Welcome back. Lets get a check on the day ahead before we toss it over to morning joe. Security officials are expected to update the House Homeland Security committee on the threat posed by. A statue of the former arizona senator Barry Goldwater will be dedicated in the statuary hall. That will do it. Morning joe 80s starts right now. 17 years is the longest i have ever in my life held a job by 16 years and five months in my heart i know it is time for
someone else to have that opportunity and, no no no im not going to be here and try and sum up what this place has meant to me over the years. I couldnt do that. We have too much time. I have a myriad of people to thank. We will get to that over a period of time. Im not going anywhere tomorrow. But this show doesnt deserve an even slightly restless host and neither to do you. I dont think i will miss being on television every day. I will miss coming here every day. Its hard to describe exactly what happened yesterday evening in terms of american popular culture. Two of the most popular people in Television News two of the most most well bound, two most well liked, two most well respected men both in their own ways stepped down. We will be talking about our good friend brian in a minute. Le dropped the bomb shell, jon stewart that nbc news also dropped a bombshell announcing jon, ae nouceing he may be stepping down from the extremely popular and hugely influential daily show. It was one of the mo jar developments in the world with a knife, it was incredibly surprising news of two of those most powerful people in broadcasting. Of course, mica sadly, the other involves our friend Brian Williams. Well this past weekend Brian Williams followed criticisms and questions where he said he made a mistake surrounding the experiences in the iraqi war if 2003. Well, today that suspension is no longer self imposed. Nbc news decided yesterday to suspend williams as managing
editor of the anchor of the nightly news for six months without pay. The suspension is Effective Immediately. Lester holtz will continue to anchor the newscast. In a memo they said quote, while on nightly news on friday, january 30 2015 brian misrepresented events which occurred while he was covering the iraq war if 2003. It then became clear that on other occasions, brian had done the same while telling that story on other venues. This was wrong and completely inappropriate for someone in brians condition. In addition, we have concerns about comments that occurred outside nbc news while brian was talking about his experiences in the field. As managing editor and anchor of nightly news, brian has the responsibility to be truthful and uphold the high standards of the News Division at all times. We felt it would have been wrong to disregard the good work brian
has done and the special relationship he has fornld over two years millions of americans have turned to him every day. He has been an important and well deserved part of our organization t. Ceo steve burke added this message. This has been a painful period for all concerned and we appreciate your patience while we gather the available facts. By his action brian has jeopardized the trust of millions of americans placed on nbc news. His actions are inexcusable. This suspension is severe and appropriate brians life work is delivering the news. He know he loves his country, nbc news and his colleagues. He deserves a Second Chance wind chill rerooting for him. Brian has shared his deep remorse with me. He is committed to winning back everyones trust. In a statement to staffers after his self imposed sanction over the weekend, before jeds suspension, williams says when
he returns, he would quote continue my yearlong effort of my trust with those who place their trust in us. The sixmonth suspension follows the debunking of his story of riding in a helicopter hit with rbg fire exposed to fiction by the pilots who actually were on the damaged aircraft. It was a story he repeated several times, including during the appearance on the late show with David Letterman in 2013. We were going to drop some bridge portions across the you frats so the 3rd infantry can cross on them. Two of our four helicopters were hit. By ground fire including the one i was in. No kidding . Rpg and ak47. On sunday maureen dowd used her powerful column to claim williams a had a long ristory of inflateing his resume and gave sherman, saying williams lobbied toive go him the host chair on
the tonight show when jay leno stepped down a few years ago. So, we have clarity. We do we do. I can say around this building i think everybody was toned by the announcement you knew something was going to be done and something was going to be done. I think because brian was such a fixture and you see a decade of brians work at as nightly news anchor it is hard to imagine this quick of a turn. In the statements from nbc news the statements from steve burke, debra and steve burke made it very clear that their priority at this time is protecting n bbc news above all else. What is so interesting for people that read steve burkes comments. Yet, steve burke has a very Good Relationship with Brian Williams who likes Brian Williams very much personally. They are close and at the beginning, many people inside this building were speculating that brian would actually get through this a bit better than he did because of his close relationship with steve burke. Steve burke puts the Company First and puts the reputation of the News Division first but six months without pay leaves people to ask whether brian will ever come back. I think it will be another chapter. I dont even what it will be. I have been through a few of
these. The difference here for whatever its worth is that brian is not arguing the truth of this relationship and he is the first to say or to echo what debra and steve has said. He has completely put it out there, he made a huge mistake. There is no argue t. Professional as steve burke said yesterday inexcusable. You cant do these things. You cant host any show and some of the things he said done or said hes done. The other side though is the personal side which is very sad. It just is to watch a guy as a kid. He says he recognized he was a bit of a nerd. He would sit there and watch Walter Cronkite and say i want to be that guy when i grow up. He reached those heights. He achieved those things. Now its taken away from him for six months and possibly forever. So there is while its appropriate professionally. There is certainly a sadness to it certainly. A real sadness. You know what Brian Williams is a young guy and i define a young guy in a decade, but my age. A decades old. The new definition. He is still a young kid here and i can guarantee you this regardless of he does it inside this building or outside the building. This is the ent of one chapter in Brian Williams career. When i said forever. This job. No question. He will find something. I was thinking that what he did is wrong he said it was wrong. The news staff said it was wrong everybody said it was wrong. It was wrong. But i have never seen on twitter, online such a gleeful display of sheer hatred and new yorkiness and snideness and my 20 years in public life. I think while what steve burke did is completely inline. I do think the reaction by brians critics have been have lost perspective about the second day of this crisis. Were going to the next story. But the New York Times. There was a statement that said it was like the apocalypse last night. The New York Times headline williams suspended the point of his career. Stewart at the high point what again, mica a remarkable few
hours last night not only in the media landscape but in the Cultural Landscape of many earthquake. Actually i found it fascinating on a number of levels what he will do next is interesting but he created a whole new platform of telling stories and putting them into perspective. The of the of the daly show, jon stewart made that announcement he will step down this year. He took over from Craig Killborn turning it into the Gold Standard for comedy and criticism of news launching a new genre of television. They have long lost tips for politician, pundits and the press. Last night he addressed his audience. I love the people here. Theyre the best. Theyre creative and collaborative and kind and its
ill lit rative. Its cheating. Its a k. You understand what i am saying. I love and respect them so much ugh. Ugh. What is this fluid . You get from this business with the idea that maybe you have a point of view and have something to express and to receive feedback from that is the greatest feeling you can ask for and i thank you. I dont have any specific plans. I have a lot of ideas. I have a lot of things in my head. I will have dinner on a school night with my family who i have heard from multiple sources are lovely people. I connect with that one. Stewart could be fightingly funny but at times turn serious
including when a grand jury close not to indict a new York City Police officer over the death of erick garner. I dont know. I honestly den know what to say. If comedy is tragedy plus time i need more [ bleep ] time but i would really settle for less [ bleep ] tragedy, to be honest with you. Dam, we are definitely not living in a post situational society. I know there are many out there wondering how many are living in a society at all . Thats our show. Cha cha cha. Ah. Yes, sometimes you cant do it. Alumni of the show have gone on to some of the biggest roles in tv and movie. The show has won 20 emmys and has been nominated 56 times during his ten nur lets bring in the los angeles times. Well hello. Good morning. Thats what its done. This is what you look like. As these things happen almost simultaneously. The Brian Williams situation is obviously much more shock. Its so sudden. I broke the story on brian signing a new contract with nbc news a few weeks ago this was something the network didnt think they would have to worry about for years, this was a solid thing they could build on and perhaps turn around other parts of the news edition. Jon stewart not surprising to me. It was, as the contract was up this year. He had been doing this for 17 years. Yes he went off. These are our jobs. This is a life when you do Something Like this you are always thinking about the next show. You are always thinking about writing the next gag. Yeah something kind of nice about the way he is going out. We are accustomed to serving long goods byes from our late night host whether David Letterman, whether its jay leno. Viewers want that victory lap. They provide a real consistency in their lives. For jon stewart, the influence is really tremendous when you think about it. 17 years ago no one was having a social commentary on television with some of the humor you would see on the weekend update on saturday night live. That was about it. That topic was considered especially for young audiences. Now you have a generation that has been raised with this. I was always i never believed these surveys as they said that most young people got their news from jon stewart. Then you talk to every young person you ask them where do
you get your music these days . Thats the first show they mention. Its remarkable. That would be strongly anecdotal evidence. Even if we dont want to believe it. Lets talk about jon stewart is the guy most of us in life get on that train. We know we have to stay on that train. We dont get off. You have to stay on and keep working, working, work jon stewart as you were saying to me before the show he can go out and play parcheese for the next six months come back and take any job anywhere. He really could. After he takes a break and wants to do something weekly instead of daily and wants to do a series of specials his acts can pick up the phone and call pretty much every network and
they will Brian Williams i was surprised about who things into this Brian Williams case. Okay how many of you love Brian Williams . How many people loved him . Every where willie went everywhere mica went he was constant. Like everywhere. They talked about him as a member of the family. The longer it went i was surprised by everybody going, eh he probably needs to step down i still believe there is so much good will built up from a decade of reporting. People not only nightly news but elsewhere this is another guy. He really connected with the audience. Some people think that one reason he got in trouble. He went on late night talk shows so much. He is so funny. He is a great storyteller. When you go on talk shows and tell stories its about telling good stories and getting the facts right. It is one of the demands today of being a Television News personality is you have to be a certain personality. I think that may have gotten him in trouble. As far as the second act, its hard to say. Six months is a long time. You are right, people will like him whenever you ask people about the nbc nightly news they say he when talking about him. It was his show. It was that of the connection with the anchor that made the show number one. Heart breaking. All right. We have a lot more news to cover. Still ahead on morning joe, we remember Kayla Mueller, the aide worker who paid the ultimate
price for helping others. We will go live to keir simmons in georgia. Bob corker senator Claire Mccaskill and bob woodward plus David Axelrod has surprising revelations in his new book about a time in politics. He joins us ahead. You were asking during the break. Two things. One is the juxtaposition, jon stewart after 16plus years could have stepped down at any time, the fact that he did it was there a connection . The new jersey guy that apparently spent time together. I heard about he and springstein
and jon stewart walking on the beach down the jersey shore, but its hard to not think that jon stewart did this as a favor to Brian Williams. And if so that is a very very good trend. We should all have such a trend. I would say the same for you. I would certainly do the same for you. Do you think the meanness of this . Heres possibly jon stewart doing something for his friend. All these people never knew Brian Williams the sheer hierarchy and the newspapers what did Brian Williams ever do . Im sure thats a question that brian is asking himself, because, you know i had talked to brian when we first moved up to town with him and we were talking and he was saying you know, i say, have you so many
more people watch your show. We were talking for a reason that im not going to get into right now. We were just trying to figure some stuff out, whether, you know whether i should do a certain interview or fought. He said yeah what you do you have to go on the air every day and you are paid to give an opinion. You talk politics and basically no matter what we say. I can say right now the president gave a great speech and half the people would hate me even if i was playing bad analyst, right . Or i can say the president let america down and the other half would hate me we engage if opinions so much here that that is a lightning round. Thats unfortunately, i say to my family that has to read a lot of the gore baseball out there. Thats the price, im an analyst, would it be easier to be football analysts . Yes, it would. We are political analysts. Brian williams was a news reporter. He read the news. He did it straight and he did it well mica the fact that he did it so straight really does raise the question of the level of hatefulness and where that putrid well rose up from again was so out of proportion. I at first was horrified by the media pileon. But j just having very small bad experiences, leaving getting fired, whatever its a mean business. Im not surprised. It is a mean tough, cut throat
nasty business we work in. Unfortunately, its a mean world. Its a mean world online. We were talking not just trolls on twitter, but also people that run news organizations, saying some really ugly things. I was not surprised in the criticism of what he did and the things he did that was right and appropriate to point that out and to suggest he should be punished for it. To be so personal. You and i know editors of magazines tweeting terrible things about him. I think part of it too, is resentment from people on top. Hes the number one for ten years. Hes a happy guy. Hes the funniest guy in the room. He has a famous daughter a great wife, a great life. I think people like to see someone come down as a sickness a reality. All right. We have a lot of other news to cover. The president is asking congress to approve military force in the
night against isis it would not last longer than three years new reports say 20,000 foreign fighters have now joined forces with isis in iraq and syria. Many from the west. Have you seen that tweeting . The Associated Press reporting 20,000 foreign fighters now flooding into the zone . Now flooding thestone fight isis. Meanwhile the worst fears have been realized for those that new and love the young aide worker capturestured in syria. Kayla mueller, yesterday kaylas family and friends gave an emotional tribute. Things that were important to kayla are finally getting the athings they deserve. Reporter she was just 26yearsold but Kayla Mueller had already devoted a lifetime to helping others comforting those afflicted by war and
famine. I am in solidarity with the syrian people. I reject the brutality and killing the syrian authorities are committing against the syrian people. She grew up in prescott arizona, kayla left for college with high hopes of changing the world. She has done more in her incredible 26 years than many people could ever imagine doing in their lifetime. She traveled to india and israel helping the less fortunate there. In august of 2013 she was leaving a Doctors Without Borders hospital in syria headed for turkey. But before she made it to the bus station, kayla was abducted. It would be almost a year before her parents even received proof tear daughter was alive. We have been praying and talking about isis and doing it in a way in regards to kaylas situation. The mulers have stayed
silent pleading with the International Press and the press community to keep their daughters name out of the newspaperssh hoping that would keep her alive. There was the attempt to rescue her. But when u. S. Special forces arrived, she and three other captors were gone. On friday, the world finally learned who Kayla Mueller was. Yesterday, a girl even in captivity tried to make peace with the guards that imprisoned her. Kayla tried to teach the guards crafts to make origami, the peace cranes she would stand on her head. Kayla mueller, the will to live and the drive to help others in the face of evil. On behalf of the people of arizona and the United States congress i want to express the deepest condolences to kaylas
parents. She wrote i see something good in every situation. Thats right now what we are all trying to do. The family released a handwritten letter in her time in captivity where she reassures her family she is safe and unharmed. She writes with the thought of her loved ones sends her into a bit of tears adding quote, if you could say i have suffered at all throughout this experience its only knowing how much suffering i have put you all through. I will never ask you to forgive me as i do not deserve your forgiveness. She signed the letter all my everything. She wrote, please be patient and this letter i have never seen such exstrard 94 Character Built in a let ever. Its hard to imagine. We have grimss from others in
captivity that they were enduring day in, day out. Even in that hehh the only thing she wanted to do is bring comfort to her parents. She wrote this some people gooind find god if church. Some people find god if nature. Some people find god if love. I find god in suffering. I have known for some time. What lifes work is. Using my hands as tools to alleve suffering. Its a beautiful letter. Everybody ought to read it. Lets go with cheer simmonskeir simmons, he joins us live from amman, jordan. Whats the latest there . Reporter it feels like there are waves of pain that are sent
around the world over and over again, another innocent person is killed by that organization and this country was already grieving for the death of the pilot who was so horrifically killed by them. I guess there is a renewed task at hand at tackling this that an analyst on the war on iraq could number 200,000. Thats much higher than u. S. Intelligence estimates and it gives you a sense of the size of the task ahead they are continuing the air raids, will it be the iraqi army. That leads that . Are they up to that . Kir, one question obviously out there is whether kayla actually was killed in a bombing run by the jordanians . Most governments i heard speak out just dont believe thats true and believe the biggest problem for isis pay be the possible torturing and murdering of this young lady. Theyre trying to pin it on the jordanians what are they saying in jordan . Well, the commander of the air force told me some days ago he believed those isis claims to be live of course the pentagon is saying the point of isis is whatever the manner of her death was. We dont know what has happened to isis in the photograph of her family. She does apparently look like she has suffered trauma wound that wouldnt be consistent with an explosion of a remember no. Who knows where that bomb might have come from. Isis is impossible to know. We may never know conclusively how she died. Again the message the people terrible for her death. Isis. Kei ri simmons, we appreciate it. Richard haase 20,000 troops foreign fighters certainly that news by the Associated Press will certainly come into play in the dewitt over this authorization i heard i believe Lindsey Graham speaking out for the possibility of 10,000 boots on the ground and the debate begins. I want to ask you for the generals, for the Foreign Policy experts you have spoken with what do they believe the best move is . There are Something Like 20,000 people, it means an
enormous problem in syria and an enormous problem if and when these people go home. This debate over this authorization, you will need a large ground force it is going for to be a modest force. Define modest in the opinions of the experts you have spoken with the generals admirals the military men and women, Something Like 5,000 . Probably the lower end of that. The real question is if you can get the ten or 20,000 arabs on the ground the turks, the ua, whether they are prepared to take these guys on the ground. Militarily you need to have a sunni based force to do this. We can help them. If its the United States and the shia fighting the sunnis. Its a to go. We have Jeremy Peters who has reported and witnessed in the times the use of force on the front page jeremy what have you learned . There will be three major issues as Congress Debates what president obama asks for, the first of which is that the president wants to leave in place this post911 authorization to pursue the perpetrators of the 911 attack. A lot of people want to get rid of it. The second is this no limits on the geographical boundaries of the conflicts. What lawmakers are concerned about is that this could turn into a sprawling borderless war t. White house has asked for that. That shows this conflict could spread into jordan and they feel being constrained by borders
would hampen their efforts. The third Sticking Point is probably the biggest one that is this prohibition in this draft resolution on an enduring Ground Combat operation. Thats an incredibly vague operation. Who knows how that could be interpret. A lot of people fear that can create escalation. He has a minute of a decade, David Axelrod joins us next. I have a grandchild now too. The young whippersnapper. Ageing teen star. David last fight you were a part of broadcast history. It will be easy to keep on doing this but i know its time doing other things. He particularly emphasized spending time with his family and the time i lost my family because of politics. So i was very sympathetic. The book is called the believer as we said before. The subtitle that you wanted is the subtitle that talked about how your idealism survived. Typical age cynical business. Yeah. It was interesting, i listened to your discussion earlier with britain and the advisors atyveracity
of the attack. Generally the media is involved in these attacks. There is a lot of cynicism about politics, which i understand i have seen a lot of good things happen, people put their shoulder to the wheel and move history forward. My interest in politics ga gab in this town. Jfk came to summon people to move or turn the wheel of history and, you know, i have always believed that. Did you find it difficult, david, to write this book and reveal some of the things you reveal. People have seized on for example the president s position on gay marriage and cynically and for political reasons he didnt reveal the way he felt about it . Is that hard . What you regret is people take it out of context and the
cast is cynical. He was unwavering in his view that there should be equal rights. He tried to square that with the Civil Union Proposal. He was increasingly frustrated with having to take up position and ultimately said to us hey, im not saying that. Come on. Thats what cynicism im talking about, joe. I was there. Cynical. Few want to. Dont listen to Joe Scarborough. If you want the whole story. Its right here in this book. Obviously. You talk about the president. What in your time with family. What is the biggest misconsession that you see

Yesterday was a remarkable day in american popular culture, two of the most well known broadcasters not only in america but across the world stepping dourn. David axelrod back with us. From the editor and chief of Buzzfeed Ben Smith who sat down with the president yesterday in a wide ranging interview, first mica and willie big, big news coming out of Nbc Universal as well. Obviously, Comedy Central yesterday. Both surprises for different reasons. I was sitting at dinner i felt the buzz in my phone. First jon stewart stepped away from the john daly show a. Few minutes later, i come across the phone, Brian Williams was suspended for six months without pay. Two of the best known and best liked guys in the media. He is paying for it now. But there is as we said before an element of sadness to it. An element of surprise mica willie, inside the building i said earlier, certainly people i talked to did not expect a sixmonth extension without pay. That was strong that was tough. Also, that was steve burke sending a message. Absolutely. And he did what he had to do i think the surprise we see so close to the story and we genuinely see Brian Williams who doesnt . I think our management have a lot of time having to make this decision. Because he is a genuinely good and likable person and it hurts. Willie steve burke along with Debra Furness put tes statements out and there was no fact that steve had brian and liked him an awful lot. There were speculations in the building that brian actually might not get hit with that
tough of a suspension as he got hit with yesterday. That might not happen because steve burke liked him personally so much steve burke showing what a lot of great leaders show which is the Organization First and its protecting my people first and even if i have to make a tough decision about somebody who is close to me ive always got to keep in mind that its nbc news and its the people that work here who are his number one priority. I dont think its any secret that britain an steve have a pretty good and close relationship. He called his actions inexcusable. His harsh language in the News DivisionDeborah Burnett said things along the same line and said things are unacceptable which of course it is. Even if you are Brian Williams there is no exception. All right. So here it is. We will lay it out for you what happened. Nbc news decided yesterday to
suspend Brian Williams as managing editor of the anchor of nbc nightly news for six months Effective Immediately and without pay. The suspension follows criticism and questions after williams onair apoll said he made a mistake recalling the events covering the iraq war in 2003. In a memo nbc news president said quote, while on nightly news on friday january 30 2015, brian misrepresented events which occurred while he was covering the iraq war in 2003. It then became clear that on other occasions, brian had done the same while telling that story. This was wrong. In addition, we have concerns about comments that occurred outside nbc news while brian was talking about his experiences in the field. As managing ed toured and anchor of nightly news, brian has the responsibility to be truthful
and uphold the high standards of the News Division at all times. We felt it would have been wrong to disregard the good work brian has done and the special relationship he has formed with our viewers over 22 years. Millions of americans have turned to him every day and he has been an important and well respected part of our organization. The ceo of nbc universe am steve burke, added this message. This has been a painful period for all concerned and we appreciate your patience while we gather the available facts. By his actions, brian has jeopardized the trust of millions of americans that they place on nbc news. His actions are inexcusable and this suspension is severe and appropriate. Brians lifes work is delivering the news. I know brian loves his country. Nbc news and his colleagues. He deserves a Second Chance and we are rooting for him. Brian has shared his deep remorse with me and he has committed to winning back everyones trust. In a statement to staffs after his self imposed suspension over the week but before yesterdays suspension, williams said that when he returns, he would quote continue my careerlong effort to be worthy of the trust of those who played their trust in us. The six month suspension follows the debunking of the story of riding in a helicopter hit with rpg fire exposed as fiction by the pilots who were actually on the damaged aircraft. It was a story that he repeated several times, including during an appearance on the late show with David Letterman in 2013. We were going to drop some bridge portions across the euphrates so the 3rd infantry could cross on them. Two of our helicopters were hit by ground fire including the one i was in. No kidding . Rpg and aq47s. So on sunday maureen dowd used her powerful column to quote sources claiming williams has a long history of inflateing his resume and new York Magazine
reports williams lobbied nbc executives to give him the host chair on the tonight show. David axelrod, you obviously began your career in newspaper, there were not many networks. There were one or two that seemed to wal low in this an awful lot. Every network. Every newspaper has this happen to them. Whether its the New York Times or cbs news or the Washington Post or you know even cnn when they were trying to report on this story. They got soccered into a guy lying about being a helicopter pilot with Brian Williams. It unfortunately is something that happened in news when you news gather especially 24 7. A newspaper man. I think the media is getting the treatment that other public features usually get. You know there are habits of the news media now to pounce on these stories and brian wasnt exempt from that. You know i like everyone around here, i have great affection for him. Great respect for him. Its a sad, sad story. Its hard for me to see reading that statement how it end well. But when he says were rooting for brian, i dont know what that means, you know. We shall see. Richard haase, you said while the statement is being read you thought they threaded the needle perfectly, steve burke and deborah. You cant repeat the news at the same time. It may see precipitous. We may do more investigation and as Robert Macnamara says it buys you time. Now, mica on the daly
show, jon stewart had a surprising announcement that hes going to step down from his Signature Program later this year. Stewart took over the Comedy Central 16 years ago and criticism of the news gathering. He and his staff often unearthed long lost quests to point out hip pock chriss and pundits in the press. Last night he addressed his audience. I love the people here. Theyre the best. Thatry creative and collaborative and kind and thats lit ratively cheating. Its with a k. You understand what i say, i love them and respect them so much. We love you, jon oh. What is this fluid . You get in this business with the idea you have a point of view and something to express and to receive the feedback from that is the greatest feeling can you ask for and i thank you. I dont have any specific plans, i got a lot of ideas i got a lot of things in my head. Ly have dinner on a school night with my family who i have heard from multiple sources are lovely people. I think a lot of us. We can relate to that. It can be invitingly funny. At times turned serious when they decided not to indict a new york Police Officer over the death of erick garner. I dont know i honestly dont know what to say. If comedy is fabulous, i need more time. I would settle for less tragedy to be honest with you. Dam. We are definitely bought the living in a postgeneration society. I can imagine how many people in a society we are living in at all . Thats our show. So chop chop chop. A lineup have the biggest roles in the tv and on movies. Stephen colbert. John oliver. The show has won 20 emmys and nominated 56 times during his tenure. Joining us now, hollywood reporters mellissa guthrie who is chiming in on this. What do you think . I think its the end of an era. It was real news. And it was delivered with humor and insight and a lot of irony. As you noted, he really did
expose the pip pockcracy exhypocrisy of the news media. It will leave a whole for Comedy Central. Theyve lost a lot of people lately. The boom boom the two announcements coming one after another. Its the broadcast news goes popular culture, its hard to think of a parallel of two huge public physicals in media, both acquitted, are leaving their posts like this. Yeah i mean, its a big hole. Look, even brians loss is a big hole for nbc news. I think jon stewart is not to diminish brians career but more important to Comedy Central. He really is the face of that higher network. Dont toerth his show bond all
the other shows arnold him. The colbert show and they lost john oliver who could have been an heir as we seen from his hbo show and the time filling in when stewart was away he could have taken on that show and not missed a boat. So they have their work cut out for them now. Marissa guthrie. Thank you very much. I want to ask you, there is always sort of eyerolling among news gatherers and people say i wish the young kids get their news from jon stewart and stephen colbert. What did you find . You were in the best to know what was influential . As you were talking, it was being to me these were treated at twin stories. These were two force not just american politics and public discussion. Jon stewart was incredibly influential and is particularly
with young people not exclusively with young people and shows how the media environment has changed so dramatically t. Fact that you are about to talk to ben smith from buzzfeed spoo exto the fact we are in a much different media environment and jon stewart was equally important. Maybe more important and influential even the chief anchor of nbc news. The media environment baik became huge with this universe with the onset of the internet and what jon stewart did is something we talk about a lot. He found an incredible pocket where he could appeal to peoples intelligence, the fake news the news you can get in the form of comedy. He got that viewers could get his votes, he thinks we are intelligent enough. You dont have to package it in a certain way. Also it was funny this past weekend, i was home and had a couple free seconds. So i went to see what shows i
want to go back and look at and bounce them around and i couldnt find anything in particular. Then i saw the daly show. I knew i could pop on the show and be entertained for 30 minutes. Like i said earlier, sometimes you make things harder than we can make them. The fact is jon stewart is an extraordinary entertainer. Hes also a brilliant guy as well. Its pure sear talent. I mean hank aaron was great for a lot of different reasons. Hank aaron was great because hank aaron was great and jon stewart, no matter what hes going to do he is going to succeed, because hes an incredible entertainer. Kind of the mark twain of our time. He brought his humor to serious issues and focus peoples attention with that. He did. Hes like the mark twain of our time. I cant do that sideways. Ben smith. I bring you back in here. An interview with president obama. What was your big take away if you would like we request get you the park twain straw hat while you respond. I thank you for your work on that. I think you saw the president was very who by the way is on the tour of new media outlets. We saw that. I think you can see how combative he is surrounding a legacy he is starting to shape, including picking a bone we are counting an anecdote around same sex marriage and supporting this same sex marriage and very very combative about the retailer staple trying to limit employee hours in a way they wont qualify for the Affordable Care act. Obama went after him very hard shame on you, i wonder what the ceo compensation was, which i
found pretty striking. So the president with you, with others hes untethered isnt he . I mean hes got two years left. Hes going to do whatever for the most part what he wants to do and say . I think he will do what he can. The other thing that struck me. He is feeling his limits. At one point asked him about why marriage . Why gay rights activists are so satisfied in the way environmentalists and others arent . He said some of these are easier to do than oughts. Marriage is easier than solving inner city poverty. I think its trend setting. David, do you sense by watching that he really does i dont know untethered is the right word. I think he has more bounce in his step than ive seen in years. I think hes more enthused. More charged up. He sees the possibility of getting some things down and using the platform to raise issues that need to be raised for the future. Hes in a very
good place right now. Thank you so much. Its interesting. He was thinking about doing the interview in a bathtub. Oh really . Its very difficult negotiations of the white house. They do not want to go with the privilege. All right. Thank you so much. David axelrod. Thank you. Buy this book. Thank you. We appreciate it david. Coming up we got the chairman of the senate Foreign Relations committee, senator corker a lot of really tough questions to answer on this authorization of force and exactly what the president and congress can agree to on how to fight and defeat isis. Also, we are excited to have the Senate Armed Services committee, senator Claire Mccaskill. Hitting on senator press secretary john kirby. Richard haase is with us. You are watching morning joe. Well be right back. At ally bank no branches equals great rates. Its a fact. Kind of like shopping hungry equals overshopping. [ male announcer ] legalzoom has helped start over 1 million businesses. Attorney in manhattan is taking keen interest in why Governor Cuomo shut down the Ethics Commission. Yesterday we spoke about this. Steve ratner was a part of that conversation and steve and actually the Governors Office called to remind us to remind you that steve was in a pitched battle with andrew cuomo. When he was attorney general of the state of new york but now lets bring in chris smith. Chris, you have written about right now whats happening for new York Magazine read about whats happening with the governor. Is the governor in trouble . In one sense, politically, certainly legally to be determined, Sheldon Silver a
longrunning head of the fork States Assembly was arrested a couple weeks ago, charged with five felony corruption counts. It doesnt seem like u. S. Attorney is satisfied with that that but what does that have to do with the governor . Well the governor launched something essentially an Ethics Commission and shut it down after he said it has done what he wanted it to do. But he had gun it before the commission started, right . Right. What the New York Times and a lot of other folks have detailed is that the governor and his after the had a lot of influence on who the commission subpoenaed. Where their investigations were going. The governor says this is all proper and above board. What the u. S. Attorney seems to
be looking into is whether it was for sheldon and others. How do you prove that though . Yeah, that itself the hard part. What is illegal, what is politics . To the governor when he was attorney general and other folks used every lever available to them to arm twist, to pressure. He says thats the Governor Andrew Cuomo says thats all that was going on here he wasnt protecting anybody. Getting rid of this commission, what is the other side of this . What is the politics of this if there is one . You know the politics for cuomo right now are bad because he spent last year wrestling with this commission with a lot of headlines. He wants to focus on school reform. Now he is back talking about
corruption. What do they think happening here . Is it being unfairly targeted . Well they believe that to put it simply is criminalizing a lot of what is just politics you know you can argue for a long time that albany and a lot of states should have tougher ethics laws and Campaign Donation laws. They say they are playing by the rules as they exist. Thats what bob mcdonald said in virginia. He was playing by the rules in the state of virginia. But it does seem like the line is moving here. Cuomo was pounded last year the governor was pounded last year. He still ended up winning. Fairly easily. And i wonder here whether we got more smoke than fire. You know what i thought was interesting, ari melber did a good interview in which there was a line the u. S. Attorney said the shutdown of the moral
commission. I dont have it wordforword was not necessarily wrong. Right. Babe i maybe thats a head fake. Maybe hes loe trying to lower expectations to some extent . Maybe he doesnt have anything on the governor. If he says the shutting down was not necessarily wrong and the investigation of that served up before the commission was launched, itself and we certainly have an argument from the Governors Office there is a lot of smoke, no fire. Coming up hes gone from the bfiles to a talking cow. David duchovney joins us to explain this career leap. An actual segue. kayla. As sad as her legacy and the footpresent she leaves on the world, then that is a wonderful thing. That was the aunt of the american aide worker Kayla Mueller. Joining us from washington. Surprise winning associate editor of the Washington Post bob woodward. Good to have you on the show. Thank you for being with us. The president of the United States has said he was going to destroy, he was going to degrade and he was going to defeat isis if that is what his presidency is being scored on today, what kind of grades are you giving . There are some good things coming on in war and bad things t. Really big question is why are we worried about isis . Why is this different than some of the other problems in the middle east . And the answer is isis is a recruiting machine. They have 9,000 to 15,000
fighters on a daily basis and they are recruiting hundreds of people a month and what they do they go to somebody young who doesnt have a job or is looking for a life and they say, look we will give you three things a gun, a little bit of money and we will promise you a wife and to somebody who has no mooreings, no place to really live no focus in their lives, thats very very appealing. So you are going to get growth of this movement rather than shrink annual. Its growing very quickly. You actually made news with your reporting. Of course, something you have been doing for a very long time. You reported that there is great frustration inside the pentagon. That generals and admirals were saying they were being micromanaged and they were in fact giving orders to generals. Tell us about that reporting. But there are people in the white house who and, of course their argument is this is the president s war, the commanderinchief needs to know what is going on they are conducting limited airstrikes six to 20 a day the white house says we want to be vivendi in that process from the perspective of the pittsburgh what exactly are we supposed to do . Get your finger out of our eyes. And jobs. But this is, there have been some successes here or temporary skees successes. There is no strategy right now. There is no strategy. Well i think everyone who looks at the realizes there is no strategy. Today the white house chief of
staff was up talking to the Senate Democrat yesterday saying we asked for a resolution and tried to define the war resolution effectively and define what were doing here. This will be a giant and there should if a giant day on this. This is the sheer power. This is a all of the, look at the iraq war and the Afghanistan War as we have talked about and tried to report on for years, no one has fixed out how do you do this in a way na solves the problem. Problem. So bob this has been a president elective and not engage us in new ones. You talk about the potential for a war authorization. What is the white house strategy thats different from our last engagements where we discuss an inpoint and out point . Well this is a group. Look. Obama is the antiwar president. Hes withdrawing and withdrawn from iraq to a certain extent. Now back in. He witched on isis because this is a brutal growing organization that has taken over for instance, the Northern Iraq city of mosul. Which is effective lyly their capital now. The idea that an organization can do this so quickly, you know get so much attention in the world with these beheadings and burnings and so forth. This is something that has to be addressed. And obama has at least on this
issue no longer the antiwar president. No, thank you so much. Good to see you. Up next we get the latest information on the fight and live from the pentagon. We will ask him about Bob Woodwards reporting. They are saying there is no strategy in the middle east. What is now . We have press secretary rear admiral john kirby. I didnt say admiral. It is so good to see you, buddy. John is fine. What a nice guy . Its a tough job. Its not fair. No. We should ask him about sports. But go there. We have to ask you, bob woodward is talking to people inside a building where you are. There were a lot of generals and admirals in rnlg cha whats your response from the pentagon . I certainly cant speak from the folks mr. Woodward talks to i tell you we believe we are making a huge impact. These guys are on a dovesive crouch. Theyre having trouble getting recruits. Theyre constriptcripting now. This is a group radically different than several months ago we believe that strategy is working. What can you tell us . Give us a sense something has developed in the past few months that is different . It is from a military
perspective now. This is a different strategy than military from our purpose in the pentagon its degrading their capability. Reducing their ability to maneuver and operate. How are we doing that . For one from airstrikes in the air. We have done it 12,000 strikes evenly hit. They have had a huge effect. Their communications were very much complaining about the pressure of the airstrikes reporting them under, over and around kobani. They had a huge impact on eventually kicking them out of there. The other component is ground pressure. They are already under the pressure in the north by peshmurga fighters in the north and their growing pressure by the Iraqi Security forces to the south and the east. One of the components of our strategy, a key component is making sure the Ground Forces are capable and confident to keep that pressure on. We are doing the training missions. One in the north. Three in the south. All right. Admiral, do you discount what they are reporting from the chief of the National Counterterrorism center saying the rate of foreign fighters going into the area to work with isis is unprecedented going on to say the rate of foreigners who went to wage jihad in pakistan, iraq or yemen or somalia in the last 20 years . I wouldnt get into intelligence, we certainly share the same sense of urgency and concern about the foreign fighter threat. There is no underestimateing here in the pentagon. We know this is an attractive ideology. They give these young men rifles, gun, money, promise them a wife a very attractive style of life for some of these guys. We know the foreign fighter threat is very very real. Another complaint bob woodward is reporting on it is micromanaged from the white house. Any comment on that . There is always a lot of
discussion between the pentagon and the white house and the state department. Thats the way the process works t. Stakes are very high right now. This is a threat as secretary hagel said unlike anything we have seen before. Not just al qaeda. These guys have governing ambition. They are very dangerous. The stakes are so high. You will imagine there will be a lot of coordination and communication between this building and other buildings in walk. Thats way the system is for. The latest on the u. S. Embassy in yemen, closing, what can you tell us about that . I think the state department put out a statement. They have temporarily relocated all their personnel, that would include military personnel. There are no u. S. Military personnel. I think i still have some reporting this morning that American Military personnel were still guarding the embassy complex. That is not true. All the military personnel are
out of there. Admiral, thank you so much. Good to be with you guys. Up next what inspired actor David Duchovney to write his first novel . He joins us next to explain. When salesman alan ames books his room at laquinta. Com, he gets a ready for you alert the second his room is ready. So he knows exactly when he can check in and power up before his big meeting. And when alan gets all powered up, ya know what happens . I think the numbers speak for themselves. Im sold hes a selling machine put it there. And there, and there, and there. La quinta inns and suites is ready for you, so youll be ready for business. The ready for you alert, only at laquinta. Com la quinta at ally bank no branches equals great rates. Its a fact. Kind of like mute buttons equal danger. That sound good . Not being on this phone call sounds good. Its not muted. Was that you jason . It was geoffrey it was jason. It couldve been brenda. You total your brand new car. Nobodys hurt, but there will still be pain. It comes when your Insurance Company says theyll only pay threequarters of what it takes to replace it. What are you supposed to do, drive threequarters of a car . Now if you had Liberty Mutual new car replacement, youd get your whole car back. I guess they dont want you driving around on three wheels. Smart. With liberty
mutual new car replacement, well replace the full value of your car. See Car Insurance in a whole new light. Liberty mutual insurance. How much money do you have in your pocket right now . I have 40 21. Could something that small make an impact on something as big as your retirement . I dont think so. Well if you start putting that towards your retirement every week and let it grow over time, for twenty to thirty years that retirement challenge might not seem so big after all. Im not going to let you go back out there. What are you talking about . It has to end sometime. That time is now. I was in the habit of never telling anybody anything about my past while i was falling in love with you. Every morning id wake up and think today is the day im going to tell her. Every morning id say nothing. Eventually, too much time passed. I was hoping if i told you now,
youd get scared and youd leave me. Denise i believe im being set up. Well my recent experience has taught me never to judge too quickly. Because if she loves you, shell forgive you. You believe that . I have to. Otherwise there is no point. There is no life without love. Not worth having anyway. Oh my lord we are looking at david and mica on cbs sunday morning. You said it was a bad decade. When was that . That was probably in the oh see, was his bad decade. Im thinking it might have been mine, and just so you know if you think, like the truth doesnt lie, he walked in here and he says nice to meet you. But then you go wait a second. I met new a park sometime. Come on. What . Great save. It was a great save. So david, a bad decade you said. Weve all had ive had about four bad decades, but thats another story, but a pretty good decade. Now, you picked up music. Holy cow. Youve got an album coming out an a book. Holy cow. Youre like the Tom Jefferson of the country. Renaissance, baby. Tell us how it all came about . It came to me about an animated film about ten years ago, even longer. I was driving in l. A. As you do constantly and the thought came to me if i were a cow, i would probably want to get to india . Really . Thats the this is a cow that wants to get to india and not end up ton a patty. I thought maybe one cow isnt enough to drive one novel i thought maybe other i thought
a pig myight want to get to judaism and it stopped being an animateded film soon as the pig got circumcised. Its interesting. Think about disney stuff. Its psychological different and violent. The mother and father really . Mothers always die. What is worse for a child to see . A mom getting killed in front of it or a pig getting circumcised . You just asked a question i ask myself every night before going to bed, and i think we have an answer now. But tell me why you know why did you decide to do it . Obviously, you had a must have had a great time . I did. Ive always ive always identified myself as a writer even though i havent writ than much. I wrote and directed one movie, but i thought, my father published his first novel at 73
and i always thought thats how i got into acting writing plays. I started beating myself up i dont write and i remembered this idea and it felt like there would be less pressure because it was kind of a young idea. Its like nothing let you ask a question thomas, first, a passage from chapter 12. Uncomfortably numb see, floyd, pink when i woke the middle child was milking me. I think im not going to go on. Thats Something Else joe likes to say before he goes to bed. Yeah. Exactly. Thomas hey if i had a dime for every time thomas the middle child got in there. Its not easy. For people that may know know this a masters in english from yale. When you wrote the book you said your kids are going to eat whether or not regardless people like it. Thats a great way to put it into the world. Kind of takes the pressure off. Very lucky. I mean i didnt have to tailor it to any kind of taste or any kind of i didnt have an audience in mind. Its a difficult book to classify because it has aspects of a childrens book, but its also its not adult themes. Drug use, political discussion. So if i had really had to make ends meet by writing i probably would have been steered towards making it one thing. So that i could get here and sell it and not have to have a fiveminute dissertation on what it is and what it isnt. I want to talk about your music in a second. Thank you. But youre a busy man. An album coming out, like i said. And the show. I got ask about this nbc show thats coming up. I didnt know when you were coming on you had an nbc show. We usually dont if somebody wants us to ask a question thats a good way to make sure we dont ask it. Im asking this question this looks like this is just an awesome one of those
fascinating times for me in pop culture. L. A. Sort of the doors, 67, 68, 69, and youre going to be right in the middle of it . Right. Talk about it. Well thats you know you couldnt have set me up any better for what i feel about the show and why i wanted to do it, because i think that you know as a country we keep coming back to the late 60s, because it was a time of a fork in the road. Right. And in the show i play a homicide detective about my age in the late 60s which means i was raised in the teens and the 20s. I am not a man of the 60s at all. Youre in the in the age of manson. The age of well no. Manson figures into the show prominently. What happens, an old girlfriend of mine not married to a well connected lawyer who works for nixon fundraiser. Her daughter 15 14 run away with the manson family before any of the murders. Before anybody knows the word
manson, and she asks me off the books to see if i can get her back. So i sgee mansons world and i am exposed to the 60s, a crash course in the 60s as a homicide detective. So fascinating about that one of my favorite moments in mad men was when the sharon taitte. Puts on a revolver goes straight to tomorrow never knows. Look the at it takes it off. I go hes a sinatra guy. No. A man out of time. Thats your character, also sounds, like a man out of town. I always looked at my parents and thought how disorienting it had to be for these conservative people you know from the 50s, having to deal with what your characters dealing with here . Exactly. Ill take you around when i talk about it joe. Youve got it town. Thats my rap. And what is great to me about the show is that i always felt
like, if you wanted to be really simplistic about it what we try to do is that america had these two paths that it could go down. One side wood schock other a lot mont the hells angels murder somebody and manson stands in the middle. Manse sn bake lif asically a greaser, not a hipper. He was in this 30s. Impersonating a hippie. He wanted to be a rock n roll star. They himself every choice every vector america could have followed, and look where he ended up and look where we ended up . Quickly, your album. Called hell our high water out in april. One of the fun, satisfying things ive ever been a part of. Come back when the album comes out. And jam. I cant play too well but i get my guitar so lets play
twin peaks coming back . Coming back for both . Im hoping. Okay. See you in another ten years and see if you recognize he. Uhoh. Thats fine. No, he didnt. Why is shes got a chip on her shoulder. Oh everybody. This is her being nice. David, thank you so much. Coming up next, republican senator bob corker on the debate on wages war with isis. And the pentagon shut down . The department of Homeland Security why she thinks thats a mistake when people are burned in jordan. In our 8 30 half hour she played betty in the successful series ugly betty aa. years in the longest i have ever in my life held a job by 16 years and 5 months. In my heart a know it is time for someone else to have that opportunity, and no im not gawk tooing to be here and sum up what this place has meant to me over the year but i couldnt do that and we have plenty of time and ive got myriad people of thank and well get to that over time. Im not going anywhere tomorrow. But this show doesnt deserve an even slightly restless host and neither to you. Neither do you. I dont think im going to miss being on television every day. Im going to miss coming here every day. I dont have any specific plans. Got a lot of ideas. I got a lot of things in my head. Im going have dinner. On a school night, with my family, who i have heard from multiple sources are lovely people. Welcome back to morning joe. Top of the hour. So much to talk about. Obviously, jon stewart yesterday, announcing he was stepping down. Brian williams yesterday suspended for six months in what many media observers are suggesting may be the end of his reign here at nbc nightly news. Also, of course, isis the battle continues. We have so much to talk about. You know mika over the past 24
hours weve had news streaming, and obviously over our phones in our computers, into our newsroom, and there are a lot of stories that people are going to talk about for quite some time. Ive got to say, in my house, something that i saw yesterday that is going to have a lasting im is not going to be the words that jon stewart spoke last night, even though they were eloquent the decision that steve burke and debra turness made even though it was a tough but just decision all good examples of thing, but as a young woman, and a young woman who wrote a letter while going through a living hell. 26yearold Kayla Mueller. Kayla mueller. Captured by isis and her parents had been holding out hope that she was still alive, but word came that she had,
indeed died. And she wrote a letter to them from prison. It said if you could say ive suffered at all throughout this whole experience it is only knowing in how much suffering i have put you all through. I will never ask you to forgive me as i do not deserve forgiveness. Of course her parents would never have needed her to ask for forgiveness, because they knew that kayla was doing what kayla committed her life to, but some of the things that she wrote from prison are as moving as anything that ive read, and i sent these out last night. Kayla wrote, some people find god in church. Some people find god in nature. Some people find god in love. I find god in suffering. Ive known for some time what my lifes work is and my lifes
work is using my hands as tools to relieve suffering. She went over to try to relieve suffering. She did her best. He committed her life to it and a couple of bible verses that come to mind if you know theres always people parading and preaching and yelling on television being selfrighteous, who at times just dont seem to reflect gods love, but you read the bible, and i just cant think of anybody that lived christs life more than kayla, when you look at verses like the one greater love hath no man than this that he lay down his life for his friends. Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. And the one that i put a hash tag of kayla after, because it seems to apply to her so much. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see god. And there is no doubt, if you believe, as i do and as many other people do right now, that is exactly right now remarkable woman. A remarkable family and just an extraordinary example to tall of us to all of us who the real heroes are. Not people that can throw balls, dance around on stage. Be famous just for the sake of being famous but for people who show character near the worst of adversity, and if character is what we do when nobodys watching then we all could use a lot of kayla in our life. I know i certainly could. She wrote this literally in the face of evil being held captive. It starts, she gave it to her cellmates, wrote everyone if youre receiving this letter it
means im still detained but my cellmates have been released and ive asked them to contact you and send you this letter. You see shes writ didnt out by hand and just to your point. This was in the face of evil in the face of despair, in the face of hopelessness and you hear the stories from her cellmates about her even finding a connection with those who were holding her and trying to live and finding the light and finding god. Yeah. I want to frame this letter. Im going to take it keep it forever. And take it home and let my kids see it every day. We have a lot to talk about. Lets start with some news out of this building. Nbc news decided yesterday, this has been Brian Williams managing editor. An anchors nbc nightly news six moss effect live immediately and without pay. The suspension follows criticism and questions an williams onair apology where he said he made a mistake recalling
events surrounding his experiences koevg the iraq war in 2003. In a memo nbc news president debra turness said in a note to my nbc staff, nbc news president Deborah Turness said while on nbc news nightly news brian misrepresented events which occurred while he was covering the iraq war in 2003. It then became clear that on other occasions brian had done the same while telling that story in other venues. This was wrong, and completely inappropriate for someone in brians position. She went on to say, this was a very hard decision. Certainly there will be those who disagree but we believe this suspension is appropriate and proportion action. The ceo of Nbc Universal, steve burke added this message. This has been a painful period for all concern and we appreciate your patience while we gathered available facts. By his actions, brian has jeopardized the trust of millions of americans, that they
place on nbc news. His actions are inexcusable and this suspension is severe and appropriate. Brians lifes work is delivering the news and i know brian loves his country, nbc news and his colleagues. He deserves a Second Chance and we are rooting for him. Brian has shared his deep remorse with me and he is committed to winning back everyones trust. Steve burke has very very warm feelings for Brian Williams to make that decision i know it had to be extremely tough for him, but he is a tough business guy who know its that he has to protect the people inside of this building first, and thats exactly what he did yesterday. Now, lets go to the daily show. Host jon stewart had a really surprising announcement last night he was going to step down from a program that has had such an extraordinary impact on american popular culture. Jon stewart took over comedy sentra from craig kilborn, and turned it into a gold record for
comedy and news and launched a new genre of television. He and his staff often unearthed long lost clips to point out politicians and pundits in the press. Last night he addressed his audience. I love the people here. Theyre the best. They are creative and collaborative and kind, and thats illiterative and cheating because its a k, but you understand what im saying. I love them and respect them so much. We love you, jon yeah [ cheers and applause ] anyway anyway, what is this fluid . What are these feelings . You get in this business with the idea that maybe you have a point of view and something to express, and to receive feedback from that is the greatest feeling you can ask for, and i thank you. Thats jon stewart, of
course, much to come. Joining us from capitol hill to talk about isis the chairman of the senate Foreign Relations committee, republican bob corker of tennessee. Bob, thank you so much for being with us. We apologize. A lot of news to cover. Im the first to admit, kaylas letter was so moving started reading it hard to stop. You were moved by that story. John mccain on the floor tearing up. Ah. Senator, more importantly, mr. Chairman a lot of americans are trying to figure out what our strategy is on isis. The president said he was going to destroy, degrade isis. Bob woodward reporting this morning on the show that the generals in the pentagon say they dont see a strategy there. Whats the view on the hill . Let me start with kayla. I mean obviously, an extraordinary young woman who represents all thats good in this world, and isis. Isil, daesh, whatever you want to call them all thats bad. Thats really what this is all
about. Isnt it . Today at 9 00 the president will send over his seeking of an authorization for the use of military force, and thats the first step. Thats the tradition step where the president sends over and seeks that. That puts it over in the legislative cord, and so now this is oversight. This is what we do here. So over the course of the next period of time joe what well be doing is seeking to understand what strategy the white house and the administration has to deal with isil. Thats a very Important Role for us. Chairman, do you agree with Bob Woodwards reporting and generals in the pentagon there does not seem to be a Clear Strategy to defeat this evil force . It is very difficult to understand what the pathway to success is, but, joe, look again, this is the first step. I think all of us understand the importance of this. Its the most important vote that any senator or house member takes, and so now its our turn and in a measured way, to walk
through this and to have testimony from the administration. The president sell this to the american people, but for us to really tease that out and, joe this is a chance for to us have an impact on how we move ahead in iraq but especially in syria where all of us understand that at present there is no real ground game. There really is no pathway. Today were really speaking of a strategy of containment. What we can hope to do is to shake this in a different way so the thing that happened to kayla and has happened to so many other does not happen again, or at least we move in a direction to eliminate that threat. All right. Senator, thank you so much for being with us. We really do appreciate it. And we hope to see you on the hill. Thank you, yes, sir. Good luck. Joining us now a member of the Armed Services and Homeland Security committee senator Claire Mccaskill of missouri. Claire, good to see you. Good to see you guys. Start with the department of Homeland Security. It really at this point, really an issue . Is it in jeopardy . I think the thing to remember here, if you think about what happened to kayla and what happened to other contractors and what happened in paris, we need to be sending a very clear, united signal to the rest of the world that we consider the funding of Homeland Security a priority. There is plenty of time for us to debate immigration politics. But to adamd immigration politics into the funding of Homeland Security at this critical moment is a terrible idea. Lets pass the clean funding, and i think the republicans have forgotten theyre in charge. They can bring up immigration policy debate the next day. Keep us on it for a month. Theyre in control. But i think all of us are just kind of confused why you would want to mire down the funding of Homeland Security right now with isis doing barbaric acts around the world where the rest of the world is coming together trying
to figure out how to do more with Homeland Security and these guys are threatening to shut it down. You dont want to shut down the department of Homeland Security when isis is burning people alive. Youre on the Armed Services committee. Youve heard a lot of the debate going on around capitol hill. 10,000, some suggesting 10,000 troop theres. Others suggesting that we stay out and learn or lessons from the last 12 years of war and occupation. I always love having you on because you come from a state that is dead in the center of america, and and usually a bellwether. What are you hearing from constituents in missouri . I dont think my constituents they 10,000 troops is the answer, but they are very worried about who these people are and what they are doing, and lets give isis credit for one thing. They have done what we have struggled to do over the last decade, and that is unite. Unite the world against them. We now have allies like we have
nerve her before. In the struggle against terrorism. It is universal. And if i can followup on that claire i would guess people in missouri are kind of like me and people in northwest florida, were tired of fighting everybody elses wars for them. Were tired of carrying japan on our back tired of carrying germany on our back tired of sending our sons and daughters over to die in the middle east while the middle east sits by and criticizes. Ive got to believe that people in missouri like people in northwest florida are glad to finally see the uae, jordan and other arab countries finally stepping up . And we need take advantage of that, and thats why i think its very important we get this use of force done. Congress needs to reassert itself in this process. Now is the time for us and i think the president has made a good faith effort here. Hes trying to say were going to limit it to three years. No enduring ground offensive, but it gives him flexibility for special ops actions, and certainly to do what were doing now and that is beginning to
train people and allowing other countries to come in and fill the vacuum of leadership we have to have if were ever going to be successful in the middle east. Senator Claire Mccaskill, always good to see you. Thank you very very much. Still ahead, David Axelrod joins us with stories from his 40 years in politics. Well be right back. Okay, you ready to go . I gotta go dad okay lets go go, go, go. Woah go right, go left, go left stop now go. shouting lets go i gotta go can i go . Yup you can go. beeping alert woah there you go way to go lets go buddy, lets go anncr the ford fusion. We go further, so you can. What . Yoplait fridge pack. Eight cups, endless snack possibilities. Available at walmart. Here with us now former Senior Adviser to president obama and director of the university of chicagos institute of politics David Axelrod. Hes the author of the new book believer my 40 years in
politics. Are you that old . I know. Its hard to imagine. 41. I have a grandchild now, too. Oh every now and then you have to confront the reality. Turning 60 next week. Youre a grandpa. And politico in new york. Whippersnapper. The young aging teen star. David, last night you were certainly part of broadcast history as well. Yeah. You were sitting in the green room. Stunning. With jon stewart when he told you he was going to jonny came in no idea. He said listen im going to make a little announcement on the show thats going to get a lot of attention, and you ought to know im leaving. Im done. And it was like my god. You know we were all my wife staff what were you saying after that . Did you ask, why . He said pretty much what he said on the air. He said, there are other things i want to do and it would be easier to keep on doing this but i know its time to do other things and he particularly
emphasized spending time with his family which is part of what i write about in this book and the time that i lost to my family. Because of politics. So i was very sympathetic to him. The book is called i want to ask about that. Your subtitle that you wanted. Yes. Actually was the subtitle that talked about how your idealism survived in this 40 years of politics. Cynical age. Cynical business. Yeah. It was interesting. I was listening to your discussion earlier about brian and the for rossveracity. Its generally not directed at media figures. Generally outward looking in these and involved in the attacks, but there is a lot of cynicism out there today and a lot of cynicism about politics which i understand. But in my 40 years ive also seen a lot of good things happen because people put their shoulder to the wheel and try to move history forward. My interest in politics began
right here in this town when i was 5 years old and jfk came to town and summoned people to kind of move turn the wheel of history. And, you know ive always believed that. Yeah. Willie . Did you find it difficult, david, to write this book and reveal in of the things you do reveal . Obviously people have seized on for example the president s position on gay marriage and cynically and political reasons he didnt reveal the way he really felt tab . Is that hard . You regret that people take stuff out of context and cynical the fact is he was never he was unwavering in his view there should be equal rights, recognizing the fact there was great reap zichbs in the religious community. Tried to square that with the Civil Union Proposal all legal rights for gay couples and increasingly frustrated with having to take that position and ultimately said to us hey, im not saying that. I think its time to take the
next step. He was pushed into it by joe biden, though. No. That is dont be cynical. Come on david. Thats that cynicism im talking about, joe, i was there. Youre being cynical here. He wanted to wait until after his last election. Joe listen to Joe Scarborough if you want the whole story its right here in this book. Jim . Obviously, in these interview, talking about your role in the book people talking about the president. In your time with him what is the biggest misperception of him, youre seeing behind the scenes. The way the public sees him is so disconnected from reality . This notion of aloofness and coldness. I dont see that at all. Weve been friends for over 20 years. And so many of our conversations are about family. Are about you know different struggles, of and concerns that are more personal. Whenever ive had difficulties
in my life hes been there for me. You know when i was in the white house, and one of those stories that we were talking about before were written, and i was the focus of hed be the first guy to come in flop down on the couch and say, dont let the bass tardtards get you down. I consider him a great and warm friend and i think people who know him personally do. That is a great misconception. The book believer. David axelrod, thank you. When we come back remembering Kayla Mueller. The emotional tributes to the arizona woman who gave her life helping others and the powerful letter that she left behind for her family. Plus Michelle Obama gives an exclusive look inside the white house to someone who used to live there herself. General ma bush hager joins us. Were back in just a moment. Sometimes romantic. The worst fears have been realized for those who knew and loved a Young American aid worker captured in syria. Kayla mueller died in isis custody, kwernled edconfirmed to her parents by the captors and yesterday her family and friends
gave an emotional tribute. Things that were important to kayla are finally getting the attention that they deserve. Reporter she was just 26 years old, but Kayla Mueller had already devoted a lifetime to helping others. Comforting those afflicted by war and famine. I am in solidarity with the syrian people. I reject the brutality and killing that the syrian authorities are committing against the syrian people. Reporter she grew up in prescott arizona, but kayla left after college with high hopes of changing the world. She has done more in her incredible 26 years than many people can ever imagine doing in her lifetime. Reporter she traveled to india and israel helping the less fortunate there. In august of 2013 she was leaving a Doctors Without Borders hospital in syria headed for turkey. But before she made to the bus station, kayla was abducted. It would be almost a year before her parents even received proof that they are daughter was still alive. So weve been praying and talking about isis but, you know, do it in a very careful way in regards to kaylas situation. Reporter the muellers had stayed silent all this time pleading with the International Press and the Prescott Community to keep their daughters name out of the newspapers. Hoping that would keep her alive. There was the attempt to rescue her, but when u. S. Special forces arrived, she and three other captives were gone. On friday the world finally learned who Kayla Mueller was. And then yesterday, the emotional story about a girl who even in captivity tried to make peace with the guards who imprisoned her. Kayla tried to teach the guards crafts. To make origami, peace trains they tried to exercise in that small space and kayla would stand on her head. Reporter Kayla Mueller, the will to live and the drive to help others in the face of evil. On behalf of the people of arizona and the United States
congress congress i want to express the deepest condolences to kaylas parents. She wrote i have come to see there is good in every situation. Sometimes we just have to look for it and right now thats what were all trying to do. Weve been moved all morning by this letter that kayla wrote to her family while in captivity in the hopes that if her cellmates were preleased they would be able to get it to her family, and in the letter she actually does everything that shes known for doing. She reassures her parents that shes safe and unharmed. They writes at the thought of her loved ones sends her into a fit of tears adding if you could say that ive suffered at all through this whole experience, it would only be in knowing how much suffering i have put you all through. I will never ask you to forgive me and i do not deserve your
forgiveness. She signed the letter all my everything kayla, and that letter is an example to every Single Person on the face of the earth in terms of what it really means to be good. Thank you. What did you take away from playing that character . Well, so many things. I grews with that character. I was 21 when i started, and it was a huge whirlwind and i loved playing her. That our value comes from somewhere much deeper than what we look like. And you tapped into what every girl feels at some point in her life. Its about a sex lives and the relationship lives of millennials, in new york and how thats how thats changed since the advent of social media and all of these new ways to communicate and be in relationships is having an effect on the way we have relationships and what that means for our kind of meant many and psychological im not sure all of its good. Thomas, theres too many ways to
communicate. Theres no way to kind of get space and then in some ways theres absolutely no humanity toy it. Does that make sense . America, youre tapping into a zeitgeist, swipe left, swipe right, to make connections. Its okay. Your daughters well. Oh god. But for you, when you choose roles and especially going after this with a production with producer title to you, what does it say about female empowerment . Ugly betty an empowered character. Sisters of traveling pants. What does that do for you . Its not does it hit the message. For me do the characters feel reeled, flushed out, isnt some way relatable even if not likable and i think the way to tell, to create female characters that are empowering are just to make them feel true to life and make them feel real, and so issues like in xy
relationship issues that are age old are just are new again, because the obstacles are new and because the tools with which this generation has are different. And not more effective. Not more effective. I grew up in the age of waiting for a guy to call and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting, and it driving you crazy waiting.
