First we find ourselves in a mind bending stretch of days. The latest poll from cbs news and ugov shows joe biden and Bernie Sanders tied for the lead at 25 each. Some shows of force from candidates this weekend. The Sanders Campaign says 3,000 people were in attendance. And at andrew yangs, a field organizer said we are past the fire code. That shows that 46 of americans approve of the job that President Trump is doing while 51 disapprove. Whats happening back home in washington after the republican majority succeeded in blocking witnesses in the impeachment trial . A vote on the final verdict set for wednesday. After tomorrows caucuses, President Trump will enter the House Chamber as a president technically still on trial. It also means that the world is getting john boltons thoughts on kpeksit and venezuela instead of his firsthand knowledge about the president s Pressure Campaign against ukraine. And with that i would like to welcome in my allstar panel, katy tur, chief correspondent balancing volz, Politico Magazine tim alberta, and an msnbc contributor, careen jean pier. Welcome. Dan volz, we really have no idea whos going to come out on top . No we dont. The polls most of them have shown senator sanders and Vice President biden kind of up top, but a mashup overall. In talking to campaigns through friday before everybody arrived again for real campaigning everybody parachuted back in here. Yeah. I got the sense that the other campaigns believed that Bernie Sanders would turn out the most voters on caucus night. But not that he necessarily would lead on delegates by the time everybody does their realigning. So there is a lot of uncertainty. As you know, the order of finish, even if close, will have some impact Going Forward and perhaps a real impact. Katy, youve been here for the last week. Whats your sense . What have you learned . I want to echo what dan was saying, the other campaigns do feel like Bernie Sanders is the big threat. But Bernie Sanders campaigning with aungt acting confident, they are unwilling to say they are planning on a victoryvictory party. I think its called expectation setting. Exactly. The biggest thing ive noticed is that voters continually say theyre not quite sure who they like. There are Bernie Sanders voters all about him, same as warren, biden as well. Once you get past the first handful of people, its, im not quite sure im going to make my decision on caucus night. Remember, this is all about peer pressure. When you walk into that room and your friends and neighbors are caucusing for biden and youre considering warren, are you going to move or over to your friends and neighbors . Its going to be about ground game, who you no he in that room. I dont think we should trust any single poll right now. I think we probably learned that lesson, fingers crossed. Careen, you have been in the trenches on all of this, talking to the campaigns. Whats your sense of where things stand here . And what happens if Bernie Sanders comes out the victor . Its so wild, because really echoing what you guys have been saying, it is so fluid. When you look at the polls and you dig down just a little bit deeper, you see people who havent made a decision or people who could be convinced to go with someone else. We didnt see this in 2008, 2016. So the question is, what type of electr electr elect trat is going to come out . Is it going to be, we want change . Or is it comfort . 2004 or 2008 . Its going to be high turnout. A lot of folks believe that. People have suggested it might be the highest ever. Right. Which means a lot in that environment. Tim alberta, how in your view does the impeachment process we have been so hyper focused on in washington, how is it affecting whats going on out here if at all . I think its probably more minimal than anybody might think. Democrats who were fired up are already going to be caucusing. Those who have tuned it out, theyre perhaps a lower propensity caucus goer. But there are two things to watch, the first to your point, the undecideds. We dont know how that last 20 to 25 of the caucus going electorate. Marco rubio had been poling low, but he wound up higher. There is a sense even among the Sanders Campaign that somebody could break late. I think the other thing is watch is nobody is talking about joe biden that much because his crowds are small, not a huge enthusiasm on the ground. But joe biden isnt that rock star, isnt that cause. People who are going to caucus for him are not going to drive across the state. He could be sneaky strong in a way we dont necessarily suspect at this point. This was the argument, i talked to both the former Vice President and governor vil sak last week, and basic put that same question to them, your crowds are smaller, they are less enthusiastic than we are seeing for others. How much does that concern you . Vice President Biden brushed it off. Vil sak said people know him, respect him, like him, dont have to come out to events. You should not equate that to what might happen on caucus night. Lets pick up on that. You made this argument a lot covering trump. People would say, listen, the folks coming to trump, its a friday night and wherever, what are you going to do on that friday night . Go to the movies or the show that is donald trump . Oh, it is just a show. Theyre there to experience it, not serious about voting for him. That was what i heard over and over and over again. And these were people that would sit out overnight in the snow to wait to get inside. They were not only enthusiastic. They were completely committed to going to vote for him. I will say on thursday he was here in des moines, and there were people who were waiting overnight to see him once again. And these are people that have seen him before. He had a 7,000person at capacity crowd, fire marshal shut people out. Its not me rooting for donald trump, or rooting for a democrat, when youre looking at enthusiasm, it can matter. Donald trump stills maintains a lot in these states which cou. I have been at home covering impeachment until recently. Im relying on you guys welcome to the real world. To bring me the real scoop from here in iowa. But i have heard people make comparisons when you talk about the size of joe bidens crowds, they compare that to Hillary Clinton and what happened in 2016. Hey, can we beat donald trump with somebody who doesnt necessarily have the same kind of enthusiasm that we know from our lessons in 2016 can make a difference . Enthusiasm i agree with katy, it matters, especially with an iowa caucus in particular, because thats happening tomorrow. Youre asking people to do a lot, take time off, go and caucus for you, go against their neighbors. Thats a lot. The only way you get folks to do that is if theyre enthusiastic and excited about your campaign. When you look at the general election, i say this all the time, democrats are going to need a movement to beat donald trump. Yes, hes incredibly unpopular. Impeachment is insane right now. But they have to expand their base, get people who dont come out to vote. And that means you need enthusiasm. Dans latest piece in the washington post, its about tomorrows caucuses, while the party over the past three years has struggled to answer a basic question, how do you beat trump, the results from here will offer the first moments of clarity. Its a question of whether the party wants to move towards candidates that would bring a democratic revolution to countertrumps republican one or whether the party wants a more traditional nominee who would run on uncontroversial issues. This seems to be the biden versus bernie in a nutshell. And i think so prior to the last ten days or so, it looked as though this race might be heading toward biden versus bernie. Well get a better sense of that tomorrow night. Nonetheless, thats a clear cleavage within the party. And i think what the biden folks are counting on is in the end, people who are undecided will go for a safer choice rather than take a risk. But that could be a risk for the partys one thing i have been turning over, i covered Bernie Sanders campaign on the road for months in 2016, and he ran it all the way to the very end. And as democrats are grappling with this challenge, im wondering if there isnt something going on with the electorate and Bernie Sanders team gets upset when you compare him to donald trump. But at the same time he seems to have tapped into an anger in the democratic electorate and expanded it in a populist way that reminds me of some of the anger we heard from trump voters. Do you sense that . Definitely. Its over some of the same issues. Trade. That argument within the Democratic Party over base mobilization versus persuasion, how do we beat trump, bernie is the one candidate who sits at the nexus and says i can do both. Whether he can or not remains to be seen. If you look at the democratic socialists or more progressives, in 2018, democrats took back the house not on a boldly progressive vision but on dozens of these very disciplined, centerleft, moderate candidates who talked about lowering health care, working with the Republican Party, fighting against gun control efforts. This was not a liberal message. Thats a great point. Im wondering, they all voted to impeach the president. How does that affect things . Thats where it gets interesting. If you look at wisconsin, theres a belief that donald trump was this political phenomenon and won that no one could have. He won fewer than mitt romney. Donald trump won. Whats the common denominator there . Its not that donald trump was able to turn out masses of voters who had never been willing to vote for a republican. It was that democrats nominated someone who did not connect. If theyre able to rectify that in 2016 donald trump will have a harder time hanging on. Thanks. With some of his democratic rieskd of rivals died up in washington, former Vice President joe biden has been trying to take advantage of their absence. Mike menoli has been about him just about every step of the way for quite a few years. He joins us with his exclusive interview. Mike, where does everything stand . Reporter well, it was thant long ago where it seemed that the Biden Campaign was writing off iowa. But since they launched that no malarkey bus tour in november, they have been all in here. As caucus day has grown closer, the pressure has been building, as we saw first hand this week. Another day in iowa, another day on the bus. Want to go for a bus ride . Thanksds for letting me go with you. Nine months after he launched his bid, he still pro jergted confidence. What does your gut tell you . Things are going well. And its not inconsistent with the poll. In the last week of the campaign with many of his rivals tied up in washington, he blitzed the state, 23 events in nine days. In between, using his time on the bus to lock up precinct captains, check up with family, rally allies. Theres not a wasted movement in on this bus. People think you do an event, drive, take time off in between. Not a lot. On stage, bidens Closing Argument for the caucuses has been more like a general election. Ladies and gentlemen, in november, america will have a chance to answer the question, does the character of a president matter . 17 republicans thought they knew how to beat donald trump and lost to him. Hillary clinton thought she knew how to beat donald trump, lost the general election to him. What makes you think you know how to beat donald trump, your way of beating him is the right way, and can we . I think theres two things. One, everybody is on to him now. I think the way to go after donald trump is to point out what he hasnt done, point out what he wont do, and point out why its important, the bad things he has done, how badly its hurt the country and hurt our character as a country. While he emphasizes oneonone connections, the Vice President battling the perception of enthusiasm gap. You seem to be making the pitch for the head and not the heart . I think it is both, the vaft majority of the American People know me, and i think they by and large, based on polling data, the good news we they know me. The bad news, they know me. Attacks on me and my weaknesses are real. But the attacks on my strengths. Electability . We have to get a good democratic in there. Hes our man, the one thats going to beat trump. Thats the biggest selling point . Absolutely. As polls show a tightening primary battle, biden turned up the heat on Bernie Sanders. His dilemma from my perspective is that he is not being trait forward on how hes going to get done what hes suggesting and the cost of what hes suggesting. Biden insists iowa wont be makeorbreak for his candidacy, taking a long view of the race . Nothing happens here on monday thats going to end this campaign. Its a very different circumstance than it has been in the past. And i think its going to be a really tough contest here. One of the things that i think youre going to see a bunch of us coming out bufrmgd up. And thats going to be fine. I mean id rather have an hour i win, dont get my wrong. I think i have a firewall in South Carolina. And then we go into the super tuesday states that have significant number of minorities and afternoricanamericans runni think im going to do fine. No regrets . No. The only thing i made a commitment to beau, than i would run, but that i would not back away from things ive always done and cared about. And so there is no regret. As long as i do my best and as beau would say, remember home base, be who you are and make your case, if my case can be made in a way that people accept it, all the better. If they dont, they dont. We continued that part of the conversation ininformally, biden saying if beau had run hed be 51yearold president. But the real reason hes running is because of donald trump. So, mike, great interview, always illuminating. Biden used the phrase, taking the long view of this campaign. How are they currently thinking about Mike Bloomberg and the pressure hes potentially putting on the Biden Campaign . They are essentially making the argument behind the scenes were going to be here in the event joe biden falls apart in iowa and New Hampshire and theres serious concern about whether biden can go the distance if he doesnt perform in these first two states. How is the Campaign Thinking about that, worrying about that, or not . You hit the nail on the head, because on paper the campaign believes they can win a long delegate battle if thats what this turns out to be. In reality they know if it falls short here in iowa, the narrative is going to be about a weak frontrunner. That leads to donors holding back their cash, and that could prove to be fatal. Biden has been spending every dollar as quickly as it comes in. Hes had help from a super pac. But when you look at super tuesday and how many states including california, they wont have the resources to compete with Mike Bloomberg. Hell be waiting to make the argument, biden had his turn and couldnt get it done. Now get behind me. All right, mike memoli, thanks. The panel is back, including president and ceo of vo toe latino, maria teresa ca maur. What did you hear from caucus goers . What ive heard from people that show up, they want to see him come out and fight. They want to see him punch back at the pred. They want to see him defend himself and his family forcefully. I was talking to a couple that came in and they liked Amy Klobuchar. But they were there at the biden event because they wanted him to take on this president because they femt he was slandering him. They were ready to be suewayed that room, they walked away not swayed. That seems like a loss for the campaign. I kept going back and forth with simone sanders. I tried to get biden but he walked by me. But mike memoli. Sanders on this, i said why doesnt he do that . She said were not going to play the president s game. Ive been hearing people on the trail that say they wanted biden do try and testify, wanted to see him confront his former colleagues, the people hes known for decades in the senate and look them in the eye and say you know this isnt true and youre only doing this for the president. They want to see him show he can take the president on directly. The impeachment trial going back on, in washington, has meant that the biden name has been on the floor of the senate probably more times than theyd want. Mike asked joe biden about his son hunter and everything thats been playing out there. Lets watch. Well, first of all, there are no charges. I mean, thats thats kind of fascinating. The charge is he was on a board. What it is is it looks bad. And so thats number one. Number two, the reason not to testify, you play into his hands. Everything hes always done, whenever trouble has gotten in, hes tried to divert the attention to Something Else that has nothing to do with the charge against him. Maria teresa kumar . You dont lead with what the other side is accusing of you. He should be saying this is not about me or about hunter or about any of the impli cases that retire trying to push. This is about the constitution and is the senate upholding their law. They are trying to bring me as a witness, but we know it is all on the hands of the president and we have the receipts to prove it. Instead the moment you start explaining, youre losing. He sounds like hes weakened by it. I think exactly the same thing. I would say look, donald trump is scared of me. Hes scared if im the nominee im going to beat him. Thats what hes trying to do, using his power of the office to do that. And you know what . Hes right. I am going to beat him. Its not about me or my son. Its about donald trump. And he is the problem. Dan volls, whats your takeaway about this . Lets set aside the hunter biden. His performance on the stump has lacked the kind of energy you would expect to see in somebody who has been through this several times, who knows whats at stake. I was struck the other day that at two events, he gave his speech, answered questions, et cetera, and then he sat down and governor vil sack got up and made the argument for why you need to vote for him as opposed to him doing that. He almost seemed to be shrinking back from the camera you wouldnt anticipate from somebody who is used to being so forward and in the front of our public life . You would expect every candidate to be truly leaning in and making that pitch. He hasnt done that. On the question of hunter biden, i talked to a woman earlier in the month, again yesterday about she was undecided. Shes now with klobuchar. One of the points she made about biden was, she said, i think they, being donald trump and the republicans, have already effectively made that case about hunter against him, and it will be around his neck for the entire general elects. I dont know whether thats true or not but thats the perception of some voters who might otherwise think he would be an effective candidate. Theres a lot of dissonance around his candidacy right now. The question undecided voters are making, do we take what we think is perhaps a safe choice without being fully sure thats the safe choice . Its interesting. The people having those conversations seem to be gravitating to Amy Klobuchar. Is she the sleeper candidate . She the one that comes out winning . I wonder about that. She showed up here the other night when the senate trial adjourned a little bit earlier, and she packed a room up in council bluffs, packed a bar on four hours notice. It was a dynamic crowd. She was pitching them and talking a lot about impeachment and talking about how she has to be there, but listen, im somebody who can work with the other side. Im from minnesota. I turned counties blue that were red. She had 850 or 750 people at an event the other day. That is considerably bigger than what biden is getting. And shes raising money. As the second choice if not the first. I will say she has been working very, very hard through this impeachment process. She has been in front of every camera making her pitch and flying out here late nights, early mornings. Well see if it pays off. Thank you so much for your reporting. Thank you. [ applause ] senator Bernie Sanders trying to put out rekindled flames of the fight between himself and Hillary Clinton after Rashida Tlaib did this on friday. I dont robe if you guys remember last week when someone by the name of Hillary Clinton said that nobody were not going to boo. Were classy here. No, no, ill boo. Boo. [ laughter ] you all know i cant be quiet, no, were going to boo. Thats all right. The haters, the haters will shut up on monday when we win. There we go. Tlaib has since apologized saying in a statement, i allowed my disappointment with secretary clintons latest comments about senator sanders and his supporters to get the best of me approximately you all, my sisters in service on stage, and our movement deserve better. This raises another issue within the electability argument, who is the candidate who can unify the party . Joining me now, msnbc road warrior Shaq Brewster following the Sanders Campaign. This came at an unfortunate time for the Sanders Campaign just days ahead of the caucuses. Are they concerned about this fight that has reexploded . The quote from Hillary Clinton in that magazine piece, saying of sanders, nobody likes him . Right. There was that documentary, t podcast taping, whether she went after sanders, saying he didnt do enough and they didnt do enough to unify the party in 2016. This is a distraction for the Sanders Campaign, especially when you have a candidate who was in washington, d. C. , not able to be here in iowa making his case to voters. They wanted to be focused on their closing message of turning out people, of their coalition that they have there. This is something that pulled them aside from that. One of the more understated elements of this backandforth, it wasnt opposite campaigns or rival campaigns that brought up this clip and sent around this clip that you just played with Rasheed Tlaib there. It was many of sanders supporters who sent this out and said, thank you, congresswoman tlaib for fighting for us. Theres a deep divide that exists among sanders supporters and other democrats in this race, from a feeling of the establishment is pushing back. They see sanders growing, his poll numbers increasing, they feel like theres a sense that just like they believe what happened in 2016, that this time around theres someone, some entry, group of people who are going to try to take this away from the people. So thats why theres this growing sense. And thats why there are people so willing to send this around. It spoke to a divide that is already there among senator sanders supporters. And maria teresa kumar, how do democrats solve this . Sanders supporters are extremely angry about what happened to him in 2016. They perceive it in a way that really gets everybody going, quite frankly. Youve started to see that coming up again . None of this is helpful for the voters that were going to need in order to win the white house on the progressive side. I mean that for better or worse, Bernie Sanders is physically expanding the electoral base. He is going deep and bringing in a lot of africanamerican youth, young people, latinos, in ways the other candidates arent doing. If he is not the nominee, he needs to make sure everybody is lockstep with him to make sure the new voters that hes expanding come out next november. So having any candidate right now beat themselves up and trying to basically do the work of the right is not helpful. And so the more that they can actually have these conversations of saying, our job today is to beat donald trump at any cost and we are going to stand by the nominee and my voters will stand with me, that has to be the message. How does Elizabeth Warren fit into all of this . Here is how she framed a unity argument trying to bring together many. I also want to say a thank you to everybody who got into this president ial race. There are some who are still in. There are some who arent still in. But i want everyone to stop to think that the folks who did this, it is hard to do this. And people have to sacrifice a lot to do it. The people who did it did it for a love of country. And they brought their good ideas. They brought their enthusiasm. They brought their talent. And our job as a Democratic Party is both to say thank you and to come together to beat donald trump. The ad theyre putting in showcases caucuses for bernie and trump saying im going to caucus for Elizabeth Warren . I think a lot are trying to differentiate themselves while not angering the supporters for the other candidates. Pe wa they want to be able to bring everybody under that tent. If youre not going to get every single democratic voter out to vote for you and off their couch in 20 in november, then they stand to lose to donald trump. There is a great fear that what happened to Hillary Clinton can happen to them if they dont turn out everybody, not just in the total vote but in those significant places, in michigan and wisconsin and minnesota potentially here in iowa, ohio, that did not show up. They dont want to anger anyone. That includes especially South Carolina, and the first real test with africanamerican voters who really in many ways are the backbone of the party and the primary and also of course a critical con ststituen to turn out if youre the democratic nominee. Theres a new poll out of South Carolina that shows bernie father ahead than before. 20 , thats higher than where he has been. Do you think theres a world in which Bernie Sanders can generate support from the africanamerican base of the Democratic Party . I think so. I think this time around in 2020 he has made an effort to expand his base and make it more diverse. If you remember if 2016, when it got to more diverse states, he didnt do as well. And so as you were saying, maria, he is expanding especially with young voters, young latin, africanamerican voters, nevada is going to be interesting. Theres a Latin Community thats excited about Bernie Sanders. They have been much more smarter about it. If democrats relitigate 2016, they are going to lose. Donald trump is gaining. Bernie sanders isnt the problem, Hillary Clinton isnt, its donald trump. The challenge her messaging about unity, the sign she was holding, the best candidate money cannot buy, thats a direct dig with bloomberg and stierz. She has to make sure the messaging is all on. One of the snapshots we were hoping to get the Des Moines Register poll. It was ultimately canceled. What that leaves us with is seeing things for ourselves like this massive Bernie Sanders crowd in cedar rapids last night and relying on the kindness of people who know this state best, like principle and cornerstone, matt paul, and the chairman of the iowa Democratic Party troy price. Thank you for being here. Thanks. I want to talk about what we are missing from our posts back inside the beltway and frankly there has been so many focus, as this process has unfolded on the events inside the beltway because donald trump is president , and so all of the news is coming straight out of the white house for a lot of us. Let me start with you, troy. What is different about this year in iowa that you think is worth highlighting . I think well, one thing i think is just the number of candidates that we have, the number of great candidates we have still here at the last minute. Sure. Theres so many undecideds walking in. I think this is going to get decided in the room tomorrow night. We were talking a little bit before we came on about rural areas of the state and democratic enthusiasm across the board. What are you seeing happening there . What does that have to do with President Trump, if anything . Well, in 2016, President Trump did very well in the rural parts of the state. But right now were seeing a lot of excitement and a lot of energy out in these parts of the place state that democrats havent been doing as hadnt been doing as well in. I saw a candidate up in orange city, iowa, sioux i saw a president ial candidate up there that had 250 people there. There are people in all corners, and its really exciting right now. Thats what these caucuses do, help bring people out. Matt paul, you ran the state for Hillary Clinton obviously. The results i remember flying out of here, the results were contested, shall we say, by the Bernie Sanders campaign. I was on the plane as we headed out of iowa last time. Theres no doubt Hillary Clinton came in here and built a Real Organization in iowa after a negati negative experience in 2008. Who do you see doing that this time around . Whose arguization is in the best position . I think these campaigns have been here for over a year. This is a very long weekend for them. Troy and i went through this last cycle, and this is the longest four days of their life this final weekend, especially with the impeachment, especially going into super bowl weekend. Youre a day out from the caucuses. You cant knock on doors, anger somebody whos getting ready for the chiefs and 49ers game. Its hard for them. Its true. Its true. You feel for them. They got to throw their super bowl parties. No other way to get voters to show up. I think weve seen Elizabeth Warren has had a Strong Organization here. Senator sanders has done this, like Hillary Clinton. He has come back to iowa. Good candidates get better. Good campaigns get better over time. And i give him credit for building off of what he had in 2016. Theres been some speculation that the bernie team or perhaps any of one of these campaigns might try to declare themselves the winner here in iowa before there are official results. Smart strategy or not . Risky. You know, listen, the caucuses are not perfect, but the caucuses have remained first because theyve always improved. The iowa Democratic Party has worked hard. The chairman can talk about this better than i can. But the transparency has increased. Youll see those initial alignment numbers when people break into their group the first time, which is going to be important. But what matters is the state delegates coming out of this. How do you become the democratic nominee . Milwaukee. Troy, how do you respond the critics particularly inside the party who say you know what, iowa is great but it looks nothing like our party looks nothing like the rest of the country . The demographics of iowa what are they are. But what we have done as a party, and what caucuses allow us to do is to be able to always improve, always change ways to bring more people into the process. For example, this year we have satellite caucusing for the officers time. We have sites targeting different communities whose voices havent always been heard. We have Spanish Language sites for example. We have sites targeting people with disabilities. We have been working to proactively put span language translators in sites where we think there will be need to make sure we are ready for that so we can make sure the process is more accessible. Over the course of this we are going to bring more people out. You work on the issues of turning out voters. Right. How has it looked from your perspective in terms of what the chairman has been talking about. Voter lateino yesterday talkd to 10,000 caucus voters, encouraging them to participate. The people that were doing the calling, the texting, there was about 30 people in the room, they were all young people. When i asked them, are you going to how many times are you going to register to vote, they are like this is my officers caucus and i have never done it before and i am 18 years old. Iowa represents what is happening in the rest of the country. The majority of whites in this country are 54, the majority of latinos are 19. Thats reflecting the wave that is coming this year. We will talk about that and much more in the next hour. Thank you guys so much for being here. We will have much more to come on this iowa caucus edition of kasie dc. We are live from java joes. E f. Bruce, babbitt, if he does well at all, thats better than expected. Ditto Jesse Jackson who gets first prize for the most famous photo of the iowa campaign. That is a vintage photo. This is a tradition like no other, the caucuses here in iowa. They have picked president s, especially on the democratic side. We want to say thank you to all of you who came out this afternoon to watch with us. Linda and dennis have never missed a caucus i am told in the 56 years you have been married. Are you on the same side . No. Why not . Who are you caucusing for . Elizabeth warren. And you, sir . Bernie sanders. Bernie sanders . Why Bernie Sanders . I think he has the best chance of uniting the country. We need the unite the country. And you, why Elizabeth Warren . I like the thing she is running on. I think we need time limits, too. And i think it is time for a woman. Time for a woman. There you go. We are live here in des moines. We have another hour of kasie dc coming up from java joes when we come back. Im your 70lb st. Welcome back to the second hour of our very special Iowa Caucuses edition of kasie dc live from java joes in des moines, where else would you want to be one day away are the iowa caucus. By the way, it is also groundhog day. We wanted to take you back four years the an iowa moment that we never get tired of reliving. What is your favorite county in iowa . I am not not going to get into this, because this is not a history class. One of my favorite place is iowa sit self, iowa is great, because the people are great. The people are workersing wonderful people, they like me and i like them. There are 99 counties in iowa. I can name more than one, i am not doing history. Such as . Like who is the president of a certain country. We dont do that. That was five years ago. Now that man, president of the United States. He did not win here in iowa. I would like to point out. The question that all democrats are asking in this state, above policy questions, is who can beat donald trump . There is a lot of discussion, as you know, about electability. I have won literally every race i have ever run. Back to fourth grade. Took on trump all over the country. And we beat him. In fact, we beat him like a drum. People who are betting real cash on this have me as the heaviest favorite to beat donald trump. Put on your practical iowa hats and really think not about what you necessarily want or it is not about us as individuals. The president s Approval Rating has actually ticked up compared to where it was before impeachment. The nbc news wall street journal poll out just today the president is at 46 approval. Almost the highest rating of his entire presidency. The president was here in iowa just last week. And Mick Mulvaney and more than 80 republican surrogates are coming tomorrow. Perhaps no one frames the political moment we are in quite like republican senator Lamar Alexander whose decision mott the call witnesses in the impeachment trial was seen as the Pivotal Moment this week. He shouldnt have done it now i think it is up to the American People to say, okay, good economy, lower taxes, conservative judges, behavior that i might not like, call to ukraine, weigh that against Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders and pick a president. Joining me on set a reporter for the New York Times and an msnbc contributor jeremy peters. From the woechlt jenna johnson. Alexi mchammond, and former senior advise or to the jeb bush 2016 Campaign David koch. Great to have you guys. Jenna, it is your first time on our show. It is great to have you. You have been following these candidates for so long now. I just i am interested in kind the observations you have been making in the last day or two about who really in the Democratic Party is capable of doing what its voters are demanding, which is beating the president . I mean if there was an easy answer to that, the caucuses wouldnt be so confusing right now. But people are divided on what it is actually going to take to beat donald trump. Is it someone who can appeal to moderates . Is it someone who can win over republicans who are fed up with trump . It is someone who can marshal a major movement, who can pull in new voters to the process . People cant really agree on that. Thats why we dont really have a super clear idea of what is going to clearly win the caucuses tomorrow night. Jeremy, why is the clear answer to this question not joe biden as we sit here one day before the caucus . I dont know that it is. I think that we really have yet to see joe biden tested and under the spotlight for an extended period of time just the see how well he holds up, how well voters respond to him. I have got to say, i saw him yesterday in cedar rapids, and there was an energy there. He really roused the crowd. The audience was engaged to an extent that i didnt see with some of the other candidates i was out on the road with yesterday and over the past couple of days. No, he had a connection with his audience that was unique, at least what i have seep so far. Alexi, what has your reporting been on the ground the past week . We talk about voters viability, someone like senator klobuchar who might not reach the 15 viability threshold. I asked voters who would you caucus for if they didnt meet the threshold, the overwhelming answer is joe biden. Moderate, charismatic is what is going to take to beat donald trump. I was at a round table with Senior Advisers from petes campaign yesterday. I asked them that question, what do you define what it takes to beat donald trump . He said building a Large Coalition . What does that mean. Winning over disaffected republicans it seems like a huge task to fill but it is all of the questions floating around that leads to the results where it looks like a jump ball this this fourway race right now. What did you learn in 2016 that you think democrats should apply in this case . We doesnt understand what electability really means. Two competing arguments are out will and theatre is winning out. One is we have got to win back the obama trump voters. Right. Then mostly the sanders folk are saying we have got energize new people, bring new people into the process. I dont think that anybody knows which of those two arguments is right. I think if you could find a candidate that could sort of thread both of those arguments. Yeah. That might be buttegeig at this point, thats going to be the candidate with the advantage. He said functionally if you are a republican the way you are thinking about this is do you want the strong economy, the judges that mcconnell and trump are putting in or do you want to vote for Elizabeth Warren . My question is are you still a republican . I am republican, yeah, absolute absolutely. Just to be clear. Sometimes we have some back and forth. Do you think it is possible for democrats to nm nate somebody that disaffected never trump republicans show up for . Probably although i dont think that should be the focus. I really think trump changed the electorate in a big way in the Republican Party. I think you need the same dynamic on the democratic side. You need to have a new electorate. If you try to put together the same map from 2016 it is going to be hard to do. Each of the candidates has a totally different argument how they are going recreate a new coalition, a new map. Certainly buttegeig has done a good job of trying to appeal to republicans. Biden does as well. Klobuchar does as well. Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are in the progressive lane and not speaking to republicans. To that exact point jenna does this represent a clash of the elites versus blue collar voters . Is that when we are looking at here . Because there are some people i remember going to bernie rallies in 2016, the question wasnt between bernie and hilla hillary. It was if bernie is not the nominee, i am going to vote for trump. Thats one part of it. I spent a lot of time in counties that voted twice for obama and then voted once for donald trump. People just want someone who will be a voice for them. Sometimes thats Bernie Sanders. Sometimes thats donald trump. Sometimes thats Elizabeth Warren, depending on who you are talking to. But there is a feeling in these places that washington just doesnt understand what life is like. Sure, the economy is booming, but booming for who . Right. You know, they just feel like life isnt necessarily Getting Better there are some Trump Supporters who feel like the president hasnt delivered for them but they dont want to just vote for someone who is not trump. They want the believe in someone else. One question i have had as i have been covering impeachment is just how that is impacting here on the ground in terms of joe biden. Joni ernst, she is up for reelection, she had something that i found to be illuminating to say when she came down to the micro phones in the Senate Subway earlier this week. Watch. Iowa caucuses, folks, Iowa Caucuses are this next monday evening. I am really interested to see how this discussion today informs and influences the iowa caucus voters, those democratic caucusgoers, will they be supporting Vice President biden at this point . David, did she give up the game here in how the president say tacking joe biden . No, i think you had to watch the lead in to her krarks where senator barrasso was talking about the bidens and burisma. Taken on their own it sounds like she was saying the quiet thing out loud. It did. Lets face it a lot of the impeachment stuff revolved around a whole biden question, obviously. We will see. Hes using this to fund raise. Hes put it in his remarks over the last few days. I think both sides are kind of playing politics with this a little bit. It is no secret i think that republicans would love nothing more than for the impeachment trial to muddy up joe bidens campaign. President trump tweets publicly and talks publicly about Bernie Sanders in a way that it is clear he wants him not joe biden to be his opponent. But thats simply not happening. In conversations i have had with voters since wednesday throughout the state in iowa huntered bien came up one time from one voter at a Amy Klobuchar event what still said he would caucus for jobe if not Amy Klobuchar. Last week one of the candidates who was hoping to capitalize on the absence of all of the senators in the race was Pete Buttegeig here he is making media rounds this morning. It is about making sure we have the right approach the defeat donald trump. We dont have to choose between revolution and establishment. It is just not true that you would have to choose wean the status quo or a total revolution. There is another way, another way that i think will be the most effective for governing and for winning. Joining me now from down the street in des moines is msnbc road warrior Vaughn Hillyard who has been following the buttegeig campaign of late. What are you learning . Are they in a good position to capitalize on the events that kept a lot of their rivals in washington . Kasie, over the last three weeks, Pete Buttegeig has held nearly 50 events around the state of iowa. As jenna was talking about hes had the opportunity to go into a lot of these counties that went by overwhelming numbers for donald trump but had previously voted for obama. These are the types of voters who have shown willingness to be independent. Look at the 2016 caucus. 20 of the individuals who took part in the caucus identified themselves as independents. The reality is, tony in this caucus there is not much of a competitive gop caucus taking place so there is that opportunity for the influx of republicans and independents to come and take part in the democratic process. That to a large extent is what Pete Buttegeig is relying on. We are about ten minutes down the road from java joes. This is pete bunls final Campaign Rally before tomorrows caucus here. Over the course of especially this last week he has really hit that home, bringing on ins and republicans. The question is, to what extent to the independents and republicans want to take part a. Strong democrat says she is going to caucus for Pete Buttegeig. But her republican husband said he will vote for punl over donald trump but wont caucus tomorrow. I want you to hear from Pete Buttegeig just a moment ago down the road in coralview. They do also need to win among democrats. Thats why you have heard him suggest he is the individual in this race that is a fresh voice and the one that can stick to 020. This is him just a bit ago. I know this is groundhog day. But tomorrow is the day after. Lets agree that the less 2020 reminds of us 2016, the better. We are going to have a different kind of election. Kasie, over the last year you could suggest that joe biden, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders had the luxury of not having to necessarily introduce themselves to the state of iowa, being wellknown figures. Pete buttegeig, you could make the case it has benefitted him because he has been able to introduce himself as an individual from a town of 100,000, the old and industry midwest surrounded by agricultural economy. He has hit the pavement in the last year, gone across the state from the rural countries the metropolitan areas. Tomorrow, the question s was it good enough to pull off an iowa caucus victory. Indeed, so much on the line coming up tomorrow night. Vaughn hillyard thank you. Great to see you. Much more to come on kasie d. C. Including how Bernie Sanders is appealing to latino voters here in iowa. You are watching kasie dc from java joes on the road. Java joes on the road need with Liberty Mutual. Con Liberty Mutual solo pagas lo que necesitas. Only pay for what you need. Only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. We are here in des moines on the eve of the Iowa Caucuses. It is one of my Favorite Places in america. But there are some people this time around who are raising the question of whether iowa should still be the first state in this process. Here is jewel hand castro earlier this year on kasie dc. I actually believe that that we do need to change the order of the states because i dont believe that that we are the same country we were in 1972. Thats when iowa first held its caucus first. And by the time we had the next president ial election in 2024, it will be more than 50 years since 1972. Demographically, it is not reflective of the United States as a whole. Certainly not reflective of the Democratic Party. And i believe that other states should have their chance. Joining our panel now is editor at large at the 19th, erin haynes. Great to have you on board today. And congratulations on the new on the new venture. We are of course here in iowa. I dont think our fans here necessarily agree with mr. Castro, which is fine. This is a process that is, you know, left over from a time when they had to it literally took is long to get the choices of the delegates from these small caucus sites all the way up to picking the delegates for the Democratic National convention. Erin, there has been a conversation about whether or not the demographics of this state represent the Democratic Party and people who really wondered okay had you we put a state that perhaps more represents the state and the country to start the process. This is a process that is really so unique, really to it highlights the best of our democrat express and what civic participation really means in this country. The voters really are so up close to the candidates. But i do think that there is an aircra argument, a conversation to be had whether good afternoon our more diverse electorate whether we should be expanding that conversation. Look, as representative castro mentions this is a tradition be that around since 1972, i was friends who are younger than that. It is not as if it is a tradition that has been so long standing that we cant have this conversation given with we are this the changing diversity in our electorate. Lexi, you have a piece out, saying that latinos are going to be the Largest Group voting for the first time in american history. Looking at the demographic changes happening around the country around reflected in iowa, New Hampshire or illinois just next door. I think it is high time that the country has a conversation about the order in which the states are voting especially when there is so much emphasis placed on who emerges as the winner in iowa and how it dictates the rest of the primary process when millions of people have to vote after iowa. It doesnt mean there is anything wrong with being white or iowan. In the 2018 mid terms we had more women and more people of Color Running for office most leez democrats and also voting as voters for the first time. Y seen that. It is going to continue in 2020 and beyond. The demographics are going to change the composition of the country. I think after we have seen these changes happen, et cetera time to have a conversation about what it could look like. Latino voters make up about 6 of voters here in iowa. The Sanders Campaign has made a major push to get them out to caucus. Here is mbs alicia menendez. We are a small tight community. Reporter more than 50,000 latinos in the state are registered to vote. In 2016, fewer than,000 actually caucused. The Sanders Campaign sees that as an opportunity. They tell us they have spent 1 million to mobilize this community. The first ad campaign they ran in the state was in spanish. And they have organized events like this where voters come for the soccer and stay for the civic. This is iowas state director. Her task is twofield, convince voters to support sanders and convince them to caucus, period. A lot of folks dont understand how the caucus play into the nomination and into how we elect our next president. Belen is caucusing for bernie. She vinced hadar dad to support him, too. Also just one hurdle. I am not sure if he is actually going to caucus. Not knowing exactly whats going on and how it works is probably very difficult for somebody who doesnt speak english. Reporter this year to address the challenge for the first time there will be six spanish satellite caucus sites. Some say the number of latino caucusgoers could increase to 20,000 or more. But the Sanders Campaign says they will attribute any increase to last years caucus turn out as a success. Thanks to alicia men mends ends in for that. Jenna you have done reporting on this as well. The Bernie Campaign ahead of other democratic campaigns in organizing the latino voters here in iowa . It certainly seems that way. I spent time on south side of des moines and walked around and talked with people. People who dont show up to rallies, you know, but who are still politically engaged. The name we kept hearing again and again and again was Bernie Sanders, representatives of his campaign had personally reached out to them. And some of them were talking about caucusesing. It was always almost always for the first time. I think it is important to remember while iowa is a very white state there is diversity, there is a big and growing latino population here. This was an fortunate for candidates to reach out to those voters and hear from them and let that guide the work they are going to be doing in other states. While every campaign has a la n latinx campaign organizer, Bernie Sanders has 22 latinos on their staff. They are putting a lot of money into this. This wasnt trust translating what they already have into spanish. It was a whole strategy making latinos one of their top priorities. We havent seen it from other candidates. It is interesting to hear jenna say that. When i covered Bernie Sanders in 2016 it was one of his criticisms i think they took it to heart. The question is senator spds learn lessons from 2016 particularly on issues of race and going after latino voters, particularly since Vice President biden seems to have a stronghold with black voters in states like South Carolina and in the super tuesday states that come 72 hours after that. To the extent that senator sanders can make inroads with latino voters. 27 of them voted for President Trump in 2016. I think he sees an opportunity to take his message to them and put them in his coalition in a way he has not been able to do with black voters up to this point. Thank you guys so much for being here. When we return i am going to talk live to jeff weaver, Senior Adviser to Bernie Sanderss campaign as they bring out their biggest crowd so far of this cycle here in iowa. Healthier brain. Better life. We are in the final stretch before the iowa caucus. Here to talk about all things Bernie Sanders with me is jeff weaver, a Senior Adviser for sanderss 2020 campaign. I would say right at the heart the sanders brain trust. We spent a lot of time together four years ago. It is great to have you on the show. Obviously expectations are pretty high for Bernie Sanders. What have you been doing differently here in iowa this time around than what you did in 2016 . A couple things. First of all i think a lot of people reported we have had smaller events, more intimate events than the senator had last time. Last time we had a challenge in introducing him, getting his name id up. This year we had almost 100 name id. We had smaller events and he would talk to caucusgoers so they could tell their stories rather than just him telling his story. Secondly, worry trying to bring out the Latino Community to participate in in the caucuses. There is a lot of fear among the democratic establish so to speak or among elected democrats that Bernie Sanders is going to win the nomination then lose to donald trump because he cant appeal to voters in the middle, they will be afraid of his socialist label. How do you respond to those claims. Two thing. If you look at national polls, frankly, this has been the case for the last four years. In head to heads against trump bernie has beaten him in the battleground states. Look at the people who are saying they are afraid of Bernie Sanders. What is their motivation . They are not worried about down ballot democrats. They are party insiders, people who make money and have power and prestige based on their position and if Bernie Sanders becomes president they will become irrelevant and the people of iowa and others will be the voices that make noise in this country. They are afraid of being irrelevant. Mike bloom is in the race, not here in iowa but spending millions and millions of dollars on tv. He is ticking up on national polls. The line of thinking seems to be if joe biden collapses in the early states ahe is going the come in and take the nomination away. What is the strategy coming up against him . How do you see Something Like that ending . This is the Democratic Party. It should be kreld by rank and file voters. Bloomberg is trying to buy his way into the white house. He kipd iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, New Hampshire, states where you have to have contact with voters. What does that say about a person who doesnt want come to small venues and shake hands with people . I think thats a statement about their values and what they are trying to do. Bernie sanders has always stood by working people. He is a grassroots funded campaign. Mike bloomberg is a super rich and successful guy trying to buy his way into white house. I think thats a sharp contrast for voters. Are you prepared to take it all the way to the convention if thats what happens with Mike Bloomberg . We are going to support whatever the nominee is. Obviously if there is is a contest where there are multiple candidates who can be the nominee, including Bernie Sanders, we will obviously take it all the way to the en. What do you say to the hand wringing, you say they are afraid of Bernie Sanders. On the other hand, there are disaffected republicans, there are a lot of moderate voters, people that voted for obama twice, and then for trump. Do you think those people would actually go for Bernie Sanders. Well, the people if you look at pennsylvania for instance which is a Battle Ground state, the place where you saw people voting for obama twice and then trump are working class communities who didnt feel that the moderates in the Democratic Party were speaking to their interests. Those people who vote for Bernie Sanders over donald trump. The governor of michigan wanted Bernie Campaigning for her in their general election. People in wisconsin wanted Bernie Sanders campaigning with her in the middle of the season. Because he has general election credibility. At a rally on saturday night, talib encouraged the crowd to boo Hillary Clinton. Was that the right thing to do. She has apologized for it. I think i will let her apology stand. Does that concern you that people are so angry, relitigating the fight in 2016 and not able to move forward . There is under the radar sort of relitigation. I think it is on both sides. I think it is better the look forward and not backwards. Thats my experience smo what was your response when Hillary Clinton was saying about bernie, nobody like him . Again, i prefer the look forward. We have a big task ahead of us. We have to defeat donald trump. We have to transform this condition, put power back into the hands the working class people. We dont have time for petty inside type fighting frankly. Haunk for being here. Michael bloomberg is picking a fight with trump over golf. President trump tweeted a picture of himself playing golf today. You are watching a special iowa caucus edition of kasie dc from java joes here in des moines. Mo. Can it one up spaghetti night . Now he wants a box for the debates, to stand on. Okay. Its okay. There is nothing wrong. You can be short. Why should he get a box to stand on . Okay . He wants a box for the debates. Why should he be entitled to that . Really . Does that mean everyone else gets a box . I guess if it is interesting. Cory booker and all of these people couldnt get any of the things that bloomberg is getting now. I think it is unfair for democrats. But i would love to run against bloomberg. I would love it. [ applause ] wow. That was President Trump talking about Michael Bloomberg in his super bowl interview with sawn hannity. After a tweetstorm were the president last night with an array of attacks on michael bloorkberg, the campaign released a statement saying quote the president is lying, he is a pathological liar who lies about everything, his fake hair, his obesity and his spray on tan oh, my. Inside so much here, guys. Yeah. So jeremy peters, lets start with where the president left off. Clearly, bloomberg has gotten under his skin. Yeah, this is not hard to do, and bloomberg has figured it out i think better for most of the people running for president on the democratic side right now. It is a number of reasons. Not all of them of course are easily replicated by other candidates. He gets under trumps skin so much because michael plobloombe is what donald trump claims to be, this uber successful man who 3w4r89 his company from the group. This strategy didnt work last i am for marco rubio getting into the mud trading personal insults. Will it work in this case . There is a debate in the Democratic Party whether or not thats effective. I think in isolated spats like this, it comes and goes. It is easily forgotten. It wont be Michael Bloombergs campaign strategy. It cant be. Monica, you are covering the campaign day in and day out. How much are they focused on running fence bloomberg versus whats happening here in iowa. Today, super bowl sunday, who are the president ial candidates running giants ads in the super bowl . Michael bloomberg and donald trump. There is no mistaking that they are going back and forth because of the nun and resources they have. Certainly in the early states, we dont see bloomberg. The Trump Campaign is fanning out of a you will their surrogat surrogateser wondering, isnt it a foregone conclusion that donald trump will be winning on monday. The answer is yes. Because he is running as an incumbent they can do a trial run and flexing in the organizing game and saying heading into the general election we are going object formidable while the democrats figure out their stuff. But getting into the petty jabs with bloomberg. The president loves anything thats going to put them in the spotlight and not democrats ahead of mondays Iowa Caucuses. This is not the Super Bowl Ad thats going run later tonight but will be at a snippet of how bloomberg is trying to push trumps buttons. People have said when you were mayor, the city gave trump a contract to operate a golf course. Ye. Yes, thats true. But he was the only bidder and running a golf course is the only job that i would hire him for. Wow. And yesterday, bloomberg im sorry, the president tweeted a photo of himself golfing. I think we can put it up on the screen. There we go. Betting little exercise this morning. We just had Bernie Sanderss Campaign Manager on. Bloomberg in this race, when you listen to people who are supporting bloomberg already are talking about kind of because there are a lot of people afraid Bernie Sanders is going to win the nomination otherwise. Does bloomberg have a case here, with people like yourself, with republicans who doesnt necessarily want to vote for Elizabeth Warren but might consider bloomberg. In the general election there might be a case for here. I think iowa has moved off the maps a swing state. I dont know that any of the other democrats would come back and run a Strong Campaign here. I dont know how this works when you are basically absent for the first four contests. You has to have almost have a perfect storm with biden kind of collapsing in the first couple of states for him to have an argument to carry on in march. We will see how it works. In the general election, he might pull back a few moderate republicans who have kind of left the party. I dont think that iowa is going to be on the map. Fair enough. Jeremy i feel like the lesson we learned in 2016 was that big money didnt buy you much. Jeb burrs super pac dumped 100 million into the race sorry dave. We can ask you about that, too. But it doesnt seem to be making a difference with Mike Bloomberg with the democrats in the national polling. Why . I think one bloomberg is playing in places other democrats are not. So thats ads are incredibly valuable popping up his name recognition and helping him with unfavorability ratings. He has rather high unfavorability ratings. Thats going to be a big problem for him if he doesnt fix that. I think bloombergs appeal in a generate election in places lying away lets talk about michigan, wisconsin, and pennsylvania. Those three states. The detroit suburbs, the suburbs of milwaukee, bloomberg has an appeal to those voters who feel like the Republican Party no longer represents them and they cant vote for trump. But they are not there yet with a Bernie Sanders or a Elizabeth Warren or maybe even a buttegeig or a boyden. Lets look at what is up on the screen right now. Which candidates you recall smeg seeing on tv or social media. 60 of people have seen ads for Mike Bloomberg. Thats pretty stunning, monica, especially when you consider the rest of this field. I mean, this is a real test of how this system is built and what dave talking about. You used to be able to Rudy Giuliani tried a version of this strategy a few years back and it failed miserable. Can it be successful this time. Flooding the airways. Bloomberg seems to take a page out of the trump playbook. I need to play off the name recognize negative and get out in front of it. What else he does that the trump team does is this counterprogramming angle. Thats what monday night looks like in terms what have the Trump Campaign doing. If we look ahead to the schedule the Trump Campaign is going to be in New Hampshire the night before the primary there. Michael bloomberg is not playing at all in the first early states. Cant resist. They cant resist. They want to be the story each if they are not competing. I think thats an interesting parallel between the two of them. Many may enter, a few might cling to win when we come back. Nbcs ali vitali joins me now to look at who has been putting in the work and where they will potentially be able to win the state. Dare i ask, who, if anyone, has an edge right now on the ground ali . Casey n my conversations with sources over the last week, any take is a good take because things are really muddled here on the ground. I will say the only thing thats clear on the ground here is, its decision time. Many will enter, few will win. When caucus season rolls around we tend to hear a lot of the same words, ground game, realignment, and delegate mass. There are a lot of ways to win campaigns in iowa, just as many to lose. What are the dos and donts for winning the eye caucus . First, hit the pavement. Ground game is critical. Everywhere, especially in iowa. This to me is what iowa is all about. Reporter candidates generate buzz and enthusiasm. I will do my part but the rest of it is the face to face to face. Reporter but it is organizers who make sure caucusgoers show up and caucus. Hi, are you charlotte . Reporter take Elizabeth Warren, who has had organizers on the ground here since last march, some so deeply immeshed in these communities that one organizer even had a goat named after them. Bernie sanders nearly beat Hillary Clinton in 2016. They are hoping to do it again. Thank you. Reporter while you are here, dont take any place for granted. After annual, one candidate only can win polk county. It is getting out to iowa and talking to folks out there. Reporter iowa trends red but there are districts to be one this. Kings district, solidly red when the joe biden, Pete Buttegeig and tom steyer have been spending precious time there. This year, Amy Klobuchar is one of the few candidates who have hit all of iowas 99 counties. One lady said i guess i just needed someone to knock on my door. Reporter voters want to meet the candidates which means impeachment couldnt have come at a worse time for the senators. It is going to come down to personal appearances. Thats a problem. Thats a real problem for senators. Absolutely. Reporter then there are the swinging counties. 31 of them went from obama to trump in 2016. This campaign is calling out to progressives, yes, to moderates, for sure, but also a lot of folks i like to think of as future former republicans. Reporter the buttegeig Campaign Train caucused 1400 supporters across these countries because every delegate counts. One number everyone will Pay Attention to. Hit 15 . At caucus sites around the state candidates need at least 15 to be considered viable. If they are not, their supporters have to pick someone else or stay uncommitted. Even though that was my first choice they still listen, want to get educated. Reporter this year on caucus night we will see more data than ever before. We will see total numbers of voters before they realign, after they realign and which candidate wins the most delegates. That means a few campaigns could declare victory blurring the line between winning and spinning. One more quick tip. Rye not to yell at voters. Corporations are people, my friends. Where do you think it goes . Who pockets. I am happy to have a conversation with you but not yell. You are a damn liar. If you want to check what shape i am in lets do pushups. Basically in iowa. Dont be unkind. It is that simple. Just that kasie. Typically when you are thinking about as a campaign how best to win iowa the thing you dont have to exact factor is in impeachment. You know both know the senators in this race have been juggling impeachment, even after this weekend when Bernie Sanders, Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren have been able to soak up every second they can with voters out here, but most of them are going back tonight or tomorrow for a quick stop in dc and then back to iowa for caucus night. We are having a little bit of trouble hearing you because you are out doing your job. Elizabeth warren in the background there with here. David you and i were laughing at the sound byte torp ragss are people, my friends. That was from back in 2012. What are you watching for come monday. Second place race is really important. My guess is sanders is peaking at the right time and surging. It is going to send a message in New Hampshire who comes out in second place. If it is buttegeig i think he catch as rocket ship into manchester. Thank you so much. I am sorry, but we are out of time. I am dying to know what they are watching for here. Thank you for watching us. Kasie dc here in des moines. Buckle your seat belts for monday night. Msnbcs continuing coverage continues.
