Born free, and President Trump is threatening a constitutional crisis over birth right citizenship, and taking the hardest line yet on immigration a week before midterm elections. We are the only person in the world that a perp comes in, and has a baby and that baby is a citizen for 85 years. It is ridiculous. And with seven days to go, obama and joe biden trying to take back those voters who turned to trump. This is not your fathers Republican Party, man. These are a bunch of different dudes. You have a different Republican Party in the United States congress that knows better. They know better than to give this guy the cover they are giving him. A different bunch of dudes. Good day, everyone. Im Andrea Mitchell where President Trump is stirring up controversy ahead of the midterms on wo two fronts. His response to the pittsburgh massacre, and his hot cracktown on immigration. The president is flying to pittsburgh despite concerns for the mayor and victims families to give them time to bury the dead. The Funeral Services are under way for 66yearold Jeffrey Rabinowitz and Cecil Rosenthal one day after they charge the alleged gunman with 11 counts of mu murder and series of hate crimes. The debate of the president s visit is overshadowed by the decision to challenge the constitution, and try to overturn birth right it ist zenship by executive order telling Jonathan Swan of ax yoes that he is going to divert the constitutional crisis. Some believe that you can get rid of the birth right citizen without constitution change. With executive order. Have you thought about it . Yes, you can do it with the act of congress, but now they are saying that i can do it with an executive order. Have you talked about that with counsel . Yes, i have. And where in the process . It is in the process. It will happen. And the team to unpack all of this, and ron motte is in pittsburgh, and nbc White House CorrespondentKristen Welker, and nbc political analyst ashley parker, and White House Reporter and editor of the washington post, andrea markle. And now, first to ron mott, and it is a mixed report from pittsburgh, and some people want the president there, and others including the mayor and some of the families say too soon and they have to foe can kus on security, and security of the funerals and the emotional weight of the funerals today, and what are you hearing . Yes, hey, there, andrea, and some people feel that the president should not come here at all until he is more forcefully going to denounce the deadly violence that we saw here at the synagogue over the weekend. It is looking as though those drit schisms and him being a distr distraction for what people hoped wow would be a week of reflection, the secret service is on the ground here, and they put up the barriers here across from the synagogue, and so it appears that the president will stop by the synagogue when he makes the arrival here in the afternoon. About the same time that he arrives 10 or 15 minute walk is another gather iing. It is a dual gathering of the unity gathering of the president s guest, and the rabbi said that he would meet with the president , and the rabbi said that he received a lot of criticism for saying that he would welcome the president , and the others said that the timinging is not appropriate as he continues to campaign for congressional republicans, they want to keep it as week of progression of the funerals to allow the families and the community to grieve without the specter of politics. That is the backdrop. And we expect him in the next three the or four hours, andrea. And Kristen Welker, you have been tlaking all of this, and the debate within the white house itself, at a time in the past couple of days as the president is reflecting on the c crisis, aband how different the response was to the pittsburgh massacre was and recent president s throughout history have done. That is right, andrea. This has been several days of the mixed messaging from this the president and the white house. He did come out in his first remarks and condemn the antisemitism, and condemn this vile attack, and then a short time later, he e was on the campaign trail over the weekend taking aim at the political rivals, and we saw it on display when President Trump lashed out at the range of rivals to what he calls the enemy of the people and what he calls quote , unquoe fake news. And Sarah Sanders holding a press briefing yesterday defend ing the president s response and saying, look, he was forceful in coming out, and playing the initial role of consoler in chief. But he is also someone who is not going to hold the punches when it comes to coming under attack, and punching back. I have been speaking to a number of white house official, andrea who have told me behind the scenes, yes, he is taking all of this seriously, and that is why he wants to visit pittsburgh. He does want to be the consoler in chief at the same time, and i am told based on the conversations here, that look, he is a week out of the midterms and when he is on the campaign trail, he pivots quickly back into campaign mode. He tells the base essentially what he thinks that he wants to hear to fire them up to get them to the polls, and that is why you are hearing the fiery rhetoric from the president when he is behind the podium at these event, andrea. And that is certainly going to touch on the immigration issue as well, and so we will get to that in a moment, ashley parker, and you have written about the split screen, and the two sides of the president s response and the white house wrestling with it. He is not naturally empathetic in the first place, and he is not he does not respond the way that the george w. Bush did with, you know, embracing and imaa imam and having an Interdenominational Service as barack obama did at the emmanuel church. He does not see that role as conso consoler in chief, and he will do it in moments, but he was getting unsolicited advice of striking the right tone and balance and he was frankly annoyed and frustrated by it, because he felt it was condescending and gratuitous, and he knows best, and that is the mixed messages of the top, and it starts with the president , and that is what we saw with Sarah Sanders at the briefing, and she said that she will condemn the heinous acts, and in the next breath attacks the media, and also says that the president has no plans to the change the tone heading into the midterm, and also heading into the white house, yes, he does need to play some of the role that we expect from the nations leaders, but likely the news cycle may overtake it, and the caravan issue specifically was mentioned and then you will see the president fanning the flames of immigration and in some of the actions that he is take himself. Monday announcing the 5,200 troops headed to the southern border and the interview of the birth right it ist zenship, and this is a president who is grappling with what stance to take of the tragedies not of his own making. And in fact, ashley, the point exactly taken by his refusal to even consider canceling the political rally. We saw obama and romney canceling their the rallies after a terrible incident when they were running in 2012 in aurora, colorado, and both of them stopped campaigning, and it was not even an issue, and automatical automatically, they stopped campaignin campaigning, and he is not even on the ballot. And at the future farmers of america could have been a rally basically. And so, now, ruth, these numbers are smaller than the president has claim and not an invasion as he has claimed and in fact, these are people according to the fox news anchors and have all sorts of dire illnesses, and none of it has been established at all, and they are women and children, and they are 1,000 miles away from the border, and we are sending the troops this week. We are sending the troops, because they are trying to come to seek a et better life in america, and they are going to claim i presume when they reach the border they are claiming political persecution, and violence, and we have a tradition in this country that is actually one of the reasons that the shooter apparently opened fire on jews in a synagogue by his own account of welcoming refugees, and this is a tradition that this president does not seem to share. Well, it is a tradition, and treaties involved. If we are going to begin to cancel asylum rights. I wanted to ask you about the birthright citizenship, and you are a harvard lawyer as well as being a columnist, and journalist and editorial writer, and at this stage, there is no dispute that this would become a legal fight all of the way up to the Supreme Court, and dare say that even this Supreme Court would not have to wrestle with this. One would think, and the president said is a number of things in the clip that you said earlier that are simply not correct. That it is ridiculous that we have this rule, and it is not ridiculous that we have this rule, because it is in the constitution, and the United States is not the only country that has birthright citizenships, and many countries do. It is not and he said it is clear that you do it by legislation, and it is not clear that you do this by legislation, and indulge me for one second, because this is 1995, walter dellinger, the assistant attorney general and this is the continuing policy of the department of j department of justice, unless it has been secretly revoked, and he became solicitor general, and this is in response to earlier proposals to have legislation top cancel citizenship, and i grapple with the lawfulness of the bill that is not among them, and this legislation is unquestionably unconstitutional, and this is legislation, and this is worse. This is a proposed executive order to rewrite the longstanding understanding after what citizenship means according to the constitution. It is outrageous. And critten welkel kriste welker, is there any question in your mind that is timed for the midterm elections . No doubt that the president wanted to get this out for the midterm, and yes, he was asked about it, and we know that he has been mulling how to make a big announcement sometime this week, and it seems that interview gave him the opportunity to do that. This is a way, andrea, for this president going back to the basics. Remember how he first launched the campaign vowing to crackdown on immigration, and this is essentially yet another version of that, and it is coming on the heels as you are discussing with ruth of all of the very sharp language when it comes to that socalled caravan, and comes to the announcement yesterday they will be sending troops to the border and all of it timed to energize the base and try to get out the base and ahead of the midterm the elections one week now, and andrea, he is going to be making 11 different stops of critical states between now and next tuesday today, and he is o going to be talking about the socalled caravan immigration all along the way. And ashley parker, these are critical states, and not just for the midterms, but there are some governors races in play, and georgia and florida and other places, wisconsin, but the fact is that this is also looking towards 2020, because ohio, and there is no close race in ohio really. The senate race, and the democrat is far ahead, sherrod brown, and he is in ohio, and this is looking ahead to the key electoral states, and looking towards his own map. It sure is. And if you are looking at the rallies, they are not the t traditional rallies that you do for a candidate. These are basically campaign ral rallies, and some could argue reelection rallies already where the candidate, the president is stumping for is incidental, because he mentions them for five minutes if they are lucky, and then the candidate is expected to the praise the president , himself, and we are told that the president is active thely asking abo actively asking about the polls and how se doing, and where he was compared to 2016 and wanting to go back to some of the places that were key in the president ial victory, and places where he fears that he is slipping and very much views this as sort of the testing ground and the beginning for the 2020 reelect. Ashley parker to ron mott and of course Kristen Welker and with ruth marcus, thank you for kicking us off. And now, with the the deployment, what can the troops do at the border . President trump announced sending 5,200 troops to the border days before the midterm elections and part of a migrant march which he calls invasion, and 2,000 the guards are to the border and this is going to bring the number of troops to the border as to syria and iraq combined. And now, are rejoining us is fourstar retired general Stanley Mcchrystal. And he has a new book called leaders and myth reality. It is great to see you and again, congratulations on the book. Leaders are very much on the minds of voters going into the election at every level, and talk about immigration, and the leadership on the ingrags issue, and immigration issue, and why do we need 5,200 troops on top of the National Guard troops already there . There are terms that the military can do in building the tent camps for sure, but deploying the American Military, and the real American Military is a symbolic act, and when we do it oopenly and loudly, we are sending some kind of message to a bunch of different groups. I think that we have to be careful of that. I was reading up again this morning in 1932, president hoover sent American Military into the United States capital, the city, to take bonus marchers and drive them out of the city. They had been there trying to get an overdue bonus they had earned in world war i service. It is an ugly picture and tear gas and bayonets. Against veterans . Yes. And so we have to be careful what we do with the military or we will be embarrassed later. It has to reflect the values. It is also expensive, because there are ways to build tents locally without deploying the troops. No doubt. And the signal of closing the borders and shutting down legal a asylum, and ref yugee status treaty seems to be sparking an angry response. We are talking about the citizenship now as a right. It is something that we got accident by birth. But we ought to be talking about the citizenship as a responsibility. What if we said that voting is mandatory and we take away the Voter Suppression, and National Service for every young american, and National Year of civilian service is required. It is part of the initiative after you left the military service, you talked about the year of service. And still deeply involve and pushing it. Why dont we ask more of ourselves and not less. Stop protecting the things that we have from outsiders and what more we can do and how much more we can be as ale people. There is a interview with kirstjen neilson, the Homeland Security secretary, and the role of the military the. I want to play that part for you. Is there any scenario under which the people who forced their way across the border could be shot at . We dont have intention to shoot at people, but they will be apprehended however. I take the agent and officer personal safety extraordinarily seriously, and they have the right to defend themselves. We are talking about what could become an horrific conflict, and you spoke about whatp happen ed ined in the 30s president hoover, and this is set up to become a confrontation. The thing is that we have almost a month to get it right. It is not something that happens at midnight, and we are are responding that way. We can is sett the condition, and avoid that outcome. I think that we want to. I think that we want to decide how to be viewed not just by the world, but by our kids and grand kids and that is going to be very important. And the month does not seem to be the white house time line and they are thinking of seven days to the election, and i want to ask you about the book, and the leaders, myths and reality and what were you hoping the to accomplish, because you are writing in the forward memorably to john lewis and john mccain who remind us that it is possible to keep the humanity while leading with courage and commitment. Well, we didnt ask either of the gentlemen, and senator mccain was alive and we made that decision. We completed the book, and we wanted to understand leadership, and we came to the conclusion that it not what we think it is, and it never has been. It is much more complex, and it is much more difficult, and human. So when we had it all together, we realized and i went to walk the Edmund Pettis bridge this summer to feel what john lewis felt. It is a remarkable place. I have never been a prisoner of war like john mccain, but both of them withstood brutality and retained the ability to be human and are retained the empathy for others. So we wanted to capture despite how difficult leadership can be, you can do it, and you can still be something that we can admire. And you have written also symbolically, and you took a symbolic action, and portion of robert e. Lee. My wife had given me an inexpensive portrait of robert e. Lee that hung in our quarters to symbolize great military leadership. Yes, no question. And then after charlottesville, it symbolized something they did not intend, because it was a symbol of White Supremacy and things that i am very much opposed to, and annie said to me, and she encouraged, it is something careful of what other people think about you. And so when i went through this process of the book i studied him more than i thought, and he stopped being a great t twodimensional great military the leader, but looking at the entire life, but the fateful decision to go with the south. And very difficult for a man whod spent 32 years in the United States army and trained at west point, but he got it completely wrong. He forgot who he was. He went against the nation that his role model George Washington had helped to create in the defense of slavery. That is not inherently evil, because ied a mir so much about robert e. Lee, but he is more human and he is not longer a statue, but he is a human being who has made mistakes like i have and it is a good reminder to all of us. And exactly one week to go until the midterms, the democrats and the republicans are in a blitz to try to get their supporters to the the polls. The latest nbc news wall street journal poll shows that health care and e kconomy top the issu that the appeal to most middleclass voters. We go to minnesota where we have our reporters and Vaughan Hillyard in las vegas where the Union Workers are canvassing the streets. And to you first in minnesota. And we are in the eighth district where there is a real battle going on the 8th being a large district here in minnesota as big as west virginia. Interestingly enough, like west virginia, the 8th here in minnesota is all about mining. We are joined by curt nelson here of industrial welders and machinists, and the easiest question for you is how important is the economy to the way that you are going to vote on tuesday . Jobs is what minnesotab needs and for northern minnesota, and the iron range is where we are at. And so we can see that there is work going on behind you, so have you seen an uptick since the tariff situation, since the situation with the steel with the president and is that going to be affect iing the way you vote . Yes, it is. When the tariffs kick ed in, steel has really come for the u. S. Steel to be able to make the material, and it is a big deal for us in district 8th. And pete will get my vote in the 28th, but i hope that he carries the district. A lot of people are saying that not only the economy, but are you seeing a trickle down with regards to the Steel Industry here, and people are shopping and buying new cars . I say yes, because with everything that happens with the Steel Industry, it is like you said, kevin, the breakdown and the trickledown effect that we have is that it helps uses and all of the vendors that we go out to get the welding wire as you can see in the background here, and everything that you can see, it is a great trickledown effect. And so if a person has a job, they spend their money . Exactly. Now, there is a lot of talk about health care as well. Any concerns about the republican stand on health care . The Health Care System in the district 8, there is a lot of c controversy about that, that preexisting conditions will be taken away, and steve has said it is totally false, and i believe that. I think that they aring to a great job with health care. Andrea, they have spent 10 million in this district and we will find out if this district is democrat or actually flips. Back to you, andrea. In is one of the unusual districts where a democratic incumbent is facing a real challenge to flip it to the Republican Party, and as you heard from the interview right there, this is one place where the tariffs are helping the president s party. Interestingly enough. Now, to the nevada where of course we have Vaughan Hillyard, and vaughan, there with the Union Workers and canvassing and clinton won nevada by 22 , and 26,000 votes as nearly every battleground was falling to donald trump, and no small partner was the culinary workers and the 57,000 members of that union in las vegas and reno. Big senate race there. Yes, good morning, andrea, and that is the case. This is one of the swing states that Hillary Clinton pulled off, but at the same time here in 2018, it is republican incumbent dean heller trying to hold on to the case. That is where we have the Culinary Union and mentioning 57,000 member, and also taking into account 147,000 people, and to give you an idea, this is the start of the las vegas strip, and this is the stratosphere hotel, and there you can see the top of Trump International hotel, but this is the hub of 250 folks who are bartenders and is Service Workers and others here at the hotels who work, and canvassing door to door to talk to the union members. And they have these posters to be handing out, and trump and heller think that you are stupid and your children are watching this is a full culinary assault on the union the 226, because it is the latino vote of which many of the workers identify that are ultimately going to be the one who helps jackie rosen beat dean heller. I want to the bring in the leader of the 226. And thank you. Back in 2012 and 2016, the union vote was cut in half, but what is making 2018 different . Well, anybody know how important it is this election, and the cull can their union, and we are the largest affiliated local union here. We are the strongest forces, Political Forces in nfevada, an we are putting all of our effort into making people understand how important it is to vote. You are on the streets . Yes, on the streets. And he said over 10,000 people, and we have helping over 650 people to become citizen, and we have this citizenship from 2001, helping the people coming into the city, and helping over 18,000, and right now, 250 people every single day, every single day working 10 to 12 hours a day, six days a week. Talking inside to andrea, because this district came down to 27,000 vote, and in 2018, the expectation is not much different and so turning out those voters is critical. Thank you, Vaughan Hillyard and Kevin Tibbles in minnesota. And now, the blues brother, president obama and joe biden. Vo youre feeling the squeeze. Costs are rising. Its hard to keep up. In washington, one party is calling the shots and the middle class isnt being heard. We need a new congress that will cut taxes for the middle class, ensure coverage for people with preexisting conditions, and protect Social Security and medicare. [grunting noise] ill take that. 30 grams of protein and 1 gram of sugar. Ensure max protein. In two great flavors. You called Andrew Gillam and referenced him a thief. Are the fbi offered him tickets and he took them. He took a trip with the same fbi agent and posing as a developer or something, and the man stonecold took this stuff. I dont even think that he should be allowed to continue on with the race. This is a guy that in my opinion is a stone cold thief. And President Trump attacking Andrew Gillum for governor in florida, and he responded to the president last night on rachel maddow. He performed as he has by bullying people, and you are talking about the most powerful position in the free world, and the president of the United States takes time to badger me, and bully me on twitter. It does not make any sense. The president needs to grow up. And now, joining me is former Virginia Governor the terry mcauliff, the former chairman of the National Democratic committee, and this day started with gillum winning the primary, and ron desantis opponent was accused of a a racial slur and then it has gone downhill since, and the White House Press secretary said that the fbi is investigating gillum which is not the fact as we know. And the City Government is being investigated, but not he, himself. And what is going on here . Dont pay much attention to President Trump, because few things that he says is true. Well, a lot of people are paying attention to him, and he is dominating the election. But more today, and if you are looking to what the governors across the country have said, they have had it with the fear and division. And donald trump cant talk about the issues. You dont see the republicans campaigning on the health care or the tax cut, and you dont see them campaigning on the infrastructure, because they did not do it, so they have to go to fear and dedivision, and wh the and what he tried to do with Andrew Gillum will not work. And what people care about there is health kcare. They have not expanded the medicaid and billions on the table, and 800,000 floridians will get coverage and when he becomes governor, they will expand it, and 800,000 floridians will get medicaid expansion, and we did it in virginia and it is a win. But the big story is out of the election the amount of governors that we pick up. And to i dashgs we are leading today in maine, michigan, illinois, and we are winning in nevada, and new mexico and wisconsin and florida and competitive races in georgia, ohio, south dakota and kansas, and extraordinary, and that matters for redistricting in 2021, and many of the house races that we are fighting today are because of bad map in 2011 and we were asleep at the switch, and not working hard on the redistricting, but it is not going to happen this time. I sued on the congressional map, and the statehouse map and we won both of those, and so we will be winning the house, but we will pick up a number of governorsh governorships r, and we will set this party. And what about stacy abrams because of the major voter depression issue, and the legal fund, and aclu is out there, and can she pull it out . It is a tied race, but shes has a bad hand dealt to her. They are saying that she will win, and everybody is saying it is a dead even, and on the early vote, we did eventing all over the state, and we pulled up outside of atlanta, and they were lined around the block, and i have never seen anything like thisp on a monday night, and the early vote in 33 of the early vote today, andrea, is africanamerican. In georgia. His for theic, andner happened before, but thet Voter Suppression tack takes are going on, and they disenfranchised 50,000 folks. If you had terrence r. Mcauliff, and they would throw the my ballot out, and that is crazy, but that is why we need governors. I vetoed a bill in georgia in order the get an absentee ballot, you had to fax in the drivers license, and are you kidding me . Well, maybe allan has a fax machine at home, but most people dont, and a lot of people have drivers license, but i vetoed it. This is a party of the small margins today, and the expanding base in the country is the democratic party, and the communi communities of color, and so they have to do everything to disenfranchise and get people out, and when we get these governors, we will stop it, and veto that, and at the end of the d day, we want people who are eligible to vote to vote, and that is all we are asking. You have been to 23 states, and what we have seen is that the every place that the president is going, joe biden shows up in a couple of days. He is in wisconsin today, and he is tagging after the president with a very different message. Is joe biden trying to clear the field . For 2020. No, i think that joe biden like everybody else is out there work, and really focused on this coming 2018, and i tell everybody, if anybody talks 2020 they should be disqualified, because our future is on line, and we have to get the house in a check and balance on the trump administration, and we need the governor for the sake of 2021 for the sake of the party, and joe biden is doing what a lot of the great democrats are doing is out, and he is out, and he has been to dozens of states, and i have and everybody is out, and 2020 is coming soon enough, and president obama is out working hard. I have been working with him on the redistricting project, and everybody is really going to have the oar in the water the, and this is the most historical election. And donald trump is taking the country backwards and the fear and division that he is bringing to the the country to daind and we are seeing the effects in pittsburgh. Are you blaming him for what happened in pittsburgh . I dont blame him for the specific act, but doi blame this the president for the rhetoric and what he has done. As president , you are to be the moral leader and you are not. In charlottesville, we had neonazis and white supremists and altright coming into the state, and so neonazis wearing ado adolf hitler wearing the tee shif shirts and i spoke about it. Did you speak to the president . He was supposed to come out to blame them, and he came out to blame one side. And so i lost heather higher, and one of my former security detail there to protect the citizens of virginia, and unfortunately, he fail ed the moral leadership, and president bush, president clinton, and president obama, had similar horrible incidents adds as you know, charleston and they rose as president s to bring the nation together, but donald trump is the worst for the nation. And i was his toughest crit cannic, and i was happy he called me, but i told him to get out of our state, and get out of the country. And the language i heard that the day, people wore hoods because they were embarrassed, but they dont have to wear hood nismore. And i do blame the president for the tone and the decisive nenes and they had pipe bombs going to cnn and other places, and within 12 hours he comes tout call the press the enemy of the people. And when you had neonazis spewing hatred, this not who we are as americans and the real test is get out to vote, and you saw nit virginia last year, and we picked up 15 delegate house seats and the most since 1880, and what happened in 2016, 92 Million People did not vote and woke up in the next day and said, holy cow, how did this happen, and they are coming out, and coming out in Record Numbers, and we will have a big night in november 6th, because we have had. We have had it with the divisiveness. And before i go, i have to say happy birthday and we have the governors cup winner wine. Oh, the wine. And the barboursville wine. And tell alan that you have some great virginia wine coming to celebrate the birthday. Thank you very much. And save me, please, joe in wiscons wisconsin. Mike . Yeah, andrea. Sorry, i am laughing along with your conversation with terry mcauliff, and what we have heard from him is similar to joe biden on the stage behind me at the university of wisconsin madison, and he talked about with me a crowd of College Students his own time om com coming of age i civil rights movement, and he said i am sick and tired the of being sake and tirick and tired tired of this administration. Joe biden talked about being the intended recipient of this device, and he said perhaps his children or grandchildren could have opened them, and he said that he friends that belonged to the pittsburgh synagogue that was the target of this antisemitic attack just this weekend. Weve heard him talk a lot about issues that are important to democrats and swing voters, but he said more than that, as he travels the country, hes done events now on behalf of more than 50 candidates. People come and talk to him about character. They want people with authentici authenticity. Theyre not concerned about specific issues. But theyre concerned about the standing of the country. So from joe biden here in a state that president obama and joe biden won twice but donald trump won in 2016, a real effort by joe biden not to speak just to the base but to the voters who swung in the last election. Thank you so much, in madison, wisconsin, mike menali. We have breaking news now. Nbc justice correspondent pete williams. What weve been told is Whitey Bulger has been found dead in a federal prison in west virginia. The prison at hazelton that he had just been moved to. Hazelton is the former head of the south boston mob. He was convicted of three murders. He was captured in 2011 after he was basically on the lam, hiding in plain sight, in california. Now were told he was found dead shortly after he was moved to this prison in west virginia. There are local reports that bulger was murdered at the prison, but the peeve weve been talking about cannot confirm that. He was 89 years old. Hed just been relocated. Hed been moved around several times in recent weeks. He was in a penitentiary in florida. Within the past 24 hours, he was moved to this prison. So he had just gotten to this prison, this maximum security facility, in west virginia, where this morning he was found dead. Now, what the circumstances of his death are, i dont know. The certainly appears to be suspicious. Whether it was an accident, whether it was Natural Causes or whether hes murdered, andrea, well probably know in the coming hours. Pete williams, thank you so much. Fascinating story, that. And coming up, a new mission. A surge of veterans running for office. Big corporations are making and just got a huge tax break. But the middle class is struggling. Prop c is a commonsense plan. The top 1 of businesses pay their fair share to tackle homelessness for all of us. Companies with revenue greater than 50 million pay, not Small Businesses or homeowners. The prop c plan is supported by the democratic party, teachers, and mentalhealth professionals. Vote yes on c. Big corporations pay for it, not you. Welcome back. The Record Number of women on the ballot this year is especially striking in texas. With 20 women running for congress in the state that has not sent a woman to washington in decades. One democratic candidate is air force veteran and purple heart recipient hager. She decided to challenge him after he refused to meet with her over her fight to overturn the ban on women serving in ground combat. A ban then defense secretary leon panetta finally reversed in 2018. M. J. Hager joins me now. Welcome, thank you so much. Thanks for having me. Tell me about, first of all, this growing group of women running for office. Women and Women Veterans. What do you think the significance is of that . Im really excited to see a wave of veterans and especially Women Veterans running on both sides of the aisle. I think part of it is because maybe there are traditionally barriers to women running, whether thats, you know, this hess tense to try to take on the good old boys club. Womens veterans have already worked for decades in male dominated fields. I never thought of myself as a female pilot, i was just a pilot. Its not easy to intimidate us. Weve already kind of proven our mettle. Speaking of mettles, to someone who was three tours of duty in afghanistan shot down while, you know, fighting the taliban. Youre hardly a pushover. So politics should be easy for you. Still, politics is tough for democrats in texas. Especially women. I think theres a real hunger for, you know, the people i grew up in texas. The people in my district really want present leadership. Theyre tired of the hyper partisan politics and the back and forth. I feel like im watching a High School Football game. We want representatives who are going to listen to us who will be accountable, will have town halls and collaborate with us on solutions. And what are the big issues in your district . Anything that puts food on the table. So the economy, which the great, you know, economic numbers that we hear arent reaching my district. My district has higher unemployment and underemployment still. We have more veterans than 97 of the rest of the country. So Veterans Issues are a big deal. Health care costs. Really, i am uber focused on enabling the people in my district to take care of their families and get food on the table. And have you what about your opponent . He voted against well, in favor of repealing obamacare, the Affordable Care act. Is health care the Biggest Issue . Its one of. I would say its part of the economic issue. Since most people are one major illness or accident away from bankruptcy. I worked in the Health Care Industry for five years and i understand a lot about what drives costs and how the current model we have is unsustainable. Its definitely an issue. Best of luck, good luck out there on the campaign trail. We invited her opponent, john carter. His campaign declined. If he changes his mind, were here. That does it for this edition of Andrea Mitchell reports. Remember, follow us online on facebook and twitter twitter, mitchellreports. Ali velshi. Good ali velshi. Stephanie is on assignment. It is tuesday, october 30th. Lets get smarter. The rabbi pushed us into a store room. The door opens and the shooter walked in. Afraid that the next shot i hear will be a bullet in my back. I was more afraid than any other time in my life. We were Still Holding our prayer books and wearing our prayer shawls. Im hearing people screaming. And its in my brain. I cant erase that tape. Today, two brothers, cecil and David Rosenthal and dr. Jerry rabino witz will be laid to rest. The last thing i want to see is while these families are burying those that they lost, that there are protests and streets being closed and other things that are taking away from the most important thing we can do which is honoring the dead. As President Trump enters the final sprint to the midterms, he is escalating his hardline stance on immigration. Saying overnight he plans to sign an executive order that would end birth right citizenship. Were the only country in the world where a person comes in, has a baby and the baby is essentially a citizen of
