Following in the footsteps of his father who was a new York City Police department officer, and he died 22 years ago today, along with his brother who was a firefighter. This young man says service is in his dna. His mother is also was a police officer. It almost seems like it never crossed his mind not to follow in their footsteps. I said to him, considering what happened to your dad and uncle, dont you realize how dangerous this job is. He said, i do, but i also know i have to do this because its a part of my dna. We hear a lot of stories like that of young people whose parents, firefighters who died. He lost more than 343 firefighters on this day. Now children of those firefighters have become firefighters themselves. Theres such a tremendous sense of honor and gratitude for the sacrifice that the people made here. It is hard for people to go forward and go on without honoring that sacrifice, some of the children, begin doing what their loved one did for them and offering themselves up for service. This is obviously an event that has transformed our world, our country and so many lives in such a deep, deep, deep way. We are anticipaing another Moment Of Silence about a minute from now. As we await that moment, well takive live again. Monica, we know the president plans to address troops in alaska later today as we makes his way back from his overseas summit. What will his message be for the country today . Reporter the president is expected to address about a thousand service members, their families, First Responders at an Air Force Base in anchorage, alaska where he will be talking to them about how today is a day to reflect, to think about this sense of renewal and really to honor the resolve of the American People and those who lost so much on that day 22 years ago. Now, of course, this is a little bit less traditional for the president since he is wrapping up that overseas travel, but hes doing this event in alaska because its basically a way for him to mark the occasion while entering u. S. Airspace and as quickly as he can on that somer day. He will be there while Vice President harris monica, please stand by. We want to take another Moment Of Silence. [ bell tolling ] [ Moment Of Silence ]. Joan donna griffin. Ramon b. Grijalvo. David joseph okay. That was a Moment Of Silence marking the moment flight 93 crashed in shanksville or near shanksville, pennsylvania, when those brave passengers confronted the hijackers of that flight and they continue to read the names of nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on that fateful day. Monica, please continue. Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff will represent the Biden Administration. Hell be there as part of that ceremony. Vice president harris paid her respects at ground zero in New York City. First Lady Jill Biden went to participate in the traditional Wreath Laying Ceremony at the pentagon earlier this morning. So all angles of this white house and administration honoring those participating in these memorial services, and the fact that the president is going to be speaking at a Military Base in alaska, in particular im told, is meant to send this message that so many people after 9 11 were inspired to join the armed forces, and that that is a Ripple Effect that isnt always talked about as much. So thats something the white house wants to honor today, and the president will certainly thank those who so bravely will be a part of that day and the response, but also in the years and decades since when it comes to that public service. He will mark that moment there before returning here to the white house later today where there is a small memorial, two american flags draped over the north portico here to honor that. The Biden Administration also is announcing today, pledging about 4 million to the New York City memorial and museum there through part of a federal program, continuing to support that as everybody is thinking of those who lost their lives, the families and, again, looking back, but also trying to recognize the strength of those all these years later. Of course, the Health Effects are still impacting so Many Americans who were part of the response that day and the days that followed. So many lives lost in the years after 9 11 because of the toxins that were at the site. Rehema, whats really also quite interesting is that the work still continues today to identify remains of those who were lost at ground zero. This has been a painstaking mission for two decades now. What can you tell us about those efforts . Reporter thankfully, for two families, just friday the mayor and Chief Medical Examiner announced they had identified the remains of two people that died on that day as a result of enhanced dna technology. Theyve been able to match these remains with that of a man and woman. The families of these victims have asked their names not be released at this point. But it is as you point out, ana, this is an ongoing task for the city. There are about a thousand Human Remains that are still unidentified. Authorities say that task is going to go on endlessly until they have identified everyone. In the interim, as you also point out, Tens Of Thousands of families are still feeling Health Effects from what happened here at ground zero. Sadly, we know more than 4,000 people have died as a result of 9 11 illnesses. Even in the fire department, their casualties continue, now up to 341 who have died since this day 22 years ago, on this day, 343 New York City firefighters died. While this may be over for some people, its not over for Tens Of Thousands of people in this country because the illnesses go on, the pain of death goes on, and the memory continues about what happened here on September 11th in 2001. So well put. Rehema, i know the new York Fire Department added 43 names to the memorial just this year. Rehema ellis, monica alba, thank you both for being part of this remembrance. Well continue to monitor events and bring you additional live moments as they happen right here on msnbc. Were also following the Breaking News out of morocco this morning where the death toll from the devastating earth quick has now topped 2,400. Thousands more were injured as buildings collapsed during fridays 6. 8 magnitude earthquake. So now an urgent and International Effort to under way to rescue and help as many people as possible with many survivors now forced to sleep on the streets after their homes were destroyed. Here you see desperation as hundreds lined up earlier this morning for basic aid like food and clothes. Joining us from morocco is nbcs raf sanchez. Raf, what are you seeing, what are you hearing now that youve arrived there . We are seeing devastation all across the disaster zone. As you said, the moroccan military updating the death toll to 2,400 this morning. That number is climbing. Some of the worst damage weve seen is in remote mountain communities. To get here, you have to drive up a treacherous winding road. It is that remoteness which is complicating the race against time to find survivors. This morning the desperate search for survivors entering a critical phase. Rescue teams from morocco and Around The World racing to make every minute count. Its now been more than 48 hours since this 6. 8 magnitude quake struck south of marrakech. The most powerful tremor in this region for more than a hundred years sending locals and tourists alike running for their lives. This Wedding Singer cut off mid song. Petrified. Some people were crying and screaming. Reporter the worst of the devastation in remote villages in the high Atlas Mountains where adobe homes couldnt withstand the force of the quake. Moments of exhausted joy when survivors are found in the rubble. But also heartbreak when rescuers arrive too late. Working in these situations, Search And Rescue is still of paramount importance. Reporter we traveled up a winding Mountain Road to reach the village of moulay brahim. Locals say at least 40 have been killed here, more than 1 of the population. Reporter among them, this mans three daughters, baby son and wife. Im all alone now he says. I had a home and a family. Now i have nothing. This i. D. Card, the only photograph he has left. The u. N. Says 300,000 people across the region were impacted by the quake. In small villages and major cities, many families are still sleeping in the streets, terrified that aftershocks could yet bring their homes crashing down. Ana, in terms of half shock, you can see the house behind me is partially collapsed. It wouldnt take much for it to collapse completely. The family who lives there have been sleeping in tents off to my right here for three nights now. They have no idea when, if ever, they will be able to return to hair home. That is the situation for so many families all across this region right now. So painful to see some of those images and to understand what really happened to so many of their homes and their loved ones. Raf sanchez, thank you. Joining us with mill lall lali, a San Francisco Restaurant Owner who has family in marrakech. And Caroline Holt from the International Federation of the red cross and red crescent society. Murad, thank you forgetting up to be part of this. I know its been a stressful few days for you. How is your family doing and what are they telling you about what happened . Thank you for having me. My family, thankfully, is very safe. They were not in the house when the quake happened. From my communications with them, the devastation is rampant. Everybody is affected. Everybody knows somebody who either lost some family members, some friends or lost a home. The situation is very dire, and i dont even think the horrible images that are shown on tv and on social media tell the real story of whats happening. In terms of human lives that are lost, the number is climbing. Officially its around 2,500 people who have lost their lives. I think at the end of the day, when you talk to people on the ground, they know for a fact there are people still buried under the rubble. People that used to make sounds are not making sounds anymore. So they cannot be declared officially dead until they are pulled out from under the rubble. So that number im expecting to climb. Ive been in contact with the Moroccan Embassy in washington, and theyre telling me the same thing. Ive been in contact with the State Department and im hearing stories that this numb bler climb significantly when everything is settled. We keep holding out hope as especially we see some of these videos of rescues that have taken place, and that work continues to try to reach people who may be drapd under the rubble. What goes through your mind when you see just how torn apart morocco is by this historic earthquake . For me its really hard to watch because i grew up in marrakech, im from marrakech. I know these neighborhoods that are shown on tv and on the screens all over the place. I can recognize the alleyways. The village that your reporter has spoken out i used to go there pretty much every couple months. I know what those homes meant to not just the people who lived in them, but also from a culture perspective. These are remote villages, remote communities. They have their own dialect. They dont even speak the moroccan dialect. Going there was like witnessing life from hundreds of years ago, and that was really special. These are not people connected to the world through the internet or wifi or iphone or ipads. They are people who live their live sustainably. They grow their own food, raise their own animals, they have their own schooling systems. Theyre very, very traditional in their ways. Im afraid most of it will be lost. At the least they will be displaced where they cant live the way they used to live any longer. We see the damage is so severe really throughout the areas impacted. But it does vary in some images. It appears like some buildings were reduced to dust. Whats your sense of why this earthquake was so, so devastating and so deadly . Well, you have to think about it from different perspective. When these homes and vees villages were put up hundreds of years ago, thinking about seismically retrofitting the buildings was not something on their minds. These are adobe buildings, buildings that are built to keep people from the heat of the summer and the cold of the winter. The walls are really think and made with clay and hay and materials that are not theyre heavy. When there is an earthquake like this, everything crumbles. Theres nothing that will keep the walls up, nothing that will keep the ceilings up. Morocco and especially marrakech has witnessed tremendous growth in tourism and people from other countries loving the country, falling in love with the country and they decided to come and move in and buy homes. The Construction Business just bloomed over the last 20 years. There were a lot of homes that were built rapidly to accommodate the demand. I think thats part of the problem. So its a doubleedged sword where the old homes crumbled because theyre old and the new homes crumbled because theyre not built in a way that is sustainable. Its all so sad to see. Thank you so much for taking the time. We wish you and your family all The Very Best in the recovery process. Appreciate you. Thank you for having me. Let me turn to caroline now. What is your reaction to what we just heard from m. Urad . Devastating. The images tell a thousand words. The bravery of the Search And Rescue teams, the emotional impact this is having on the families, we know that Search And Rescue window is only a limited one, and really its a race against time because the next two days really are the space in which we will find people alive under the rubble if they are still there. It is critically important that were able to reach those remote villages and get to those Atlas Mountains where the epicenter was. Also, as your reporter suggested, the devastation that will meet the Search And Rescue teams there is not necessarily known in its full extent at this point. So tell us about the work your organization is doing, and what is the biggest need as you understand it right now for the Hundreds And Thousands of people affected by this quake . Were working through our partner on the Ground T Moroccan Red Crescent who are working in close coordination with the government of morocco, the army, the Civil Defense service. The needs are clear. Search and rescue, critical to find the people still alive under the rubble, but also taking care of those that survived. There are many people with significant injuries be that head wounds or broken bones, and really triaging those people to identify the worst kaess, ensure they receive the medical support that they require, and then carrying out first aid in often makeshift medical facilities that are available to the local teams, certainly the moroccan red crescent to patch people up in the way we most effectively can. Mental health and psychosocial report is also a critical part of this because people will relive that trauma time and time again as those aftershocks are felt. For those that have survived, its food, its water and its shelter. Caroline holt, really appreciate the time. Thank you very much for joining us. Best of luck to all of those who are with your workization trying fast and furiously to make a difference on the ground. When were back in just 60 second, killer on the loose. Now to the urgent manhunt for a convicted murderer in pennsylvania. Danelo cavalcante has now changed his appearance. Authorities have again expanded the search area after he was captured on a former coworkers doorbell camera on saturday night. You can see how is now clean shaven, looking quite a bit different than when he first went on the run. Police say he stole a van, travelling more than 20 miles from the area officials have been scouring. Lets bring in msnbcs marissa para. How are police explaining him breaching the perimeter again. Reporter they were pressed on this during yesterdays press conference. In short, they defended their actions. Ill get to their reasons wooi in just a moment. First, i want to let you listen to their response. Here it is. There are a number of challenges in any investigation. No perimeter is 100 secure ever. We did a very good job. Im not going to make an excuse to you. I wish it had not happened. That perimeter was just a little ways away from where we are right now. This is sort of a Nervous System of where all of those decisions are made. It was longwood gardens, these are botanical gardens. They had a fourmile perimeter on saturday. They had confirmed sightings. They thought they were getting close. There are challenges they mentioned in the press conference. They say this is why he was able to make his escape. He said, one, its densely wooded in there. These are botanical gardens. They had the rain which made it hard for canines with humidity, it was harder for equipment to work. The rain maid it harder for the canines to detect his scent. They werent sure exactly how he made his mistake, they said due to those factors they did the best that they could. They said they continued to do so. I understand police are confirming cavalcantes sister has been arrested and is facing deportation. We have two confirmed sightings at his former coworkers homes. Do we know if hes getting help from friends, family members, coworkers . Reporter what i can tell you is Law Enforcement and state police are trying to make it as difficult as possible for him to get help. We know that he has appeared at the door. We saw the images of him. His appearance has drastically changed. Hes cleanly shaven. Hes been procuring items, including a van, by stealing it. He found the keys on the seat of the fan he took. We know he has stolen food from some of the homes he was ransacking earlier this week. Theres no confirmation at this moment in time that has been released publicly on anyone helping him. Officers have made it clear. If anyone is found helping them, they will prosecute him and are doing everything they can to make it as hard as possible on him. Hurricane mar lee is now a 3. This has already been an historic hurricane, going from a category 1 to a cat 5 hurricane in one days time. Its that incredible and rare show of power over the warm waters that have meteorologists remaining on alert. Only six other Atlantic Hurricanes have intensified that much in such a short time. The list includes some of the most infamous, maria, matthew, felix and wilma. Nbc meteorologist Michelle Grossman is tracking this system as it spins north. Explain this erratic behavior of lee and what are we going to expect here in the u. S. How might it impact us . Its a big storm, big in size, big in power. It weakened to a category 4 on saturday, category 2 on sunday. Then it started to strengthen once again. Were still at a major hurricane. We could see another category 4 and then its going to weaken. Theres a couple of ingredients that weakened it. We had wind shear that tears apart the system. Right now were looking at 120mileperhour winds. Thats a powerful storm, category 3. The location 340 miles north of the leeward islands. Its far enough north where were seeing indirect impacts to the leeward islands. Its moving slowly. The kremlin confirming north Koreas Kim Jongun will visit russia. Lets bring in janis mackey frayer. What do we know now about this visit . Reporter the kremlin is confirming what was already widely expected, ana, that north Korean Leader kim jongun will visit russia to meet with Vladimir Putin at his invitation, likely to happen on the sidelines of an Economic Forum in vladivostok which is where they met in 2019. Meanwhile, President Biden is on his way to alaska this morning after wrapping up his trip to asia. He made stops in india and vietnam, both sharing a border with china. Biden saying he is not trying to contain china. Also notable at the g20 summit in india, the group sent a softer message to russia this year than id did last year, stopping short of condemning the war in ukraine. Lets bring in nbc news senior White House Correspondent kelly odonnell. Kelly, talk to us about the Key Takeaways and what was achieved on this trip. Reporter for the president , this has been an important trip to position the u. S. In the way he wants this part of the world to see the country, and that is a more reliable partner than china. Certainly when youre talking about visits to a place like vietnam where theres a border with china, a strong trading partner. Having a new level of relationship is a significant step forward, especially when you consider the five decades of history since the vietnam war. Open conflict then. Now partnership at a new level with Business Investment and a recognition of a more formal relationship with vietnam. Thats significant for this piece of the trip. Coming out of the g20 where the president was able to meet with and speak with many leaders, a lot of the same message about the u. S. Being a partner as a counterweight to china. Obviously the relationship between the u. S. And china is one that has been fraught with competition and concern. President biden was very del kate in the way he addressed it saying he did not want to contain or harm china and recognizing that president xi jinping has his own problems at home. Ana. Kelly odonnell, thank you. Hopeful news out of turkey where rescuers have been trying to bring an American Caver to the surface after he fell ill more than a half mile from the ground. Mark dickey is now less than 600 feet from the surface of the morca cave. They had to use explosives to try to widen passages and allow a stretcher through. Nbc news Foreign Correspondent molly hunter is following these developments. How much longer do rescuers think it will take to bring mark dickey out. The rescuers on the scene tell our producer that theyre aiming to rescue him by tonight. Its about 5 30 local time. Theres a lot of activity. The Chief Medical Officer of the less queue team also tells nbc news, ana, that they already plan to have him airlifted when he comes to the surface. Theyve already chosen the hospital. Hes about 600 feet from below the surface. Were talking more than 200 people from eight countries, 150 of those are serious experts, they say the remaining 600 feet is a slightly gentler, if you can say that, kind of incline to what theyve currently already brought him up. Its been very vertical. Rescuers using small explosives, very tight quarters. We understand that mike dickey is cocooned into a stretcher very tightly, they call it Patient Packaging as they bring him up. Were staying on top of it. This morning President Joe Biden is shifting his reelection strategy. President biden has made an effort to avoid mentioning his predecessor who he calls the other guy. The bayne will begin to argue that trump and his allies are a threat to democracy as part of an effort to beef up fundraising. Lets bring in former republican congressman from pennsylvania charlie dent and former democratic congressman from new york, max rose. Congressman rose, youre here with me so you get to start. What do you make of the shift in focus . Was ignoring trump not working. This is common sense and this is the way politics works. You always generate more enthusiasm, excitement, particularly amongst a small donor base when youre running against something. Whether thats a good thing or not, its kind of ir relevant. Iments just the truth of politics. Certainly when it comes to what they have to achieve from an electoral map perspective, making sure people understand the enormity of the decision before them and the threat not just donald trump but the maga Republican Movement poses to democracy, i think this is the correct strategy and its also what worked in 2022 and 2020 to a certain extent. Whats taken so long . Why the shift . Why the need to shift . Its crazy to think how long the political cycle is right now. But the more that President Biden and his campaign can elevate him as to what he he he is the president of the United States and the less he can be in the trenches, and his campaign is in the trenches, the better off he s. I think this republican primary has been a circus, has been laughable, and the degree to which trump and his crazy politics are steam rolling this primary, its not a bad thing that people are focusing on that at all, certainly when you get into a general election. That general electorate does not like crazy. The democrats have successfully learned this lesson. The republicans have not yet learned it, and theyll suffer the consequences. Speaking of the general election, congressman dent, right now President Biden and trump are even in the polls. Some democrats are alarmed by this, others are down playing it saying its still very early on. Do you think trump is really as strong in a general election as these recent headtohead polls suggest . I dont think that donald trump is as strong as these polls suggest. We have a few trials to go here yet. There could be some convictions. It is early. If im joe biden and the democrats, i still would be concerned. Theres a lack of enthusiasm for joe bidens candidacy. Were seeing that a lot of the democrat establishment is fully behind joe biden, but a lot of democratic voters want someone else. Conversely what was the republican establishment want Someone Other than donald trump but a very stubborn plurality of Republican Voters want donald trump. This the a conundrum for the party. Biden clearly has deficiencies as a candidate. As max said, theyre not going to have a hard time selling bidens agenda. The ira, the c. H. I. P. S. Act. At the end of the day, its ooes going to be about making donald trump unacceptable. Donald trump and his maga horde want to steel the country. Vice president Kamala Harris was responding this weekend to gop attacks about her ability to serve should there be a need. Here is what she said to say. Theyre honing in on you. Why do you think that is . How do you respond to those attacks . Thats not about policy. Thats about you. Listen, this is not new. Theres nothing new about that. They feel the need to attack because theyre scared that we will win based on the merit of the work that joe biden and i and our administration has done. Congressman dent, why do you think republicans have been targeting harris . I dont recall people targeting mike pence. Look, i dont think most people base their vote for president on the Vice President ial nominee or candidate. I remember george h. W. Bush was vilified as a wimp when he was Ronald Reagans running mate. Dan quayle was picked on, said he wasnt ready. George h. W. Bush became Vice President and president and quayle became Vice President. It didnt really matter. I dont think this is going to be about the Vice President at all. It never is. Maybe this year will be different because of joe bidens age. Count me as very skeptical. Theyll make a lot of noise about her, joe biden is too old, hes not going to finish his term, president harris. I dont think thats going to really motivate the vote in the general election. I know thats what republicans are going to push. Maybe thats a throwaway line. But its not going to be a Driving Issue i think at the end of the day. You think it doesnt matter. It doesnt explain why theyre doing it. Congressman rose, whats your take . No one makes decisions in this business in a willynilly way. Theyre looking at the data. What theyre seeing is theres tremendous support and strength around the Biden Administrations accomplishments, the way in which theyve saved the economy, the way in which they fought inflation or the way in which theyve achieved unprecedented job growth. So theyre grasping at straws, trying to make this ridiculous assertion that the Vice President of the United States isnt ready to take the number one job. Everyone knows thats not an argument thats going to work. The reason why theyre still doing it is because they have absolutely no claim in their campaign other than craziness to appeal to this equally crazy republican primary electorate. Thats why theyre in such a difficult situation. Now, what i would push back on what my friend charlie said is that somehow when they talk about the choice before the American People, that its a consequence of a failure of their agenda. Absolutely not, but youve got to establish the choice. Its such a clear, stark choice. Its important they put that out there. Auto workers may walk off the job at the end of this week if their union doesnt reach a deal with detroits big three by friday. If that happens, expect significant disruption in the production of cars and trucks here in the u. S. Among the demands, the United Auto Workers want a 46 pay raise over four years. That would bring top Assembly Workers to 47 an hour. They also want 32hour workweeks but 40 hours paid and traditional pensions for new hires. Nbc News Business and Data Reporters brian cheung is following this story for us. So brian, how likely is a strike at this point . Yeah, well, Industry Analysts that ive heard from have said it doesnt look good in terms of avoiding a strike by the time the clock strikes midnight thursday into friday. Weve heard offers from all three of the auto makers that the union is trying to negotiate with. The unions asking for 46 compounded wage increases. At first it was ford that offered 9 , gm offered 10 , the maker of chrysler submitted an offer on friday morning that was 14. 5 . So you can see the incremental progress. 14. 5 to 46 , thats how wide the chasm is. They only have a few days to try to figure this out, ana. We mentioned 150,000 workers may be impacted here. So what does that mean for the rest of us . How long until consumers might feel the impact . Yeah, if they end up going on strike on friday we dont know how long that will last. The Immediate Impact is there would be no cars coming out of gm, ford or the is a lantus auto. For anybody trying to buy a new car, its already been really expensive, covid, we also saw the supply chain related snags after the pandemic lifted, lockdowns were lifted where that also led to a pretty high inflation in auto prices. This could only further exacerbate that. How immediate that would be remains to be seen, ana. Keep us posted. Thank you. And sweet american victory at the u. S. A former secret Service Agent who rode with president john f. Kennedy in the dallas motorcade is now telling his full story for the first time. Nbc correspondent liz kreutz has the details. 60 years after one of the most earth shattering days in modern american history, when president john f. Kennedy was assassinated in dallas in 1963. John f. Kennedy died at approximately 1 00 Central Standard time. Reporter former secret Service Agent paul landis who was with the president that day is opening up for the first time about what he witnessed. For decades the prevailing theory was that one bullet struck jfk and then hit Texas Governor John Connolly who was sitting in front of him. It became known as the magic bullet theory, which explained how one shooter could have fired all the shots. The theory is based on this bullet being found on governor connollys gurney at the hospital. Now in a new book, landis says he knows how it got there. The 88yearold says he found that bullet lodged in the car seat behind where kennedy was killed. He took that bullet to the hospital and placed it on the president s gurney. It was a piece of evidence he tells the times, and i didnt want it to disappear or get lost. He says paul, youve got to make a decision and i grabbed it. Landis now says he thinks the bullet may have rolled from kennedys gurney to connollys meaning it may not have been the bullet that injured connolly. Dr. Aguilar you studied this case for years. How significant is this . I think this is a significant piece of new evidence to sport the idea there was more than one gunman. Reporter clint hill, the secret Service Agent who climbed on the back of the limo after kennedy was shot questions landiss story. Why do you have doubts about his account . Because if you check all the evidence statements, things that happened, they dont line up. It doesnt make any sense to me that hes trying to put it on the president s gurney. Fascinating.
