What is the latest there. It has been 24 hours since the horrific scene unfolded here in orlando. And you can see Law Enforcement behind me continuing to process this crime scene as more of the victims are being identified. Right now, 21 of the 50 People Killed have been identified. They range in age from 20 to 50, both men and women. This comes as were beginning to paint a portrait of this gunman, who he was, omar mateen, 29 years old, an excoworker says this is a man who was unhinged, who would often make derogatory remarks about peoples age or religion, rather, and Sexual Orientation, and he the excoworker said he also did not respect women, thats being backed up by his exwife who says she was actually abused during her fourmonth marriage to him. Take a listen. But then a few months after we were married, i saw his instability, and i saw he was bipolar and he would get mad out of nowhere. Thats when i started worrying about my safety and then after a few months he started abusing me physically. He was mentally unstable and mentally ill. Thats the only explanation i could give and he was obviously disturbed. Mateen was an employee of g4s security, a private security company. He had been with them for nine years. During that time, they say he did pass two background checks. Now, while he passed the background checks, the fbi is saying that mateen was a subject of their investigation, twice, but they did clear him on any potential charges to terrorism in 2013 and 2014. Betty . All right, blake, thank you so much for that report. We are starting to learn more about the victims. The city of orlando is posting online the names of those identified and whose next of kin had been contacted. 21 of the victims have officially been confirmed. One is 30yearold eddie justice. Thats at 2 06. Trapped in the bathroom. Downtown. Please call police. Im going to die. Call them, mama, now. Im telling im in the bathroom. Hes coming. Im going to die. Just heart breaking there. In addition to those killed, 53 are still recovering from their injuries, many in serious condition. Sarah dallof is outside of orlando regional medical. What is the latest on the injured . Good morning, betty. This hospital is just blocks from the nightclub where the shooting took place. And it was one of the first hospitals to receive patients and has become one of the first places that friends and family have gone to try to get information about friends and relatives, they have not yet been able to contact. A hot line has been set up for those family members to call in hopes of getting an update or tracking down their loved ones. Unfortunately, as some of them come here, theyre leaving with news that is the absolute worst, the news they have been dreading. Andrew allman, he lost five friends in the massacre. They were beautiful people. And they didnt deserve that. At all. And i pray that when they go to heaven that they see everybody that cares for them. And medical personnel have cautioned that there may be more added to the death toll, given the serious nature of some of the injuries. Police have also asked people to hold off on vigils or any public displays of mourning and gathering right now, saying their personnel is stretched so thin at this point. They dont have the additional people to send to those to police them. Back to you. Seeing the names and faces there, the victims brings it home. Sarah, thank you very much for that. We have much more ahead on this special edition of first look including an outpouring of support for the Lgbt Community. Place where they were attacked is more than a nightclub it a place of solidarity and empowerment where people have come together to raise awareness, to speak their minds and to advocate for their civil rights. So in is a sobering reminder that attacks on any american, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or Sexual Orientation is an attack on all of us. Sang the National Anthem on the steps of the u. S. Capitol as a tribute to the orlando victims. Look at this beautiful sunrise over the Washington Monument there in d. C. As well. Just shows you that the sun still shines and life will go on despite what we have seen and witnessed. Just one of many tributes held as the Lgbt Community stood together in the face of what president obama called an act of hate, men and women rallying in front of the Historic Stone wall inn. Others attended rallies and vigils across the country from gay pride parades to the gates of the white house and the streets of chicago, all in solidarity with those killed. Im joined by brooke sapelsa and jonathan lovits, who has been to the pulse nightclub a number of times. Let me start with that. Help us understand the landscape and how so many were not able to escape. It is such a large room, and it is subdivided into so many Different Party spaces within it and there is such loud music and so many different lights. And, you know, the chaos inside must have been so terrifying because you dont know which end is up. It is a stand alone building. You may not be sure which is the exit when youre in there, it is not part of a larger structure. And we heard so many different tales of people helping each other try to escape or unfortunately losing their lives while in some very frantic and terrifying moments contacting their loved ones. It was just a room of sheer panic, but also, you know, a place we cant let this happen other places and cant lose our safe spaces, just because this happened in one gay bar. It is important we recommend this was a hate crime on a gay bar. That we dont know fear going to all of them around the country. Well, brooke, you were at the stone wall inn, a historic and monumental place and that sentiment was echoed there as well. It was echoed there. There was an outpouring of support for the victims in orlando. There was also an outpouring of support for the community. There was the sentiment was we cannot be silent. We need to this month is pride month. We need to celebrate louder and prouder. There is also a lot of anger at stone wall. People were angry at not just the shoot, but also politicians and antilgbt religious leaders who have spewed antigay rhetoric, so there was a mix of very raw emotion in front of stone wall. Jonathan, how is the Community Coming together . You talk a little bit about how moving forward, how it is important to unite and not let this bring the community down. But that there are going to be lasting effects, emotionally. How damaging can this be . It can be quite damaging. This is going this will scare people. There are young lgbt people across the country thinking, you know, just as we should be celebrating the oneyear mark of marriage equality, we have taken a huge step backwards. Look at the pride parade across the country happening this week and going it happen throughout the rest of the month. We have never been more resolved were not going to take this line down, we may be knocked down, but we are getting up and getting stronger than ever. This is also this transcends communities. This happened to be latin night at the pulse nightclub and when the shooting happened. When the shooting happened. Remember that when youre harming the Lgbt Community, youre harming all communities. There are women, people of color, people with disabilities, there are every conceivable type of person is also part of the Lgbt Community. So an attack on any one part of us is an attack on all of us. We all have skin in the game, making sure our spaces are safe and kids are protecting our community and never forgets. But we also keep giving and keep moving forward. Ive seen such an incredible outpouring of support from community groups, especially in central florida, they all converge on the Lgbt Community, yesterday offering crisis counselling to start an incredible go fund me page, way past the initial mark to help the victims and their families. This community wont stop. And were seeing the allied Community Stand up and say well help you however we can. Thats the key. How can people unify . How can they help . And, brooke, did you hear any of that when it comes to security and how people are taking this fear and turning it into some kind of empowerment . I think there has been a call for as jonathan said, were not going to take this lying down, we cant be silent, we need to go to lgbt spaces, participate in pride events. One thing that jonathan touched upon, the importance of gay spaces. Those have been safe havens for the community. Especially an attack like this, in a gay nightclub, feels like such an invasion, someone came na our space, our safe haven, and committed this absolutely awful crime. And there is a long history of attacks on lgbt clubs and on nbc out we have a post that was written, detailing some of the really just horrific attacks on our spaces. So there is a lot, as i said before, a lot of raw emotion. Which is understandable, it is so very real and people are looking for loved ones as we speak now, which is just heart breaking to think about. Thank you, both, for spending a little time with us this morning, we appreciate it. The orlando terror attack has caused a major shift across the political spectrum.
