Its a tale as old as time. Three pigs three houses. Straw, sticks bricks. But only one that i really want to get in to the white brick house, the strongest of them all. These others are just in my way, but not for long because in this town you have to know which way the wind is blowing. And right now, its about to get very windy. I cannot believe that. Thats the house of cards. Yes, it is. Muppet style. I like it. Welcome to morning joe. Mike barnicle is here along with willie, joe, and me. Good morning. Hi, willie. How are you . Pretty well. We have a huge show today. Gosh ann curry is going to be on Elizabeth Warren is going to be on. Your president ial candidate. Are you going to beg her to run or throw money at her . Ill try to keep myself together. You can have a fundraiser over there with all of your rich continental friends. I think shes good. So you see this va story. Yeah. Yeah. Why dont we starter there actually because i want to take a look at the video again. Veterans Affairs SecretaryRobert Mcdonald has been forced to admit he was not in the special forces as he once claimed. The Huffington Post reports mcdonald actually served in the army with the 82nd airborne after graduating from west point but it was this january when he made a comment to a homeless man caught by cbs that prompted the
report. Last night. Even the vas new secretary Robert Mcdonald was out counting. Are you a va veteran . Yes. Really . Army navy, air force . Army. What unit . Special forces. Special forces. What years . I was in special forces. According to the Huffington Post, mcdonald told him, quote, i have no excuse. I was not in the special forces. I reabouted spontaneously and i reacted wrongly with no intent in any way to describe my record any different than it is. The white house says it has accepted mcdonalds explanation. Lets bring in the Pulitzer Prize winning reporter who broke the story, david wood. David, bring us up to date. Good morning, guys. Well, its created, as you can imagine, quite a storm. Look whats important here is that this man is the person to whom weve entrusted the care of our veterans. Yeah. It would be different if it was the secretary of education who made a remark like this. And you know we hold people accountable. Thats what we in the press do we hold them accountable. What happens now i think depends on how this is received by veterans around the country. David its willie geist. Is there any indication that theres a pattern of this from bob mcdonald because if this is in fact, a slip of the tongue hes obviously a guy who has served his life and served with a lot of diss tinkstinction. He graduated from west point and served in the military. Is this evidence of something that should be looked into further . Of course it should be looked into further but i couldnt find any instance where he made this claim before. But, you know heres a guy who made the claim, as i say you know, we hold people accountable. And so i think a lot of people will be watching from this point out. The other point is that he does have a good military record. He served with distinction in the 82nd airborne he went
through Ranger School which is famously very very grueling and he took a number of other courses, desert and arctic and jungle Warfare Training served admirably in the 82nd airborne, rose to be a captain. So he has a good military record. He doesnt need to do this which makes it even more perplexing that he did. All right. David wood thank you very much for bringing us this story. We appreciate you being with us. Mike barnicle what do you think . I think were going way overboard here. With all due respect to david and his reporting youve got a guy here, west point grad 82nd airborne, encounters a homeless person in the streets of los angeles, a guy with no resort to anything. He says, hey, what did you serve with . Special forces. Trying to establish this thing, yeah, i was with special forces. Let it go please. What do you think the people in special forces think . Nothing. You dont think anybody in special forces think anything about a guy who claims to be in
special force . Again 82nd airborne west point grad serving his country now with distinction, let it go. I think what they care about is what he does for the va now. If there is a pattern revealed bigger story. Correct. I dont see it at this point from looking at that. Big news overseas. Potential breakthrough in the talks between iran and United States. Thats just what i was going to say. Really . A new round of negotiations was going the take place next week after senior u. S. Official revealed that progress was made. At this moment the deal would involve a Nuclear Freeze for at least ten years. American officials were pushing for up to 20 years. The deal would keep iran at least one year away from being able to make a bomb but the restrictions would likely be eased as time goes on. Israels defense minister quickly criticized the developments warning while agreement threatens peace in israel and the west it comes as a top secret document from
israels spy agency in 2012 contradicts claims made by Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu in a dramatic speech at the u. N. Where he warned iran was about one year away from making a nuclear bomb. If these are the facts, and they are, where should a red line be drawn . A red line should be drawn right here here, before before iran completes the second take of Nuclear Enrichment necessary to make a bomb before iran gets to a point where its a few months away or a few weeks away from amassing enough enriched uranium to make a Nuclear Weapon. Supporters of the Prime Minister are warning there will be political consequences for democrats who skip his address to congress on march 3rd. But two senior Democratic Senators durbin and feinstein, are infighting him to a closed door meeting with democrats during hiss have it. Mika obviously republicans, john boehner have been attacked for inviting him over for republicans dealing with Benjamin Netanyahu. Now the democrats, you know the president not going to meet him. Doesnt want to see him. Now the democrats are joining in John Boehners game. I think its uncomfortable and divisive. One argument is hes here lets try and meet with him and lets try and make this so both parties have a chance to talk to him. Were running up toward the elections there. The whole thing is wrong. Benjamin netanyahu should cancel. So should the democrats cancel their meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu . It seems to me like theyre stirring the pot even more. At the same time they might be looking for equal time. The whole thing is wrong. Do you know why the democrats are doing this . I think they would like to have access to benjamin
netanyahu as well and hear from him as well and speak to him as well since hes going to be here addressing congress on the invitation of the republicans. I think theyre scared. I think just Like Netanyahu supporters said, democrats who dont show up that dont show up are going to be punished politically and these democrats, after criticizing boehner, are now rushing in the fray to say, me, too, me too, me, too, which i find to be when they say theyre going to be punished politically, what do they mean by that . How would they be punished . I think theyre going to be punished. They are going to look at the people that stand with the Prime Minister of israel whether they like him or not, during a time when a lot of israelis and supporters of israel including myself, across the world believe that irans future is determined by whether iran gets a nuclear bomb or not. So if democrats want to sit on the sidelines during this time let them sit on the sidelines. But people wont forget. Major talks potential deal with iran and six powers right now, its a bad time for this type of political game. If you dont trust the administration and you dont have a Good Relationship with the administration and you are elected to protect and serve the people of israel i think now is the perfect time for Benjamin Netanyahu or any israeli Prime Minister to come over here. I mean when should he come over here . From whose perspective are you speaking . Israeli people. Okay. If lets say and this is so hard for americans to do. But lets say that mexico has been promising to wipe america off the face of the earth for 20 years, just say since 1979 and then we find out that mexico has a Nuclear Program and new zealand is the country thats negotiating with mexico on their
Nuclear Weapons and new zealands leader just doesnt seem to like israels leader. So do you sit back and not get involved in that process or do we have a say as americans about Nuclear Weapons in mexico city that could be pointed up at us . You smirk as if the prospect of a Nuclear Holocaust in israel is a laughing matter. Im not laughing. I just think that its interesting the perspective that youre taking here and i think youre very good at what you do. Whats that . What perspective is that . I ask from whose perspective is this beneficial . And you went right to the people of israel. Israel. Maybe you ought to lead tours like another president ial candidate is. Im telling you right now this whole visit that was started off by john boehner and the republicans and now democrats are getting involved for whatever needs they have is, i think, playing with fire
political gamesmanship and undermining to our president from the perspective of the United States of america. Our president will be just fine. You asked the question though and lets be focused here on what im answering. And that is your question as to why he would come over here now. Im explaining why now because the talks are at a critical stage. I asked why this was a good idea and from whose perspective. Its a good idea from the perspective of a lot of people in israel. Okay. You always smirk. So lets get to the Nuclear Talks between iran and six world powers. Should i talk about the people of monaco better . Should i talk about the people from nice the people you are more familiar with. Maybe the people who represent us in washington who started this whole thing. Im curious as to whether you think its a good idea from that perspective. Well, i think the democrats will jumped onboard so they obviously think its pretty good idea. Jumped onboard. Why do you jump onboard a bad idea. Im holding you to your words. If a ship is going down you dont jump on it. I heard that. Joining us now from washington, codirector of the Trans National threats project at the center for strategic and international studies. I know that place. Tom sanderson. Congratulations, tom, for coming. Were going to let you sort out the debate from mika and myself. And from istanbul Richard Engel. So tom, we have some really interesting developments overnight obviously. Weve got the leaked documents from assad suggesting that the iranians arent actually as close to getting a Nuclear Weapon as Benjamin Netanyahu said they were in the u. N. Speech. Tell us about that. Well, it seems that we have a nice confluence of events here providing a tail wind to the Nuclear Negotiations. You have the leaked documents. You have the continued low oil prices that are pushing the iranians in the direction of making a deal as well as just the overall concern that the hard liners can only be pushed back for so long. In the u. S. You have our president who is eager to get
this done before the election. So you have quite a bit of momentum here that seems to be positive. It looks promising. From the experts that youve talked to from the experts that you trust, from the people that have been involved in these talks that you trust on both sides of the aisle, is this a good deal for america, is this a safe deal for israel . Well, it seems to be the best deal thats out there. I think thats what people are focused on. Youre never going to get the perfect deal. I think the leaked documents reenforce this notion that israel can live with this deal and i think that the u. S. Will as well. So again, its a good deal or the best deal that seems to be on the table right now. Richard engel, let me ask you because its always fascinating. We in america always look at this as an iran versus israel battle when in fact youve got the sunni states across the middle east that are just as fretful of iran getting a Nuclear Weapon as israel. Can you tell me what the response has been as youve gone around the middle east and now in turkey about the possibility of iran getting a Nuclear Weapon . There is an absolute panic in this part of the world about iran getting a Nuclear Weapon. Saudi arabia doesnt want it absolutely. Turkey doesnt want it. The uae was in fact a couple years ago quietly pushing for the u. S. To take preemptive military action against iran. So this is something that israel is deeply concerned about. And the Sunni Arab States. Going back to that leaked document. What exactly did that leak documented say . The leaked document said that when netanyahu went in front of the u. N. With that famous picture of a bomb that his intelligence agencies didnt agree with him, that he was way out ahead of the intelligence agencies and that his intelligence agencies didnt think that the threat was that real. So thats one argument as the other guest was suggesting that would say, well, maybe there is room to have a compromise with
iraq. But what critics have been saying, including in israel and including in the arab world is how do you monitor this . The idea is to keep iran one year away from having a bomb. Well, how exactly do you do that . It involves lots of monitoring. It involves a degree of good faith. Think about iran having all of the pieces for putting a nuknuclear bomb together. Think of a motorcycle thats been taken apart and all the pieces are sitting out in front of a blanket. This is how one analyst described it to me. All you have to do is prevent iran from putting the pieces together. How do you monitor that . They have all the pieces. You just have to watch them and make sure it takes them at least a year to do this assembly project. Thats a very hard thing to monitor. Tom, its willie. From the iranian point of view what is their incentive right now and is their incentive different than from years past from developing a nuclear bomb . Why would they be more so to do it now . I think theres a clear concern that certainly among the leadership the religious leadership, that they very noorly lost the public and the economy is going down the drain. So those are two big incentives on the part of the iranians. They want to be reintegrated normalized and they want to reintegrate with the world economy. Those are huge huge goals for them and this deal gives them a facesaving out. It gives them some capability over time and i think theyre going to take it. Lets move on now to iraq where officials are saying theyre making gains in the fight against Islamic State militants. The progress is being made in the town of el baghdadi. Iraqi Officials Say 70 has been liberated from isis control. Some residents are beginning to return to their homes. And new skooe landzealand will be sending 100 troops to help train iraqi forces. Over in syria a human rights
group is report that isis kidnapped 100 people from christian villages. Meanwhile, new defense secretary Ashton Carter met with more than two dozen military intelligence and diplomatic officials in kuwait to discuss the u. S. Strategy against isis. He referred to the group as team america and told u. S. Troops he is confident victory will be achieved. We are crashing isil from kuwait and elsewhere and we will deliver lasting defeat. Make no doubt. Richard, weve heard a few reports about obviously making gains against isis in el baghdadi and also some supply routes. David ignatius reporting earlier this week being cut off. Isis may not be on the run but certainly over the past couple of weeks, other than putting out horrific videos they do seem to be back on their heels. What are you hearing over there though . I would not be overly
optimistic that they are back on their heels, frankly. Theres been some advances in baghdadi that the government is talking about. The kurds who took that strategic supply route a couple weeks ago are still advancing and theres a Shiite Militia massing on the edge of tikrit. I dont know if you consider that progress or the opposite. But isis still controls the main cities of mosul and isis just broke out into libya. It is effectively taking over a new country. So if that is defeat of isis or isis on the road to defeat i would hate to think what isis success would look like. Richard engel, thank you have been much. Some a very cheerful. Thank you as well, tom. Thank you, richard, as always for always providing a very clear idea of whats going on here. We really appreciate it. Thank you, tom. So mike are we taking isis
seriously enough still . Do you think we finally awakened to the threat . Oh, i think we have awakened to the threat quite a while ago. I think ash carter had it down pretty well. Meeting in kuwait with all the field commanders. I think he has a new purpose, outlining a new purpose. I think were more than taking it seriously. What are we going to do . The president hasnt quite figured out what to do has he . Its a multifacetted threat. Again, you get to our culture more than what isis is doing the, horrendous things they are doing on the ground. This is going to take a long time. Its not going to be done in a week or a month. Were talking five six, ten years perhaps. Willie this israeli visit by Benjamin Netanyahu and the leaked documents and the democrats now scrambling to get private meetings with him. Its a political clown show. It really is. I wonder why from the
beginning they just couldnt do the private meetings rather than the congressional speech and big theater about it. If he wants to visit, thats one thing. But this speech is really the show. And its just laid bare for the entire world, this rift between president obama and Prime Minister netanyahu and its not good for us. Its not good for america. Talk about the israeli people obviously a hot of israelis are concerned as well about the fact that we may actually see israeli Prime Minister coming to speak in the United States, actually hurting the relationship with the president even further. Absolutely. Israelis believe that it couldnt get much worse. Well, and i think you know, i do put it on the republicans who have coordinated this visit. They know this is impeding our ability to have a better relationship with israel and that its hurting our president. And theyre moving forward with it. Its very undermining. Its very divisive. It really is. Theres no question. I wonder what impact it is
having in israel among the electorate. Well see. Well find out pretty quickly. Its not what we should be doing, quite frankly. I cant think of any other situation like this. Can anyone think of a president sort of protocol about having foreign leaders come to visit in the days leading up to an election. We dont do this for a reason. If republicans could only show the restraint that democrats showed when george we w. Bush was president. Like i remember when he went over and visiting Vladimir Putin and very serious talks and the top democrat in the senate got on the floor and showed him the greatest respect, calling him a liar and a fool from the senate floor, the top democrat while he was negotiating with Vladimir Putin. If republicans could just show a dose of the respect shown to george w. Bush why i think dandelions just might sprout all
over capitol hill in the first ray of sunshine. You keep coming back to that and the issue that george w. Bush you keep trying to make it being called into question for has been proven to be an international disaster. You agree harry reid was a liar and a fool and that we should have commander in chiefs in negotiations with one of our top go to break because you wouldnt like my answer. But i think well that this is unusual and we both have agreed it was a bad call from the getgo to invite him here. And i think its only getting worse. And now weve got this deal that were i mean i think it could be seriously extremely damaging. I will tell you if i were a republican president , i would rather have the democrat invite a foreign leader to speak in congress than undermine my negotiations with a russian leader by calling me a liar and a fool. Pick your poison. Still ahead. Abcs Andrea Mitchell and ann curry. Its going to be a big show. Your candidate for president is coming . Yes. Ann curry is coming back from just covering secretary john kerry at the talks in geneva and senator Elizabeth Warren joins us for an exclusive announcement. But first, bill karins with a check on the forecast. Bill . Incredibly miserable winter forecast continues, joe and mika. The temperatures this morning in new england, its like one batch after another. New record lows have been set in many cities. Now we have a big snowstorm possible in the deep south tomorrow. So let me break it down. Already negative 24 was the low temperature in new york. Vermont was negative 27 degrees. This is as cold as it gets for this time of year. All the circles on there are new record lows. How about pittsburgh at minus nine . We are also going to see a little mini snowstorm tonight. This forecast has changed. The storm was going to be off the coast but now it looks a little closer to areas of extreme eastern new england. Of course all eyes on our friends from cape cod to boston
to portland up to bangor maine. They have been hit so hard with so much know and now theyre going to got another three to five inches on top of it. Boston will only be three inches away from all time snowfall record for a winter season. Incredible. This morning worst driving by far just north of atlanta and northern georgia. One to two inches of snow on the ground. Theres sleetnd mixed in with it, too. Be careful around atlanta. Heres the news that changed overnight. This storm is trending for wednesday. Much worse in the south. We could be talking about significant snowstorm. Maybe even a crippling snowstorm for some areas. Winter storm watches go from dallas all of the way through atlanta, birmingham, into charlotte. And my computer is telling me, i mean this is like unheard of for the south. Possibilities of a wide six to ten inches from areas of northern alabama through northern georgia. Possibly upstate South Carolina charlotte, into raleigh. That would be a crippling snowstorm. Wednesday into wednesday night in the deep south. Well have more details on that of course tomorrow and ill break down the city forecast for
you. New york city, we did not get down to our record low but once again, five degrees windchill. Negative six. Let the good times continue. Youre watching morning joe. Woman its been a journey to get where i am. And i didnt get here alone. There were people who listened along the way. People who gave me options. Kept me on track. The big question will the current mayor emanuel get the required majority to get a second term and avoid a runoff. A poll released yesterday morning shows just how crucial each vote may be. He has 48 while cook county commissioner jesus garcia has 27 . That puts emanuel within the margin of error to avoid a runoff. Alaska dispatch alaska is the third state in the u. S. To
legalize recreational marijuana. As of tuesday adult alaskans are lawfully permitted to keep and use marijuana as well as to transport, grow and give it away. The measure to allow smoking in private places was initially passed during novembers election forcing lawmakers and regulators to sort out the details on how to move forward with the new law. While possession is no longer a crime under state law, smoking pot in public can carry a 100 fine. Regulated and taxed marijuana market is not expected to start until at least 2016. All right. The Washington Post, a new Study Suggests exposing infants to peanut products reduces the odds of developing an allergy. Even for children from high risk families. Doctors found that feeding small amount of peanuts to infants between 4 and 11 months helped prevent the allergy by 81 . Wow. Thats huge. That really is. That would make life a lot simpler for a lot of parents. According to the study, peanut

You have to actually have movies that people have seen . People have seen. More americans have seen. Everybody is excited about boyhood and birdman but you just come on. Two great movies but disconnected from where Popular Culture is. Disconnected from the public. The New York Times had a story inside talking about how there was a disconnect between the public and the oscars. The other thing i would say from a production standpoint if your show is going to be 3 1 2 hours, best supporting actor, one guy up there you know and not to take anything away from these people but you go two hours without seeing a star get an award. Were proud to be a part of that. Lets do that next. Do you want to . But first, lets start with Eugene Robinson because joining us from washington is msnbc political analyst, eugene washington. Gene you write in the Washington Post, a deranged gop. Are you ready youjoe . Im ready. This is coming from left field. What . What . Who am i . Obama derangement syndrome is characterized by feverish delir rum. The Republican Party suffered an episode last week when former new york mayor Rudy Giuliani began speaking in tongues about obamas patriotism giulianis burst of nonsense is important because it speaks to the Republican Partys mindset. If the party is going to contend for the white house it first has to fully acknowledge and accept that it lost the last two president ial elections. The nation voted twice for obama and his policies. Deal with it. Republicans need to abandon the fantasy that theres some sort of grand deception underlying the obama presidency. Theyre only deceiving themselves. Well, i actually think that makes sense. I heard somebody explain yesterday, gene that you have like 87 republicans thinking about running for president and 1 democrat. It easy to pick out a crackpot in the crowd. But you did have jeb bush and
mike pence and rick perry and quite a few coming out saying we dont question his patriotism. Is that a fair claim . Well, i think its kind of fair. We had we certainly had marco rubio coming out very quickly and very strong saying that theres no doubt that the president loves america. You know come on. And lets get beyond that. I dont like his policies. Thats fine. That makes sense. Look you know i thought you know, some of the others who either didnt have anything to say, who said well, lets not question his motives without quite answering the question you know kind of in the middle. And then, of course, you had, you know, i mean you could call scott walker a crackpot. Hes kind of crackpot of the week, you know in terms of the attention hes getting in the field. Bobby jindal whom i refer to as general alrk issimo jindal because he says the president is not qualified as commander in
chief. These are substantial figures. I speak as someone who once suffered the outbreak of bush derangement syndrome. You guys recall that. Yes. It was a 12step process to get you through that but you are doing very well now. Exactly. But you have to get over it. You have to get past it and you have to realize frankly, i think that you know look republicans have a pretty good shot of taking the white house if they can get past running against Barack Obamas legitimacy as president which they seem to still be fixated on. Willie you told me you had never seen more people completely at wits end than the morning after george bush got reelected and new york city was Walking Around in a daze. I lived on the Upper West Side. And every saturday i would walk out and, you know you would get the coffee and starbucks and walk across the street and you would see a variety of like pictures and posters of george
w. Bush dressed as hitler. Like there was bush derangement syndrome but somehow they nominated a guy that got past it didnt like bush. Criticized his policies. But barack obama didnt get elected by just railing against bush and calling him a nazi that hated the constitution. Its true 2004 youre talking about when john kerry lost it to george bush. It was such a foregone conclusion in the Upper West Side where we live in manhattan that bush would lose the worst president of all time according to these people nape couldnt believe it when he lost. But i do wonder gene you brought up marco rubios name and answer he gave. Hes gotten praise from both sides from the way he handled the question. Do you think its a worthy conversation though because part of what he said was i dont know why i have to answer for comments made by every other republican. Do you think its important that journalists ask other republican candidates to comment on what Rudy Giuliani or every other republican says . I mean it has a sincere question, was it important that we know what all the candidates
think . Well, kind of. Thats kind of the way we do it willie. I mean it may be you know, in the cosmic i was sitting down and writing the rules of Campaign Journalism from scratch. It may be i wouldnt do it that way but thats the way weve done it for a long time. Its done in both parties. If somebody in a year when theres a crowded field of democrats and somebody says something dumb then everybody piles in. Remember, you know when bill clinton made what he considered an offhand and racial slur in calm in 2008 and everybody jumped in and there was a feeding frenzy about that. Thats the way it works. Thats kind of what you sign up for, i think, when you sign up to run or for president. Eugene robinson thank you very much. Up next the countdown hes looking much better. Getting past bush derangement syndrome syndrome. I feel so much better. Fully functioning. We might have it again. Youve got it, actually group need to talk to mika. It comes back in the next election. All right, the countdown is on to the shut down of the Critical Department of Homeland Security. Joining us now from wilmington dell care Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee, democratic senator to be carer. Very good to have you onboard sir this morning. Good morning, mika. Is the Homeland Security
administration going to shut down . Are we really here again . We have a department of Homeland Security. They run out of money later this week. We should not allow them to run out of money. The men and women who work there and help to protect our country to go to work this weekend and the months ahead. This is a time. Looks like Mitch Mcconnell came up with a good idea. May be a good idea. The idea is to separate one bill into two parts. One to fully fund the department of Homeland Security for the balance of the fiscal year through tend of september, good thing. To provide a separate vote, if you will on whether or not we like the president s ideas for providing some relief from deportation, 3 or 4 Million People here without document documentation documentation. Its a good approach. The devil is in the details. Well look at it more closely. Senator, let me ask you. Why are the democrats blocking a vote on the bill . Well, on this bill . On the one bill or the two bills
coming before us . Its happened what four times, i think, four or five times . Im wondering im wondering democrats are filibustering this bill that the republicans have been trying to get to the floor to debate. Im just wondering why you guys have been filibustering it and not just having an open debate. The legislation thats been added to if you will the language thats been added to a pure funding bill for the department of Homeland Security cost about 7. 5 billion. Its poor substitute for comprehensive Immigration Reform. We need to do comprehensive Immigration Reform. A bunch of democrats and republicans voted for it. Thats what we need to do. In the meantime if the republicans i understand that they dont like what the president did. If you dont like it go to court. They have the opportunity to do that. They had a minor victory in federal court in texas. Pursue that. Pursue that. In the meantime fund the department and do comprehensive
Immigration Reform. A lot of funding bills are not always straight up and down funding bills. These are obviously riders a lot of democrats dont like. My question is why dont democrats just stop filibustering and then you guys can debate this on the floor and possibly possibly get an amendment to strip this part of the bill out . I dont think we should play politics with the department of Homeland Security. These people go to work every day to do their jobs for us. The idea of actually taking up a measure thats going to cost 7. 5 billion doesnt address the problem. Its foolish. Why . Three things we should do. The republicans should go to court. Theyre doing that. Having some success. Pursue that. Second, we should fund the fully fund the department of Homeland Security. Third thing is work on comprehensive Immigration Reform. I was on the border two or three weeks ago, theres so much we should do to secure the border with technology. We should do these things and
move on. Persuasive arguments and i think you shoib able to give them in an open debate on the senate floor. Thats why up saying shouldnt americans hear this debate on the senate floor instead of democrats continuing to filibuster this bill so you can have an open and fair debate on the senate floor . Democrats have been saying for years that the filibuster is not the way to go in this democracy. Well, im not interested in debate with you on filibuster. No, i dont want to debate. Get something done. I want to get something done. That would be great to get something done. I want to get comprehensive Immigration Reform done. I want to let the republicans pursue their judicial debate on the floor . In the meantime i want to make sure we fully fund the department of Homeland Security. Forget this debate on whether we should allow thats what we should do. I think were going tv the chance to do that. I appreciate what Mitch Mcconnell has done. Vote up and down on a clean
fundingfund funding bill. Lets do that. Attach the bill in the house. Lets do that. Lets do that. It looks like well have that chance. Hopefully at the end of the day fully fund the department of Homeland Security people can go to work and get a job to protect their country and get to work on Immigration Reform which is what we really need to do. Let us hope so. Im not interested in you debating me. I want to see the debate on the senate floor and hopefully we will see that there. Thank you for being with us. Coming up next hour were going to be joined by the chairman of the Senate HomelandSecurity Committee, senator ron johnson. Coming up straight ahead mika, who do we have . New jersey governor and possible 2016 candidate Chris Christie is dealing with another problem this morning as he prepares to announce the states budget for 2016. A judge says he broke the law by cutting nearly 1. 6 billion from new jerseys public pension system. Governor kristi is now being ordered to work with lawmakers to restore the funds. State lawmakers however are warning of quote, draconian budget cuts if they need to come up with the money. Gov if Public Employees agree to pay
more toward their pensions but the unions sued after governor christie said the state did not have enough money to make the payments for 2014 and 2015. Apparently the legislature agrees. You come up with 1. 6 billion in spending cuts because a judge rules the way the judge rules . Thats a potential for winner for any candidate going against Union Pension systems. Yeah. But it seems like 1. 6 billion in spending cuts would be crippling to the state if theyve got to go find that to make up for the pension. I mean i understand the pensioner saying hey, we made a deal. You guys promised to pay us this. But not only the governor but also the state legislature is saying we dont have the money. I mean where are they going to cut 1. 6 billion in education . The hard part is for the unions who cut this deal legally and in full good faith now being asked, you know by a governor of any state, not just chris
christie, youve got to contribute an extra dollar a week. The state is going broke. I mean thats just a common sense thing. Yeah. All right. Weve got a lot more ahead. The expenses of u. S. Weve got a potential breakthrough in the Nuclear Talks between raup and six world powers. A new round of negotiations will take place next week after a senior u. S. Official revealed that progress was made. At this moment the deal would involve a Nuclear Freeze for at least ten years. American officials were pushing for up to 20 years. The deal would keep iran at least one year away from being able to make a bomb but the restrictions would likely be eased as time goes on. Israels defense minister quickly criticized the developments warning the agreement will threaten peace in israel and the west. It comes a a top secret document from israels spy agency in 20112 contradicts claims made by Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu in a dramatic speech at the u. N. Where he warned iran was about one year away from making a nuclear bomb. If these are the facts, and they are, where should a red line be drawn . A red line should be drawn right here here, before before iran completes the second stage of Nuclear Enrichment necessary to
make a bomb before iran gets to a point where its a few months away or a few weeks away from amassing enough enriched uranium to make a Nuclear Weapon. Meanwhile supporters of the Prime Minister are warning that there will be political consequences for democrats who skip his address to washington on march 3rd. But two senior democratic senator, dick durbin and Dianne Feinstein, are now inviting him to a closed door meeting with democrats during his visit. Interesting. Also what do you think the president thinks about that . I think the whole thing is really bad. What do you think the president thinks about that . Well, we can ask and well find out today at the press briefing i would think hes probably disturbed be i the whole thing. I think the democrats decided, even if it did bother the president , they needed to invite the israeli Prime Minister over to talk to them. Its complicated. I guess they felt like they needed equal time. But the trip itself is bad news. Really do you think . Yes. So do you. No. The Washington Post is drawing attention to Mike Huckabees frequent visits to israel, even calling him a tour guide of the holy land. Excuse me . He reportedly visits israel sometimes three or four times a year. In fact, the post claims huckabee is shepherding his flock of 253 paying guests around israel for ten days. Id like to go on that trip. I belt he knows the holy land really well if hes gone there enough. See all the sites. Like a cruise. You wouldnt like to go see the holy land with Mike Huckabee . I would love to go see the holy land with Mike Huckabee. I think that would be fascinating. I think hes coming on the show. That would be cool. Seriously, whats the criticism, that hes making money off of it . Why is that a bad thing . I dont know if theres criticism but i think there is always concern about pandering. Right . What . To who . Come on. Oh, come on. But people have to believe like you believe so you think that Mike Huckabee is going over to visit where jesus walked and talked joe, i didnt say that. I said there is concern. I said some say. I didnt say i say. I learned that from one of the greatest in the business. Some are concerned about dot, dot, dot. The bigger issue is the address to congress. People taking a trip around the holy land willie whats wrong with that . Going for 30 years, hes a preacher. I dont see anything wrong with it. Seriously, i want to go with him. Im not saying theres anything wrong with it. I bet you would learn things. Some are. Some might. He would teach us all about the holy land. I think its fascinating. Its a good thing. In the realm of this conversation about the political games being played with israel and the Prime Minister and his visit to address congress is just interesting. Its nothing more than that. Really gotten under youve got to be in your bonnet. No, you dont. I think you do. You have three bees in your bonnet. You have one for israel and one for the republicans and one for you here on the set and you choose all three. Thats hurtful. Yes. Its amazing. You do it with grace and you do it like a dancer. I dont know. Its great stuff. Pretty simple willie. I love jesus. I guess im going to get in trouble for saying that now. No im just saying i love israel. You think its wrong for baner to invite him. She always interrupts me and doesnt let me talk. Its her fault. Why am i constantly being castigated for supporting israel, being a christian. Some say. Some say. Some say you might be b speaking out of both sides of your mouth. President obama pointed out his administration is unhappy with the invitation of Benjamin Netanyahu in part because the israeli Prime Minister is in the middle of an election. Heres what the president said
in a News Conference with Germanys Angela Merkel earlier this month. As much as i love angela if she was two weeks away from an election she probably would not have received an invitation to the white house. And i suspect she wouldnt have asked for one. So, you know so the president was making the irnltpoint that you dont invite leaders over in the days leading up to an election. He wouldnt invite Angela Merkel if it was right before the election. Its precedent. Its precedent. It just doesnt happen. Apparently it has. What . Thank you alex for this. Its not unprecedented. In 1996 the Clinton Administration hosted perez for a u. S. Visit while he was in the midst of an election against Benjamin Netanyahu. Hold it. Ready . Benjamin netanyahu, democratic president have always loathed Benjamin Netanyahu, mike. They always have. Its a tradition in the democratic party. But there is a difference here. Isnt the difference being that john boehner, without telling the state department or the white house that he was inviting the Prime Minister of israel to address the house of representatives or the congress of the United States he gave an impression that the Republican Party, led by the speaker, now has their own separate policy. Thats problem number one, mike. Problem number two is that the israelis didnt say, i got this invitation from john boehner. Im going to take it but i wanted to talk to you about it first. Yes. Senator secretary of state kerry, we should probably send somebody over to the white house to sit down with president obama and talk through this. Well, i mean the root of this has to do with the israeli
ambassador to the United States who has apparently in league with his Prime Minister his boss. His boss. They have decided to have under speaker boehner, their own separate for writteneign policy. One dealing with the state department and the other dealing with the republican led congress. See how that can work out . Yes. I can look at the facts and say this is the way things should have been done. But they werent done that way, so since they arent done that way yes, since they arent done that way . You can understand why the israelis are doing what theyre doing. Listen, my problem actually, again, you say im talking out of both sides of my mouth. Im not. My problem is not with the israelis doing this. If i was an israeli Prime Minister i would be as aggressive as humanly possible. My problem is more to what happened with the invitation john boehner, and what happened state side. Now, i do think, because i worry about whats in the best
interest of israel the israelis should have picked up the phone, called the state department and said, hey, listen were going to do this. We know youre not going to like it but lets talk about it lets work through it. I dont want you to get blind sided. Dont blind side the president about a state of the union address. All right. We can agree on that. Time is running out for lawmakers to fund the department of Homeland Security my name is not mike. For some reason he was able to elicit that reaction from you. My jail is joe. Im not lisa. My name is julie. Lisa left two years ago. Moving on now. In a vote 4746 last night Senate Democrats again blocked a funding bill that also reversed president obamas executive actions on immigration. Whats Richard Haass doing in the president of the senates chair . Thats not haass. Thats not haass. He told us he was diplomatic trip. There he is. Richard. Yes, it is look at him. Uhuh. He was right on afghanistan. Afterwards, Mitch Mcconnell took to the floor and said its time to take a different tactic to fund the hs. Fund it separately than the one to fund Homeland Security. Meanwhile, jay johnson warned of the impact inaction would cause. A shutdown of Homeland Security would have serious consequences and amount to a serious disruption in our ability to protect the homeland. As ive said many times now, its like trying to drive acrosscountry with no more than five gallons of gas in your tank and you dont know when the gas station will appear. This is no way to run a government. Isnt it interesting, quickly, about secretary johnson. He goes out. He says basically, if you go to mall of america you know watch
out because theyre coming to get you. He didnt say that. Watch out because, did you ever see the gauntlet with clint eastwood, thats what its going to be like when you decide to go no to j. Crew and get those tshirts. No, he did that. Fbi was like whoa whoa whoa cool, man, cool out. Fascinating. Whats going on here . He was on meet the press. He didnt quite say it the way you said it. He said see something, say something. The good news is if you listen to the reports though people of mall of america say the place was packed on sunday. People were going out and doing their thing. Obviously that has been the fear. We talked about on this show before the great fear from antiterrorism experts which is somebody goes in to the heartland, into minneapolis, st. Paul, somewhere like that and goes into a mall and does something because now youve got an entirely new kind of fear. Lets bring in capitol correspondent Kelly Odonnell and then well bring in senator that knows an awful lot about this, senator johnson. All right. First lets start with the mcdon
mcconnell strategy. This is a new twist where Mitch Mcconnell is trying to smoke out some of the conservative democrats or sent terrorist democrats who said they dont agree with the president s strategy put forward in november. Mcconnell is trying to tick away some of the leverage by saying lets have a stand alone bill to give senators an opportunity to weigh in on the president S Immigration executive order separate from the dhs funding. So weve been wait for what is the path. This is one of the strategic ways that mcdonnellconnell is going to try to shake things up. It would give a chance for senators to be on the record. Congress would have a voice on this. Were not sure how the house would react to it yet but it would be a way to say to democrats who have been critical of the president s action but have been voting in lock step with their party to stop this dhs bill from moving forward because they dont like some of the other provisions. It would give a chance to put
people on the record and at the same time maybe give a way out for republicans who really do say its time to fund the department based on the things youve just been talking about whether its a mall threat or all of the other issues. We dont have the whole end game yet but this is a first play by Mitch Mcconnell to try to do something strategic so that he can see if theres a way forward. Nbcs kelly oconnell, thank you. Joining us now from capitol hill chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee, republican senator ron johnson of wisconsin. Senator, thank you for being with us this morning. Lets pick up with kelly left off. What do you think of Mitch Mcconnells idea the plan to separate out the immigration from funding dhs and get this thing funded by friday . Im still not sure what the result of that is going to be. I would continue to say lets concentrate on the areas of agreement. I dont know any republican that doesnt want to fund the essential, the authorize illegal activities of Homeland Security. We all share the same goal. We want to keep america safe and secure. The easiest way to get by this impasse created by president obama is lets get a funding bill appropriation bill on the Senate Senate floor and start the debate. But Senate Democrats have been blocking that. I dont know a better place really within government to have that thoughtful debate, that discussion so you can find the areas of agreement and, again, let me emphasize. We all want to fund the essential, authorize illegal activities of department of Homeland Security to keep this nation safe. Im sympathetic with secretary johnson. I think hes a good man. I want to do everything i can to help him achieve his mission of keeping this nation safe. Again, the best way of doing that is lets just put the bill in appropriation bill that has to go to the house, get it on the floor of the senate. Offer amendments. Weve shown our isnt that the right way to do it . No its not the right way to do it. Isnt the right way to do it isnt the right way to do it if everyone is so concerned, so onboard to fund the department
of Homeland Security, split the bill, do a dhs bill this afternoon and according to your logic and your math it would pass immediately. Lets look at what we agree on. We agree on funding the essential and authorized illegal parts. Theres disagreement. Theres an area dispute here. Lets face it the courts have lend credence to the argument what president obama done haS Immigration by the way, its president obama who put Immigration Reform and law into this debate on funding Homeland Security. Basically president obama democrats are holding our Homeland Security hostage for their form of Immigration Reform. We have disagreements on that. Lets concentrate on the areas of agreement. Fund the essential authorized and legal part of Homeland Security. Senator johnson, senator mcconnell is supposedly going to support two separate bills. One for dhs and one for immigration. A lot of people dont understand why these bills are combined in the first place. Its like going to the grocery
store and paying your grocery bill and the cashier suddenly says to you, oh, youve got to pay your home heating bill here too, or you dont get your groceries. Why not split the two and vote on them separately. Seems simple. Because president obama picked this fight. He so be bigger than him. Unilateral executive action is changing immigration law. Thats what a judge has ruled. Hes not just engaging in prosecutorial discretion. Hes changing law. Hes granting Social Security cards to people who have come to this country illegally which offers additional benefits to them, work permits. Hes changing the law. Theres a dispute on that. Lets not concentrate on the areas of division. Lets concentrate on the areas of agreement. We all want to fupd the Homeland Security department. Lets do that and put let the courts decide if Immigration Reform aspects of this. What president obama ought to do is say, okay the court if its not funded senator, if its not funded if dhs is not funded after friday, youre going to have the most
visible aspect of department of Homeland Security tsa, people at the airports going to work and not getting paid. I want to fund i want to fund the department. President obama can fix this very easy. So can secretary johnson. The courts are smoking. We will set that aside. Lets concentrate on the areas of agreement. All come together. Lets fund the essential authorized and legal elements of the department of Homeland Security and keep this nation safe. We could have a bill completed this week, no problem. There would be no crisis. It was caused by president obama and democrats are blocking us bringing appropriation bill on the floor of the senate where we can find the common ground. Im not sure its going to be blamed president obama if it has if the department has to pull it down. Senator, let me jump in here. Weve been showing polls all weekend. I know youve seen these polls. Mitch mcconnell has seen the polls that show that republicans will bear the disproportion of blame if this government is
if this very important part of government gets shut down during the rise of isis during all of the threats that you know about as well as anybody on capitol hill. Is that why Mitch Mcconnell is now talking about putting a clean bill on the floor . It is unfortunate reality that the Mainstream Media is not on the republican side. Always blame us. In this case, i think we dont should terer the blame here because president obama picked this fight. Democrats in the senate that are blocking a bill to come to the floor of the senate for debate discussion preventing us from trying to find the areas of agreement and common ground. You do understand everybody wants to fund the department of Homeland Security. So get a clean bill and do it. It looks like that it looks like theyre going to do that. The frustration for a lot of republicans in the senate was voiced by marco rubio last it night when he said i thought it was funny. He said when we filibuster a bill and the government shut downs we take the blame. When democrats filibuster a bill and the governments shut down we take the blame. And thats there you go. A lot of people would look at what the senator said certainly on the republican side about the Mainstream Media and agree with him. Senator ron johnson, i know its going to be very contentious over the next couple of days but we would love to have you back and talk about the bill. Wish you the best of luck. Get the department funded. The area of agreement twroo, concentrate on that. Okay. Have a great day guys. Thank you. Still ahead, congressman aaron lets talk about that for a second. Mike, so mike what do you think . I dont understand why they dont adopt Mitch Mcconnells idea and just vote a clean bill in dhs, get it done. Get it done this afternoon. The immigration thing is going to get dragged out for months and months and months. And you have a federal judge that stopped the immigration deal in its tracks. I think the Supreme Court im guessing is going to weigh in and probably find the president overreached anyway. Im wondering why they dont say, hey, let the courts take
care of this. For now were going to fund it fully, clean bill but well be back in three months if the Court Decides to go another way. I think they will. I think they will. Majority leader come out yesterday, the leader of the party saying heres my idea. I think they will go that way. They cant wake up saturday morning with no dhs and say, look what the republicans did. They all know that. Okay. Still ahead, congressman aaron schock made headlines for lavish office decor. Now new reports about expensive travel and katy perry concert. Mass samg sages. liberated from isis control and some residents are starting to go back to their homes. Meanwhile, new defense secretary ash on this carter met with two dozen military officials in kuwait to discuss the strategy against isis and referred to the quote, the team as quote, team america. Told u. S. Troops hes confident victory will be achieved. I asked earlier, your colleague, in turkey Richard Engel, if we were making progress. And richard said he wasnt so sure. I wouldnt say that. He was as skeptical as a guy who has been reporting on these sort of things for at least 12 years in iraq. Are the generals skeptical . Theyre not skeptical. Theyre somewhat hopeful. But i sort of agree with richards assessment of the situation on the ground there. Its take a little ground here give a little ground there. Its pretty much at a stalemate. Now this constant relentless bombing and air strikes have taken a toll on isis in general,
but not enough to dislodge them from key areas like that second largest city of iraq mosul where last week inexplikably and surprisingly a u. S. Military official at centcom revealed part of the game plan to attack mosul with iraqi forces in as little as four to six weeks, joe. And, mik, its wily. Part of the president s plan is 25,000 troops. Not american troops but troops to fight against isis. Is this realistic . Were being sold a plan that doesnt involve american ground forces. But how can we really defeat isis wouldnt sending in troops . And if so are the American People going to go along with Something Like that . Even the generals and military leaders are somewhat skeptical because the 25,000 troops are primarily iraqi. And those will be the ones that lead this offensive to try to retake mosul from isis control. But the folks were talking to here at the pentagon say that
the primary force will be the toughest, the most experienced iraqi forces that have pretty much been used to guard baghdad. They will be shifted up toward mosul so theres a glimmer of hope that 25,000 iraqi forces and some kurds can at least overrun 2,000 of isis forces but it will be tough urban battle thauz theyre dug into mosul. Joining us now from washington with a look at this mornings may book, the chief White House Correspondent for politico mike, one of politico politicos big stories this morning, president obama planning to make a big pitch to woo liz best warrens wing of the democratic party. What is he going to announce and why is he doing this . Mika were about to hear from senator warren here on morning joe and she has never been more powerful. Mika, you and i have talked
about how shes influencingeing the conversation of the president ial race on both sides. That meeting with just learned about with secretary clinton. Now hes also influencing the white house. When president obama went out yesterday at the aarp and got huge applause for announcing a crackdown on Financial Advisers and the retirement advice that they might give that would steer them toward more commissions, there was senator warren on the stage and she was a big reason that the president was giving that speech. The white house has been playing defense against wall street and big banks. The president listening to senator warren recognizing how much clout she has in this party, wants to go on offense by showing that he will also use the Regulatory Framework to go of them. Senator warren who is today introducing that middle class prosperity project which were about to hear about has a big audience. Republicans, democrats, the white house. All right. Politicos mike allen, thank
you. Thank you, mike. Great to see you. Lets bring in Senior EditorJamie Weinstein and also editor and chief of National Memo and editor of Investigative Fund joe. Guys, great to see you. Jamie, you wrote that Hillary Clinton, sort of called to history for her and a lot of democrats are excited about her. But you say thats their strongest card. The record is a little weak. I was trying to figure out what makes Hillary Clinton such a strong candidate, why is there so much passion around here why basically clearing the field. If you look at her senate record, its not that she was a terrible senator she was an unremarkable senator. Its hard to find pieces of legislation she pushed through, signature pieces of legislation. Then you look at the state department and you dont assign any of those i know you talked about this remarkable, you know breakthroughs that some secretary of states have. In fact i would say the most notable thing she said as
secretary of state was convince president obama to launch this operation the libya which in fact had now left a safe haven for terrorists. I dont see kind of what would draw the passion other than the fact that some democrats really want the first female president of the United States. Joe, i know you will disagree absolutely with everything that he just said because weve been talking about the clinton on thes for 20 years. Respond to something we talk about on the set, that Hillary Clinton would be better as we saw in 2008 when shes challenged, when shes pushed. She was a weak candidate and then she got pushed against the wall in New Hampshire and we talk about it every day, she became a remarkable candidate. Look joe, i think that is doesnt she need competition . If there is a problem for her campaign, thats the problem. Its not what jamie said. Its not that people cant find things she did. She did a lot in the senate for veteran, women, children. Especially for women. Especially for women. Lily ledbetter, a lot of stuff. But the problem is going to be the lack of competition the. What did you take away if anything, jamie, from her book tour . This is her rolling out, back on the stage, having to answer questions. Did that make you more or less optimistic about her as candidate, not you personally but if you were a democrat would you lk at her and say i feel better or worse about her as a candidate . I think less. We talked on the substanance. But what has she done that she would be a great candidate . When she ran in new york that wasnt a very tough race. She was coming off being first lady against not a very strong opponent when she first faced competition, 2008 with barack obama. And at the beginning she was prohibited favorite and what happened . She lost. Theres no great record did you cover the new york race . Were you here when it happened . No i was not not. Are you rick lazio was a great candidate . Carpet bagger new york post
coming against her, fox news the whole apparatus. It was not an easy race. She was not from here. But she was she ran a very good race. Listening tour. She did her listening tour. Thank you, mika. Youre welcome. It wasnt like some cake walk. It was actually up to close to the end tough race. Conservative republican i mean, she was running against a conservative republican congressman in new york state. We had a republican governor then. Who is the last republican governor in new york . I mean the last republican senator to win in new york . The last republican senator it would have to go back a long time. Al dimado. How quickly we forget. Sorry, senator. But if i way, so certainly i want to go to the book tour though really quickly. It seemed to be a disaster. Even democrats are trying to figure out what happened there. What happened there, joe conason . Joe, i dont know what happened with the book tour. Youre supposed to know all things clinton. Thats why were year. If you look at your poll this months nbc maris poll, what does it show . Prohibitive favorite. Among all democrats, against every republican in iowa and New Hampshire, look at the numbers. Jamie you look at clinton versus the gop in iowa. Hillary at 45 huckabee 38. Hillary, 45. Jeb bush, 45 35. 4535 over walker. 4535 over christie. I mean i understand we all talk around this table, the book tour was, what an inspiring candidate she is how she seems to be out of political shape, how its going to be a disaster blah, blah blah blah blah. She ill feel like rosanna dana dana. She looks strong but shes
not in the race yet. I personally believe shes a better pretend candidate than actual candidate. Shes a concept. Yeah. I think shes a concept. Stem the former secretary of state right now. Shes kind of on this pedestal. Ten seconds. Joe conason, whats your message . Lets see when jeb bush starts to run as he started to run, not looking so grate. I think the one thing jamie is right about is when youre very much at the top, as she is there is going to be erosion. Theres going to be a slip and shell start to run and something will happen. Guys thank you so much. Appreciate you being here. Up next is atomic iran only a matter of time . Joining us now nbc news chief Foreign Affairs correspondent and host of Andrea Mitchell reports Andrea Mitchell. In washington nbc news special correspondent ann curry just back from traveling with secretary of state john kerry. Ann, what is your take at this point on this potential deal . First of all, good morning, mika and joe and andrea. Its great to be here. The bottom line is that theyve moved closer to making a deal. There were very positive signs in this latest round of negotiations towards making a deal. One was that it was the highest level Cabinet Meeting in 30 years with four members of the cabinets, plus the president , president s brother, the iranian president s brother, closest adviser. Also it was the first time that the u. S. Secretary of energy and his iranian counterpart met together, which talked about which really showed us there was
a deepening of the technical discussion mika. So i think theres no doubt and there was also a new level of optimism. I think we all moved away from it. As you know, mika when you cover these things and andrea certainly will know oftentimes its very very difficult to get clear answers from either side because theyre speaking when they do speak to us its off the record because clearly theyre keeping the details close to the vest. Andrea mitchell how close does this deal look to realistically be and what are the tough issues . There are still some tough issues and one of the problems politically is going to be that the u. S. Move closer to the iranian side on how long a Nuclear Freeze would be before iran could start breaking out. We want 20 years, right . And now it seems as though theyre talking ten years, which is quite a change. Now, obviously theres going to be a lot of pushback from israel and from other critics in the region the Sunni Arab States who are very concerned about a nuclear iran. That said right now you just have this leak of documents from
south africa intelligence which certainly suggests and the u. S. Was quick to confirm it that at the same time that netanyahu was addressing the u. N. With that silly cartoon that looked like it was of the bomb 90 there. Exactly. That the assad was saying that is not correct, iran is not weaponizing. That undercuts netanyahu, interestingly, a month before elections, a week before he comes here nor thisfor this very controversial speech in congress. So theres a lot of posturing going on by all sides. Mike barnicle . Ann, as you know from your travels and your coverage and your reporting, this would entail the United States and iran arriving in agreement, a certain element of trust. Now, on the record Officials Say very little about how they arrive at these potential details. But you, off the record in talking to people what level is there of an element of trust between the two countries, between the secretary of state and the iranians and what would
cause this element of trust to be there . Yeah. Its hard to measure the level of trust but i can tell you that its remarkable the amount of trust that there does exist between the secretary of state and the Iranian Foreign minister. They seem to be very comfortable together. They seem to have in the year and a half since this negotiation has become public clearly there were discussions beforehand beforehand, but in the year and a half its become public its gone from zero to way down the road. I mean its really remarkable. So i think, you know right now what its about is the level of trust and understanding on these very specific technical details. And i think thats something that this latest round, i think, moved them forward on. Andrea . I think one of the issues though is where he really has the support of the hard liners and of the Supreme Leader who has the final say over this. And in the past in 2009 we were all in geneva everyone thought there was a deal inked where the enriched uranium would be sent to russia to be cleaned up and repossessed and went back and what they found out later is the Supreme Leader the ayatollah said i didnt give you permission to approve that deal so it was out over. The concern by critics is that the president and john kerry see this as their legacy. This is the big deal. This is the big breakthrough. The argument on the other side is that it is safer to have eyes on iran if you can trust that the verification will be really intense. The concern also is that the u. S. Has already conceded far more centrifuges, the pieces of equipment that would be able to enrich uranium. This would require a lot more inspectors and a lot of evidence that iran isnt cheating in the future. We will see. Ann curry, thank you. So good to see you. make. Ers to fund the department of Homeland Security. Senate democrats again blocked a funding bill that would have reversed president obamas executive actions on immigration. After ward Mitch Mcconnell took to the floor and said that its time to take a different tact. He said he plans to introduce a bill targeting the president S Immigration policy separate from the one to fund Homeland Security. Kind of makes sense. Early earlier we spoke with the chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate HomelandSecurity Committee. How did that go . What do you think of Mitch Mcconnells idea to separate out the immigration from funding Homeland Security . Im still not sure what the result of that is going to be. I would continue to say to concentrate on the areas of agreement. I dont know any republican that doesnt want to fund the essential of Homeland Security. E we want to keep america. Safe and secure. The easiest way to get by this impass created by president obama is lets get a funding bill, an appropriation bill on the senate floor and start the debate. But democrats have been blocking that. I understand they dont like it. I appreciate what Mitch Mcconnell has done. Well have a chance to vote up or down. Lets do that. Well have a chance o to vote up or down on the writers attached to the bill. Lets do that. He talked a lot. I didnt get a chance to get a word in. You got a word in. I was pushing the Ranking Member, the democratic Ranking Member to say why dont you just put it on the floor and get a clean vote up or down. You were pushing, obviously, the chairman. Why dont you get a clean bill on the floor up or down. At the end of the day, Mitch Mcconnell is going to get what Mitch Mcconnell wants. Hes going to put a bill on the floor thats completely clean of any writers. Absolutely because Mitch Mcconnell is a realist. He knows what will happen if they dont fund the department of Homeland Security by friday. A new round of Nuclear Negotiations will take place after a senior u. S. Official revealed that progress was being made was made between iran and six world powers. The deal involves a Nuclear Freeze for at least ten years. American officials were pushing for up to 20 years. Supporters of the Prime Minister are warning that there will be political consequences for democrats who skip his address to congress on march 3rd. If you can walk out on this story, im going to get my congressional pen and put it right here. Im going to go and sit down and watch it. You do some of your best work with this story. New jersey governor and possible 2016 candidate Chris Christie is dealing with another problem this morning as he prepares to announce the states budget for 2016. A judge says he break the law by cutting 1. 6 billion from the pension system. Hes being ordered to work with law make oers to restore the funds. State lawmakers are warning of draconian budget cuts. Christie is vowing to appeal the ruling if Public Employees agree
to pay more. But the union sued after christie said the state did not have enough money to make payments for 2015. Like we said before, easy for the judge to put this ruling out there. I understand the unions being upset. Now theres not the money to take care of the deal. The financial situation is worse. Where do you come up with 1. 6 billion in spending cuts. I think this is a Chris Christie issue and a new jersey legislative issue. I guarantee democrats arent looking forward to cutting 1. 6 billion from the budget. They have to find a way to come together. The Associated Press is Digging Deeper into the expenses of of the Illinois Republican for his office decor. And now there are reports he spent taxpayer money and Campaign Funds to fly in private
jets. They identified a dozen flights worth more than 40,000 since mid2011. He took his interns to an out of state katy perry concert. Records revealed a 2,000 expense from stubhub listed as a fundraising event. 1,400 from a pac went to a massage parlor. He responded to the reports saying he travels frequently to raise money for his Campaign Committee and congressional colleagues. Hes already being investigate ed for allegations that he illegally solicited donations in 2012. We know we like him, we had
him on the show. I wrote this down. Massage parlors, katy perry concerts private jets office decor, its just not good. Its interesting how the ap tracked this down. The congressman enjoys taking self selfies of himself and posting them on instagram and he did so around the country and when you post it on instagram, they were able to find out geographically. Isnt it interesting how these stories come up where something a meaningless story like the office put in the style section put in a stir. How that gets other people digging in. We have seen it time and again with bill cosbys allegations it all started with a standup comic attacking him on youtube and it going viral. It doesnt look good. Lets move on to a morning joe exclusive. Joining us from washington is
democratic senator Elizabeth Warren of massachusetts and the Ranking Member of the committee on oversight and government form Elijah Cummings of maryland. They are here to announce their push for what they call the middle class prosperity project. It is good to have you both on the show this morning. So you have cowritten a piece in usa today. Id like to read part of it that crystallizes what you are launching today. After the 2008 economic collapse massive Financial Institutions received billions of dollars in bailouts while families across the country watched helplessly as their home values and savings crashed and millions of jobs disappeared. These events were not caused by an invisible hand. They were not the inevitable result of globalization or organic market trends. Instead, powerful Interest Groups massive corporations and the super rich rigged the system to jack up their profits and grab the spoils for themselves. For too long government has worked for the rich and powerful. Government needs to work for americas middle class again and elizabeth, ill start with you. How do you expect the series of events to make a change that we havent seen so far. You say this administration has made great strides. What needs to be done . Coming out of this great recession, the administration has done a lot. The economy is surely recovering, but it means that rich people are doing well. Giant corporations are doing well and the middle class is still just getting hammered. And what is this congress doing the republicans are now in charge. What did they spend their time on . First, weeks on a pipeline that would benefit some foreign oil company and now they want to spend a month on shutting down Homeland Security at a time when we face terrorist threats. So what were doing trooiing to do is get some focus on whats happening to americas working people. Whats happening to the middle class. And to remind people middle class is in trouble because of deliberate policy choices made in washington. That means we can make changes here in washington. Thats what we want to draw attention to and focus on. So senator, the rich have been getting rich and the poor have been getting poorer. The middle class have been hammered for the past 30 years. Real wages have dropped. Tem us one thing specifically, and i first ask the senator, whats one thing in this bill thats going to reverse those trends . Lets just refinance student loan debt. Theres 1. 2 trillion outstanding in Student Loans. 40 million americans are dealing with Student Loans. What is the United States government doing . The United States government is making a profit off those Student Loans. Just the Student Loans that went out between 2007 and 2012 just that cohort of loans, after you account for the bad debt losses and the administrative costs and the cost of the funds, that group of loans is on target to produce 66 billion in profits for the United States government. In other words, what were doing right now is we are taxing young people who are trying to get an education. People who are trying to start their lives and had to borrow money to go to school, we are taxing them so that tax loopholes can stay open for millionaires and billionaires. Thats a change and thats a change we can make right now. Student loans is one change. Whats another one . Childcare. People are spending so much
money on childcare. More than they would spend for a a college education. We have to find ways to help folks because more and more people now have to have two income earnings. Whats happening is that the Corporate Executives and stockholders are getting more of the corporate profits while americans are working harder but getting less. Still the cost of housing and education and health care those thing things are going up, but wages are stagnating. Talk about the specifics of childcare childcare. What does this bill call for . Keep in mind, this is a project. Right now, were bringing in experts experts to inform us of the things we need to be doing. Not only must the congress be informed but the American Public must be informed about what is going on. More and more they are looking at their paychecks at the end of
the week and saying, wait a minute, im getting less and less but still im producing more and more. Thats a problem. When you look at childcare, you can look at studies and see the earlier you invest in the life of somebody, if you invest in job training for a guy thats my age youre going to get the least amount of return and you can go all the way back. You invest early on in childcare, you do get the biggest bang for your buck. Statistically, its proven time and time again. Youre covering the child, youre covering the working family family. Senator warren, as you know, i have heard you several times, your message, people listen to it. Its galvanizing, its encourage encouraging to people. But my question to you is, and to congressman cummings, everything you talk about and the two items you have mentioned here today, childcare and Student Loans, what are the
prospects for passage of legislation in the near future not down the road but people get frustrated and might give up on listening to your message. You know, the prospects are a whole lot better if you get out and fight for it. If we sit back and continue to have debates over pipelines for Foreign Oil Companies and shutting down Homeland Security not one thing will get done for americas working families. Were trying to put some wind in the sails here to get some change. Because ill tell you this. Washington works great. It works just great for people who can hire armies of lobbyists and lawyers. If youre a giant corporation, this place is working for you. Its out there to do your business. Working families its not working so great for you. So how are we going to get washington to work again for working families . The answer is we have to get out there and stir it up a little bit. We have to be out there talking
about these issues and get people all across this country to call their congressman, to call their senators to raise some sand about this. Look, people told me we couldnt get the Consumer FinancialProtection Bureau the big banks fought it. We have a good strong Consumer FinancialProtection Bureau today. Why . Because people across the country said that sounds like a good idea. Im willing to fight for it. They pushed enough people in the senate and the house that we got it through. We have people who want to see changes in childcare, who want to see changes in Student Loans. All we have to do is harness that energy and make it happen. Elijah you have big name economists getting behind this. Are you hitting the road . How will you get the message out there and getting to people . The first thing were going to do and we may very well be moving throughout the country. The main thing is to put a mega phone to the people that elizabeth was talking about. People who are not looking for a hand out, but look inging for a a fair shake. We have to continue to push, push, push. I would consider it political malpractice if we didnt address these issues. There are a lot of people ready for warren. Some would say, stop it joe. You built the bureau you have run for senate and your message is always clear. With all these people coming at you and poking at you, would the passion that you have on the issue of the middle class, how could you not be considering it . I dont think this is about me. I think this is about the set of issues. And what i want to do is talk as hard and as long and as loud as i need to to get people

So we went down to florida, visited my relatives, i heard it was going to be in the 40s. I get back and its in the 30s and dropping. Now youre on a frozen hudson river. And its not going to stop is it . Im sorry, joe, that you left florida to come back to these cold temperatures. I feel really bad, i do. We are on a very frozen hudson river right now between albany new york and west point, new york. Thats where the river tends to freeze. Further south near the harbor its too salty so we dont see the freezing. All this ice that gets broken up by this cutter has the potential to clog the new york harbor. So theres a delicate balance of how much you can cut. Its going to get louder and louder. Imagine blending a margarita,
the ice youre crushing is what were doing here. The hull of the ship is built to crush through about 13 inches of ice at a time. And these boats, about two to three go out every single day to break up the ice. They are doing it more this year than they have since 2004. Its just been so exceptionally cold, they have so much ice to break up because you need the barges to run up and down the river. They carry 70 of the Home Heating Oil to the northeast. Thats why this waterway is so important and why the coast guard has the cutters to break up the ice to transport the oil because people need the heat on right now. Its going to stay cold through at least the beginning of march. Terrific, dylan, thank you very much. Coming up, well go live to Richard Engel to for the latest on the fight against isis. its good news for consumers. Gas prices are down 40 since last april. Thats just extra pocket money. They have been saving it for now. Were going to see if they are going to go to retailers, go to restaurants, we know they are buying new cars. 1,000 in a tax cut. Are they buying gas guzzlers . Were seeing a trend back to gas guzzlers. Thats a big debate as to what happens to fuel efficient cars. I was moderating an event yesterday about the drop in gas prices and the effect for the economy and the economists i talked to said hes actually hand handing over the keys to the gas guzzler to their kids now as opposed to the fuel efficient car because they are saving so much money. Theres some gains, but in some ways its problematic. Stay with us. We have Maggie Murphy coming as well. Lets bring in White House CorrespondentChris Jansing with the latest on the possible
shutdown. The white house thinks they have the political upper hand in this. They put on the fullcourt press over the last couple of days. You saw the oped piece where the president called the shutdown irresponsible. We heard from him yesterday. Jay johnson has been everywhere. The head of fema was out. Among the messages that not only is National Security at tamestake, but also the livelihoods of americans. For 200,000 employees, an excruciating wait to see if congress will fund the the department of Homeland Security. Tsa officers at airports border control, the coast guard, fema workers and secret Service Agents agents. Overall 80 of workers would still have to show up if congress doesnt fund dhs, but they wont get paid. President obama made an appeal to the nations governors. It will have a direct impact on your economy and it will have a direct impact on americas National Security. 30,000 more workers will stay
home. Fema will stop sending checks to rebuild from natural disasters. Those funds will still be there but the feem required to actually make those payments to oversee that will not be there. With the clock ticking, another Senate Debate but no resolution. There was some Movement Last night. Mitch mcconnell made a move to separate funding from the im immigration fight. Obviously, a lot of republicans out there worried about the impact both shortterm and on the 2016 election and what white house Officials Say as they would love to see this get done. Nobody is relishing the idea of those dhs workers not getting paid but they think that it would hurt the republicans significantly. So they basically they are putting the fullcourt press on and getting the message out there, the white house says its
not going to get in the middle of the negotiations. Chris jansing, thank you. Now we move to iraq where Officials Say they are making gains in the fight against militants militants. Iraqi Officials Say 70 of the town has been liberated and some are beginning to return to their homes. Does the pentagon trust its iraqi counterparts and are these gains being made in your estimates . Reporter first answer is absolutely not. The u. S. Military has very little confidence in the iraqi army and the iraqi army has not proven that it deserves to have the confidence of the u. S. Military or really any other mill military. The iraqi army effectively cut and ran when isis showed up in very small numbers and now the iraqi army is infiltrated by Shiite Militias many of them tied to iran who are leading the
fight. I think the Iraqi Government is trying to put the best face it can on the war on isis so is washington. Both are making noises about progress in a relatively minor front north of baghdad. Its also important because its just a few miles away from a base where several hundred marines are based as advisers. If were measuring success in a general war against isis in 70 of a relatively minor town this looks like its going to be a very long fight indeed. Richard engel, thank you very much. Both sides will use analysts to look at the songs. What are they looking for with. They are going to be showing similarities or differences of melody. Take the hit stay with me, sam smith agreed to give cowriting credits to tom petty. But with blurred lines both sides are digging in for a public legal battle. Thats the 64,000 question. how is Technology Changing love and romance . The new issue of wired magazine looks at sex in the digital age. Its editor joins us now. Jason, in all seriousness, what was the discussion in. The editorial meeting about why this should be the cover . What were some of the key issues that you felt hes already smiling. Im naturally happy. I think theres some real
concerns that were confronting as society. Absolutely. As it pertains to sex, relationships, love romance. Sure so this is an issue we talked about for years. Because technology is changing every aspect of our lives. Its changing our sex lives in our relationships as well. We waited until we had enough information where we arent just doing think pieces. We have real material here. We have a story that essentially is a yelp for prostitutes that was shut down and ended up decimate ing decimating the safety of sex workers in san francisco. We have a story on the emergence of Virtual Reality pornography. Its not exactly what youd think of. Its not lawn mower man fantasy. Its more intimate. We have been e massing stories for years and finally had enough to confront it. I was going to say its
interesting how disruptive this technology is now making something so fundamental. How do adults like mika and i have teens, how do we have the conversation since the sex lives are so different than previous generations. How are they different . So in a way, its scary. On the other hand whats great about it is people dont have to feel alone or scared anymore. A lot of learning about sexuality when youre younger is ail alienating and scary. Whats frankly kind of nice is there are a lot of communities out there no matter what your proclivity you dont need to feel alone or wrong in some way. There are communities that can sort of help you figure out who you are and work through it. Whatever youre looking for seems to be out there as far as a relationship or interaction. Touch on a problem that we should go there. For young people for your children that youre bringing into this world that were trying to guide them it is desensitize desensitizing what they have access o to. It seems theres a Business Aspect to this but theres also a social aspect to this which is really jarring for young people. Even as a parent you cant decide what your children are exposed to because they may not hear it at home but they go to school and they have classes. Theres a lot of information. I came back from camp with a lot of information. To be clear, this is not the pornography issue. Thats one thing, its an issue, but its about love and romance. How does that even get how is that saved in the digital age . I think its promoted in the digital age. Our own editor in chief found his wife through match.
