Repercussions as 2024 candidates and the white house respond to the recent Major Supreme Court decisions. We are moving forward with another pathway to debt relief. Reporter President Biden racing to find new ways to erase student loan debt, a decision that candidate donald trump praised in South Carolina saturday. They ruled against it, 100 against it, amazing. Reporter another controversial decision is stoking divisions over gay rights, the high court found that a colorado christian web designer has a free speech right to refuse to create gay wedding web sites. Its a real victory for religious liberty. Reporter it comes as trumps main rival, Florida Governor ron desantis is under fire for his campaigns new video posted On The Last Day of pride month. Attacking trump for his past support of the lgbtq community. The video then features a sequence showing desantis hard line drag shows, transgender policy, interspersed with images of shirtless men and photos of brad pitt in the movie troy. Transportation secretary pete buttigieg, the first openly gay cabinet member was asked to respond. Im going to leave aside the strangeness of trying to prove your manhood by putting up a video that splices images of you into oiled up shirtless body builders. Reporter then questioned how that benefits the public. Who are you trying to help, make better off. Reporter some of desantiss republican rivals pushing back. We should be talking about how do we embrace our differences. Reporter Log Cabin Republicans that represents lgbtq conservatives, calling it divisive and saying desantiss rhetoric has ventured into homophobic territory. An Official Tweeting in response to criticism, Identity Politics is poison. Thanks to Kelly Odonnell is political white house correspondent, and playbook author, eugene daniels, and robert gibbs, former White House Press secretary and Former Rnc Executive Committee member, jennifer horn. We saw reaction from both sides of this desantis ad. Im going to put up polling here, some of the latest nationwide polling on key lgbtq issues. The vast majority of supportive of gay marriage. Is this clearly tailored to a primary and then the general is trying to put the tooth paste back in the tube. Thats exactly right. This is what happens when you base your entire candidacy, which is what ron desantis is doing, on cultural politics, you can eventually go too far, and folks who would generally be in support, republicans who called it homophobic. Desantis is by all accounts kind of flailing up to this point. We have a lot of time to go. He is not where he thought he was going to be or where he wanted to be and when that happens, what we now know firsthand, people start to double down on things that got them to where they are, hoping they can stir up some more fervor, will that actually work in the primary, its very possible, in the general election, this country has moved further to the left. I guess closer to where the Democratic Party is, when you talked about samesex marriage, we talked about transprotecti those things. Going too far, its not hard to do that when it comes to some of these issues. Its clear to say this is trying to run a further right campaign from trump. He could go after trump on a mountain of issues, and yet he chose this, why. Whats the overall strategy when it comes to him taking on trump over this . You know what, i cant answer that question. It is so bizarre. We live in a time when even the majority of republicans embrace the idea of equal rights for lgbtq members of our society where, you know, marriage equality, was overwhelmingly supported by the entire country including republicans, and the idea running a conservative campaign, where conservatives are supposed to be about preserving rights and to run a campaign that talks about overriding rights or trying to limit the rights of just certain people in our community makes no sense, and ill tell you that that ad, that video that desantis ran and played on this, its not just ineffective. Its really genuinely dishing, the imagery and messaging behind this over maleness, this extreme masculinity, and relating that to, you know, somehow being the opposite of homosexuality. Its really disturbing. It undermines so much of what we are supposed to be as americans, and if i may very quickly, if ron desantis is trying to use that ad to make american voters, compare him favorably in some way to brad pitt, im afraid that he has failed quite badly. Robert, when it comes to Supreme Court rulings, we have Affirmative Action, student loans, lgbtq antidiscrimination. They were all wins for the right, but we know thanks to polling and the eroding trust f the court, how do you think the left will take these losses and which party ultimately benefits more . I think it benefits the Democratic Party and hurts the Republican Party. Look, the Supreme Court has now, both at the end of last term, and fully into this term, they have put their stamp on taking rights away from people, taking protections away from people after sort of 50 years of adding those protections for people throughout this country, and then you mentioned the way the court is taking into account the ethical challenges and Clarence Thomas and samuel alito had taking vacations by wealthy donors who happen to have business in front of court. I think the real challenge here for the republican side is to try to navigate a judiciary that is, again, been focused on taking rights away. I think this will also on the left and on the democratic side, get people excited. Most of the Court Campaigns have been run on the republican side to get Republican Voters excitedment i think when you look at whats been taken away, the Dobbs Decision is the big one. These cases at the end of this term are going to be used inside the elements of the Democratic Base to get them fired up, underscore the importance of what 2024 really is all about. Eugene, black voters are grappling with the Affirmative Action ruling. I want to play reaction from Louisiana Residents over the weekend. Reporter we will not go back. I will be dead in my grave before i be a slave again. Its going to be very difficult for you to get everybody in america to buy into a color blind society. I went to a Public School in New York City so its not like i went to a Private School that, you know, maybe my application would have looked, you know, like that, or i didnt have parents that went to college, you know what i mean, like legacy, i didnt have any of that. So, you know, it definitely breaks my heart to see that thats happening. Reporter when you look at the polls, unlike abortion and student loan forgiveness, Affirmative Action splits voters down the middle. Do you think the decision from the conservative majority will hurt republicans at the ballot box . If democrats do what they should be doing, and what they say they want to do, which is make it an issue, right, the base of the Democratic Party is older black voters, its not the left. Its not young voters. Its actually older black voters, and specifically older black women. Those are some that we saw speaking just now, and so if this issue is if democrats want to make this an issue like they were able to do it with dobbs in the midterm, they can do that. There is a place for that. Like the woman said, we dont live in a color blind society. Black people know that. White people know that. Everybody knows that. Most people know that in this country and believe that, whether or not we should do anything to fix the historys ills. That is what Affirmative Action is trying to get at. The Supreme Court is saying that essentially race, especially in Higher Education is a thing of the past, also something we know isnt true, so democrats can take all of that and head into 2024, firing up their base. Anger and fear, fear of rights being taken away are both motivating factors for voters, but somebody has to point the voters in the right direction. Tell them who to be angry at and tell them what you would do if you were to give them more power, if democrats had more power in washington, d. C. They had a lot of things to do in that vein, but they seemed to be a part of that moving further toward that and making the Supreme Court more of an enemy for the Democratic Base. Jennifer, some political pundits say this race is either about trump or not trump. Im not sure if you saw from the rally in picking, South Carolina, over the weekend, i mean this is a very friendly district for him. He had a huge raucous crowd, they booed Lindsey Graham on and off the stage, calling him a traitor. Were you struck by the reception here at this rally. What does it say about the larger state of the Republican Party right now, and really the demanding lead that trump has. Well, i did see some of the coverage of the rally, and none of it surprised me, this is exactly who the Republican Party is today x if you look at the numbers, donald trump, despite being twice impeached and twice convicted, all of the other problems he has, he is holding over 60 of the republican primaries still as of just a couple of days ago. This is who the Republican Party has become. They are fighting to take rights away from people, to limit the rights of others, to, you know, to attack and assault the minority, you know, with policy, the minority in our country. This is who they have become. And donald trump gives them voice for that. And thats the conflict, by the way, that you see between trump and desantis. Desantis is trying so hard to outtrump trump. He just cant do it. Theres no way to get past that. The only good thing that i see in this gop primary right now is that at least not that either one of them, unfortunately, really has a chance to win anything, but at least governor christie and will hurd are giving voice to some of those principles or pushing back, i guess, against the ugliness that the trump and Desantis Campaign are running on. Robert, i got less than a minute with you. But President Biden will be heading to South Carolina soon as well. Do you think it can be seen that hes sort of had a rough week after all of that student loan debt, Affirmative Action, the lgbtq case, those are considered loss for the left, do you think he can use that to galvanize people . Hell use it to galvanize. I dont think any of the losses at the Supreme Court were unexpected. I mean, theres good reporting on just how much time the white house spent over the last few months after hearing lots of those arguments getting ready for what happened at the end of the term, but as everyone on the panel has said, now its time to take those words and those actions of the Supreme Court and get people fired up. I have no doubt South Carolina holds a special place for joe biden, resurrected his entire campaign. Eugene daniel, robert gibbs, thank you all. Mike pence has responded to reporting from the Washington Post that just after the 2020 president ial election, donald trump attempted to pressure Arizona Governor doug ducey Into Overturning state Election Results. The former Vice President was pressed on whether he personally influenced ducey at the biddings of his then boss and 2024 rival. I think the record reflects i did check in with not only governor ducey but governors in states that were going through the Legal Process of reviewing their Election Results. But there was no pressure involved. You are clearly saying you did not pressure the governor, but were you being pressured by mr. Trump to get those to influence doug ducey, and did you talk about this with the Special Counsel . No, i dont remember any pressure. Lets discuss this with lisa rubin, and msnbc legal analyst. Good to see you. Lets talk about a couple of things there in that piece. Pence said his call to ducey was to get an update. He passed information to trump that confirmed the Election Results. Overall, how significant is this interview and our understanding of what went down . I dont know that its that significant in terms of what went down. I do think its significant in terms of pence trying to do two things, even more politically than legally, trying to placate people who are still sympathetic to trump. He asked me to make some phone calls, and i did what he asked and reported back to them, but hes trying to preempt any accusation of wrong doing by him by saying things like i think the record reflects i made these calls. Former Vice President pence may beware, for example, of phone records that would show he reached out to people like Brad Raffensperger or brian kemp. Like a call log, we dont have an Audio Recording that we know of . Farce we know, there is no Audio Recording. The reporting over the weekend indicated that at least on governor duceys side, there was no Audio Recording of the phone call with trump. That doesnt mean necessarily that there is no recording with pence. On the other hand, i think mike pence is smart enough to know that the evidence at jack smiths disposal includes things like phone call records, right, Cell Phone Data or even text data that would indicate a reach out from one side to the other. Event if you cant see the content, in some cases, the frequency of contact, how long those phone calls lasted may be indicators of an effort by the white house to both collect and provide information to governors like then governor ducey. Pence didnt answer the question of whether he had spoken with Special Counsel jack smith about this. The Washington Post writes its unclear if ducey has been contacted by smiths office. They report that investigators in the Special Counsels office have asked witnesses about trumps calls with governors, including the one to ducey, according to two people familiar with the matter. How important would it be for the Special Counsels office to hear from pence and ducey directly on this . I think it would be important for a couple of reasons. One thing that i found particularly significant about pences interview yesterday is his telling cbs that he reported back to the president that there were no fraud in the states whose governors he reached out to. Thats an indicator of trumps intent. If trump knew at the time that pence was making those calls that the governors werent finding fraud and nonetheless, he reached out to a variety of actors in those states to continue to pressure them, to either send forth alternate electors or do other things to put in question the legitimacy of the results of the election, thats particularly significant, and similarly, i think it would be significant for investigators to hear from then governor ducey about the contents of the call. Based on the Washington Posts reporting over the weekend, it sounds like that call was a direct Dress Rehearsal for the call with Brad Raffensperger who said i just need you to find me 11,780 votes, sounds like what he said to doug ducey was similar, find me 10,000 votes. So it would be interesting to know how similar those phone calls were and what President Trump was being told both by people within his campaign, and others about the Election Results in those representative states, in terms of what we knew to be the truth on the ground as hes putting pressure on state elected officials to do something other than that. Baltimores mayor is calling sundays mass shooting at a Community Block party that killed at least two people and injured 28 others a reckless cowardly act. After 15 hours of searching for the shooter or shooters, police have no leads. Antonia hilton is with me. Whats the latest on the man hunt . Reporter we learned earlier today in a Press Conference that officials are looking for multiple people. We didnt know that in the early hours after the story broke, Sunday Morning after the Community Event turned into a chaotic and frightening scene. Officials think multiple people are responsible for 30 people shot, four people are in critical condition, and so this community is grieving right now, of course the loss of an 18yearold, of a 20yearold, and also of the other children. 14 of the 30 people shot were kids. And so there are a lot of people there that day whose lives are going to be forever changed by this. The mayor is calling on people to come forward with any kind of information that they could possibly share. Cell phone video, testimony, anyone who they are aware might have had a firearm on them that day. Take a listen to some of his remarks. We need those members in congress who said way back when when columbine happened in 1999, when i was a freshman in high school, that we wouldnt have one more because they were going to do something. When are we going to have that conversation, in addition to all of the things we need around mental health, behavioral health, trauma, all of that, but youre talking about a country where it is easier for a 14yearold kid to order pieces together to put a gun together and go out and use it and commit a crime than it is for me to get claritin d from cvs. And so this really is not just a baltimore story. Not just about this one community there called brooklyn but a national one. We have had 340 Mass Shootings to this point this year alone. You talked a little bit about it, what more can you tell us about the victims in the shooting. One is an 18yearold girl, the other is a 20yearold man. Their families have not released statements to this point. Our understanding from Community Members is they are still grieving of course, and processing the news before they say anything to the public, but, you know, i cant emphasize how much this was a community, multigenerational event. Many people were affected by this kind of violence, and studies show being a witness to this type of violence, also changes you permanently, and so people are grieving of course those two who lost their lives, but 14 other mostly children who were shot, this is going to be something that has ramifications, its something translating into calls for action across the country, for the rest of us to do something about the epidemic of violence, and proliferation of guns that are legal and illegal around the country. Traumatic for all of those people. Police in washington, d. C. Will looking for multiple possible suspects who targeted businesses with explosives early sunday. Were looking at showers and storms steam any in spots, tells you the whole story, compared to the last hour. Were looking at these Storms Blossom over the last frame. This is on a threehour loop. The Daytime Heating is getting storms going. Where you see darker closures, were seeing heavy downpours as well. It will be winds, it will be hail, the chance for tornadoes, and also some really heavy downpours. As we look towards the east. This will be the bulls eye for strong storms later this evening and into the afternoon and evening showers. Were seeing severe thunderstorm watches, you see the yellow box dotting the lines from new york to d. C. , norfolk, and raleigh. Were looking at tiny dots here. Those were the scattered storms. Not everyone will see storms, but some will. Were looking at severe Thunderstorm Warnings already. That is in the orange, and this will be the story as we head throughout the overnight hours too as we look towards portions of the west. Were looking along the gulf coast and southeast. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings as well. 34 million americans under a Severe Weather risk. That includes chance for winds gusting over 60 Miles Per Hour. We can see winds gusting in the inner mountain west, 80 Miles Per Hour in some spots, especially where you see the orange area. Could see damaging hail as well. The chance of a tornado. That threat is low tonight. But its not zero, so we still need to watch that. As we look along the east coast here, d. C. , richmond, cape hatteras, seeing the threat for Severe Weather. Already seeing Storms Blossom. Were going to watch that closely over the next couple of hours. This is july 4th, looking at 14 million americans under the risk for severe storms. Once again, winds gusting over 60 Miles Per Hour. The chance of hail with a diameter of an inch or larger. We have another area of enhanced risk, thats the highest risk and likely scenario for storms from minneapolis to sioux falls, north plat, denver and selina. Thats the stormy part of the story. As far as the Severe Weather goes, we have been talking about heat for weeks and weeks and weeks. We have the heat dome tacked into place. It didnt budge. Were looking at the southwest with really high temperatures. Some temperatures up to 119 in some spots, 120 in others. Thats going to take hold in the pacific northwest. Portland, medford, minneapolis, the Southeast Carolinas were also heating up as well. You factor in the humidity there. Its going to feel warmer than it is. As we look at the heat, the numbers are kind of unbelievable out west. Las vegas 112 today. 7 degrees above what is typical for this time of year. Palm springs, 119. 88 degrees in portland, and boise into the 90s as well. That is today and tomorrow as well. Then were looking at portions of the midwest. This heat does expand to the north. Madison, wisconsin, 91 degrees. Almost 10 degrees above what is expected. 92 in sioux falls. 95 in little rock, as we go throughout tomorrow. This is july 4th out and about with parades, have the sprinklers out, get in the airconditioning and shade, temperatures in the 90s in chicago. 91 degrees there. Thats 8 degrees above what is typical for this time of year. 82 in cleveland. Were warm at 93. The steam does continue, the Stormy Weather continues. Were going to track this all night long. The ft aapproved a Ground Breaking blood test for a condition that causes 10 of deaths. Preeclampsia, a severe form of high Blood Pressure in pregnant women. The New York Times reports it could have contributed to the recent death of Olympic Gold Medal is, torie bowie. Dr. John torres joins us now. Preeclampsia affects a lot of women during pregnancy, and the problem is its often hard to diagnose because one of the conditions of preeclampsia are pregnant and swelling of the hands and feet which can be common during pregnancy anyway. The difficulty is who need to come to the hospital, and who can go home. What this blood test is doing is measuring two different proteins that the placenta is putting out into the body. If those proteins are unbalanced, one is really high, and one is really low, this indicates theres a higher chance of them developing preeclampsia. If theyre more normalized, that tells us theyre probably not going to develop it, at least over a two week period, we can send them home and them them in two weeks to see if this is a condition they have. This could be a life saving blood test, if they are in the hospital and develop this condition, they are at the place they need to be. How Game Changing could this test be for women at risk. You mentioned the symptoms are hard to identify, is it pree preeclampsia, and is it true they could be fine one day, and. Thats right. It could develop into preeclampsia, they can develop liver issues, and they could lose the baby. Game changing and life saving which are two things we want to test, and this looks like it could be both. The New York Times reports this is the first step forward in diagnosis for preeclampsia since the condition was discovered in 1900. How and why did it take so long . This is one of the conditions that it has been hard to untie the knot of why its happening, and how we can detect it. It has these symptoms that can be symptoms of pregnancy, and its hard to separate those, and its harder to find out who its going to progress on to severe preeclampsia, thats what this test is offering us and will give us, and thats why its an important test. Today in the suburbs of paris, hundreds rallied in support of the mayor who said his family was attacked by rioter over the weekend. According to mayor jean brun, rioters fired rockets at his fleeing wife and children. The incident is being investigated as an assassination attempt. A potential Inflection Point in the protests that have engulfed france over the past week after police shot and killed a teen boy during a traffic stop. Over five nights, more than a thousand people were arrested as protesters clashed with police and set fires to cars and public buildings. Nbc news Foreign Correspondent matt bradley is reporting from paris. Matt, what are you seeing right now . Reporter were actually seeing Police Officers taking up positions around city hall in this town where i am, on the outskirts of paris. This is something they have been doing for the past week and something they will probably continue doing. This town hall is surrounded by razor wire and fences. Thats because it was under attack as are some of the other place in this town, beaten up and scratched up by protesters. This is something were seeing despite the fact that it looks as though the wave of violence that struck this country is finally beginning to ebb. 157 people were arrested last night, and that is actually a very low number. It doesnt sound like it, but its quite a lot lower than the more than 1,300 people arrested overnight on friday night. Were starting to see what looks like a subsiding of this violence, and that might be because the Family Members of nahel have bedding and pleaded with protesters to stop the destruction nationwide. They dont want to see so much of the violence that they have been saying, and they especially dont want it to be done in the name of nahel, their son, and so nahels grandmother went on television over the weekend and pleaded with protesters to go home, and stop destroying things. And, you know, weve also been treated or the French Public has seen shocking images over the last week of violence of the worst kind in recent memory. This is a country that is very used to street level violence, and has been going on, its almost part of the heritage here. Its been going on for decades. So this is a shocking last week, and the fact of the matter is people here are getting tired of it, and were finally starting to see what looks like the tide of public order and Public Opinion turning in favor of the government and the police. We had a march here in this town just a couple of hours ago, when people were taking to the streets saying enough is enough, we want to see an end to these violent protests. Lindsay. You mentioned the government there. What kind of political pressure has Emmanuel Macron been faced with over this . Reporter well, thats an interesting question, you know, Emmanuel Macron is facing a lot of pressure from the right wing, they think hes feckless, they want him to impose a State Of Emergency that would broaden police powers, allow them to detain more protesters and hold them for longer, and on the left, hes facing increasing pressure by some to essentially try to impose some sort of reform on police and the judicial system, and thats something that hes trying to sort of navigate between, but remember, this is a president who has faced years, ever since he arrived in office, of street level violence and protests, whether they be the yellow vests or the retirement age protests that we saw just a couple of weeks ago. I was here covering that as well. And, you know, this is a president who has managed to to navigate the choppy waters of french politics for quite a long time. While he seems to be at his lowest level of popularity, theres no one on either wing that can take up the mantle of centrist president that will appease everyone. While Emmanuel Macron is facing a lot of pressure and under a lot of fire, its unclear whether this is really going to dent his popularity when there arent suitable candidates to stand against him. Nbcs matt bradley, thank you. We are also following developments in the west bank where israel has vowed that is Counter Terrorism operation against Palestinian Militants will go on as long as it takes. Nbcs Josh Lederman is back with us. There were reports of gunfights near a west bank mosque earlier today. Whats the latest on the situation there . Reporter well, the Israeli Military held a briefing not long ago for reporters where they confirmed that. They said that Palestinian Militants were firing at these Israeli Forces from Inside Mosque and so the Israeli Forces entered that mosque. According to the spokesperson for the Israeli Military who also said that inside that mosque were not only weapons but also explosive devices and claimed that militants were actually using the mosque to try to build tunnels to carry out Terror Attacks, and so that is one vivid example of the type of exchange of violence that we have continued to see for close to 24 hours now in this massive israeli incursion, the largest in decades into the occupied west bank to carry out what the israelis are describing as Counter Terrorism with Prime Minister netanyahu a short while ago, describing the refugee camp as a nest of terrorists. The palestinians are saying this is barbaric and the Palestinian Authority has announced they are cutting off all Security Cooperation with israel, meaning that the p. A. Will no longer be providing intelligence they may pick up about potential terror threats emanating from the west bank to Israeli Forces. So the diplomatic situation clearly deteriorating, the military situation deteriorating and the question is how long is this going to go on because the Israeli Government has made clear this is not a quick in and out operation. They are going to continue at this potentially for days until they feel like they have rooted out this threat. But the military saying they believe there have been 50 or so Terror Attacks by palestinians that have emanated from this area of jeannine. The palestinians calling for an Urgent Security Council meeting saying they want to see the International Community try to put a stop to this. And Benjamin Netanyahu is facing pressure from all sides. What could you tell me about that . Reporter that is right. It is at the same time that the Israeli Military was caring out this operation that we saw hundreds of protests at the airport protesting the proposed judicial overhaul. He then put it on ice for a while and now it is back, although in a slightly modified form. So the protests are back. So hes getting pressure from the left. But also under intense pressure from the right. Frankly from within his own government from far right ministers who not only want to see expanded settlement building within the west bank, lindsey, but they also want to see a full scale Military Operation to try to root out this terrorism they say is emanating from the west bank so netanyahu under pressure to go even further than he has in the last 24 hours with Military Operations in the occupied west bank and the big question is how much farther might he go than he has already.
