. This is a woman who could have cashed out. They did cash out. It is worth 200 million. She chose Public Service time and time again. She could have stayed. And it could have been much easier if she had just stayed out. Of course. Of course. That is the point we want to make is this passion she has for children, this passion she has for families has been a consistent thing far long time. Are you aware how well he is doing . I cant believe it. If anybody watched the press conference the day after he clinched nomination for president of the greatest country on earth and one of the lines, think about this if i would say this. He said i dont understand why the National Inquirer hasnt gotten nobody made a big deal about him saying that. Does she stay with her game or does she have to look now . After that convention that so many people thought was a disaster for the republicans, does she really have to do a reboot of some kind . She will be who she is which is warm, engaging and relatable as you can possibly imagine. It is somebody that believes she has had to be strong and tough and unrelenting. To the extent that she can open up we all would love that but she has to be who she is. On her worst day she is infinitely better than the crazy trump town. Yeah. Im with you. Im with you. What are some of the main challenges that some Insurance Companies start to pull away from this program . We need additional work making sure the risk adjustment is right. Drug costs are not going away. It will probably raise their head in the fall election, what to do about it. So i think theres that. But i agree. It is a governing issue. Whatever is in the white house will have to keep pressure, stay down but also improve the quality too. I wonder why its not though. When you think about it the Program Needs a lot of work. Tell me what president , what thought this could get accomplished . We dont know how it ends. It is still on a shakedown. It is constitutionalizeinsti. Health care is changing right now. It use to be fees for services but we are moving from quantity. Lets get them in and out to quality and we are also talking more to value and how do you get more value without spending trillions and trillions of dollars. Lets take a step back and look at the Affordable Care act. 20 million more are insured. About 20 million more we have to insure. We are moving towards a valuebased system. We pay for quality and outcomes. You need to have an exchange of data and use that data to have everything from cost to outcomes on every procedure. And i can say this as a small government conservative, we have to have transparency on cost. We cant have people continuing to go in, getting procedures, thinking it is for free and then finding out that the end result bankrupts the Health Care System and bankrupts america. Two points, this is an area of bipartisan agreement. I think we will get progress on that. At 18 it will always be a work in progress. We are l always be trying to fix it and get quality up and make sure earn gets the right care. It doesnt end. It has done a great job in terms of frame work. They are talking about it. The Health Care Doctors are thinking about it in new terms. We have had some moderation. It has been a pretty good success. So five years in, which area needs to be tuned up . The patient end or doctor end . I think its both. Lets talk about the patient end for a second. It is on the player side and incoupion the government side in a way that a consumer can understand it and maintain their Health Whether it is a general practitioner or some specialty. It is about getting information that helps them take control of their own side. It is about how we contract, how we interact with each other. It has to be based on value. It has to be transparency around outcomes on every procedure. All right. Should we drink to that . As a philly guy how about this philly welcome . I know. Thank you very much. Great to have you you.
