Robberies, an inmate comes under investigation inside the jail. Rumor has it that hes been putting out orders to assault officers. I wouldnt say its an assault. I would say more of a punishment. I was told that he was up for murder. A distraught father speaks for his son. Overlooking Charleston Harbor is fort sumter. Its f here that the first shot of the civil war were fired in april of 1861. The fort is but one part of history that has been preserved in charleston, South Carolina, a city that several describe as the most hospitalable in the nation. Outside downtown sits a modern day fortress. Strife and conflict often overshadow s southern hospitality. Im begging you. Eg youve got segregation inmates. There are about 1,300 men and women incarcerated at the Detention Center also known as the Charleston County jail. Most are only accused of crimes and are awaiting trial at the resolution of the cases. Communication is the biggest thing i feel when youre dealing with a whole different variety of inmates. The more i talk to find out what the problem is and learn how to deal with a problem, you get less resistance. You get into a fight and you dont know. Officer skipper is a 6year veteran at the jail. Most of the time has been in unit a 1 a where inmates with major rule violations are confined to Single Person cells 23 hourssi per day. They lose most of their privileges and possessions, as well. Se theyve got to have us shackled, because were in disciplinary. Ive been wearing these shackles for show long, it seems like they are not there. Its just that its a normal routine. How you doing . Did you have a great day today . Kind of. What happened . I have been dealing with melvin for a little over two years. He is one that you cant come at hard. You just have to c listen to hi and have patience with him, because he flips like that. Some people i have zero tolerance for and some people i have 10 tolerance. I dont trust him with his hands w handcuffed in front of him. Nd hes unpredictable. He can be smiling in your face and be your best friend and turn around and be ready to swing. He is in disciplinary segregation. He became agitated and grabbed a phone from an officers desk and smashed it on the floor. I got upset. I asked to speak to the sarge. The man wasnt carried out. I took the phone and i chunked it, and then it shattered. Gather was given 60 days in segregation. Thats considered a long time for anyone. Jail Officials Say its because of the phone incident came shortly after an even more serious violation. I have assaulted a correction officer. The officer suspended 30 minutes for refusing an order to return to his cell. He took 30 minutes from me. Thats 30 minutes out of my day that i only can come out out of two hours. He was upset about it. He threw his juice on the officer. The o officer backed away and h his personal alarm. Inmate physically started assaulting the officer. It was really the wrong place at the wrong time for him. His actions disturbed me. I reacted. Gathers finally complied with orders as backup arrived to the unit. With a complex case ahead of him, gathers can face a long stretch in jail. He and a codefendant face 13 charges. Prosecutors say they held up three businesses during a fourday crime spree. Gathers has pled not guilty. Armed robbery just been something that always came natural as a first instinct. My first Armed Robbery was a mexican market. I went in there and demanded money, and i seen the power that i had when i look into their eyes. Oo gathers says he never physically harmed the robbery victims, but acknowledges having scarred them in other ways. I understand that i did scar them probably for life because it will be a memory forgotten. You can hear it in their voice. What . You can hear them pleading you can hear them pleading. You can hear them wanting to cry out, but they dont want to see sort of weak and too vulnerable in the situation that a theyre going through. What about their eyes . Their eyes . What did you see . Their life. I can tell that they feel lik this could be a life and death situation. Gathers says he always hides his identity during hold ups. I choose to disguise myself to give the law a little bit more of a challenge to identify me. Prosecutors say this Security Camera image shows gathers on the right and co defendant on the left. You got to explain this to me. You have to explain this to me. [ laughter ] they are saying that could be me, but its not for sure that they know that its me. Thats my statement. And thats whats going to court. Coming up you put an order out for somebody to be punished from here. It was more so like a warning. Melvin gathers plays a game of cat and mouse with dangerous implications. Just got dirt roads and trouble. A young man from one of the nearby islands faces the worse trouble of his life. On some of the rural island communities off the coast of charleston, South Carolina, many africanamericans identify as cultures that date back oo the ancestors who lived during slaves. They speak an englishbased creole language that can be held throughout the region and inside the Detention Center. I have to actually sit back and listen. They talk fast. And its like they are rumbling or mumbling. Its just their language. The accent is sometimes mistaken for jamaican. They do kind of relate the language. We kind of sound the same, i guess. Im from South Carolina. Im not from jamaica. Talk like they from jamaica. Carlton has lived his entire life on nearby johns island. We just got dirt roads and trouble. Thats really it, dirt roads and trouble. How are you doing, buddy . Now he has plenty of trouble. He is charged with murder, first degree burglary and other crimes relating toa terrifying Home Invasion. Solomon has pled not guilty and is awaiting trial. I know the old saying that everybody is inosent in jail. In some cases some of us really are. Authorities say he and two other men kicked in the back door of a home in the middle of the night. They took his 27yearold sister outside where she was shot in the pelvis and later died. God knows what happened. God knows who killed that lady. God knows that i did not have anything to do with this crime. Solomon was the only man arrested after the surviving victim picked him out of a photo lineup. Whoever that dude saw in the house that night probably was a light skinned male. Since im light skin his history includes prior charges in an unrelated case for allegedly attempting to stab a friend and stealing his car. He pled not guilty and was out on bond when the murder he was now accused of occurred. Accuse. If found guilty he would be eligible for the death penalty. When i see these walls and hear these people, i would never thought none of this would ever happen. He is one of several inmates from johns island. Most are familiar faces to officer green who was born on the island and still lives there. Johns island is a rural community. Everybody is close knit. Everybody knows everybody. I see people from home in here all the time f. I see them at home at the Grocery Store theyre like im out. When i see them in there again its like let me tell you what happened. Melvin gathers is also from johns island. Whats up . You doing all right . I have known his family for quite sometime because we have been in School Together from middle school through high school. By knowing his family it helps being able to talk to him and engage in conversation. Sergeant kitschings hopes that officers greens relationship with gathers will provide insight with gathers role in a gang. Its a set of gangs under a common banner. They fall under the umbrella. We have cases of a leader of a gang sending out members to assault other inmates. We have had some members get caught up with smuggling contra band. They have assaulted staff before. It can be a real big problem. He is a second lieutenant. He is considered one of the higher ranks. When it comes down to his gang affiliations, his chest is out. Hes proud. He refers to himself and i have heard other inmates refer to him as supreme. A lot of people call me supreme. Supreme is the most high. I have a reputation that i must hold. Officer has observed gathers influence over other inmates. If theyre all yelling and screaming, he can stop them. If theyre all quiet, and hes mad, he can start them, as well. I can direct an inmate or a brother or a person, even a nondisciple. If i was to send word to the street to handle anything that needs to be taken care of, it will get handled. Several weeks earlier, an inmate tied to folk nation assaulted an officer in the jail. Now sergeant kitschings wants to find out if gathers is involved. Rumor has on the street that he has been putting out orders to assault officers. Hopefully we are able to confirm or deny the information today. Good evening. Have a seat. How long have you been involved in that . Since day one at age 13, 99. How far up are you . How far am i . Im not comfortable answering that question. Ive been hearing something thats kind of disturbing to me. Ive been hearing that you have been putting orders out on officers to be assaulted. Have you been doing that . I wouldnt say its an assault. I would say more of a punishment. Why . Due to recent actions. Of an officer in here . Yeah. You have to give respect to get it. I understand that. You cant treat people any type of way. So you put an order out for somebody to be punished from here because of the way they treated you. It was more so like a warning. A warning . Yeah. You know you have serious charges right now. You want to add more charges to that . Thats a felony. You go to court with additional felony charges especially putting out orders and hits like that, you might not tend to be that serious, they are serious. And thats going to go against you when you go to court. If you think you have hope, you need to hold on to that hope. Whats wrong . Trying to think of something . No. A wise man always thinks before he speaks. Dealing with people of your caliber and a person of my nature is like playing chess. We on two different sides of the table. Thats right. As kitschings and green press gathers, he begins to back track. Its not of my nature to do stuff like that. Anybody knows supreme, people would know im the more humble type with my authority. Im guilty by association pretty much. Guilty by association. Well, i appreciate you talking to us. Take my advice to heart. Chill out. You dont need anymore charges before you go to court. Thank you. All right. Take him back. Was some kind of hit put out on a specific officer . Did i send it . No. Do everybody think i done it . I think he wants to project himself as being powerful. The other inmate might project him as being a powerful individual. I dont think he ordered the assault. Whats the next step from him . Monitor his activity. So the game continues. Thats all it is is a game. Simple philosophy, they have 365 days to come up with games to feed us. We have 12 hours to defeat the game. Pr Samantha Mcdonald that means using just about anything to feel attractive. I just invented it. This is my toothbrush. Recently when mcdonald took another step to simulate her life at home she got 30 days. This time is because i was celebrating my birthday, and i made alcohol. And someone actually snitched on me. I was making it in a bottle with bread for yeast, fruit for like the acids and stuff. And then i used juice from the lunch which was also shug skpr gives it taste. She is charged with petit larceny and burglary. She pled not guilty. I went to the fridge to get something to eat. I went from the fridge to the bedroom to see if they had change on their dresser or whatever whmpt i opened the first drawer there was 300 sitting in the drawer. So i took 300 and left. Mcdonald has struggled with drug use ranging from marijuana and ecstasy to crack and cocaine. She said she turned to drugs after a painful childhood. I talked to my therapist about that. He says its because of my past. Now mcdonald has new feelings to deal with. Shes met a man here. When he comes out for his hour, he comes to my window. We sit there and talk. And then like hes not really allowed, but he does anyways. Charleston county is one of the few coed segregation units in the nation. Since there are only a few women requiring it. The policy is not to talk to each other. Theyre not to interact at all, but how do you avoid that when theyre yelling through doors. You cant make them not talk. Men and women are not allowed out at the same time, they draw each others attention. This is the only unit that has males and females in it. After a while, you cant prevent everything. I cant go past this blue. We try our best from stopping inmates from going to the door. They watch us just as much as we watch them. If we get distracted theyll run up. Its human nature. Talking to somebody especially when you are in a concrete room by yourself, you will find somebody to talk to. Sometimes inmates communicate through the vent system. That gives them a direct line of communication. What you doing . Speaking to you. They say that were not supposed to communicate with the females. But its to the point where you cant control it. Were in a vent together. Youre going to tell me to stop speaking. Mcdonalds new boyfriend is melvin gathers. You miss me . Samantha, samantha, samantha. Ive known her for probably like a month now. After the hearing, solomons father discusses his sons case with reporters. I was told that he was up for murder, some other charges. But you never know. You just dont know as a parent. You do all the things that you believe you should do. You do everything youre supposed to do, but you never know. Even right now i still dont know. I went off to the military. Somewheres down the line, some things shifted in his life. How it shifted, i dont know. Why it shifted, i still dont know. I wasnt in the present. But some things have changed with him. But hes my son. He is my son. Right or wrong, hes still going to be my son. I know my dad knows in his heart that i aint no killer. I know he knows that. I just really want to talk to him. Thats the worse thing in my mind is having my dad think that. Carlton sr. Couldnt meet with his son, in a few days he will return to visit him. With carlton jr. Denied bail, it could be years before he touches him again since murder trials rarely move quickly. Facing six counts of Armed Robbery and several related charges, melvin gathers case has also been lengthy spanning two years now. Most of his time has been spent in disciplinary segregation where he sometimes walks around during his one hour per day outside his cell. What can you see from in here . Grass. Freedom, a sense of freedom. When i see the grass, i think of another chance. Its not granted that you see another chance. The only thing you see is another facility to another facility. When i look outside, it flashes will i be able to touch the outside society free again . It gets emotional sometimes, you know, because thats my life. Thats the first leaf ive seen in a long time, brother. Samantha mcdonald prefers to take her time at night. I never come out during the day. I never get sun light. And i socialize with other units and my friends. I dont know. Gathers and mcdonald say they have developed a romantic relationship by speaking to one another through the air vents. Mcdonald has entered a guilty plea. Since she has no prior serious offenses, she is likely to bond out soon. When samantha leaves, its like a test. All of which you said during your introduction and interview and our honeymoon period, now its to put you to test. Would you contact me . Would you write me like you said you would write me . It takes determination. Mcdonald isnt sure what will happen with gathers, but says her life needs to change. When i get out, i want to live with my grandmother, which is the best place for meo live, because shes really a christian lady. No drugs, no nothing. She will help me get on my feet. But the hometown might as well be a lifetime away. Currently in county jail facing murder and other charges, solomon began getting into trouble with the law at age 15. Sergeant singleton has known him ever since. Some more other stuff, man. Serious . Yeah, real serious. I have been dealing with carlton for a long time when i was an officer at juvenile. I see a good kid, a real good guy but making a lot of wrong decisions. Right now he has very serious charges this time which he says is a big mistake and misunderstanding and will get worked out. You kept that. Okay. That shocked me when i saw that on the news, my heart stopped beating for a couple seconds. I was like whoa. I want to get out this. You know, the Justice System does work. If youre incent, theyll prove youre innocent. For his sake i hope its true, because i want to see him live a prosperous life. I talk to him about changing his ways. Hell smile and say yes, sir and then i see him in trouble again. You better stop doing this to your dad. Youre putting more and more gray hairs on your dads head. You get out this time, thats it. Deep down inside, he is a good person. I want him to learn from his mistakes and make his dad proud. Today solomons father has come to the jail to visit his son. Hey, stranger. Its been a long time. I havent seen you in a long time. I met his father from visiting at juvenile and spoke with him a lot. I know he coaches football. He does a lot with the youth in his community. Its not only carlton and his own children, he looks out for other kids. I talked to your boy. For you anytime. I know youre a good dad and look out for him. My son has been accused of a horrific crime. Im here supporting my son not to find out whats going on, but i need to let him know that his family is here to support him. See my son, carlton. Im a little ashamed that i have to come in this type environment to see my son behind bars. Carlton came from a family that dont drink, dont smoke, dont dope. He came from a family who went to church and a family thats independent. I couldnt understand why carlton was drawn to the street. Carlton told me that he was bored. Carlton was being pulled through the streets. They had a great way of doing it. Solomon says while he was away in the military, his young son fell in with the wrong child. They find a weakness to the child. Once they introduce him to alcohol then gave him more alcohol. And then from that point they gave him rereefer. Then they put something in the reefer and next thing you know he has a habit. I didnt find out that he had a habit that dealt with a little cocaine. Prosecutors allege that carlton jr. Was one of three men involved in the murder of a woman. The victims brother was assaulted but survived and later identified solomon from a mug shot. If found guilty, solomon could be executed. I dont believe that my son has the capability to do Something Like that. I just dont believe it. I dont believe my son would get a gun and point at somebody and shoot somebody. I wish i could be anywhere else but here. What do you think is going to happen with your son . Well, i dont know, to be honest with you. I dont know. Hey, son. How are you doing . Let me see your fingers. Y. You my son. I dont want my son locked up nowhere. I want you to stay encouraged. I want you to keep your head up. I know, i know. Its like being in captivity. I know it sucks. Its just a modern form of slavery. Everything is based upon the past. I there will be lock up and searches 15, 20, 30 times. 30. I dont want my son harassed and bothered. I dont want my son pushed on a car and people searching him for nothing. I dont want that. Carlton sr. Acknowledges his sons problems with both the law and drugs, he believes young black men are unfairly subjected to racial profiling. Carlton has been more or less searched some 30 plus times. I couldnt understand why. After you search a child 30 times, why search him 20 more and find nothing . Seems like people are getting together and doing these things on purpose. I dont know whether the law has the justification to do that. I think its an excess of power, of force. I think its abuse. I dont think they have the right. My dad said i had nothing to do with this. I dont believe carlton would do Something Like that. Can my son be setup . I believe he can be setup. That i do believe. That i believe. If there is no evidence in there, then what are you trying to do . Make up evidence, create evidence . What are you trying to do . If its not there, its not there.
