Display backed by opera. And the rnc ended with a physical gathered that looked like a prepandemic event. Crowds gathered on the south lawn. No distancing, very few mask, and trump arguing to them in person that he sees joe biden as a gateway to this radical socialist. This election will decide whether we save the American Dream or whether we allow a socialist agenda to demolish our cherished destiny. Joe biden is not a savior of americas soul. He is the destroyer of americas jobs and if given the chance, he will be the destroyer of american greatness. Biden is a trojan horse for socialism. Trump talked up destruction and socialism, there were audible protesters nearby, a real world homegrown washington, d. C. Dissent to the warnings of chaos. Meanwhile, a trump backer who is known for going off script, Rudy Giuliani argued democratic government is dang and joe biden not up to the task while he quarantines. It is clear that a vote for biden and the democrats creates the risk that you will bring this lawlessness to your city, to your town, to your suburb. There is no question that this awesome job of restoring safety for our people cannot be done from your basement, joe. Were joined now by former chairman of the Republican Party on this big republican night. Dont know if he is in a basement north, but it is Michael Steele. You know him. Were also joined by blake zeff. He knows his way around conventions and our friend liz plank, host of spin and author of for the love of men. This is a power panel for a finale night when americans have been watching all of this. Michael steele, what did you think of the punches landed . Well, so the punches were in some cases pretty good. They had some definition on joe tonight. Be thats just i think more the combination as opposed to any one singular punch. So yeah, i think in that regard, the Joe Biden Campaign probably has to come back and respond to some of that tomorrow. But overall, i still think this thing missed the mark simply because elections are about expansion, conventions are a way to create the backdrop for that. Dont get me started on the white house as a backdrop. But the whole idea is to create the kind of momentum coming off the president ial the president s moment, the nominees moment that carries you. I dont think it carries him as far as some may be saying, as you alluded in the intro. Even fox was kind of like yeah, it was good speech, you know. Michael, fox is not feeling it. We even have a little bit of that. Yeah. I want to bring in liz on the fear, because that was a big theme. But donald trump is the incumbent. So this can cut both ways. He even talked up, take a listen, violence in the streets. There is violence and danger in the streets of many democratrun cities throughout america. This problem could easily be fixed if they wanted to. Just call. Were ready to go in. We will take care of your problem in a matter of hours. Just call. We have to wait for the call. Its too bad we have to. But we have to wait for the call. Liz . I wonder if hes going to give us his phone number so we can call to fix problems of his that his administration is overseeing. So obviously, we have seen joe biden and Kamala Harris respond to this say, this is trumps america. Right . And they are laying out the problems that are existing under this current administration. And i think for many of us who are watching, right, talk about mob rule, talking about bulldozing the suburbs, talking about that there is no such thing as a peaceful protester, i think for a lot of us this was ridiculous and this was laying out a reality of sort of fictional reality. But we have to remember that for a subset of the population, this wasnt derision, this was inspiration. We know that there are young particularly white men who are being radicalized by the president. We know there is one this week who took up his own arms and killed and shot protesters in the street and used that same kind of rationalization of that kind of behavior, right, legitimizing violence because of protection, legitimizing violence because the protests, the looters, these people are dangerous. So we really have to be careful in the way that we talk about this. And in the way we where we put the responsibility and who becomes accountable. Because it is i believe incredibly dangerous, and this rhetoric will not as we no in the next few weeks, you know, will only get worse. No, i appreciate your point there. This is not a drill. As you say, people dying just two nights ago in wisconsin because they were shot by someone. Ago in wisconsin. And while you cant draw a direct line on it yet, because there is a court fleece can define a hate crime and go through a trial, you can certainly see a president who has led a Grievance Campaign and openly advocated violence in general. He has. I want to bring in blake zeff. We talked about it before. An effective convention mobilizes your side and hopefully recruits some other people in, as Michael Steele said. So it was really striking tonight, im sitting there watching the speech and im thinking, how sit really playing . And gosh, its long, to the point not only some of the audience, but the president seemed tired. Im not going to go there and say l. E. , low energy. That is his term. So it was very striking. At the immediate conclusion of the speech with fox news, and we know from the data, millions of people watching, typically more than broadcast Networks Watch fox on Republican Convention nights. And this is what they heard. I want viewers here to see this. They saw Chris Wallace pan it. Take a look. I thought the president , who we have seen really turn on a crowd, was surprisingly flat. The fact that there were 2,000 people in close quarters on the south lawn there with no seemingly very few of them with masks, no social distancing. Blake, im curious with whether you think in some ways this under delivered even as a performance for his base. You know, when i look at the last two weeks of conventions, the democratic convention, im the Republican Convention this week, im reminded of Michelle Obamas comment from four years ago. When they go low, we go high. This is a man of empathy, a man of decency. They really hammered that as their core message, integrity, restoring grace and all that kind of stuff. Trump this week said i see your empathy and integrity and im going give you lies and breaking of norms and certainly possibly even laws. Im going talk about as liz said fear tactics, all that kind of stuff. You have very two different tactics here, the low and the high. Look, i dont know which one is going to persevere. In 2016 it didnt quite work out that well for the democrats. Well find out in the next 60 days whether its the low or the high that ultimately prevails. When Chris Wallace says oh, that was flat. Youve been in these war rooms where you guys watch everything. What do you think is going on there . Do you think the white house and trump 2020 noticed . Trumps not a great speaker. I think he does well from a performative standpoint of a rally. He feeds off of a crowd. It wasnt a huge crowd, but he is used to not having huge crowds. Be a ba bump bump. And he is not used to reading a teleprompter as well. He was getting sweaty. He was having trouble standing. I was falling asleep in the end. It was not a great moment of soaring oratory. Republicans this week did a good job with production. They know how to put on a show. I think for the week they were fine. Is trump a great speaker . Is he likened himself to honest abe tonight as he has done in the past . Is he going to be remembered in the pantheon of great president ial speeches . No. I dont think he achieved that tonight. Blake, on the politics after it, i think you made a fee point, that dont trump is under estimated and he did find that Electoral College lane in 2016 and he did run a different kind of rhetorical campaign. And then people start thinking oh my god, whats going to happen in the speech, and as you say, he is a good communicator. When it comes to giving an address that involves details over a period of time, the thing we expect of government leaders, you watch that and go oh, hes not that good about it, or its not that natural. He didnt seem that enthused going through what someone wrote out, we have to hit the things do you. We should mention the first term. To that point, michael, he talked about nato. He talked about certain things that did half. Then they brought in, and im sure Michael Steele, you knew this was going toe come, they brought in the big guns, the oratory that everyone is excited about. You know what it is. Mitch mcconnell just lighting it up with a taped speech about fearing democrats. Take a look. Todays Democrat Party doesnt want to improve life in middle america. They prefer that all of us all in fly overcountry keep quiet and let them decide how we should live our lives. They want to tell you when you can go to work. When your kids can go to school. Michael . Moving. Moving. Just riveting. And thats thats the goal. Look, you know, i think in one sense, its funny you should play Mitch Mcconnell of all the speeches tonight. Because when i was watching, i was thinking, mitch do not want to be doing this. No, he is not feeling this at all. You dont think he was into it . No, not in the least but he knows he has to because he has a down ballot problem and right now, republicans are looking at at least four seats and by some pollings i have seen, somewhere around six or seven seats that are on the block for a loss this november. So hes got to do his thing. The fact that he was not here in washington was a very loud signal. I dont care how you cut it. The reality of it is, while seemingly everybodys together, between the white house and the senate and the republicans, youre turning it in that space now where theyre looking at each other and goes whos not going to be here come january . And thats starting to matter a bit more than you are reminding michael, youre reminding people that Mitch Mcconnell is usually in washington. His job duties mean he is there more than other members of congress. He just couldnt be in washington tonight. You saw the crowd shot. There were plenty of dignitary, officials, go ahead. I was going to say, look at it this way. Consider his age. Right . Can you imagine knowing him as i do, he did not want to be in that environment. That was just not going to be a situation where Mitch Mcconnell is going to show up at a 2,000 person event on the white house lawn sitting literally sandwiched in between people. Respect. I respect anyone i plays into it. Anyone making a medical decision, of course. So it sounds like, youre saying Mitch Mcconnell doesnt believe that the virus is going to just quote disappear. No, and he no, and he has said as much. And i think, you know, the fact of the matter is, there are some really strong realities coming home to roost for a lot of guys now, and theyre back home in the states and in their districts. There only so much from the rah rah you get. From your base. You still have to talk to real people who are not feeling what youve been up to, not feeling the support youve given trump, and they vote too. And thats why the numbers are looking like theyre looking right now. And so this i dont know how they stop this slide. Maybe my colleagues can share that view. But i dont know how they stop the slide once it starts and thats the hard part. And thats what Mitch Mcconnell is looking at right now from the senate in which he is the minority leader again. Blake, the other thing the conventions do, whether theyre virtual or physical is they show the party and they show what the party wants people to think of it. They show its the members on stage. You dont have a group shot of the entire caucus or the entire congress delegation. You have the people they put out. One thing i noticed im curious what you thought, and im going to play one senator here, i noticed it felt so often there were two groupings. There were i say this respectfully but there were relatively random people that were being touted by the Republican Party for whatever it wanted to try to say, diversity, or look what we have out in the states, an attorney general from a random state put up on stage when thats rare, because its not a very senior position nationally. So there was that grouping. And then there were the people around donald trump who were propped up. We just saw Rudy Giuliani, who is not exactly a big figure, hasnt held office in a long time. Last time he ran he was beaten badly. But he was held up because he is a trump buddy. With that in mind, we also some of the other figures in congress who have held up a vision of trumpism. Including when it comes to muscular quote unquote America First foreign policy. Here was senator tom cotton. Well stand alone if we must to defend america. Donald trump understands this. We need a president who stands up for america. Not one who takes a knee. A strong and proud america is a safe america. Safe from our enemies and safe from war. Blake, what did you think of the people like senator cotton who got these plum spots . Well, that little excerpt that you just showed of cotton, i took that comment about taking a knee to be a reference to Colin Kaepernick and the other athletes who are taking a knee during the anthem. I assume thats what were all thinking there im glad you raised that because i dont think we can talk about tonights speech or this weeks festivities without talking about race. Its one of the biggest issues people are discussing in this country right now. Professional athletes arent playing. And then the backdrop of all that tonight, we have the convention where its more doubling down, tripling down, quadrupling down, the cops are amazing. Theyre flawless. We dont want these people its funny, with kaepernick to take a step back, all of the sudden you heard a couple of other speeches who said, i think Rudy Giuliani who you just mentioned is if its peaceful protest, thats totally fine. Its just that when it gets violent were upset about it. Colin kaepernick lost his job and for the last three or four years persona non grata and smeared because of all this. So now were already seeing revisionist history. Im glad you mentioned that. There is a stark contrast whats happening in the country right now, a conversation that the country is trying to come to grips with, trying to move forward, and what you heard tonight really sounded just completely dissonant from that conversation america is having. Thats an important backdrop. I want to thank blake and liz. You may recognize him as the kind of journalist that is called on to even moderate debates, you know, old school. You know what im saying, john . Or at least old, right, ari . Very modest. Youre big time, is what im saying. You have been around the conventions and they have a fierce battle between we listened to some of the rnc side. We have more of it coming up. But right now we also want to show senator harris hitting hard with this prebuttal they released time before the president took the stage. Take a look. Donald trump has failed at the most basic and important job of a president of the united states. He failed to protect the american people. Plain and simple. Trump showed that we in the Legal Profession would call a reckless disregard for the wellbeing of the american people. She is using her chops, her cred to say that while he may not have caused those deaths, he disregard them. Effective . I think thats the right message, ari, and i think she delivered it pretty well. I, like many others thought that senator harris was the safe choice, was the most likely choice for biden. I thought she was not a very effective president ial candidate at all. She couldnt really decide what her message was. But this is the kind of role that i think suits her very well, to go after trump and the way by the way she went after biden in the primary. She can really focus on a message. And i think it is somewhat foolish of the democrats to say trump is responsible for all 180,000 deaths. But to say that his treatment of the pandemic has been awful and that he has had, as she put it using the legal term a reckless disregard for everyone but himself i think is a pretty effective message. Yeah, it is striking. As you say for voters who are following everything closely, but know that many countries have struggled with covid. Many countries have the deaths. Maybe not as bungled a federal response, but they have them. So finding something that feels factual and fair rather than just blaming it all may be both true and politically effective. And boy are these conventions about landing your political punches. As for the president , lets take a brief look at how he went after joe biden tonight. At the Democrat National convention, joe biden and his party repeatedly assailed the america as a land of racial, economic, and social injustice. How can the Democrat Party ask to lead our country when it spends so much time tearing down our country . Joe biden is weak. He takes his marching orders from liberal hypocrites who drive their cities into the ground while fleeing far from the scene of the wreckage. Jon . Positive uplifting message from the president tonight to come out with the convention, ari. But what i think is really interesting is there were some good lines that you just showed about democrats tearing down america. I think they can be pretty effective for him in the midst of a long and somewhat boring and soporific speech by the president he is telegraphing as this entire convention did what their main message is going to be at least thats the plan, ari. And that is the whole law and order message that if you let joe biden become president , there is going to be ongoing violence in the streets. The suburbs wont be safe. This is an attempt obviously to bring back parts of the coalition that helped trump win in 2016, but that he lost in 2018. Suburban women, for instance, who have gone away from trump. Hes trying to scare people back into the fold as it were. And while that may seem obvious, as you mentioned before, those of us who follow this at a granular level, it could be very, very effective as a Campaign Message has been. It has been effective going back to Richard Nixon and before. Were running over on time for the segment. You said soporific. Does that mean to cause sleep . It does indeed. As you well know. And lets get right to mike pence who had a little trouble. Now i just want to remind everyone, reagan ran on make America Great. And then he ran reelection on make America Great again which donald trump shamelessly plagiarized. Thats a reference to the theft of words. Pence took it somewhere else entirely. Take a look. We will make America Great again again. Now im not sure if he had that planned or not. I want for everyone to understand. Is it a blooper or not . One more time, take a look. We will make America Great again, again. Sam . All right, i think he meant to say it. I think they were really impressed by it, because they wanted to run it again. He could have said, i want to make America Greater, i guess. But that doesnt sound as good as make America Great again, again. In your view, did he land the second again . Yeah, i think he can probably land a third. I think he could have landed a third. I mean, honestly, if trump were to win and trump were to run, it would be America Great again, again and again. Youre right. They also say, its a thing that is said. Was biden going to offer you the third obama term you didnt get, and with the trump loyal following, it would be make America Great again again. Again. Im glad we talked this through. Right. My sense is that the folks watching the Republican National convention fall into two categories. One is people like maybe like myself who might be finding it amuse, and others who really just everything i think is treated as if it is we dont take it literally. We take the meaning. And i think people ate that up. I have no doubt about it. There you go. Well, then, lets look at another moment that may or may not have been eaten up. There is a whole part of the internet that even before donald trump was president celebrated him as saying well, were in on the joke. He is not serious about everything. You can see this in normal parts of the internet like youtube where you can say oh, look at him flexing. You can see it in darker, more bigoted parts like subthreads on reddit and places that have actually been banned on some platforms. Im not banding it all together by any means. But they talk about trump flexing. He tried to do it for a moment, boasting about where he lives. Take a look. The fact is im here. Whats the name of that building . But i will say it differently. The fact is, were here and theyre not. Did he land the flex . Yeah, well, i mean, that was a rip on what barack obama had said at one point to the republicans. You know, you lost the election. Were here. And i think donald trump was also, was also, you know, basically making a jab at people who are upset about the hatch act. I mean, he is not supposed to be, there and its his way of basically saying, you know, you and what army . I mean, frankly, i really do think the democrats should try and do something about it. To be honest with you. And when they dont, its going to make them look its going to be even bigger flex. Well, fair. I mean, true. True and fair perhaps. Michael, we believe we can do more than one thing with our lives, within this hour, with our time on earth. I did have fun with sam. We wanted to get into this with you. I know you care about it. Were living through and i want to give the audience a little more, the National Unrest and defined in summer that hung over the conventions after this weekends Police Shooting of jacob blake. Thank you for joining the conversation. Here is some context. Policing debates continue and there are facts and law thags people need to know about. You look at the Police Shooting blake. This is a still. Shot in the back as he walked away. Hoe was not armed at the time. And some People Stress that blake was not complying with officer requests, that is legally irrelevant. Its illegal to use deadly force on someone if they are fleeing. If they dont pose a deadly threat. The Supreme Court ruled on this all the way back in 1985 after police shot someone who was 100 pounds, 15 years old, a young black boy who had stolen 10. Here is a brief part of the coverage at the time. One of those is an edward garner, a 100pound unarmed 15yearold who died one night on this fence in memphis after he failed to heed a Police Warning to stop as he fled with 10 and a purse from an empty house. I dont see no reason why they should have shot him, no reason whatsoever. Michael, no reason to shoot that boy. It went all the way to the Supreme Court, saying that is illegal. And i think its important as we listen and learn that everyone understand just how extreme and potentially illegal some of the instances of Police Brutality are and how theyre disproportionately practiced against african americans. Your conclusion now as we conclude two weeks of conventions. Well, you know, some people like to put it up to training, police training. Its more than that. It is something thats about the individual. Theres something about the individuals who are coming in to these jobs who have a are predisposed to look at black men a certain way. I dont know how you you know, look at a dylan roof and take him to burger king and make sure he is nice and comfortable and yet george floyd has a knee in his neck. Or, you know, we see ourselves looking at another incidence, a young white man, 17 years old, shoots and kills two people, shoots another person, walking down the street with an ak47. Not one but three Police Humvees pass him. He has his arms up because he thinks oh that. Got me. Everybody is yelling because he shot somebody. No, they just let him go and they have to look for him after the fact. And yet, you know, you have to mr. Baker with seven bullets in his back as he was being detained. So the question becomes, what is it that you see in a black man that makes you want to shoot and kill him . And you have someone, a white perpetrator of a crime, you know, you just pat them down, and get them. No stress, no fuss, no muss. You showed earlier this afternoon in your show, the clip of the young white guy, just killed three people, running around buck naked, right . He was violent. Everybody knew he was violent. The man is out there and killed three people. And they pepper sprayed him and all the cops running away from him because hes naked. Im like, dude. So what do you do . What do we do with that . So what do you think the black community is going to think when we see these episodes play out the way they do in that neighborhood versus how they play out in our neighborhood, you know . How many white mamas have to tell their sons or this young man, dylann roofs mom telling him now, you know, when you go out, you encounter the police, you got to be careful because, you know, there could be problems. No, that conversation never happens. And yet in the black neighborhood, young mothers, grandmothers are telling their kids its yeah you, can you go out and play, but if the cops come by, just come on in the house. That is what our boys are growing up with. And so when you see the disparity, ari, when you see the way the cops approach the individual, were not even talking about what happens after the fact. Were talking about just in the approach. I mean, you go and look at the video of baker, there were at least five, six moments before he was shot that he could have been subdued if he was a threat. That he could have been deterred in his movements without violence or force, and yet they saw him more as a threat than they would see someone like the 17yearold walk do you think the street with an ak47. And the only way i conclude it is this. A black man with a cigarette standing on the street corners of new york is more dangerous than white boy with an ak47 walking down the street after having killed two people. Thats america today. And you wonder why people are protesting . What point does it become enough . Or too much . We have work to do. And i dont know if white folks are ready to do the work. Because its not going to be pretty. There is a lot of stuff to be answered for. And it starts with and please dont do this sort of blue this, blue that. Black folks respect the police. Black folks appreciate what the police do in their community when its done right, when they protect and serve correctly. Thats not the point. The point is when it goes bad. And no one wants to seems to want to be held accountable for it. Whos been brought to account for breonna taylor. Dont worry, ill wait. And thats the point. We are always waiting for someone to be held accountable for the killing of a black we have to pull it out of the system. Mamas got to stand in front of banks of microphones, crying, upset. Yeah. And i just dont get it. And i dont think a lot of americans do at this point. Yeah. That was an exposition, and i think you hit a lot of the key points, particularly your pressure on whether the establishment and white america, whatever you want to call it s is going to confront the fact that these systems of state violence are a part of the current equilibrium. So if youre living under this, right, if this is the local, political, National System youre living under, you are a part of it. Youre complicit with it and you have to figure out how to fix it, or youre a part of it and thats what youre living with. I also want, you mentioned the piece we did earlier today and it documented a story some of the people are familiar with, like dylann roof who literally was convicted of murdering several impeachment. Yeah. He is a mass murderer. Police knew that when they peacefully apprehended him. The other individual you mentioned was indicted, allegedly killing two people. And was running around looking like a danger to others, because something was up. He had already killed two people, and was naked and was running and not a single shot was fired. Not a single shot was fired at the leg or anything versus what you just described. In mr. Blakes case we have reporting that was only three minutes from when the police pulled up to putting seven shots pointblank in his back. Not any time to even deescalate let alone learn the situation. The final thing i want to get from you tonight, i so appreciate you being a part of this. Sure. Like i mentioned. I know how much you care is understanding how late america is to the conversation. Black leaders, writers, artists have been pressing this case for decades. Thats something weve tried to document here on msnbc. Then ill let you respond. A lot of talk about the coal jobs. They are actually down 900 under the trump administration. Even before covid, the job growth rate trailed the obama administration. And so my question to you, given those facts, those are facts there are on the screen. Citizens know them. Do you think the president should acknowledge the broken economic promises tonight or is your political view you just ignore that . Ari, my view as a proud american is that the president should come out there tonight and say that he is the best thing that happened to america in a very long time. That people have got more money, the economy was absolutely booming before covid19 happened, something completely beyond his control. This is the jobs president. Should he blame covid . Should he blame covid then for the fact he hasnt delivered on all the economic pledges . Well, i think he has delivered enormously on the economic plejs, ari. But not on the ones i just mentioned. I wont repeat them. Now is your chance to show whether you can engage those fax or not. Like i say, ari, i dont have those numbers. I think this president has done great things for jobs everywhere. You decided to cherry pick a particular statistic. Whether or not that statistic is right or wrong i cant confirm right now live on air. But i dont know what he has done or what he hasnt done, ari, but if what is alleged is true, then obviously its a very bad thing thats occurred, and i think the president and any normal person would condemn that kind of fraudulent activity.
