Primary. We have that and much more. I am yasmine vossoughian. We begin with the news that has the world reacting. President trump fulfilled one of his signature promises ending the United States involvement in the iran nuclear deal. We cant under the dekag agreement. The iran deal is defective at its core. If we do nothing, we know exactly what will happen. Therefore i am announcing today that the United States will withdraw from the iran nuclear deal. I will sign new sanctions on the iranian regime, instituting the highest level of economic sanction. Any nation that helps iran in its quest for Nuclear Weapons could also be strongly sanctioned by the United States. The obama team has responded to trumps decision in a lengthy statement. President obama lays out several facts about the nuclear deal, some of which go straight after several of President Trumps arguments as a sort of fact check, while adding the reality is clear that jcpoa is working. That is a view shared by our european allies, independent experts and the current u. S. Secretary of defense. It is an americas interest, it has significantly rolled back Irans Nuclear program and what diplomacy can accomplish. Thats why todays announcement is so misguided, walking away from the jcpoa turns our backs on americas closest allies. In a democracy, there will always be changes in policies and priorities from one administration to the next. The consistent flouting of agreements that our country is party to risks eroding americas credibility. Watch this. What the president has done by withdrawing unilaterally is place the United States in breach of this agreement. He has literally taken a situation where there was no crisis and created crisis. It creates confrontation. It isolates the United States. If the United States has to go to war against iran in next weeks or months, god forbid, but if we have to, do you think europe is with us . The secretary of state one of the major architects of the deal from the get go. Joining me, correspondent cal perry, and bureau chief. Ali, i am going to start with you. Talk about the reaction that were hearing from leaders in iran along with the people in tehran. Well, theres harsh reaction coming out. Rouhani was trying to strike a conciliatory note that it is salvageable with the europeans. A different message from hard lionel em line iran. He said when trump is long gone and dead and snakes and ants feed on his corpse, Islamic Republic will be standing strong. Irans army chief says biggest damage caused from the uk deal came from sitting around the negotiating table with the United States and head of revolutionary guard celebrates end of the deal and accused europe not being independent and too dependent on america to make their decisions for them which makes the future of the deal very clear. The most stinging rebuke from parliament, iranian, burnt a u. S. Flag, a copy of jcpoa and cheered the deal. As many know there are so many factions in iran. Cal, going to you on this one. We have had all european allies who were in support of staying inside the deal. Trump seeking to remove the United States from the deal. How are people reacting . Headlines and quotes from officials across europe is whether or not the u. S. Wants the deal. Theyre going to push forward for the deal. You look at the numbers and business end of this, its crazy. European union irans Third Largest trading partner. Germany. Half cars made in iran are done by french manufacturers. Those are hard business numbers. Talk about soft power issue for a quick second. After the deal went through you had things Like British Airways starting direct flights to tehran. Thats something europe is interested in. It is important to say the perceived threat of iran that exists in the u. S. Does not exist here in europe. The question is now that theyre renegotiating the deal, will they be negotiating with moderates or hard liners. Cal, have you heard anything with regards to reaction from the u. S. Ambassador to germany, newly appointed ambassador to germany basically tweeting out yesterday that German Companies need to dial back businesses in tehran considering the sanctions from the u. S. This is the stunning business headline in europe. The u. S. Ambassador to germany saying German Companies need to wind down business with iran. What is the u. S. Going to do if that doesnt happen . Is that going to start a trade war . Thats something that people in europe maybe want germany to call. You look at the president there, it seems unpredictable. Lets go with the moderate line that we are hearing from inside iran, rouhani saying were staying inside this nuclear deal so long as it benefits us. The problem i see here is if and when, any moment now, trump already has, imposes new sanctions, thats going to close iran off to everybody, all the european no one will be able to trade with iran going forward. The only countries that are going to be trade partners are china and russia. How could this be beneficial to iran . Thats exactly right. Moderates changed position. Couple weeks ago were saying if the United States is out, were all out. Now i think the economic reality facing them, theyre trying to make a separate deal with the europeans. Thats not practical. If the United States does the sanctions, doesnt matter what merkel says. It matters what they do. If they pull out because theyre afraid theyll no longer be able to do business with the United States, much bigger market and customers, then it is mute what the Political Leadership in the countries say. The iranian economy is good, even before trumps announcement. Iranian leadership has to face it. Ru russians and chinese with more room to wiggle. They want to do business in the United States. Game war. Theres basic the United States imposes sanctions, then iranian Banking System cannot integrate itself with the international Banking System, even if youre a Chinese Company wanting to do business, how do you get money out of iran if the bank system is outside the global market. There are a lot of practical ways the United States can make it really hurt for any company anywhere in the world to do business with them. Were going to have much more in the next half hour. Claims of pay to play with the president s personal attorney as lawyers for porn star Stormy Daniels alleges the company set up by Michael Cohen to buy her silence took in 4. 4 million through january of 2018. Nbc news reviewed financial documents that appear to support the account of the transactions from Michael Avenatti, including 500,000 from a company, Columbus Nova that he says is controlled by a russian oligarch, Viktor Vekselberg, and his cousin, an american citizen. New york times reported muellers investigators stopped him at an airport earlier this year, searched his Electronic Devices and questioned him. Attorney for Columbus Nova said it is a Management Company solely owned and controlled by americans. After the inauguration, the firm hired Michael Cohen as a Business Consultant regarding potential sources of capital, potential investments in real estate and other ventures. Reports say that Viktor Vekselberg used Columbus Nova as conduit for payments to Michael Cohen are false. They claim Viktor Vekselberg that payments were not true. 200,000 from Communications Giant at t spread over four payments from october 2017 to january of 2018. In a statement, at t said this. Essential consulting was one of several firms we engajds in early 2017 to provide insights into understanding the new administration. They did no legal or lobbying work for us and the contract ended in december of 2017. Over similar time period there was about 400,000 in payments from novartis. A spokesperson said any agreement with essential consultants before the current ceo taking office have expired. Michael avenatti said payments to cohens Company Raises serious questions. I dont believe Michael Cohen is registered as a lobbyist as he should be to represent any foreign agents or foreign interests. The big question is this. All this money comes into this account, we have reason to believe it didnt all go to Michael Cohen. Michael cohen needs to disclose where the balance of the money went, and if it went to donald trump or the Trump Organization and if he was part of a scheme to sell access to the president of the United States, that would be a shocking development, but i dont think thats out of the realm of possibility at this point. Voters in four states, including West Virginia, indiana, ohio made primary picks yesterday with 41 of the vote. Former state lawmaker mike brom beat out his opponents. In ohios governor republican primary, attorney general mike dewine will battle the former head of the Consumer Protection bureau in the general. He won the democratic primary with 62 of the vote, and West Virginia, Patrick Morrissey is projected winner. Beat out jenkins. And former coal executive Don Blankenship came in third. Is there anything you would have done differently . No. Theres nothing i could have done differently, when you try to unseat the establishment, its difficult. Would you consider running again . I doubt it. I mean, when i decided to do it this time, wanted to give the state chance to elect somebody to make a difference, rather than continue to be the way it has been. Joining me, politics reporter for roll call, simone, thank you for joining me. Very much appreciate it. I know you just got back from West Virginia where you were covering the blankenship race specifically. It was a very tense day for republicans in that state to say the least, and Don Blankenship didnt win obviously, but what were some of the biggest take waist for republicans in that take aways. National republicans dodged a huge bullet here. There were fears if blankenship were the republican nominee, it would take the race off the table. Remember, democratic senator joe manchin is a top target for republicans, theyre on offense this year in the senate map. A state donald trump won by 42 points. In this republican primary as well as indiana, you saw a lot of republicans running for trump. Who could be trumps best friend. In this race, lot of meddling from both sides. National republicans spent money against blankenship, saw a resurgence after the fox news debate. But democrats spent heavily against jenkins. You could say they had a minor victory and not facing the congressman they thought would be the strongest opponent against manchin. In the run up, theres question to what President Trumps role is going forward, how involved in certain races and endorsing and does his brand help or hurt various opponents obviously in the gop. President trump decided to weigh into the West Virginia primary to help. Do you think it was success going against blankenship, that theyll have him weighing in more . I think you are. The president loves to win. He was upset efforts to weigh in in alabama and the special election in pennsylvania didnt go so well. Youve seen he tried to cooperate more with Party Operatives at the national level. He encouraged a candidate in nevada not to challenge dean heller at the senate level, and instead run for house. Youve seen him attack john tester, senator from montana. Thank you, simone. Lets check the weather with nbc meteorologist bill karins. No matter what the weather is, happy it is warm. Yeah. The weather is perfect on the east coast. Wont stay that way through the weekend. More on that later. First, track bad weather. Wisconsin got a soaking this morning. Start with the mornings top stories. President trump fulfilled one of his Signature Campaign promises by announcing he is ending the u. S. Involvement in the iran nuclear deal. Watch this. In theory, the socalled iran deal was supposed to protect the United States and our allies from the lunacy of an Iranian Nuclear bomb, a weapon that will only endanger the survival of the iranian regime. The great embarrassment to me as a citizen and to all citizens of the United States. At the heart of the iran deal was a giant fiction that a murderous regime desired only a Peaceful Nuclear energy program. The fact is this was a horrible, one sided deal that should have never, ever been made. It didnt bring calm, it didnt bring peace, and it never will. If i allowed this deal to stand, there would soon be a Nuclear Arms Race in the middle east. America will not be held hostage to nuclear blackmail. We will not allow American Cities to be threatened with destruction and we will not allow a regime that chants death to america to get access to the most Deadly Weapons on earth. Todays action sends a critical message. The United States no longer makes empty threats. When i make promises, i keep them. Joining me, Nbc News International correspondent cal perry. Yesterday you tweeted and retweeted trumps decision will play out in internal iranian politics and you said this is going to strengthen the hard liners position which ali alluded to earlier. Talk to me why this is going to happen. The Obama Administration strategy, it is important we mention that the u. S. And iran didnt communicate from 1979 until about four years ago. The Obama Administration policy and Iranian Nuclear agreement was to start dialogue. I was working at the time for voice of America Service which was a tool used by the u. S. Government. In dialogue, the theory was you could help moderate the country of iran. You could help sort of move the hard liners away from the spotlight, open the dialogue, change things in iran. The question now is not only do you hand power back to hard liners, based on video from Iranian Parliament and everything i heard, sounds like you have, the bigger question now is from a geopolitical standpoint, have you put the u. S. On a path to war with iran and how will that play out. You look at lebanon, yemen, whats happening in qatar, iran can choose places to retaliate. Rue and ee was elected, one of the reasons because of the nuclear deal. Whose going to win amongst these factions in weeks and months now that the u. S. Pulled out of the deal, between the moderates and the hard liners. Who wins out on this one . Without a doubt, hard liners win out on this. The balance of power has now tipped in favor of much more conservative elements in iran. And thats exactly what they wanted. It was not in the favor of hard liners whose mantra 40 years is this is the great satan, we must not have contact with them. It will only be to our detriment. Now their call is ringing true in iran. Theyre saying look, the Supreme Leader came out and said we sat down, negotiated the nuclear deal with america, but it is never ending. If we sat down, negotiated about regional influence and missiles, they find something else. This is the why they found never to talk to america again and it greatly empowers him. Is there fear theres impending war, whether or not on iranian soil or syria or yemen involving iranian soldiers or on their own soil, do iranians fear this could be around the corner because of whats going on . Theres a lot of rationing, hear the word war coming up, that israel is feeling threatened by iran, iran is getting closer and closer to israeli facilities via syria, but i dont think iran wants to start a conflict. It will be detrimental to iran and detrimental to israel and other countries in the region, costs are very high and outcome completely unpredictable. If israel was to lure iran into something, if they continuously hit iranian assets in syria, you might see retaliation from iran. Who knows at this stage. One major shift we are seeing is talk of regime change in iran which makes me think about north korea, we have pompeo beginning talks now with north korea. How is talk of regime change in iran going to effect that, considering the biggest fear kim jongun has, the reason he was doing the Ballistic Missile testing and building up their nuclear arms was because he wanted to protect himself from countries like the United States trying to change the power. What all of this does is agree to the price of doing business with kim. He has his own reasons to deal. I think those reasons remain, pressure from china, collapsing internal economy, desire to bring his country closer to international standard. He has his own reasons. What this will do, he goes to the negotiating table with trump, he will want to see concessions up front. That i suspect is a big conversation. Thats a big part with the president of south korea. He is going to want south korea and china, the two countries that have to bankroll north korea emergence from 17th century to the 21st, he will want that money up front, want ironclad guarantees from them no matter if trump changes his mind or the next president changes his mind, show me the money first. Thank you all for joining me. And President Trump also had a big announcement regarding americas other Foreign Policy crisis, north korea. At this very moment secretary pompeo is on his way to north korea in preparation for my upcoming meeting with kim jongun. Relationships are building, hopefully a deal will happen. Weve got meetings set up, we have our meeting scheduled, the l location, time, date, everything is picked. Looking forward to a great success. We think relationships are building with north korea. Well see how it all works out. Are the americans coming home . Well all soon be finding out. We will soon be finding out. It would be great if they are. Well soon be finding out. Thank you very much. South koreans reporting secretary pompeo who arrived in north korea is expected to bring the three detainees home with him, according to an official from the president s office. A different spokesperson walked back comments saying it was more hope than confirmation. Pompeos second trip there this year. Chinese state media confirmed reports that kim jongun was in china earlier this week releasing extended video of him meeting, spending time with the president s president. Rudy guiliani telling nbc news that Robert Mueller rejected an offer from trumps team to answer written questions instead of a sit down interview. Guiliani says the offer and rejection took place ten days ago during the first meeting with mueller. Polls show the vast majority of the public supports the president taking part in some form. 76 of americans say yes when asked if trump should cooperate and be interviewed, down slightly from january, 53 . Republicans continue to support trump being interviewed, though that number has fallen 20 points. 76 back an interview. In the wake of allegations from schneiderman being replaced, the new york solicitor general will serve as acting attorney general until state lawmakers can vote on a replacement. She was sworn in yesterday, becoming new yorks first female attorney general. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo asked for a special prosecutor to investigate allegations against schneiderman. He spoke out about the accusations yesterday. No one is above the law. No one should be afraid to come forward. If it is the president of the United States, if it is the attorney general of new york, ment nobody is above the law. Welcome back, everybody. Despite republicans concerns that Don Blankenship could win, attorney general Patrick Morrissey is the winner of the republican primary with 35 of the vote. Morrissey beat out jenkins and blankenship who came in distant third. Last night, he conceded and told nbc news he doubts he will run again. Simone, good to talk to you again. We saw both republicans and democratic voters in four states vote in primaries yesterday. Did you see any sort of surprises, things that stood out to you in yesterdays results . Probably the Biggest Surprise is the first incumbent of the cycle to lose as North Carolina in the ninth district, not a shock he had a competitive primary. Narrowly defeated his challenger mark harris in 2016 only in a recount by 130 votes. Lot of people thought he was doing better, taking the race more seriously. This is a wake up call for other republicans who are not as used to facing close elections that they need to be ready, whether for primary or possible blue wave for november. Considering some surprises you mentioned, incumbent losing as well, what kind of clues could this give us ahead of mid terms . Biggest take away i have from last night is theres a lot of anti antiincumbent. We saw most congressmen running for Senate Nominations lose. In indiana, luke messer, evan jenkins. The only one that one was in ohio. He was backed by President Trump really early on, little different from some of the other knlds th candidates that are trying to get trump endorsement. Thank you. According to testimony released before her appearance this morning, gina haspel plans to offer her personal commitment that under her leadership, the cia will not restart detention and interrogation practices. The nomination of haspel who was on the hill monday meeting with Committee Members has drawn intense scrutiny because of her role in a top secret cia program where dozens of terrorism suspects were subjected to enhanced interrogation, involving deprivation of sleep and water boarding. What is unclear, whether she will reveal her personal opinion of the techniques which was not included in excerpts. It is not clear if haspel will go into detail about her role in the controversial use of the techniques. Lets check the weather with meteorologist bill karins. Allergy season is upon us. M. , political reporter for axios, alexi mccammen. Talk to us about axios one big thing. It shows that democrats got more votes for their money since every special election since President Trump was elected in 2016. Democrats and republicans are going toe to toe in the republican wars. Democrats spend less money per vote in the special elections and overperformed in every competitive special election since 2016. How worried should republicans be in the runup to the mid terms, according to your reporting . I know the last time that democrats overperformed in this way and my reporting shows that democrats have sort of narrowed the partisan gap in the races by 16 Percentage Points when some reports showed that they only need to outperform by three points to take back the house. The last time this happened was in 2006 when democrats retook the house with 30 house seats. Think that should worry republicans. It should also worry them that theyre spending less resources in these races and overperforming in the way that they have. At the end of the day democrats need to start winning more races if they want to take back the house. They only won two of the seven special elections we have highlighted and thats not going to get them more house seats. It seems like its going to be a lot less about money and more about message in the runup to november. It comes down to message. And money helps and candidates are a big part. Democrats have put up pretty solid candidates across the board and across the country since 2017 elections started. Republicans have had some sort of lackluster candidates, it is driving the message home. Whether its from the candidates or whether from the parties themselves. Lets switch gears. I know that axios is looking at how Stormy DanielsMichael Avenatti, who is going to be on morning joe today, is trumping President Trump at his own game of making headlines. Talk to me about that. Michael avenatti is always on cable news. Hell be on morning joe after this. He is building a big social media following. Hes breaking news on twitter. Teasing big announcements in a sort of reality show style. And that all sounds familiar because it exactly how the president operates himself. And you know one thing that Michael Avenatti said yesterday when he was on cnn is he underpromises and oversells. And i think that is a big part in how hes driving the news and getting under the president s skin. And hes obviously been criticized for sort of his pr campaign surrounding all this. But hes said look, its working. Exactly. And there will always be critics. He is on cable tv all the time. But one interesting thing he said as well about this is because he is so public and because he is underselling and overperforming, people who see him on tv are apparently according to him, give him information which hes using to expose new things, which i thought was fascinating. Weve been looking at the president s decision on the iran deal a lot. Huge news from yesterday. Axios has some reporting on the president s thought process. Through it all. Tell us what you know. A source close to the president told axios that trump was in high spirits yesterday, before making this highstakes decision that will have global implications. And that makes sense when you think about that this was pulling out of the iran deal was a Major Campaign staple for the president when he was running in 2016. But the interesting thing is that he was sort of you know gun ho and very confident yesterday. And another white house official told axios that the president loves it when experts in different fields go on tv and are upset or having breakdowns as he calls it about the decisions that hes making. Hes fuelled by the chaos and controversy and he was apparently in high spirits ahead of the decision. I know that ben rhodes visited axios yesterday, part of the Obama Administration, part of the iran deal as well. What did he have to say about the decision . Ben rhodes said it was a bizarre, shortsighted decision. He said it seemed that the president was only thinking about domestic policy and not thinking about what it means to own iran in a potential crisis abroad and it really speaks to the way that the president operates, hes always thinking about making America Great again, what it it means to us and less apparent, whether or not hes thinking about the global implications.
