Virginia as Hurricane Michael moves off of the atlantic coast, and while in florida, an entire coastline is being swept away. We thought that it was a cat 4 with a direct hit, it never would have stayed. We have no communication about the outside world and nobody knows about me. And how long will it take to clean all of this up . I dont know. I havent any idea. And the first family, the first lady is answer iing questions about her husbands alleged infidelity and if she loves him . Yes, it is fine. It is what the media speculates and it is gossip and it is not always correct stuff. And goodday, everyone. Im Andrea Mitchell in washington. A shocking new report revealing horrific details about what may have happened to Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, and the turkish government has told the u. S. Officials they that have audio and video of what happened inside of the ko consulate. One said that you can hear how he was interrogated and tortured and then murdered. And then it shows that a Security Team detained him last week when he went into the consulate to get paperwork to marry his fiancee. And after pressure, turkey releasing american pastor brunson under house arrest clear clearing the way for him to come home. Joining us for more on this is msnbcs correspondent Richard Engel and anne guerin reporting on this from the Washington Post team, and also, ned price, former cia analyst, and the former cia National Security analyst, and msnbc analyst. And is so a number of titles there, and lot to talk about. And richard, what do you know about this situation right now, and how much we can trust turkeys reporting of it . So lets start with the disappearance of the saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. And turkey is laying out a compelling case and most ly through the media and leaks and saying that there was a 15member saudi team that they arrived on chartered aircraft. They came into the city, and they stopped off at in front of the consulate here sh, the conss residence a few blocks away. They waited. Khashoggi entered the consulate around 1 00 p. M. , and they believe he was killed between 1 00 and 3 00 p. M. , and the vehicles left from here and went back to the residence, and then some of them disappeared, but then the planes took the off, and they lost track of the vehicles and the planes took off at separate times from the airport. That is the case that the saudis are laying out that they have put pictures of the alleged 15 saudi agents in the newspaper, and they have identified the vehicles and ha they have published the license plate numbers and a lot of animations on the local television here describing what i have just explained and laid out for you, and showing how the vehicles came and left and where they went, and so turkey is trying to put out a very convincing case that this is an organized hit job with a 15member assassination squad sent in from saudi arabia and that the murder took place in the building, and they are not convinced by the saudi arabias explanation that the it doesnt know what happened to khashoggi that he came in, and then they lost track of him, and also turkey is not convinced by the explanation that the security cameras on this consulate were turned off at the time or were not recording video at the time. And in act fa, richard, just to remind all who are watching, when i interviewed the Foreign Relations chair bob corker yesterday, he had come from the secure facility and looked at the intel and he said that he had spoke fon to the saudi ambassador to the saudi arabia and he is the younger brother of the crown prince, and the ambassador said that we dont have any video or recording of him ever meeting the consulate, and he did leave the consulate, and they said it was a fishy explanation, and the ambassador has gone back to riyadh and they are wanting answers from him when he returns to washington. Yeah, the idea that theres plenty of close circuit tv footage of him going in, one from of him coming out is suspicious, and also, his fiancee was waiting outside for quite a long time. Three or four hours. Yes. And so she stopped hearing from him almost immediately when he went inside. So that is always, and that has never added up really to anyone. And now, it is well more than a week since he disappeared. If he was outside of the consulate anywhere, it wouldnt have been more than a week since anyone had heard from him. And yes, the u. S. Does now want a lot of answers from the saudis. It puts the president , and his soninlaw Jared Kushner and the entire administration in what is clearly a dicey situation diplomatically, and politically, these are close ties and relations that the Trump Administration has built and specifically with the crown prince who is the person who is usually thought of to be in charge of the daytoday operations of the government and someone that Jamal Khashoggi had been critical of in his columns. And josh letterman, you were as we reported exclusively yesterday, you have Text Messages, and the Text Messages which stop at the moment he goes into the consulate, and there are no more texts from him once he goes inside. That is right. The Text Messages that were obtained by nbc news show that mr. Khashoggi checked the phone just before going in. And you can see the last screen function on his app, but messages sent just 10 00 after that were never read and they have the gray check marks indicating that once he went in, he did not gain access to the messages that friends were sending him back in the United States. This is huge implications, and now, joining us is james, and everybody is hoping that he is alive, but we are fearing for the worst as does senator corker and the other officials involved in this. And the relationship with saudi arabia forged by Jared Kushner and steve bannon and others in the administration, and the president putting all of their reliance on this crown prince. Regarded as a tough customer, and the crackdown in yemen and the fight against the iranian forces, and the iranbacked forces in yemen and most recently an air strike which killed 40 children on a school bus there. And through all of this, the administration has soft pedalled any criticism. Yeah, i mean, i think that the best way to look at this is twofold. One, be very clear that the u. S. And saudi arabia as governments and institutions have had long standing relationships that go back decades. And so there is no, there is no warming apart of the u. S. Towards saudi arabia because of the Trump Administration, but what you have saw that was very interesting is that with the rise of this crown prince inside of saudi arabia where a lot of people were saying that, you know, expressing caution, and maybe saying that this is moving too fast, and we dont know enough about him, and some were describinging him as hotheaded with the way he was launching this war in yemen, and there is some reservations about whether or not the crown prince was genuinely a reformer, and trying the to do too much too fast and that is where the interesting relationship with Jared Kushner comes in, because he came in and essentially doubled down lending the u. S. s credibility to the the crown prince saying that we support you, and the president on the first visit over seas has been to saudi arabia and he has had the crown prince inside of the white house touting that they will be buying hundreds of millions of American Military hardware and what we saw is that as this saudi and u. S. Relationship under the crown prince and the u. S. Administration continued to grow and become more personal, we saw increased criticism of the saudi arabia human rights on some front inside of yemen and inside of the kingdom itself of these women activists leading the charge for more reforms, and we saw execution as well of people that the saudis say were sentenced to death but a lot of the human rights organizations said that the trials did not meet the tran dards or the International Standards and you saw the two parallel tracks where the criticism was inside the track, and Jared Kushner was doubling down and it was a transactional relationship where the white house needed the saudis to buy weapons, and then when it came to the peace deal, and in return, the crown prince could shore up his support inside of the kingdom by being americas guy so to speak or knowing that washington had his back, and that is why this incident with khashoggi is now a major break at least from the congress with saudi arabia and will certainly test whether this white house begins to have different thoughts about the lead leadership of saudi arabia under the crown prince. And you have teed up to issue that i want to get to with the president on that weapons purchases that he claims 110 billion which is what they bragged about in are riyadh, and it is far less, 25 billion, and this is what the president had to say yesterday. First, i want to to find out what happen and we are looking. Again, this took place in turkey, and to the best of our knowledge khashoggi is not a united citizen is that right . Permanent resident. Okay. We dont like it, john. We dont like it even a little bit. But as to whether or not we should stop 110 billion from being spent in this country knowing that they have four or five alternatives and two very good al teternatives that wouldt be acceptableb to me. Okay. But we are looking for the answer. I think that probably you will have an answer sooner than people think. And so as someone who has worked in the intelligence field, at the cia and at the nsc and how remarkable is this because turkey says they have audio and video, and nbc has good reason to believe it is true. What do we do when we have hard intelligence that this happened against someone who is such a close ally and the president making it a transactional relationship . Well, it is a virtual certainty that the president has not been forthright about the American People about what he knew and when he knew it. He said tuesday days after the khashoggi disappearance and the turks started to tell the press that they believed he had been murdered inside of the ko consulate. And the president says i know nothing about that, and that is nearly impossible. It is nearly impossible thanks for the Washington Post reporting that the Intelligence Community had foreknowledge of the the threat to Jamal Khashoggi, and we will be assured that given the close relationship of the turks intelligence that they have been sharing the intelligence with the american intelligence officials who are in turn almost certainly have been briefing the president. So it is not jen wous of the president to say he knew nothing, but he did something remarkable, he put a price tag on americas identity and values and character, and he said it is 110 billion and you are close it is closer to 25 billion, but either way it does not matter, but he paut price tag on who we are as a people, and what we will stand up up for and what we will not count nens, and when he said that he is not sure that he is a citizen, but he is a resident and it can does not matter, but by that, he gave license and impunity to regimes around the world to carry out their worst impulses on journalists, on their critics an anyone who would criticize them, and that is remarkable from the u. S. President. And there is one piece of good news today, and this is coming from turkey, Richard Engel, we understand that after two years of intense american pressure, the angel cal commu n angelical community that a prisoner has been released. Yes, in is the reason that the economy has been tanking over the last week or so is because of the brunson issue. The u. S. Has been putting intense pressure on brunson and on turkey over brunson and put sanctions on turkey over brunson and that has had a cascading effect where the other countries and rating agencies got cold feet on turkey and the lira is sixsomething to the dollar when it was about three to a dollar a little bit over a year ago. And so people here are feeling the pain. And turkey had been looking for a way to get out of the crisis, and now, turkey needs friends. They need rich and powerful friends. It is alienating to a degree saudi arabia and demanding that saudi arabia be more coooperative and in fact, turkey is today issuing an ultimatum saying that if saudi arabia does not par ttiecipate more willing in the investigation, because the turkish investigators and phrenic investigators cannot get inside of the building and turkey says that unless saw di do saudi does more, the next step is prosecutors and a hauling in saudi diplomats and questioning them, and while it could cause a major rift with a powerful country like the king of saudi arabia, the u. S. Needs friends and found an opportune time to let brunson out of his house arrest by giving him a sentence and then convicting him for time served. Richard engel, a complicated story. Thank you so much from istanbul, and with relooking forward po the reports all day today, and of course, to the panel. Tell us how people are recovering. People are devastated, terri terrified. They dont know where to go from here, andrea, they tell me, because if you are looking at mexico beach, it is hard to even begin to describe the d devastation here. There are houses in the middle of the street. All of the debris behind me is from the beach front property whose foundations gave way and they ended up here in the downtown. Andrea, governor rick scott told me that this is the worst storm to hit florida since hurricane andrew. I was in miami for andrew and that the governor of florida is saying that to us makes you understand the scope of the devastation and the uphill recovery that this community has ahead. Andrea. After months of negotiating, president trumps lawyers are now preparing to answer written questions by special counsel mueller, and we are told that the questions are to focus on whether the Trump Campaign colluded with russia in the 2016 race. There is no agreement for inperson interview between the president and muellers people, and no indication that he is preparing for obstruction of justi justice. Joining me now is kristen welker, and msnbc Political Bureau and analyst, philip rucker. And kristen, the questions are now being answer and the lawyers are answering the questions, the written questions that i guess means as of now, there is not going to ban inperson interview that was sort of in play, and talked about for months and mont months, but what does it mean that they are getting ready to answer the writ the ten questions . It means a couple of things, andr andrea. One, it suggests that the process is moving into a new phase. There have been a lot of negotiations back and forth about the nature of these questions, and so now the fact that the president s legal team has begun to answer the questions, suggests that they have come to some agreement on the nature of the questions themselveses. So, as you pointed out accura accurately, the questions are focused on the issue of collusion, and remember, that is the original subject, and the n investigation that Robert Mueller had launched into russias meddling into the 2016 election, and really, andrea, these are questions that have been going back and forth for months. These are, i am told sort of the refined version. The final version if you will of those questions. Now, as for inperson interview, it is not happening right now, but i think that there is still discussion about whether it will happen, and when it might happen. Theres been a number of sticking points along the way, and everything from the subject and nature of the questions, the scope of the questions, the length of the potential interview, and the exto which the prosecutors could ask followup questions, and all of that is still under discussion right now. Of course, we have heard this president say that he is with willing to do an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller, but andrea, as you and i have been reporting the president s legal team are acknowledging that they are concerned about inperson interview, and the fact that it could open up the president to a perjury trap, but bottom line, this is suggesting that the Robert Mueller investigation is entering a new phase. I want to the ask you both about the first lady, because she is speaking to abc, and on the african trip they were releasing more of the interview, and tom llamas asked her about the affairs her husbands affairs that have been acknowledge ed acknowledged in the past. You are not the first first lady to have to deal with her husbands infidelities, and has it put a strain on the marriage . It is not a concern of mine. I am a mother and first lady and i have much more important things to do. Have you been hurt though . Media world is speck ulating and yeah, it is not always pleasant, of course, but i know what is right and what is wrong and what is true and not true. So, that is a remarkable moment in any first family. Blaming it on the media is one thing, but what is the impact of this do you think . Well, i dont know, andrea. She is clearly uncomfortable talking about that subject, and the long pause when tom asked if she had been hurt by it. We know from the reporting over the last several months that the first lady has been bothered by the Media Coverage of some of the affairs, the Stormy Daniels details, and the Karen Mcdougal details and so forth, and whether it has put a strain on the relationship is really up to the her and the president to say, but it is clearly something that she is not comfortable discussing publicly, and that is a telling moment there. And this is back on the subject of the Mueller Probe, does the fact that there is no questions asked about obstruction mean that it is not an issue or do you think that he does not need the president s answer of that or that he has independent evidence or not going there . This is an indication that it is only one step in the process of questioning the president , and we know that the Mueller Investigation is looking at multiple buckets if it were and the collusion sort of intersfeerns in the campaign aspect, and the president s obstruction of justice once he took office and why has he fired comey or Jeff Sessions as the attorney general and some of those questions, and i assume that mueller is goinging to have questions on that from the president at a later date. Thank you, both very much. And now, coming up, with the mi midterm elections coming up, will blocked votes contribute to the race. Like vermont white cheddar. Then. President trump is crisscrossing the key battleground state s that he won in to 16. A stop in ohio the rally the base and try to keep his party in power. For voters in swing states like Ohio Health Care is a flashpoint. A recent washington street poll says that voters are less likely to vote for an candidate who wants to eliminate or eradicate obama care. And we spoke to the district about why this issue is driving people to the polls. Just for a show of hands how many of you would say that health care is one of the most important issues in this election. All of you. My daughter was diagnosed with melanoma one year after the hca and it was lifechanging what the ahca did for us. Do you feel in jeopardy of it . I lose sleep over it and every single thing in my life is fighting to make sure that she has insurance, and it is not only will it affect her health care, but it is going to affect the Financial Security for the rest of her life. So compelling. And Morgan Radford is joining us from ohio and charlie sykes, contributor to the Weekly Standard and also David Wassermann, the editor for the kirk reporter. And now n is so reporting, and it gets to the core of what the democrats are saying is a major issue for them and whether they have can or have communicated it to the voters is the next question. That is right, andrea, and this is an issue that the people are impacted by personally. So you can see that we are in lebanon, ohio, ahead of the president s rally tonight, and hours before the president has come, people are lined up with the maga hats and flags, and so you can see kind of the sup oport that he has in this area, and we have been talking to the voters, andrea, and asked them what was the most important issues they cared about and most people said health care, and a lot of the republican supporters said they believe the president or take him at his word that he is going to protect the people with preexisting condition, and that on the other hand, we talked to the other voters last night, and they said that they cannot afford the have this issue in dep jeopardy. And you heard from colleen who said is that her daughter had been diagnosed with cancer, and she said that she spends her day to make sure that he is protect and her Financial Security is not going to be disruped because of health care insurance. So half of the country would not vote for a candidate who is going to limit the Affordable Care act. We are talking to the people ahead of the rally, and many are going to try to see what the president has to the say about this specific policy and one that impacts them every single day. It is amazing to to see them out there early, and the president has been claiming it and that is one example of it. Charlie psyches, what about the kavanaugh effect, because we have evidence of some of the polls in the key states like nevada, tennessee, and arizona that the republicans are coming home to the president post kavanaugh, and whether it is the calendar, and whether it is kavanaugh, it is hard to tell. Yeah, it is hard to tell. There is the coming home factor in states that are heavily red, but it is no question that the republicans and the conservatives were energized by what they saw happen as the democratic overreach, and by the way, you will notice that the republicans are pushing that scene, and i saw a new ad today just say no to the mob. And again, they would not talk about health care, but look at what the left is doing, and look at how the democrats are overreaching. And im going to guess that you will be hearing a lot from the president tonight on the, along those lines. We do have polls from nbc and maris saying that in some of the states, voters are more likely to vote for people who opposed kavanaugh than supported kavanaugh, and talking about nevada. You will see it overall in where the senate races are, but certainly in minnesota, wisconsin, and nevada. David wassermann, talk about the house side compared to the senate side. The republicans are now with the National Committees are pulling back from the number of seats to focus on the ones that they think that they can perhaps eke out a one or two or singledigit seat victory and maybe save the house. Yes, andrea, the theme of the last few weeks has been divergence between the small towns and the rural voters who want a conservative pro life Supreme Court, and the enthusiasm going up in the republican numbers in seemingly precarious districts, but then not much changed in the blue and the suburban swing seat where is the republican seats are at risk. Today, we are talking about the Playing Field that has narrowed a little. By and the democrats are clear favorites for the house, and the republicans are making hard cuts to vulnerable incumbents in places like suburban chicago, orange county, california, and kansas city. And with the republicans liking the more recent numbers in places like upstate new york, and in some of the redder places like lexington, kentucky. That is because they have had a strongholdgerrymandering and so a lot of the districts are shaped to support republican voting. In georgia, you have stacy abrams running gaiagainst the secretary of state in georgia and now a lawsuit is about to be filed from the naacp and the alcu where the secretary of state here brian kemp is in charge as secretary of state of registration, and in his own election. And the election is the g governor, and the accusation is that he is suppressing 53,000 registered voters, and nearly 70 of them are africanamerican, and 32 of georgias voting electorate is africanamerican, and so it could be decisive and that is a big number. Charlie, would you like to speak to that . Yeah. He does not get many points for subtlety here. It is legitimate to be concerned about the voter integrity and the ballot sbintegrity and that votes are not cast fraudulently, and then, you have a actions like this that are not passing the smell test when it comes to voter depression. Is it easier for people to participate in the voter franchise or trying to the kick people off . It is going to be litigated closely, but it is a huge optical problem for republicans accused around the country and lost legal challenges through the gerrymandering and a number of things that they are targeting africanamerican voters. If that is true, that is a National Problem for the republican party. And in fact, it is in 2014, he lost a case with the same issues against a challenge from stacy abrams and others from the Africanamerican Community on this very same issue, and so georgia with a real problem, David Wassermann in the past. A couple of issues at play, and the new exact match law put on the books, and look, this is much more stringent than other stateses have to be sure. It is not uncommon for the secretary of state to be presiding over the election they are running, and we have seen the democratic secretaries of state in those roles, but there is also the question of whether the voter purges are following the law in terms of the cleanup of the voter lists that is mandated by law from election to election. And another piece of this is that under the new Supreme Court rulings in the Voting Rights act in places like texas, they no longer have to prove affirmatively they are not suppressing, because they not under the whole restriction and to be continued. Thank you all so very much. And joining me are the director and a Sexual Assault survivor who is featured in the film, and sharing her story with us as well. Thank you, all, so much. Thank you, andrea. And so, can you tell me why you made the film . What motivated you . We started the documentary process in june. Laura had worked at a womens shelter in westchester, and we had had a contact with us in new york city of someone else who worked at a local shelter, and we found with the two of us that there were a lot of the stories that were coming out. Now, time linewise, this is before october that the Harvey Weinstein situation happened. So once that occurred, we were certain that we had to come through, come through with this documentary and make it. Absolutely. Also, too, in terms of the through line of the stories that were chosen, there were so many st stories that we came into contact with. 45. Yes, firsthand personal accounts, and you know, very early on, we realized a thread with the stories that we chose about youth and adolescents specifically, and that became a really powerful through line for the stories that you see in the film. At the Film Festival. Yes. It is so remarkable for you to be able to tell your story but tell me from your perspective. You came from ireland where a lot of things were hidden and covered up in the church, as well, so we know sort of culturally how difficult this must have been for you and in your case it was an adult family member. You were 8 years old. How liberating is it to finally be able to speak about this through the Womens Center and through the film . It is extremely liberating because for the longest time i carried this secret with me. And it was just the right time to tell my story. I had heard about the project. I had gotten contacts with stefano and we talked about length and i said i have my own story and to i am a mother, i have three beautiful children and also a teacher. For me to my message is we got to let the children know that its okay to speak. Its time. They need to know its okay and that they can feel safe to speak out. To message to others, because there are many women maybe had a childhood experience, a teen experience. We know what happened allegedly in the case most recently of dr. Ford. People who might feel that the result of that hearing and that political process is to teach people not to come forward. What would be your message to victims . To definitely come forward and since we have done this documentary ive had women and men approach me and tell me their story. And to know that were not alone. And that our voices are important. And that we need to be heard. And to so it is important. Dont you cant carry this. If you have thats what were trying to get out. We want do get that message out. It is okay to speak. And finally to those who watch the documentary, stefano or laura, charlotte, the child who is silent throughout much of your filming, she eventually did speak an you chose not to show it because of her age, but how is she doing . She is in a Treatment Center in new jersey and doing much better. We are in contact with her family, her father. And it was very similar. Her stories to claires story with an uncle. So shes doing much better. Best as you can hope. Absolutely. I think in a situation like that. Absolutely. Well, we want to thank you for what you have done. Thank you. Thank you. Very therapeutic. As you know i was very, very moved by it. What can i say . We were very privileged to share it with our audiences, live audiences at the meet the press Film Festival and now the audience here. Go to the meet the press website at nbc news. Com and our thanks to stefano, laura and most particularly of course to claire. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. You bet. And coming up, sins of the fathers. The archbishop of washington, d. C. Resigning amid the Catholic Church sex abuse crisis. Details next. And now a stunning downfall of one of the most powerful cardinals in the Catholic Church. The pope accepting the resignation of cardinal wuerl. Accusations he still vehemently denies. Our First Priority must always be the victims and in particular fostering a genuine sense of healing for the victims. Nbcs Claudio Lavagna joins me from the vatican. This was swift punishment. Yet he is going to stay on temporarily in washington for Administrative Functions and a role in the vatican. Reporter yeah. Absolutely, andrea. We have been expecting pope francis to accept the resignation that the cardinal tendered to him a few weeks after the name was mentioned more than 200 times in that damning report from the grand jury in pennsylvania. But what we did not expect, what was really surprising today was the tone that the pope used for the acceptance. Now, on the website of the archdiocese of washington apart from a statement published by the cardinal in which the cardinal said he was sorry, apologized for the past mistakes and asked for a pardon, while the cardinal seemed to be hard on himself than the pope was on him because then on the same website a letter by the pope francis was published, as well, in which the pope essentially said it was in a letter i can only describe as affectionate or supportive the pope said i understand that you did not cover up crimes, didnt cover up the crimes of sexual abuse in the tenure of bishop in pittsburgh and made some mistakes and because of that i still find it noble that you resigned, nevertheless, for the good of the church and of that for that i am proud and i thank you. Essentially also said that because of that then he wanted him to stay on as an administrator, which in Church Language is caretaker of the archdiocese until a successor is found and will be a disappointment to critics who saw in the opportunity, of this opportunity as yet another way for pope francis to show that she what he always said, to hold bishops accountable for not doing enough to act against sex abuses within the Catholic Church, andrea. Claudio, thank you so much. It was striking the president praising him. Rather, the pope praising him for his nobility. Follow us online on facebook and twitter. Here is stephanie for velshi ruhle.
