Police say 20 people were arrested and reported no major injuries in which was the first violence since the chicago rally. This footage of a trump supporter talking to medical personnel. Reporters witnessed a confrontation there. Mark halperin, the violence was outside the rally. Going to be hard for the media to spin this one as Donald Trumps problem. That was something they loved to talk about a week ago. I dare say that that degree of violence only helps a candidate that they are trying to hurt. Well, and it also lays to bear what could be months of a huge debate in this country over donald trump and his legitimacy and his appeal. California has never seen what were about to see. Its going to be a lot of political activity in this state. A state that size, there are a lot of people who do a lot of things. Put that image up with the guy in the bandages. This is what they are trying to do to us. This is a trump supporter and they are trying to keep us down. Youre right, donnie. All of this, the rage, the anger, the violence outside the rally, the stomping on police cars, all of that plays right into his hands. Everything thats happening is playing into his hands. Its everything thats done now, even if its just political water, plays into his hands. They are taking our country away from us. So suggesting theres going to be a soft turn towards the general election towards positions that might actually help donald trump with his pan. Ices in the general election. Were not seeing it. So what hes doing in california is not pivoting to the general election, but he realizes the establishment and people in washington are turning toward donald trump now. Theres no denying it. Two more endorse mements in congress. Two heads of veterans affairs. These are serious people. Bob corker. Bob corker f theres one thing that indicated a massive change of opinion inside washington it was bob corker, who is not a tea party guy. Hes been seen as one of the more moderate as far as working across the aisle Republican Leaders there. Yeah, when he came out the other day about that Foreign Policy speech that there were some interesting contours to it. But hes get iting support from people that are to be taken seriously. The corker thing was interesting coming basically a few hours after trumps Foreign Policy speech. It gave it a sign of significance, of seriousness, an endorsement. I would say it wasnt the most full throated endorsement, but corker is a person of substance. You always have to do that, sam. Let me pick up with the finger things. Dont talk about texture. The party is resigning itself to him being the nominee. And two, trumps playing what i would say the playbook that nixon did. He references the majority all the time. He goes out there and says theres lawlessness. I need to bring law and order to you. The country is being taken away. But there are factual problems here. Border crossings that he referenced in that speech. They are at an alltime low. Crime in america, its not like the 70s. Were not witnessing an epidemic of crime in American Cities like we were back then. Everything hes done is right brain. I want to pick up on his speech. But facts do matter. Theres a lot of talk about the substance. Theres a cautionary tale for him. That was the first time e we saw him reading. It was different. The thing that makes him work, and i do a lot of things terribly. One thing i do well is a lot of public speeches. I like by point. I cant read off a prompter. His connection with the audience because hes not reading is so real and so present. I found a very different in him trying to be president ial and read a very different donald trump. And hes got to balance. You have to read stuff. And i for the first time when he speaks i lean in. During that speech, i was leaning back. Thats something hes going to have to juggle as he gets deeper into policy and more speeches because he was not being trump. He wasnt im not talking about substance. I picked that up in the Foreign Policy speech. Im sorry, the other day. The Foreign Policy speech i u pick ued it up there. The thing that everybody learned from that speech or should have learned if youre inside the Trump Organization is he can do that if he has big cheering crowds like that. George w. Bush in a crowd or oneonone, greatest, funniest, most likable guy. Get him in the east room in a formal press conference and its painful. So you play to the strengths. So explain something to me. Im sure all trumps guys understand hes going to get the 1237, right . They also understand he cant win the general election without 35 of hispanics voting for him. This seems awfully late in the calendar to be doing things that made sense in january. Can he win . There are not, i have been saying all along and i may be wrong, but there are not enough white voters in america for donald trump to win while get ing routed by minorities. Theres a lot in that question. First of all, trump is always going to say what he believes on issues luk immigration. What he said last night he believes. And he believes he can rally a lot of people. He still needs to do well in the california primary to go over. For the republican electorate, thats a strong message. If you take what trump has said, trump has been for a position on immigration, which he can start to emphasize, that is close to amnesty. I think he will pivot on immigration to talk about some of the things he mentioned about letting people stay here if they are good people. Trump will lose the hispanic vote if hes the nominee. You talk about percentage to get. He can lose california massively. Can he target hispanics in north carolina, illinois, new jersey, i think there are other issues he can talk about to win. And he can get more of the white vote than romney did. The math here is not as cut and dry as hes not going to do well with the hispanic vote and cant win. State by state and on issues besides immigration. Do you think he will do better or worse . Romney lost 71 . I think the national number, if they are able to build a targeting operation, hispanics in california worse as of today. Im not sure thats going to be the case longterm. Thats not what its about. Hes never going to win california any way. Im talking about the general election. Can he not win it, but can he make clinton play defense there. One of the dynamics in this warfare that we have seen in the conflict is trump can probably put more can i answer that question on april 28th . He cant make Hillary Clinton play defense. But im curious what you think about the trump train because as someone who has been a part of the party of lincoln and reagan and eisenhower and coolidge to see someone like donald trump come along and essentially take it over is something that has to be Pretty Amazing in your lifetime. And republicans cant just do what what we read about on whether its free trade, lower taxes. Name a tax cut thats helped somebody making 50,000. It says a lot about the Republican Party that they talk more about cutting tacks in an 80s fashion. And thats the exact point. Why havent republicans come up with any sort of payroll tax cut over the past 30 years. Mitt romneys idea for reviving the economy, and a lot of republicans fear, you need to cut Corporate Tax rates. I understand that. You understand that. But that doesnt do a whole hell of a lot for somebody making 50,000 in central california. That just does not appeal to you. I completely hear you on that. I still worry as a matter of a coalition, a way that youre creating a toxic cancer. The problem is they could have done that without a wall. If marco rubio, for instance, had stayed in the senate more than two weeks and developed more of an Economic Policy that played to the trump voters and instead wasnt just wrap ped up in republicans were telling him to do or wall street republicans were telling him to do, rubio would be a perfect vehicle. What you have to do is find somebody like reagan and they could be up there that rubio could win, but also essentially he offered bush 2. 0, which was rejected. Now you have ted cruz offering true conservatism. Whats interesting too is that conservatives, people who support donald trump are saying to ted cruz, who is saying donald trump is not a true conservative. We dont really care at this point. We dont care. We care he can get us jobs. We care that hes strong. Although on taxes, its more of a traditional tax plan than rubios was. Economics is being underdiscussed as a big issue in this potential trump clinton general election. Trump, lets see what kind of policies he brings forward. Too many votes. You go to all of trumps rallies, talking about the wall, everybody is looking for the bright shiny objects like the wall and the muslim ban. You go to the rallies and its economics. These are people struggling. Its something the article brought up because he talked about how this is one component of the Republican Party thats always been there and might be building a fifth column, so to speak. But there has to be balance. There has to be balance, and when i worked on the Clinton Campaign there was one sign is and it was the economy is stupid. I was kind of like the canopies. I think the concern i have about trump is less about his policies than about the practical. The lesson we have taken away from the delegate fight is that this is a campaign that doesnt build a lot of the traditional operations we expect from a campaign. That could have significant negative effect this is time around for the Republican Party. Lets read from our mustread oped that mika has faxed in. With 10 million vote, trump is on track to become the biggest primary votegetter in gop history. This is the kind of momentum that tends to grow. Smart niss have been translating all these victories into delegate counts. But as i look at where we are, get your mind off 1237. Get your mind on the win that Donald Trumps back. After all the embarrassments, his support is building. The conservative writers and thinkingers who for nine months warned that trump is not a conservative, to consider the idea that a large portion of the Republican Base no longer sees itself as conservative. At least as that term has been defined the past 15 years by washington writers and thinkers. Its great. Its the truth. The voters, the Republican Voters, the Republican Base have not only ignored all these washington conservative thinkers and writers, they have run over them. Just obliterated any premise that they determine who wins the primaries. The party has not done serious soul searching. Part of it is the issues. Not cutting entitlements. Asserting tax cuts. Belief that america does need to have a different trade policy. The last week more Republican Voters still in the race. Its interesting the list that mark pointed out there. It also shows why its so critical that republicans mainstream republicans figure out why trump is succeeding because the entitlements are going to bankrupt us. And by the way, its simple. Were going to be bankrupt as a nation if it we dont take u that head on. But theres no nobody out there that can give a strong alternative to donald trump ying, dont touch Social Security or medicare. The real problem that the party has to face is its gone through a series of elections now without working through what they learned from the bush years, what they have learned from the 90s. Theres never been that process that brought them to in new point to say this is going to teach us about where we ought to go. The failure of the Rubio Campaign is a perfect example of that. The success of trump is an example of that. There has to be soul searching, but also just a recognition. Our priority needs to have policy priorities that line up with our base. Otherwise it can be taken over. How ironic that marco rubio ran the Republican Campaign of the past. If theres ever been a campaign that typified the past of a party, it was his. And donald trump who would have done great in the 1990s. But on paper he was the per spect vessel. Young guy, latino, he was answering all the questions that were supposed to be answered after 2012. If you want to be president of the United States, not only do you as a republican have to get a third of the hispanic vote, you also have to get those white working class voters. Because if you dont get them coming out the way trump is, youre not going to win anymore. Its over. The Republican Party of the 1990s is over. Its dead. Reach out to pop lists and hispanics and get more than 6 of the black vote, just for the hell of it. Please, its ridiculous. You have to figure out how to do all that. Good to see you. Ronald reagan says he wants senator richard schwieker of pennsylvania. Hes from a populous industrial eastern state. Reagan is from california. He says he will take the job and said today basically this is a coalition. Reagan said earlier this month i dont believe in the old tradition of picking someone at the opposite end of the political spectrum because he can get votes you cant get yourself. Reagan has done just that. Tom brokaw was there when the announcement was made. Reagans announcement came after a series of weekend interviews in which he said he had not decided on a running mate. Since i feel the delegates have a right to know in advance of the convention who the nominee would be, i am departing from tradition and announcing my selection. If they went to the pennsylvania senator they could dwinish the concern of the country that reagan was too conservative, that he was from california, that he didnt play to the rest of the country. It was a disaster. It didnt work at all. Four years later, briefly still in charge, but when reagan lost iowa he was gone. They got to new hampshire. Reagan won there and became the president of the United States and now has half the airports in america named after him. Speaking of california, chaos erupted outside of Donald Trumps First Campaign rally in the state. Antitrump demonstrators south of los angeles grew from blocking traffic to protesters aggressively swarming cars and at one point they busted a Police Cruisers windows with one man stomping on it. Protesters force the police to shut down streets. Other witnesses saw people jumping on street signs and throwing bricks. There was the smell of burnt rubber filling the air as a car spun in the middle of an intersection doing donuts. 20 people were arrested but reported no major injuries in what was the worst violence since the fight inside the chicago rally in march. This time the fights broke out between opponents and supporters outside and a local affiliate has the footage of a trump supporter who was bandaged and talking to medical personnel after reporters witnessed the confrontation. And tom, california has been a terrible idea. Protesters are only making trump spltrum trump solidifying his position. They look at all that and say thats where america is going and i dont want to be a part of it. There are ways to protest and not to protest. California is going to be the big avocado coming up this spring. But the fact of the matter is that if youre going to get trump they are going to have to find new ways of going after him. Got to stop playing into his hand. I was talking about 1968. My parents, democrats, fdr democrat, deep south, voted for democrats their entire life. That changed in 1968 in large part because of what they saw in the democratic convention. By the time 72 in miami came around, they were like this isnt my party anymore. The very people that feel like the country is slipping out of their hands see that and tom is right. It plays into trumps hands. Cleveland is going to be an extraordinary convention. Youre going to see a scale of protests because trump inspires big crowds for him and against him. Its going to be difficult to handle. The same kind of miscalculations could occur and could help trump. The rage on both sides works for him. The supporters and more fervent the antagonists are. Youre going to seat guy in the bandages up on stage next to trump saying this is what they want to do. This is you, america. They are trying to take our country away from you. That was the lesson of the chicago rally. A lot of people on tv were saying this is a dark day for the trump campaign. Look what its inspired. Supporters say no, these people tried to silence him. This works in it his favor. I would say to the media covering this going forward. Imagine if Trump Supporters roughed up a clinton rally. Imagine how the coverage would be. The pac between cruz and kasich to stay out of each others way has hit another snag. Early in the week kasich failed to tell supporters not to vote for him in indiana and cruz has rejected the idea of an alliance. I recognize that the media is all eager to talk about an alliance. There is no alliance. John kasich made the decision in his own interest to withdraw from indiana. Let me say to folks at home who may have been considering supporting john kasich. Cayce sick a good and honorable man. But he has no path to winning and john kasich has pulled out. Hes withdrawn from the state of indiana. I got up yesterday and i started thinking about my campaign. Started thinking about my effort. I thought about should i keep going. Should i carry on . What is this all about . And i thought deeply about it. So i have decided to keep going. There are going to be people who are going to criticize u me for that. Its not always an size road. Im going to do my best. Were at the edge of a cliff staring downward. And it is the common sense and good judgment of the Hoosier State that is the one thing that stands between us and plunging over the cliff. Can indiana be the nail in the coffin for ted cruz . Last tuesday was the nail in the coffin. Were we dreaming earlier this month when an alliance was announced . Did that not happen . Are they pretending it didnt happen . It was a limited agreement. It only applied to three states. Neither of them had had anything to say about it then that made it seem anything less than desperate. As they have gone on this week, i described the deal the way it was executed as amateur. Both campaigns complained to me about that. Im now thinking, immature was too nice. There was a deal. Now they are saying theres no deal. You are talking about some deal. First of all, the deal, the conclusion helps trump. And then the weakness of them backing away from a deal that they u set up, we say it again. This is the theme of the day. The anesthetic theme of the wee. Everybody is playing into trumps hands. They remind me when i was a freshman at the university of iowa when finals were coming up. I thought if i ace every one of them i can get to a 2. 0. But its going to take that for me to get to a 2. 0. Acing every final is not going to happen. These are hail marys. Its getting thinner and thinner for them to stop him. Down to a couple states at this point. I have been thinking, i think i said it here before. Turn the block back about ten months or even a year. All the pundits in washington are now over their furn furnace burying their columns about him not getting elected. Hes defied all the conventional wisdom because hes playing in a new reality frankly. What hes doing is reaching out to the country that feels like they are no longer a part of american political systems. Hes going to be their advocate. And the more they protest, the better he does. You cant say Hoosier State if you dont know a basketball hoop. Lets go to casey hunt right now. Shes out on the campaign trail. Actually shes in d. C. You have to win votes in d. C. As well. The deal that was, the deal that wasnt and where we go from here. I was sort of laughing to myself because this deal happened last month it feels like it was that long ago. It was quite recently. It fell apart in the meantime. I was in indiana the last couple days. And it was pretty clear that donald trump is really in a position where its his race to lose in indiana. There was some excitement around cruz announcing Carly Fiorina initially, but it fell flat afterward. It felt kind of familiar to the indiana sources i was talking to. There were some polling circulating in republican circumstanles early in the week was showing trump kind of on the rise, which is what matters the most in this polling. That was before he won those five statings. That was before ted cruz called it a basketball ring. We joke about it, but hoosiers take their basketball pretty seriously. I think it did make a difference. But to be clear, on monday, sunday, whenever this was, there was an alliance, right . There was a a deal announced between the campaigns, which they are denying now existed. That happened, both campaigns put out statements. I talked to john kasich the day after it was announced. I have to say he didnt really seem on board with it at the time. And ted cruz seemed to be the one who was more willing to embrace this, if you will. I think it sort of became clear if anything it backfired. And there were two groups of kasich voters if you talk to people backing kasich in indiana. They will say, we had a group of people who their main goal is to stop trump, they look around and say im disappointed, but fine, ill do what youre telling me to do. Theres another group kasichs voters are not ted cruzs voters. They are looking at cruz and saying theres no way to get on board with this guy. Its the same reason Lindsey Graham had trouble getting on board with cruz. He came around, but youre seeing a group of people that isnt willing to do that. Its a mistake that cruz and kasich and others have made. The consumer is not an idiot. Its your wife. They assume stupidity on the part of the electorate. We can do this alliance. We can put Carly Fiorina and say its not over. If we win indiana, everything changes. People are not stupid. They are just not. You know this better than anybody else. In 2016 the calculation that you see every time cruz gets on stage and starts talking in this cadence. Marco rubio, every time he spoke, i heard the echoes of a thousand focus groups. Donald trump goes out there and he wings it. We criticize him for winging it too much. He tweets. He gets earned media. He gets earned media off his tweets. Earned media matters. 30second prepackaged tv ads, they just dont connect. They are never going to decide an election again. One guy winning votes from voters and two career politicians making a deal. One thing, too, i think we have talked a little bit about the general election. Republicans have been wrestling with is donald trump the guy to win the general election. Republicans in indiana i was talking to people involved in building these delegate slates up. They got tons of applications from democrats in indiana to be delegates to the Republican National convention. And a couple things there. First, it has republicans worried their down ballot races are going on to hurt because its democrats showing up. But it also tells you there are a lot of new different voters out there in places like indiana which we typically think of as one of the redder states willing to vote for donald trump. One of the things we have heard is people who work with ted cruz and know him dont particularly like cruz. Former House Speaker john boehner gave serious voice to that during a visit to california this week. Boehner said while he would vote for donald trump in a general election, theres no way he will ever vote for cruz and offered this description of senator ted cruz. Lucifer in the flesh. In washington i have a z many Democrat Friends as i have republican friends so i get along with erbe. But i have never worked with a more miserable person in my life. Over my dead body will he be president. How long has he been waiting to say that . Were watching all of that, this is also the week in which donald trump liken Hillary Clinton to a nonperson. 5 if she were not a woman. Shes just playing the woman card. That should have been a devastating statement on his part in terms of how it plays out. But because of all the other stuff thats going on, its mostly about how kasich and cruz cant get their act together. Its about boehner commenting on cruz. He can make a big faux paw. Id like to see where we go from here. Sam stein, the question is, though, these quotes are forever. It gets buried in the republican primary, but ive been saying that for about a month. The same things that help donald trump in a republican primary right now in the short game u could end up hurting him badly in the long run had unless he figures out how to make that turn. The New York Times is reporting this morning that aids to trump say he will go after bill clintons indiscretions with Monica Lewinsky in the general election. Trump has some significant voter hurdles here going after clinton for the socalled woman card. A cbs poll has him losing white women support to clinton. Republicans dont lose the white women vote. Not since 1996. Thats a huge problem for donald trump. One last point on lucifer or the comments. These are interchangeable. John boehner, his initial candidate was john kasich. Thats the person he endorsed. John boehner feels that way about ted cruz. That lets you know how unlikely it was going to be that people who liked kasich would turn around and cast a vote for ted cruz in indiana. They are just totally u different camps within the Republican Party. That alliance was basically doomed for failure from the start. And youre right about him not understanding the basics of basketball. Whether youre in indiana or kentucky, that makes people think they are not connected to him u. Tim russert had that great line about him going up and asking about a candidate, what do you think about that guy . The guy said, doesnt wear socks. There was a cultural disconnect. I think it was iowa. But cruz, it seems could not have misplayed the first three days in his make or break state any worse than he has. I think they went into this they were arguing, we knew we were going to lose these five states. We knew this was going to be really bad. I think they underestimated the impact of that momentum. I think youre right, my sense on the ground was not that ted cruz was there having three great days, but donald trump followed it up by hitting the campaign trail with bobby knight. Tom, thats check mate. Bobby knight is check mate. At least a winning coach. Bobby knight is closest thing in indiana. Even the people not happy about his behavior, you go to indiana and the hoosiers talk about bobby knight. Thats the real deal. That was important for them. Hes getting more and more of those people coming to his side who have an attachment to the voters that he wants to get to where he is. Everyone does have to remember, however, that were in that phase of these campaigns where they are trying to get the nomination. So they are playing to that select group of people that will get them the nomination. The numbers are still quite devastating for trump when you look at the wider arena about people who dont want to be president. But we have a long ways to go. Those can be changed as well. Got to get the nomination and he seems to be on track to do that. Ohio in the general election, hes going to do a seance and bring become woody haste. Yesterday when we were talking about great indiana figures and said bobby knight or larry bird. The great notre dame coach called our control room and said dont forget about digger. Because to them there was something stronger about the engine. We dont want to drive a womans car. So theres this weird reverse thing that has appealed to a lot of women. Were talking this time on wednesday morning. What story are we telling . Has donald trump won . Has he won big and what does it mean for the rest of the race . I think if indiana is going to go the way i think its going to end up going, were going to be talking about clinton versus trump. What can trump do to fix his issues with women. On one hand, i give cruz credit. They are throwing everything at the wall. Lets try an alliance. That didnt work. Lets try a running mate. Lets see. Maybe they have Something Else they can pull out of their hat this weekend. They are putting it all out there. Which means if they dont win indiana, its over. They have no plan b after indiana if they lose it. A the this point, well see what the polling shows this weekend. I cant imagine that its cruz that has momentum and not trump. Its interesting. Trump declared himself the presumptive nominee. People are assuming this goes to june. If trump gets 50 in indiana, given kasichs remarks about deciding to continue on, i think there will be calls for cruz and kasich to get out and let trump start to consolidate. I wouldnt be surprised if the trump people try to find someone else on the party of an Authority Figure to send the signal. This thing is over and these guys should get out. It would be a huge advantage to trump. Take over the Convention Planning. Reach out to fundraisers and think more about how to win a general election rather than another more than a month of trying to jockey. Remember mccain in 2008. He did not have a majority of delegates and the head of the Republican Party invited him for a meeting for a photo op. That sent a signal to huckabee to get out. What could they say next wednesday morning if they lose indiana . Whats the case . Theres no case. Lets turn to the democrats with the path to the nomination narrowing, Bernie Sanders is turning a critical eye to the Democratic Party. At a rally yesterday, sanders focused less on his challenger and more on that party. The problem were having now is not in my view, that the republicans are winning elections. The problems is that the democrats are losing elections. The Democratic Party up to now has not been clear about which side u they are on on the major issues facing this country. The Democratic Party has to reach a fundamental conclusion. Are we on the side of work iing people or big money interests . Meanwhile, the Washington Post reports that out of all the candidates who run for president this year, Bernie Sanders has spent the most money on his campaign. According to the post, but the end of march, the senator spent 166 million. The same time we have also learned the Clinton Campaign is not spending any money at all on ads in the upcoming primary states. It appears to be the First Time Since august of last year that Clinton Campaign has been dark over the air waves. Hillary clinton has turned to the general election. She has. They are not using the phrase presumptivive nominee. They are trying to be a little bit careful here not to look like they are being totally overconfident, but as a campaign, they are in Convention Planning mode right now is my understanding. They have a a team looking at that. So they are in the mode that mark was describing trump would like to be in. Thats what the Clinton Campaign is doing now. I tell you, sanders is sounding like a bitter guy. I cant win the Democratic Party nomination, so let me tell you everything thats wrong with the Democratic Party. Theres a little sour grapes there. But sanders, why didnt he endorse more house candidates, Senate Candidates . Youre going to reform the party, theres a lot of progressive candidates wondering why he didnt help them when he could have and shown that hes got juice in the party beyond himself. Sam stein wharks do you think . Chuck is completely right. One of the problems that sanders had was he couldnt win over the actual establishment of the Democratic Party. The same thing about for our podcast, which is you have to show youre not just that you can lead a party. And he never actually did that. Sanders is going to stay in the race. Hes going to campaign through california and his people tell me that the reason they are doing is they feel like anyone who is a big supporter of him and his causes deserves the right to vote for them. Thats fine. The second thing, which was interesting, they view it as good for the Democratic Party at large that he stays through the race. Primary uly because he will get more people who have been on the sidelines to register to vote. They think that will have an effect in november when you have a general election, if hes the nominee or clinton is the nominee. Im not telling my voters to go vote for Hillary Clinton. Thats up to her to convince them. Hes not hand iing this thing t her. No, but if it he wants to be the leader of this movement and he wants to make it a movement, actually, it is incumbent upon him to show he can push them in a certain direction. I mean, i u get what hes saying that Hillary Clinton needs to reach o out, but i think it is incumbent if it he wants to show theres anything to the Sanders Movement post candidacy to move voters themselves. At that point, it would have been a lot simpler. The issue between the kurds and terks has made that real estate much more complicated. U be theres still 8 million displaced syrians that could leave. Why cant we make a safe zone there . This is not only a crisis in syria. Its not only a regional crisis, its now a crisis for europe. Its a crisis across the globe. Why cant we create a safe zone for these refugees to return home . There wasnt the commitment to use the military assets to protect the humanitarian mission. But now were using the assets to battle.
