Today, lawmakers will hear from former u. S. Ambassador to the ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, and she told lawmakers last month she had been the target of a Smear Campaign by corrupt politicians as well as the president s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani and his associates. Yovanovitch suggested, by Gordon Sondland, she tweet praise of President Trump if she wanted to save her job. A closed door deposition has been scheduled for this afternoon, for david holmes, the staffer that ambassador bill taylor referenced in his testimony yesterday, as having overheard a phone call where President Trump reportedly asked ambassador sondland about the status of investigations in ukraine. A democratic official working on the impeachment probe told reporters that today, the house intelligencement will examine how trumps Pressure Campaign against ukraine began. That official said Marie Yovanovitch could be viewed as the quote First Casualty of the president s campaign telling reporters she was unceremoniously removed for trying to route out corruption in ukraine she was described as widely respected. Two u. S. Officials tell msnbc news, that the accompanying ambassador to the European Union during the july visit to ukraine and while it is not confirmed by nbc news, the Associated Press reports that she overheard a cell phone call between President Trump and sondland discussing a need for ukrainian officials to pursue quote investigations. Official tells nbc news that the originally scheduled deposition on october 25th was postponed due to the funeral of elijah cummings, has been in touch with the state department, regarding the request she received from congress to testify. Under heavy scrutiny amid the house impeachment inquiry, u. S. Ambassador for the European Union Gordon Sondland had no intention of resigning. According to a Statement Given to the Washington Post, the report says that sondland says that his client has the full confidence of secretary mick pompeo, but the state department declined to comment on that claim, adding to the diplomats isolation. Joining us now from washington, d. C. , political reporter for the hill, Julia Manchester, good to have you back us with, today is the second day of public testimony in the impeachment inquiry. What Key Information are we looking to hear from todays witnesses . What is it that the democrats who are putting this inquiry together want to learn from the former u. S. Ambassador to the ukraine Marie Yovanovitch . It was interesting, on wednesday, we did not expect much news initially to come out of those two hearings with george kent and William Taylor. However, we got more insight into President Trumps want to really investigate joe and hunter biden. So there definitely is more of an expectation that news could come out of this hearing. What were looking at is Marie Yovanovitch potentially being used by democrats to really put a face on the impeachment inquiry, and being viewed almost as someone who was the victim of a Pressure Campaign, from the white house, after she really raised alarm bells or said she was disturbed with how Rudy Giuliani was so connected to the ukraine issue, and how the president s personal attorney giuliani was so involved in foreign affairs, and you know, it was interesting, her career, her career at the state department ended because of this, and there is clearly some bad blood. We heard that President Trump has said, has gone after yovanovitch, kind of indirectly saying she is going through some things, and such, so it will be interesting to see how that republican line of questioning goes through. They follow the president s path line or do they take a step back and listen to what she has to say and react accordingly. Could testimony from a potential new witness put more pressure on the Trump Administration who have been resisting House Democrats deposition requests . We also have the closed door testimony obviously happening later today, of dave holmes, the person allegedly overhearing that phone call between sondland and the president in that restaurant in ukraine. I think it absolutely could put more pressure on the Trump Administration. Right now, they are really very much on the defense in all of this. Because it seems this constant drip, drip, drip of information. But however, we have seen that they havent really stopped their strategy of, you know, stone walling these depositions, and not allowing, and not having various, or blocking various white house officials from testifying. So i dont know if it changes anything for them in the long run, because we know this is part of President Trumps overall strategy. Remember, President Trump and republicans are making this seem like a partisan witch hunt, if you will. So they are going to continue to that way and they dont want to legitimize it in any other way. Police say the suspect turned 16 yesterday. Surveillance video showed the shooter pull a gun from his backpack at Saugus High School in santa clarita, shoot five people and turn the gun on himself. Police say the shooting lasted a total of 16 seconds. Now, the shooter is in critical condition. Two of his victims, a 16yearold girl and a 14yearold boy, died at a hospital. And democratic connecticut senator Richard Blumenthal was on the senate floor yesterday speaking about a push for universal background checks when an aide let him know of the news breaking of the California School shooting. Murphy was blocked by a republican senator and they have been pushing since the 2012 sandy hook elementary shooting in newtown connecticut. Federal prosecutors are investigating President Trumps personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani for possible Campaign Finance violations and failing to register as a Foreign Agent as part of an active investigation into his financial dealings. According to three u. S. Officials, and according to bloomberg, one official says the probe against giuliani could include possible charges on violating laws against prescribing foreign officials or conspiracy. Now while a second official noted that giulianis conduct also raises concerns of counterintelligence. The probe comes full circle for giuliani who is now under investigation by the u. S. Attorneys office in manhattan, which he once led. The office began to scrutinize giulianis behavior as prosecutors investigated two of his associates, lev parnas and igor fruman who have been charged with Campaign Finance fraud. As the impeachment inquiry unfolds, giuliani remains confident the president will remain loyal to him. In an exclusive phone interview with the guardian, giuliani was asked whether he was nervous that President Trump might quote throw im under a bus in the ongoing impeachment crisis. According to the guardian, giuliani with a slight laugh replied quote im not but i do have very, very good insurance, so if i did, all of my hospital bills will be paid. Wow. Rudy giulianis being investigated particularly for his activities overseas which we know have been tied to President Trump. And in fact, just taking the testimony of bill taylor and george kent earlier this week, they do a lot to tie Rudy Giuliani to activities that at least on their face appear to be foreign violations and appear to be Campaign Finance violations, because any time you have an american seeking something of value from a foreign government, to assist with a campaign, and that weve seen in just the last two years, it has been interpreted very broadly, you have a potential Campaign Finance violation. Let mow go back to that moment where giuliani has that socalled joke where he says he has insurance in case the president throws him under the bus, what is the significance of that . We were kind of laughing about it, but seriously speaking, when you have the personal lawyer of the president coming out saying he has insurance, implying that he has something on the president that will protect him from being thrown under the bus, i cant imagine that the president would like hearing his lawyer say that. What does that mean in nonlegal sense . I ned to hear the audio of Rudy Giuliani saying that. Because context is everything. It is one thing if he says i have insurance, imagine if he had said, i have insurance. Can we push that on Danny Cevallos. Insurance. If he say it that way then context and the way he says it means everything, but i have to go back to a core principle. If youre a lawyer, and youre not a professional comedian, jokes are always a risky proposition. Because dont go there. Unless youre going to deliver it perfectly. And Rudy Giuliani didnt deliver it perfectly if it was a joke because the obvious implication and Rudy Giuliani is a smart man, he knows that if you say i have insurance so my bills will be paid, that people are going to interpret that as i have some secret that i can reveal that will damage trump. Because it could literally destroy you in one tweet essentially. I want to circle back when we have you here, with the impeachment and we will be hearing from Marie Yovanovitch and we have some snip pets of her closed door deposition given a couple of weeks ago, and what you are expecting to hear today . Today we will hear a lot of the information that we already have about the former ambassador but she was at the core. She was at the center of a campaign, at least as she tells it, to oust her, from her position, and by all accounts, she did a very good job as ambassador, and really had the United States best interests at heart. So really core, well, not even viewed so much the substantial of what, substance she says today, but i think america will be evaluating her character and her integrity just as we did with george kent and bill taylor because it goes a long way toward credibility and if this ambassador was ousted and it appears for no good reason whatsoever, it will go further to support the idea that there was some Shadow Campaign that did not have the United States best interests at heart in ukraine. But how many, just for a breakdown, how many miles formally existed that have now been renovated or replaced and how many miles new where nothing existed . Right now, the 78 miles that have been built, have been built where there was an existing form of barrier. We just started breaking ground in rgv, where were building miles of new wall, whether wr there has been no structure there at all. That is now just starting, the construction of new wall. The bribe is to grant or withhold military assistance in return for a Public Statement of a fake investigation into the elections. At the same time, senator ted cruz is also suggesting it is a very real possibility that the senate will call hunter biden as a witness, and reveal the whistleblowers name. I will not allow to go forward with my vote unless the whistleblower goes forward, even though theyre offering hearsay, theyre the ones that started this and i want to know is there as connection between the whistleblower, and the cia, or biden or any other democrat that would cast suspicions over their motives. I want to get to the bottom of this. We are not going to let the president of the United States be tried based on an anonymous accusation and convicted in the senate based on a bunch of hearsay. Very quickly, you are going to bring in witnesses like hunter biden, revealing the whistleblowers name. Look, i think that is a very real possibility. The fact that the house doesnt seem interested in listening to any. President s defense, theyre simply presenting a onesided case, thats not how our Justice System works. But what impact could it have on the inquiry if in fact the senate goes ahead and calls on either to testify . The senate calls on either to testify, this proves to be a part of the Senate Republicans Defense Strategy of President Trump. We know that right now, there isnt too much of a coordinated effort at this point between Senate Republicans and the white house. And i think Senate Republicans feel that calling these two witnesses that are kind of counterwitnesses, if you will, in their minds, to testify, could somehow defend the president and change to a very different narrative. I spoke it a number of legal experts about this and calling the witness to testify and they essentially equated it to somewhat, there is a fire somewhere and someone calls 911, and obviously, someone comes up, the Fire Department comes and puts out the fire, but the person who called 911 isnt necessarily the cause of the fire. They just alerted to the issue. So it is not clear what new information they are going to get out of the whistleblower. But they appear to think that they can somehow get, you know, put a new perspective on this. President trump, julia, has continued his war of words against the house impeachment inquiry, especially at many of these Campaign Rallies which oftentimes seem like counterprogramming to the public testimony that we have begun to see on the hill. Is it working . I think its working definitely with his core base of supporters, and as i was watching the rally last night, and just listening to what President Trump was saying to his supporters there in louisiana, thats what they want to hear. They want it hear the president fighting back. And they want to hear him focusing on that. However, i dont know if it will necessarily help him in 2020 with swing or independent voters. It is interesting, bill clinton called in to cnn yesterday about the School Shooting in california and said that, President Trump could be focusing on issues like these School Shootings, or the economy, and health care, and maybe he is, but it doesnt appear that he publicly is, and bill clinton said but instead, he is very much focused on this issue of impeachment, and i think bill clinton, obviously he went through his own impeachment inquiry in the 90s and he was able to win reelection, i think in part because he was kept laser focused on the issues and only aressed the issue of impeachment, addressed the issue of impeachment when he had to. So you hear a lot about this investigation. The investigation throughout the country. And that democrats are very much bringing, digging a hole, this hole even deeper. However, that may be true, however, President Trump is not necessarily trying to focus on the issues, on Kitchen Table issues as well. He is constantly talking and tweeting about these things.
