Police officers were killed and three others injured. During a press conference yesterday police said the suspect was killed at the scene and the governor called for calm during the recent spate of violence. Today has been a very tough day here in baton rouge, and in louisiana, and in our country. And absolutely unspeakable, heinous attack on Law Enforcement here in baton rouge claimed the lives of two Baton Rouge Police officers, one sheriffs deputy, and injured three others, one of whom today, right now as we speak, is absolutely fighting for his life. Its unjustified, its unjustifiable. The violence, the hatred just has to stop. Law enforcement officials identified the gunmans agavin long of kansas city. They believe heabilitied alone. Federal agencies including the fbi, atf and u. S. Marshal service are in baton rouge asistzing with the investigation as Police Departments across the country react to the news. The nypd has since ordered all of its officers to remain in groups of two. Now last night, president obama addressed the tense climate in the country after this latest shocking incident. Five days ago i traveled to dallas for the Memorial Service of the officers who were slain there. I said that that killer would not be the last person who tries to make us turn on each other, nor will todays killer. It remains up to us to make sure that they fail. That decision is all of ours. The decision to make sure that our best selves are reflected across america, not our worst. Thats up to us. We have our divisions, and they are not new. Now the shooting comes on the heels of the fatal attack on police in dallas, and the killing of alton sterling by police in baton rouge less than two weeks ago. Nbcs sarah dallof joins us with more from baton rouge. What can you tell us about the shooter and the investigation . Hi there, betty. It is shock and grief in baton rouge this morning, as we learn more not only about the gunman, but the three officers killed and those injured including three being treated at the hospital here behind me. The victims, 45yearold brad gar follow had served with the Sheriffs Office for more than two decades. Matthew gerald was in his rookie year with the Baton Rouge Police department and Montrell Jackson a decade with that force. He was the father of an infant son. He had recently posted a statement to facebook in reaction to the protests here in his town. It reads in part, please dont let hate infect your heart. The city must and will get better. Im working these streets so any protesters, officers, friends or family, if you see me and want a hug or want to say a prayer, ive got you. Now officials meanwhile say the lone gunman, as you said, was gavin long, a former marine sergeant whod been deployed to iraq in 2008. He lived in kansas city, missouri. He was shot dead after he lured the officers, the mayor says, to the site as part of an ambush attack. He was killed during that gun battle. Law enforcement continues to look in to possible motives, and if he may have been associated with any Antigovernment Movement including the one known as sovereign citizens. Yesterdays Fatal Shooting has added new security concerns as the Republican National Convention Kicks off today. Police are even pleading to prevent the states open carry law during the event. The head of clevelands police union is calling on the governor to declare a state of emergency, and temporarily suspend ohios open carry law. Leadership needs to do something to protect the men and women, the Police Department and the citizens. Reporter open carry was on display. One gun owner hoped to make a point with his assaultstyle rifle. This is to make people aware that there are good people out here, im not a bad person. Reporter city officials had already said they were altering the security plan following the killing of five officers in dallas. Brian casey sits on the safety board for the city council. Not only do we have to keep the delegates, and obviously the candidates, safe but everybody who wears a badge now. Is a target. Reporter the shooting is just the latest in a string of incidents in the last year that have shaped clevelands security plan. Including multiple violent protests at trump rallies. Hillary clinton releasing a statement saying there is no justification for violence, for hate, for attacks on men and women who put their lives on the line every day in service of our families and communities. The shooting will be addressed at tonights Republican National convention. It kicks off just a few days after trump added indiana governor mike pence on to his president ial ticket. Both men sat down for the first joint interview with cbs 60 minutes last night where the divisions were on full display. Went to iraq but that was handled so badly. That was a war that we shouldnt have entered because iraq did not knock your running mate voted for it. I dont care. What do you mean you dont care . This seemed more like not even arranged marriage, just seemed like a blind date. Like an awkward first date, more than even an arranged marriage or relationship thats already established. Thats what was strange about it that being the case though, can they use the Gop Convention to really convention potential voters that they are a unified team . Under normal circumstances, i would say yes. Because thats part of what conventions are about. You know, you roll out the partys ideas. You introduce both candidates. But as were seeing from the trump campaign, the whole campaign is personality driven, donald trump. In mike pences favor, or maybe disfavor, depending on how you look at it, most of the country doesnt know him. I think 86 of voters say they have no opinion about him, including 85 of republicans. So theres a potential that if donald trump wants to, he can showcase him, and make a case, which unlike in this opening presentation about who mike pence is, what hes about, what he well but at pence shows that he is not donald trump. You dont have a yes man. You have someone that has their own opinion. And they may disagree and that might be good for the ticket. That could be good for the ticket having someone who is a balance for trump. When you look at mike pences history. When hes been in controversial moments or situations he tends to choke. When he has the antilgbt rights bill he got a lot of pushback from the Business Community so he eventually changed the law. Meanwhile that angered conservative christians who felt you didnt stick up for us. He has some history of that not being able to withstand the really high takes pressure.
