Outrage of the day and the bad policy decisions were being made out of public view in washington or elsewhere. We are not talking about it because we talk about how the president agrees he agrees with a murderous dictator when it comes with a ridiculous thing to say about the former Vice President. With my interview with mayor pete later in the show. The lone republican member of Congress Calling for impeachment took his case to the voters of his town hall where he was welcomed with a standing ovation. These are republicans. We will get to that in a bit. We begin with President Trumps attack on joe biden and standards themselves during the fourday state visit with kim jong un and openly engaging in partisan politics while representing the country on foreign soil. In a tweet this saturday, President Trump wrote north korea fired off small weapons that disturbed my people and others. Not me. I have confidence that chairman kim will keep his promise and smiled when he called joe biden a low iq individual and worse. During a press conference, the president stood by kim over japanese Prime Minister abe and Trumps National security adviser john bolton on the question of whether north koreas short range missile test violated council resolutions. Does it give you pause at all to be appearing to side with a brutal dictator instead of with a fellow american, the former Vice President , joe biden. Kim jong un made a statement that joe biden is a low iq individual, he probably is based on his record. I think i agree with him on that. President trump later went on to call biden a disaster and wrapped up, slamming bidens work as a senator in the 1994 crime bill. This in turn earned a strong reaction from bidens campaign after President Trump returned from his trip today. The president s comments are beneath the dignity of the office to be on foreign soil on memorial day and decide with a murderous dictator over a former Vice President speaks for itself. At the expense of our institutions that. Includes the President Trumps embrace of Vladimir Putin last year in helsinki, siding with the russian president in the 2016 election meddling over u. S. Intelligence itself. Im joined by susan paige and Washington Bureau chief. Nicholas burns for under secretary of state and serving in an advisory role to the Biden Campaign. Columnist with the New York Times and kimberly atkins, news correspondent for wbur. Let me talk with you about this. Master burns, what do you make of this . Trump over there blasting biden . Making a fool of abe by saying he has nothing to fear from weapons that could have reached him from north korea. Whatever else. Backing kim jong un against the un Security Council. I cant remember any american president saying anything quite like this where you side with one of the worst human rights violators in the world. A tyrant with the former Vice President. Most americans, almost all american s would say its outrageous for the president to comport himself on this and any conversation. Secondly on the big issue of north Koreas Nuclear weapon, he said he was not disturbed by the small weapons. They are contravened by the Security Council resolutions that his own administration supported and those missiles are directed at japan and at the tens of thousands of troops in japan. He has given away a lot of leverage in a few tweets and thats a mark of a very weak and ineffective president. One quick psycho babble here. Why do you think this president thinks he can charm kim jong un, a man who kills relatives . He hasnt been able to do it. We have the oneyear mark of the singapore summit and the president was right to go to singapore to test whether he was serious. We know the answer. Kim is not serious about giving up his Nuclear Weapons and secretary pompeo sees that. John bolton sees it and the president appears to disregard their advice by continuing to think that somehow magically kim will transform himself and rid himself of Nuclear Weapons. Its not going to happen and we have given away a lot of leverage and cant get the chinese and russians back to impose sanctions on north korea. We are far worse off, i think today, than we were a year ago today. Thank you, mr. Secretary. Let me go to susan. The politics on this. This caused negative reaction for republicans. They think trump blasted biden in the midst of a visit. He called joe biden and veteran senator a low income individual. A historic slur. In the past, politicians have not talked about their president ial opponents in that way. He did it on foreign soil, o n aligning himself with a bloody dictator on memorial day. You put those things together and a fair number of americans will be offended. You have nod heard a big outcry from republicans over this. Mostly silence from republican members of congress from republican senators. And silence from john bolton, the National Security adviser who got thrown under the bus in the japan trip. Whats with the iq thing. You have a great sense of humor about this thing. I share it. Why would he pick out certain people with iq . It seems clinical. Whats the point . He thinks joe biden would be a strong ox ponent in crucial places like pennsylvania and he is testing what kind of criticism, what nickname is going to gain traction. He tried a couple things before he settled on crooked hillary. He is doing with joe biden. That underscores the point joe biden is trying to make. He already moved on to a general election against donald trump. In an odd way trumps actions are helping joe biden avoid a primary on the assumption that he is the strongest candidate. Lets move on to that. That will be an interesting consequence of what President Trump is doing. Let me go back to brett on this. I loved your column in the times, but it used to be elite liberals. I know a lot of them who love to put their noses up in the air and look down on republicans as not quite as intellectual as they are. This is a strange thing for a guy who runs as a populist to run on relative iq. Its unusual. I think the psychological term is projection. When you fear that you are yourself a low iq individual. You claim it of your enemy or opponent. I wanted to take exception with nick. I dont think he will disagree and said this is unprecedent ed its unprecedented in history. The idea that an american president may side with a psychotic or murderous dictator against an honorable opponent. Whatever else you say of joe biden and the fellow american is astonishing. The person im thinking of and the people i think of right now are the parents of Otto Warmbier murdered at the hands of kims regime and what a betrayal never mind of the United States and the tradition of bipartisanship, but of them personally to have suffered as grievously as they did at the hands of kim jong un who now held up as an moral exemptionular and authority on american politics by none other than the president of the United States. It is historic in the worst possible way. It is a stung repudiation of two centuries of American Foreign policy tradition. I cannot believe it is amazing that someone who identifies as a conservative that so many of my fellow conservatives are mum on the subject. Can you imagine for one second where Shawn Hannity and where the crowd at fox news would be if any democratic predecessor had uttered anything like this. They would be demanding impeachment on the spot. Here they are as silent and compliant as any group of idea logs and partisans have ever been. Well said. You have been using the word unprecedented and one they think is not is donald trump playing ball with a foreign power. A hostile power. In 2016, there is all kinds of evidence. Here he is with kim jong un playing ball with him against his political opponent here in the u. S. Thats right. While i agree with everyone, what donald trump is doing is unprecedented up until 2016. What he is doing exactly what he has been doing for two years. In that sense its not surprising at all that he would be drawn to awe thor tative dictators while he is abroad. It is not unusual for him to go against members of his own administration on policy. Sometimes even surprising them in that process. It is not unusual for him to punch at political enemies when he should have other things on his mind like north koreas missile program. This is what he has been doing since 2016. Since his inauguration speech was unprecedented, too. This is the new donald trump. He sees himself as the equivalent of america. If his enemy is the enemy of america. We see him do that with the press and with his enemies. In that sense, criticizing joe biden on foreign soil on memorial day, he doesnt see that as unpatriotic. He is an opponent and the most american thing in Donald Trumps world for him to do would be to attack him. Thats his view. He doesnt have the same ideological view. The one thing that is unprecedented is before at least in the beginning and certainly when he was a candidate, you would see republicans say thats not president ial. He shouldnt do that. Thats not right. There is silence because the Republican Party has largely folded behind donald trump. President trumps stance on the Missile Launch earlier this month directs counter also to his National Security adviser, john bolton. Hours before President Trump landed in japan, bolton told reporters in terms of violating Security Council resolutions, there is no doubt about that. The New York Times notes the president also under cut bolton, raising questions about the administrations policy and personnel in the middle confrontations with both longterm morning adversaries. I think we have to come up with a term for attacks on biden. Trump syndrome. He cant seem to get used to it. Mr. Secretary, let me ask you about the problem. I never liked the idea of putting john bolton there. That was a provocation to start with. It seems like they are nopt even in kilter. The president said we are not going for regime change in iran and he has guys with the chief security chief who since 1998 has been pushing for the change. How do you square the boss with the security chief . Its trump under cutting himself. You cant in the modern age have an Effective Administration when the president routinely, not just this time, but he under cuts the National Security adviser and the secretary of defense. The president did this with hr mcmaster and rex tillerson. What john bolton said in tokyo was correct. These missile his are a complete violation of everything the Trump Administration stands for. He was simply trying to support the president s policy. The president under cut bolton. He under cut himself with the leverage we need against kim jong un. You have to grade the president as failing in addressing the north korea issue nearly a year after singapore. What a bizarre trip abroad the president has taken to tokyo. Thank you so much, susan paige. Brett stevens and kimberly atkins. He explained why volume two of the Mueller Report explains him. He describes 10 potential instance of obstruction of justice. Im confident if you read volume two, you will be appalled at much of the conduct. And i was appalled by it. Thats why i stated what i state and came to the conclusion. I think we cant go we cant let conduct like that go unchecked. Congress has a duty to keep the president in we have a job to do. I think we owe it to the American People to represent them. Thats why i took the position i did and i would do it whether i was a democratic or republican president. It doesnt matter to me. The town hall that came late came hours after he wrote an extensive twitter thread accusing William Babb Barr of misleading the public to help the president s false narrative that the investigation was unjusti unjustified. He first call the behavior impeach believe earlier this month. The president called him a loser. Amash is a Founding Member of the House Freedom caucus to promote open, accountable and limited government, the constitution and the rule of law. He has been denounced by his party and is facing two republican primary challengers. According to the washington post, one has raised 60,000 in the eight days since the need to impeach. House Speaker John Boehner and former u. S. Attorney and partner brownstein. Let me start with michael. What do you think about the situation this guy found himself in and then the decision to hold a town meeting. Your thoughts for the whole thing. Justin amash has been a pain in the neck in washington for a long time because he is a principled nerdy guy willing to speak up when it would be easier to stay silent. What he is doing is consistent with the libertarian principals he stood for since he began running for office. He should be admired for doing it whether or not you agree with his conclusions. I grew up with the limited government concept of a conservative. Government has too much power corrupts. Thats a conservative idea. Thats what hes for. He believes in checks and balances and the executive branch of the United States government has grown too powerful and there is a reason that the legislative branch is article one and the executive is article two. He sees this as a small step towards correcting that imbalance and making sure that the legislature holds them accountable when necessary. They told participants that the president of the United States said as you said has to be held to a higher standard. We should expect the president to uphold the law. To have the highest standard. More than anyone else. More than anyone in our government, we need the president to be ethical and of high moral character and to do the right thing. The pattern you find in the Mueller Report is someone who does not meet that standard. Greg, it seems to me what im getting on the supporting since we went on the air, the town meeting had a number of voices. A standing o for his principals and saying they dont like at all what he is doing. Chris, i would say that most americans should applaud the representative for what he is doing for two reasons. He is acknowledging that he read the Mueller Report and he understands just how important the findings are, particularly the volume two findings and conclusions with respect to obstruction of justice. Second and more importantly, he is willing to say so odd loud. Many members of congress, even republican members of congress agree with everything justin amash is saying. They are afraid to say it out loud. To see a member stand up and articulately explain why he concluded what he concluded about the Mueller Report is remarkable. Do you think just objectively, do you think this president can defeat a member of congress . Depends on the district, of course. Its possible. I think increasingly though and the reaction from amashs constituents reflect this. Increasingly, people are figuring this out. The Mueller Report helps. Live testimony in a congressional hearing by bob mueller would help a lot more. That needs to happen. Increasingly, the president is losing his grip on members of his own party, even in congress, as the facts come out. Yeah, you might be right. To my earlier point, congressman amash received praise from democrats for a courageous stance, republicans tore into him. Lets watch that. You get to make the political grandstanding that raises your national profile. Thats call Political Capital and hoping to launch your star bigger and brighter than district three. You just talked about how you did better in district three than trump. Do you want to talk about the last election you got the least support you ever have because you havent supported the maga agenda. Its your right to support whatever you want, but you also know you have no future in this district because of that as a republican. That sounds like the maga hat talking. Thats what i hear in every poll i look at. About 90 , nine out of 10 republicans do not want a deviation from trumpism. The nbc wall street journal poll ties his record high. I think the perception of the Mueller Reports reception helped that. Thats why representative amashs actions are so rare and striking. He is doing something that decreases the chances that he will be an elected official in january of 2021. He mentioned two challengers and he will have a tough road. The president will target him and they will raise money for opponents and its striking that he is willing to stand up and publicly offer an opinion and defend it not only on national television, but in front of his constituents in a high school or Elementary School in grand rapids. Let me go back to greg. He stood up and made this declaration and its like martin luther. Here i stand. He was not reaching the republican maga hat wearing people. Who is listening to him . Who is he talking to . She listening to his inner conscious and doing what jim comey and others have told us is important to do. That is speak up. Not just shrug and conclude that thats just trump being trump. There is nothing we can do. Lets move on. He is calling out the facts as he sees them. Thats important. I will say, chris, one more thing. As a former republican elected official, there is nothing worse than deciding what to do and what to say based upon the next electi election. It is a miserable experience and existence for a politician. We need obviously more politicians to do and say the things that are right that are based upon standards and principals and what they think is factually correct and maybe politically unwise, but to say the right thing and do the right thing as opposed to being worried about the next election. Sounds right to me, of course im not running. Up next, i was fortunate enough to spend part of the day in south bend, indiana. Mayor Pete Buttigieg next minute night. We are back bringing you to the show from south bend, indiana. I sat down with democratic candidate Pete Buttigieg. Among the things we discussed was the ruling on abortion that allows a state law requiring the burial or cremation of remains and allowed the lower courts ejection restricting reasons for terminating pregnancy. We began with a discussion about the Foreign Policy especially weird behavior in tokyo. Lets watch. I was watching the president in tokyo. Taking shots at joe biden, the former Vice President. Tweeting or retweeting what the Government News agency attacked him and said he was a low iq and the president of the United States put that out. Yep. What do you make of it . We used to say politics stopped at the waters edge. Thats a good principal to go by. Especially when aligning yourself with a dictator. Its not like it was the first time and probably wont be the last. The real question on my mind was what was going on that they were distracting us from with the outrage of the day. What kind of bad policy decisions were being made oust public view in washington or elsewhere. We are not talking about it and how the president decided he agrees with a murderous dictator with a ridiculous thing to say about our former Vice President. Whether they are playing footsie and publicly playing footsie with to attack his potential opponent. The u. S. Today does not have a Foreign Policy and there is a pattern. One of the patterns is bat ad actors on the world stage. You see this with the russians getting a pass on what they did to us in the election and you see it in this decision to give the north korean regime and legitima legitimacy. It would be one thing with the elaborate well thought out strategy with give or take going on and it was threedimensional chess. There was no evidence of process at all. Kind of a personal high wire act by the president and thinking he can form relationships with dictators and be rewarded. Maybe in a sense he will be. America is not being rewarded by any of this. What did you think of him being so well received by the emperor and abe and dump all over them and saying the missile testing was no problem. Its unbelieve. Japan has a high hard for the office of the presidency and their relationship with the u. S. He really was pressing it. When he talked about something that is obviously a tremendous threat to eastern asia security, but also the threat that is this is not a laughing matter for anybody. Least of all for the japanese. He is talking about it like hes going to offer his own assessment over whether its a problem or not without evidently check organization caring what his own Intelligence Community or the u. S. Military or the National Security community or the Global Community had to say about it. His Foreign Policy record was not strong in vietnam. You were tough on him last week and i was there when you were walk about it with the washington post. How would you describe the way in which he used his phony physical impairment to get out of the war. I was not around for vietnam, but i know this president used his status as a very wealthy, very privileged person to create a fake account of having a disability so he didnt have to serve. I get a lot of people faced tough personality decisions about whether to get involved in the conflict. Some people were Conscientious Objectors which would not be easy just as going over would not be easy. What was easy for him was to pretend he was disabled. Its an insult to the flag and the country and people who serve whether in that generation or my generation of people who went over and anybody who has medical disabilities. That would prevent them from being an athlete to being in uniform. Was he a chicken hawk or draft dodger. We will find out. He pretends he was against the iraq war. Now he is saying he doesnt want conflict with iran and taking a number of steps to add up to an escalation and it raises the question not just for me of is he really averse to having a conflict, but is he in control. Do you think he didnt order the task force going over there. Who did . He may have. He didnt seem to be aware of it. Its hard to tell whats going on. Its the same as a few weeks ago and sanctions the next day took it back. Its hard to figure out who is in charge. Its hard to figure out if he believes the same thing from one day to the next. Twh while that is disastrous, its potentially catastrophic with matters of war and peace. The lives of everybody in uniform and this planet are at stake. Its these situations that you need an american president to know exactly what he is doing. Why would he play the chicken hawk if he wanted that . The president said he was against the war would pit against the architects of the iraq war and the greatest policy disaster in this country in my lifetime and put him in change of matters of war and peace. It makes me think he doesnt care. I think thats the real problem we have. Its a problem if you are in uniform with this guy at the top. Its a problem if you are a citizen of the Country Living with the decisions made. The president of the United States does not care. Lets talk about the indiana laws and thats two statutes. One they let lie at the appellate level and they are not going to question and review it, but they decided to go low. What do you in terms of burial after an abortion. Would you have been with the 72 . This is part of a bigger agenda. Its a systematic effort under way for longer than i have been alive to erode the foundation of roe vs. Wade and reproductive rights and to find any angle and any story or case law. How does requiring a burial after an abortion to be an infringement on roe. Or after a miscarriage . We are talking about putting women in a harder position than they are already in. More importantly, this is about the message that they want to send. The message is that we, the government, not you the family, get to decide this meta physical question of life. The government will decide and we will tell you what to do. We put you down with the two . Im not a constitutional scholar, but when it comes to protecting that right, you can put me down there. Thank you. Up next, President Trump attacks from tokyo. American politicians launched attacks from home and with trump as president , thats out the window. Japan rolled out the red carpet for President Trump during his fourday state visit. It wasnt enough to hold his attention. Halfway around the world the president was fixated with politics at home and in particular and while its a long standing position not to attack a rival while on foreign soil, especially on a state visit, this president is not necessarily one for following such traditions. I can tell you that joe biden was a disaster. His administration with president obama, they were basically a disaster when it came to so many things. Whether it was economy, whether it was military defense, no matter what it was, they had a lot of problems. Im not a fan. President trump also took a swipe at biden for his role in passing the 1994 crime bill. Sleepy joe biden was so heavily involved in passing the bill that was in a dark period in american history. Has sleepy joe apologized . While golfing with the japanese Prime Minister, he said it made him smile that the north korean dictator called biden a low iq individual. The president was responding to a report that the state media labeled him a fool of low iq following bidens criticism of the north korean leader. The president saying he was actually defending the Vice President with his tweet. Wait until you hear this explanation. Thats next. Hear this planation. Thats next. Hey, who are you . Calling him beneath the dignity of the office. The president responded to that with a new tweet saying i was sticking up for sleepy joe biden. Kim jong un called him a low iq idiot and other things and i related the quote as a much softer low iq individual. Who could be upset with that. Juanita tolliver, thank you very much. Michael, first. Trump is rubbing it in and sticking the knife in and turning it. It is a state visit paid for, every nickel by us and the japanese government and he is using that platform to take a cheap series of shots against a guy he doesnt even know will be his opponent. A lot of that has to do with no boundaries with this president. Whether he is in Great Britain which he will be shortly or in asia, wherever he happens to be, thats no different than being in kansas or being in new york. For him its all the same when it comes to laying down the kind of political trap he wants to lay down. The fact of the matter is the idea that we held as rather important whether you are democrat or republican you dont go after the president of the United States on foreign soil that we least upheld the dignity and the respect of the Office Despite political differences. That doesnt matter here. That doesnt carry the same level of concern nor weight for President Trump and sort of the mealy mouth response from a handful of republicans and Republican Leaders and elected officials reinforces that attitude with trump and his people. What do you make of this . I thought the trump strategy going into 2020 has been try to stay in the low 40s and hold on as high as 42 or 43. The o opponent has a bigger negative. Why is he doing it in may of 2019 . I think its twopronged. He is threatened by biden. We are seeing how he reacted to biden being endorsed by the Firefighters Union where his pettiness rose to a new high where he proceeded to tweet the names of individual firefighter who is endorsed him. The other side is this is another example of President Trump trying to distract from ineffectiveness by tweeting and changing the narrative to something he better enjoys. This playground of calling people names and engaging in politics in an inappropriate way while abroad. It seems that biden can benefit. Biden is arguing its a bottom between any dem who can beat trump. Isnt Trump Building him up as the guy he is afraid of, making the case for biden . Maybe indirectly. I dont think trump is looking at it that strategically. I think he sees in biden someone who can go after a significant addition to his base republican vote. Thats the White Working Class voters out of places like pennsylvania who you know coming from pennsylvania. Michigan and so forth. That vote is in play in the election cycle. He needs to lock it in and hold it down. Going after biden is his way to say that this is the difference between the two of us. Im the guy who will fight for you and stand with you. Biden is the guy who said in pennsylvania, biden is the guy who forgot about who you are and what your occurrence are. For trump it is telegraphing early on and the concern that may exist there inside this campaign about exactly what biden potentially means, full throated president ial election next year. Lets talk about the rest of the democrats running for president. They pointed out in the times with the 2020 field set now begins a series of primaries, little primaries among the candidates within the larger primary fight. Senators Kamala Harris and cory booker, both africanamerican are competing with mr. Biden for the support of black voters.
