President s continued downplaying of it all. And well dig into that jawdropping headline out of michigan, a foiled plot to kidnap the sitting governor, revealing a brewing battle in the shadows on our own shores. This is american voices. For the First Time Since leaving walter reed, the president decided it was time to stump again, holding a Campaign Event from the white house balcony. Its the second possible covid spreading event hes held. The first is believed to be where he contracted the virus. Hundreds were on the south lawn today, screaming and cheering for the president who could still be shedding the virus just feet away. The administration has so far refused to tell us when the president last tested positive as america surpasses 215,000 lyes lost. Do you remember when he had his last negative test . I dont want to go backwards. The last negative test . I cant reveal that at this time. The doctors would like to keep it private since its his private have you been tested recently . Yeah. I just saw the doctors today. They have think im in great shape. Im in great shape. Did you test negative . And ill tell you, i took this regeneron. Its phenomenal. The last negative test, you dont have that. You dont know or you dont want to say . So we dont have that. Well, i dont personally know. It was just two weeks ago today that the president formally nominated his Third Supreme Court justice, amy coney barrett. Hardly a mask in sight. Five days later, we learned the president and first lady were infected, and since a dozen members of his staff have tested positive too. Meanwhile, joe biden earlier today condemning the president for not being transparent about his testing. While calling him out for not understanding what americans are going through. Americans deserves a president who understands what the people are going through. Youre facing real challenges right now, and the last thing you need is a president who exacerbates. The fact is the president can only see the world from park avenue. Joining me now from the white house is nbc news political reporter monica alba. Also with us alex thomson, National Political reporter for politico. Hayes brown, post of buzz cast and Lauren Gambino political reporter for guardian. I want to start with you, 20 minutes for this event that was very short in trump time. Was it expected to be only 20 minutes . It wasnt, alicia. In fact, the white house had told us to expect a slightly longer speech. So it was notable when the president wrapped up after those only 18 minutes that you reference. And we have to wait and see over the next couple of days how he is going to be able to do his typical campaign rallies. He is going to be on the road. His campaign announcing today with backtoback rallies monday, tuesday, and wednesday in key battleground states. And as ive covered him over the last few years, he normally speaks for anywhere from an hour to 90 minutes, sometimes even two hours. So a big question mark there about whether he really is healthy enough to do those lengthy kind of speeches. Today seemed to be a preview of sorts of what he may be able to do. But so critical to this conversation, alicia, is also what we dont know at this time. For so long, the doctors position had indicate head wouldnt return to public engagements until he was technically clear. And that would mean two or one negative test results. We havent gotten that. We should also point out we havent even gotten a memo or any Additional Information from the president s doctors all day yesterday or all day today. The last time we received a normal update was thursday evening. So many Unanswered Questions as you raised there in your intro, also pointing to this timeline to find out when the president last tested negative before his positive diagnosis. So we just have a better sense here of the exposure and all those events. But again, the white house and the Reelection Campaign going full steam ahead with getting him back on the road and clearing him to travel before actually providing the medical justification for that, it seems. One of the stops that he is expected to make, florida where i am on monday, any indication of what that event is going to look like . This is actually going to be a rescheduled event he was supposed to be in orlando, florida, just the day after he actually tested positive for coronavirus. So this is sort of a makeup event because he had to cancel that when he was ill and had to go to walter reed for that multiday stay in the hospital as he was recovering. This is absolutely going to be an event they wanted to do, focusing on this very important state. Had he been there last week, it was going to be his fourth city in florida that he was in as many weeks. Its something theyre going to be returning to of course in this final stretch. And he is going to be making all his typical pitches to florida, which also we should point out is now his official residence. When he changed from new york to florida, its a place the Trump Campaign feels if he doesnt do well in that state, his reelection hopes are really in question. So thats why you also had Vice President mike pence in the state today, visiting and doing several events. This is why they feel its great to have the president back on the road. Symbolically, his first major event back. And we should point out they expected in the thousands to attend back when that event was supposed to take place last week. As many as 12,000 people may be at this rally on monday. Wow, which weve seen as hallmarks from these events, very limited social distancing, if any. And even more inconsistent mask usage, alicia . Lauren, i think a lot of people are probably wondering what i am wondering, which is if you listen to the sound from the event earlier today, it sure sounded like a Campaign Event. How is the president managing to use that messaging in the peoples house . His aides have said this was absolutely a white house event. But as you heard, you have heard the chanting and the cheering as he came out with a law and order message which is very much central to his campaign messaging. He cast biden and democrats, he attacked democrats from this balcony, from the white house. And so, you know, trump said he said in recent interviews he really wants to get back on the trail as monica said, he has been angling to get back out there, and his campaign is behind joe biden and National Battleground state polls. So they just really want him to be as present as possible. But obviously, this is an incredibly risky event to hold. The president talked a little bit about that ride he took around walter reed last week. Take a listen. In that hospital, i was watching down over so many people, and i went out to say hello to those people. I took a little heat for it, but id do it again, let me tell you. Id do it again. Hayes, he says he would do it again. Whats been the response from inside the white house from republicans on capitol hill about the president really doubling down on what a lot of people thought was dangerous behavior . So you see a lot of distancing happening right now, actually, especially in terms of republicans in the senate trying to step away fry the president and his handling of the coronavirus as we get into these last few weeks of the election. Mitch mcconnell sort of green light last week when he said i havent been to the white house in weeks. We just talk on the phone. And i dont really agree with how theyve been so lax about coronavirus. And so i think that gave a lot of other republicans who are in tight races permission to step away from the Trump Administration on this. That doesnt mean that theyre going to speak out fully against him. It doesnt mean that they arent going to welcome him into their state if he does get back on the road and campaign in all of these places. But theyre very much aware that over the last few weeks, weve seen the president take a hit with certain groups such as seniors, which is why we saw that kind of bizarre video from him on twitter earlier this week, and why we saw mike pence at the largest Retirement Center in florida today. He is trying to shore back up consistencies and republicans arent quite believing that its going to be enough right at this moment. Alex, i want you to tie two stories together for me. You both have weve seen in the last ten days the president s diagnosis, the way he has handled that diagnosis. And then also the story from the times looking at his tax records, a story that continues to evolve. Today the latest installment looking at the ways that some companies private Interest Groups might have benefitted from their relationship with the president. Looking at that in the aggregate, how are those stories now shaping the final days of this campaign. Well, on the first story, ill say that trump is responding to catching the coronavirus much very similar to the way he has reacted to the country catching coronavirus, and that his response has been to try to power through this. He has ignored some of the advice of his own scientists in both cases. He has also hid certain information from the American People in both cases in order to try to espouse a more positive version. And so he is making a dramatic bet that the American People are going to give him credit that yes, maybe he would be a little bit reckless, but he is the guy to sort of power through this crisis and to restore america to precovid. Now joe biden obviously is making an incredibly different bet. Now when it comes to the tax issue, president trump, this is also started the seeds. This is from his own problems earlier four years ago when he promised to release his tax returns, never did. Got away with it, and now that is sort of coming back to haunt him in the final days of this race. Now joe biden is barely even talking about it. Yes, he is talking about park street versus main street. But he is sort of letting the times and the media sort of do his work for him and hoping that trump will be upset about it and talk about it even more. Monica, is the white house still contending with this tax story . Are they still pushing back on it . Or has coronavirus really taken their attention at this point . Aides and allies that i spoke to after the first debate were surprised that the tax story didnt take up more of the oxygen and attention at that event. They thought that was something they were going to have to respond to quite intensely. And exactly once the president and himself and his closest aide hope hicks was diagnosed with coronavirus, the story fully shifted. So they do expect it can come back. But i dont think there is anything that is breaking through just as intensely as the fact that the president , the first lady, dozens of there closest aides and contacts and people that they came into contact with in the last couple of weeks testing positive. That story just really i think resonates with every American Voter who themselves is going through whatever experience theyve had with the virus and health crisis, and making a judgment for themselves about what kind of leadership they want to see reflected because you really couldnt have two more different visions between the president and former Vice President joe biden who has of course made coronavirus the centerpiece of his campaign with just a couple of weeks to go. All right. Monica, alex, hayes, and lauren, thank you all for your time. Still ahead on american voices, the president says dont let covid19, quote, dominate you. Well introduce you to three people who beg to differ. Plus, the foiled plot to kidnap michigans governor. The men taken down for it shedding light on a brewing crisis in this country. And she is tough but is she likable . The predictable and frankly eye roll worthy fallout from the first and only Vice President ial debate. Te 1 in 2 kids is underhydrated. Universal orlando resort. Buy two days and get three days free at the parks. Restrictions apply. Just last week, the president of the United States stood before the American People and refused to condemn White Supremacists and hate groups, like these two michigan militia groups. Stand back and stand by he told them. Stand back and stand by. The fbi announcing it foiled a plot to kidnap michigan governor gretchen whitmer. 13 white men were charged in connection with the plot. All of them belong to rightwing militia groups. Lets be clear. That means they are homegrown terrorists. A growing reality in this country that this administration has largely refused to accept and address. And then there is the whitmer trump factor. The president has unleashed numerous attacks on the governor since the pandemic hit, and that didnt change when he responded to news of this foiled plot. A spokesperson for attorney general bill barr, however, says the ag finds the allegations abhorrent. Lets bring in nbcs brandy zedrosni, and author of the book how to catch a russian spy. Brandy, weve heard that these guys were part of something called the wolverine watchmen. Thats part of the Boogaloo Movement. Who are they . What do they believe in this . Well, the Boogaloo Movement is an armed antigovernment white extremist movement. Mostly it targets liberal political opponents and Law Enforcement. Their goal is really to start a civil war in the u. S. They call it the boogaloo, and thats a joking reference to a 1980s break dancing movie. Its sort of silly. Its a lot online. But what it is also incredibly violent. Just this year a california man was accused of killing a Police Officer and a federal agent. Other members of the boogaloo were arrested and accused of trying to partner with hamas. There are two or three men who are arrested in las vegas on terrorist charges at a black lives matter protest. This is a dangerous homegrown terrorist organization. And you can tell Law Enforcement is really, really watching for it now. And theyre monitoring it on facebook where a lot of these groups and people sort of congregate and organize. Facebook took those groups down in june, and now were seeing sort of the fallout of Law Enforcements tracking of them. What does it tell you that they focus their ire on the governor of michigan . Well, first, let me congratulate the Trump Campaign in their coveted endorsement by the taliban. Look, i think its an important thing to look at this and say that we had armed men storming the capitaol. I just got off the phone with a police chief and the frustration local Law Enforcement feels when they still protect the right to bear arms. They want to also protect the first amendment. But the fact that people are showing up to protests armed, they view as an escalation, as an attempt to intimidate, to terrorize. And for a host of reasons, the Boogaloo Boys and other groups have focused on this governor. And the fact that we cant have a president that can come out and completely condemn this and specifically condemn it i think is, frankly, very clearly being heard by these groups as nothing short but a call to arms. And as someone who grew up in the post9 11 world and served in the military, its frustrating for me to see that i know that if this was indeed an isis group or someone for isis or al qaeda, right now there would be a drone strike going against a Training Camp somewhere. Obviously, we cant do that here. But we can use Law Enforcement and the frustration they have, and we dont have bill barr, let alone the president speaking out directly and strongly against these groups and condemning them and priority tying them just means that once again, just like with covid, Law Enforcement is sort of left to its own devices in an unequal way in dealing with this. Let me just drill down there. Why hasnt the u. S. Government labeled the Boogaloo Movement domestic terrorism . There is an important point to make about domestic terrorism. It doesnt really hold much legal water. The difference is when we say someone is supporting isis or al qaeda, there is an international nexus. There is something that is going beyond the borders of the United States. Domestic terrorism, this starts going into freedom of assembly, freedom of speech. And there is very difficult thing someone is a group, a terrorist organization. And by default, we can say charge you for providing Material Support to that group. It starts moving in look, one day its the boogaloo groups. The next day its is naacp. There are a lot of legal reasons that cant happen. There is things that Law Enforcement both federal and local can do. And the number one thing they can do is prioritizing this. This is not something new. This is something that slowly, as brandy discussed, the courthouse in oakland. The assassination of a federal court officer. This is something that has been going on for quite some time. And i think frankly Law Enforcement is behind the 8 ball. And why is that . Why has this not been prioritized. Why isnt Law Enforcement up against this stronger, faster, and sooner . Brandy, so much of your reporting has focused on social media and the way social media is used as a tool to recruit, to convene groups like this. Earlier this summer, the Boogaloo Movement was actually banned from facebook. So how have they been able to continue to come together if theyre not doing it on facebooks platform . Well, they are still doing it on facebooks platform. And the problem is that a lot of these groups are sort of the internet. And so its a cat and mouse game in terms of enforcing their guidelines. Right now boogaloo will change tactics. Theyll call themselves the big luau or use other terms and start new groups. Now theyre moving to sort of smaller alternative far right platforms. So its really just a constant game of cat and mouse. And the platforms have to be really vigilant if they want to keep these groups off their platform. Facebook is honestly doing a pretty good job now. They kicked this group, the wolverine waupmen off in june. Theyre trying, but its really hard. Naveed, earlier this week, the dhs put out a longawaited report on misinformation and threats and concluded that White Supremacy was the most persistent and lethal threat in the homeland. Lets be clear. It doesnt go away if donald trump win reelection, right . This is now a threat that has to be contended with, regardless of who is in the white house in january. So if joe biden wins, what is he dealing with in january . And how do you actually contend with this moving forward . Well, look. Weve seen the rise of this since trump came into office. The altright was something what came in with trump. And its morphed from that. We have to be very careful when as brandy is pointing out. Facebook might ban one group. Its same thing with federal authorities. We have somebody in michigan but also someone from delaware. There is a federal nexus there. When and if joe biden does take this, even if trump wins, this movement does not go away. Its been clearly radicalized. And more importantly, its been energized. It feels the reason were hearing more about it is frankly, its just engaged in more activity. And look, they can just change their name. But at the end of the day, there is still one and the same. Unfortunately, alicia, this is something that is becoming more and more prevalent of a movement. And whether its White Supremacy or white nationalism, we have to be careful between getting like into the weeds about this stuff. This is really very much a movement that seeks to in some cases, frankly, overthrow the government. In this case, they wanted to try the governor of one of our states, put her on trial in this isislike method. And isis did this, would bring people outs Record Videos and behead them. This is what were dealing with. We cant be okay with this. And we shouldnt get stuck with labels, but clearly this is noting . That is going to go away after the election regardless of whom wins. Brandy and naveed, thank you both so much. Millions of lives will never be the same because of this pandemic. Youll meet three people who prove it, when american voices continues. Est 5g network. Well, the American People have witnessed what is the greatest failure of any president ial administration in the history of our country. Whatever the Vice President is claiming the administration has done clearly it hasnt worked. When youre looking at over 210,000 dead bodies in our country. American lives that have been lost, families that are grieving that loss. During the Vice President ial debate this week, senator Kamala Harris took on the Trump Administrations handling of the coronavirus pandemic. The president has cast doubt on the importance of wearing masks. He has thrown his top Health Advisers under the bus and politicized agency as once seen as sacred as the fda and the nih which combined made for a browraising moment at the debate when the Vice President accused senator harris of playing politics with peoples lives. Since contracting the very virus hes downplayed the president continues to minimize the risks. Today on the porch of the south lawn saying i feel great. What about you . While chances remain high that hes still shedding the virus. Its a message hes maintained since returning from his threeday stay at walter reed. I learned so much about coronavirus. And one thing thats for certain, dont let it dominate you. Dont be afraid of it. Youre going to beat it. We have the best medical equipment. We have the best medicines. All developed recently. I stood out front. I led. Nobody thats a leader would not do what i did. And i know there is a risk. There is a danger. But thats okay. And now im better, and maybe im immune. I dont know. But dont let it dominate your lives. The president says dont let the virus dominate you. When there are over 215,000 americans dead because of covid19 and nearly 8 million confirmed cases across the country. Among those who have contracted coronavirus is dr. Dara cass. She is an er doctor at Columbia University Medical Center who has thankfully recovered from the virus. Well also want you to meet fiana tulip who lost her mother to covid. Dr. Cass, youve had coronavirus. I imagine as a practitioner, that made you additionally empathetic to those who also have contracted this virus. By contrast, we saw the president today holding a public event at the white house. Hes still under that twoweek period for recovery. Whats the danger of the president of the United States saying dont let this dominate your life . This virus has come nated the lives of every single american who has been paying attention since march. For myself, even when i got the virus, i was working from home doing telemedicine. I moved my children out of my house to keep them safe from me, their mother who was infected with this virus. We have seen the president do every single thing wrong, from the position of somebody who is infectious and a threat to other people in addition to the fact from a Public Health perspective, his he has messaged only the wrong things to do since the day he was infected. Dr. Kass, let me just drill down a little bit more there. Not only is he now talking about not wearing maks or not social distancing, you also have this added element of touting therapies that are not available to a lot of americans. Still havent had some of the Clinical Trials necessary to be done on them. What is the danger of that messaging . So lets be honest. If somebody came to my hospital and said id like to check myself in for the coronavirus because im worried that i might get sick, right, over the course of the pandemic, that was unavailable to people that were documented to have this virus who were having difficulty breathing. All hospitals in the northeast even sent people home on oxygen because we had no room in our icus, on our floor beds. We were packed to the gills. We set up field hospitals. So the president touting his therapeutics and more importantly the availability of his treatment as somehow the Gold Standard is honestly a slap in the face to the nearly half a million americans who have gotten sick since the day we had the rose garden event. Fiana, i want you to tell me a little bit about your mom, about your moms battle with this virus, and what is it if you could, what would you like to say to the president of the United States . My mom was amazing, and she was a respiratory therapist, 64 years young, healthy. We had just given her first grandchild, and she was happier than ever. Ive never seen her so happy this past year. But she kept going in to work despite fear, despite the fear of knowing what this virus could do to her, despite the fear of transmitting the virus to my brother who she lived with, despite the fear of not having enough ppe in her hospital. While she was going into work and taking on extra shifts, she had a visitor at the hospital say after my mom asked her to put on a mask, she said if my president doesnt wear one, why should i . Many other people got sick, including my mom. Five days after my mom tested positive, she died. And she tried to treat herself at home because she knew the hospital was worse. So she knew how to shift her body from side to side, front to back. She knew how to help herself breathe, because thats what she did future a living. And she didnt want to go to the hospital because it was worse. Shet didnt want to call an ambulance because it would be too expensive. She couldnt find a testing site for two days because there was not an available appointment for her. She was someone who worked in the Health Care System on the front line, and she had to suffer at home. So i would want the president to know that, you know, so many people have died and its not only dominated their lives, its ended them. And they didnt have a choice. The Health Care Workers going into work every day, they do not have a choice. Its dominating their lives. And to generalize his treatment and his sickness is dangerous, and it will kill many more people. Dr. Parnell, this is also really personal for you. I would like for you to tell us your story. And i also want to hear your take on what seems to be a really unfair point here, which is you have the president pushing to have rallies while possibly still being capable of spreading covid when so many people were not allowed to be with their loved ones while they were dying. Talking about not allowed to be with your loved ones when theyre dying. Look, my father was a very heroic man. My father died in a hospital that was only four miles from the hospital that i was working in. So while the president of the United States was cavalier and paraded around in a car, i drove four miles across a city hopeful to see my father one last time. And as soon as i made it to the parking garage and turned off my ignition, i got the phone call that he died. To hear the president say dont let this dominate your life, its an insult, and its more than an insult. The president of the United States is a threat to Public Health. I want to be very clear on that. Were at a prescient time in our nations history. Weve had the new england journal of medicine come out and endorse and say do not vote for donald trump. That has never happened before. That is not a political move. That is a Public Health and that is a medical move and a medical recommendation. And furthermore, for the president to have an outdoor event outside of the white house where we dont know that Infection Prevention guidelines are being followed because of the number of those who have been exposed and who have tested positive and to invite black and latinos, groups who have been disproportionately devastated by this pandemic, one in one thousand blacks are dead because of coronavirus. That is more than just being tone deaf. That is dangerous. Dr. Parnell, you also wrote for nbc news about taking part in a covid19 vaccine Clinical Trial as way of honoring your dad, fighting racism, and exercising your power. How important was it for you to be a part of this trial . Supremely important. Look, my dad was a research scientist. My father would say to me, follow the science. Follow the data. In all of the concern and the alarm that im expressing and that my peers are on here expressing tonight is because we believe and the Public Health science and we believe in the Public Health data. I saw this as an opportunity to be a part of the solution, especially since my community and my own family has been so disproportionately impacted. Not only did i lose my father to coronavirus, but my sister, who is a Breast Cancer survivor is a struggling to recover. So this is my way of being about the solution. Fiana, you invited Governor Greg Abbott to your moms funeral. Youre also part of the group marked by covid. How do you hold leaders accountable when it comes to this virus, especially when you have the president of the United States saying the things he is saying . There are a number of ways. In fact, with our honest obituaries we help sponsor marked by covid we make sure we hold leadership accountable in those obituaries so they can see them. We will invite them to our funerals. My moms funeral, i veited Governor Abbott to my moms funeral so he could see firsthand what it was like for a family to mourn over the loss of a loved one, so he could see firsthand the pain that were going through. There is a lot of emotion missing from our leadership right now. Theyre not listening to us. Theyre not hearing us. We are trying out for help. So with marked by covid, we are making sure we are putting pressure on leadership so that they can institute a regulated and systematic approach followed by the recommendations of health experts, and thats by holding vigils. Thats by holding marches. Thats by sending letters, speaking out, and speaking up and talking with media. Its just important that they know that we are hurting and we are asking for help, and we need change now. Dr. Dara kass, dr. Chris pernell and piana tulip, thank you. This weeks vp debate was the only time in the 2020 president ial general election that well see a woman or a person of color make their case to the American People. Its only the third time this country has ever seen a woman up there, and the first time the country has ever seen a woman of color make that stage. And thats huge for a number of reasons, but first, lets talk about what was not new, the double standard that all women who strive to lead are up against. Senator Kamala Harris wasnt just debating mike pence, she was threading the narrowest of needles, proving that she has what it takes to lead without being dubbed unlikable. A nonsense, deeply subjective word that for Women Leaders basically means she was assertive and strong and all the things i look for in a man who wants to lead, but i find unsettling coming from a woman. And yet it matters because while voters will vote for a man they dont like, as long as they believe he is competent, women have to convince voters theyre both skilled and likable. Consider the number of times harris was interrupted by pence. If she had allowed him to do it, she would have ceded both time and given the impression that she couldnt hold her own. If she could be bulldozed by pence, how could she ever stand up to putin or kim jongun or maduro. She needed to flex, and yet she did it with the biggest smile you will ever seen. But behind the meme is a high level calculus that many women know for well. Be smart but warm, assertive, but not too ambitious. But the bias against women, especially against black women is so deep and so powerful that event harris performance didnt stop her detractors from relying on recycles material. Check out this roundup from the daily show. Well, not even the plexiglas could contain that strong side eye that Kamala Harris was giving the Vice President. And i think what people took away from it was a bit abrasive, a bit condescending. I dont think she did a good job of making herself likable. And the scowls and the funny faces were not that helpful. The facial expressions and the way she behaved were really offputting. She could do a little more than make these awkward smiles and shake her head. The only real mistake Kamala Harris made tonight was the oversmirking, oversmiling. That same kind of haughty, smug smirking framework that it is not a good look on men or women. Here is the thing. The fact that they went after her style instead of her substance, well, thats a tell. There is also something wednesday night gave us that no one can take away. Think about everyone in this country who saw Kamala Harris take that stage. Think about everyone for the first time watched someone like her, maybe someone like themselves, a woman, a person of color, a child of immigrants, audition to be the second in command to lead this nation. Win or lose, that already expands our definition of what a leader looks like and who is worthy of power. And i love seeing women that strong that are leading and really making a difference in our lives. I have a daughter. I want her to see that hey, women can make it happen. Thats a big plus for us. That make us feel like yes, we got somebody in there that is going to represent not even haitians, the jamaicans, all. Many immigrants or many haitians when they look at senator harris, they are looking at themselves. If she can make to it that level, there is a chance that we can make it as well. In a major blow to the Trump Campaign a pennsylvania federal judge has dismissed the campaigns lawsuit seeking to block the use of drop boxes for mail ballots in the state. The judge ruled the president s claims of potential voter fraud were speculative and lack actual evidence. This comes amid another legal battle over mailin ballots in the key swing state of texas. This afternoon Texas Attorney general ken paxton filed an appeal that blocked Governor Greg Abbott from limiting the number of dropoff sites to just one for county. Amber mcreynolds, coauthor of when women vote election reform as a road map to advance equality. Colorado has had universal mailin voting for about seven years. Amber, both of those lawsuits cited Election Security as their reasoning for limiting dropoff locations. Dispel for us, if you will, the myths and misinformation surrounding mailin voting. Well, the misinformation around mailin voting has hit an alltime level this year. I mean, the number of, you know, information should be accurate about the process, a process, by the way, that has existed in all 50 states for a long period of time. Its unfortunate not only for the Election Officials that actually run this process, but for voters. Its created confusion. Its also created mistrust of a process that works really well for voters across the country and we know by evidence has a very small amount of issues or technical issues or even fraud as whats been discussed. Thats the unfortunate part about this. It just continues to confuse and will you tell me hurt voters in the process. Some of this is happening at the state level. Some of it is happening nationally. We had a department of justice lawyer announce that prosecutors are going to be allowed to investigate suspicions of voter fraud before votes are tabulated. How could that undermine confidence, americans confidence in mailin voting . Look, i mean, we need to make sure our election system is safe and secure. Theres a lot of different ways to do that. With the votebymail process thats been in place in many states in an extensive way for a long period of time, there are systems where you can deter and desk. Thats important not only for vote by mail, but also inperson voting and, frankly, anyone who tries to interfere, we need to deter and detect and hold the bad actors accountable if they try to do that. That extends to mis and disinformation. Amber, when it goes right, and you know what it looks like for it to go right, how is ballot tracking and signature matching conducted correctly . So both of those two elements have been in colorado for a long period of time, as well as oregon and washington and now hawaii and california, arizona. A lot of states that have done this for a long period of time. Whats really important is that first and foremost signature verification be free from implicit bias. What i mean is you want to compare and make sure youre confirming the eligibility of the voter as well as ensuring security, but you also dont want to reject ballots that are valid votes and should be counted. Its important to develop consistent procedures in every state, utilizing Technology Like Verification Software which exists in a lot of states now that are using it because that ultimately is a onetoone match on the signature. Finally, having a good and effective process so if the signature gets flagged, voters have the ability to cure quickly, easily, and in an accessible way and also in a timely way. And then ballot tracking is one of our top recommendations from the National Vote athome institute, a technology pioneered in denver ten years ago, and it allows voters to track their ballot through the entire process. That helps enhance security in the votebymail process. This year alone weve seen nevada, georgia, california, North Carolina all expand ballot tracking options. Amber mcrecommends, thank you so much for spending time with us. If you need some voting inspiration, you need look no further than bee lump kin in illinois. At 102, ms. Bee witnessed everything. Shes a retired school teacher, despite the risk covid poses to her health, she was hell bent on getting her ballot in the mail. With the help of her grandson, she suited up with a hood, fan, gloves, just so she could get to the mailbox to vote in what she calls the most important election of her life. Ms. Bee tells the Washington Post she already has confirmation that her ballot was received. There are just 24 days to the election, so this is to be your reminder to be like bee.
