Im Yasmin Vossoughian alongside nbc White House Correspondent jeff bennett. We start with President Trump on his way back to washington this morning. After spending the memorial day weekend in japan. There he met with u. S. Troops and also down played the recent missile test by north korea. Even praised that countrys leader for the move. During the course of his visit, trump suggested that he was not personally bothered by the short range missile test carried out by pyongyang earlier this month. In a tweet on saturday the president wrote this, north korea fired off some small weapons which disturbed some of my people and others but not me. I have confidence that chairman kim will keep his promise to me and also smiled when he called Swampman Joe Biden with an an instead of an en. The president made that claim despite those missiles pose a potential Security Threat to allies in the region including japan. During a press conference yesterday following hours of talks between the two leaders, japans Prime Minister, shinzo abe, standing next to trump disagreed with the president s assessment of the missile tests, saying it violated u. N. Security Council Resolutions. When asked about the tests, the president offered this assessment. My people think it could have been a violation, as you know. I view it differently. I view it as a man perhaps he wants to get attention and perhaps not. Who knows. It doesnt matter. All i know theres been no nuclear tests. No Ballistic Missiles going out. No long range missiles going out. And i think that some day well have a deal. Im not in a rush. Tremendous sanctions being put on the country of north korea. And, again, kim jongun understands the unbelievable economic potential that country has. While President Trump chose to defend north korea over its missile launches during his visit to japan, north korea decided to take a swipe at one member of his administration. In a statement delivered by the countrys state media a spokesperson for its foreign minute try yesterday called Trumps National security adviser john bolton a war monger, and a human defect. Those comments come after bolton on saturday culled the countrys recent missile tests a violation of u. N. Security Council Resolutions which as we just mentioned japan also claimed. Now bolton told reporters in tokyo that as a result of those launches sanctions against pyongyang must be kept in place. In the statement north korean spokesperson also said quote it will be fit to call bolton not a security adviser striving for security but a security destroying advice orwho is wrecking peace and security. It is not at all strange that perverse words always come out of the mouth of a structurally defective guy and such a human defect deserves an earlier banishing. Joining us now live from tokyo is chief White House Correspondent hallie jackson. For President Trump, this is another overseas trip overshadowed by controversies of his own making. When it comes to north korea it appears as if the president is trying to show that his big gambit with kim is a success as we head into this election year. What do you make of this . Reporter hes keeping the door open yet for more talks with kim jongun. Thats a fair assessment. When you look at how that trip by President Trump who by the way is now 30,000 feet above the pacific ocean, hes headed home as of a few hours ago. We were at an airbase south of tokyo where he met troops, signed hats, delivered these remarks to them and then headed out. Here in japan, the big headline on north korea is that President Trump backs a potential summit, not with himself but between Prime Minister shinzo abe and kim jongun. Thats now its being received locally here. The headline for japanese President Trump does support the idea of unconditional talks between abe and kim. Thats something that has not happened yet and something kim jongun has not been open to. Youre right theres a couple of controversies that overshadow this trip most notably the president saying he believes those missile tests simply dont matter pointing to his people it violates u. N. Security Council Resolution but not the president himself. The president has been preoccupied with former Vice President joe biden tweeting about him yet again on his way overseas. We know where the president s head is at as we gets ready to land in washington later on this afternoon. Democratic president ial cane and u. S. Senator Amy Klobuchar said at a Campaign Event this weekend that john mccain repeatedly compared President Trump to a dictator during his 2017 inauguration. Amy klobuchar said she sat next to mccain and senator Bernie Sanders during the inaugural address which became known for its blunt expression of trumps authoritarian populism and invocations of american carnage. Quote, i sat on that stage between bernie and john mccain. John mccain kept reciting to me names of dictators during that speech because he knew more than any of us that we were facing what we were facing as a nation Amy Klobuchar said. He understood it. He knew because he knew this man more than any of us did. Speaking tore the mccain family the senators daughter, Meghan Mccain asked Amy Klobuchar to be respectful to all of us and leave my fathers memory out of trumps politics. President trump drew attention to his own controversial history on race and policing. Tweeting sunday quote, anyone associated with the 1994 crime bill will not have a chance of being elected. In particular, africanamericans will not be able to vote for you. I on the other hand was responsible for criminal Justice Reform which had tremendous support and help fix the 94 bill. Superpredator was the Team Associated with the crime bill that joe biden was heavily involved in passing. Sleepy joe apologized . No. Despite that bill passing with support of now Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell and dan coats, the president s tweets ignore his own past. In 1989 donald trump took out this full page ad in the New York Daily News calling to bring back the Death Penalty for five young men wrongly accused of raping a jogger in central park. He also advocated tougher policing nationwide telling larry king in an interview at the time the ad very strong and vocal. Bring back law and order. Im not referring to just new york im referring to everything. Heres more. Im also in favre of Building Police forces that can do something instead of turning their back. Every quality lawyer first thing they start doing is chanting police brutality. The jailhouse confession later exonerated the central park five. The president has not apologized nor changed his mind. Writing in a 2014 daily news oped settling doesnt mean innocence. Speak to detectives on the case and listen to facts. These young men do not have the past of angels. Central park five were exonerated from that specific crime in central park. Joining us now from washington, Daniel Littman. Good morning. Thank you for joining us. As jeff just explained President Trump hitting joe biden for his support of the 1994 crime bill. Despite his own support for tougher sentencing as we saw. This is classic trump, it seems. What is the strategy behind it . Well hes trying to take joe biden down a peg, because he views him as a very tough candidate for 2020. His advisers as well because joe biden is popular in some of those rust belt states, those midwestern states that you see in the polls that joe biden is doing pretty well in. The ironic thing for trump is that criminal Justice Reform bill that he passed, while its good news for a lot of people who support criminal Justice Reform, it doesnt actually go far enough in their eyes, and this is a president that, remember, charlottesville did not make him very popular among people who are against racism and africanamericans when he was talking about the very fine people there. And so that is going to continue to dog him at least in the eyes of many people and voters because joe biden is very strident. Lets turn to north korea, what do you make of the tensions in the Trump Administration as views continue to differ on north korea . The president trying to give kim a pass, it seems. Yeah. Its striking to see the cleavages between trump and his own National Security adviser john boll on the who he seems to view as a war monger. Hes citing kim over his own security adviser and joe biden as well. So he views this as very important to keeping that personal relationship going so that maybe there can be a huge grand deal. But so far we havent seen that much evidence and theres enough progress on this. And Lindsey Graham one of trumps top allies said over the weekend on the sunday shows that this is something that trump, you know, he knows trump has to deliver on and so trump is trying to do the best he can to keep that relationship going. In fact, victor cha an expert on north korea and all things on north korea has said that testing of short range missiles is a direct violation of the u. N. Security Council Resolution, in written form. Theres no parsing of words here. It may be, might be, no interpretation on this. Its a direct violation of the u. N. Security Council Resolution. Daniel lit mapp thank you. Well talk to you again. The Trump Administration takes an unprecedented step to process illegal border crossers. As officials struggle to deal with the surging number of migrants crossing the border the Trump Administration is taking the unprecedented step of flying over a thousand migrants to other cities for processing every week. An official familiar with the plan told politico the administration has begun flying migrants to san diego and del rio, texas and then bussing them to Central California and laredo, texas where they are being processed and then often leased told to return for a Court Hearing at a later date. The plan was approved early in may and began working with i. C. E. To relocate migrants to other locations in the southwest United States for the foreseeable future. Its the first time in history that the u. S. Has transported immigrants to other localities because federal officials cannot process them in time at their original point of entry the official said. Joining us on set msnbc legal analyst danny cevallos. Good to see you. How could relocating these migrants impact the way they are being processed . Trump administration believes that it would help reduce some of the pressure on these pressure points where immigrants are coming in and they simply dont have enough humans or computers or facilities to process them. But heres the challenge with moving migrants to other cities. Its that the federal government under a principle called the anticomm anticommondeering cant force states to carry out federal policy. Thats why the the army sanctuary cities is a little misleading. Not necessarily the city is saying we think illegal immigration is great. As a criminal defense attorney if i have a client held in state custody their time expires every day the state holds them is a violation of their constitutional rights. But the federal government will give them a piece of paper can you hold on to that fellow until we get there and deport them. The states whenever they hold those folks are acquiring liability and possibly violating constitutional rights. Sanctuary cities isnt about city saying illegal immigration is fine its simply they cannot carry out federal immigration policy and in addition they cant hold folks longer than their state sentences than they are allowed to hold them in custody. Could the states that dont want to be on the hook for receiving migrants can push back . Florida lawmakers are doing what they can to be in a position not receive these migrants. Yes. Theres precedent that suggests this could be a violation where states are being forced to carry out or help the government, federal government carry out its immigration policy. Theres an old case where the federal government said or congress enacted a law that said to the states hey you have to regulate your Nuclear Waste and if you dont then you own that Nuclear Waste. The problem with that, essentially, the government of the telling the states, you have to regulate, carry out federal policy and that was unlawful. That was unconstitutional. This is sort of similar. I can see this being an analogy in a case argued if it makes it up to the Supreme Court that by saying to the states and the cities, hey because youre doing what we dont like in terms of immigration policy, you own these immigrants. Now obviously its a lot different than Nuclear Waste but analogies are everything when making an argument to the Supreme Court. Danny cevallos, thanks for your time this morning. Lets get a check on your weather now with nbc meteorologist bill karins. I hope everybody had a wonderful weekend. The weather didnt cooperate. Welcome back, everybody. Im Yasmin Vossoughian alongside nbc news White House Correspondent jeff bennett. While in japan, President Trump has continued his criticism of former Vice President joe biden. On saturday night he tweet this. North korea fired off some small weapons which disturbed some of my people and others. But not me. I have confidence that chairman kim will keep his promise to me and also smiled when he called Swampman Joe Biden a low iq individual and worse. Perhaps thats sending me a signal. The president initially spelled bidens name wrong bust corrected it in a follow up tweet. President trump was asked about his attacks on biden. Does it give you pause at all to be appearing to side with a brutal dictator instead of with a fellow american, the former Vice President joe biden . Well, kim jongun made a statement that joe biden is a low iq individual. He probably is, based on his record. I think i agree with him on that. I can tell you that joe biden was a disaster, his administration with president obama. They were basically a disaster when it came to so many things, whether it was economy, whether it was military defense, no matter what it was, they had a lot of problems. So im not a fan. Now when asked about the president s latest tweet invoking joe biden and north korea bidens president ial campaign pointed back to a Statement Issued last week reading in part, as Vice President biden. Said in philadelphia, donald trump embraces dictators and tyrants like putin and kim jongun while alienating our closest allies. President trump is facing criticism from both sides of the aisle for his attacks on joe biden. Peter king tweeted last night wrong for President Trump to criticize joe biden in japan and to cree with kim jongun. Politics stops at waters edge. Never right to side with mud rows dictators against a fellow american. And another one tweeted its memorial day weekend. This is wrong. South bend mayor and democratic president ial candidate Pete Buttigieg also weighed in yesterday. Take a look. Kim jongun is a murderous dictator and the Vice President biden served this country honorably. One more example of the way this president tries to draw attention to himself by saying things that shock the conscience to distract us from his deep unpopularity and deep unpopularity of the republican go governing agenda. Liz cheney lead to President Trumps defense, bending the definition of the word treason. Much this. You had two officials saying we must stop this president. We need an insurance policy against this president. That in my view when you have people in the highest echelons of the Law Enforcement of this nation saying things like that that sounds like a coup and could well be treason. President trump shared cheneys remarks, claiming that statements by agents investigating trump quote could well be treason. But according to nbcs pete williams, thats not what the term means. Article iii, section 3 of the constitution says this. Treason against United States shall consist only in leviing war against them or adhearing to their enemies giving them aid and comfort. Enemy means a country or entity thats declared war or is in a state of open war against the u. S. Aid and comfort must be something material not words of encouragement. Williams adds no one has been convicted of treason in the u. S. For nearly 70 years. The last few cases involved americans who aided germany and japan during world war ii. Joining us again is Daniel Littman coauthor of the politico playbook. Daniel, look, treason as Yasmin Vossoughian just mentioned doesnt mean being disloyal to the president. The do you think President Trumps bending of the word whether intentional or otherwise could cause trouble for him down the road . I think its causing trouble for him now. It looks like he hasnt read that part of u. S. Law and constitution that actually gives the full definition. And so last i checked i did not see james comey raise an army to go against the United States of america. So trump just looks like he is ignorant of what treason actually means and makes it lose its value as a word if hes casually throwing it out all around. President trump hit, as we well know at this point, continues to hit 2020 candidate joe biden this weekend wild praising a leader like kim jongun. Talk about the strategy here and how unprecedented it is for a president to be overseas and in an International News conference striking down a former Vice President of the United States . So, probably has not happened because if you look at president bush, president obama, president clinton, former president , the late president bush, none of them did such a thing where they would go abroad and praise an enemys criticism of their political opponent back home. So, were in really unchartered waters here. And i think most americans, even if they are not going to vote for joe biden, they appreciate his service. They dont think hes dumb. No one becomes a senator for decades and then Vice President if he has a low iq. And even if they support President Trump, most americans are not going to side with trump on this. Because there is not a huge fan base for kim jongun in the United States. This is a country that has Nuclear Weapons that threatened to use them against the u. S. And one thing to praise pvladimir putin where theres a strain on antirussia but theres not a base of support for kim jongun. Does this only elevate bidens stature in the run up to 2020 . Thats true. Hes the only candidate in the race so thats why trump is worried about him. Thank you for your time this morning. So President Trump also addressed a situation with iran during his press conference with Prime Minister abe. Watch this. I really believe that iran would like to make a deal. I think thats very smart of them. I think thats a possibility to happen also. Look what happened since i terminated the iron deal. Look what has happened to iron. Iran when i first came into office were a terror. Now they are pulling back because they have serious economic problems. We have massive sanctions and other things. The oil is essentially dried up. And im not looking to hurt iran at all. Im looking to have iran say no Nuclear Weapons, no Nuclear Weapons for iran. I think well make a deal. I think iran again, i think iran has tremendous economic potential. Were not looking for regime change. I just want to make that clear. Were looking for no Nuclear Weapons. If you look at the deal that biden and president obama signed, they would have access, free access to Nuclear Weapons where they wouldnt even be in violation in just a very short period of time. President trump is inaccurate on multiple front in his remarks right there. This mornings Irans Foreign Ministry says it sees no prospect in negotiations with america. Squashing trumps belief that tehran wants a new deal. That seems like a nonstarter. As the Associated Press notes President Trump is misrepresenting the requirements of the 2015 deal. The deal included the pledge by iran never to seek a Nuclear Weapon and one most of the agreements provisions tehrans Nuclear Capabilities were limited to a level where it could not produce a weapon for at least 15 years. Israel also took a step towards new election. Parliament passed a preliminary rehouse resolution to dissolve itself. Israel would be forced to hold unprecedented new elections. It comes less than two months after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was elected to a infuriate consecutive term. However hes struggled ahead of a deadline to form a majority government between his rightwing pear and traditional allies and farright groups. Netanyahu aligned himself while campaigning. President trump said this. Hoping things will work out with israels Coalition Formation and bb and i can continue to make the alliance a lot strong. But israels attorney general intends to indict Benjamin Netanyahu on a slew of charges. A Pretrial Hearing is set for october. Still ahead, everybody, mayor Pete Buttigieg looks to rally support just one month out from the first democratic debate. Mayor Pete Buttigiegs 2020 campaign is making a massive fundraising push through a new program. The campaign is encouraging members at Different Levels of the program to pledge to raise anywhere from 25,000 to 250,000 for Pete Buttigieg over the course of the primary campaign in exchange they will receive perks including briefings with the candidates and Senior Campaign staff. Supporters who join the program are asked to bring in half of their fundraising total by the end of june which is when campaigns have to disclose how much money they have raised since the beginning of april. Now Pete Buttigieg, who raised 7 million during the first three months of the year, is expected to be one of the top fundraisers for the second fundraising period. Less than a week after Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she was praying for President Trump, Franklin Graham and 250 other christian leaders are asking others to do the same with a special day of prayer for the president for his protection. The group is asking pastors, congregations, sunday schools and families across the nation to keep a special focus on praying for the president on june 2nd and hopes god will strengthen, embolden and direct the president against his political foes. Grahams call to prayer prompted 123,000 shares and nearly 40,000 comments on facebook since it was posted on sunday mainly from people who said they would or already were praying for the president. President trump is expressing optimism for a trade deal with china despite talks between countries remaining stalled. Speaking in japan yesterday the president said while his administration is not close to an agreement with beijing, he expects leaders there will be ready to end the standoff in the near future. Listen to this. I believe that we will have a very good deal with china sometime into future because i dont believe china can continue to pay these really hundreds of billions of dollars in tariffs. I dont believe they can do that. You know businesses are leaving china by the hundreds, by the thousands, going into areas that are nontariff including the United States, by the way. Over the weekend china pushed back at trumps claim that his tariffs are are hurting its economy. It is also previously disputed the president s claim that continues are leaving as a result of the u. S. s tariffs. For more on this and the overseas response to trumps trade comments lets go to cnbcs jumanna who joins us from london. The president expects the standoff to come to an end at some point soon. We had comments oversight from the Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry saying the u. S. Has not been consistent with their approach to these discussions. Ultimately they are looking towards a favorable solution as long as the talks take place within a friendly backdrop. Markets seem to like it. The chinese indices trading up, up. 6 overnight and u. S. Futures are looking to open higher as well. This on the heels of President Trumps conference with president abe in japan. There there was some optimism on the trade side of things. There the president promising the trade deal with japan by the end of the summer. The bigger question is whether or not china and the u. S. Will meet on the sidelines of the g20 summit. Certainly what investors are looking forward to as all eyes on the narrative between the two of them. Lets talk facebook and cryptocurrency here. Facebook reportedly meeting with trading firms, Bank Officials and Cryptocurrency Exchanges and the goal here really it seems is launching a Digital Payment system of its own by 2020. What more are you learning about this . Yeah, thats right. Facebook are dipping their finger in yet another pie, this time in the cryptocurrency pie. Facebook is in talk with 11 countries and the United States about forming their own cryptocurrency that would be called global coin, the expected launch date is 2020. Mark zuckerberg the ceo of facebook met with the bank of englands governor just a month ago and talked about some of the opportunities and risks that cryptocurrencys could present. This isnt the first Time Facebook has started venturing into the space. They are also in discussions with Western Union and Payment Services firms to talk about how they can streamline payments and make it more efficient for people to send and receive money from abroad. Talk to us about axios one big thing. Pulling back the curtain on healthcare prices. We expect President Trump as soon as this week to unveil a new executive order that will require Public Disclosure of different prices of healthcare procedures as a way to bring more disclosure and clarity to different kinds of prices. The hope of the Trump Administration is that when patients are able to see these things across hospitals, across doctors they will drive business more towards those that are cheaper, help encourage hospitals and doctors to be cheaper. Critics are telling us it could actually set a floor for prices not a ceiling when some hospitals and doctors see other people are charging less they then may raise their prices to match it. Its another key element on the Trump Administrations ongoing push to bring changes to the healthcare marketplace, a big political issue for 2020. How might the Trump Administration actually do this . Break down for us how they plan to further take on the Healthcare Industry and some of the moves they might make. This is a big part of what conservatives in the Trump Administration push for to bring more Market Forces to the healthcare process. A wig thing they have done is push for increased drug transparency, making sure people see up front what theyre being charged for drug prices, unpacking the discounts and deal making on it. More transparency so peek can see what theyre paying for. Regulatory steps that the Trump Administration is making not with congress because congress is not interested in helping on that, to bring that market transparency, a key reason to think about for this as we unpack the Midterm Election results, healthcare was a key issue for a lot of voters. Traths had the strongest issue from healthcare, republicans looking to match that in 2020. Axios is looking at altered video that was spread last week by some, including the president of house Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Talk about the challenges content like that may present for the 2020 election. That happen altered nancy pelosi video from last week when she was apparently slurring her words, a horrible view of our future dystopian on social media where nothing is true. The time it took to vet that video and demote it, facebook users, outside Fact Checkers took them over a day to verify whether the video was true or not. When that happened they didnt remove the video like youtube, they demoted it, they attached Fact Checking details with it. If you tried to share it you would get pointed to news stories showing how its not true. It does show the challenges that social media platforms have with the rise of deep fakes, a way to create fake video, fake audio. The line they have to tread between allowing that free speech and keeping the spread of false information from getting around. A challenge to be sure. Does facebook really care . Talk about how facebook has responded to the criticism from the pelosi video and what kind of action it is or frankly is not taking. Facebook is starting to care. Theyve seen the push back has been enough from congress, from regulators that they have to play a more active role. Facebook was far more transparent this time in detailing the steps they took, saying they used the third party Fact Checkers, they were going to change the way the algorithms rated the video and then the Additional Information they attached to it. I think facebook is figuring out they need to show what theyre doing on these issues. Nicholas johnston. Thank you for your time this morning. Thank you. We will be reading axios a. M.
