An airport encounter this week between attorney general Loretta Lynch and former president bill clinton has ignited a political firestorm. Republicans say it compromised the justice departments investigation into Hillary Clinton. Donald trump is calling it, quote, so terrible, one of the big stories of the year. The meeting occurred when the attorney general and the former president were parked on a tarmac at Phoenix Sky Harbor International airport after visiting arizona for separate events. Both former president clinton and lynch say the meeting was social. Our conversation was a great deal about his grandchildren. It was primarily social and about our travels. He mentioned the golf he played in phoenix and he mentioned travels hed had but there was no discussion of any matter pending before the department or any matter pending before any other body. There was no discussion of benghazi, no discussion of the state Department Emails by way of example. President obama rejected questions on the issue during a bill signing yesterday. His former adviser David Axelrod tweeted, i take lynch and clinton at their word that their conversation in phoenix did not touch on probe, but foolish to create such optics. Judicial watch, the group that has sued for the release of clintons private emails is now calling for an Inspector General investigation into the Lynch Clinton meeting. The veepstakes are getting real. With just three weeks until the Republican National convention, former House SpeakerNewt Gingrichs name has just been added to the list of confirmed candidates being vetted by the trump team. Gingrich joins new jersey governor chris christie, who is also on the short list. Trump discussed christie with conservative radio host howie carr saying im certainly looking at him and i always will. Whether its for that or something else. Trump also mentioned indiana governor mike pence. His office, though, denies any communication with the Trump Campaign on the issue. But the inclusion of gingrich is significant. Because the vp pick could be crucial to easing republicans concerns regarding trumps nomination. Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders is now responding to trumps accusation that sanders outright hates Hillary Clinton. The answer is of course, you know, trump is lying, as he always does. No, i do not hate secretary clinton. Ive known her for 25 years. I have a lot of respect for her. Weve worked together. We have disagreements on issues. But to say that i hate her is absolutely untrue. Sanders also responded to nprs recent interview with joe biden and after that biden said sanders would back clinton saying, quote, ive talked to bernie. Bernies going to endorse her. This is going to work. As we speak, we are working with the Clinton Campaign trying to be able to come forward and say to my supporters out there, you know what, heres the progress we have made. I hear what secretary clinton is saying on this issue and that issue that means a whole lot to you. So i hope that we can reach that goal. We are not there at this moment. Sanders comments were on the same day his team solicited donations to send his 1900 delegates to the Democratic Convention to, quote, sepd a message to the establishment. This comes as sanders supporters filed a lawsuit against the dnc and its chair Debbie Wasserman schultz alleging the democratic primary was rigged for Hillary Clinton. And did work, too. Actually used the fire truck ladder. Probably safer. The forecast today and through the holiday weekend, flash flooding is a concern. This boundary is going to sit from colorado to the east. But as this cold front tries to plow into areas that are going to get more humid and warm today were going to see some severe weather. Late afternoon into the early evening, areas from richmond, d. C. To reading, new york included, the whole hudson valley, chance for some definitely wind damage and maybe even a little bit of tornado action, too. So weve got to be careful with that. Theres some great weather in the great lakes today. Florida storms will be a problem as we go throughout the afternoon. Thats very typical for this time of year. Then as we go through the holiday weekend, the heaviest rains, this is where the flash flooding is possible from colorado to kansas through missouri. Notice its the same areas on sunday, especially around kansas city. You could get five, six inches of rain over the next three to four days. Then by the time we get to the fourth of july itself, that whole mess begins to move a little further to the east. Im not saying its going to be a complete washout but theres a potential for at least some periods of heavy rain, st. Louis, indianapolis, lexington, louisville, as we head through much of west virginia, and then through washington, d. C. And richmond, again, not a complete washout. Dont cancel your plans but youre going to have to keep a close eye on the forecast as we get towards firework time. Thank you, bill. And transgender recruits will be accepted by the military services. What it means is that transgender troops can serve openly, they dont have to live in fear. They dont have to lie about who they are. I feel very betrayed. Reporter sage fox first served in the army as a male infantry soldier. But years later, after sage was recruited into the Army Reserves as a transgender woman, she was quickly pushed out and put on inactive status. Its fear, its ignorance, its bigotry, its misinformation. Reporter lifting the current ban will not come fast or easy. The military Services Must come up with plans to provide psychological counseling and medical services for transgender forces. Including hormone treatments. It could take a year before the plan is fully implemented. But as far sage fox, shes elated. And looking forward to returning to active duty. Jim miklaszewski, nbc news, the pentagon. Late last night a federal judge blocked mississippis religious objection law. It would have let merchants and Government Employees deny or delay services to samesex couples by citing their religious beliefs. State attorneys are objected to repeal. Mississippi is one of 20 states to pass religious objections bills since the Supreme Court legalized samesex marriage last year. The Obama Administration yesterday asked a federal court to delay the release of 14,000 pages of emails from aides to former secretary of state Hillary Clinton until at least october, 2018. In a court filing administration lawyers said the state department miscalculated the amount of material it would need to process the documents. The emails were originally due out on july 21st. Donald trump says those who previously signed the rnc pledge to support the eventual republican nominee should come forward and endorse, or never run for office again. In my opinion, they should never be allowed to run for Public Office again, because what they did is disgraceful. Trump also bashed the rest of the gop, telling talk radio it feels as if hes running against two parties. Its almost, in some ways, like im running against two parties. No kidding. Im not sure it matters because i think were going to win. The people are so fed up with politics and politicians. But i think im going to win. Either way. New battleground polls were released yesterday showing Hillary Clinton with large leads in some key states. Clinton is up double digits in florida and North Carolina against trump. Double digits in wisconsin, and michigan. And up nine points in pennsylvania. All massive increases from what president obama did in 2012. The good news for trump, hes running dead even with clinton in ohio, nevada, and new hampshi hampshire. While still on top in arizona. But there may be a spoiler coming. Lib tearian gary johnson is also polling at double digits in at least four battleground states in that same poll. And that is your mrng dish of scrambled politics. All right 22 minutes past the hour on this friday morning in washington im joined by politico reporter daniel lipman. Good morning. Good morning, happy july 4th. Yeah, its coming up real soon. Donald trump says he feels like hes running against two parties, including his own. Is he right . You know, i think a lot of republicans feel a lot of less pressure to actually support trump since theyre all trying to kind of save their own skin so theyre not super worried about helping trump. And in terms of the two parties, i saw that this week in aspen, colorado, at the ideas festival, where, you know, mega gop donor paul singer was saying how trump did his antitrade policies, it could lead to a global depression. And so depression, and politicians name in the same sentence, thats never good for, you know, a candidacy going forward. I want to switch geers now, and talk about this airport meeting. How significant is that meeting between attorney general Loretta Lynch and former president bill clinton . Will it jeopardize a probe into Hillary Clintons emails . I dont think it will jeopardize it. Its just a bad news cycle for hillary. It seems to show that the clintons feel like theyre above the law where they feel like they can kind of get away with things that ordinary people, you know, cant get away with. You know, donald trump was under investigation, and his spouse met with a top Law Enforcement official, just imagine how much, you know, grief that he would be getting for, you know, being you know, kind of doing the same thing that bill clinton did. So its just not a good message to send to, you know, prosecutors, and just the general public because it just sends a bad signal to people, you know, watching this case. Well trump is not brushing it aside. In fact he is calling it a big deal. But both of them say it was purely social. Are they smart enough to have known they should have been smart enough to have known that the optics could spark a bit of a firestorm, right . Are you surprised by this . At least they shouldnt have let it leak out. Thats the worst part of it, i think, for bill clinton. And it kind of makes it seem like, you know, politics at this level is kind of like georgetown cocktail party, and where everyone knows each other and everyones pretty clubby and thats just not good for Loretta Lynch or bill clinton.
