Show her how it should be done. And then the interview with President Trump, do they delay it, limit the scope or avoid it altogether . Good morning, everyone. Its monday, january 29th. I am Ayman Mohyeldin along with louis burgdorf. We begin with last nights Grammy Awards. Recording artists like cher, snoop dogg and a 2016 candidate read from the Trump Administration tellall book. Fire and fury spoken word auditions, take one. Trump wont read anything. He gets up halfway through meetings with World Leaders because he is bored. Cut. Sorry, john. Its wonderful. It just feels a bit too smooth. I dont think its going to work. If trump is not having his 6 30 dinner with steve bannon, more to his liking, he was in bed by that time with a cheeseburger. Why am i even reading this [ bleep ] . I cant believe in this. I cant believe that he really thats how he lives his life . He is a long time fear of being poisoned pup one reason why he liked to eat at mcdonalds, nobody knew he was coming and the food was safely premade. Thats it. Weve got it. Thats the one. You think so . So however Ambassador Nikki Haley was not laughing at the matter. In fact, she tweeted out, i have always loved the grammys, but to have artists read the fire and fury book killed it. Dont ruin great music with trash. Some people love music without the politics thrown in it. Over the weekend, haley denied rumors. Speaking to Cnns Van Jones on saturday, jayz said the controversial comments this weekend from the president about africa added to a worsening climate of racism in america. Its disappointing and its hurtful. It really is hurtful more so. Like everyone feels anger. After the anger, its hurtful because youre looking down on a whole population of people and youre so misinformed because these places have Beautiful People and beautiful everything. And its just like this is the leader of the free world speaking like this. You dont take the trash out. You just keep spraying whatever over it to make it acceptable and then, you know, as those things grow, then you create a super bug. Now we have donald trump the super bug. You can imagine President Trump fired back at jayz yesterday tweeting out somebody please inform that jayz because of my policies, black unemployment has just been recorded to be at the lowest raid ever recorded. During his interview, jayz was asked about whether its okay for trump to say terrible things amid the president thes claims about africanamerican unemployment. Here is how he responded. This is not about money at the end of the day. Money doesnt equate to happiness. It doesnt. Youre missing the whole point. You treat people like human beings. And then, you know, thats thats the main point. You cant treat someone like that goes back to the whole thing. Treat me really bad and pay me well. Thats not going to lead to happiness. And as morning joes Joe Scarborough pointed out on saturday, in fact, black unemployment is at a record low thanks to a massive declining trend starting back in 2010. Congratulations, barack obama. With less than 48 hours until the state of the union, lawmakers seem ready to clash about a memo between the Justice Department and the fbi. Byron york reports the how Intelligence Committee meets today at 5 00 p. M. And could vote on the memo. Its based on classified information. It allegeses abuse and bias. If approved, house rules will be called by the committee on whether trump supports or opposes releasing the memo. The Washington Post released last week trump sought the release of the memo. The Justice Department had actually called the release of the memo without prior review extraordinarily reckless. In a letter to nunes on that same day. On wednesday, john kelly spoke twice with attorney general Jeff Sessions and conveyed trumps desire to see the memo released. Trump is inclined to have that released just because it will shed light. All the rumorses are that it will shed light and help investigators come to a conclusion. They have been doing their investigation. They found something out. Ive gone down, ive read it. The committee voted this is the process. It voted to allow members to read it. They have the ability to vote and why are they afraid to send this to the Justice Department for review . Arent we separate but coequal . Dont we have the responsibility for oversight . You have the executive branch and the legislative branch. As the legislative branch looks at it, it will send it to the executive branch beforehand. They have the ability to approve it or deny sending it forward. Having read this memo, i think it would be appropriate the full public to view it. And you dont perceive that as the president tampering with an investigation . It has nothing to do with the president right now. So in this morning, attention will be put on Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein. Members of congress weighed in over the weekend on whether its time to pass one of the bipartisan bills put forward last year to safeguard the special counsels office. Hes cooperating. How about legislation to protect mueller . I dont think theres a need for legislation to protect mueller. Thats new york talk. I look at it strictly as the new york language they have which is different than most other people. Ive got legislation protecting mr. Mueller and aisle id be glad to pass it tomorrow. I see no evidence that President Trump wants to fire mr. Mueller now. You see legislation that you havent seen the need for legislation protecting mueller. Do you see the need now . It probably wouldnt hurt for us to pass one of those bills. If we dont do something before, trying to do something afterwards if there is a firing and then we try to reestablish the office, i think that would be quite difficult. And maybe it is appropriate now. And the wall street yurwall sts reporting the president s team is seek to go avoid an interview with the special counsel. In fact, people familiar with the matter say trumps attorneys are examining a 1997 ruling that president and their advisers enjoy protections about having to disclose information about their decisionmaking process or executive actions. They must show that such information contains important evidence that isnt available elsewhere because a court fight over an interview or a grand jury testimony could take months to resolve, legal scholars say trumps lawyers could use their willingness to invoke the case as a bargaining chip to get better terms for a bargaining interview. Joining us now, White House Correspondent sara westwood. Great to have you with us this morning. So lets talk about all of this because after this the president told reporters that he were looking forward to sitting down with mueller, weve seen his team back pedal somewhat. What is the driving concern about a sitdown with mueller . What are you hearing . There are some reports that those close to the president are actually terrified of him sitting down with bob mueller. Absolutely. People in and around the white house are very can confident that theres no underlying collusion mueller is going to find, but theyre a lot less confident that nobody involved in the investigation has taken any kinds of actions that could constitute obstruction, particularly at the beginning of the investigation prosecute before everyone realized how serious this probe really was. So i think theres some concern that if President Trump does sit down in front of robert mueller, that confidence that theres no collusion could cause him to potentially be reckless in that oneonone interview format in a way that could trap him into committing perjury or making some kind of misstatement that gets him into unnecessary amounts of trouble. And any good legal team would seek to limit the opportunities for President Trump to do that. So what do you make of all of these renewed efforts over the weekend . We have played a mashup of some of those sound bites of Congress Talking background protecting bob muellers job. We saw similar efforts fizzle out in the fall. Do you see the dynamics changing given the fact that weve seen this information that the president was considering firing bob mueller . I think theres a wait and see approach right now. Because President Trump is about to submit for an interview and were learning other high level officials including attorney general Jeff Sessions have sat down with interviews with robert mueller, theres a sense that potentially the investigation could be coming to a close. In the clinton email investigation, for example, when Hillary Clinton sat down for her oneonone interview with fbi investigators, that signaled the end of the probe because the fbi gathered all the evidence that they were going to look at, they sat down with her, checked that box, the investigation was over. So i think some republicans before they put their full weight behind legislation that could anger the president are going to wait and see if President Trumps interview is also going to signal the end of muellers investigation. Sarah, let me ask you quickly about this controversial classified nunes memo. It seem to be somewhat gaining steam from over the weekend. Do you think the House Intel Committee meeting today at 5 00 p. M. To consider declassifying it will do so . And if so, is this going to deepen the divide over the russia investigationing on capitol hill . Well, theres a lot of support and motivation among republicans to do Everything Possible to release this mem o d and they know they have the backing for this. But look, the house Intelligence Committees russia investigation has been the most partisan since the beginning and its why youve seen a lot of the serious investigative work taking place over on the senate side where politics stayed more out of it. You have to admit, it seems awkward that the department of justice and attorney general Jeff Sessions are finding themselves on the opposite side of what the president wants this morning. Sarah, well talk to you later on in the program. Thanks. Thanks. And a Senior Adviser to Hillary Clintons 2008 campaign accused of Sexual Misconduct was allowed to remain at her request. The New York Times reports that according to four people familiar with the situation, clintons Senior Adviser, berne strider, was accused of repeatedly sexually harassing a young subordinate. According to Campaign Documents from the time, the young woman alleged that strider gave her five kisses on the head and engaged in tracking of her whereabouts among other claims. Clintons Campaign Manager recommended strider be fired, but clinton decided against doing so. And the times reports that strider was docked several weeks pay in order to undergo counselinging and the young woman was moved to a new job. Years later, strider was hired to head the super pac correct the record. According to three people close to correct the Records Management strider was fired after several months for workplace issues, including allegations that he harassed a young female aide. In an interview with buzz feed, strider acknowledged many of the incidents as true and said for some he did not recall the incidents in the same way as the women did. Strider dismissed some of his actions as simply friendly or characteristics of his southern background. Clinton tweeted a response to the report on friday saying, i was dismayed when it occurred, but it was heartened the young woman came forward,s was heard and had her concerns taken seriously and addressed. I called her today to tell her how proi proud i am of her and to make sure she knows what all women should, we deserve to be heard. And senator marco rubio has fired his chief of staff after reports of Improper Conduct with staffers. Rubio said he traveled from florida to washington on saturday night to fire top adviser clint reed after learning about about those claims. Rubio said he was made aware of the allegations for the first time on friday and immediately began investigating the matter. Adding, quote, i had sufficient evidence to conclude that while employed by this office, my chief of staff violated Office Policies regarding proper relations between a supervisor and their subordinates. I further concluded that this led to actions which, in my judgment, amounted to threats to withhold employment benefits. Reed began working for rubio in 2015 as the iowa state director for his president ial campaign and stayed on to run his Senate Reelection campaign. Nbc news was not immediately able to reach reed for my comment. Still ahead, do they have 2020 vision . Two candidates who lost their partys primary are now talking about their political futures. I dont think he will seed if he continues on this path. On the medicine tirms, bush said, quote, if the election is nationalized and its not about the economy, then well lose. President trump is preparing to give his First Official state of the Union Address tomorrow. The president is expected to use the speech to celebrate economic progress under his administration while continuing to make the case for efforts to secure americas boarders. Nbc news White House CorrespondentKristen Welker has more. Poised to address a deeply divided nation at his first state of the Union Address tuesday, President Trump will aim to strike a tone of unity, echoing the optimism from his joint address to Congress Last year. A new chapter of american greatness is now beginning. In a preview, one Senior Administration official says the theme this year building a safe, surround and proud america, the president preparing to highlight four key points, jobs in the economy with his focus on the tax victory. Its the largest tax cut in the history of our country. The president expected to press congress to pass a trillion dollar infrastructure package and hell call for Immigration Reform after rolling out a plan this week that aufrts d. R. E. A. M. Ers a path to citizenship along with border funding. Another key focus, National Security, making his case for a stronger military, and a tough approach to north korea. We will defend our common security. The president will deliver the address in the shadow of the escalating russian probe, all setting up a historic moment with high stakes. Gives the them a chance to make a case for his administrations achievements, lay out a road map on the year ahead without having to talk about russia. Thanks to Kristen Welker for that report. Meanwhile, the mother of a 16yearold long island girl who was killed by an mi13 member has been envited to the white house for the state of the union speech. The New York Times reports this morning that House Republicans controversial memo on the fbi and the Justice Department targets Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein who has overside of the special counsels russia probe. According to the times, people familiar with the memo says it extends an application for a former Trump Campaign associate carter page shortly after taking office last spring. Nbc news has not confirmed this report. The the renewal allegedly shows that the Justice Department under President Trump saw region to believe that page was acting as a russian agent. Court documents earlier disclosed that page enter acted with an undercover russian spa in 2013, but page denies he would have knowingly cooperated with russian intelligence. According to the Washington Post, the president has told close advisers that the memo is starting to make people realize how the fbi and the Mueller Probe are bias against him and that it could provide him with grounds for either firing rosenstein or forcing him to leave. Trump has privately derided rosen stein as the democrat from baltimore. However, rosenstein is not a democrat. The Washington Post cited two people familiar with the president s comments on how he views the department of justice. Trump has complained that confidence and aides in recent weeks that he does not understand why he simply cannot give orders to, quote, my guys and what he sometimes calls the trump Justice Department. On saturday, white house special counsel ty cobb responded we do not find it to be a questions dense that there is onslaught of false stories circulating in what appears to away coordinated effort to disaster and defrequent from new revelations about already reported buysace and corruption. Las vegas mogul steve wynn with stepped down as chair of the rnc on saturday. Wynns decision followed the report in the wall street journal that Sexual Misconduct claims from his employees spanning decades. Wynn has denied the allegations made in the wall street journal article. Now, Republican NationalCommittee ChairRona Romney Mcdaniel released a statement accepting wins resignation on saturday after speaking with President Trump. According to sources with direct knowledge of that conversation. Now, wynn, who the president has called a, quote, great friend, has been a prolific republican donor, the particularly over the past decade. A spokesperson for paul ryan confirmed to nbc news that he will donate the 1,000 donation he received from wynn in 2016 to a local charity. So back with us again, sarah westwood. I want to get your reaction to what youre hearing in washington in the fallout of this steve wynn with story. Are we move away, you think, from they misconduct allegations being used in partisan attacks . This weekend, you had a guy on the republican side and a guy on the democrat side. Were hearing claims on both sides of the aisle about misconduct. Unfortunately these cases are happening with such frequency that we are starting to see a bipartisan standard emerge as to how parties deal with these situations and that does involve campaigns or political organizations coming under pressure to return or donate contributions that theyve received from accused figures for the democrats that happened with harvey weinstein, now with republicans. Were seeing gop members and organizations come under pressure to return the donations they got from steve win. But in the particular case of wynn, the pain, i think, is more longterm for the Republican Party. It wasnt just that wynn was a deep pocketed donor, but that he had a very powerful fundraising prowess. Thats why he was the rncs fundraising chair, thats part of why the rnc had such fundraising advantage over the dnc last year, because of wynns connections and how capable he was at fundraising. So this is not a good time for the Republican Party to be without its fundraising juggernaut. And were seeing some republicans take actions and in some cases people are pushing back saying wait for investigations. I want to talk to you about your latest piece because its looking at all the issues following the president particularly ahead of his state of the Union Address. How high are the stakes here . Can the president really reset the conversation . And which president are we expected to see, the guy who sticks to the teleprompter and stays on point or is he somebody that could potentially go offscript a year into his presidency . President trump has the opportunity to turn the page on all this negative russia coverage if he does a good job with the state of the union and delivers on what his critics are looking to see, which is laying out a more comprehensive policy agenda hahn the white house has done in previous weeks, which is keeping to a more unifying tone that is typical of these types of addresses and not turning it into a partisan address. President trump will be under pressure not to be the Campaign Rally president , not to be the president who makes arrant comments that overshadow the rest of his scripted remarks. Thats the kind of president we sought at the joint address to Congress Last year and he received bipartisan accolades. Its entirely possible we could see that kind of trump on tuesday and hell be under pressure from his aides to stay very much to his remarks. And we saw it last week when he was in davos, switzerland, as well. Great you have to with us this morning. Thanks for your insights. Thank you. And despite a states invitation, President Trump has still yet to visit americas closest ally in the United Kingdom and it apparently centers on the reception he is set to receive. Trump, who is deeply unpopular in the United Kingdom, told Prime Minister theresa may last year that he would not make the trip until she could promise him a warm welcome. With may reportedly responding by saying there wasnt much she could do. Bloomberg reports that during their phone conversations, trump frequently interrupts the Prime Minister, leaving her seconds to speak before he begins another monologue. Now trump is responding to outcry from the British Parliament and those who want his state invitation rescinded and banned from the country. I think its good. I think im very popular in your country. Lets not be too hasty mr. President. I hadnt heard about banning, but i think a lot of the people in your country like what i stand for and to those who dont and i stand for tough boarders. To those who dont, what do you say to them . I dont care. I dont care. I dont say anything because you know why . I dont care. The Trump Administration is debating whether to take over part of this countrys mobile network in a potentially unprecedented nationalization of infrastructure. Cnbcs willem marx joins us now. Mobile connectivity is an increasingly important part of National Security infrastructure in the United States. Its being reported that this is to guard against chinese influence, part of an effort there. The government itself would essentially pay to build out this 5g Network Across the United States and would sell access to the wireless carriers. This is due in part to the fact that the chinese have been so dominant in building these infrastructure firms. Figures also saying that either way, the government must work with the industry to make the 5g networks as secure as possible and the less unprecedented move would be for the carriers themselves to build out these rival networks which, of course, would be far more expensive and time consuming. To afghanistan capital city of kabul where a string of terror attacks in the last week left well over 100 people dead and severals more wounded. On saturday, at least 103 people were killed after explosives at an ambulance exploded at a Security Check point, coming a week after 22 people were killed, including 4 americans during an attack on a hotel in the city. The taliban has claimed responsibility for both of those attacks. And isis is now claiming responsibility for an attack this morning on an Army Garrison near a military academy leaving 11 Afghan Army Soldiers dead. Its the second in kabul in the last week. Joining us live from london, nbc news foreign correspondent. Good to have you with us, lucy. Its increasingly appearing that kabul is under siege from the taliban and increasingly so from isis despite the Trump Administration stepping up efforts in that country. Well, that might be related. Afghanistan is no stranger to violence, but it is unusual to see this during the winter months. The socalled fighting season is the springtime when the taliban launched their annual spring offensive. Instead we saw these stepped up attacks, packing an ambulance full of explosives is one example. Were seeing isis join the fray. That Group Targeting the office of an aide agency last week as well as the military academy today. Now, it is a sign, unfortunately, that despite more than 16 years of fighting by the u. S. Led coalition and Afghan Security forces that the taliban and other groups are again growing stronger. President trump has increased the number of troops in afghanistan from 8,500 to 14,000, but those new troops are not likely to have much of an impact on the security situation. Afghanistans own forces are weak. Some 10,000 died in fighting the last week. Stepped up attacks are a response to the expanded u. S. Presence. The taliban spokesman described the bombing as a clear message for trump and his hand kissers. You speak from the barrel of a gun, dont expect afghans to grow flowers in response. Of course unfortunately as with these things its ordinary afghans who pay the price. Absolutely heart breaking to see what is happening in that country. Thank you.
