We should be clear the woman says her brother was not individual a from the federal indictment of hastert, the man allegedly paid for his silence. John what more do we know today . I tell you andrea thats all we know frankly. Hastert has been silent about this invisible on this since he was indicted. The indicted was handed up last week. He has not been seen in his hometown of plano, illinois or in the town yorkville where he was the wrestling coach. His court date had been scheduled to be a arraigned and enter a plea yesterday in federal court here in chicago. That date earlier this week was suddenly rescheduled until tuesday without explanation. Nbc news has not been able to confirm the Jolene Burgess account. Weve been trying hard to do that and find hasterts attorney. Thats all we know right now. This allegation reaching back some 40 years. Thousand hes been indicted on unrelated charges or actually charges of banking and lying to fbi as part of payments to conceal prior actions which are sexual in nature and involved a student when he was wrestling coach and teacher in illinois. That student was another student, referred to in the indictment as individual a, not the student described by his sister on abc. Heres another bit of that interview. Theres certainly been a lot of conversation about what went on in those years. Now the statute on limitations on anything hastert did or didnt do has run. Hes not charged with Sexual Misconduct. Hes charge add under aspect of banking law where banks are to report if there are withdrawals of more than 10,000. Hes charged with trying to skirt that taking out money less than that large withdrawals and lying to fbi about trying to get around this whole issue. One thing we should point out, one of the reasons theres so much interest in this Dennis Hastert was one of the most powerful men in the house. He voted repeatedly against any legislation that would not only advance same sex marriage or same sex relations but voted against to roll back protections, to roll back marriage rights for those in states like massachusetts which already approved same sex marriage. This is an issue of political hypocrisy a side from allegations of pedophile we hear today. There are no charges of Sexual Misconduct against him. Hes charged with trying to skirt those banking laws. Actually violating the banking laws with large cash withdrawals according to the indictment. He had an agreement with this individual a to pay this individual 3. 5 million as the indictment says compensation for prior misbehavior or prior behavior. Other officials i spoke to in Law Enforcement felt the signature did lead to official Government Entities in china. As long as terrorism gets uttered enough times, we submit to what the government wants. Thats been the case for the last 14 years in the United States. This is the first time that didnt work. As far as the most recent revelations, the most important take away from that is every time the government goes to defend the program of masseur have a lens, they justify by trying to scare people about terrorism. Revelation after revelation shows including this last one, the bulk of the system has nothing to do with terrorism. The latest information about the Cyber Attacks confirmed by everyone. I dont know if you trust the confirming sources. Talking fbi, homeland white house, congress. Do you think theres a legitimate cyber threat from places like china, north korea, adversaries . Yeah i mean thats always the case. Theres all kinds of legitimate threats. The question becomes to what extent do we trust the government to invade and weaken the internet, how much oversight is needed. I dont think anybody grudges the countrys trying to weaken those threats. Trying to build back doors into the internet expand the surveillance theyre doing makes the internet weaker and more vulnerable. If nsa weakens protocols to let them get into our systems, it lets the Chinese Government use the same back doors, hackers or people more malicious than that. We wish the government would spend a fraction of what its spending on weakening internet privacy and protect the internet from that invasion. Can you talk to Edward Snowden and share how he feels . Hes written today. Does he feel a sense victory with scaling back of bulk collection of telephone record this is week . Definitely. Ive spoken to him many times over the last several weeks about the debate. He feels gratified and feels a big part of what he set out to do has been fulfilled. He feels this is what democracy is supposed to look like. Things decided not in secret by Security Officials but having informed group that debates in congress what they want the law to be. Like most that care about privacy, he feel this is law is inadequate lot more to go as far as our government spying on us. I think he feels this is a step in the right direction and he feels gratified because he triggered these debates. Do you think he can find a way to come back to the u. S. . Does he want to . Sure. He said so many times. This is his home and where his family is and friends are and career has always bchblteen. Hes not going to come back to spend three or four decades in a cage which is what the u. S. Government wants to do with him. A lot have come forward in journalism and politics that said i was wrong about snowden. I thought he was a traitor. I see hes a hero or patriot. Theres been calls like that in the last month. The government wants to make sure future whistle blowers remain fearful. They dont want snowden coming home to a heros welcome. Hopefully, i think people are opening their eyes to how important this was for democracy is seeing him in a different light. Do you think hes any closer . Negotiations or talks to find a path home for him . I think the talks there have been talks over two years. Theyve pretty much gone nowhere because of governments insistence he spent many years in prison. Thats something hes not going to do. I dont think theres beenism improvement in that regard. What my colleagues at ap have been reporting is that as we all know from reading the indictment this is something that happened apparently many years ago, and the the sister of this man had made a at the points to talk to news organizations and later decide had the she didnt want to come forward with her story. Without her story, it was difficult to confirm and be able to put forward what shes saying now in a publishing way. With this indictment she feels comfortable talking to some news organizations. It does add another level of concern and another level of just more of a disturbing nature in this case. Jonathan just getting away from what happened back then and statute of limitations has expired. If true these allegations are serious. At the time it would have been of a criminal nature. Said, the political impact. This man was powerful naturally and in his hometown. The power he had over these kids, the team. Look at his record. Look at him voting on social issues against same sex marriage to roll backing same sex rights for those that obtained it in massachusetts and other places. He had a perfect score from the natural right to life economy. I want to push back a little on this notion the hypocrisy accusation against the former speaker. Being gay and being basically an alleged child abuser child molester are two completely different things. I think where the speaker finds himself now is in a situation he has to deal with the actions that he allegedly did in the past his efforts in the present to try to cover them up paying people off. Also how is he going to deal with more individuals and more stories that come out . The person were talking about today isnt individual a, its someone else whos sister confronted him. She tries to make the case shes focused on democratic primary not looking ahead to the general election. Yesterday and is today, she tried to poke holes in what shes saying. She sees this an issue to rally the Democratic Base and put hit on republicans to make the case why they may not expand Voting Rights. Jonathan i wanted to ask you also about ted cruz. Ted cruz has a line in his stump speech against joe biden. Not a good joke, but it draws a big laugh from his audiences, republican audiences. He used it this week again. Senator cruz with that joke is showing why hes probably one of the most hated people in the senate. Both democrats and republicans do do not like this guy. That is an example. Theres no the man is grieving. The Vice President and his family are grieving. This is not individual a cited in the indictment, the anonymous person that had the financial relationship to cover up alleged misconduct. What does this tell us . What is your reaction to this . Well first its not a surprise. I dont think anybody has had sex once of a certain kind. It did seem clear to any of us when this came out that form her speaker hastert had a was at least to some extent bisexual. What it is sadness. It makes new frankly feel better about the progress weve made. A side from the fact the illegitimate nature it was a teacher student relationship. The gay sex in itself was Something Back then considered so scandalous hastert couldnt do it in an open way. Its a mark of progress. People like hastert wouldnt be subject to the same temptations today. A man who has those feelings can express them more openly. Its a reminder of price everybody in society paid not just the individual. Its frankly to me reminder of hypocrisy among colleagues. Hastert presided over impeachment of bill clinton, someone that had sex with someone less his age who was an intern. He put forth constitutional amendments to ban same sex marriage. It is reaffirmation of hypocrisy particularly on the republican side. They are the ones that intended to made capital out of particular behavior problems when they themselves were engaging in them. He had a perfect voting record for so called Christian Family values. Im putting that in italics. Youre pointing out hypocrisy of voting record when it came to same sex is voting issues. Not just voting record. Dennis hastert was the speaker. He determined the agenda. It was his choice in 2004 and 2006 as speaker to put before the house and push for constitutional amendments that could ban same sex marriage would have wiped out the ones in massachusetts. He doesnt have the justification well you know i was in a tough spot had to do something. He initiated those two major antigay activities which were defeated on partisan lines. Did you ever hear rumors about him . Its stunning to people now to think there was never anything of his secret life. No i did not. I know theres a tendency for people to say i knew that all along. I dont think anybody did. Obviously being gay i came out in 1987. I heard all rumors. The members of congress were engaging in activity id hear from somebody else. If you asked me in 2000 whatever to draw up a list of ten engaging in sex with other men, dennis would have been on that list. No i never heard any rumor. If there were rumors around i heard most of them. It strikes me another congressman was outed from arizona and repeatedly reelected, a republican. He was reelected several times, but he had primary opposition. Jim colby was a guy chairman of a subcommittee. He finally retireerred way earlier than held like to. He was in his 60s. He came out in 1996. He was forced out by the advocate magazine. He ran a couple more times. He was the difference between a democrat can where i was overwhelmingly supported by my party. He ran against people getting 40 in the primary. Thats unheard of for a leader. He finally quit because he was tired of fighting both primaries and general elections. Interestingly the democrat that i can succeeded him when he timely quit was gabby gifford. That is interesting. People mistake same sex relationships with what in this case was a student teacher relationship underage. Its a criminal matter. Im glad you point that out. The problem is not a same sex relationship obviously. The problem is in part the prejudice existed then did lead people to behave in ways that were not responsible. I had an incident myself but not involving pedophile. The problem here coach hastert, the wrestling coach, was imposing himself. Whether they were voluntary or not becomes hard to tell on students who were both underage and subject to his supervision. I appreciate your pointing that out. Thats the problem. The problem was the teacher taking advantage of students many whom were under the age presumably, not the fact he had same sex relationship. The point is today, men that have the feelings Dennis Hastert obviously had it becomes clear it was not just one person have more constructive ways to deal with it.
