Sure. What we know is that Jared Kushner, during the transition, in december, had a meeting with the head of a bank that is controlled by the russian government that is sanctioned by the u. S. , was put under sanctions after russias annexation of crimea and intervention in ukraine. They met a half hour, it was in new york, but each side is telling a different story about what the nature of that meeting was. The bank put out a statement saying that they met with Jared Kushner into his capacity as the head of kushner companies, and at this time Jared Kushner was still involved in his businesses. And the white house is saying that Jared Kushner did not discuss anything related to business with this head of this bank and that their conversation was just innocuous and kind of very general and that they also are saying they did not talk about sanctions. So its a quite unusual meeting and its its one that this is the first time that weve seen the white house actually try to get out ahead of something on this because theyre saying that he volunteered to talk to the committee and that he wants to be forthcoming and so, you know, while this was not a meeting he disclosed earlier getting out ahead of it, carole, suggest they were nervous about it . What does it tell you . It is in some ways a break from the norm . To meet with this particular bank, yes, it is. I think its an indication of, you know, them trying to get look, Jared Kushner is probably the most important person in the white house next to the president and his wife, the president s daughter, and its an indication that this is something that they wanted to be very careful about. To meet with this particular individual, the head of this particular bank, its not its not the same thing as, say, meeting with the Russian Ambassador, which Jared Kushner also did. Its just a different dynamic, and so i think they want wad to be forth wanted to be forth coming, appear to be, before it got up into a media swirl, which as you know, theyve been very critical of the way that the russia issue has been covered. I mean, part of the problem, obviously, for this white house, and i can say actually when i worked in the obama white house, every day youre sort of making a list of the possible questions you want to ask and assuming you would get called on, and then i would say most of them, were what i would consider to be substantive. On a day like today, a rolling back of environmental regulations, would be a large part of this briefing and there would be a lot of back and forth and these are serious issues that affect the health and the economy of this country. How does the white house sort of bring this back around, or is there any sense that they have a strategy to do that . Well, i think theyre still kind of trying to figure that out, right. I mean they have this humiliating defeat on health care, for instance, and you hear Different Things coming out of the white house. One thing were glad this is behind us. The president really didnt care about health care. Hes excited to move on to tax reform and get a win that way. Talking to white house officials i heard Dick Mulvaney is doubling down to get health care going. Theres certainly a lot of balls in the air and its unclear, to me at least so far, which strategy they will land on. Is there any sense talking to members of the administration, its only been since friday, theyve learned any lessons from health care. When the president was asked, he said ive learned a lot about loyalty, but in terms of the way things operate in washington, is there any indication that something is going to be different this time around . Well, what weve seen, now weve seen since friday, the president and has tried to focus i mean theyre trying to pivot, right, focus on climate change, they had the attorney general come out yesterday and talk about sanctuary cities, and now but if you look at what the president s next couple moves are in terms of tax reform and infrastructure and those kinds of things, hes going to need democrats, so it has to be a different strategy because that was not the strategy on health care at all. So well see a little bit of a different kind of posture from the white house as they try to go after those legislative pieces because it just requires that. On a lighter note if i can ask both of you, one final thing that may come up at the briefing and im going to give sean spicer a line if he wants to steal it, its not mine, but we saw this tweet from a Washington Post reporter, looks like President Trump wont be following in his predecessors footsteps on opening day.
