Big final ploy on capitol hill to overturn reality. This afternoon we learned 11 more gop allies of the president will break from the mainstream view of their own party and stan stand willing to contest some of the results of the Electoral College victory that declared joe biden president elect. Here are the 11 gop senators. Senatorselect were talking about. They want a tenday audit of the Election Results before they will certify the results. The names include staunch trump defenders like ron johnson of wisconsin, but also some surprises like oklahoma senator james languaford. The Trump Campaign wasted no time weighing in, thanking by name all of the senators who stood up to defend Donald Trumps Disinformation Campaign and distance from the reality of how this democracy actually works. And while that is big news, there is little chance that donald trump is staying past january 20th. What is certain, the high stakes of whats about to happen in Georgias Senate runoffs tuesday. Two seats that will determine which party will control the chamber. Its no surprise republican candidate Kelly Loeffler suggested this week that she supports the president s efforts. But it did provide this line of attack from her opponent. Well, you know, we keep i feel like i sound likely a broken record, but we keep reaching new lows. This is outrageous. And its outrageous that the sitting unelected senator of georgia, Kelly Loeffler, is not standing up for the voices of people in georgia. The fight ramping up. Our next Vice President , Kamala Harris, will be there tomorrow. And then monday comes the sitting president along with the man who will replace him in 18 days, president elect joe biden. Georgias runoffs are huge for biden. What happens tuesday night will set the stage for his entire first term and for his agenda. Look at the headlines donald trump has ignored for the past couple of weeks. More than 20 million americans infected with covid. At least three states have discovered that new strain first reported in the u. K. Vaccine distribution is dangerously behind schedule. Newly elected republican congressman died from covid19. And a man set off a bomb in nashville christmas day. All of that and nothing from this president but fake claims about voter fraud. Joining us now, beth fouhy, senior politics editor, and chris cad la go from politico. Is sahil, what are the republicans trying to accomplish . Alicia, these republicans are calling for the creation of a commission that could audit over ten days the results of the election in states they claim are disputed. They dont list the states, but we have an idea. Five or six states that the president has filed lawsuits in all over the country. Theyve been rejected by judges appointed by republican and democratic president s. They have had their day in court. Their efforts havent worked and this is the lastditch ploy here, lastditch play to move to overturn the results of the election. Before there was only josh hawley and a group of house conservatives on board. Now there are 11 republicans on board. Some of the names are interesting. James langford, hes up for reelection in 2022 in a red state. This tells you about the politics of running in a republican primary in that state. This move has faced aggressive pushback from republican senators including mitt romney and pat toomey. Ben sasse of nebraska called it a loaded gun pointed at selfgovernment, raising questions about what this could mean for the future of american democracy, alicia. Beth, a short time ago our white house colleague, Kelly Odonnell obtained a statement about todays news in the senate from the Vice President s chief of staff, mark short. Im going to read it to you. Vice president pence shares the concerns of millions of americans about voter fraud. The Vice President welcomes the efforts of members of the house and senate to use the authority they have under the law to raise objections and bring forward evidence before the congress and the American People on january 6th. I wonder, beth, what you make of that statement in light of the what we know about the Vice President essentially pushing back trying to get out from under this lawsuit that would have allowed him to contest these results. Right. Its pretty amazing, alicia. Vice president pence and these 11 senators are culture conservatives. Theyre conservative warriors and i question how any of this is conservative in any way. The republicans typically support federalism, states rights, states enacting their own elections and validating the results. Now republican senators and by inference, Vice President pence, is calling into question when its right for them to state into another state to question the integrity of the outcome there. None of this is in keeping with traditional republican conservative values, which to me says that trumpism is very different from conservatism, and thats essentially what these senators and at this point Vice President pence are espousing, to help him at the expense of the voters to cast these ballots. By the way, all of these members of congress and members of the senate who were elected in these same elections, none of them is suggesting their own election was fraudulent, so theres a big disconnect there. Were seeing that play out in georgia as well as the republicans trying to tell people to vote. But at the same time you have the president questioning the results of the november election there. I want to read you, chris, a statement from the Biden Campaign, sort of look at it as a contrast to that statement from pence. The Biden Campaign saying this stunt wont change the fact that president elect biden will be sworn in on january 20th, and these baseless claims have already been examined and dismissed by trumps own attorney general, dozens of courts, and Election Officials from both parties. Chris, talk to me a little about the positioning of the Biden Campaign as they contend with this charade. Yeah f we had to mock up a statement that we thought the Biden Incoming administration would draw up in response to these 11, now 12 republicans in the senate coming forward with this, it would be this exactly, dismissing it as a stunt, talking about how biden and vicepresident elect Kamala Harris will be taking office january 20th no matter what happens. This is a way for them not to add fuel to what the republicans are doing, what donald trump has consistently done in trying to contest this election. And i think it just sort of speaks to an underscores the way theyve come at this, which is dont feed it. We saw in this letter that came from the 11 republicans that they cited the statistic of 39 of americans not feeling good about the results of the election thinking that theres some sort of fraud or impropriety there. Were getting an echo chamber mode where as long as donald trump is saying that, of course theres going to be a certain percentage of people who believe it. By joe biden not weighing in, not feeding it, hes hoping to keep the number low and eventually sort of drive that number down as he takes office. You have Mitch Mcconnell really urging Senate Republicans to get as far away from this as possible. And i think about it in the context of all of these writeups that say, you know, once trump is gone, Mitch Mcconnell goes back to being the most powerful republican in washington or that Mitch Mcconnell will take on his old positioning as the opponent of an Incoming Democratic president. Does the fact that there are 12 republicans who are choosing to go against his wishes say anything about the grip that mcconnell has on his own caucus . I mean, it says a lot about how these republicans see their own political survival going forward. And the fact that some of them seem to be prioritizing that above all else. Mcconnell in a private call with republicans a few days ago said this was going to be the most consequential vote hes cast in his career, whos been in politics for the better part of four decades and indicates his view of the importance of continuity for american democracy, which is really what this all comes down to. Here in georgia where i am right now, this is not particularly helpful to the republicans. Kelly loeffler was asked about this earlier and she kind of said everythings on the table, not taking a position whether hes going to vote to object. Shes caught between loyalty to President Trump, which Republican Voters absolutely demand. You cant lose those voters. But you also cant go hard right in a state like georgia which just voted for a democratic president ment you have to win voters who are willing to support democrats and who, by definition, are not going to believe baseless and unsubstantiated claims of fraud. This sidelines a light into the stakes, the incredibly high stakes of this election in georgia which will determine which Party Controls the senate. If both democrats win, it will be a Democraticled Senate with the tiebreaking vote of vicepresident elect Kamala Harris. If one of the two republicans holds on, it will still be Mitch Mcconnell at the helm, alicia. Beth, it strikes me, and im sure it strikes you, that when you read the excerpts or hear the sounds of republicans on the stump in georgia, you sort of hear two things. You hear Bernie Sanders and you hear brett kavanaugh, and it feels like that is all very focus group tested. I wonder your sense, beth, of how President Trumps actions are playing out in georgia, and what it is that is ultimately going to motivate republicans to vote or not to vote in this election. You know hes going down there on monday and hes got this mixed message going on right now. Hes allegedly there to go encourage republicans, encourage georgians to vote for loeffler and perdue. But knowing President Trump and the fact that he was there not that long ago, he nurses his own grievances and says that the republican governor and the republican secretary of state botched the elections. They shouldnt even be in office anymore. He called the Senate Election invalid. So whether Republican Voters or anybody to make of what the president s trying to do here. Meanwhile, because he is so polarizing, theres a good chance his appearance there at the 11th hour could motivate a lot of folks to come out and vote for the democrats. So its kind of a risky move that the president is making right now, but he loves the adulation and the crowd. Hes going to get a lot of attention and thats all he cares about at this point. Chris, i want to connect these two stories by invoking some of the sound that sahil referenced earlier. Lets take a listen when a reporter asked Kelly Loeffler if she would support the challenge to electors on january 6th. Look, everything is on the table right now. I said that i will keep fighting for this president. Hes fought for us and put america first. Were going to keep fighting for him. Chris, you have this race on tuesday. On january 6th. You have this conversation about whether or not to challenge these results. Where does that leave Kelly Loeffler . Hes the really in a bind here. Part of it is needing to signal as strongly as she can that shes supportive of the president , her name clearly missing from the letter the republicans put out, so saying everything is on the table, well have to see about that and see if she weighs in before the election happens. But we have President Trump out there whos saying that the election was invalid, as others have noted, and now saying that these two senators who advance, who are up again, and trying to rally republicans to turn out. We know that the thing about the Republican Party and particularly in this georgia race, theyre counting on a big election day turnout. And i think the problem for loeffler and for perdue is that they need to be as supportive as they can of the president. But hes at the same time throwing wrenches in there, of course, blaming Republican Leadership for coming out and not supporting the 2,000 checks, coming out and blasting the republican governor of georgia, coming out and calling on a primary challenge for john thune and that was obviously a warning to the senators up in 2022 like langford and ron johnson and kennedy. So all of these republicans are walking a fine line and its basically all about trump at this point. Beth, i dont want to lose the big picture here, which is that what these senators are doing is bad for our democracy. I wonder, as you talk to your sources on capitol hill, do you think there is any interest . Do you think theres any appetite forth being consequences for the gop senators that are going along with this charade . Not so far. And theyre playing a very short game, obviously. I mean, yes, 2022 is hovering over a lot of these guys and they dont want to be primaried, but the longterm damage that theyre doing is extraordinary. What theyre essentially saying is, if you dont like the outcome of an election, if your side loses, call the whole thing fraudulent, call the who he will go the whole thing rigged. That is a longterm consequence of this. So, okay, these guys might get away with not seeing a primary in 2022, but what are they doing overall to the longterm integrity and belief that our country does this right . This particular election by all accounts was conducted as fairly and with as much integrity as it possibly could have, in the middle of a pandemic, mind you. Sahil, beth, chris, thank you all so much for spending some time with us. Next, it is slow going on for operation warp speed. Plus, what we know about the new strain of covid19. Where is it . Why do doctors believe it is more aggressive . Plus this. It seems like your education pretty much determines what your potential is. They have the talent, but not the degree. An updated Vaccine Distribution strategy has begun and its raising some concerns. Nbcs sarah harmon is in london. Sarah, whats the latest . Reporter hi, alicia. The u. K. Continues to fight against that new mutated strain of covid19, which we now know has been detected in at least 30 other countries, including the u. S. Here in london, the situation is particularly dire. They reactivated the nightingale Field Hospital and told Primary School children in london that they wont be returning to the classroom after winter break. Thats because Research Shows this new strain of covid is more prevalent in people under 20. Theyve also made a big change to the vaccination schedule with the Pfizer Vaccine. Instead of giving the doses 21 days apart as pfizer recommends, theyre going to allow up to 12 weeks between the the first and second dose. As you can imagine, thats proved controversial. The criticism really boils down to two things, science and consent. Pfizer has said it cant guarantee the safety or the efficacy of using the vaccine on this schedule, and doctors here in the u. K. Are saying many of their patients consented to this on the manufactures schedule and now theyre changing the rules of the game after the first dose. I talked to one gp in london today who told me he will continue to give his patients who have already had the first dose their second dose on the initial threeweek schedule because thats what he obtained consent for. A bit of hope. On monday the u. K. Will begin rolling out that Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine. They have more than half a million doses at the ready, and a lot of people here are pinning their hopes to a quick and successful rollout and hopefully better days ahead. Alicia . With me now, dr. Leo in a so he la, adviser for covid act now and the National Plasma project. This new strain has been found to be more contagious, first spotted in the u. K. , already in three states here. What do we still not know about it . Thanks for having me. Happy to be here. I wish i had some better news to share. Unfortunately, we already predicted this new strain would be in the u. S. , likely in the u. S. When the researchers in the u. K. First found it there. We now know its here. Its more infectious. What does that mean . Its that the virus is even more powerful than we thought it was before. What we dont know is if this new strain would actually lead to a more severe form of the disease or not. Reports that we have received this week from the u. K. Has shown that this strain is more likely to infect people that are younger. So the jury is still out, what that actually means for us now, but we have to be more cautious than ever. Im afraid that january is going to be the toughest month in the pandemic so far. We know that its in three states. Is it safe to assume that it is in other states in this country . It is my understanding that a normal test for covid19 doesnt pick this up. It has to go through genome testing. How would we even know its in various states throughout this country . Youre right. We dont know if its, you know, if its just in california, colorado, and florida. What we do know is it spreads so quickly that you cant actually contain it without contact tracing, without testing. Im afraid some of these tests that we have already approved in the United States may not be picking up this new strain. We perhaps will need to update those tests as well. What does it mean for the vaccines that are currently available . Well, the vaccines the vaccinemakers are confident that this new strain will be covered. But in case we need to update those, because of the technology, it would be easy to update the vaccines. So far the makers are confident theres no change in sight. The u. K. Defending their decision to push back citizens second dose of the vaccine from 21 days to 12 weeks. Pfizer only tested for efficacy when both doses were given in that shorter time frame. So from your perspective, will spacing out the two doses so far apart make the vaccine any less reliable . Well, we still dont know. And there is a consensus. Lead physicians have disagreed on whether or not we should, number one, stockpile on the vaccines we have available and secure two doses for everyone, or should we just give every vaccine that we have available for people in the United States in order for us to at least have some immunity against this virus as quickly as possible. And we still dont know. As you said, the studies that were conducted with dose vaccines have not tested this. For me, i think that we should yeah, go ahead. Finish your thought. I just i just was just going to say that we still have yet to see a robust vaccination plan and campaign. We have not had that delivered in the u. S. Yet, and we are in 2021 already. So im concerned that you were headed exactly where i was headed, which is that President Trump, Health Specialists and operation warp speed hope to have 20 million americans vaccinated by now. In reality, fewer than 3 million have been. So your big picture, why the delay . Thats right. Its so frustrating. We have been advocating for folks to stay at home and shelter in place. Back in march when we asked folks to stay at home, 15 days to flatten the curve, the population did that. When we asked drugmakers to deliver safe and effective vaccines, they did that. What didnt happen is the federal administration to hold their end of the bargain, to deliver these plans and these strategies and deliver those vaccines into peoples arms. We have millions of millions of viles of safe and effective vaccines in warehouses. If you ask the average american when theyre going to get the vaccine, people dont know. Theres no clarity. And thats really frustrating. Doctor, thank you so much for your time tonight. Ahead, two officers have been fired in connection to the Breonna Taylor case. Was justice served . For months taylors family called for justice in her case wanting officers involved in her death to not only be fired, but to face charges. This week the Louisville Police department is taking steps to fire two of the officers involved in her controversial shooting death in march. Nbcs Gabe Gutierrez reports. Reporter the louisville metro Police Department is expected to formally remove to officers, one of them detective miles cosgrove, fired the shot that ended her life according to the fbi. The other, detective joshua james, whose controversial warrant brought officers to taylors home. Both served pretermination letters informing them of the decision. His attorney providing no further comment. Meanwhile, a lawyer for detective james is speaking out, calling the decision unjust. What we have is a he said and a she said situation. Like, was you even in breonnas favor at all . Taylor family attorney calling the chiefs decision courageous. Another step for justice for Breonna Taylor. It is still our hope that the officers will be charged. Reporter Breonna Taylor was killed by police in march during a botched raid where officers forced entry into her apartment. Police fired 32 shots after taylors boyfriend fired a single shot with a licensed weapon. He says he feared an intruder was in the home. The city announced new reforms, including a ban on socalled noknock warrants. It also agreed to a 12 million civil settlement with taylors family. That was nbcs Gabe Gutierrez reporting. With me now, a former prosecute and Senior Legal Council with the grassroots law project. Also an i was the and msnbc contributor and the host of the podcast undistracted. Yodit, what do we know about the officers, the language . Will they be fired . If so, when . I definitely think that theyre going to be fired considering the fact that the interim chief generalry based her decision to terminate their employment on the findings of several investigations and interviews. So i doubt that the officers and their attorneys will be able to say convince her otherwise. The problem with the intent to terminate, however, its going to take a long time. Its going to take several months because Public Employees such as Police Officers are entitled to due process under state and federal laws. Because they have a property right in their jobs, they cant simply be terminated without pretermination hearings, and these officers are going to have these hearings with the interim chief on monday where they, along with their counsel, will be able to plead their case. Theyre going to be able to present additional information, mitigating factors. At that point the chief will then decide whether to finalize their termination. But at that point the officers would then still be able to appeal that termination to a local board, police board, and that board would grant them another hearing. If the board then votes to terminate, then the officers still can appeal that decision to a circuit court. So it takes quite a while. Its a long and drawnout process, but ultimately they will be fired and i think it was a great move on the part of the interim chief. Brittany, you have been providing context for us and you have been clear that theres no justice for Breonna Taylor, there can only be accountability and reform. What do you make of the latest developments in that context and what more still needs to be done . Yodit laid out the fact that Police Officers get a lot of due process in these situations. We have to remember that Breonna Taylor got absolutely none, that all of the officers that are guilty of killing her that night and of putting kenneth walkers, her boyfriend, in that position, they decided to be judge, jury, and executioner. Tameka palmer, her aunt, her sister, none of them had an opportunity to speak up for her, to attest to her character, to her personhood. Breonna taylor was an essential worker in the city of louisville who did far more to protect and serve her community than the officers that killed her. So im certainly glad to see theres been progress on the things that her family have been requesting, specifically around moving to fire these officers. But they still have the opportunity to appeal. Their pensions are still unfortunately available to them. As you said, alicia, i have been a broken record on this and i will remain so. Justice is a living, breathing Breonna Taylor. Anything less is not accountability. Yodit, when we look to a Biden Justice department, who do they need to be doing, not only to repair, but to reimagine civil rights in this country . Well, they need to put progressive people in place that make these decisions. The grassroots law project had 55 Public Policy demands that they could implement within the first 100 days without a majority in congress. And that would require putting public defenders, civil rights attorneys in positions like the attorney general that can make these decisions on what they can do for federal charges, federal cases. I mean, we just learned that tamir rices case is now shut without any sort of conclusion for the family, and that was taking forever. They need to look at the time lines in which they get back to families who are looking for answers, but they also need to have progressive people in place, in positions of power to make these decisions. We need to look at these warrants on the local level. Noknock warrants should be banned as a whole in this country. So these other localities, these cities need to follow suit as louisville has now banned noknock warrants. They do more damage than good, and i believe that, you know, we need to hold these officers accountable. Brittany mentioned earlier that these officers being fired, they still keep their pensions. But we also need to make sure these officers stay fired. Its common practice that the officers go to neighborhoods counties and get hired like nothing ever happened. And so were going to have to repeat our calls for charges for these officers because they violated internal policies. I do believe in this case these officers have. Thank you both so much. New members of congress will be sworn in tomorrow. Its a new year riddled with many of the same problems of last year. Congress is still in a fight over giving americans 2,000 relief checks as Senate Republicans blocked a house pief passed bill to increase the amount of direct payments. And in that failure to approve those checks the homes of both Mitch Mcconnell and nancy pelosi have been vandalized with messages like wheres my money and we want everything. And a short time ago senator romney addressed the dozen members of his own party who are willing to reject the Election Results, calling their tactics an egregious ploy that dangerously threatens our democratic republic. So with all of that, how are you feeling about joining Congress Tomorrow . Well, first of all, alicia, thank you for having me back. Its always a pleasure to be with you and your audience. I am feeling thrilled by the opportunity to serve the people who elected me to United States congress and of course to do battle on behalf of the American People. For so much of what they urgently need, including the 2,000 survival check that you saw House Democrats try to get through only to be blocked by Mitch Mcconnell. Its why these georgia runoffs are so important on january 5th. Yeah, can you give me a sense because we keep hearing from democratic leadership that this is a down payment. So if this 600 check is a down payment, then what would real relief look like . Real relief would look like monthly checks until such time as the pandemic is over. You know, in my district, where it is extremely expensive to live, even a onetime 2,000 payment is not enough to help struggling families cover the cost of rent or mortgage or put food on the table for their children or cover the cost of child care, which is thousands of dollars on a monthly basis alone, especially for a family of four. And then of course we have to finally give state and local municipalities the aid that the federal government has the wherewithal to provide. In new york state we are facing what is a 13 billion budget shortfall, and we need the federal government to help do its part to make sure we can deliver essential government services. When you look at the race in georgia, i mean, weve talked with voters, weve talked with advocates that have been down there. But for you as you prepare your first year of governing, what do you feel is hinging on the outcome in georgia . The fate of this country, it is no exaggeration to say, largely hinges on what happens in these georgia runoffs. And that is because you have currently Mitch Mcconnell and republicans in that chamber, in the senate, obstructing common sense legislation. Whether it is covid19 relief that is urgently needed and in this context where were seeing a once in a century pandemic or whether it is common sense Gun Legislation to rein in the epidemic of gun violence that has really wrought great damage in so many of our communities in this country. And those are just a few things. Obviously, were facing a Climate Crisis unlike anything weve seen. And so everything hinges on what happens in georgia. Certainly no shortage of challenges. Cases of covid still surging daily. December became the deadliest month in america since the pandemic started. You got your first doses of the Pfizer Vaccine this week. What is your message to americans who are still wary about taking a Covid Vaccine at this point . My message is this. I understand wariness, especially in the black community, which has every reason to be suspicious given the history of this country and ongoing racism in the medical profession today. But i stand i sit before you today as an incoming member of the United States congress who has gotten the first dose of the Pfizer Vaccine. It is safe. My colleagues have gotten it. And i encourage everyone to get it. Its going to be required, in fact, in order for us to lift ourselves out of the worst economic crisis that beef seen since the Great Depression and obviously this Public Health crisis. In addition to your being sworn in, Congress Votes on the speaker of the house tomorrow. What is it you want to see from democratic leadership . Well, as you may know, im the youngest member of the House Democratic leadership and im really thrilled to be representing the voices and the concerns and the aspirations of a different generation than what weve used to seeing represented in the United States house of representatives. And what i hope to see and what i expect to see is what weve been seeing in recent days. Democrats fighting tooth and nail for the things we say we believe in, an economy that works for everybody including working families like the one i grew up in. Policies that reflect a belief in science. And also an adherence to the institutions like the department of justice and the rule of law that we had come to just take for granted before the past four years. So im really looking forward to continued leadership by the House Democrats, and wuhl see us fight really hard, especially under a bidenharris administration, for the things that we are doing in this country. Congressmanelect mondaire jones, i hope you have a great day tomorrow. Thank you for spending your day with us. More american voices after this. S.
