Some people say thats ridiculous. Age is just an illusion. How you show up for the world, thats whats real. Whats your idea . I put it out there with a godaddy website. The United States grapples with a surge in new covid cases, across the atlantic, the eu is preparing to reopen its borders and welcome tourists for the First Time Since the pandemic began, but given the state of the pandemic here in the u. S. , american tourists will not be permitted to set foot in the eu until further notice. Joining us now is keir simmons, your family tell you to stay put in case you cant come back . Reporter you know what, my family, my family are very happy to have me here right now. For all kind of reasons. You know, look, this was inevitable. Dr. Fauci talking about the potential of 100,000 infections a day there, not being able to come here to the European Union was inevitable. One thing to underscore that i think thats important is the Economic Impact of this, american tourists are worth more than 100 billion a year, they are the main tourism that comes here to europe. So i think the damage for europe is serious, its not just a case of europe locking out americans. That goes to the point that we talk again and again about the American Leadership in the world, whats happening in america with did coronavirus right now is going to have an impact around the world and i know for everyone right there the big worry is health. Theres an economy worry here. That will impact globally not just domestically. We worry about the health of our families and we worry about the hefrlt of our entire countrys economy. I have to follow up though on a conversation that we started yesterday the news for donald trump has only become more dire, he was briefed in his pdb on february 27th according to reporting in the New York Times. Based on reporting in the the New York Times there are at least three marines who may have lost their lives as a result of that bounty program. You spoke to Vladimir Putins righthand man who sounded a lot alike to President Trumps spokesgal. I mean, were awaiting of course to hear from the white house right now and the questions are likely to be about russia. Another part of interview with dmitri peskov. We talked about this yesterday, i asked him about john boltons suggestion that even after helsinski, where they had a twohour conversation trump and putin, if he accepted there hadnt been very much progress in america russia relations. Have a listen to what he had to say. Well, the current state of relationship is very unsatisfactory for us. We would prefer to have really Good Relationship with the United States and it was mentioned numerous times by our president. He has said that we weve been interested in mutual beneficial relationship with the United States, also a good understanding and a good harmony in the field of arms control, because this is in the interest of the whole world. Reporter i think that answer is really fascinating, nicolle. Heres why, you could have heard the same answers from the russians before 2016, in other words, president putins guy there is accepting that nothing has really changed. Thats not to dilute all of the rightful questions today about what exactly was going on in afghanistan and what President Trump did about it and what the russians were doing there. But i think its interesting to consider that despite that did domestic political row, to consider that despite all of the friendly phone calls and the friendly meetings and the claims that President Trump is frankly toward president putin when they speak, nothing really has changed. You mentioned at the end there, you heard him talking about arms control. If in fact, some of the arms agreements have been have been wound up under President Trump. Another one agreed under president obama that might well run out next year. Theyre negotiating over that right now. Keir simmons, i never get enough of your reporting on the view from moscow, only because its so eerie on how it syncs up with the view from the white house. When we return joe biden steps back on the campaign trail and steps up his attacks on donald trump. Well be back after a quick break. I can hardly wait to compare my cognitive capability to the cognitive capability of the man im running against. Former Vice President joe biden ramping up his attacks on Donald Trumps response to the coronavirus pandemic. Hitting it where its hurts there. Pushed for more testing, more face coverings and vowed hell stay off the campaign trail. Despite the administrations propaganda that their response a cause for celebration, despite President Trumps request that we should slow down testing because he thinks it makes him look back, covid19 is still here. The daily threat to American Health and prosperity is continuing. It didnt have to be this way. Statewide lockdowns and so Many Americans lived under for months were intended to buy us time to get our act together. Instead of using that time to prepare ourselves, donald trump squandered it. The message is a stark contrast to the president s, o whos held two long rarge rallid still doesnt wear a mask. A headline from politico this week, a sun belt time bomb threatens trumps reelection. Joining us now is charlie sykes. You know, charlie, joe biden has ended up so far ahead of donald trump in some of these really, in all of the swing states that its hard to criticize any of his choices about staying off the trail, about sort of choosing his moments, to weigh in on the debates, what do you think . Well, i agree with you. I mean, theres an incredible moment taking place in american politics right now, a pew poll just came out this afternoon showed 71 of americans are angry when they think about the state of the country. 66 are fearful. Only 17 are proud of the country. This takes place during a presidency of a man who said he was going to make us great again. Heres joe biden, whose main job is to reassure america, make himself a plausible alternative and i think that hes succeeded in doing that so far. But what youre seeing now is a presidency really in freefall. I know we talked about this is bad or this is bad. Right now, you have an alignment of the planets for donald trump thats really quite extraordinary. One poll, only 19 of republicans and republicanleaning voters say they are satisfied with the direction of the country. Thats a very, very ominous number for any incumbent but especially for donald trump. Heidi, John Heilemann was here yesterday and reported about karl roves role in advising Senate Republicans to change course and urge donald trump to change course, you see mitch mcconnell, all of a asuddn being a mask enthusiast. What are you hearing about the possibility or the prognostication about the senate races in the fall . It does seem that the president is increasingly isolated in terms of his resistance to set an example, just occasionally in terms of wearing a mask. Now you have republicans at the highest levels coming out and saying, hey, we need leadership on this. Were going you know, come out and set an example for everyone in our state. Regardless of what the president is doing. However, in many of these races, like here in michigan, where i am, these candidates are tied to the president. They had a very promising candidate here, john james, who was an africanamerican republican, they were very excited about, hes way down in the polls just like the president is in michigan compared to joe biden. I think what youre seeing now is with joe biden coming in at this time hes seizing this moment at a time when states like this, like michigan, which had worked so hard to bring down that curve, to flatten the curve and were succeeding in that, are now starting to go into the red and youre seeing joe biden say, hey, you know what, thats not happening in europe. Thats not happening because europeans followed their leaders in terms of following basic scientific protocols. Thats a very clear contrast especially in some of these states that are going to be so critical not in terms of the senate races but terms in the president ial race seeing that that leadership does in fact make a difference. You heard joe biden say its not just about the masks, guys, its about the president not using all of his authorities. Take it from me, i have been there before. The same thing in the fall when a vaccine comes out, the president is not using his authority to try and organize a Distribution Channel for an an. All of these authorities that have gotten us essentially nowhere because the president s not using them. Were back to the same place that we were in march whereas you look at whats happening in europe, they are flattening the curve. Its such a good point, heidi. And we havent begun to examine any sort of impact or what has seeped into the public mood from donald trump branding the vaccine operation warp speed. A lot of people dont find that the most comforting way to bring any vaccine to market. I need you two to stick around for another block. Ive got lots more to cover with both of you. Dont go anywhere. Well be right back. Back with us now, editor at large for the bulwark, Charlie Sikes and heidi przybyla. Ive been told that Kayleigh Mcenany is attacking the leakers. I know from my experience in government that when a story is true and youve got nothing else, attack the leakers. Youre speaking, of course, of the russia story, nicolle . Yes. Attacking the leakers. Well, of course. No one is denying this is true. At least anyone in position of authority. Weve now seen Senior Republicans on the hill such as representative mccall, we saw gina haspel put out a statement from the cia that did not deny this intelligence was accurate. And so you see joe biden now and other democrats seizing on this to say the only excuse now that this white house has is that the president just didnt know. Well, thats not a very good excuse, according to the democrats and in joe bidens word, its dereliction of duty. Charlie, this afternoon, the New York Times added to their extraordinary body of reporting on this story with a headline that says data on financial transfers bolstered suspicions that russia offered bounties. This intelligence was taken seriously. So seriously that theyve actually investigated and followed the money which is one of the most sure ways to corroborate a transaction which is what this was. Money for the killing, the murder of the slaughter of u. S. Soldiers. A program that russia put in place. A program briefed to donald trump as early as to the white house as early as 2019, to trump on february 27th based on reporting in the New York Times. Where do we go from here . Is this a new bottom, or do you think theres more . We dont know, but this is a deadly story for donald trump who has built his brand around being supportive of the military, America First and being supportive of the troops. This story is not going away. We will find out what the president knew and when he knew it despite his attempts to spin it, and its a very easy to understand story despite all the Little Details of the russians were paying to kill american soldiers and the president either knew about it and didnt do anything about it or he was so clueless that he was not able to perform his duties. Theres a reason why veterans and serving members of the military are absolutely livid about all of this. So this is one of those stories that revives so many questions about donald trump. Its one of those all roads meet here. His relationship to russia, his deference to Vladimir Putin, and his dereliction of duty. This is a huge scandal. And if and when we do find out that he knew or should have known, its just going to be one more straw thats going to break this camels back. Charlie sikes, heidi przybyla, thanks for spending time with us. Coming up, blockbuster new developments in the russia bounty story. Deadline white house, next. Its 4 00 in the east on a day of blockbuster new developments in the unfolding scandal around Donald Trumps abdication of duty when it comes to protecting u. S. Troops on the battlefield. Nbc news has just confirmed reporting that the white house learned as far back as early 2019 about intelligence that russia was offering bounties to the taliban for killing u. S. Troops in afghanistan. Thats according to a person with direct knowledge of the intel. And the New York Times is reporting today that officials provided trump a written briefing on that intel early this year. The news undermining repeated denials yesterday by white house officials and by the president himself that he received such a briefing. The times explains, quote, the white house stands clashed with the disclosure by two officials that the intelligence was included months ago in mr. Trumps president s daily brief document, pdb for short. The compilation of the governments latest secrets and best insights about Foreign Policy and National Security that is prepared for him to read. One of the officials said the item appeared in mr. Trumps brief in late february. The other cited february 27th specifically. Of course, we know the president doesnt read his written pdb, and hes the first president in history not to pore over threats to the nation. Not to mention what we learned from the Washington Post as far back as 2017 that trumps briefers sometimes intentionally bury russia related intel in order to avoid upsetting the president. But theres also some spin being spun today by the Trump Administration and his allies on capitol hill that the reason his briefers didnt sound a louder alarm on russian bounties was that there wasnt enough consensus in the Intel Community that the information was legit. But todays new reporting dismantles that defense, too. The times writes, a description of the intelligence assessment the russian unit had carried out the bounties plot was also seen as serious and solid enough to disseminate more broadly across the Intelligence Community in a may 4th article in the cias World Intelligence review. Its a classified compendium commonly referred to as the wire, two officials said. The times also reported that the intel was shared with our british allies last week but it wasnt solid enough, the white house says, to share with the commander in chief . Now cia director gina haspel is weighing in with a curious mix of attacks on leakers seemingly to placate the president and an acknowledgement of the intel itself and its seriousness. She writes, hostile states use of proxies in war zones to inflict damage on u. S. Interests and troops is a constant longstanding concern. Cia will continue to pursue every lead, analyze the information we collect with critical objective eyes and brief reliable intelligence to protect u. S. Forces deployed around the world. That kind of reassurance takes that the u. S. Takes these things seriously and will work to get to the bottom of it is what we have not yet heard from the president. Hes attacked the reporters on the story. It undermined his Intelligence Community and managed to bring hunter biden into the mix but hasnt managed to squeeze on his twitter feed one single line admonishing Vladimir Putin or even vowing to look into the facts behind yet another potentially explosive russia scandal. Thats where we start with some of our favorite reporters and friends. Former chief of staff for the cia and department of defense, jeremy bash, plus former u. S. Ambassador to russia, Michael Mcfall and reporter adam goldman. You guys moved a story this afternoon with the kind of evidence that suggests not only that the intelligence was taken seriously and used to protect troops in afghanistan, but that they went about doing just what the white house said they hadnt done which was corroborate the intel. Let me read from your news story data on financial transfers bolstered suspicions russia offered bounties. They intercepted electronic data showing large financial transfers from a bank account controlled by russias military Intelligence Agency to a talibanlinked chct was among the evidence that supported their conclusion that russia covertly offered bounties for killing u. S. And Coalition Troops in afghanistan. Thats according to three officials familiar with the intelligence. Explain. Well, what u. S. Intelligence learned is that there was a Russian MilitaryIntelligence Unit known as the gru that had been linked to a taliban account, bank account. And they had been passing money. And as part of this investigation, it looks like special commandos in afghanistan did a number of raids and arrested this afghan businessman who might have had ties to this particular operation or conspiracy, whatever you want to call it. And as part of this, they uncovered about 500,000 in a house that was owned by a member of the taliban. And on top of that, you know, there were detainee interrogations. At least two detainees, possibly associated with the taliban and the ha cqani network. For the people working this, it was an investigation and they had to unspool what they were finding, right . And then they started looking back after they collected evidence and started to piece this thing together. The tactical intelligence or the tactical reporting on the ground to the people who were working this was very, very credible. And there my understanding is there were few doubts on the ground that this was not real or not credible. Adam goldman, you also report that the president s pdb included this intelligence either in late february, according to one source, on the specific date of february 27th, according to the other. Just talk about your reporting around what was in the pdb, how explicit it was, and how it was handled by the white house. Well, in normal circumstances, the president would have read the pdb so the fact of the matter that they put it in the pdb, they thought it was worth the president s attention. We know the president didnt read the pdb. He gets an oral briefing from his intelligence briefer two or three times a week. You know, ambassador bolton says he doesnt even take them seriously. So the information was there. It was there for him to absorb. You know, theres been other reporting that stretches back to 2019. We havent confirmed that, but we understand this has been percolating for a while. This idea that the president shouldnt have been told about it is silly and the republicans cant seem to get their stories straight. Yesterday they accuse us of jeopardizing an Ongoing Investigation and today theyre saying, oh, its not credible. The president saying its a hoax. They cant even get on the same page. Mike mccall from texas yesterday said there was strong evidence supporting this and there was strong evidence the other way. So at some point, if it was worth being in a pdb, youd think somebody would have told the president about this. Ambassador mcfall, never to be confused with congressman mccall, mentioned by adam goldman here, you are a consumer or you were in gfrk government. Lets do some longtime myth busting. The one person in this conversation who was a flack, a spinner. When you are attacking the leakers, the story is true, full stop. Two, the idea that the president is either a toddler who cant be briefed on a potential threat to troops on a battlefield until i mean, basically their standard is until it happens. Well, it would appear the times is also reporting there are at least three deaths of u. S. Marines that may be tied to this bounty program. It appears the threat did come to pass. The white house standard is not the standard that has ever been in place for a president to learn of potential threats to u. S. Persons, especially troops. Thats right, nicolle. I want to remind you before i went to mosmoscow, i worked in white house in the first three years of the obama administration. Read the pdb every day. Obviously, that president read the pdb every day and as well as the briefing. But i underscore that point because his National Security adviser and other people that work at the nsc also read that pdb. So this excuse that somehow he doesnt read so he doesnt know is not credible to me. Number two, you know, intelligence is hard. By the way, incredible reporting that the New York Times just dropped today, adam. The level of detail that is in that story is really amazing to me. And i think it will have to be as detailed for the Trump Administration to refute it. Thats something im not anticipating. But i want to underscore this point. The team around him, they are supposed to brief the president. Theyre supposed to tell them about it. If it reaches the pdb, that means this intelligence has been at least debated about and maybe there would be a footnote or two in there. When i hear that, well, it wasnt actionable, remember the president is making policy decisions after this information is available. He invited Vladimir Putin to the g7. Thats a policy decision. He decided to reduce troops in germany. Thats a policy decision. And that is incumbent upon the National Security team to put that all together and say hey, mr. President , maybe you dont want to invite this guy to the g7 because of this intelligence we have. But what does it mean that he did . I mean, the problem with that analysis, ambassador, is that they all knew. Donald trump knew. Russians were paying the taliban to murder american soldiers. And donald trump was courting Vladimir Putin and cheerleading his participation, his joining the g8. Both those things are true. What does that mean . Well, thats shocking and horrible. I dont know what else to say but tragically and youre showing the photo right now, its a consistency policy. President trump doesnt have a lot of consistent policies. John bolton says he doesnt believe in anything with respect to Foreign Policy. Over four years theres been one very consistent policy. He wants to be putins friend. He wont listen to his intelligence even about what they did in 2016. And this unfortunately, tragically, is an esclaratory step on behalf of putin. Jeremy bash, gina haspel has finally spoken out and two intelligence officials i spoke to said she needed to. There are times when staying quiet and serving this president and trying to protect her analysts in an extraordinary position between the durham investigation into the origins of the russia probe and all the other pressures trump places on the Intelligence Community. She usually gets a pass from her former colleagues. Not this time. Her statement was curious, though. This red meat she seemed to throw into the trough about leakers and then there was this seeming articulation of what intel is and why it matters. What did you see in the haspel Statement Last night . Well, i saw a director of cia who was trying to make clear, although not saying explicitly that, yes, we told the president. She said it was shared broadly speaking with the National Security community and, believe me, if this wasnt shared with the president , people would have said so. Career people like gina haspel would have said so. We know it was shared with the president in the pdb. John bolton reportedly briefed the president. Robert obrien briefed the president reportedly. So the other question i have, according to the times reporting, some of these pdb articles appeared in late february of this year. Remember, joe mcgwire, the then acting dni, was actually fired by President Trump on february 21st. And ric grenell was put into the job. Thats the ambassador to germany who was the president s political operative who he put in, installed as dni. Ric grenell is now covering for the president because under grenells watch, hes responsible for the pdb, under his watch, these articles were given to the president. Theres a lot of questions that need to be answered. Finally its important to note there are families grieving in our country tonight because they sent people into harms way, believing the commander in chief would protect them. And if you think about the families of Staff Sergeant chris slotkin from new jersey, Sergeant Benjamin hines, Corporal Robert hendricks. These are the three who died in an ied blast in april 2019 that potentially was part of this bounty program. Those families deserve answers. You made that point yesterday, and i was thinking about you making that point when the New York Times, who i think is the only News Organization with that specific reporting on the attack, that may be linked to the bounty program. I want to ask you whether the families of one of those soldiers is now demanding answers. And i think another who has described himself as not being a political person, demanding answers. Does that weigh on the youve worked in both the National Security agencies involved here, both the pentagon and the cia. What is going on inside . What is the churn under the surface of the president s sort of debasement of, frankly, the missions of both buildings. His press secretary out there lashing away at adam and his colleagues. Why not take a turn to the serious . Why not wake up and just play commander in chief for a day and think about those grieving families, jeremy . Agree. First, the Intelligence Community exists to provide the first customer, the president , with information so that the president can guide National Security decision making. And other decisionmakers as well but the president is the first customer as the intelligence professional would say. If hes not going to listen to them if hes going to blow them off, ignore them, be obseiqious to putin, whats the point of having an Intelligence Community. If youre in the pentagon where you sign the orders to send troops into harms way and then have to stand at Dover Air Force base when those remains of those Fallen Heroes are returned to their loved ones in a flagdrapflagdrape ed transfer case you have to be thinking, what am i doing if the president wont wake up and protect the people we sent into harms way. Adam goldman, your reporting on the timeline does thrust the two gentlemen that have taken over, both one that gentleman mentioned by jeremy, mr. Grenell, the other somebody who struggled to get confirmed exactly a year ago, mr. Ratcliffe, for lying about prosecuting terrorists and squeezed through in the halo of the impeachment acquittal or whatnot. What does the reporting suggest about their role in keeping the president apprised of russian intel . Theres been a body of reporting over the last 3 1 2 years, everything from, i believe its your byline about trump being investigated as being a russian agent, wittingly or unwittingly. Now weve got an Intelligence Community that either wittingly or unwittingly shields him from intel about russian aggression. Well, you know, i did an extensive story on the woman from the cia, a career veteran analyst, who is tasked with briefing trump. And she has, you know, what were told, she has a trustworthy relationship with him and she doesnt try to sugarcoat things. If she brings up russian interference in terms of election interference she puts it in the broader scheme of things. China is doing it. Russia is doing it. Ratcliffe, grenell, meadows obrien, these people doing the briefing with the republicans yesterday, shes are not intelligence career officials. They have no professional intelligence background. And i heard from people about this meeting and they were sort of stunned that they were delivering this briefing in primarily doing the briefing. Meadows one moment was a very partisan congressman. The next hes chief of staff delivering an intelligence briefing . So i got some quizzical looks about this from people. And, you know, one thing is clear. What were reporting and the level of what were reporting is not being brought up in these briefings. The fact that they found 500 in cash. The fact they had these intercepts linked to these bank ngtcluding the gru, was not brought up in these discussions with the congressman. If i was a member of congress and doing oversirkght, id be outraged. Why is the New York Times learning more than we are now. If i were a member of the military and it was a member of my family, i would be more than pissed. Well be calling on all of you early and often. When we come back, more on this story. The lives of american military. How can those on the front lines trust that the government has their backs. And former Vice President joe biden, trumps 2020 rival, weighing in as well. He says trumps response, or nonresponse, as it would appear, is a dereliction of duty. Plus, another grim assessment from dr. Anthony fauci. Cases could reach 100,000 a day of the coronavirus as more republicans and trump allies scurry to put the toothpaste back in the tube and urge the president to publicly support mask wearing. Imagine that. Better late than never. All these stories coming up. I see all the Amazing Things you have been doing. You are transforming business models, and virtualizing workforces overnight. Because so much of that relies on financing, we have committed two billion dollars to relieve the pressure on your business. As you adapt and transform, were here with the people, financing, and technology, ready to help. Any commander in chief with a spine would be stomping the living [ bleep ] out of some russians right now. Diplomatically, economically or if necessary, with the sort of asymmetric warfare theyre using to send our kids home in body bags. You are either a coward or youre complicit. Which is it . Donald trump is unfit to be our commander in chief and thats worse than useless. Im a prolife, gunowning combat veteran and i can see trump for what me is. A coward. We need to send this draft dodger back to his golf courses. The lives of our troops depend on it. Wow. Wow. Ive seen a lot of political ads but never one like that. A powerful new ad by the Lincoln Project striking at the heart of this scandal. The safety of u. S. Troops. U. S. Men and women in afghanistan. And now, those who had loved ones killed on the front lines there want answers. The mother of one of the three men killed in a car bombing in april 2019, an attack that the New York Times is reporting is being looked at as a possible russian incentivized attack is demanding action. Quote, the mother said monday that she wants a thorough investigation of reports that her son and two other marines may have been the targets of talibanlinked fighters who collected a bounty on u. S. Soldiers offered by a Russian MilitaryIntelligence Unit. The mother whose son, Corporal Robert hendriks died in the april 8th, 2019, attack told cnbc the parties who are responsible should be held accountable, if thats even possible. Joining our conversation, former special president ial envoy for the Global Coalition to defeat isis. Plus retired fourstar general, general barry mccaffrey. I follow your twitter feed very closely. I just want to hear whats on your mind, general mccaffrey. Well, in 50 years of dealing with National Security issues ive never seen anything like this. I worked in both democratic and republican white houses on National Security issues. What is the chance from your experience that the Intelligence Agency would be reporting the gru is putting out a bounty on u. S. Soldiers, it was widely disseminated, it was the sfubjet of an nsc meeting of the policy group and that the president made, as far as i can tell, five phone calls to putin and nobody came in and said, mr. President , this guy is trying to murder your soldiers. Obviously, he knew about it. Theres no question in my mind, and he was so keen on being subservient to russian and putin interests for whatever reason, trying to get them to join the g7 that he took no action. Normally when our troops get threatened in a battle zone like afghanistan, we tell the intel guys to find those who are threatening ua ining uand we go them. That should have been the First Response followed by a diplomatic response to the russians telling them to knock it off. Personally, its shocking. General mccaffrey, i dont want to let that go. The chances are zero. And i worked for a president who advocated policies that were plenty controversial and hell live with that legacy until the end of time. But any threat to american soldiers anywhere, any threat to americans anywhere was brought to his at any point whether it was a tip, whether it was corroborated, whether it was about to be realized. What is the dysfunction if they have to heres the problem with the white house response. Either they shield him from any credible leads. And this was credible enough that we alerted the british. They convened a deputy sound like a principals meeting in the west wing of the white house. And the New York Times is reporting they ran the money down. They already found the money. Thats usually the end of the investigation. It would suggest the cia, the pentagon, the state department, if the british had been alerted and maybe the fbi. Adam goldman said theyre investigating it like a crime. They all know. Either the president cant handle the truth or he knew and was still courting Vladimir Putin. What does that say about donald trump and Vladimir Putin . Its actually inexplicable. I dont think the russians can believe their eyes and ears that theyve got somebody acting to further their interests and embracing them in public, attacking their European Union nato adversaries for them. Its simply astonishing. Its not to be understood. 20 years from now by the way, when hes out of off, the russians will out him and say this is how we were able to influence trump. But for now, what weve got on the face of it is someone who refuses to confront russian adversarial efforts which include killing our troops. So weve got a problem. Congress oversight function, where were they. What did secretary esper tell the centcom commander . Why didnt the cia run their own covert operation to bag some of these russians in afghanistan . Why didnt we jam the Bank Accounts . These people bear a heavy responsibility. Our National Security process is broken. You were part of that National Security process. I imagine it pains you to hear that. Would you agree . I couldnt agree more. Look, this story is just sickening on so many levels to think about it from the Vantage Point of our men and women over there in afghanistan. I spent a good deal of my professional career in war zones with these men and women. If theres an assumption the commander in chief, theyre under his command and runder hi care. If something is in the president ial daily brief its of significant import and he knows about it and its presumed hell take action. Here its not just the president , maybe he didnt know, he didnt do anything. He spoke with putin five or six times after he knew something. Not only did he speak with him. He invited him back into the g7. So this is totally inexplicable but theres a larger point. And it gets to the pdb. The pdb is the most one of the most Important Documents in the world. One of the most rigorously constructed documents in the world. The president is not only getting this information earlier this year but in january and february, according to the Washington Post, theres a dozen warnings about the pandemic coming out of china. Right. And the president at that time was talking to xi jinping saying everything is fine. This is a president that is a voracious consumer of fox friends in the morning but not a voracious consumer of the intelligence being presented to him to keep our country and our personnel safe. Were in deep trouble here and this is just another dot in the mosaic. You always say it cant get worse. This story is unbelievable. This final point. I was an nsc senior director. Its my job to consume intelligence. I spend an hour every morning doing that. And you ask yourself in that position, what do i know after reading this . Who needs to know . And did i tell them . And if this is in the book, russia has a change of policy to target our troops and put bounties on our troops, the president needs to know. General mccaffrey could not be more right. The chief of staff, everybody reading that intelligence needs to be batting down the door to say, mr. President , we have a problem. And next time you speak with Vladimir Putin, you need to Say Something about it. Brett, which part of this endangers u. S. Troops more . The fact that this is where that the russians are so brazen that theyre, one, transferring money from grulinked accounts to the taliban not taking more care to hide the money. They certainly must know wed go looking for it. Or that the russians now know that trump, when it is known, when it is revealed, that russians pay the taliban to slaughter u. S. Soldiers did nothing . Well, its both. And even the fact that now this is out, the president still has not its unbelievable. The president has not once said, im going to get to the bottom of this. Im going to make sure my people are protected, and im going to take action to protect my people. He acts like this is all about him. Its not about him. Its about our men and women overseas. Its about the protection of our country. So i agree with general mccaffrey. Ive negotiated with the russians. Ive sat across the table with them on serious issues like syria. You say, if you cross this line, we will kill you. Okay . Thats kind of the conversation. But the russians know, any diplomat who is facing off against the russians, they know on the other side of the table that the president does not have the back of our diplomats. He does not have the back of our soldiers because putin can get on the phone and trump will change his mind in a moment. Every world leader knows this. Erdogan, xi jinping. Its put our country at risk. Theres 100something days until an election. A lot can happen over these seven months. Were in the middle of a Public Health crisis, an economic crisis, a Racial Justice crisis. The one thing we dont have is an interNational Security crise, i but i would anticipate one is coming and this white house and this president is so dysfunctional, they are not ready to handle it. Its an incredibly serious moment in our country and this is one dot in the mosaic of everything that weve been talking about for a couple of years since i came out of the Trump Administration. Its one more piece of the puzzle. You know, i want to get both of you one more question. Donald trump likened the Intelligence Community to nazis after he was elected, before he was inaugurated. Then went after jim comey because he refused to drop the flynn investigation. And then smeared mccabe, the fbi director i guess because his wife had the audacity to run for office. Then went after the 17 state department and career diplomats who testified in the impeachment trial. He extorted a foreign leader. None of this elicited a peep, nothing from any republican other than mitt romney. Now weve got, according to the New York Times, three american soldiers who lost their lives because russians paid bounties to taliban militants. Trump was briefed on it and did nothing. Is the Republican Party still a party, general mccaffrey . Well, normally i try and evade strictly partisan issues. I know a lot of these senators who are republicans and admire them. Theyre just good people. Rob portman and others. And it absolutely is mystifying to me that they are remaining silent in the face of, not just mr. Trumps absolute lack of character, but also actions that hes taking that endanger the United States. I mean, the whole notion of yanking a third of our troops out of germany in an obvious tiff over Angela Merkel refusing to come to his g7 meeting because the russians will be there, its just amazing. He takes actions in public that are favorable to our adversaries. Hes an impassive, crude, ignorant man when it comes to these National Security issues. By the way, thats not really a new finding. Helsinki to me was the turning point. I have worked with the cia for 30 years. These are some of the smartest people in our government. Theyre dedicated, brave. They get killed overseas all the time to include in afghanistan. And for him to publicly disown his own loyal, talented Public Servants is astonishing. We are in trouble. Brett, you quit over something the republicans really were pretty quiet about. It was Donald Trumps actions in syria. Secretary mattis also walked away over a policy disagreement that resulted in grave danger and the death of our allies, the kurds. Are you surprised there isnt a Political Party on the right that stands for the men and women of the National Security agencies like the military, like the cia who cant speak out for themselves . I served in the Bush White House for four years. It was down to 48 approval. A lot of partisanship. We never had serious briefings about intelligence to one Political Party. Liz cheney came out with a strong statement. Were going to get to the bottom of this. Were going to protect our people. If this is true, there will be consequences. That should not be hard to say. I certainly hope republican members say that. I hope the president says it. I disagree with general mccaffrey. Were in trouble. Its not just this story. Its the fact this president is not doing his job. First job of the president to keep our country and our people safe. And the silence is deafening. Brett mcguirk and general barry mccaffrey. Great to see both of you on a story like this. Up next americans are flocking back to bars and indoor restaurants and virus cases are surging at the same time. Now some states are pulling back. The latest in the fight against covid, next. What if your clothes could stay fresh for weeks . Now they can this towel has already been used and it still smells fresh. If you look at the curves of the new cases. So weve really got to do something about that and we need to do it quickly. Short answer to your question is that, clearly, were not in total control right now. We are now having 40plus thousand new cases a day. I would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around. And so i am very concerned. Cant put it much plainer than that. We are going in the wrong direction. That was dr. Anthony fauci today. Also suggesting that americans should stop going to bars. New jersey is now just the latest state to halt or reverse the reopening of Indoor Dining following a surge in coronavirus cases. Florida, texas and california have already made similar decisions. Remember what dr. Fauci just said. We are not yet in total control. For that reason, today the European Union announced the United States was left off the list of countries whose virus levels are low enough to allow visitors. In other words, when the eu opens its borders tomorrow, americans will be barred from entry. Joining us now, chairman of the center for africanamerican studies at princeton university, our friend, the author of the new book the be gin again, james baldwins america and its urgent lessons for our own, eddie glaude. Well have a longer conversation about your new book. Plus former democratic congresswoman Donna Edwards is here. Eddie, we have been covering this coronavirus scandal at some of the most fraught moments since it sort of came to our shores, including that long night in tulsa. But dr. Fauci has delivered us a report card, and we have failed. As a country, we have failed. I think thats absolutely right, nicolle. Ive been thinking about this ever since the numbers started to spike. And ive been wondering, what does it mean to what does it suggest about our ability to engage in selfsacrifice . I think what weve seen on display is not just simply an itching to start the economy. Because people need to work. I think in the name of liberty, people have been expressing a deep kind of selfishness. So what and i think its from the top. There hasnt been a call to sacrifice in the name of the public good. And so people are making very dumb decisions and putting people at risk. Were going the wrong direction, and we need to ask ourselves the question, why . And the problem just doesnt reside in the white house. The problem may very well reside in us. Donna edwards, this is this larger question about leadership. And it comes up sort of every third trump manufactured crisis. Everyone says, wheres president obama . Wheres michelle abaobama and george w. Bush . This hunger for postpartisan role models. This hunger for someone like president obama to model behavior. And it is sort of that absence of leadership that seems to have a tangible result. We usually just long for it because we miss what it felt like and what it looked like. But now we see a real danger to our country. Our curve the chart is terrifying. Other countries have this hump and then it comes down slowly and flattens out. Were still going up. Yeah, i have to tell you, listening to dr. Fauci today was one of the most sobering testimony that ive really ever heard and especially during the course of the last several months on the pandemic. And part of the reason is because, you know, there was a time when we knew that we had this surge of cases, but we had an idea that if we just did the right things, if we stayed inside, if we wore our masks, kept our social distance, that we could get a handle on this. And today what dr. Fauci was saying is that we have no control. And the president of the United States has no plan. And hes decided to put this behind him even as cases spike and surge in different states. And that the American People, because they dont have leadership and they dont see it from the top, are not willing to engage in the things that are going to save lives and protect our health and safety. And i think that youre right. The problem is that we have a president who hasnt demonstrated the kind of leadership, modeled the kind of leadership that the American People can follow. And we are at odds. And so you see people clamoring on beaches, going to restaurants and dining, hanging out at bars and now 127,000 people are dead, and more will be, and many, many, many more infected with this virus. And to your point, hes done more than not model behavior. He has mocked reporters Wearing Masks at press briefings and said take that off. And when a reporter refused he just said youre trying to be politically correct. Please stick around over a break because afterwards, were going to talk joe biden. Today he turns the tables on donald trump. The former Vice President wondering if trump is cognitively aware. Oh, accusing him of dereliction of duty. Thats next. Me should have, at a minimum, picked up the phone and said, vladimir, buddy if any of this is true then it seems youve got a big problem. A big problem. And make it clear. Get to the bottom of this. So the idea that somehow he didnt know or isnt being briefed, it is a dereliction of duty if thats the case. And if he was briefed and nothing was done about this, thats a dereliction of duty. Strong words there from joe biden on a day when the White House Press secretary had to come to the microphone and say that the president reads. Biden said it was in his Campaign Launch video more than a year ago that the 2020 race is a battle for the soul of the nation. That framing has endured and looked more prudent by the day. Eddie and donna are back. I dont know about what to say about the white house response. This is so much bigger than trump. And the former intelligence officials i spoke to said, leave trump out of this and look at what trump has done. I mean, the two scenarios are both devastating. He either so destroyed and chilled the intelligence delivery of threats to our troops, threats to our homeland, threats to our nation and soldiers that they had to hide it in plain sight because he didnt read the they told him continued to suck up to Vladimir Putin. Both are horrific statements about the state of americas National Security in Donald Trumps hands. Well, and i think that, you know, joe biden laid it out really plainly and simply for the American People, that this i mean, its tough to be shocked with this president , but this news is really shocking. I mean, the danger that it poses to American Servicemen and women, their deaths that may have resulted as were beginning to learn from the president not really holding Vladimir Putin accountable for anything, and you know, and i think that what were going to see here is a presidency that is completely unraveling, and you know, his willingness to jeopardize the safety of American Service members while he stands on a pedestal waving a flag is disgusting, frankly, and i think that it means that we are at this low point where even the Intelligence Community doesnt have the confidence of the president. Soon the military will not have the confidence of the president. And the American People do not have the confidence in the president. This presidency simply cannot continue. Eddie, you get the last word. Look, three cs. Incompetence, corruption, all indications of his character. Hes a bad dude. He doesnt have a good sense of right and wrong. This moment, we saw it in Lafayette Park when he put the military in that position, and now we see that hes silent as someone puts a bounty on the head of our men and women in uniform. I think this breaks the back of his presidency with a particular constituency. Well see what happens come november, but this is a breaking point, in my view. Eddie, do you promise me you will come back and we will have a long conversation . Donna, you well have it with our regular virtual table about your book and what youve written and the moment in which youve released this book. I would love to. Thank you, nicole.
