It is wednesday, january 31. We begin with President Trump last night at the state of the union. Taking center stage on capitol hill, delivering his first state of the Union Address. The white house billed it as one that would be unifying and bipartisan. The president left behind his usual fiery rhetoric trading it in for a more subdued tone to highlight his 34riaccomplishmen. He called on lawmakers to come together for what he called a new american moment. I call upon all of us to set aside our differences, to seek out Common Ground and to summon the unity we need to deliver for the people. This is really the key. These are the people we were elected to serve. This in fact is our new american moment. There has never been a better time to start living the American Dream. So to every citizen watching at home tonight, no matter where youve been or where youve come from, this is your time. If you work hard, if you believe in yourself, if you believe in america, and then you can dleem anythin dream anything, you can be anything, and together we can achieve absolutely anything. So despite the president s many statements, a number dont stand up to reality. His claim that the republican tax cuts provide tremendous relief for the middle class is misleading. While they do get a tax cut, those cuts are actually not permanent. Ultimately taxes will rise. Meanwhile trumps claim that since the election 2. 4 million jobs have been created is partially true. His first year had 2. 1 million jobs added to the economy. Slowest year of job growth in the past six years. The other gains came under president obama. And worker wages have not been stagnant, they have been rising steadily for years according to the bureau of labor statistics. President trump spent a large part of his speech talking about his plans for immigration reform. He made an appeal for bipartisan on the issued before touting his administrations proposal. Tonight im extending an open hand to work with members of both parties, democrats and republicans, to protect our citizens of every background, color, religion and creed. My duty and the sacred duty of every elected official in this chamber is to defend americans, to protect their safety, their families, their communities, and their right to the American Dream because americans are dreamers too. The first pillar of our framework generously offers a path to citizenship for 1. 8 million Illegal Immigrants who were brought here by their parents at a young age. The second pillar fully secures the border. That means building a great wall on the southern border and it means hiring more heros like cj to keep our communities safe. The third pillar ends the visa lottery, a program that randomly hands out green cards without any regard for skill, merit or the safety of American People. The fourth and final pillar protects the Nuclear Family by ending chain migration. Under the current broken system, a single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited numbers of distant relatives. En under our plan, we focus on the immediate family by limiting sponsorships to spouses and minor children. All right. So the last pillar that the president mentioned about ending chain migration drew boos from democrats. Fact checks point out the comment that a single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited number of distant relatives is false. They can sponsor spouses, children, parents and siblings, but cousins cannot be sponsored for resident dencresidency. In addition, there are only so many family vvisas that can be. And joe kennedy delivered the democrat official response. Four he spoke from massachusetts touching on the anxiousness, anger and fear declaring this is not who we are. Bullies may land a punch, but they have never not once in the history of our United States managed to match the strength and spirit of a People United in defense of their future. Politicians can be cheered for the promises they make. Our country will be judged by the promises we keep. That is a measure our characters. That is who we are. Out of many, one. And senator Bernie Sanders of vermont harnessed his online following for a response after sitting in the chamber and listening to the address, sanders webcast focused on the economy and accused President Trump of evading the subject of russian meddling. Tonight donald trump touted the bonuses he claims workers received because of his socalled tax reform bill. What he forgot to mention is that only 2 of americans reported receiving a raise or a bonus because of this tax bill. 2 . How can a president not talk about the reality that russia through cyberwarfare interfered in our election in 2016, is interfering in democratic elections all over the world, and according to his own cia director will likely interfere in the 2018 midterm elections that we will be holding. How do you not talk about that unless perhaps you have a very special relationship with mr. Putin . So before last nights address, the white house issued a statement on whether President Trump would release the controversial gop memo alleging vaim an abuse surveillance abuse. Quote, contrary to a published report, there are no current plans to release the memo. The president has not seen or been briefed on the memo or reviewed its contents. But here is the interesting bit. As the president left the house chamber, a hot mic picked up his exchange between President Trump and Freedom Caucus republican congressman jeff duncan. Watch this. I just want to make a quick note, that statement by Sarah Huckabee sanders was released at 5 13 p. M. Last night. The hot mic was around 10 40 p. M. Do we think the president actually had the opportunity to read the memo in between the time Sarah Huckabee sanders said it its possible if he was preparing for the state of the union stevepeech. Im sure he had the interest. Devin nunes whose staffers wrote the memo alleging abuses that democrats say takes classified information out of context ignored reporters questions yesterday. Take a listen. Can i ask you about the release of the memo . Talk to the democrats. They talk to you, i dont. But last march congressman nunes was much more eager to get reporters attention holding two news conferences hours apart on capitol hill and at the white house when he attempted to back up President Trumps claim that he was spied on by president obama. Was the president also part of that collection, his communications . Yes. The president needs to know that these intelligence reports are out there and i have a duty to tell him that. Do you feel vindicated . I somewhat do. I very much appreciated the fact that they found what they found. But it was later revealed that nunes received his information from the white house. A new report from the daily beast says nunes is not sharing how much the white house has been involved. It says during mondays closed Door Committee meeting, he was asked if staffers had been talking with the white house as they compiled the memo. According to sources familiar with the exchangeexchange, nune otherwise finally responded im not answering. A lot to break down here. Joining us from washington, d. C. , author of the politico. Did you watch all of the state of the union . Once it was done, i hit the bed. So you can wake up and join us this morning. We appreciate you getting up early. You did better than both of us. Let me first get your take on the state of the union and somewhat a more toned down delivery than what we usually see from the president. He was aiming for a message of unity, thats what the house was putting on all throughout the day, that is what he delivered. Do you think he succeeded and what are your personal big take wereaways from the speech . So my colleagues had a great piece in Politico Magazine calling it the what if presidency. We saw a view of trump that you dont see most days in the white house. This was a speech that kind of rallied americans and seemed to hit in pretty bipartisan tones. And nancy pelosi looked bad when she didnt say that she didnt applaud at a certain point of time when most americans would have agreed with trumps sentiment. But i dont think that the speech will trump is not going to lose any of his bad habits that he has developed over the last year hes been president. So this is kind of a temporary respite. I was going to say, whatover something out today. So lets talk about the bad habits. Because joe kennedy iii obvious obviously give the democratic response referring to trump as a bully. Give me your take on it. A lot of people criticizing the fact that democrats didnt use this moment to choose a woman to lead this response, choosing joe kennedy iii instead. How do you think he did and do you think he has a future here . I think most ambitious politicians in congress all think of themselves as future president s or Vice President s. And joe kennedy is no different especially when you have the family legacy with jfk and Robert Kennedy and senator kennedy. So it is a very tough job giving that response because you are constantly overshadowed by trump. Joe kennedy a lot of people were speculating that he was drooling when he was speaking. It wasnt as bad as rubios water moment. And so but i think this introduces joe kennedy to millions of americans that have not seen him speak. Many had heard about him, but it was a grand platform for him for his future ambitions. Yeah, well see how that and not used to seeing a Live Audience as well. Yeah, i think they set it up more as a speech on a stanlgtge opposed to what Bernie Sanders did. All right. Stick around for us. Still ahead, much more on the state of the union including one lawmaker calling on police to arrest any undocumented immigrants. Plus new revelations about the panic in hawaii. Officials now say the worker who set the alert did not do it on accident. Well have those stories and a check on your weather. Hey. Pass please. Im here to fix the elevator. Nothings wrong with the elevator. Right. But you want to fix it. Right. So who sent you . New guy. What new guy . Watson. My analysis of sensor and Maintenance Data indicates elevator 3 will malfunction in 2 days. There you go. You still need a pass. 40 million americans are waking up to a gillette shave. There you go. As one of those workers, im proud to bring you gillette quality for less, because nobody can beat the men and women of gillette. Gillette the best a man can get. There are new revelations about the frightening false alarm in hawaii, the message that warned people to take cover from a missile attack. Investigators say the person who triggered that alert believed an attack was imminent. Miguel almaguer has more. This is not a drill. Reporter the alert that sent a wave of fear across hawaii was sent by an employee who thought the threat was real. Warning of an incoming ballistic missile, the message triggered panic. A missile may impact land or sea within minutes. Reporter the false alarm came from this Civil Defense bunker on january 13, 8 05 a. M. , a routine drill by the overnight shift. A phone recording starts exercise bei exercise, exercise, exercise. But includes this is not a drill. 8 07 a. M. , a day shift worker fearing a real missile attack warns the public from a computer. Then a drop down menu asks are you sure you want to send this alert . He clicks yes. That employee has been fired. He has performed and throughout the ten years he has confused drills in at least two times. Reporter it takes 38 minutes to issue a new alert, no threat. This is the state warning point. Reporter vern miyagi, the administrator, has resigned taking full responsibility. The fcc saying the state didnt have reasonable safe guards in place. Didnt have a plan for what to do if a false alert was transmitted. That is really serious. That is life and death. Really unprofessional. Reporter testing has been suspended, so has the publics faith in the warning system. Miguel almaguer, nbc news. Staggering development to that story. Lets get a check on your weather with bill karins. Bill, youre tracking a lunar event that is in store for us tonight. The super blue blood moon. What does the blood stand for in the name . Youll understand the blood not so much on the east coast, but in the midwest or west coast, when you go out in the next three, four however, it will have a reddish hue to it when were at totality and that is why it is called the blood. Well show you the pictures through the morning. So you dont want the clouds to block your view. The white shows you where the cloud cover is. Ohio valley, hit and miss. Youre locked in wisconsin, michigan. And a lot of clouds over wyoming. So here is the man that shows it. As the east coast as it is setting around 7 15, the beginning of the eclipse will be around 6 48 a. M. , so only 20 minutes of it. So you get just a little bit and then it will set. So not a great show for the east coast. But the midwest looks pretty good if you dont have the clouds. And it will be a great show in all of the west. So here is the timing of it. When we go through the umber, the darker portion of it, 6 48 east coast. And then the totality occurs at 7 51 a. M. Of course the sun is up then by the east coast. And then the midwest and west coast, you will see the reddish hue. And then everything is over with for the west coast by 6 07 a. M. So hopefully not too many clouds in your way. And bundle up in the east, it is cold out there all the way down through in glp if you through florida. If youre on the west coast, tweet us pictures of it. And nasa will have some Live Streaming of it. Thanks bill. Still ahead, a historic night in houston as james hardin does something no other player in nba history has ever done. James hardin is the first player in nba history to score 60 points in a triple double. Fueling the rockets win over the orlando magic. This is hardins fourth game this season to score at least 50. And the 60 point performance also sets a new franchise record. Meanwhile the cavaliers have announced kevin love will be out six to eight weeks due to a fracture in his left hand. This is after love suffered the injury earlier in the First Quarter when the ball was swatted out of his hands during the loss with the pistons. Ouch. Switching gears to the nfl, patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski told reporters he thinks he will be playing in the super bowl on sunday and hopes to be cleared by doctors today. Gronk underwent concussion protocol after a helmet to helmet contact during the Second Quarter of the afc championship game. That was a brutal hit. Meanwhile, we have the first blockbuster deal of the 2018 nfl offseason. The chiefs will trade alex smith to the redskins in return for a third round pick and kendall fuller. Smith is also expected to sign a four year extension with the d redskins worth 94 million, 71 million in guaranteed money. The move allows washington to split with kirk cousins who is a pending free agent. The trade cannot become official until the start of the league year on march 14. Im going to go out on a limb and say that is a pretty good deal, 71 million guaranteed. Not bad. But being a quarterback for the redskins comes with a lot of pressure. They have gone through a lot of quarterbacks. Rg3 not performing, cousins not performing. So the money is tempting, but if you dont perform in washington, you will be out. Thanks. Still ahead, much more from the state of the Union Address including what Fact Checkers have to say. And the president was caught on hot mic committing to the release of a memo. Lets start with the top story, in his bid to play uniter in chief, President Trump called on americans and leaders in congress to come together during his first state of the Union Address. The president used his 80 minute address to celebrate his accomplishments during year one in office. But also the call on the country to rally around his policy proposals for the year ahead. I want to talk about what kind of future were going to have and what kind of a nation were going to be. All of us together as one team, one people and one American Family can do anything. We all share the same home, the same heart, the same destiny and the same Great American flag. Together we are rediscovering the american way. In america, we know that faith and family, not government and bureaucracy, are the center of american life. The motto is in god we trust. Since we passed tax cuts, roughly 3 million workers have already gotten tax cut bonuses. Many of them thousands and thousands of dollars per worker. And it is getting more every month, every week. Something im very proud of, africanamerican unemployment stands at the lowest rate ever recorded. And hispanic american unemployment has also reached the lowest levels in history. Small Business Confidence is at an alltime high. The stock market has smashed one record after another, gaining 8 trillion and more in value in just this short period of time. So in the president s defense, it was 80 minutes, but a lot of that was because of the clapping. So could have been shorter. Despite the many statements, some do not stand up to reality. Trumps claim regarding the Unemployment Rate among africanamericans is correct, but he is taking credit for gains in a began under former president obama. Meanwhile the claim that roughly 3 million workers have gotten bonuses as a result of the republican tax cuts appears to be true. The Advocacy Group americans for tax reform writes that at least 3 million americans are getting tax reform bonuses which is where trump likely got his figure from. And nbc news has not independently verified the groups figure. And arguably americas greatest National Security threat is north korea and that was certainly one of the most mentioned topics during the address. And while the president did not reveal any new policies per se, trump touted his strategy for reignining in the rogue regime. But no regime has suppressed its own citizens more totally or brutally than the cruel dictatorship in north korea. s of missiles could threaten our home land. We are waging a campaign of maximum pressure to prevent that from ever happening. Past experience has taught us that complacency and concessions only invite aggression and provocation. I will not repeat the mistakes of past administrations that got us into this very dangerous position. We need only look at the depraved character a of the north korean regime to understand the nature of the Nuclear Threat it could pose. Now among the attendees last night were the parents of on the t otto warmbier. You are powerful witnesses to a menace that threatens our world and your strength truly inspires us all. Thank you very much. Thank you. Tonight we pledge to honor ottos memory with total american resolve. The warmbiers received several extended several occasions. Trump also called out another attendee who defected from north korea back in 2006. In a series of tweets hours before the state of the union, republican congressman paul goss ech gos gosser said he called on addressing any undocumented immigrants that attended the address saying any illegal aliens attempting to go through security should be arrested and deported. Now, some democrats invited d. R. E. A. M. Ers as congress and the white house continue to hammer out an immigration deal. Gosar received backlash. A spokesperson for paul ryan said that the speaker clearly does not agree with gosar and jeff flake responded with, quote, this is why we cant have nice things. Now flake is one of six senators working on a bipartisan deal to protect Daca Recipients. Yesterday he said that gosars notion is just not right. So lets talk more about this. Become with us, daniel lippman. So lets talk about reaching a bipartisan deal when it comes to immigration. We have a march dead line of scrimmage. The white house putting out the proposal which the president drove home last night that the far right not necessarily agreeing with spryiupplying a p to citizenship. The left thinking the president is holding the Daca Recipients hostage. What is the likelihood that we could reach a bipartisan agreement by the march deadline . I would caution you that it is not a strict march deadline as it used to be because of a court ruling that said that trumps reskricinding of daca w illegal. Those d. R. E. A. M. Ers would stay in the country indefinitely until the Supreme Court weighs in. We did see a glimmer of hope last night because dick durbin has been negotiating this compromise which has taken a long time to get past both the republican and democratic negotiators. He sat near the entrance to the president and he shook his hand, hoping to build on some good will he has created with the president. And so were just kind of stuck in a wait and see mode until there is a new deadline, we wont see much progress. Could that handshake be a signal that a daca deal is on the horizon. And the theme was bipartisanship, one area that a lot of people have speculated could be an area where there can be some agreement is infrastructure. He made a fresh pitch for that. How is this being received, could this be the area or the topic or the policy where we could actually get bipartisanship agreement . That has always been the hope for infrastructure because it is not a democratic or republican issue temperature it issue. It is an issue that ekt if as all americans. And i think President Trump stunned a lot of congressmen and senators because he gave out the figure of 1. 5 trillion. Everyone was expecting, you know, a 1 trillion package. But the issue is who pays for it. It is hard to see republicans voting for hundreds and hundreds of billions of dollars of taxpayer money on this important subject. Daniel lippman, thank you. In a hot mic moment, the president gave his commitment to release a memo alleging intelligence abuses by the fbi, this as the Washington Post cites people briefed on the meeting that Top Justice Department officials Rod Rosenstein and chris wray appealed to on john kelly to stop him. The post reports on monday shortly before the House Intelligence Committee voted to make the document public Rod Rosenstein warned kelly that the memg kn memo could jeopardize classified information. Rosenstein who supervises the Mueller Investigation into russias interference in the 2016 election said the Justice Department was not convinced that the memo accurately describes its investigative practices. Rosenstein says it could set a dangerous preside dangerous precedent. And paul ryan stood up for the releefts memo saying to fox news, get it all out there. Cleanse the organization. How damaging is this memo . Well, ill let people see that for themselves. The question that we feel we have to look into is were peoples Civil Liberties violated in the fisa process. We are the legislative branch of government. It is our job to conduct oversight on behalf of the American People of the executive branch in case any powers were abused by the executive branch. There may have been malfeasance at the fbi by certain individuals. So it is our job in conducting transparent oversight of the executive branch to get to the bottom of that. This is a completely separate matter there would be muellers investigation. And his investigation should be allowed to take its course. Washington post reports that the inspector on general is examining Andrew Mccabes handling of the Hillary Clinton email probe in the final weeks of the election. People familiar with the matter tell the post that the internal investigation has been asking witnesses why fbi leadership waited three weeks to examine emails found on a laptop belonging to anthony weiner. No new information was found, but the disclosure in late october 2016 rocked the president ial race. Mccabe is cast as a central figure in that episode, though it is unclear if the Inspector General has reached any conclusions. A message to employees from fbi director chris wray made it clear that the report led to mccabe being pushed aside. The doj declined to comment while mccabe did not respond. Stormy daniels has apparently walked back an official Statement Released in her name yesterday denying that she and President Trump had an affair back in 2006. Her publicist released this statement which said over the past few weeks, i have been asked countless times to comment on reports of an alleged sexual relationship i had with donald trump many, many, many years ago. Fact of the matter is each party to this alleged affair denied its existence in 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2017 and now begin in 2018. I am not denying this affair because i was paid hush money as has been reported in overseas tabloids. I am denying the affair because it never happened. So here is the thing though. Last night daniels in an interview remained silent on the affair but said she did not know that that statement he read came from. Did you sign this letter that was released today . I dont know. Did i . Wait a minute. That you can say, right . That does not look like my signature. It doesnt look like your signature. So youre saying perhaps this letter was written and released without your approval . Do you know where it came from, do you have any idea . I do not. So do you deny getting to the bottom of that. Amazing. Trumps attorney michael cohn has denied the alleged relationship, but remained silent of the report of paying daniels 130,000 to not discuss. Daniels issued a statement on january 10th denying a that she and trump had a relationship, but in a 2011 in touch interview, daniels is quoted saying she and trump had a sexual relationship. And the state department is pushing back against criticism that the Trump Administration has received for not implementing new sanctions relating to a 2016 Russian Election sbhfrninterference. Citing a provision saying that monday wasnt actually a deadline but a start date on which the government could begin to impose new sanctions should it be deemed necessary. The Administration Says since the threat of additional sanctions has been enough of a det determe determent, so no need for new ones. Meanwhile the Treasury Department is under fire for imposing any penalties or sanctions against people named in the congressionally mandated list of individuals with ties to Vladimir Putin which was also released on monday. Yesterday secretary Steve Mnuchin says he believes there will be new sanctions at some point in the future. Also yesterday the treasury admitted that the senior political figures named in the report are drawn from public sources including the goechlgt of ru government of russia and press reports and oligarchs are also simply derived from open sources including forbes list of most wealthy russians and that the criteria to making that list was based on the forbes report. Lets change gears and get a check on your weather with bill karins. Bill, youre tracking lunar event, a super blue blood moon. Tell us about it. We actually have the pictures up. In about four, five minutes, well see a slight dimming and then about 6 48 a. M. Is when well start to see this is from Armstrong Flight Research center in california. And that is where you will see the totality. So if you cant see it at your house, nasa tv has it live. So you can search for that. Unfortunately, there are some clouds to deal with especially in the great lakes area. A little bit of cloud cover through wyoming and the Pacific NorthwestWashington State not going to have a great view. So the moon will be setting at about 7 15 on the east coast, so you will maybe about 20 minutes to get out there and view it on the horizon. You will only see a little partial portion of it disappearing. And that will be about it. But almost totality chicago to dallas. Chicago is a little iffy with the cloud cover. So partial eclipse begins at 6 48, again a little dimming. And then we get to title at 7 51 a. M. 4 51 on the west coast. Central time 6 a 55 6 51, a nic there. And we are seeing chilly temperatures. So even in florida, jacksonville, 35 windchill this morning. Negative 4 in buffalo. But here is the good news. This afternoon looks like a beautiful last day of january. Mild temperatures, guys, california all the way through areas of chicago and dallas. So some good stuff to end the month, but colder and back to reality once february arrives. And you can look directly at this one, its different than the no, no, hopefully dont need the glasses. Good tip for President Trump in case he is watching.
