The issues we care about, joe biden needs your vote. Today president obama will be making a special appeal to black men, voters who did not turn out in large enough numbers for Hillary Clinton four years ago. President trump is back at the white house today after a rally in erie, pennsylvania last night, telling a packed crowd of supporters he didnt have much of an interest in traveling there in the first place. Pennsylvania, you got to get out of if we win pennsylvania, we win the whole thing. Before the plague came in, i had it made. I wasnt coming to erie. To be honest, there was no way i was coming. I didnt have to. Now the plague, hello, erie. The tickets have been to the state nearly a dozen times, President Trump narrowly winning pennsylvania by just 44,000 votes. A state that had not gone republican since 1988. Ill also be joined today by House Speaker nancy pelosi in just a few moments for the latest on covid relief negotiations. And the new major hurdle thrown up by Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell. Lets begin with pennsylvania congresswoman madeleine dean, ed rendell, michael steele, and Washington Post National Political reporter and pennsylvania native robert costa. Thanks to all of you. Robert costa, lets start right here in pennsylvania with you, a big picture of this race, this date. Its so critical for both campaigns. How are the candidates and the campaigns approaching the final stretch . Andrea, youre a hero to many people in philadelphia for the part of your career spent there, youre still a favorite in the streets of philadelphia. Im glad governor rendell is with us because his ability to win as governor after being mayor of philadelphia shows how important it is for biden so many years later. He has to have a strong turnout in philadelphia, better than secretary clinton did in 2016. He needs to eat into that quiet support for trump in the suburbs around philadelphia that we saw in 2016, because President Trump may still have enormous turnout in western and central pennsylvania. So going to scranton, northeastern side of the state, getting the democrats back, make sure the suburban voter and even some moderate republicans go to biden, that will be the calculus, thats the way he wins. Congresswoman dean, bob costa just set us up. You flipped a house seat that had been firmly republican for a decade. What makes you think this can happen again this year for joe biden . What about suburban voters, what about the women . First of all, welcome back, you are so beloved here, welcome back to your philadelphia roots. What were seeing in montgomery and berks county, where i represent the 4th congressional district, were going to be the keystone state again. This election is running through pennsylvania. And what were seeing is enthusiasm is high. Last night, we tried something new. We tried a drivethrough town hall, or drivein, like a drivein theater, town hall at Montgomery County community college. We had a packed parking lot full of horns beeping and folks flashing their lights in enthusiasm for this election cycle and they issues that matter. Were also seeing extraordinary participation in mailin balloting. A quarter million mailin ballots have been requested here in Montgomery County. The edge is decidedly democrats. And we have a 90,000person vote democratic edge in terms of democratic registration in Montgomery County. Southeastern pennsylvania will be critical. The bidens are from here, theyre beloved. Joe biden is from scranton, dr. Jill biden from willow grove, my very own district. I think pennsylvania will be the key to this election and to a biden win. Ed rendell, you and i go way back. Just four years ago on election day, we were in a live interview, youre the former governor, the former mayor here, the former d. A. , former party chair nationally. And just four years ago, you told me you didnt like the way the votes were turning out in the suburbs. I said, wait a second, if theyre not turning out for Hillary Clinton, you could lose pennsylvania. And you said, thats right, paraphrasing our conversation. What are you seeing this year for joe biden that might make a difference . Well, joe biden, trump won by 180,000 votes. Joe biden is running 23, 24, 25 ahead. Hell pick up an additional 100, 120,000vote margin in the suburb. That alone would swing the state. But joe will do better in the northeast, in scranton and wilkesbarre. He wont win wilkesbarre. Heal w hell win scranton. Hell do better than hillary did. Joe is cutting 4 or 5 off the trump margin in those rural counties. That and increased voting in the suburbs should be enough to win more than Hillary Clinton. But again, it all depends on turnout. It all depends on turnout. When you talk about turnout, michael steele, you were Republican Party chair as opposed to the Lieutenant Governor of maryland, of course. Among the key groups that president obama is tasked with reaching are young voters. Obama voters its a noisy square here around city hall black american men may not have the same enthusiasm for joe biden but have been impacted by the black lives matter movement. President obama is going to try to reach out to them here today. Do you think hes going to have an impact . I think so. Just by way of connection, i too have pennsylvania connections, when i was stationed there as part of the augustinian seminary. This is a wonderful pennsylvania panel, always good to see ed. But yeah, i think obama can have an important countermessage, if you will, to what youre seeing by the president s effort to peel off black men with a narrative that quite honestly is disingenuous on so many levels. I think that the goal right now to the Governors Point is how you shave off what you can in the suburbs, and joe biden, and i said this over a year ago, has that ability to pull back from the president those parts of the electorate that democrats always rely on. If biden can do that in the suburbs, shave off 5 or 6 of that vote, and shore it up with voters who care a lot about issues like health care. Having former president obama a part of the narrative is a good thing for joe biden in affirming and cementing those votes in those cities [ inaudible ]. And robert costa, i got a sense of the enthusiasm, the attitude of democratic voters in philadelphia from bob brady yesterday, a former long time congressman who is the party chair right here. Whats going to happen two weeks from now . Well, the president says bad things happen in philadelphia. Hes so right. A very bad thing is going to happen to him in philadelphia. Were going to clean his clock. Hes going to have a major problem in the state of pennsylvania and well do our part. And robert, it is all turnout. Its a pandemic, people are afraid. Democrats are spooked by the registration edge in new registrations, more than two to one republican advantage over democrats since june. Do you think thats a real cause for worry, or was earlier democratic registration in 2018, 2019, more than making up for it . It is a significant issue for democrats. And when congressman brady says hes going to clean President Trumps clock in the city of philadelphia, my response as a reporter would be, whats your number going to be, congressman brady, coming out of philly . Because philly is one of the last cities in the country that really has a democratic machine. It disappointed some democrats in 2016. Can congressman brady and others who are still part of that Philadelphia Democratic apparatus put it together, make sure the votes are there in all of the different precincts . Because you see for President Trump, despite the challenges and his mistakes and failures on the pandemic, he has a lot of support with his core voters. And ive been interviewing pennsylvania voters for the past two weeks. I dont see a lot of his supporters in the west and central part of pennsylvania fading away from him. Mayor rendell i believe is right. Its not at the level perhaps that it was at 2016 for this total outsider for these low propensity independent and republican voters. But that machine has to be there in philly to compete with the enthusiasm and the registration in the other parts of the state. And congresswoman dean, when you talk about enthusiasm, what about you said you saw it out in Montgomery County, and understandably, thats european a fairly liberal area. But there are other counties in the suburbs here who are more republican. And perhaps not that taken with joe biden. Well, ill tell what you. In terms of registration and participation, the recent numbers of higher registration for republicans in the last several months, im not surprised by that. But theyre trying to play catchup. For the past four years. And especially the past two years, democratic Voter Registration is way up. Ill dwgive you an example. Just this weekend in a get out the vote event in conshohocken, a met a woman who personally over the last year or more has registered 1,509 voters. One woman, single handed i did. Democrats have been at this for a very long time. In terms of participation, in Montgomery County, i worry too, like governor rendell just said, about participation. It all depends on the vote. Do you know that in 2018, as a reaction to 2016, Montgomery County had the highest Voter Participation of all 67 counties . We had record president iallevel participation. I think were going to have that and then some this time around, and that is true in many of these surrounding suburban counties, many of whom in 2018 flipped wards to democrats. And michael steele, before we lose you, i wanted to take note of your political ad, this is a first for you. How hard was it for you to make that ad and what kind of feedback are you getting from your friends in the Republican Party . Thank you, andrea. It was a journey. It was an introspective one, one that i think a lot of americans have made over the last few years as they look to the character of the individual they want to sit in the oval office. That mattered more to me than any Supreme Court appointment, any tax cut, because it spoke to, at least for me and i hope for a lot of americans, to who we are at citizens. I want to fight democrats like my friend ed rendell and the congresswoman on the ideas and the policies that touch on the lives of people. I dont want to fight them over being an american or what it means to be an american. We know what that is for each of us. And i thought joe biden in this moment, at this time for our country, was the better man to sit behind that desk in the oval office. So im all in. Lets do this, lets take the fight to the streets and not literally, people, but lets have this big debate about, you know, the big ideas. But first lets settle on who we are as citizens. And i think thats going to be an important first step to the healing the country needs on the other side, on civil unrest, the economy, and all of it. I cant thank you enough, michael steele, congresswoman dean, governor rendell, what can i say, and michael steele, of course, and robert costa, thanks to all of you. Its a great homecoming for me to have all of you with me, thanks so much. Coming up, deal or no deal . This even though the speaker said yesterday that her talks with treasury secretary mnuchin had helped achieve, quote, Common Ground and moved closer to an agreement. Joining me now is speaker of the house nancy pelosi, madam speaker, thank you very much for joining us today. I want to ask you, where do we stand . Because you were notably optimistic, even though the time is so short, your deadline has come and gone, but that talks were going well with treasury secretary mnuchin. But now were hearing this from the majority leader. Whats going on . Well, thank you. Im pretty happy. I think we have a prospect for an agreement. I do not believe that our timetable has come and gone. We had a purpose in the timetable which is that we would establish where we were, freeze the design on your position, no more discussion about nah nah nah, what is your position. That is what we are coming to conclusion about now. There is some delay on the part of republicans about the appropriations piece of it. I hope that will be resolved. The secretary will be back in conversation with us later today and hopefully that will be resolved. So its just a question, then, of weighing the equities. Is this worth that. But we do need more money. And we needed it to be spent in a way to crush the virus. And they finally have arrived at that, after all these months. And we have more that we can do. My view is that theres no reason that americas schools shouldnt be the safest place in america for our children to go to learn. It takes some money. More classes, more teachers, more ventilation, more technology and the rest. It takes not that much more money to make it safe. Children can go to school, children learning, parents earning, parents can go to work. And if not, we have to have more childcare. And thats part of our discussion right now. But im optimistic, because even with what Mitch Mcconnell says, we dont want to do it before the election, but lets keep working so that we can do it after the election. We want to before. But again, i want people to know, help is on the way, it will be bigger, it will be better, it will be safer, and it will be retroactive. Let me ask you this. The president has said he wants an even bigger deal than the democrats and he acknowledges not every republican agrees with him but he said they will. What are you hearing . Are you confident the president is going to go along with what you and secretary mnuchin are talking about . Well, i wouldnt even be having these discussions if we didnt think the president had some sway as to whether the senate would take this legislation up. The election is coming soon. We know that the new congress and new president are just 2 1 2 months away. We dont want to wait that long. We want to get something done for the American People as soon as possible. Our bill is over five months old. They finally came to the table. And i think that, well, its up to the president to convince people in his own party, but you have to also remember how hard that is because some of them really dont care to spend any more money to crush the virus, to make our schools safe, to honor our heroes, to put money in the pockets of the American People that is so needed. But again, im optimistic that there will be a bill. Its a question of, is it in time to pay the november rent, which is my goal, or is it going to be shortly thereafter and retroactive. So again, were in a better place than we have been. And the goal that we had for up until last night was for us to stake out our positions so that its no more movement, and then, again, come to an agreement. Im optimistic. And i know the staff had been working on actual language for the last couple of days, so youve gotten a head start, thats a big lift. Have you gotten anywhere on being obstacles like state and local government which was so important to you and the democrats in congress. Yes, still is. And which the president is railing against, frankly. A couple of things that are still outstanding are of course the amount we would spend on state and local, honoring our heroes, our health care workers, first responders, police and fire, food workers, sanitation, transportation, our teachers, our teachers, our teachers. Well being of or schools depends on allocation for covid but also on how we support state and local government, where most of the money for education comes from. That affects almost about everything, health, transportation, and the rest, that make our lives function. And then the other book end to that is liability, where theyre sending essential workers to work, if they dont go, they cant get unemployment insurance, they could be in a dangerous situation, have no recourse, if the osha standards are not kept. Safe schools, safe workplace. These are values. Theyre not issues. Theyre not traditions. Theyre values. One other challenge that we still have is about how we treat restaurants and small this has merged since five months ago, the restaurants and the small venues. Additional help for restaurants. We had that before. And thats something ill be talking to the secretary about when he comes in at 2 30. Not to give his schedule, hes not coming in at 2 30, but thats when well be talking. None of it is insurmountable if you want to make a decision. And as he says to me and as i say to him, why would i even be talking to you if we didnt think we could reach a decision and agreement. And by the way, crush the virus, crush the virus, crush the virus. Its long overdue. Look whats happening in our country. Finally they have agreed that they would recognize the disparity in the communities of color, that the toll that this is taking, more people of color are dying from covid than white people. A child who is 5 years old excuse me, a black child has five times more chance of going to hospital with covid than a white child. An hispanic child, eight times more chance. As a mom, you know, a grandmother, that to me is the most convincing argument that we have to crush the virus. I also want to ask you about a report in the New York Times based on the tax records they obtained from the president s tax records, that a chinese bank account linked to President Trump, an account he did not disclose on his public financial disclosures, exists. And this is Bank Accounts in china, to my understanding, are part of the government, theyre not private entities. Youve said the president s reported debt is a National Security matter. What do you make of this even tighter connection, according to the New York Times, with money from china that he has been taking out of his bank account . This is news to all of us. But it isnt shocking, because the president has always been projecting his own shortcomings or his own exposure, his own vulnerability, on others. He starts projecting onto the bidens, oh, you have connections to china, when he has the connection to china. And my concern is not just about who he owes the money to, but where hes going to get the money to may it back. And again, we mentioned the state involvement in banks in china. They can watch the flow of money there and perhaps have some, shall we say, sway over the person who is taking money or putting money into that account. So it is a National Security issue. Shame on the president if he has a bank account in china. And no surprise that he would be projecting his own vulnerability on to other people. Im sure theres more to come on this. Thats why it has always been important to see the president s tax returns, not in terms of how rich he is and the rest, okay, he misrepresents that, but what else is new. But the fact is, what is the source of those funds and what is the obligation of them. And thats a National Security matter. Madam speaker, i want to ask you about politics here in philadelphia, in pennsylvania, president obama is coming later today. They really need to get out the democratic vote here in philadelphia, to sort of offset President Trumps strength in wilkesbarre and other rural regions, in coal country. So what are your expectations for pennsylvania . Because it really is an allimportant state now for both sides. Im so happy that youre there, part of history, as president obama returns to philadelphia to campaign for joe biden, who is from pennsylvania. I look at that, thats so exciting, oh, my. In any event how lovely. In any event, i can only speak for today. Today we would win the white house, the United States senate, and the house of representatives. But we assume nothing. We put one good day in front of another. No wasted time, no underutilized resources, and no regrets the day after the election that we should have done more as we experienced in 2016. Lesson brutally learned. So im optimistic, but again, im optimistic because i know that all the work will continue. About one fifth of the people have already voted, if we have 150 million vote, which would be a big vote. So say its 160, then nearly one fifth of the people have already voted. And thats a beautiful thing for our country, our sacred right, our civic duty to do. So i guess i would say, again, from 16, we all hesitate to make absolute predictions. But i would just say, for today, its a big victory for the democrats. I know we will increase our numbers in the house, not because its a swing of the pendulum but because we have excellent candidates, wonderful members of Congress Running for reelection. Weve mobilized at the grassroots level. Weve messaged in a way that is not menacing but bold and progressive. And we have the money to get the job done under leadership of our chair sherry bustos. I always like to be ready weeks in advance. Im a former chair of the party, i thrive on politics and the campaign, so im watching this all very closely. Just win, dont agonize. I say, we dont agonize, we organize, and thats what were doing. And thank you very much for helping us organize right here on this program. Thank you, my pleasure. Thank you. Here in pennsylvania coronavirus cases are of course on the rise, the speaker has been pointing out the problem nationally. The state here now averaging more than a thousand new daily cases. A 44 increase in the last two weeks, reaching april levels now after the outbreak was under control before. Joining me now is dr. Zeke emanuel, a member of dr. Jill bidens task force and a former Health Policy adviser in the obama administration. Zeke, thanks very much for being with us. Lets talk about the surge now, obviously wisconsin and north dakota, really big problems there. But even here in the northeast, being hit hard by the pandemic once again. To what do you attribute it . I think everyone attributes it partially to the weather, partially to the opening up, especially of indoor venues. And those are you know two factors that are long been predicted to make a difference. You know, its inevitable that in colder climates, as were seeing, wisconsin, minnesota, north dakota, south dakota, as well as, as you point out, the parts of the northeast, its still pretty low in places like new hampshire, vermont, maine. When you have High Community rates and then cold putting people inside, you do get a bigger spread. We know the four things that lead to spread. Going inside, large crowds, prolonged period of time, sneezing, coughing, yelling. And unfortunately thats whats happening in the fall and it will happen big time at thanksgiving unless people suspend, unfortunately, their thanksgiving celebrations with family. Weve got two weeks to go before the election. A pretty big distinction between the two campaign strategies. Joe biden is down in debate prep but has also not been campaigning with large rallies, obviously. Youre advising the Biden Campaign on covid. Theyre doing very Different Campaign events tonight. President obama will be here, it will be a drivein event, versus the Trump Campaign in erie. So what are the risks that President Trump is engendering . It is outdoors, but people are close together and theres an absence of masks. So i think youre 100 right. You really have the Biden Campaign, which is trying to model the Public Health measures, distance, limit the number of people, wear face masks. So thats, you know, listening to the scientists and the medical doctors. And youve got President Trump who flounced the mask, calls the people names for wearing masks, assembling large crowds for prolonged periods of time, many of those people without masks, even though it is outdoors, theres a big risk. Theyre literally Standing Shoulder to shoulder, grasping each other, talking to each other, yelling, which spews out lots of potential virus particles, if anyone is infected. And we have to worry seriously that these are potential super spreading events. And, you know, hes holding them in florida, arizona, pennsylvania, places that hes campaigning and also places often with large groups of older people, which has to make us worry, because theyre the most vulnerable to this virus. So its two starkly different approaches, one informed by science and Public Health and the other just ignoring those recommendations in favor of trying to generate excitement around his campaign. Well see in the debate tomorrow how those very different points of view play out as well as, of course, at the polls. Can i make one statement, andrea . Yes, go ahead. Thats about voting in person. I know a lot of people are, you know, agonizing, do i go down to vote . I will tell you my mother herself is agonizing about that. Voting in person is about as safe as going to the grocery store. You wait outside, six feet apart, wearing a mask, that should be fine. Youre going to be indoors for a very short period of time to vote. Many places, including pennsylvania, the machines are disinfected, people are using a pencil eraser to vote, it should be pretty safe. I dont think you should agonize that much. Your vote is important. [ inaudible ]. Zeke emanuel, dr. Zeke, thanks very much, thanks for that. And ready for a courtroom fight. Com its all about the numbers, getting out the vote, key for both campaigns here in pennsylvania. Msnbc National Political correspondent Steve Kornacki is at the big board for a deeper dive. Steve, what can you tell us, whats the state of play . New poll here, bottom line in pennsylvania, trump running from behind here, down 7 points in the usa today suffolk poll in pennsylvania. But weve been talking about it, the importance of pennsylvania to the president s chances to get to 270 electoral votes and get reelected. Lets take a look at the road to 270. This is what happened in 2016. And remember, pennsylvania was one of those three midwest states, pennsylvania, michigan, and wisconsin. Trump won all of them. They had all been democratic for three decades before. And all of them, trumps winning margin was within a point. These were his narrowest conv e victories here in these three midwest states. Pennsylvania is the one Trumps Campaign thinks they have the best chance of hanging on to. They need to, because if joe biden were to get pennsylvania, michigan, and wisconsin, if he flips those three states, hes over 270. Trump falls under 270 if he cant hang on to one of those three states. You see the effort Trumps Campaign is putting in pennsylvania. If he can find a way to hang on in pennsylvania, for the moment he would get back to 270. He would then have to shore up a bunch of other states. But the simplest path to presidency for biden is get pennsylvania, get michigan, get wisconsin. If nothing else changes, he wouldnt need anything more than that, andrea. Thats all pretty amazing. And just briefly, the poll numbers here, they have been pretty thin, and im told privately that the party polls are even smaller Single Digits than what were seeing publicly. Yeah, definitely. And also seeing if you look inside the numbers here, in the public poll, the gender gap in pennsylvania. Check this out from the new poll here, bidens lead among women here now nearly 20 points in pennsylvania. Also by the way trumps advantage among men down from what it was in 2016 at least in this poll here. But talk about trump, that effort hes been making with suburban women, think of the suburbs of philadelphia, trump has to do well enough there. Biden with an advantage in particular among female voters in pennsylvania right now. Thanks so much, Steve Kornacki, well be seeing a lot of you, thank goodness. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court handed pennsylvania democrats a major victory this week because of a 44 tie, letting a state Court Decision stay which allows latearriving absentee ballots to arrive for three days after election day. Joining us is attorney general job shapiro, general shapiro, this was a big victory for you, but it emphasizes how much President Trump is upset about this. Look what he had to say yesterday about this ruling on fox news. Pennsylvania is pretty even. We got a ruling yesterday that was ridiculous where they can count ballots after the election is over. What does that mean, well wait until after november 3 and start announcing states . Its crazy. We got a strange ruling from the Supreme Court yesterday, it was very strange. But i think were doing great. So denouncing john roberts, the chief justice, his own political party. Obviously the importance of the Supreme Court nominee getting confirmed we believe next week, its going to make a big difference. Andrea, first off, its good to have you back in the city of brotherly love and sisterly affection, i know you know it well. The president calls things ridiculous, he can tweet up a storm, he can make up lies about whats going on in pennsylvania. When we go to court, you can only go to court if you have facts and evidence on your side. So far, notwithstanding these ridiculous president ial tweets, the president has got a big fat [ inaudible ]. Its oh for three. [ inaudible ]. Thats because the court sees through his efforts to try and undermine the vote here in pennsylvania, to actually try and make it harder for people to vote. And that is that it is baseless. Theres no evidence to back up the ridiculous claims that he made. And what i want the people of pennsylvania to do and what those people are doing seemingly lining up behind you, is make a plan to vote and make. And just ignore the noise coming from this president. Hes doing this, andrea, for a very specific reason. Hes trying to create this chaos and sow doubt in our process to make people feel powerless, to make it feel like maybe their voice isnt going to be heard, that their vote wont count. What i find pretty remarkable here in pennsylvania, not just in philadelphia but all across the commonwealth, is that the noise that the president has been trying to make through his tweets and otherwise is now really just being drowned out by the voice of the voters. Were seeing Record Number of voters ask for mailin ballots, return them quickly, and theyre making a plan to vote. This isnt the only legal issue i know youve been battling. Republican lawsuits, one in particular about alleged poll watchers, even before early voting had started. And theres concern, i talked to the head of the black clergy here, reverend Robert Collier yesterday, theyre trying to tell people just be firm and make sure you vote, get the signature right, get the envelope right if youre mailing it in, also dont let people intimidate you. Exactly. Look, reverend collier is right. Ive talked to him and his fellow black clergy about this many times. I want to make very clear, voter intimidation is illegal, and its illegal for a reason. We want to make sure people have access to the polls and that their voice will be heard. We will not tolerate it from anyone. We certainly are not going to tolerate it from the president. You brought up these poll watchers which fits into this, because we have had a law on the books since 1937 in pennsylvania, andrea, which says that poll watchers have to follow certain rules and have to come from the county where they live. The president sued to try to change those rules, to allow poll watchers to come in from other counties in pennsylvania. While that may seem somewhat innocuous on its face, what its really designed to do is intimidate voters in predominantly black and brown communities. There in philadelphia where you are and across other areas of pennsylvania. Im simply not going to stand for that. I wont allow it. And thats why weve beaten the president in court multiple times on this issue. Our laws will stand here in pennsylvania. If you want to be a poll watcher, you have to follow certain rules. You have to be from the community where youre watching the poll. You damn well better not intimidate a voter because if you do, it will be met with Swift Response from my office and law enforcement. Attorney general josh shapiro, really a pleasure to have you here today, thanks so very much. Good to be with you. In just a few hours, the most popular democrat in the city is coming to the city in the hopes of boosting the Biden Campaign in his key state. Obama has 91 favorable ratings among democrats in a morning console poll. 58 favorable ratings with all voters. Ahead of tonights drive in rally the former president released a video aimed at young voters. One of the most inspiring things about this year has been to see so many Young Americans fired up, organizing, marching and fighting for change. This is really a tipping point, and that momentum only continues if we win this election. Joining me now, robert gibbs, former whoubs press secretary under president obama. Robert, so president obama has a big task here because voting has you know, as you saw 4 years ago not been what they need. What does he have to do today in philly . I think he does a couple of things important for joe biden. One is a character reference as a leader and as Vice President. And he can speak to the man and father and husband that he is in a way thats powerful and differentiating with donald trump. But i do think as you said he speaks to those young voters and speaks to black voters, important demographic sets that the Biden Campaign has to get active and out to vote very quickly here in this race. So i think hes the most popular democrat that will be out there in the field this year campaigning. Its an important lift for joe biden as were less than 2 weeks from the election. After starting in a big deficit the Biden Campaign is now flush with cash way out in front of the Trump Campaign. One demonstration of this was an ad they ran in the world series opener calling on the country to come together. There is only one america, no democratic rivers, no republican mountains, just this great land. With the sam elliott voiceover and beautiful pictures, it was almost a mini ken burns documentary. It was a beautiful ad but it cost a lot of money. Theres no doubt about that, and we all wish we had that voiceover. I think whats important about that ad, and i think youll hear a lot about this in the debate. The message in that ad last night is the same message he started this campaign with in philadelphia, about the soul of america and bringing this country together. Its been the thread thats pulled this entire race through. That doesnt always happen on cam paps. So thats important. Robert, can he transfer, you know, his popularity to joe biden . I dont think its as easy as just picking it up and moving it over, but i do think as youre sitting there wondering if youre a voter that thinks theres something important or at stake in this election, if youre wondering whether or not youre going to stand in line or take the time to vote early, i think hes a great character reference for the Vice President on so many different levels. I think he can get voters energized and activated. I think they can remember a bit what they used to have in a president. And i think while not directly transferrable, all of that will generate important excitement for the Vice President. And very briefly, you dont think that joe biden is making a mistake in going down for debate prep and not campaigning actively in these last two weeks . No. Look, i think thursdays event is the largest single event left on the election calendar before election day. 75 mill yb people will tune into that debate, and thats an appearance and a debate you want to do well in. Its the last chance that donald trump has to change the trajectory of this race. So being prepared and being ready is far more important than being out on the trail at this point. Robert gibbs, its so good to see you. Thanks so much for being with us on this special day. Thats it for a special edition of Andrea Mitchell reports.
