Plus, new reporting on the confrontation that led the House Speaker to warn a reporter not to mess with her, and now she is hith back at the president who accused of her of having a nervous fit. And the former Vice President challenges a iowa voter to a pushup match and an iq test and did not hold back when the man brought up his son hunter. What the Biden Campaign is saying this morning. It was quite a 24 hours or so, everybody, good morning, it is friday. Yes it is friday, december 6th. Im yasmin vossoughian. Jeff bennet is in for amin this week. We begin with this historic step forward in the impeachment investigation as House Speaker nancy pelosi directs the committees conducting inquiry to bring formal charges against the president by drafting articles of impeachment. She made the announcement early yesterday morning and defended her decision in a series of events taking questions from the press at a Weekly News Conference and a town hall last night. Here are some key moments. The facts are uncontested. The president abused his power for his own perm political benefit. At the expense of our national security, by withholding military aid and crucial Oval Office Meeting in exchange for an announcement of an investigation into his political rival. Our democracy is what is at stake. The president leaves us no choice but to act. Because he is trying to corrupt once again the election for his own benefit. Let me just say this. This isnt, were saying ukraine, the ukraine was the vehicle of the president s action. Asking the president of another country to make an announcement that he was investigating the president s political opponent. And withholding military assistance that was voted by the congress of the United States. Unless and until he did sox the president did so. But this isnt about ukraine. This is about russia. Who benefitted by our withholding, withholding that military assistance . Russia. It is about russia. So sometimes people say, well, i dont know about ukraine, i dont know that much about ukraine, well, our adversary in this is russia. All roads lead to putin. Understand that. This is the first president who has committed all of these things, as the constitutional experts said yesterday, nobody ever even come close, not richard nixon, even came close, to his dishonoring his own oath of office. They him peached bill clinton for personal in discretion and misrepresenting about it. Impeached him. Some of the same people saying this doesnt rise to impeachment. Right there in impeachmenting bill clinton for being stupid in terms of Something Like that. Now, the house speak were not say findings from the Mueller Report will make it into the articles of impeachment. Meantime, the House Judiciary Committee says it will hold its next impeachment hearing on monday to discuss the evidence collected by the Intel Committee and the judiciary committee. Speaker pelosi did not announce a deadline for committees to write the articles of impeachment or when the full house would vote on it. One Democratic House member tells nbc news they were told to not make plans december 21 or december 22, and thats the weekend before christmas. So the president and the white house of course are respondsing, when asked, if shes worried that impeachment would, if he is worried that impeachment would sting his legacy. The president said no, not at all. The white house released a statement writing in part this, Speaker Pelosi did exactly what she always does, ignore the needs of the American People, and advance her selfish political desires. Democrats sham impeachment is a blatant, purely partisan attempt to overturn the results of the free and fair election. Hoo ser reaction from Republican Leaders on the hill. The speaker gave a speech on National Television to push forward her rush and partisan impeachment, not one word, not one word on the outstanding legislation the American People actually need it. Is all impeachment. All the time. This is the day the nation is weaker. Because they surely cannot put their animosity or their fear of losing an election in the future in front of them. All of the other things that the American People want. Joining us now is msnbc legal analyst Danny Cevallos and from washington, you have white house and washington reporter for politico, daniel litman. We know earlier this week the white House Counsel was huddling behind closed door, talking strategy and what are they planning to do . What kind of defense are they planning to mount when this entire process reaches the senate . So theres actually a deadline on friday, today, if they plan to participate at all in the house process. But in the senate, you might have President Trump actually testify under oath, which would be the biggest moment in his presidency, to say he did nothing wrong, and they would have a more managed process, more to their liking, because the senate is controlled by republicans. But there is a, they might be able to call some witnesses, theyre going to say that he was just conducting foreign policy, and that he had a right to demand that american money going to ukraine, which has a history of corruption, was not being misused. But i think the thing is that Mick Mulvaney admitted that there was a quid pro quo for political reasons. Yes. Danny cevallos, so hearing part of what Daniel Lippman was talking about with regards to what republicans are going to be hearing from the entire process and i imagine he took that from some of the legal experts we heard from in the testimony on wednesday which is this is a rushed process, thats from the republicans point of view, what would be, at this point, the president s best defense going into this impeachment process . Its actually very different from the republicans, and their position weve heard this week. If you look back to professor turley, the lone republican witness this week, his defense was twofold. It was number one, there is insufficient evidence. In other words, there is some evidence of bad conduct, but insufficient to rise to the level of impeachable offenses. Part two was process. The procedure here is flawed. And thats the kind of argument that sometimes you can have a guilty defendant, but if the procedure is flawed, the defendant goes free. The president s position is very different. He cannot use a not guilty defense. He has to use an im an innocent defense. And that too is twofold. Number one as to all of the other folks who arent near the president , dont know nothing about them, gordon sondland, i dont know those folks, i barely know you. But i have talked to him numerous times. I have talked to him numerous times but he has to sell i know nothing about them. And as to what he has admitted to, the four corners of the statement he has adopted, whether a transcript or a memo or whatever you want to call, it he will look to that, as to that, nothing to see here, i didnt do anything wrong, everything in there is authorized by my article two power, it doesnt matter that hunter biden is related to my political opponent, hunter biden is corrupt, thats his defense, and even if he is 1 tiny bit corrupt, then i was discharging my duties under article two to enforce the laws as the executive. It is a hard sell. The problem with the president s defense, everything we have seen so far does not support that defense. Go ahead. I will also say that the line that you hear constantly is that because there was no Public Statement from the ukrainian leader, announcing an investigation, and the money eventually got to ukraine, because they kind of gave it in through the whistleblower complaint, that it was, if there was a crime, it didnt actually happen, and so are we going to kind of criminalize, you know, thought crimes, things that actually havent taken place, and so thats something that im sure that they will be talking to as a republican defense. Daniel lippman, thank you. Stick around. Danny cevallos, thank you as always my friend. Former Vice President joe biden is defending himself after a voter questioned his overseas business dealings during a campaign state in iowa. We all know trump has been messing around in ukraine. You, on the other hand, sent your son over there to get a job and work for a gas company that he had no experience with in order to get access to the president just like he was. Youre selling access to the president just like he has. Thats a damn lie, man. No one has said my son has done anything wrong, and i did not in any occasion, and no one has ever said, it not once. I didnt say you were doing anything wrong. You said i set up my son to work in an oil company. Isnt that what you said . Get your words straight, jack. So after that, heated exchange, the 83yearold retired farmer who refused to name himself, said that senator Elizabeth Warren was his top choice in the democratic primary race. Biden weighed in on the confrontation when asked by nbc news if similar situations concern him leading up to 2020. Well, if you notice, it is the first one youve heard, it is a, look, it is what it is, i feel confident about this whole investigation that is going on of trump. This isnt going to be a campaign thats going, you know, be really in a general election, it is going to be meaner, and we all know where trump is going to come from, and the fact is, that youve heard me say it a bunch of times when youve been with me is im not going to let the focus be changed from what the problem is. I can only imagine the campaign trail is going to get much more contentious over the next year or so. Absolutely. Still ahead, everybody, nbc news has confirmed, Rudy Giuliani is in ukraine conducting interviews as part of his investigations into the bidens, and his bid to undercut the credibility of the impeachment investigation. Plus, why u. S. Officials are concerned russia may have known about President Trumps attempt to have ukraine investigate a political rival months before the effort was exposed by a whistleblower. The Washington Post post reports that the president s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani met with one of the ukrainian figures working to build a Corruption Case against hunter biden. According to the post, the ukraine lawyer says during their meeting in kyiv, he pressed giuliani in a need of setting up an investigation in corruption in ukraine and giuliani tweeted hours later, that quote, the conversation about corruption in ukraine was based on compelling evidence of criminal conduct by then vp biden in 2016, that has not been resolved, and until it is, will be a major obstacle to the u. S. Assisting ukraine with the anticorruption reforms. That tweet is based on zero evidence. Now, a source directly involved in giulianis trip to europe has confirmed to nbc news that giuliani is currently indeed conducting interviews as part of his investigation, what he calls his investigations, into the bidens and his bid to undercut the credibility of the impeachment investigation. Well, giuliani has so far declined to confirm the trip to nbc, the individual says giuliani conducted interviews yesterday and has scheduled more indeed for today. A list of names that includes the former ukrainian prosecutor general victor shole, Viktor Shokin two men at the heart of the investigation. And two officials telling the Washington Post that President Trump routinely spoke with giuliani and others using cell phones vulnerable to monitoring by foreign intelligence services. Phone records released by the house Intel Committee, this week, showing Extensive Communications between giuliani and others involved in the effort to pressure ukraine, and a blocked number that investigators suspects belongs to President Trump. And the paper raised the possibility that russia was able to learn about aspects of trumps attempt to get ukraine to investigate a political rival months before that effort was exposed by a whistleblower report and the impeachment inquiry. Now, according to the post, former white house chief of staff john kelly and intelligence officials made a concerted attempt back in 2017, to get trump to use secure white house lines. But when trump realized that this enabled kelly to compile daily logs of his calls and the identities of those that he was actually speaking, to trump became annoyed and reverted to using his own cell phone. Lets get a check on your weather now with nbc meteorologist bill karins. Good morning. We need a nice weekend. Two weekends before christmas. A lot of activities going on. Last weekend was a mess with the big huge storm. So we have another coast to coast storm, this one is a little bit different. It doesnt have a lot of cold air to work with. With a widespread snowstorm. So you can see how huge it is, though. It is a massive storm. Highest impact is going to be in california. As you go throughout the day today, and tomorrow, and then we will take the storm all the way to the east coast by monday, of next week. So here is the timing on this, for this evening, airport problems possible around san francisco, and thats where the heaviest rain will be, and the north bay especially, thats where some of the fires were about a month ago. So theyre worried about. So debris and the mud flows and things like that. So there is a Flash Flood Watch that has been issued. Then friday night, into saturday, i mean talk about a great start to the ski season, the northeast has a ton of snow and now all of the rockies, and this is the second big storm in the last two week, the sierra could see anywhere between 36 to 48 inches of snow, at the high elevations, so that is gold heading into the big, you know, ski holiday, from christmas all the way to new years. And on sunday, this storm breaks out into the plains, late sunday, snowstorm, from montana to the dakotas, and then the storm quickly moves to the east, expect a very rainy, warm monday. We will melt a lot of the snow in the northeast. And anyone with travel plans on monday in the northeast, significant delays but the rain and maybe some flooding issues, too, if we melt enough of that snow quickly. How much snow will we talk about . It looks like in areas from the mountains of colorado could get up to 18 inches of snow with. This the plains are really talking about three to six. Minneapolis could get some snow out of this. Same with wisconsin. And a little bit here, in areas of upstate new york and some lake effect stuff but overall, yasmin, we could deal with a warm rainy storm compared to all of the others and it looks like dc is just going to be wet, too. In the meantime yasmin just booked a flight to colorado to do some skiing. How did you know . I know you will. Thank you, bill. A group of lead Russia Military intelligence officer, some who planted the poisoning of the former russian spy Sergei Skripal has been seen operating out of villages in the french alps intelligence officials are confirming, and Officials Say european and american intelligence agencies have been tracking up to 15 members of the Russian Military intelligence agency, who lived in france for some time. Among them were the two agents accused of carrying out the attack on skripal, although russia denies any involvement in the poisoning. French officials told lamon they consider the alps to be the base for covert operations in europe. Meanwhile current and former officials telling nbc news the fbi is tracking as many as 200 russian operatives in the United States. They also note that some slip into the country unnoticed. Meantime, a republican senator has blocked a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide at the white houses request. North dakota senator kevin kramers objection is the third time a gop senator had blocked the bill since it overwhelmingly passed the house in late october. Senate ted cruz, the bills republican coauthor said that the Trump Administration had asked senators to quote raise objections but he considered that position a mistake. Cruz explained that the bill acknowledges the systemic slaughter of 1. 5 million armenians that are far too long, that had far too long been covered up, has been hidden, and u. S. Policy has not acknowledged. The two other republicans who have objected to the bill are senators david perdue of georgia and Lindsey Graham of south carolina. Now, graham launched his objection after meeting with turkish president erdogan in the oval office. So a pro publica investigation disputes the border patrols account of the death of a teen migrant who was in custody. Carlos, a 16yearold from guatemala, was reportedly seriously ill when immigration agents placed him in a cell, with another sick boy. According to pro publica, a Nurse Practitioner at the overcrowded facility determined that he had 103 degree fever and the flu, and warned that he must be taken to the e. R. If this condition worsens. But immigration officials reportedly failed to act, and their account of vasquezs death the next morning had numerous inconsistencies. Cell block video obtained by pro publica shows that immigration officials did not find vasquezs body as claimed, it was actually his cell mate who found his body, also a boy, a young boy, and nbc news has not verified the video, which pro publica said it had obtained from the local police force, which investigated his death. Independent medical experts telling pro publica that the decision to send the teenager to the cell as opposed to the hospital was a crucial mistake. Customs and Border Protection have yet to release the video and other records relate told vasquezs death citing an ongoing internal investigation. People might not realize that theyre protecting obama care was so important to you, you said that you quote would have been happy to go home if Hillary Clinton had won in 2016 and thus obama care would have been safe, so let me just ask you the next logical question, if a democrat wins in 2020, would you feel free to go home because obama care would be protected . Or not . Well, ill see. Im not on a timetable. Im on a mission. On a mission. That was House Speaker nancy pelosi at a town hall in washington last night, discussing her legacy and her decision to move forward with articles of impeachment against the president. Welcome back, everybody. Im yasmin vossoughian, alongside Geoff Bennett also on a mission. Take it away, geoff. Were also following new reaction to that contentious moment during the House Speakers News Conference when a member from the right wing Sinclair Broadcast Group asked pelosi this just as she was walking out. Take a look. You hate the president , madam speaker . Because representative i dont hate anybody. I dont hate, i was raised in a house where we dont hate anybody. Not anybody, in the world. So dont be accusing me of i did not accuse you. You did. I asked the question. You did. Represent kiv collins yesterday suggested that the democrats are nothing to do with it. I think the president is a coward, when it comes to helping kids who are afraid of gun violence. I think he is cruel when he doesnt deal with helping our dreamers of which were very proud. I think he is in denial about the climate crisis. However, thats about the election. This is about the election. Take it up in the election. This is about the constitution of the United States and the facts that lead to the president s violation of his oath of office. And as a catholic, i resent your using the word hate in a sentence that addresses me. I dont hate anyone. I was raised in a way that is full, a heart full of love, and always, pray for the president , and i still pray for the president. I pray for the president all the time. So dont mess with me when it comes to words like that. Dont mess with me, the House Speaker says. In response to that exchange, the president tweeted this. Nancy pelosi just had a nervous fit. She hates that we will soon have 182 great new judges and so much more. Stock market and employment records. She says she prays for the president. I dont believe her. Not even close. Well, the House Speaker addressed that remark last night, too. Take a look. The president is a master at projecting. When you call somebody else nervous, he is the nervous one. When he suspects that somebody is not praying, hes probably not praying. Lets talk 2020 endorsements here. Former secretary of state john kerry has endorsed former Vice President joe bidens 2020 president ial campaign. The former massachusetts senator and 2004 democratic president ial nominee praised biden in a Statement Released yesterday, writing in part this. I believe joe biden is the president our country desperately needs right now, reflecting on their 40year friendship, kerry added this. I have never seen the world more in need of someone who can put back together the world that has been smashed apart. The former secretary, won both the caucuses and primary during the 2004 president ial bid. Meanwhile the New York TimesEditorial Board has released a scathing oped saying that president ial candidate Pete Buttigieg needs to explain what he did at mckenzie, the Global Consulting firm, now infamous for taking on ethically dubious projects. The Editorial Board writes in part, buttigieg owes voters a more complete account of his time at the company. Voters seeking an alternative to trump should demand that candidates not only reject trumps positions, but also his behavior. Including his refusal to share information about his health and business dealings. The standard requires buttigieg to talk about his time at mckinney. Now the south bend mayor is under a nondisclosure agreement with the consults firm and cannot talk about the work there but the campaign has asked to be let out of the nda. He has worked with clients during his time with the firm but beyond that we have no comment on specific client work. Yesterday, nbc sat down with the south bend mayer to talk about specifically his work experience. Is there anybody you regret representing . No. Did you represent a Foreign Government . No. A farm suit company . I hope we can get this all out. And in the past for Offering Services to authoritarian governments like china, russia, and saud raib. Following the New York Times editorial, four Immigration Rights groups have called on buttigieg to give back mckinsy donations and senator Elizabeth Warren has called on buttigieg to release his client list while at mckinsy. The latest poll out of california with Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren neck and neck. Sanders sits in first place with 24 . The l. A. Times, uc berkeley survey. Warren comes in in a close second of 22 . Down seven points since september. We should point that within the four point margin of error, and joe biden saw a six point drop, now at 14 . Pete buttigieg gaining six points. Now in fourth place. And the poll was conducted before senator Kamala Harris dropped out of the race so she is included sitting in fifth place with seven points in her home state. We should note her name will not appear on californias primary ballot. Back with us now, white house and washington reporter for politico, Daniel Lippman, we want to go back to what geoff was speaking about, with regards to mayor petes involvement, past work, with mckinsey. How pick of a liability, if at all, do you think his work with mckinsey is on the campaign trail . Do you think voters actually care about it . I dont think that this is something that voters are going to put too much stock in. Because theyre going to look at the entire mayor pete biography, and this is only a few years of his life. And i think he is known much more for his work in south bend and some of the controversies hes had there. Mckinsey is something that is kind of liberal twitter and the Upper East Side talk much more about. But i think he does have some real questions to answer about his work for a company that is almost, has almost turned into the bane capital of today, and that really hurt mitt romney back then, because mckinsey offered some of the recommendations about increasing pay, for executives, and downsizing regular employees. And buttigiegs gens defense, as a low level consultant, it was not as if he could pick the clients for which he worked, im sure he was assigned to different clients, thats kind of how it works when youre a consultant. After endorsing biden, you have john kerry, he is going to be campaigning for the former Vice President in iowa and New Hampshire and you can make the argument that endorsements dont really matter much anymore, but just for the sake of conversation, do you think that this will give biden the boost, at least the short term boost that he might need in these early states . I think it is obviously good news that kerry endorsed him for president. But i dont think too many voters, just like with the mckinsey issue, that theyre thinking, well, john kerry endorsed joe biden, so any of my previous doubts about him, theyve been washed away. If he gives his golden endorsement, then im not going to even consider any other democratic candidate. With candidates like Michael Bloomberg and deval patrick, i think voters are giving a second look to many different candidates, people who are really in the race at least. I want to say, i think it is about the person that is endorsing one of these candidates. I think a former secretary of state john kerry endorsement, while a pretty big endorsement to say the least, i think if you were to get an endorsement from a former president , like barack obama, that could really set you and hes not going to endorse unless Bernie Sanders is way ahead in the polls. Right. Right. Daniel lippman good seeing you. Thanks for that. Thanks, guys. New fallout after the House Intelligence Committee report released on tuesday revealed that the panel had obtained phone records linking Rudy Giuliani, republican congressman devin nunes and former hill column. I john solomon and others and some republicans have been up in arms accusing the committee of going after the phone records of a sitting member of congress and their working journalists, the reporter, and Intel Committee spokesman Patrick Bowlen issued a response yesterday telling nbc news, quote, the committee did not subpoena call records for any member of congress or their staff, including Ranking Member nunes or for any journalist, including mr. Solomon. Any questions about the fact that members, congressional staff, or journalists appear in call records released by the committee should be directed at those individuals, who were in contact with individuals of investigative interest to the impeachment inquiry. Chairman adam schiff and the committee have still not said exactly how or when they obtained those phone records. Still ahead the white house says one thing, while the pentagon says another. After initially denying it, the pentagon acknowledged yesterday that more forces could be deployed to the middle east. A report in the wall street journal on wednesday had suggested that the Trump Administration was considering an additional 14,000 troops to counter irans influence in the region. After that report, the pentagons press secretary tweeted, to be clear, the report is wrong. The u. S. Is not considering sending 14,000 additional troops to the middle east. But yesterday, the pentagon had a somewhat different take, according to politico, the pentagons policy chief explained while the exact numbers are uncertain, more troops are being considered, quote, because of new intelligence about possible iranian attacks in the region. Now, yesterday, the president was asked about the possibility of more troops to the middle east, and heres what he had to say. Well announce whatever we do, well announce, an certainly there might be a threat, and if there is a threat, it will be met very strongly. But well be announcing whatever we may be doing. May or may not be doing. Now, to add to the uncertainty, the president tweeted late last night, the story today that we are sending 12,000 troops to saudi arabia is false, or to put it more accurately, fake news, he says. In september, iran was widely blamed for an attack on Saudi Oil Fields leading to the biggest jump in oil prices in almost three decades. Liberal mega donor george soros once again at the center of a Conspiracy Theory tied to the ongoing impeachment inquiry, this time, on an anticorruption nonprofit in ukraine which received much of the funding from the u. Lets take a turn now with a check of the weather with nbc meteorologist bill karins. Bill, you know you have barnacles sitting offset. All he cares about is the weekend weather. He complains. Yes. Come on, do it. See, hes upset about, the snow, like a foot of snow at his house and then it rains and gets muddy and he has to jump over the puddles. And then rains. I said jump. Take a train, not a plane. The whole thing. Poor guy. All right. I will get you a better driver next time. So lets talk about the snow coming across new york state this morning. This little clipper low, maybe one or two inches. Not a huge or deal driving concern. Rochester and buffalo. Eventually it will make its way into central portions of new england, too. Here is the snow forecast as we go throughout today. Again, the white is one inch. So a lot of people have a chance, like an inch, especially the grassy surfaces and a lot of the roads, it will melt and then maybe two or three possibly watertown and syracuse, up interstate 81, the worst of it. So we will get this big warmup in the east. And it has been very chilly. We had a record cold november and a welcome warmup in many cases and we will do a lot of snow melting. It is starting today along the gulf coast in the 70s and then as we begin to see the weekend progress, all of the warmth begins to spread northward, so for today, this is 57 degrees. Pretty nice. And cincinnati, it gets up to 50. Dc, 53 this afternoon. And then by the time we get to saturday, the warmth spreads to the Central Plains and omaha gets up to 50, not quite to minneapolis, i mean still better than normal but not exactly warm. And then the northeast, it looks like the warmest will be monday and tuesday. And the only problem is, it will be raining at the same time, so it will be a messy start to next week, and new york city should be up to almost near 60 degrees, with rain on both sides, and dc could get into the 60s and then there is a significant cold shot behind this, and that is what you would expect this time of the year anyways and we got all of that nice snow, in the northeast, and now were going to melt it all. Some of your opponents sfwlr yeah, but the partys not there. You know the numbers. You guys got it all wrong about what happened and what you said trump. Its not fake, its just bad judgment. We all thought that what happened was the party moved extremely to the left after hillary. Aoc was the new party. Shes a bright, wonderful person, but wheres the party . Come on, man. What do you think of that . Hes saying the partys not there. Theyre not ready for medicare for although you have Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders touting it as one of their campaign promises. Wheres the party . Come on, man. He likes the come on, man. So i sat down with the Vice President in storm lake, iowa, on his that malarky bus tour and well see that on hbo interview 6 30 p. M. Supported on hbo. And what we saw there was him defending his lane. Him making the argument that the press, other people in the party, the sort of activists thought that the base of the party was much further to the left than it was. And hes arguing for a biden space and weve seen some validity to that in the falling of elizabeths poll numbers. As joe and mika just walk on to the set. Theres a show going on here guys, just fyi. Sorry, mike. So we see him there saying, the press was wrong and i was very interested, very surprised by his anger at the media, his frustrations with the media. You sa me say you sound like trump because again and again we heard him frustrated by the coverage, the focuses, and hes saying that on substantive where the partys at, as he said there, you giet guys got it wro speaking about nancy pelosi impeachment announcement where she directed her Committee Chairman to move forward with the drafting of articles of impeachment, how do you see that . We see this as pelosi in charge. We saw this as Speaker Pelosi sending a message to her committee chair. Shes in charge of this. Content, the calendar, all of that is going to be driven by her. And we saw that bite of her with the press yesterday. We saw how commanding she was. This is someone who every day feels more in command.
