Wellwishers may be headed, with one or two exceptions, to the spin room as new york city mayor bill de blasio is working the refs after the game. Nicolle wallace, i think a boisterous discussion got through tonight despite some signal interruptions and some audio problems, which we obviously apologize for. Yeah, listen, off to the races, right . And i think that this field showed themselves when they broke into spanish, when they debated the intricacies of policy, when they kept it on what they were for and didnt end up down the rabbit hole of what they were against. When jay inslee had that sharp answer with the greatest threat to the country and the world was and came out with donald trump. I mean, together as a field, they strung together an incredible story about what is possible if donald trump isnt reelected to a second term and really, its up to democrats in terms of who spoke for what theyre hungering for the most. Probably claire can answer that bert than me. Senator, someone who has been in the arena of the u. S. Senate, i noticed the copious notes you were taking. Yeah, i think overall i was surprised how little there was a discussion of the mess in the white house right now. I was shocked that more candidates didnt tie their policies into the ineptitude, the chaos. It was surprising to me. I think most democrats, while they want to hear policy and they want to get to knows these candidates, they also want to be reassured that we are united, those candidates are united in terms of donald trump. That surprised me a little. I thought the folks on the end did their best to elbow in to every discussion they could. I found it mildly irritating at times. Yes. Maybe its just de blasios mildly irritating to me, im not sure. Yeah. Or maybe more than mildly irritating to me. You seem pretty irritated. I had the same reaction. I think it might break down along he sounded to me like an obnoxious guy at a restaurant or bar talking on his cell phone like everyone wanted to hear what hes saying. I wanted to hear other peoples answers and he kept butting in. That was the tactic, butting in. The absence of trump in this discussion actually surprised me a lot. Almost he who will not be mentioneds. It was like valdemort, you couldnt say his name. For many people in the country that is the main issue. I thought maybe looking at the individual candidates, you know, cory booker has a presence and a voice and i thought he did himself some good potentially. Beto orourke i thought did not have a good evening. His answers to me were mushy, and it was hard to grasp anything in them. Julian castro was very strong on the details of immigration policy. Prodded the others to be more specific. But i think Elizabeth Warren will be happy at the end of the space. She got a lot of attention, especially during the first hour. I thought i mean, look, shes the clear leader among this ten, and i didnt really think a glove was laid on her by the others. Elizabeth warren actually had some long stretches of silence during the immigration debate. And it wasnt her choice. Its just that it went on without her and moderators were handing it to other people. And also during the Climate Change debate, two of the most important things, i dont think she had almost any opportunity in there. One of the things that drives the observation that they didnt talk about donald trump very much is that most, if not all of those candidates, would be running for president tonight if someone else was the republican president. If we had a republican president bush. And so these are actual actually positive candidacies that would be running no matter who was in the white house, no matter what republican was in the white house, but it does seem like there was some kind of conscious decision made to basically try to advance their candidacies as much as they could without the use of the word trump. And heres why that might be a kind of good experience for democratic primary voters. They actually got a couple of hours of concentrating on what government and the white house and the presidency would sound like after trump. And after trump, they will not be talking about donald trump. Nicolle wallace, as someone who has worked in politics, i ask you this. I noticed about midway through the evening there is a way of answering questions that is anecdotal, and that man right there, beto orourke, in all the answers i heard, started with an anecdote. It can hamstring you into following that style and it can sometimes allow you to seem less than sincere if you are preloaded with the name of the 27yearold man you metta long the r met along the rio grand and so on. In talking with him, he is genuine, how he organizes policy conversations, theyre organized around conversations hes had on the campaign trail. At this point with 20, what, five people running, i think its like a poopoo platter. It might not have been for anyone. It might not have sung for gene. No one is voting for many, many, many moons. These guys are going to rise and fall, not necessarily based on what people liked and didnt like about how they answered questions tonight, but on the miles that they log on their commercial flights at this point. No one is flying private except donald trump, and were paying for that plane. This is we talked about this earlier. This is the beginning of a story that they begin to tell. I mean, just as an observer to this partys process, i thought that senator klobuchar stood out. She was distinct from a policy perspective. Her answers were not the same as the ones that the others gave. And i thought her style was very folksy. Again, if youre looking for someone who donald trump, part of the reason the republicans went for him, he talked like they d. He wasnt elite. Amy klobuchar seemed intellectually accessible, and had well thought out, well formed policies that didnt sound like anybody else. Beto orourke had one distinction tonight. He was the only one that was a target. Yeah, why was he a target . Julian castro went right after him on one issue, and it seemed like the only strategic decision that i felt i could see in this tonight was that Julian Castro was going after whatever the beto orourke vote is, and whatever that following is. This was texas versus texas, and he went straight at beto orourke. Chris mathews, id like to begin with you by asking you about congressman ryan of ohio. For people who make a living watching politics, hes been an interesting case because he challenged, later thought better of it, nancy pelosi for the speakership. But also tonight, he echoed talking points i have heard from you, talking about pennsylvan pennsylvanians and ryan from the similar state of ohio talking about the language of actual people and not the elitism that he labelled he used to label the Democratic Party. Well, it was a strong suit for him, brian. He was talking about the kind of people in ohio and across the industrial midwest who voted for donald trump with their sense of cultural alienation, the sense theyre overlooked, discarded by a party that seemed to celebrate itself as a Coastal Party of highly educated people. He said ivy leaguers. I think he was talking about a broader sense than that, of people that thought they were much better than the people they say they want to represent. I think he caught it and no one else did. I thought that was right. I think the winner tonight, though, was probably joe biden because to quote sherlock holmes, the dog wasnt barking tonight. No one took on the Democratic Front runner the whole two hours, and i think thats a big surprise. Anybody would have expected that. Senator warren was populist, she never changed her tone regardless of the question. She talked about big power and economics and how she was going to break it up. She was the Teddy Roosevelt candidate tonight and 7 or 8 answers, regardless of the question, she talked about we have to bring down the bigshots and open up American Business to the little people. I thought it was powerful stuff. Everyone else had a good line. Gabbard was the only one that talked about the neo cons and john boltons and people like that and pompeo taking us into another war perhaps. I thought Julian Castro spoke from his heart. As the only latino up there, he was powerful and talking about the biggest news story of the day which is that father and daughter lying dead in the rio grande. I thought booker was good, but he was sort of just one note, monochromatic. Kept talking one way with one expression. He didnt get a chance to show his rich personality. I thought de blasio was surprisingly a heavy weight tonight. I think he entered into the National Debate coming from new york city and joining right in with the National Debate about war and peace and the big issues. I was really impressed with de blasio tonight. To lawrence odonnell, maybe you want to take a round house swing at this. For viewers watching tonight, for whom some of these candidates are new faces and new names, explain the candidacy of one Tulsi Gabbard of hawaii, army vet, a major in the Army National guard, a member of congress. What should we know about Tulsi Gabbard . I must say she used her military experience really well on the stage, and very, very effectively. And shes one of the people, like bill de blasio, who basically was telling america for the very first time tonight that shes running for president. I mean, lets just face it. No most people had no idea who was she before the beginning of the debate. That may be true of many on the stage. She had the same job de blasio had. De blasio seized the microphone to let people know hes running for president. She hung in there very solidly all wait through the debate on every issue that came her way. What about the rumors about her ties to or sympathies toward putin or russia . She went to meet with assad. Conspiracy theory, is it reporting, is there investigative reporting . What is her, what is her baggage, her political baggage . That is thats one of the things people talk about and its a difficult issue for her. She has said that the reason she talked to assad is that this is a very important region in the world and she was trying to see, you know, what might be possible there. Her best line of defense on that is to hearken back to when barack obama said hed be willing to talk to iran. Hed be willing to talk to north korea without possible preconditions. And theres always that to now trumps position. Yeah. So there is always that tension of talking to the evil doer in the world. Thats going to follow her around. That is not a muted issue yet. Steve kornacki over at the board with some observations on tonight for us. Steve . Yeah, i thought there was a very interesting moment early on in this debate. It was the moment that involved the two texas candidates, Julian Castro and beto orourke. And i did wonder, the thought occurred to me watching that if its almost a two ships passing in the night moment that we experienced there. You think back to the start of this campaign, beto orourke came in with massive expectations. He was in double digits in the initial polling. This is a Senate Candidate last year who captured national attention, who captured attention thats normally reserved for president ial candidates, who raised money last year that you normally only see president ial candidates run a was. So he came in with immense expectations, and weve seen him over the last few months only decline in polling so he came in tonight really needing to prove something. And i mention castro in the same breath and exchange in the same breath. Castro was the candidate who tip identifies the candidate who has been lost in the shuffle in the race. Hasnt been talked about that much. He was a keynote speaker for the democratic convention. He told orourke he didnt know what he was talking about, he didnt know what he was talking about. Down to the room. I thought it was important that you and Tulsi Gabbard, the congresswoman from hawaii, were very good at bringing up the issue of war and peace because that has been a concern of most of my friends on the progressive front ever since we got into that stupid war in iraq. And, chris, we havent learned our lesson. Ten minutes away from war with iran, ten minutes away, and i wanted people to understand, for me its very personal, for so Many Americans. Look, i watched my dad suffer from the battle of okinawa for decades thereafter. And the whole family was affected, and our family ended up broken up and he ended upped taking his own life. That was the good war. That was the good war. But he didnt get the support he needed even with all the good we gave to our world war ii vets. You know whats happened to the young people coming back from iraq and afghanistan. So how do we not learn the lesson in and after vietnam we said lower powers, well let congress decide. But donald trump is ten minutes away from making the decision. Lets talk about your party then well get to the other ploe gress progressive issues. John biden supported the iraq war. Hillary clinton. Why did the best and brightest support a stupid war . Theyre all democrats. I think its the same problem you start to see on the stage with other issues. Democrats afraid to be democrats. Being afraid to be progressives, afraid to say yeah, were different. We are not the party of war. We are perfectly clear about National Security. We will protect our people, but that doesnt mean getting into every war that comes along ask being reckless about it. I feel like democrats for decades have been ashamed to be democrats too often and have been scared of our own shadows. I think tonight is an opportunity for us to figure out who we are and this whole campaign, i say lets get back to our roots. Were supposed to be the party of working people. Lets bring it home to work. You represent the worlds great Financial Capital wall street. How do you take on wall street . Senator warren talked about it tonight. She was challenged i guess from other people. Whats a progressive going to do to fix our system where the 1 make it all . Repeal the trump tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. Raise that tax rate up to the Dwight Eisenhower levels, 70 or more. That was when this country was actually working in so many more ways and there was some kind of shared prosperity and real regulation of wall street. Dont water down doddfrank, make it tense, make it stronger. How do you win a race like that when trump has the till out there for billions of dollars in advertising next year to make his case to protect him and his point of view and interest from people like you and senator warren . Theyre going to spend every time they can to stop you guys. I believe youre absolutely right, but theres no question we have a working majority in america if we can excite it. Think about who stayed home in are you really in this race . Yes, sir. I thought tonight for the first time, im being blind. I thought you were in this fight for real, not one of the guys at the end of the row. Are you going to get to the center . When are you going to get to the center of this sfiet . Chris, i start as an under dog for new york city and i worked my way to that center and one day i was the head. Thats what i have to do here. Ive done it myself. I believe in you tonight. I think you got in the fight. Thank you. Stay in it. Good luck. Thank you. The mayor of new york, bill de blasio. Thank you. Thank you, chris. Thank you, brian. Well take it back here. I know youre about to interview senator klobuchar. Nicolle, to a lot of people, the only problem with a de blasio candidacy is a close look at his constituency here in new york. Yeah, he may have built a constituency tonight. My performance notes were more i was more attracted to when klobuchar jumped in and said there are three women on the stage that have done more to protect womens Reproductive Health care than any man. But these are this is so personal. There isnt a single objective analysis. And the poopoo platter means there is something for everyone. Were talking about their performances. Its so deeply personal. The good news, i think everyone had a moment and everyone in some way was running against their own baseline from which they started. So i think everyone can probably say they grew from where they were. I think some people wont like betos style. I thought he told good stories. If you like that, if you go to his events, thats probably why you go. So its really hard to sort of offer one objective analysis of who sang and who flopped. Claire tonight was brutal to de blasio. I thought it was exciting. Is it a new york thing, claire, do you have to be from new york to like bill de blasio . They dont like him at all. Thats the problem. Have you left this building . They vote for him. I talk to a lot of cab drivers and uber drivers. They are not fans. Those are my focus group, who is driving the cab and uber driver about a city im in. Lets get back to the fact not only did they not take on trump, none of them took on the top three. None of them took on Elizabeth Warren, none of them took on joe biden and none of them took on bernie sanders. That gets back to the point were going to get to. Senator klobuchar has been seated next to chris. Chris . Not yet. Were very close. She had a great night. She did have a great night. I want to hear what she underscores. I think in presentation and just being someone different, i think she had something unique to say. Lawrence, i really wish youd been along with me for my walk home in new york city. We wouldnt be having this conversation. [ laughter ] chris does have a point, though. You know, it was an obvious tactic of de blasios. It was pushy and it was but he did he got noticed. The question is did he teach someone in tomorrow nights debate to steal that maneuver, the jump in from the corner . Are we going to see that tomorrow night and who is it going to be . Who is going to speak in spanish . Okay, now im told the senator from minnesota is with the anchorman from pennsylvania. Thank you so much. You know what i was struck tonight by the people with their true backgrounds and true identities as human beings showed the best passion. And its always dangerous for men to be talking about reproductive rights since were sort of a different role there. But when you jumped into that, i think the audience went wild for you. Thats what i call spontaneity. I listen to so many of the candidates keep saying im the only one on the stage, im the only one on the stage. And when the governor, you know, i love the work hes doing on Climate Change. But when he comes out and says im the only one on the stage thats led on reproductive rights, i literally looked at the two other women on the stage, at elizabeth and tulsi, and thats when i said, there are three women on this stage that have done something on this, too. What did you think of the proportion of questions and discussion tz . Theres a lot on the border, a lot on health care, very little on Foreign Policy. Very little on womens rights and womens reproductive rights. The way i looked at it, when youre standing up there and there are so many people, you just want to jump into everything. I would love to talk about election issues and russia, the farm economy. But i had to sit back and say this is the first debate. Theres going to be many more debates. Were going to have opportunities to talk about other issues, and it it was very important to talk about immigration. I was at a homestead today and i saw firsthand whats going on there and enough is enough. This donald trump immigration policy and it was important to talk about the health care issue, of course. And there are some differences on the stage on that. Lets talk about the reproductive issue because somebody said tonight they want to codify roe v. Wade. I thought the Supreme Court is the law of the land, it is the constitution. It is. I think the horrific laws of georgia and alabama that says a doctor thats to go to prison, i think it will be thrown out as unconstitutional. What if the Supreme Court does throw it out . The idea is if you trust roberts not to do it . You trust roberts not to do it . Im not going to say what hell do. I just hope they do the right thing. The law is clear. It would be a travesty. Let me ask you well, thats a good question. Let me ask you god, ive run out of questions here. Thats impossible. Let me talk about health care. The issue raised tonight, should we outlaw or ban private insurance . Where are you on that again . I am one that thinks we need universal health care. We need to bring down premiums and we need to do something about pharmaceuticals immediately. So my view is you start with this public option, which is something barack obama wanted to do to build on the Affordable Care act. You can do it with medicare. You can do it with so its an option . It is an option. Why do other people want to why does bernie want to outlaw Health Insurance . He is simply looking at what do we do about a Health Care System thats way too expensive. My problem with it as i said today is that in the long haul, its something you can look at and thats why it started with the public option. The bill itself says you kick people off insurance in four years. Youre an attorney, youve been a prosecutor. Do you think its constitutional to tell the American People they cant buy Health Insurance . You really think it sounds kons tugal . He constitutional . What unites us is much bigger than what divides us. Trump is in texas trying to throw out the Affordable Care act including the protections, protection from not being kicked off your insurance for preexisting conditions. Can you get rid of Mitch Mcconnell . As longs as hes there none of this is going to happen. We have a big opportunity to win the u. S. Senate. We talked about that today. That is the number one goal. Thats my argument for me leading this ticket. Im someone, every time i lead our ticket in minnesota, we win big. I have won in the red est of districts, including ones that trump won by over 20 points because its not just enough to win the presidency. This has to be a National Mandate to do something about Climate Change. Do something about immigration reform, health care and all the issues we talked about today. But to do it we have to win. Senator amy klobuchar, thank you for coming over to the spin room. Thank you. Back to you, brian. And, nicolle, a couple of things. Chriss first point about no one laying a glove on biden tonight is, a, true. And b, it makes 80 of the advance press coverage of tonight wrong. All of us on our various broadcasts had guests for days who have been saying, you dont want to be joe biden. Hes going to be the invisible p pinata. It didnt happen. When klobuchar said winning back the senate is a priority for the democrats, a lot of democrats heads just exploded because they see the opposite in reality. They see a ton of attractive candidates across this country, many of whom lost there last timeout not being used in an attempt to win the senate. I think whats become clear 2 1 2 years in is that Donald Trumps most danger two most dangerous allies are bill barr, attorney general, and Mitch Mcconnell who makes into policy everything that Donald Trump Tweets with his little thumbs. So i think that its a bigger problem, right, than what donald trump says and does. He has enablers in congress. I think there is sort of this idea that senators and obviously democrats elect more senators or nominate more senators. But i think that the senators are showing themselves as very well suited for sort of addressing some of these structural problems we have. While i understand we have a former senator sitting with us, Chris Mathews has now been joined by congresswoman gabbard. Tulsi gabbard of hawaii. Aloha. First, how far are you into the race . Are you going to run for reelection . Im focused on running for president because i think there are serious changes. As i pointed out in this debate tonight, that need to be made to our Foreign Policy which is connected to every single domestic issue that we face. Why were you the lone voice going after the neo cons, going after the people that took us into these wars . Youre the only one out there. Thats a great person i hope you ask every Single Person you interview. I can tell you this comes from a deeply personal place as you know. I deployed to iraq in 2005 during the height of that war. I served in the medical unit. For every single day, i saw that terrible high human cost of the war and in congress serving over six years on the foreign affairs, armed services, Homeland Security committees. I know the importance of National Security and i know that with that experience and the conviction not to bend to the whims of the military Industrial Complex of the Foreign Policy establishment, im ready to do that job of commander in chief on day one. Does it bother you that joe biden, who is the front runner in the democratic fight right now, voted for the iraq war . It was the wrong vote. It was the wrong vote. People like myself, americans across this country who enlisted by those terrorist attacks on 9 11, we joined the military to go after those who attacked us. We were lied to, we were presented a false evidence by those who believed it without asking the tough questions. Im not going to allow any other Service Member to go through that, to go into war into these false pretenses or this lack of actually examining the evidence thats there. Would you like to see the democratic platform next summer . Because platforms do matter. Say no more policy of regime change anywhere in the world, no more of that . Absolutely. And i think this is something thats important for folks to recognize, is so often these regime change wars are waged under the guise of humanitarianism. We need to go help the people in these countries. But in fact what happens every single time is people end up with more suffering, more death, more destruction. Congressman, im so glad somebody waved the banner for reasonableness in Foreign Policy. Thank you, chris. Thank you. Good luck in the future. Lets go back to brian and nicolle. Chris, thank you. Senator i know, i know. Its supposed to be claire. Once a senator, always a senator. Im called claire at home. There is a charge on the floor, and a lot of it is on lets be honest democrats on twitter. Say in effect, if this is the year the democrats care about winning back the senate, id hate to see the year when they dont care about winning back the senate. Everyone can name six highly capable candidates everyone in the politics business. What say you about your party . Well, i think there certainly are some candidates running for president that would be great Senate Candidates in their states. And we know who they are. We saw one tonight. We saw two tonight. Former mayor of san antonio and beto. Well see a couple tomorrow night. John hickenlooper from colorado, and well also we wont see steve bullock. But hes up there. There are really good candidates out there. On the other hand, remember how we won the house . We didnt win the house with candidates in these swing districts that had been in washington or that had been in politics. Right. We won these seats by putting candidates up that had strong personal stories, that could legitimately hold the title as outsider. And ive said this several times tonight, and i know i sound like a broken record. The outsider insider dynamic is big. And having candidates in these states as long as we can fund them, as long as people Pay Attention and give those 10 contributions, not just to the candidate tonight they like, but the candidate running in iowa and colorado and North Carolina and arizona, we can we could win the senate. And that, i think, is maybe a smarter way to go about this than the big name candidates, the people think we lost. Its harder to run statewide in a senate race as an outsider than a house race . I disagree. I think being an outsider is a very powerful thing. Ask donald trump. I have to vote for cloture here and go to Chris Mathews with cory booker. Im so lucky to have senator cory here, senator booker. I want to tell you, i was watching tonight. I thought it was very strong. Ill give my referees judgment. Yes, yes. These dee bates are so intense and theyre so driven by really passionate issues. Yes. Its hard to introduce your person. Yeah. Did you feel that it was just every question was about School Shootings or somebody dying at the border in the rio grande . Horror. Tonight was really fraught with this horrible stuff. We hit on guns, immigration, even issues of economy are hurting. With this big of a field, i dont think you got to know the candidates as much as we will on future debate stages. I think theyre going to whittle down especially with the high need for individual contributions in future debates. I felt very strong. I felt i was able to make my points, make my case and introduce a lot of americans who, unlike some of the other people in this race who have 90, 100 name recognition, were down about 50 . This is a good opportunity. I think you spoke for cities, newark, where i grew up in. The attitude of people who have guns that live in row houses, we dont need them in the neighborhoods. You talked about registration, you also talked i thought very evocatively, talked about people shooting to kill at night. Newark is where i lived for 20 years. The 4th of july, parents telling you when kids hear fireworks, they show traumatic stress. They hide under beds or in closets or have anxiety attacks. This is the kind of stuff Many Americans know every single day were in. Now that fear is spreading with these mass shootings. Thats why i think were going to win this battle and we shouldnt have low ambitions when it comes to this. We can solve this problem and not take away a person right to own a gun. The only people that should be afraid, should be the corporate lobby, gun runners and criminals who too easily get their hands on guns. When people went to their bilingualism, im impressed. Im terrible with languages. Your expression when beto went to spanish. He threw down the gauntlet and i had to respond. There are a number of bilingual people. What the heck is going on here . I just think its inside. Sths going to progress now. I was listening to him, okay, fine. Its good that hes showing that. Should we have a bakeoff, spanish literacy . You know, im happy. My spanish is i am nowhere near fluent, but conversational. We need to do more. The gun owners, members of the Second Community heard you. When you said registration, when you have to drive a car when youre 16, you have so get a drivers license, training, a junior driver, cant drive at night. You say we need Something Like that on guns. We absolutely do. The states that have done it have seen dramatic drops in gun violence. Is it constitutional to require that stuff . Absolutely. The Supreme Court has spoken on this numerous times. There are reasonable restrictions because there are no absolute rights. We dont have the absolute right to free speech. I cant stand up in a Movie Theater and scream fire. Weve seen fire too much. We need reasonable gun safety provisions that are common sense. The majority of america agrees with me on this. Ive been looking at your numbers. Youre down in the single digits. There are five candidates who have broken into the upper tier. Did you break up tonight . Did you punch up enough . The more americans that get a chance to see me, the better our polling seems to do. Im happy with our rising in the primary states where more people are hearing me. You know this, we have 215, 220 days left in this election before we even get to iowa. Were going to have a lot of time to make our case. You know also from past campaigns, people were leading in the polls this far out dont normally become our nominee. Is the reason nobody attacked biden tonight because they all want to be his running mate . Thats not the reason youre being a little facetious about it. I dont think he is the focus. The American People are the focus. Youd accept that role, wouldnt you take it . I would accept joe biden being my vicepresident . I wouldnt even expect come on, too cute. Ill tell you this. I would not accept it if a male offered me because we should have a female vicepresident , clear i think the power and the diversity and the incredible nature of the people we have out there no more allwhite tickets . I agree with that. Im asking you. I believe in it. There should be diversity. New york state stick et im being called. Brian, back to you. Made it sound like it was me. I was called by the control room to scurry to a break. Heres the lead in politico. Elizabeth war not had her moments to shine. Beto orourke spoke spanish out of nowhere then sparred with Julian Castro. Amy klobuchar got applause for one of the biggest opening lines. A quick break for us. Well go back down to chris. Other of the candidates are lining up to come on the air with us. Its a new Buick Envision. And i got it with wifi for all of your wifi stuff, Wireless Charging for your phone. As a steady stream of Democratic Office holders are being taken to Chris Mathews side, we have found our job is waiting for them, and then going to them when they arrive. But two can play at that game because connected to us is donnie deutsche. If you watch morning joe, if you watch deadline white house, if you watch virtually any broadcast on this network, you know donnie deutsche. And we quoted you already, donnie. We have quoted you. You may not be thrilled with the way i did, but it was in your in context of the kind of branding work you have done for the democrats. I quoted you on nicolles broadcast saying, if its warren, theyll lose 48 states. With that as the backdrop, how did you think they did tonight . I want to work back for me the moment when the room came alive. When inslee said our biggest threat is donald trump. And that to still is what is driving voters and still was not touched tonight. The reason some people reacted positively to de blasio, because you saw another bully up there. He was kind of invindicating other peoples spaces. Cory booker had a strength. The reason people have not gone after, to this point, biden is because he is seen as the antitrump and it will backfire at this point until hes not. So to me that is the big thing, and it was not addressed tonight. This is not an issues campaign. This is who is the bully that can beat the bully . And i think interestingly enough booker showed a certain strength there. Even de blasio. I found him annoying also. He cut through. And i think that is the driver. Its not issues. Its not universal health care. Its not a womans reproductive rights as important as that is. What we have lived through all these things. We lived through iran. We have lived through korea. We lived through issues on health care. We have not lived through an assault on our democracy and an assault on our senses. That is what everybody is lensing everything through. So i dont think warren moved that ball particularly. I do think interestingly enough booker did move that ball. Donnie, just to keep your frame around this, ive got a list of who dropped trumps name the most. Youre right, warren didnt mention donald trump. Neither did de blasio based on this list. Amy klobuchar invoked donald trump nine times and tim ryan was second with seven. Do you think that an opportunity was missed to sort of indict all of the moral and legal and ethical and policy trespasses of the trump years . And if you do, why do you think they made that decision . Obviously it was a strategic choice made by some people want to hear somebody stand up and say, this is an horrific assault on who we are on every level, everything we stand for, and he needs to go and im the one to take him out. People are yearning for that. They are crying for that. You heard it even in the applause to jay inslee, on a bad night. I dont understand how people dont know that. That supersedes Everything Else 10 x. By the way, the reason amy dropped trumps name nine times is she was referencing that she had won in areas that trump had won c won. It was about her electability. She didnt go after him, none of them really did. Thats why her total was so much higher because she wanted to emphasize her electability as somebody who does well in red areas. Claire, why do you think they made the choice . We talked about genes piece yesterday which was the most powerful thing ive read. A lack of material or immediate material. I mean, you have this heart breaking situation on the border directly from the policies of this president , the deliberate policies of this president. You know, there was some passion in the immigration discussion, but it was passion disconnected from the cause of the tragedy. Donnie, dont go. Ive got to go back to Chris Mathews who has one of the people weve just been talking about, congressman ryan in ohio. Thank you so much, brian. Tim ryan, you talked in a way that the other democrats didnt tonight. You talked about working people in the not cool parts of the country, not from the coast, not from the ivy league. I thought you talked about how you can actually win an election against donald trump. Yeah, get into the industrial midwest, connect the working class people, change the brand of the party away from the coast and the ivy leagues. Thats not going to work for us against donald trump. If you want to win western p. A. And ohio, of course. If you want to win the senate bianca, your brand better be work for the working class. Why does the crowd tonight in the auditorium, if you will, how come they dont react to that . They seemed to be willing to cheer the usual progressive, you know, applause lines, but they didnt seem to be applauding the idea of, hey, we can actually beat trump if we do certain things. Thats my campaign, how do you begin to convince people, yeah, im with you on these issues, too. But if were going to connect to working class people, we cant just talk about 15 an hour jobs. Youre for, were all for. You better tack about 30, 40, 50 an hour jobs. White people voted for trump. Africanamerican voters stayed home. We have to talk about economic issues. Can you bring ohio in . Yes, sir. We can win ohio. We can win the industrial midwest. I tell you if we have a brand that surrounds ohio, youngstown, ohio, we can surround Mitch Mcconnell. They know your state and list of people like that. Were talking about whats going to decide their vote. What are they saying . Theyre saying dont overlook us, dont look down at us, dont ignore us. Come and talk to us. Amen. Go to tim ryan for america. Com, baby. Appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you. Brian . Interesting to see who gets the ad in. We will take a break. Helping you buy better. We are back. So much to talk about, and, of course, the spin room across the street from the venue where the actual debate was held, all of this to be repeated tomorrow night with even highernight, with even higher stakes, is t m teeming with anyone who has ever seen a camera, and those who have dreams of owning a camera one day, its unbelievable. Its changed since your time. I would be out of a job. This used to be the work of the staffers, and the spinners. You would get to talk to chris. They are streaming to talk to chris matthews. Another as we speak, chris. I like the sound of spin room envy. Its a wonderful feeling to hear from you. Let me go to one of the great performers tonight. Secretary castro. Thank you. Great to be with you. I will take the high road. I thought you as a latino, a mexicanamerican, was able to talk about what is in everybodys heart right now, the horror in the rio grande, exemplified in the newspaper. We see an image of that father and his young daughter. And how she was holding on to him. Her little arm around his neck. Anybody can relate to that. That has nothing to do with where people are coming from, or the color of their skin or their country. It tears your heart apart, no matter who you are. I wanted to speak to that tonight. I wanted to speak about the policies of this administration that have been horrendous that have allowed those things to happen. Two texans went to war tonight. What did beto not get right . I dont think hes done his homework. The difference between his plan and i plan is homework. The only way were going to end family separation and you can ask the Immigration Lawyers this. The only way we can end family separation, is if we repeal section 1325 of the internationality act. We used to treat this as a civil violation. That doesnt mean that people get off scottfree. Theres a court process. But that was the section of the law was he not telling the truth tonight . He was misinformed. He didnt do his homework. He was suggesting you needed to keep that law because we needed to punish people that were Drug Trafficking and human trafficking. We have laws that do that. I was happy to hear congressman ryan, senator booker, and governor inslee, have supported my position. I find it ironic, that a senator from massachusetts and a senator from new jersey and a congressman from ohio, have a better understanding of Immigration Law than youre a very liberal guy on this issue. You talk about putting people to the path of citizenship without documents. Is that immediate . I thought it sounded directly, if you are here illegally, if you dont have documents are you saying all people in that category should be given a path to citizenship . If you have not been convicted of a serious crime. If someone has committed a serious crime, we should punish that crime. I thought i heard that. Brian, back to you for a moment. Steve kornacki, this was the pairing you mentioned to us in the first moments after the debate. Yeah. I think castro was so interesting tonight. You heard it a bit there with chris, in that his message tonight, sort of, i think, aligns with where the political world has come to in this moment. Immigration is one of the major points that castro is stressing. He tried to separate himself from the rest of the film. Being from texas, a border state and all that comes with that. What you saw in that debate tonight, is a message that matches where the Democratic Party is in this moment. And somebody, i think this is critical, when you have ten candidates on stage like this, somebody who is capable of delivering that message. Castro and cory booker are interesting to me because they are two candidates who, early in their political careers, were marked as people with national potential, potentially. National political potential. In 2012, who did barack obama choose as the keynote speaker at the convention who renominated him . It was castro. Hes had that potential. Im interested to see what happens with him. And cory booker, you had him on a minute ago. I can remember almost 20 years ago, starting out covering politics in new jersey, watching cory booker run for mayor of newark, new jersey. And he lost that race in 2002. He won in his Second Time Around in newark. I remember, they talked about, when he last that first mayoral race, the buzz was that booker lost the city of newark. But he had won the state of new jersey. Cory bookers appeal back then. Its interesting to see him running on the city message. Steve kornacki at the pord. Elizabeth warren with chris matthews. Elizabeth warren, i think you won tonight. Oh. And the reason i do this, ive been watching these debates all my life. And just talk about this. You only have a few minutes. I thought you had a consistent, relentless message of pop ypopu. We have to bring down the big power and disburse that power among the people. This is why im running for president. We have a country that works great for a thinner and thinner slice at the top. This is going for a long time. It started long before donald trump got here. But now, it has really taken off. Our big chance is not to roll back the clock or to make a change here and a change there. Its to make big systemic change, to take this corruption headon, reset the economy and the commits and make it work for the people. We had lunch about a month ago. You made a point that youre a democrat, youre not a socialist. No. You want to do something with the market to make it better. What separates you have bernie . It was used in the 60s, structural change. Its real. It says, look, right now, we have a political problem. That is money makes its way felt in every decision in washington. Can you tell when a colleague has been bought . Come on. Look at the votes. You can tell when a colleague has been bought . Sometimes. And sometimes you have to wonder. Understand, chris, thats looking at this thin slice of it. Its not only the campaign contributions. How many times have the lobbyists been in to talk to the staffers. How many times have how do they grease their way in . They grease their way in. How about the revolving door. Did you read Jack Abramoffs book . I dont think i did. He represented the Indian Tribes and exmroiploited the hell out him. He exploited everyone for money. He would talk about and say to young staffers, when youre through being a staffer, come over to our shop because we think you have promise. At that point, he no longer had to staff. I know how this works. They come around in the tans and the expensive suits. If you work with me on the inside, i might give you a job later. Heres the deal. I have the biggest anticorruption plan since watergate. We can attack this head of on. If we do, Everything Else we need to work on, it will be youre on a roll. Brian, back to you. We have to air a piece of business. Were going to be away for 60 seconds. And come back with more. Good morning. In washington, its 4 00 in the east. 1 00 out west. The first democratic debate is over. Who won . Who lost . And why . Im with bernie on medicare for all. If you did your homework on this issue, we should repeal this section. We have to be engaged. As a soldier, i will tell you, that is unacceptable. I dont make all of the promises that everyone makes
