that is the million dollar question. tom hard kin served as iowa's democratic senator three decades and joins me by phone. thank you for being on the show. >> hey luke. nice to be with you again. >> so hillary clinton did not fair too well in iowa in 2008. a loss to president obama and was also behind john edwards coming in irdthird. what does she have to do to im improve in the state to iowa? >> i was there in 2008. obama outhustled everyday. he did the door to door town to town thing. john edwards had a lot left over from the vice presidental run. a lot of iowa supported john edwards are breathing a sigh of relief he never got elected. so here comes hillary clinton. iowa loves her and bill. when i had the steak fry, they were both there. electricity was in the air. iowa is ready to have hillary clinton come out, meet with them and talk to them. i can tell you they're very excited about this. >> hillary clinton is saying that she wants to earn everybody's vote, especially in iowa. at least from preliminary reports show the state is warm to hillary clinton but not 110% sold. what does she have to do to close the deal so others can't sniff above 5 or 10%? >> she's going to have to work, and she knows that. we've spoken about that together. going out to some small towns and letting people know that this is not a high altitude bomb bombing run. she's going to be down there with everyday americans, everyday iowans speaking to them about their hopes and and dreams. it's going to be a different approach than eight years ago. >> we'll finish you off with this. if you were advising hillary clinton, what do you think is her biggest weakness in iowa she has to work through? >> i've got to tell you, i don't see any real weakness for hillary in iowa. we iowans are pampered. we're used to people coming to our homes, doors, things like that. so for better or worse kind of maybe expect that. so i think hillary, doing things that we did on my senate campaign, house campaign -- she knows how to do that really well. i'm telling you, she's so good at one on one or small groups. that's where she really shines. when she starts to do that in iowa i think the reaction will be very positive. >> it will be interesting to see how intimate she can keep things with the media strong. that will be great. tom thanks for joining us. >> thanks. andrea filed this report on hillary clinton's 2016 strategy. >> and i hope you'll join me on this journey. >> this time hillary clinton is promising a listening tour. instead of big rallies, small events targeting middle class. instead of down playing her gender, this time playing it up. >> i'm still in the grandmother glow. >> what is going to be different? >> msnbc contributor robert gibbs, senator advisor to senator obama in his campaign. he joins me now. thanks for being on the show. you went up against the clinton machine, scored unbelievable victory in iowa in 2008. what did you expose in 2008? what does that mean for her in 2016? >> i do think when the clinton campaign launched in 2007 and went to iowa there was an expectation that they were so far ahead in national polls they would win without having to try. iowans expect you to come several times to ask for your vote and answer the questions. after they've done that four or five times, then they'll think about supporting you. it takes a great deal of effort. the way she wants to be perceived is asking for their support and earning that trust over the course of a long period of time. that will be different than presumably that was tried last time. >> if you were advising her, what's important for her in iowa? a lot has been said about the campaign in general. going back to her senate campaign in new york in 2000. is it more important to play the politics which obama did so well? could she play that up being the first female president? >> i'll say this. i think they both have to work together. the message has to reinforce who she is. who she is has to reinforce the message. the biggest thing over the next several weeks is not -- we now know she's going to run, how she's going to announce that she's going to run. what people want to hear from des moines all over the country is why she's running. what animates her, what brings her to this point in her life? what does she think she can do as a president that nobody else can do? that's what everybody wants to hear. that's how they're going to kick the tires and ask the questions. >> you can't have the kennedy mud 1980 moment. you have to know what you're in for? >> not until i see -- i would say this about any candidate. until i see the actual vision of where they'll go. she's one of the most qualified to ever run and vetted. >> what does it mean for hillary clinton and what's the state of the party if bill de blasio, close to the clintons -- if bill de blasio is practicing brand preservation for progressive populist and not giving hillary clinton the full endorsement, what does that mean for her in the democratic party? >> i think that means this is more dynamic that there's one big candidate. the only way you have leverage over a campaign of one person is wait and ask them to do certain things along the way. i think if there were five or four people in this race, bill de blasio would be with hillary clinton. i think because there's largely one person surfacing in the race t the only way to get something out of the campaign now is get them to be for a certain set of policyies policies. i think this is why he's waiting for that. >> that's a huge risk to him in terms of how they shut people how out. if you were running the clinton campaign, what keeps you up at night? >> i think there's a long road to go. what would keep me worried is you've got to keep energy and excitement for a long period of time presumably without a lot of tough contests. obama campaign felt this in 2012. it was hard to feel enthusiasm when there wasn't a campaign every week. it's their job to take the excitement around this announcement that's gone well thus far and build that excitement moving into a period in which there won't be a daily orb weekly momentum shift as there would be in the contested primary. >> thank you so much. you're appreciated. busy day on the campaign trail. rubio will join the trail officially. we'll have that. from the trail to capitol hill, congress is coming back to work. could that produce a deal with iran? "the residence" inside the private world of the white house. get yourself a copy. up next, where is hillary clinton more? we're going to check in with andrea the human hillary tracking drone, shortly ahead. here at friskies, cats are in charge of approving every new recipe. because it's cats who know best what cats like to eat. up today, new friskies 7. we're trying seven cat-favorite flavors all in one dish. now for the moment of truth. yep, looks like it's time to share what our cats love with your cats. new friskies 7. for cats. by cats. welcome back. let's check in with andrea mitchell who's on her way to iowa. andrea, are you there? >> indeed. you're the one. >> you've covered clintons from the beginning, seen it are from the highest highs to lowest lows. what do you make of this roll out, skooby doo van stopping at random gas stations along the way. >> this is their attempt to show her as the average person relating to average, everyday people as did her video, trying to show she can cross the country. it's a deliberate, very well orchestrated attempt. everybody this the media are being used in this regard. there was a low key video. there wasn't a big flashy campaign rally as some competitors have launched nor the kind of rally she had in '08. she learned her lesson. she's got to reintroduce herself. she's trying to let people know there's a real person underneath. the question is how do you rebrand yourself after people have known you after 25 year miss public life. that's what it's all about. >> it seems she's trying to brand herself now the embodiment of what she feels would be most popular policies moving forward. this whole idea it's about you and not me. the one thing i would say she has in her pocket that the policy message doesn't necessarily work out. she could use it in terms of shattering the glass ceiling. how much of a mix do you think we'll see with policy and personal? >> the policy has to be there. they can social media and work around it but in the end they have to define who she is and what she represents in terms of specific economics. i think it's really interesting as you and others noted, there was no foreign policy in her video. she's not focussing on her years as secretary of state. that's most likely because there are a lot of missteps not just from hillary clinton but everyone in the administration with the growth of isis and toppling of leaders in egypt and libya not working out, failed states everywhere you see. there isn't a whole lot to look at and the embrace of iran and those negotiations are still controversial. there will be hearings today in the house and tomorrow in the senate. people are taking a cold, hard look at that. the verdict isn't in on the engagement policy of the president. she was in on the launch of all of that. she is focussing on where she sees everyday americans live. that's the wage gap. she's got to -- she's got to be specific about taxes and how she can disentangles herself as a long record as a senator from new york. >> without a that a lot will soon follow. andrea mitchell on the road tracking hillary clinton. thank you for that phoner. you'll be live from iowa tomorrow. that does it for this edition of "andrea mitchell reports." tomorrow on the show the host live in iowa a as hillary clinton makes her first campaign stop. follow us on twitter. msnbc with thomas roberts is next. take care. here in san diego, we're building the first one ever to run on natural gas. ships this big running this clean will be much better for the environment. we're proud to be a part of that. if you struggle with type 2 diabetes, you're certainly not alone. fortunately, many have found a different kind of medicine that lowers blood sugar. imagine what it would be like to love your numbers. discover once-daily invokana®. it's the #1 prescribed in the newest class of medicines that work with the kidneys to lower a1c. invokana® is used along with diet and exercise to significantly lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. it's a once-daily pill that works around the clock... here's how: the kidneys allow sugar to be absorbed back into the body. invokana® reduces the amount of sugar allowed back in... and sends some sugar out... ...through the process of urination. and while it's not for weight loss it may help you lose weight. invokana® can cause important side effects including dehydration, which may cause you to feel dizzy, faint, lightheaded, or weak especially when you stand up. other side effects may include kidney problems, genital yeast infections... ...urinary tract infections, changes in urination,... ...high potassium in the blood or increases in cholesterol. do not take invokana® if you have severe kidney problems or are on dialysis. stop taking and call your doctor right away if you experience symptoms such as rash swelling, or difficulty breathing or swallowing. tell your doctor about any medical conditions medications you are taking and if you have kidney or liver problems. using invokana® with a sulfonylurea or insulin may increase risk of low blood sugar. it's time. lower your blood sugar with invokana®. imagine loving your numbers. there's only one invokana®. ask your doctor about it by name. it's more than a network and the cloud. it's reliable uptime. and multi-layered security. it's how you stay connected to each other and to your customers. with centurylink you get advanced technology solutions, including an industry leading broadband network, and cloud and hosting services - all with dedicated responsive support. with centurylink as your trusted technology partner you're free to focus on growing your business. centurylink. your link to what's next. . hi everybody. good to be with you. in for thomas roberts, today on msnbc live road trip for hillary clinton with a cross country drive to the critical caucus can state of iowa. can she overcome the past to win the future?
