I got a friend calling me yesterday afternoon asking me after the beheading whether new york was still a safe place to raise their kids. I know you got a call from a friend who was shaken. Asking all sorts of questions about it. Not that the first wasnt horrific, but the second has a chilling effect. Both of them just absolutely terrible. Americans are wakening to the fact that what were witnessing is not even just another International Terrorist organization. Isis to Many Americans seem to be the face of evil, islamic extremist mutated to its most deadly form. Theyre sweeping up territory, seizing hundreds of millions in stolen money, they have hundreds of american passports and seem to be determined to killed as municipal americans as possible. There are times when paranoia and irrational fear grip americans and their political leaders. That fear leads our country down a disastrous path. Vietnam and iraq obviously are two examples of that. I dont think, though, isis is a third. Over the past few weeks, a lot of democrats have thanked me for my evenhanded approach to this
crisis. A lot of right wingers have barbed me for not bashing the president. I gently remind you that a storm is writhing in the middle east unlike any in history. In this time of trouble the enemy isnt barack obama. The enemy is isis. Americans understand this. If barack obama is not shooting first and asking questions later, a warweary america will support that caution. But make no mistake of it, this president is going to act strongly against isis because he has no other choice. As the threat to americans grow, republicans should be seen as encouraging the commander in chief on this threat instead of taking cheap pot shots on every sunday show at every turn. That, my friends, is not just good politics. Thats good for america. I love the quote, mika, that Benjamin Franklin had which is, well all either hang together or well hang separately. I want everybody to know that im signed up for hanging together and facing down the threat with a democratic president just like democrats did with republican president in the months that followed september 11th. Weve already seen them recruiting several hundred of them. Theyre laying their cards out
on the table. Theyre clear about what they want to do, they want to go after arab regimes. Theres no doubt about it. This is not an iraq by the way, im so glad you point that out because this is not isis against the west. This is not isis against christians. This is also isis against muslims. This is isis against the world. This is isis against the world. Kim, speaking of isis against the world, whats europes reaction right now. Obviously we americans are more shaken because of the beheading of yet another american journalist. Is europe awakening to this fact that isis is a growing threat and pose possibly a great threat to many European Countries . I think that has been clear to many European Countries over the last few weeks and months, particularly in the u. K. Because the man who appears to have been responsible for the beheading of
both james foley and Steven Sotloff speaks with a british accent. So there is a growing sense in the u. K. This is not just a faraway problem in the middle east, although geographically its not that far, this is something that could come back to haunt the uk itself and by extension europe. President hollande, a few weeks ago, the french president , said this is a problem coming to knock on europes door and if something more forceful had been done because of what was going on in syria, if military action had been taken against president assad a year ago, perhaps isis would not have been able to make the gains it has made. Its one point of very. Wes moore, obviously uf talked about a lot of americans will support this president when he takes aggressive action
against isis. Obviously the tabloids in new york city are blasting away, the daily news writing the picture of the killer saying do you have a strategy now, mr. President . Theres a growing realization that a warweary america wants to go back to war. Im wondering what caution do we need to take before we start firing . We have the example of what happened in iraq when we went in before figuring out a way to get out of there. What do we need to do . What do we need to be worried about instead of going in firing missiles . We need to be worried about there is not just the shortterm threat but the longterm threat. We have to be cognizant of both before we decide to put anything in front of us, anything on the table or off of the table. We have to understand when were talking about things like limited military air strikes, that you can do limited military air strikes all you want, but if
you dont have a couple things in place, the limited military air strikes are only going to have limited effect. This is not about slowing down the growth of isis. This is about eliminating isis. One thing, i hear people talk about boots on the ground and whats going to happen with american soldiers. Theres no one more cautious about warfare, about being about to activate warfare than american soldiers this is what were here for. We dont like feeling that were activated by something that doesnt have a longterm effect or for political purposes. People understand the threat of isis and whats being done. Were prepared and ready. Lets bring in michael leiter. Michael, bottom line, what keeps
you up at night about the potential of isis spreading around the world . Two things, mika, a westerner getting on a plane in istanbul, flying to either europe or the United States and setting off an improvised explosive device just like in 2009 or americans who have trained and fought with isis in syria, coming back to the United States and they, using small weapons or ieds attack sites in the u. S. I dont think its something thats going to happen tomorrow, but i think in the very near term there is absolutely within isils capabilities and their intent. Its their intent and unlike a lot of other terror groups, we hear them having 100 million, possibly more than that. Weve heard reports of them taking over chemical plants in iraq. They seem to have the capacity to cause more damage to the United States and even al qaeda
in its heyday. They really are more established and control more geographic ground. This isnt an organization thats are going to choke off financially or keep them from getting military resources. They have all of that. The only long home intent left is can they get a westerner to thats not easy. Attack in the west. I will say in koount terrorism perspective its really, really hard to play defense on that. Let me bring in bill neely in london. Bill, what is you were just in northern iraq. Tell us whats happening on the ground there . Whats the attitude of the people there . Is it a state of siege or do they believe they can push isis back . Going back to your initial comments about being shaken, i think for all of us in northern iraq, i was there two weeks ago standing beside a destroyed isis
vehicle. At one point isis shelled the positions we were in. It shakes all of us as journalists to go in and out of this region regularly to see two journalists beheaded like this. Clearly isis is at the moment on that region people are on the back foot. People are speculating that this is why these videos coming out. In the second video the killer clearly refers of the setback in the town of amerli. Here in the u. K. This morning david cam roond his closest officials, close cabinet officials, military and intelligence officials have been discussing what on earth to do about this. At the end of that second video, there was a third hostage and is british. The killer is clearly british
and the next man set up to be killed is a brit. A ransom is out of the question. Like the u. S. , the u. K. Does not pay ransom. Identifying this killer is under way but no one has positively identified him yet. The big question is will the u. K. Join with the u. S. In air strikes at the minute the u. S. Kim, i wanted to know from you if youve gotten a sense from any of the arab diplomats that you deal with that this is a turning point for them to become more involved on the ground and not just simply outsourcing it to the west to solve problems in their own region. I think arab diplomats would reply that this is a problem that they have been worried about and concerned about for quite some time. I just spent the summer in lebanon where isis is knocking
at the gates as well. Theres a lebanese soldier who was taken hostage who has just been beheaded as well this week. I think in the arab world theres a sense that although the outrage about the beheading of american citizens is deeply felt here in the u. S. Because he has a name, he has a face, weve red his stories, seen the message from his mother. We saw the poignant messages from the parents of james foley. Although that outrage is deeply felt here, because these people are very real for us in the u. S. , its important to remember that what james and steven were trying to do was make the suffering of the people over there in the arab world very real for people in the u. S. They were trying to bring those stories to their audiences in the u. S. To remind people of the suffering there. So the reaction in the arab world is one of, yes, we feel for the pain of people in the u. S. , but we have been suffering as well for quite some time

What you have is low income respond overwhelmingly for the democrats. Middle class voters are split. Middle class voters give the president a 51 disapproval on standing up for the middle class. I think traditionally is about 50 of registered voters in a nonpresident ial year, about 70 in a president ial year. I think what were seeing here, why we look at intensity so much. All the key groups that were the president s key groups in the last election, young voters, africanamerican voters, single women, are all substantially lower than the republican base. We expected tom cotton to be way ahead right now. We expect the republicans to be doing much better in kentucky which is still tied. A lot of red states where republicans arent pulling away. Why is that . Ill start with you, salinda. Voters are upset with both parties. Voters are more anti incumbent than they are anti one party or the other. Ever seen it this bad . Ive never seen it this evenly bad. Its a race to the bottom, right . It used to be, well, my guy is good, now they put their guy on notice. If youre an incumbent Congress Person running, thats not a good badge of honor. Usually a zero sum game. A republican president goes down, democrats go up. Vice versa. It is now throw the bums out. A lot of people even not liking their own congressmen. It really isnt. Why . If you look at our survey and the internals, one of the things you get in the public polls that are out there, theyre not looking at the intensity that changes the numbers somewhat. If you look at the Competitive Senate seats, that generic ballot that we lead by four points grows to a 12point lead in those states. Ed, here we are whats today, guys . September 3rd. It sound like, ed, two days after labor day youre
predicting a big republican win. Particularly in the senate. So republicans win the senate . I think we do win the senate, and i think we may even have a couple of seats to spare. You look at this poll that came out, you think its great news for republicans . Its across the board, if you look at the president s numbers, you have to look at the intensity of its measurement, very good for us. Why is this poll good news for democrats . I dont think its good news for democrats, there if we get the turnout corrected and weve been practicing a long time, particularly with the obama team, then this race evens up. We are ahead on Social Security and medicare. This is an older electorate. In 2010 we were behind on Social Security and medicare, now were ahead on Social Security and medicare. The president explaining he does have a strategy, the strategy is to make sure isis pays for what theyve been doing, to stop them from killing more americans and more westerners. But for people that expect the president of the United States to shoot first and ask questions later, dont understand how complicated this conflict is. You just dont know. You also dont understand whats happened in america over the past ten years. We are a warweary nation. And it is better for us when we are facing a threat like isis, a threat that could be existential
for a lot of People Living in new york, a lot of People Living in washington, d. C. , that we get it right the first time. Yesterday i was talking to somebody who was asking me whether new york was still a safe place to live. I said, of course, new york is still a safe place to live. Lets not overreact to this. There is this feeling that americans get, and sometimes americans get it before politicians in washington even get it, that this time its different. This is a terrorist organization thats not only not a jv squad, theyre not like other terrorist organizations. They are growing like an infection spreading across the middle east and they want to spread across the world. Unlike the taliban, they want to kill americans in our homeland. The president was asked if he wants to destroy isis or just
contain it. He was in estonia doing a press conference with the leader of estonia this morning, very early hours. And he again called it a cancer, something you have to contain. Not sure if its possible to ultimately get rid of the remnants, but that it must be contained. But the clock is ticking. When you have a terrorist organization that has hundreds of millions of dollars, the ability to take over chemical plants, a terrorist organization that has hundreds of american passports, hundreds of british passports, this is a cancer that you cant let lay dormant. This is a cancer that has to be cut up. And i support the president trying to get arab nations to fight with us side by side, trying to get european nations im sick and tired of europeans sitting back and doing nothing, turning the other cheek as Vladimir Putin kicks them in the face time and time and time again because of money. fact, show Islamic State militants beheading a second american journalist in syria. Isis says it murdered 31yearold Steven Sotloff in response to u. S. Air strikes in iraq. Sotloff was kidnapped last year in syria. The killer says, quote, im back, obama, with the same british accent as in the names foley video. The video appears to be shot in a similar locations with both hostages wearing a get morelike jumpsuit. Hours after the video emerged, president obama ordered 350 more americans to iraq in noncombat roles. While in a trip through europe the president spoke about sotloffs murder offering Harsh Criticism. Whatever these murders think theyll achieve by killing innocent americans like steven, they have already failed. They failed because, like people around the world, americans are
repulsed by their bar barrism, their horrific acts only unite us as a country and stiffen our resolve to take the fight against these terrorists. Those who make the mistake of hafrming americans will learn we will not forget and our reach is long and justice will be served. Lets bring in nbc news senior White House CorrespondentChris Jansing traveling with the president this morning in estonia. Chris, obviously in new york city, a lot of headlines, the daily news 13e6kly asks the question, do you have a strategy now, mr. President . The president explained those comments but a lot of people inside the white house feeling pressure to respond to this barbaric threat coming from the middle east. What can you tell us . I dont think theres any doubt, joe, that the pressure is building at home and abroad. You heard what the president had to say this morning, the intention is to degrade and destroy isis until it becomes, in his words, a manageable problem. But talking to Senior Administration officials, theyll tell you a couple of things. One is that this has not changed
the white house view of ice sis or the threat it poses. Youve heard hes not changing his approach to all of this. His intention when he leaves here in estonia is to go to nato, to talk to other countries, to get them on board. Theres certainly no indication in spite of the fact that we know that the pentagon and intelligence officials have drawn up plans of possible isis targets in syria that any decision has been made to move on that. I think its also worth noting that the same video that he spoke of and all of us have been so repulsed by has been part of the propaganda arm of isis which has been extremely effective in recruiting not only folks from that region, but also western fighters, and one more note i would want to make that is one of caution as well is that isis still holds a small number, probably two american aid workers and three british
citizens. So that also weighing heavily on the president here. Mika, joe . Chris jansing, thank you so much. I want to go to washington, d. C. And Eugene Robinson. Talking about not shooting first and asking questions later, talking about the president slipped up on friday. He said a line he shouldnt have said. We talked about it, it was inartful. At the same time, this is a president facing some trouble, calling them the jv team. He has the daily news which isnt a conservative publication asking, do you have a strategy yet, mr. President . Other sthan tom friedman this morning, there are a lot of those saying isis is not a threat to the homeland, a lot of americans are starting to feel that way. What does a president need to do to break out of this image he has that hes just a little bit too laid back, just a little bit too removed, just a little too
distanced when we have a situation scaring a lot of americans . I thought that clip we just heard, joe, of the president speaking in estonia was pretty forceful and pretty direct and showed resolve and how seriously hes taking the situation. I think thats the way he has to speak about this as he goes about implementing, and we talked about this last week. What is the outlines of a plan which involves getting our allies in the region and our allies in europe to come in and to at the very least assist and join in the campaign against a threat that is frankly a much greater threat to them than it is to us. I think he also needs to make that clear. I agree that certainly in the short and medium term, perhaps not in the long term, isis is much more of a regional threat
and a threat to europe than it is to us. Mike . David, what goes through your mind when you hear, read, see stories about what weve witnessed over the past couple weeks . You were held captive. What goes through your mind about this . How brave Steven Sotloff and jim foley were. You see them in these videos. The words are gibberish, its all scripted, theyre forced to say these things. My guess is theyre threatening the other hostages saying if you dont say what we want you to say, well abuse them. Its so frustrating to me because Steven Sotloff loved journalism, he went to the region, covered civilian deaths bravely. Jim foley was an incredibly courageous captives. He challenged his guards, may have been why hifs killed first. I hate to see them reduced to this image on the front page of the newspaper. I dont want these guys to win. And this british guy is just
despicable. This is a public murder. When i was in captivity, it struck me how these were just kids, like 20yearolds who were playing a game, wasnt it great to have a prisoner and they could feel strong and powerful. I agree we need to wait and think this through, but not let them win, not let them define these young men. Talking about that, these are just kids, youre talking about the terrorists. Yes. Theyre caught up in this and its like a game to them. Its a great thing, theyre part of this great global movement, and they believe it, to defend islam from a christian, jewish, hindu conspiracy to ob late rate their faith and culture from the face of the earth. None of it is true, but theyre in these little bubbles. Theyre a threat, but they control these pockets of territory. Its very difficult to get at them, but were talking about
17,000 isis fighters. Thats a lot, but thats nothing compared perspective. Meanwhile, we know now and wes, let me ask this of you, because the president has authorized 350 additional u. S. Military personnel to go into iraq. These forces are being sent there to protect our diplomatic facilities and personnel there in bagdad. This is while the president , as we saw in estonia this morning now traveling on to wales and to facilitate talks with our nato allies. But the clock, as joe points out, is ticking. And while the president doesnt want a singular strategy, how long do we wait to come up with this coalition of the willing, an International Force . Well, i dont think theres any question amongst either americans or International Forces that we can be strong, that we can be tough. The question really comes now what does it take for us to be smart. As were looking and putting more intelligence on the ground so we can know exactly who can
we target and who are our partners in the region, we know a true longterm strategy has to include turkey, has to include whats going to happen with syria, has to include whats going to happen in iran and iraq and saudi arabia. Thats the type of coalition. Thats the kind of groundwork that has to be laid out. I dont think theres any question to anybody that isis knows that were coming and were coming strong for them. This is what we set up for. You do think that, wes . You think the New York Post this morning this wont stop until we stop them, you do think the president , you do think americans are ready to go after isis . Theres no negotiation with isis. Theres no table talk signing thats going to happen with isis. We know theres only one final conclusion of whats going to happen with isis. But the question we then have to think about, we can eliminate, we can kill thousands of isis militants within a matter of 15 minutes if thats what we chose to do right now. But if we do it, we have to
think about what are the longterm consequences. For example, when you look at isis, they use social media in an extraordinarily effective way. They go after the diseffective. With our military capacity, are we not creating more diseffectives, a larger and longer problem we have to deal with later on. Turning to the other big stories, the head of the cdc says the window to stop the Ebola Outbreak in west africa is closing. At ground zero for the disease in west africa, Food Shortages are complicating the situation as the death toll mounts. A man reportedly wandered out of a clinic in liberia creating panic in the streets as Health Workers in yellow suits tried to corral him. The latest person to be dying northwest, another american doctor, obstetrician who reportedly was not working in an ebola ward. Meanwhile, dr. Kent brantly whose unlikely recovery captivated the country explained
his ordeal in an exclusive interview with nbc. There was a time in liberia when you were really sick that doctors didnt think you would make it through one of those nights. Were you aware of that . Yeah. Did they talk to you about it . I dont think they ever said, kent, i think youre about to i die, but i felt like i was about to die. And i said to the nurse who was taking care of me, im sick, i have no reserve and i dont know how long i can keep this up. We continue to hit isil targets in iraq, continue to conduct humanitarian missions. The extra personnel will be added Security Assistance for the embassy complex and in and around bagdad, a security sort of defensive posture, thats their job. Obviously wont be going into any combat. Admiral, a week or two ago you had the secretary of defense saying isis was the greatest threat to the United States since 9 11. Is that how the pentagon sees this threat . What he said is this is a group like nothing weve seen before. Hes referring to the manner in which they fund and train and equip themselves and the fact that theyre grabbing ground. This isnt like any terrorist organization, they want infrastructure. What do they have that other terrorist groups havent had . We understand they have hundreds of millions of dollars and a lot of american passports. What makes them a greater threat . First of all, that are well resourced, theyre well trained, theyre well led. They in many ways act like an army of sorts. They want to take territory. They want to govern in a very brutal, horrific way. The other thing is they have as pir rations to hit western targets. While they pose a regional
threat inside iraq and to the region, they have aspirations of going after western targets, including american targets. We have to be mindful of that threat. The foreign fighter issue is one thats very real. You saw this play out in Great Britain last week and one we have to watch closely as well. Admiral, to the best of your knowledge on the ground, the territory that they have seized and hold today, you mentioned the word govern. Can they govern . Theyre brutal, say tifts, can they govern . They cant really govern. The ultimate way to defeat them is defeat their ideology. Their ideology is already being rejected, not just by shia or kurds, but by sunnis as well. Ultimately they will fail. In many ways they have failed. Their tactics are so horrific that theyre not gaining much support. I dont think that this is a
threat thats going to be, in terms of years and years and years, but its certainly one we have to worry about right now in in the region. Admiral, we appreciate you coming on. Number two, a number of people in congress say we shouldnt do it unless we have a grand bargain, unless we do major tax reform. A number of things, likes like when burger king basically renounces its citizenship, moves its headquarters on paper, saves tax dollars or a company shuts down in ohio and goes to beijing, they get a tax break, we should be eliminating those tax breaks immediately as we work on longterm tax reform. We arent as competitive as we could be and should be. Senator, a lot of republicans and democrats both agree on some basic outlines. They think the Corporate Tax rate may be too high and maybe it needs to be lowered. I heard the president talking about that. Ive heard democrats talking about it, heard republicans talking about it. But why cant we get this deal done right now . Were not going to get a major
deal before this election . Maybe we get it next year. Why cant we do it now and what do we lose if we dont get it now . If we dont do it now, we see companies, looking at burger king, burger king says do it your way, but they want to have it both ways where they benefit from the transportation infrastructure, meat inspection, National Defense while they let other people pay the taxes as they renounce their citizenship. Thats a good question. We ought to take some of these that are particularly egregious tax loopholes, close them for whatever reason, Interest Group pressure in congress, we cant do it. Weve tried over and over and fasted a filibuster on closing a loophole. If a company shuts down in dayton and moves to china, they can deduct the cost of the move, deduct the cost of the new plant. We should have, this stead of the way were doing it, we should have a global minimum tax. Weve seen by partisan agreement on that so Companies Want to

A very false debate. Why shouldnt scotland be independent . Whats the downside of that . I believe in natural self determination. If scotland wants to be independent, thats fine. I think theyre being sold a pig in a poke, theyre being told they can be independent and be members of the European Union. If youre members of the eu, their courts superimpose over yours. Its a false proposition. When you go back about six days before the referendum, are you going to be concerned about having troubles . Because you had some, hounded by protesters, you have to run and seek refuge somewhere. This is not an easy task. Not a tea party. It was horrible. The Police Locked me in a pub for my own safety. How terrible is that, right . At least it was a pub. It was pretty cool. You know, nationalism, a sensible degree of naturalism is a good healthy thing. We belong to something, we respect something. Excessive nationalism is

If the independence vote wins, what difference on a daily basis would that make for the average life of a person in scotland . Well, i personally think that the economic sums that salmon is putting wouldnt add up, they would lose the english subsidy. They wouldnt get any subsidy from europe because now weve let very poor countries in like romania and bulgaria. I think on a daytoday basis, very little change at all. Actually they have a fair degree of autonomy already. I think down the road, i see it as a country that would face very serious economic problems. The welfare cuts in scotland are huge, well over 50 of the people on scotland are living on benefits of some kind, and i dont see a very left wing

I was struck when i was there at how many scots saw themselves as having almost a scandinavian orientation rather than looking toward the south. Were a northern country, too. Would tlnt be an impact on the use of the pound, the british pound and the question of whether the bank of england
would guarantee, for example, scottish debt, would there be a Currency Union with england or the rest of the u. K. Or would they be looking for a Currency Union with the eu in using the euro . How would that work . I think the truth of it is for salmon to rejoin the European Union which is his stated aim, he would have to sign a treaty that would commit him to joining the euro. If youre in the euro, you dont control your own xhuk and monetary policy, its decided someplace else. Hes not offering any genuine form of independence. I believe in uk independence, i want the United Kingdom to be a free country where we trade with europe and make our own laws. u. S. Senator. Sullivans campaign went up on the air with their own rebuttal immediately pointing out a clerical error was to blame for the murder suspects Early Release before sullivan took office. Steve, your record is fair game, right . This is a tough ad . Very tough. It is a very, very tough ad. Mitt romney had tough ads run against him. This is politics, right . I think that ad is both fair, tough and effective. The problem is if the victims family starts to weigh in and says no more, then you have to take it down. But the candidate crying about that ad doesnt seem to be very effective to me because that ad seems to be both credible, real,
tangible and probably have an impact on real people. Kasie, the problem comes when you actually have the family of the victims saying stop exploiting our loved ones death for your political gain. Take us to that side of the story. Sure. Thats kind of what has hung the begich campaign up here a little bit. This is obviously an ad they put up at labor day, it was something they knew they had. It was something the Sullivan Campaign knew was coming. They had an immediate rebuttal for it. There were some democrats in washington thought this could be the Silver Bullet for beg gish, it would ultimately take sullivan down. Then an attorney wrote to the begich campaign saying, quote, your campaign is playing poor politics at the extense of my clients and frankly has done only what is in the best interest of mark beg gish rather than protecting the victims of the most serious crime in alaska
history. Its pretty tough. Begichs campaign tried to finesse this in the beginning when initially on saturday they asked for this ad to be taken down. Ultimately they removed all sign of the ad. You cant find it on the internet. They removed the research that backed up the ad. They clearly had to take maya culpa on this. Its being viewed as a campaign that has otherwise been sure footed. I think you have to apologize to the family. When the family weighs in with Something Like that, you certainly from the republican perspective, you have the rest of the campaign made for you. Campaigns are fundamentally about character. You have every ability to decimate this character on the basis of his running that ad with the familys comment. Its a huge deal. Lets go from alaska to north carolina, another contested race where the democrat is fighting for her political life. Senator kagay hagan is taking a swipe at tom tillis for gutting. Im megan, a teacher who lives in kerry t. Money that should be going to Public Education instead seems to be going to corporations, millionaires. The education cuts have impacted my ability to make a difference by raising my class sizes, getting rid of my teacher assistants i have for help. I have no textbook to teach from. You dont have a textbook . I dont have a textbook now. When im asked who is responsible for these cuts, its tom tillis and his legislature. Obviously kay hagan, another one fighting for her political life in a red state. I dont think its effective. Look at whats going on in the world. When you look at this when you look at this and trying to run ads on education funding, i think it rates hollow. Democrats are doing everything

intent and capability. Whats a simplistic approach, the 17,000 . No, that you just blow them up. And we have the pentagon saying there is not a military solution to this. Exactly. The thing that comes to mind is you have to look at isis on two levels. Its intent, what it wants to do. What does it want to do . Have territory, establish an Islamic State, it wants to put a lot of people under its control. Kill a lot of westerners. Absolutely. Thats the way it wants to do it. Thats not the objective but it is willing to kill westerners if it means doing what it wants to do, which is establish the state. The question is does it have the capability to do that. Do they want territory more or do they have this grandiose idea like Osama Bin Laden who wants to blow up big buildings in america . They want the territory so they can do that and expand their ideology. If that means attacking america or western interests, theyll do that. If it gets in their way, theyll do that. Whats the end to this . We saw actually the precursor to
this in iraq back in 2004, 2005, 2006, but, you know, everybody always talks about what caused the arab awakening, what happened with the sunnis in western iraq. I think a lot of it was overreach of al qaeda in iraq. When they blue up the joer drda wedding, you could almost sense a revulsion by a lot of people in iraq saying we dont love the americans being here, we hate them being here more. These guys are killing more muslims than they are americans. They dont have broad acceptance and appeal in the muslim world. Youve got to put the muslim world all the way to indonesia. They dont necessarily have Public Appeal for their ideology but they do have enough support to continue this fight inside iraq and syria because of the political vacuum that now exists. All right, on that note, u. S. Officials are confirming this morning that a video does in
fact show Islamic State militants beheading a second american journalist in syria. Isis says it murdered 31yearold journalist Steven Sotloff in response to u. S. Air strikes in iraq. He was kidnapped last year in syria. Hours after the video emerged, president obama ordered 350 more american troops to iraq in noncombat roles. Earlier this morning while on a trip through europe, president obama spoke about sotloffs murder offering Harsh Criticism of isis actions. Whatever these murderers think theyll achieve by killing innocent americans like steven, they have already failed. They have failed because, like people around the world, americans are repulsed by their b barbarism. We will not be intimidated. Their horrific acts only unite us as a country and stiffen our resolve to take the fight against these terrorists. Those who make the mistake of harming americans will learn that we will not forget and that
our reach is long and justice will be served. Moments ago here on morning joe the press secretary for the pentagon explained why isis remains such a threat. First of all, they are well resourced, as you pointed out. They are well trained. They are well led. They in many ways act like an army of sorts and they want to take territory. They want to govern. In a very brutal, horrific way. The other thing is they have aspirations to hit western targets. So while they pose certainly a regional threat inside iraq and to the region, we also know they have aspirations at going after western targets, including potentially american targets. The neocons are saying the president is too weak. A lot of people on the left dont want the president to do anything at all. What would you do if youre in the president s place, what would you do . I think what hes doing. I think what hes doing is following the bush 41 james baker model before the first gulf war and assembling a real
coalition. The saudis have to play a part in this, the kuwaitis, the egyptians, the jordanians and they have to speak up and actively involved because isis isnt just a threat to iraq and syria, not just to the middle east, its now a global threat. Ukraine and russias president s have reached a deal for a permanent truce. Thats according to ukraines president , anyway. President putin and poroshenko spoke by phone and the head of the Ukrainian Government announced they had come to an agreement. But the kremlin quickly poured cold water on the announcement that saying only steps to peace had been discussed and insisted that russia is not part of the conflict. The. The family of the 9yearold girl who accidentally shot and killed her instructor with an uzi at a firing range last week is being heard from for the first time. According to the Police Report, the parents say immediately after the shot was fired, their daughter hit the ground and they feared she was injured. After learning she was okay, she told them the gun was, quote, too powerful for her. Amid the chaos, the parents say they were unaware the instructor was injured and were able to remove their child from the scene before she saw what happened. The family says they are devastated over the accident, calling it a lifechanging tragedy. The fallout continues from the celebrity photo hacking scandal leaving Many Americans leery about the security of cloud data storage. Nobody feels ashamed for them. I dont want to see it. Say you buy the body issue for sports illustrated. Whats the difference . Im not here to have a debate about people taking pictures of themselves naked. You keep wanting to say they shouldnt have been naked. Fine. Seriously, whats your deal. I dont really care. If people want to take pictures without clothes on, thats their

Yeah, the jury just went out, so this is just the second day now of deliberations. They deliberated part of yesterday. And so im not sure thats good for either side. But the judges instructions were very good for the prosecution, because they he essentially told the jury to give a very broad interpretation of official acts. Essentially they have to prove that the governor committed official acts to support this businessman who was giving him all this money and all these loans and all this stuff. You think thats good for the prosecution . I think thats good for the defense because youve got to show the quid pro quo, right . Yeah, but the definition of official acts, if its just that Bob Mcdonnell had to sign a bill in favor of jonnie williams, thats a slam dunk for the defense because he didnt do that. But he opened the governores mansion to him. He in many ways promoted this snake oil that williams was selling and in fact thats what happens in businesses all the time. Im not defending Bob Mcdonnell. Im just saying if im a juror im sitting there going, well, wait a second, did he do more for this guy than he did for another . And the judges instructions said it doesnt have to be any more than he does for other people, it just has to be something that he did for him and it doesnt have to be signing a bill. It can be other things that you wouldnt necessarily think were an official act. That was a very good instruction for the prosecution. All right, well be watching that deliberations continue. I think isis has moved into a different stage. They were able to capture a number of conventional weapons so they made a land grab into a vacuum and made this stupid statement about a calafate. One is theyll continue to get americans and do this. Youll find an embassy attacked or wherever tourists are. I think the danger too is in baghdad. I dont think they can take baghdad, but they can certainly infiltrate it and cause enough chaos it would become dysfunctional. That would create a problem for iraq as a state. I think the saudis, the kuwaitis are desperately worried. Are they going to get involved . Is america going to find itself
in a position where we have to carry everybody elses water . Because we cant do it unilaterally. I agree. We shouldnt do it unilaterally. But i think we could take a good lesson from george h. W. Bush administration where we built an islamic coalition. Remember, general schwarzkopf the president is criticized by everybody, but hes not firing first and asking questions later. He could actually be trying to build that coalition. But theres a time factor here. Its wonderful to deliberate and i appreciate that. The whole premise of the book is think through what youre going to do. But were running out of time and space, literally both. There has to be immediate action. Now, putting these another 350 troops down, which i assume are for security and target acquisition and intelligence and all that, but theres a crisis here if we dont get them isis out of iraq right now. So could this emergence of
isis onto the world stage, this escalation, could it have been avoided in your estimate . I dont think it could have been avoided. Obviously the situation in syria was breeding this. I think that maybe the moderate opposition should have stood up to the extremists within syria. Assad played this very well. He didnt attack them, he allowed them to grow and fester, i think wanting us to get involved, so i think his strategy was much more viable. But were looking at genocide here. The yezidis, if we havent learned from past incidents where we stood back, when i say we, i dont just mean the United States. Im waiting for this u. N. Resolution. Where is it . We should be pressing the u. N. To authorize use of force which would give us i think the gulf countries and others, that u. N. Resolution gives them cover for forming a coalition. Thats what gave it to them in the first gulf war. General, off your experience, given the scope, the pace, the resources that isis clearly has right now, do you think in riyadh, saudi arabia, that they fear that eventually theyll come for the throne and, thus, saudi arabia has a larger stake now in the fight against isis than they did when president george h. W. Bush and jim baker were putting together that coalition . I think they definitely do. Theres always been a fear, obviously, of an internal problem, where disenfranchised youth, radicalized youth, they have done a good job in saudi arabia controlling this and really understand their own population. But theres a fear that this could become a wave that washes down the gulf and eventually comes to their backyard. I think thats greater now than it might have been in the past even with al qaeda. General, when you take a look at the big picture in the region, and we were talking about this israeli announcement of the new settlement and appropriation of land, how does
that create a Ripple Effect that then plays into the hands of groups like isis . I think its clear this was a move out of either frustration or revenge for the killing of those poor Young American that were killed that made this all kick off. But its a disastrous move. Theres no need for more room for settlements. Anybody thats studied the settlement issue knows that most of the settlements are not full. The demographics doesnt mean it doesnt show that the israelis need more space. So whats the longterm impact of that . What does it do to the twostate solution . Well, here you have the west bank. This wasnt gaza or hamas controlled, he grabs parts of the west bank this is the beginning of the end of the twostate solution. Does it kill that . I think it can. And is it all because of netanyahus weakness at home . I think hes playing to his constituency. He didnt destroy hamas. In many ways hamas comes out maybe with a psychological advantage, although a military

What do you hope people will take away i know you dont want to give away everything that happens, but what is, i guess, your biggest hope in what a viewer takes away from this . You know, ive been watching it with my husband, who hadnt seen it, so were up to episode five, which is as far as is he a tough critic . Does he go, boy, you were pretty good in three, but four thats got to be complicated having him watch you. Hes the only person in the world actually who i really care what he thinks. I mean hes an actor. But i mean truly, truly down to like the very nittygritty. But anyway, ive been watching it and were up to episode five. I just watched it first on my ipad with not the right sound and not color corrected. And ive noticed that there are things that nessa says, that the other characters say, that the piece says that arent part of the discussion in this country, that arent allowed to be said here. That if i said right now on your show, i dont know, it would they would drag you off kicking and screaming. There would be a lot of intimidation. But i think somehow i dont know how hugo did it, but the show, which does not take a position, which does not take a point of view and say this is right and this is wrong, but instead i think lays out elements of the conflict, it does it in a way that it seems at least so far like people can hear. Youre going to have the more honest conversation. How does playing a role like this shape your own personal outlook about such a complex issue . Were you at all concerned about taking on a role at such a controversial topic, everyone has opinions about it . Yeah, i think i feel much more emotionally attached and connected to it than i did before when i started the show. I knew as much as anyone who has two little kids and tries to read the newspaper every day and just does their best and now im like obsessed reading the news about whats happening over there. It does break my heart in a way that it didnt before. And also i think its taught me something about i mean its like truly taught me something about compassion. I do think its very difficult in this situation to have you know, to be onesided or to believe that this is whats absolutely right or this is whats absolutely wrong. Im constantly kind of slightly

old. Nbcs kate snow has more on mikes story. Reporter for Mike Brannigan, running has always been as natural as breathing. He just stood up as a baby and started running. Reporter but something wasnt right. He would run into the walls. He would fall and not put his hands down and smash his head. Reporter diagnosed with autism, by 6 he still wouldnt talk unless he was prompted. But then one day on the playground monkey bars, a breakthrough. He was hanging there and he said, help me. And i fell to my knees. I started crying in the park. I knew that everything was going to be okay. Reporter a couple of years later, his father brought him to a running club, and mike took off. The coach came up to me and said this guy can run. I always want to go faster. Reporter now a senior, Mike Brannigan is ranked one of the top ten High School Runners in the country. I do have to have some things to kind of slow him down. He wants to go faster. Reporter go, mike, go this june he ran a four minute 7 second mile. Are you friends with your teammates . Yeah, im friends with them. We have a good time. Do you think autism makes you a better runner . A better person. A better person . Every time i brought him to a race or practice, he was just a regular kid. All the other stuff that goes on, everything goes away when hes out on the track.
