Later, President Trump pressured to part ways with chief strategist steve bannon as infighting welcome back the white house spills out into the public view. Good morning. Its tuesday, august 15th. While in a statement almost 50 hours in the making, President Trump denounced hate groups by name as he offered condolences and a plan of action. After a white supremacist rally on friday and saturdays deadly violence in charlottesville. The president spoke after meeting with attorney general Jeff Sessions and fbi director christopher ray. The department of justice has opened a civil rights investigation into the deadly car attack that killed one innocent american and wounded 20 others. To anyone who acted criminally in this weekends racist violence, you will be held fully accountable. Justice will be delivered. Racism is evil, and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs rg including the kkk, neonazis, White Supremacists, and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as americans. Now, the move came in the relief to some in the white house. The a. P. Reported that several of trumps senior advisors, including new chief of staff john kelly, had urged him to make a more specific condemnation, warning that the negative story would not go away and that, in fact, criticism from fellow republicans could endanger the president s legislative agenda. After signing a memorandum on trade policy later in the afternoon, the president was asked about the timeline. The president they have been condemned. Why are we not having a press Conference Today . You said on friday we would have a press conference. We had a press conference. Can we ask you some more questions then, sir . I like real news. Not fake news. Youre fake news. Thank you, everybody. The president continued to k that the media in the hours after his comments tweeting out made additional remarks on charlottesville and realized once again that the Fake News Media will never be satisfied. Truly bad people. All right. Now to the latest on the investigation itself. The man accused of killing a woman when he rammed his car into a Group Protesting that white nationals rally. He appeared in a charlottesville courtroom via video link and did not enter a plea. Fields also has a brief military record. The Army Confirms that he reported for basic training in august of 2015 but was released four months later after failing to meet training standards. He has been working as a private Security Guard. Fields was on vacation when he drove to charlottesville and has since been fired. Meanwhile, Police Records released from the Police Department in kentucky where he once lived with his mother painted the picture of a violent teen. Joining us now from charlottesville, virginia, maya rodriguez. Good to talk to you this morning. Tell us more about the Police Records that the authorities found out about and what happened in court yesterday as well. Well, fields was relatively quiet during his First Court Appearance, but he did tell the judge that he could not afford an attorney. The Public Defenders Office said that they could not represent him because somebody in their office had been injured during those protests on saturday. The judge was forced to hire a local attorney for fields to represent him in the future. Now, were also learning more about fields troubling past from Police Department 911 records coming out of the florence Police Department in kentucky where he used to live with his mother. There were allegations of Domestic Violence after she had placed several 911 calls. One of the first calls came in in 2010. Thats when fields was 13 years old. He allegedly took his mothers phone and smacked her in the head after she told him he could not play video games. He allegedly then said he was going to beat her up, and he locked her in the bathroom. Then there was another call allegedly from 2011 that shows his mother called 911 because fields was being threatening. She is disabled, in a wheelchair, and she felt scared. Then in another 2011 call to 911 he was threatening towards his mother. He had spit on her, and his mother said he was standing before her with a knife. Now, again, it does not appear that there were ever any charges relating to these incidents dents, and it does not appear that fields had a criminal record. His next court date is set for august 25th. We heard from the mother yesterday as well. We showed that everybody on the show. Maya rodriguez for us. Thank you. Meanwhile, cities across the nation are protesting against racism including the town where suspect james fields lived most recently after leaving kentucky. In the a video of a peace rally held there yesterday. Other cities rallied to urge local leaders to get rid of confederate monuments. Demonstrators in durham, north carolina, took it upon themselves to topple the statue of a soldier. President trump made his first return to his new york City Residents since inauguration. He tweeted feels good to be home after seven months, but the white house is very special. Theres no place like it. And the u. S. Is really my home. Joining us now from washington Deputy News Editor from axios, alexy. Great to have you with us. Thank you for having me. Axios and others are reporting that the fbi and dhs warned in may of a persistent lethal threat posed by White Supremacists. We know that has been one of the biggest threats in this country for many yoerz. Tell us why this matters given the president s response. Sure. So when he was a candidate for president President Trump said during a rally in ohio that anyone who cannot explicitly name an american enemy or an enemy to america is not fit to lead this country, and thats exactly what he did over the weekend when he didnt explicitly condemn White Nationalists, neonazis, the kkk. He was saying that he wouldnt be fit to lead the country. Also, this suggests that he has a team of people working to give him real news, not fake news. Real news about the stats of violence of White Nationalists, and he just continues to ignore it. Alexi, some groups are posting pictures from the rally as public shaming. Could this be an effective or owe potentially a legal mess here . I think the public shaming is pretty controversial and problematic. I dont know that its a deterrent in terms of getting these White Nationalists and neonazis to stop pushing forward on their agenda and this message. Some of them have lost their jobs because weve seen in the news and i think that will show them or give them a small wakeup call that this is not something that you can just keep going and doing. What will really change is the president is creating a stronger message that this is not okay, and this is not america. Let me ask you really quickly about the political fallout out of this for the president. Weve already seen some top executives leave hiS Manufacturing counsel, including from underarmour and merck with that very Public Statement that was put out. Are we going to see more political fallout from this, or do you think the president s comment yesterday where he used the words that many wanted him to use is going to contain this for the time being . Well, weve seen how some republicans are sort of saying theyre privately condemning this or privately wincing in the background without really coming forward, and i think for a lot of republicans, Donald Trumps statement yesterday explicitly condemning it will be enough for them to say, oh, look, he did it. We dont need to come forward and further criticize him. His Approval Ratings are already at a record low. The political fallout among his supporters, among people who already disapprove of him will only continue to get worse for him, but as i said before, i think republicans who arent exliftly condemning him now are going to say he made this comment. We dont need to come forward. All right. Thank you. Thank you. In the followup, three top ceos have now left President Trumps American Manufacturing Council Following this weeks deadly violence. The ceo of intel announced his and underarmours ceo did the same. Kenneth frazier of merck, a pharmaceutical company, was the first ceo to leave counsel. Trump lashed out on twitter writing now that ken frazier has resigned from president S Manufacturing council, he will have more time to lower ripoff drug prices. Then nine hours later he posted another tweet that red merck pharma is a leader in higher and higher drug prices at the same time taking jobs out of the u. S. Bring jobs back and lower prices. Other ceos saying theyre staying on the council for now, including top execs at new corps international, paper, and campbell soup, and representatives for ge and dow chemical use nearly identical language in saying they have no tolerance for hate, bigotry, or racism. Two Major Companies have canceled their internet domain registration of the daily stormer, a neonazi website that mocked Heather Heyer, the victim from this weekend. This all leads us into the big forecast for next monday. You may have heard about this little eclipse thing going on across the country. Well, the path of totally is this area of gray inside the white here. Of course, the big question is will we have rain or clear skies for that . Lets take you on the path as we go through the total eclipse. It will only last two to three minutes in any given one location. We take it over the top of kansas city and st. Louis. This will be a thunderstorm just to the south. Again, nothing organized. No huge storm systems. Hit and miss showers. A storm there possibly near missouri. The area of greatest concern i have is going to be over tennessee and also south carolina. The green shows you where our computers are saying it could be raining. The agree gray shows you where there could be clouds. Its summertime. You wouldnt expect showers and storms in the southeast this imtoo of year. Still six days away. Well find tune this forecast as we get closer. So many people have paid so much money to get to charleston or columbia, greeneville, knoxville, and at least they may want is to be stuck in the clouds. Quick question, is that going to be visible from those cities, or would folks thats where it is in totally. Thats complete darkness where. We may still have a shot. We may have a shot. Although we got our Safety Measures in our emails last night. Do not look directly at the sun. Definitely dont do that. I did know that. Thanks, bill. Jimmy fallon delivering an emotional monologue addressing the weekends deadly violence condemning President Trumps reaction to what took place. Take a listen. Even though the tonight show isnt a political show, its my responsibility to stand up against intolerance and extremism as a human being. What happened over the weekend in charlottesville, virginia, was just disgusting. The fact that it took the president two days to come out and clearly denounce racist and White Supremacists is shame fl. I think he finally spoke out because people everywhere stood up and said something. We all need to stand against what is wrong, acknowledge that racism exists, and stand up for what is right and civil and kind. To show the next generation that we havent forgotten how hard people have fought for human rights. We cannot do this. We cant go backward. We cant go backward. Bail has been denied for 20yearold james fields, the man accused of killing a woman when he rammed his car into a Group Protesting that White Nationalist rally. He and in a charlottesville courtroom via video link from the local jail and did not enter a plea. Meanwhile, Police Records released from the florence Police Department in kentucky where he once lived with his mother paint the the picture of a violent teen. His mom called 911 several times dating back to november 2010. In one report she accused house of representatives then 13yearold son of taking her phone and smacking her in the head because she told him to stop playing video games. In 2012 she called police and told them he was threatening her and that she was in a wheelchair and scared. Then a month later she said he spat in her face, and at one point stood behind her with a knife. We should note that no charges were ever filed. A lot to sort through this morning. Nbc correspondent maya rodriguez. What more can you tell us about the suspects background in terms of what weve learned about his identity . Well, as you mentioned, fields did have his First Court Appearance yesterday. He did appear Via Video Conferencing wearing that black and white inmate jumpsuit. He was denied bond, as you mentioned. We know that he had joined the army several years ago, but he did not complete basic training. They released him because he did not meet their training standards. He also worked as a Security Guard in ohio, but he was fired after saturdays incident. That incident, of course, killed 32yearold Heather Heyer and injured 19 others. One of those people who was injured on saturday spoke about what happened before and after the incident. Take a listen. I turned around. I seen somebody flying into me, and i could hear the loud, loud crash. It was like right beside me where he hit the other car. I was laying there, and a girl said you got to hold your head. Youre bleeding all over the place. You got to hold your head. You got to hold your head. There was a girl right beside me, and they were doing cpr on her, and every time they were doing chest compressions, i could feel it. I could feel her chest compressions were moving me. Thats when i realized, you know, something really, really, really bad happened. It wasnt just me. Now, fields has another Court Date Set for later this month. He told the judge he could not afford an attorney, but the Public Defenders Office here said they could not represent him because somebody in their office had been injured on saturday, so the judge was forced to assign him a local attorney instead. You can just hear how heartbreaking that testimony is in his account. Thank you. Joining us now from washington Deputy News Editor for axios alexi canon. The president finally coming out yesterday denouncing hate groups by name using the word neonazi, using the word white supremacist, using the word kkk. It took him two days. How is this being received in washington . Two days is certainly too long. Especially considering he received that report from the dhs and the fbi about violence committed by White Nationalists back in may. He has had three months to understand the stats, to understand the gravity of the situation, and even if he didnt have that, he saw the events just like everyone else. In washington it sort of is this idea that it was too little too late, and were seeing that among republicans, among democrats, and especially among his supporters who identify as altright or White Nationalists. David duke, the former leader of the kkk, basically said that donald trump is stripping white americans of their First Amendment rights by condemning them in this way. He is at a loselose situation now, and this is something he could have avoided if he had just condemned this in the beginning on saturday. Speaking of White Supremacists, many of these groups say this this is just the beginning for them. Obviously they now are in the spotlight. Whats fueling what seems to be this new energy among White Supremacists and the boldness for them to take these rallies out more publicly . There are a few things that are sort of emboldening White Nationalists in my view. One, they understand and recognize that the majority is certainly becoming minority is being abouting the majority. Thats causing them anxiety of the unknown. What their life will look like when theyre suddenly not the majority. There was a Washington Post poll in the end of june that showed that across rural areas in the u. S. , only 2. 3 of the population is foreignborn. These rural folks sort of dont know what life is like living among people who dont look like them. The third thing is donald trump and his rhetoric. He announced his president ial campaign ostracizing mexican immigrants. He wants to build a border wall that keeps brown people out of the country and keeps the country sort of looking like him. For the first time i think a lot of these White Nationalists and altright people had a president ial candidate or a political official who spoke to their fears, who spoke to their desires of keeping the country looking like them, and when donald trump is retweeting altright supporters in had the middle of the night like he did last night, he is emboldening these folks to continue with these rallies, to continue with these dangerous views, and its really dangerous in many ways. All right. Live in washington d. C. Thank you. Right now we have a new immigration plan from the Trump Administration thats cutting immigrants coming into this country by half if, in fact, that is put into place. That could only fuel what alexi was just talking about. As a Trump Administration nears its sevenmonth mark, the president is getting his worst ratings yet. A 34 job Approval Rating has hit a new low, while 61 of his disApproval Rating is at an alltime high. In context, bill clintons Approval Rating never dropped to 34 . George w. Bush hit 34 in april 2006 as the iraq war worsen. Rising gas prices and a gallop never found barack obama dropping to 34 during his eightyear presidency. Well, there are signs that shifting power in the sthado war within the Trump Administration, between chief strategist steve bannon and h. R. Mcmaster. For weeks mcmaster has faced biting tweets and headlines from the far right and breitbart where bannon was once the top editor. Bannon is said to be increasingly isolated, and axios reports that he has told associates that he thinks bannon is behind some White House Leaks and that he is fed up with whats seen as selfpromotion. According to the New York Times and other outlets, bannon is on thin ice with the new chief of staff john kelly. Kelly has told mr. Trumps top staff that he will not tolerate mr. Bannons shadow land the paper reports that rupert merdock told kelly and that bannon had to go. Now, this was before the president went to his bedminster golf course for vacation. Heres what former White House Communications director Anthony Scaramucci said last night about bannon and the ouster of reince priebus. This is you over here holding your thumbs in your belt like a gun slinger, and this is reince priebus. What is going on . Were you brought in just to get rid of him . Hmm, i dont want to say that. And sean spicer. Say it like the muuc. Give me some muuc here. The muuc of long island would say there is no love lost there. Look at the picture. You thought he was one of the leakers . I did. He is gone. Right . Who is leaking now . Is it steve bannon . Well, ive said that. I mean, ive been pretty open about that. Let me is steve bannon a leaker . I said he was. I got caught on tape saying he was, so have i no problem saying that. Is he going to be gone in a week . Thats up to the president. What you do think . What does the mu says uc think . If its up to me, but its not up to me. The president reportedly consulted with bannon throughout the weekend over how to respond to the charlottesville violence, and within some factions of the party, there are rez everybody ags about what would happen if bannon were to be dismissed. Congressman steve king of iowa told the times it would leave supporters crushed in Freedom Caucus chair mark meadows added that there is a concern among conservatives that washington d. C. Will influence the president in a way that moves him away from those voters that put him in the white house. An oklahoma man is facing charges for planning to bomb a building in Oklahoma City after the fbi stopped him from carrying out his attack. Officials say that agents arrested 23yearold jerry drake varnell. He tried to detonate what he believed to be a van loaded with explosives that he had parked next to a bank. In reality it was full of materials furnished by an undercover agent. The official complaint alleges that he initially wanted to blow up the Federal Reserve building in washington d. C. That was a huge fallout based on the fact that President Donald Trump failed to initially single out the White Nationalists when condemning the violence in virginia over the weekend and the three ceos who stepped down from the American Manufacturing council, those are intels underarmour kevin plank and kenneth frazier, the ceo of merck. As he was leaving he said americas leader must honor our fundamental values by clearly rejecting expressions of hatred, bigotry, and group supremacy. President trump, he slammed that statement tweeting that the merck ceo should now have more time to work on reducing ripoff drug prices, and this is after the two leaders initially had very good Relations Just back in july. Wont last long. It doesnt even get in the 90s. Only the upper 80s. That will feel warm, guys, because we havent been close to the 90s in the midatlantic or even the northeast for a while. Were on a slow downward spiral towards september. Sunset is depressing. Not that im not happy about it, but, you know. Summer is almost over. Thanks, bill.
