And global stocks follow u. S. Markets higher after signs of a strong christmas retail season. But there are warning signs for the president bubbling under the surface. The New York Times notes there are economic warning signs for President Trump in the midwest related to manufacturing numbers in states that are key to his reelection. The times also points out that President Trumps trade deals raise rather than remove economic barriers and that thats a significant shift in trade policy. And the outlook for farmers isnt as rosy as team trump hopes to convey. I want to bring in heather long, chris lu, and anna egerton. Welcome to all of you. Heather, let me start with you. All week ive been talking about these recordbreaking stock markets, the percentage gains on the dow, the nasdaq, the s p 500, which are the best since 1997 or so, depending on what happens in the next few days may even be stronger. You combine that with a gdp growth rate thats not bad. And someone who didnt look under the hood would say, this is fantastic. Ten years without a recession. And im inundated on twitter by people who say, i dont know where you live or what world youre in but that doesnt feel like my world. If you have 3. 5 unemployment, you should be able to have workers feeling like its their world because they should be able to demand higher wages. And we havent seen that happen as we typically would have in an otherwise Strong Economy like this. Youre right, ali. The good news is the wages for the lowestearning workers are increasing. So people earning 10, 11, 12 an hour are seeing some of the biggest gains. But those gains are not happening as well for the hidel class. What strikes me time and time again as i travel the country is people tell me, yes, this is a pretty good economy, yes, i can get a job, but im still struggling to get a good job. And i was struck recently, the pugh poll data showing that 69 of americans say that most of the benefits of the economy are going to the wealthy. So we see this dichotomy, people are saying, yes, people are better than ten years ago, even five years ago in the economy, but they dont necessarily feel the benefits are reaching enough of the middle and working class. And thats going to be a real struggle for President Trump on the campaign trail, to reiterate how his policies have been reaching the work people. Chris, 12 years ago we would have said and economists and journalists would have said that the intractable problem in our time in the United States and most of the developed world was unemployment, how do you get it low. We always thought at 5 , people are really, really competitive and doing well. Now were at 3. 5 . That was supposed to solve the problem of people who dont feel like theyre participating in an economy. Whats your explanation for how you end up at 3. 5 and you have so many we have 40 Million People in this country, foodinsecure. 500,000 people sleep on the streets every night in america. We have people taking multiple jobs because they cant make ends meet in a country with 3. 5 unemployment. Thats exactly right. Unemployment is 3. 5 . We also have an underemployment problem in this country. People arent getting the jobs they need not only to pay off student loan debts but to really make a difference in terms of retirement savings. This is the tale of two economies right now. We have the super wealthy that have done incredibly well in part because of a 1. 5 trillion tax break theyve gotten from this president. Then weve got the vast majority of people who are basically living with economic instability and insecurity. You see that in a variety of other data points, whether its income inequality which is at historic highs, whether its the number of People Without Health Insurance which is rising after falling during the obama administration. Consumer debt levels are now at prerecession levels. Wages have been stagnant. This is part of the challenge, as heather just said, yes, if you look at all the metrics the economy does seem to be doing well. But for far too many people in this country, theyre not getting ahead. Labor force participation has basically not budged. Only 63 of working age people are in the labor force right now. Anna, when you look at the people who chris is talking about on the sidelines, when you look at people who work in the gig economy, when you look at people in the midwest who were told, by the way, by donald trump, dont sell your homes because its all going to be good, manufacturing is coming back, when you look at people in western pennsylvania and kentucky and West Virginia who were told their coal jobs are coming back, very few of which have come back, this top line number about gdp growth and unemployment and a record stock market doesnt touch them. So weve gone ten years without a recession and you have people who feel like their lives have been in recession for the last ten years. Thats right. And well definitely see how that plays out in the message that President Trump presents to American Voters next year. Like chris was saying, this economy has benefitted really the most wealthy, the 172 billionaires in the United States added 500 billion to their fortunes last year. So you see the unevenness of the economic growth. Thats the story of the next president ial race. Democrats and republicans will present divisions on how to close that gap to spread the wealth more evenly across the country. Thats what the issue is, there is no shortage of wealth, theres no shortage of resources. There doesnt even seem to be much of a shortage of jobs in america. Its how it touches people. So we are looking at tax cuts that this administration brought in that may have goosed this economy to the point were seeing the stock market gains and gdp growth, but we have lower tax revenue certainly from Corporate America than we ever had before that cut. We have a higher deficit. That doesnt seem to animate people as much as the idea that there were tax cuts and they goosed the economy. I think youre right. Obviously republicans struggled to run on those tax cuts in 2018. But President Trump seems to realize that he needed more than tax cuts. And a number of initiatives hes done in 2019 have been more populi populist, whether its trying to give more to workers through those trade negotiations hes done, or giving paid family leave to federal workers. Hes done a number of initiatives this year that are a little bit more populist in tone. The fundamental problem in this economy is middle class jobs are going away, whether its manufacturing or Administrative Assistant jobs, those jobs that pay 50, 60,000 a year, and theyre being replaced with super high end tech coding jobs that pay 100,000 or more or super low end jobs paying 30,000 or less. Thats a fundamental challenge for any lawmaker right now. And chris, andrew yang makes this point all the time, thats only going to get more serious as we get to more animation and more robotics and more ai. There are states in america where one of the biggest jobs is driving, and once we automate driving, there will be tens of millions of people in this country suddenly put out of work, maybe not so suddenly but over the course of five years or so, put out of work. Either we solve this problem now or its going to be worse for us as we go further on. Exactly right, ali. Its sort of two problems. Its the growing dichotomy between skilled and unskilled jobs. People who have skills, particularly for a technology economy, will do remarkably well. But a variety of people who do unskilled jobs that will still need to exist even after automation basically cant get by. Weve now been over ten years since the federal minimum wage has been raised, its still 7. 25 an hour. Fortunately states and cities are increasing it and many others will do that on january 1. The other dichotomy we have in this country is between urban and rural, where all of those economic gains are largely being concentrated in a small number of metropolitan areas. When you go to midwestern and rural states where manufacturing sectors are in a recession, theres not a great answer that politicians on either side have given to those people. And anna, theyll be called upon to give better answers. Donald trump himself had some of the top line issues, trade itself resulted in people losing jobs and manufacturing has faultered in america. Some points he had right but he doesnt have an answer for them. Does he actually have to have something that addresses the issues of working class americans who are watching themselves fall behind while society as a whole, stock markets as a whole, gdp as a whole, all increase . Thats a challenge not just for candidates but for policymakers. The perfect example of that is the renegotiation of nafta, the usmca as President Trump calls it, that the house of representatives passed just this month. You see how a lot of the changes to the economy that were made in the early 90s after nafta are already baked in. Now the challenge for policymakers is to figure out how to rework that kind of trade deal to make it better for American Workers so that they can stem some of those losses going forward. Its going to be really interesting to see how democrats treat this issue compared with President Trump, since hes kind of taken their talking point in being the one to attack these kind of free trade deals. Anna, thank you, anna egerton, heather long, and chris lu, i appreciate you having this conversation that well have to keep on having for a long time until we get it right. Coming up, with the impeachment fight looming over the holiday break, President Trump is not letting up on his twitter attacks on naps and republicans are taking note. Nbcs joe fryer is following this story from los angeles. Joe, what do we know about this . Ali, right now it is sunrise in hawaii. The coast guard says it will be resuming its search at first light this morning. We just got information from the coast guard telling us crews will be searching on the air and water and more resources will be coming in to help with that search over the next couple of hours. Theyll be looking not just at the water but also at inland canyons. This tour helicopter disappeared yesterday on the island of kauai. It was due back last night from a tour of the islands na pali coast. On board the green and white helicopter, one pilot and six passengers, including two minors. Officials say that there is an electronic locator on that helicopter but no signals have been received yet on that locator. Coast guard Officials Say the weather conditions are challenging, visibility is fairly low, winds today are forecast to be at around 28 miles per hour, creating some waves in the water. Theres also scattered rain in the forecast. Of course the island of kauai is 80 uninhabited. Its mostly covered in state parks. So there is a lot of remote area there, ali. Joe, youll keep us posted if you get any new developments. Joe fryer covering this from los angeles for us. House republicans are taking cues from their commander in chief. This is totally backfiring on the democrats. And i think nancy pelosi let this get way out of in front of her. I think if she were really calling the shots, this couldnt have gone this far. We have to remember that the far left social justice democrats are running this party now. But we are seeing that trump is up in my home state of pennsylvania. Hes leading the democrat contenders sometimes by double digits. Hes up in wisconsin and michigan. And in all those battleground districts, the districts were democrats hold seats where trump run. You just mentioned cartwrights seat in central pennsylvania, i think well get a lot of those seats back in 2020. President trump has let loose a relentless string of twitter attacks on House Speaker nancy pelosi. Joining me now, washington posts anne gearan and Karen Tumulty. Karen, theres nothing that donald trump is tweeting that should come as a surprise to anyone. Hes taken exception to these proceedings and Nancy Pelosis role in it from the beginning. Why would it now be turned into a Political Tool for republicans . I think that its going to be really critical to see how the democrats handle this over the next few weeks after everybody gets back to washington from the christmas break. The fact is that the public is very, very deeply divided on the question of impeachment. Its almost even between people who think the president should have been impeached and in fact should be removed from office and those who think he shouldnt. As we move into the senate trial phase of this, i think its going to be very critical that the democrats not be seen as sort of dragging their feet. I think its becoming very much in their interests to sort of get this behind them. Anne, whats your sense from the white house . On the one hand it seems the president wants to be acquitted, wants to be totally exonerated by the senate. Hes got a better chance of being exonerated if theres a fairer trial than the one weve been hearing the senate is planning on having. The president is going to look to go from those depths into a place in which republicans have a chance of taking back the house in 2020 because of his impeachment process. Is that fanciful thinking . Not necessarily, ali. The president wants a few things, probably still wants them. The best we can tell from our reporting, thats not going to get them here, including a longer and more detailed trial, calling witnesses whom he thinks would either exonerate him or make the democrats look bad. We know that Mitch Mcconnell doesnt want to do that. And he would like to have, you know, as big a show out of it as possible. That seems very unlikely to happen. And although we dont know when it will start, i think that mcconnells basic view that this should be, you know, as smallbore as possible in order to make the entire proceedings look insignificant, is the strategy thats winning out, and the president has come around to it. He still, however, feels that the entire process is terribly unfair to him and he is you know, nothing if not a fighter, right . He wants a chance to throw a few punches. And i think youre seeing some of that in his twitter feed. Karen, what do you make of the fact that there are in fact republican moderates like lisa murkowski, Susan Collins, maybe mitt romney, cory gardner, maybe some others, who are thinking at least the senate trial needs to look fair so it doesnt come back to bite republicans. Some republicans think this is still damaging to republicans amongst moderate voters. Mitch mcconnell knows his most endangered senators are ones running essentially in purple states. They are going to need the votes of moderates and maybe even some democrats for people like Susan Collins and Martha Mcsally and potentially cory gardner in colorado to survive. So yes, they do need this process to be seen as fair. Again, i think the pressure, though, is for it to also be expeditious. Were now 37 days away from the iowa caucuses. And there will be Something Like five Democratic Senators who are also president ial candidates who do not want to be sitting there six days a week, silent, in a Senate Impeachment trial. Anne, lets talk a little bit about the speculation surrounding mike pompeo who wants to run for a senate seat from his home state of california. There are rumors swirling about who might replace him. The post says robert obrien, steve mnuchin, maybe even senators marco rubio and tom cott cotton. Do you have a sense of the likely timing . Off i dont have a sense of timing with great precision. Frankly there is a long lead time here, should pompeo choose to drag this out, he could. He doesnt actually have to say hes running for that senate seat until next june. I do expect, if hes going to pull that trigger and it looks increasingly likely that he will, i would expect that he will not wait anywhere near that long. He now has a senateconfirmed deputy who could step in in an acting capacity. If the white house wants to go ahead and try to get a senateconfirmed full replacement as secretary of state, that is going to compete with a lot of other business in the senate and a lot of other attention and, you know, brain space at the white house. But now that theres a deputy, a full deputy in place, they would have a little lead time. The names you mentioned are definitely the shorter list, and probably robert obrien, who has had a meteoric rise in the administration, is a good candidate. Karen, i always wonder about names like marco rubio because the president has not done well with people around him who have typically been critical. In this case, after a rough ride with tillerson, he has enjoyed his relationship with pompeo. Pompeo and barr are prototypes for what trump seems to like in his cabinet. It seems at a time when donald trump would want some stability, it seems like a difficult transition for him to lose a guy like pompeo who has at every opportunity backed the president up. And i think thats why annes scenario is the most likely one. We also have a president who likes people to have the word acting in front of their job title. Mick mulvaney is still not the white house chief of staff. Right. So i think that rather than having a huge confirmation fight in an Election Year that would bring up all the things that republicans would like to get behind them with regard to the president and ukraine, i think that putting a senateconfirmed deputy in place until probably after the election is probably the strategy that both the president and his party would prefer at this point. Thanks to both of you for joining me today, anne gearan and Karen Tumulty from the washington post, thanks to both of you. Coming up, new controversy surrounding the navy s. E. A. L. Who was accused of killing an isis militant, a case President Trump has personally been involved in. At fidelity, we make sure you have a clear plan to cover the essentials in retirement, as well as all the things you want to do. Because when youre ready for what comes next, the only direction is forward. You have a brother in [the second battalion . Yes sir. Theyre walking into a trap. Your orders are to deliver a message calling off tomorrows attack. If you fail we will lose sixteen hundred men. Your brother among them. We need to keep moving. Come on theres only one way this war ends. Last man standing. There is news this morning on a case we followed closely involving retired navy s. E. A. L. Eddie gallagher. Nbc correspondent kate snow has more. This past summer, ali, gallagher was acquitted of killing civilians and an isis fighter. But this morning the New York Times exclusively obtained navy interface with the s. E. A. L. Team members who had accused gallagher of misconduct. We want to warn you, some of what you are about to see and hear is disturbing. I saw eddie take a shot at probably a 12yearold kid. Reporter this morning, tapes never before seen in public, members of the s. E. A. L. Team speaking on camera in the spring of 2018 about their platoon leader Eddie Gallagher. The guy got crazier and crazier. Reporter part of a trove of information obtained exclusively by the weekly. One after another, the platoon members come in and they paint a picture of a platoon leader who has gone totally rogue. They say that he was killing people just to kill them, men, women, children, it didnt matter. The guy was toxic. We cant let this continue. Reporter the timings reviewed hundreds of Text Messages they say were sent by gallagher, disparaging the se s s. E. A. L. S who reported to him. In the hopes that they will be black listed by other s. E. A. L. S. Reporter the video shows the isis fighter prosecutors accused gallagher of murdering. Gallagher is seen with a medic bag pushing him. Then the camera goes black. Its not clear why. You say he stabbed him one time, multiple times . Reporter s. E. A. L. Team member cory scott told investigators he saw gallagher stab the isis fighter multiple times. It was probably two or three times. Just like a stab, about right here, a few times. Is there any possible way that what he was doing could be interpreted as for medical purposes to help this guy . No. There is no way this was anything other than to attack and to kill this person . No. Reporter but scott changed his story at gallaghers trial and said he was the one who killed the fighter. Did you suffocate him . Yes. Reporter Eddie Gallagher was convicted of posing for a photo with the corpse. He was found not guilty of murder and attempted murder and has long proclaimed his innocence. A couple of the members of the platoon had a personal animosity towards Eddie Gallagher. They didnt perform well in combat. They were afraid of being called out for being cowards. They made up a story. And they went with it. Reporter overnight, gallaghers attorney calling their accounts unsupported and fake. If there was a problem with chief gallaghers mental state, they would have examined him, they would have found that. There was none. Reporter in november, President Trump ordered the pentagon not to strip gallagher of his rank and trident pin. The Navy Secretary was fired for his handling of the case. The president publicly showing support for the navy s. E. A. L. Seal. He was a great fighter. He was one of the ultimate fighters. Tough guy. Reporter just this weekend, gallagher posting photos, meeting President Trump for the first time at maralago. The navy s. E. A. L. Seals and an attorney for cory scott are not commenting. Nbc news has not spoken with any of the individual s. E. A. L. S you saw in those interviews but the New York Times says its reached out to them and theyve all declined to comment in print or on camera. Gallaghers lawyer says he plans to file a lawsuit against the weekly and the New York Times. Those werent the only Text Messages. They reviewed hundreds of Text Messages between the people you just saw, the s. E. A. L. S reporting on gallagher. One of them says, were going to answer to a higher power some day and everything happens for a reason, not compromising our integrity and keeping right on our side is all we can do. Again, thats from one of the s. E. A. L. S who reported gallaghers behavior. Nbc news has not reviewed those Text Messages directly. What a complicated case. Kate, thank you, good to see you. I want to bring in retired fourstar admiral James Stavridis, msnbcs chief International Security and diplomacy analyst and the author of sailing true north ten admirals and the voyage of character. Admiral, good to see you. You and talked about this when it first developed. At that point it was about how the president engaged himself in the process and everybody did something that didnt stick to the way this was supposed to go. With this new information, what does it make you think . I want to start by saying, ali, to the american public, what they are seeing from start to finish here is not who their military is. 99. 99 of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who are forward are not caught up at all in this kind of behavior, so lets park that. In terms of the new information, i can only react to it as anyone would, which is to say when i watched those videos and i listened to the voices of the various s. E. A. L. S who reported chief gallagher to the ncis, it sounds credible to me. Its hard for me to come come h a reason that seven out of 20 member of the platoon, almost a third of them, came forward with very similar stories about behavior which we would find would at least require a deep investigation and a trial. So as a listened to the voices of those s. E. A. L. S, i hear credibility. Its hard for me to come up with another explanation for why so many would want to come forward knowing the consequences for them in this very tightknit community. Finally, ali, ill make another point, which is this is the kind of case classically that has to be handled by the military chain of command. This is where the s. E. A. L. S accused him, he was adjudged by a military jury, many of whom were special operators. They adjudicated it and came up with i think the appropriate punishment. I dont think it was a good move for President Trump to reach into that mix. In fact you wrote in an editorial last month for time that President Trumps action is in your words deeply unsettling to military leaders, showing a complete disregard and indeed a disrespect for the military system of justice called the uniform code of military justice. Thats right, because what it does is, it undermines that unbroken chain of command that runs through the uniformed military. Thats why we have a whole separate system of justice, the uniform code of military justice, in order to adjudicate cases like this, complex, difficult ones, where you have to take into effect, and i do, the tension and the crucible of close combat that someone like Eddie Gallagher went through. I dont see myself as capable of judging that, but the s. E. A. L. S who were in that trial and brought it forward i think very much do. And finally, i was surprised the president chose to bring chief gallagher, after all of this, to maralago. Frankly, there are so many real heroes out there who have never been accused of war crimes, have not posed with corpses, bring some of those folks to maralago, not this particular individual, would be my advice. Whats the goal, what does trump get for doing that . He feels, and im guessing, that somehow this will enhance his standing with the military. And he looks at that i think as a both a political voting bloc, its not insignificant, but also it plays well with his base because there is a lot of support for the military and there should be a lot of support for the military. But in this one, i think his political calculus is not quite right given the level of acrimony and division that is resulting from this within the uniformed military. Admiral, while youre here i want to ask you about another headline that appeared in the New York Times earlier this week. Pentagon eyes africa drawdown as first step in global troop shift. The report is that its part of an effort to reduce missions that are battling distant terrorist groups and refocus on confronting the great powers like russia and china. Tell us about the wisdom of this move. A lot of people feel like were in these endless wars in places fighting nongovernment groups when in fact china and russia are getting more powerful. But 9 11 came out of countries that dont have any governance in which people train to attack the west. How do you think about this type of drawdown . I think that it is correct that we need to be mindful of russia and china in this unfolding 21st century, and another headline is that russia, china, and iran are conducting significant naval exercises in the indian ocean right now. So it is correct that we need to step up our game with regard to great power competition. But, ali, you are correct, we dont want to allow these kind of ungoverned spaces to multiply in places like western africa and nigeria or in the middle east or in east africa, somalia. And heres a news flash, we dont have to deploy 300,000 troops as we did in iraq and afghanistan combined. Targeted, precise deployment of special operators can have huge impact here. I would personally say we can do both. We can face those peer competitors, but equally we can make these kind of precisionguided deployments which i believe had been having an effect and are part of the reason why we have not had a significant terrorist incident like 9 11 for nearly 20 years now. Vermont senator Bernie Sanders has had a positive few weeks after coming out swinging in the last debate and regaining his second place position in the National Average of polls by real clear politics. Lets bring in shaquille brewster, nbc road warrior in lebanon, New Hampshire, where sanders is holding a town hall at the top of the hour. V shaquille, thats what i was telling viewers last week, thats where you exist, out in the field. Good to see you again. Talk to us about this bernie comeback, obviously a good time for him to be gaining momentum in the weeks before the iowa caucus. Reporter this is my natural habitat, no tie on today, ali. I dont know if you call it a comeback but his team is definitely calling it a bernie surge, because of a sense of electability he has and the sense of honesty that his voters and supporters feel. They feel like theyre riding some momentum here. They point to the second place position that hes formed in the National Average of polls and then you look here to, say, New Hampshire, a state he won in 2016. He has now in first place in those average of polls. So theyre going to continue and try to push forward that momentum today. In a couple of minutes hell be announcing the endorsement of a prominent democrat here, Andrew Valinsky who endorsed sanders in 2016. This time he was remaining neutral for a period of time so he could kick the tires, as he told one of the local reporters here, kick the tires of the candidate, evaluate other campaigns. But he eventually came home to senator sanders, saying that he wanted to support a candidate who was pushing forward a movement. Thats what the campaign wants to hear, they want sanders supporters, especially in a state like this where he won, to come home, come back in the fold, especially now that his numbers are rising, especially now that more people believe hes a viable candidate and has a chance to win this nomination, ali. Hes still got a bit of an issue amongst people of enclose are in the democratic party. I want to take a look at two polls, one shows that amongst africanamericans, joe bidens got 53 , sanders 15 , warren 11 . Among latinos, sanders has 27 , doing well there, biden 15 , warren 7 . This will hurt him a little more once he gets to south carolina. What is the Bernie Sanders campaign doing about outreach to minorities . Reporter thats right, and you know the interesting thing, just because of the calendar, you go from iowa to New Hampshire, those are both two states that do not have a large minority presence. About 10 africanamerican, latinos here in New Hampshire. However the campaign has been making outreach to minority communities of priority especially when you consider going out west, they have a western strategy that takes them, and they feel good in nevada, they feel good in california, a much more diverse population there. They are focusing on minorities, and they are continuing that outreach. Good to see you, my friend, shaquille, back in your natural habitat. You did look very good in a suit and tie, however, feel free to jump into my world whenever you feel like it. Shaquille brewster for us in west lebanon, New Hampshire. No. No amount of money is worth anythi anything. Reporter from mission, texas, maria atencio, msnbc. Julia ainsley is joining me now. People remember following the Dakota Access pipeline and the keystone pipeline, imminent domain issues are a big deal in america. They tend to be expensive and they could be drawn out. How is the department of Homeland Security planning to deal with this . It is a big deal especially among of conservatives who are trump supporters. In this case the department of Homeland Security is really going through the department of justice, they want to use court battle and wa battles and want to be able to take the land now and pay for it later. The way they can do this is argue in court that this is a National Security in order to build a wall and it needs to be done away. The only leverage that a lot of these people have is the ability to go back and negotiate how much their land is worth. It is difficult to stop this all together. They could drag it out. We have already seen in some cases their imminent do main cases going back to 2008 trying to take land or the exact same purposes. Some landowners will fight the government over whether or not they have access to their land doing Something Like a soil sample in the first place. They do this because they know it will extend the timeline and getting them more money. There is very little at the landowners disposal in terms of tools they can use. We have to watch out.
