Good morning. Its monday october 15th. The Trump Administration is reportedly considering plans that could once again separate parents and children at the u. S. Border with mexico. Several Unnamed Administration officials tell the Washington Post that the white house is hoping to reverse soaring numbers of families attempting to enter the United States illegally. One option under consideration is for the government to detain asylum seeking Families Together for up to 20 days, then give parents a choice, either stay in family detention with their child for months or years, or allow children to be taken to a government shelter so other relatives or guardians can seek custody. Its just one of many options under consideration. According to that official, nothing is currently in the works that would trigger family administratio separations on the scale we saw this summer. Over the weekend President Trump said he was weighing several options to tighten Border Security and did not rule out bringing the family separation policy back. What about the forced separation of Migrant Children from their that was the same as the obama law. Obama had the same thing. It was on the books, but he didnt enforce it. You enforced it. You launched that zero tolerance policy to deter families from children coming. No. Then everybody decided and the courts dont want separation. And frankly when you dont do separation when you allow the parents to stay together, okay, when you allow that, then what happens is people are going to pour into our country. Really what we want to do is change the immigration laws because theyre a laughingstock all over the world. Can i ask this simple question, yes or no. Are you willing to reinstitute that policy . Yes or no . You cant say yes or no. What i can say is this, there are consequences from coming into a country, namely our country, illegally. I think its a very unfair investigation, because there was no collusion of any kind. But you wont pledge . Why should i pledge to you . I have no intention of doing it. The president s refusal to pledge to uphold the independence of that investigation, im curious about what that might say to you about his future plans for the justice department. He talked about Jeff Sessions as well. This has been a longstanding concern about people who are concerned about the justice departments integrity and the constant attacks that trump has made on Jeff Sessions and Rod Rosenstein even though hes tried to play nice with rod recently, theres a lot of expectations that hes going to clean house at doj after midterms. He doesnt want to do it before because it would cause more problems for republicans. At the end of the year i expect sessions and rosenstein to probably be gone. I dont think hes going to fire mueller. Hes been a little more quiet on the mueller front recently because mueller hasnt been announcing a lot of new investigations or indictments because of that blackout period before the midterms. Whats your read on what we heard from the president over the weekend on the issue of family separations . Do you think its something hes really considering once again . I dont think theyre going to do that before the midterms. This is something that Steven Miller is really driving at. He is basically the secretary of immigration. He has more power than dhs secretary kirstjen nielson, it appears. It didnt really work last time. The numbers of people who are coming across the border only declined slightly. It would just cause another outcry this time and trump would have to probably go back because there would be such a negative reaction. So it doesnt seem like miller has changed and trump basically lets him do what he wants in this. Theres growing International Pressure over the disappearance and alleged killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi and saudi arabia says it would not back down to threats, saying it would retaliate to any possible sanctions by flexing its economic power. I know that several European Countries have weighed in on this. Theyre pressuring saudi arabia for answers. Thats exactly right. International pressure is mounting. Khashoggi hasnt been seen since october 2nd when he walked into a saudi consulate in turkey. As far as we know, he never came out. The u. K. , germany and france put out a joint statement calling on the saudis to give a detailed account of khashoggis disappearance. Private industry is reacting as well. More and more executives are pulling out of a high profile saudi conference scheduled for later this month. Jp morgan, chase and ford have said their executives will not attend. The question now is whether the u. S. Will take more direct action. Now, one option would be cancelling the sale of weapons to the saudis. President trump seemed to rule that out in a 60 minutes interview, saying there are other ways of punishing them if they are responsible. That arms deal is worth 110 billion. Saudi arabia has rejected any threats of economic or political pressure. This is a country with vast oil reserves and there are concerns here that riyadh could use that oil as a weapon. So why is trump buddying up to him, especially when its unlikely that hes going to do anything to reduce his nuclear weapons, so trump is likely to be disappointed. The only real bright spot this morning has been oil, oil prices and oil stocks have moved higher on the back of increased diplomatic tensions. Up pressure really doubling down on this incoming pressure theyre feeling from the west around the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi. In terms of the oil price and what this might mean for u. S. Markets, its coming at an interesting time ahead of u. S. Elections. So President Trump faces a bit of a conundrum heading into the november 6th elections, Higher Oil Prices mean higher prices at the pump. Julianna, retail icon sears, the innovator of its time, the store that pioneered selling everything to everyone filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy overnight. What does this mean for the brand . Is it the end of the line for sears . So this has been pretty well flagged by the market. We knew that sears was facing an upcoming Debt Repayment later today, so filing chapter 11 doesnt come as a massive shock. In terms of what it means moving forward, they do plan to close 142 stores by yearend and begin the liquidation process imminently. Now, the ceo of sears, Hedge Fund Manager edward lampert, he will be stepping down but he has says that he hopes that sears can emerge from the bankruptcy in a stronger position. There will be hopes certainly floating around the market that this isnt the end for sears, but at this point it is too soon to tell. Julianna, live from london, thanks so much. What is the one big thing this morning . Good morning. Happy monday. The axios one big thing is 2020 hopefuls jumping the gun. So we had thought that democrats who were going to be running for office to try to unseat President Trump would wait until after the midterms, its sort of the accepted practice, november 7th was going to be the starting gun for 2020, but as weve seen here on the msnbc air, these candidates are out again and again in South Carolina, iowa, New Hampshire, nevada, they are all there under the cover of campaigning for people that have races this year, but what we hear when we talk to the campaigns is that more and more of it is being done to build their own name id and trying to break into that tier one, tier two when we really turn to 2020 in ernest on november 7th. I know alec baldwin was speaking in the granite state. Who has been dotting the landscape in South Carolina and iowa and New Hampshire and the like . This weekend we saw mayor bloomberg in New Hampshire, brandnew democrat headed down to South Carolina, just about everyone has been in South Carolina. Were told that the person who really sort of broke the dam was senator cory booker of new jersey when he went to iowa and had a great trip there. The other candidates who had kind of been hanging back said, wait a minute, we need to go in all in, too. That there isnt this sort of resistance to this we might have thought. What democrats explained to me is that enough democrats are excited about 2020, the idea of taking on trump is something that definitely is already on peoples minds. So these candidates might not pay the price that they would in the past and the past donors, some early state voters would have said dont take your eye off the midterm ball. This time with this huge field that we are about to have, everybody trying to distinguish themselves, theyre figuring go ahead and get a jump. One other big 2020 story popping today, front page of the boston globe, senator Elizabeth Warren of massachusetts releasing a dna test showing that she does have some native american blood in her, at least one 512th of her is native american. Could be more than that, but what her team says is that this confirms the claims that she has made and that President Trump mocks at just about every one of his rallies, the globe said senator warren wants to get a lot of attention to it. The fact that she got this test and is releasing it shows the president s criticisms are getting to her and she definitely has 2020 plans. Mike, let me ask you a bit about that 60 minutes interview, weve been picking it apart over the course of the argument. I want to ask you about the tone the president exhibited when he talked about his secretary of defense, james mattis. We can talk about the substance of what he had to say, particularly when it came to nato in just a minute here. What does it tell you about the relationship between the two of them . Its very clear the president has soured on defense secretary james mattis. This is a big deal. As i talk to republicans and democrats yesterday, they said this would be one of the most worrisome, most concerning departures there could be from the president s cabinet. As we heard a little bit in an earlier conversation here on the show, people both inside and outside see general mattis as someone who is assuring, competent and gives good advice, we call it the committee to save america, this unofficial alliance of officials, including the white house chief of staff, general kelly, who think its their patriotic duty to protect the president and the country from bad decisions. So when allies around the world love the idea that general mattis is there, but President Trump both saying that he seems like a democrat and also saying that he knows more about nato than his pentagon leader, that cant end well and republicans tell us it needs to end well if the president is going to confirm someone else.
