Trump will stay in trial, accusing of beating may 20th 2024. Without any political context, he will be in court and not on the Campaign Trail for at least two weeks between Super Tuesday and the Republican National convention. That break would be bad news for any candidate, but its especially unfortunate for trump, who is trying to outrun or at least run alongside multiple doj investigations. The Justice Department confirming earlier this week that trump is a target of its Election Interference Case, prosecutors cited several possible statues, including conspiracy to defraud the United States. Trump waits for that next indictment, the Washington Post reports he is quote, making the centerpiece of his candidacy an appeal to stay out of prison. Not only does trump want president ial immunity, hes also relying on Campaign Donations to pay his growing legal fees. And for now, the Republican Party is rallying behind him, even his rivals from the white house refused to hold Trump Accountable for january 6th. Former Vice President mike pence, as usual, downplaying a mob that was chanting to hang him. I had no right to overturn the election. President trump was wrong, he was wrong still. And his reckless words on that day endangered my family and all of us. Glenn im not convinced it was criminal. And i hope that with the possibility of another indictment coming against the president , i hope it doesnt come to that. The bought doing a lot of work in that sentence. Joining me now, former republican congressman david jolly of florida, he is an as nbc political analyst. Also with me, former u. S. Attorney harry litman, he is a Legal Affairs columnist for the l. A. Times and host of a podcast. And luke broadwater, congressional reporter for the new york times. It is good to see you all. Harry, we have a date to circle on the calendar, at least for now, may 20th 20 2024, for the start of the special counsels documents case. What do you make of the date judge cannon picked this week . Alicia, we need a date, but with an eraser on it and a white board. Because thats im not surprised she said it then, but we know its just an overture for trump to start pushing, because thats in particular when theyll really be at the end of that period, all kinds of litigation over the calls sulfide procedures, part of the case. The classified documents. And thats the one thing thats challenging and could take up time. So really, hes starting almost a year out of the box, and hes got six months to go. Im sure thats how hes looking at it, and hell have some cards to play, especially with the classified documents. What do you mean by cards to play . The classified documents, hes got a lot of things that. Bring most of them are really meritless. But when it comes to classified documents, theres a prescribed set of procedures that we have to do with can the jury see them, how much can the defense actually sanitize them, because these are, after all, classified documents. Thats a Big Push And Pull and tug of war, even with good and for any case, and thats where he has his best shot at really imposing additional delays, and getting for him passed the finish line of november 2024. David jolly, understanding the huge asterisk that harry has just placed on that date, if you look at it and just sort of imagine the possibility of its proximity to Super Tuesday, to the convention, i think the fuller picture of just how challenging this is going to be, not just for donald trump himself, but for a republican field that has not wanted to go head first, attack him head on, with the exception of Chris Christie into a secondary degree hutchinson, you heard pence there saying what happened on january 6th, it wasnt good, it wasnt right. But saying i am not sure it was a criminal. Talk to me about the challenges of all of this for trump himself politically, and for the republican field. Yeah, alicia, i would say for the challenge for the country as well, who was possibly going to be facing an unimaginable choice next november, and finding ourselves in an unimaginable historic moment. But for donald trump himself, he got exactly what he wanted. What we do know is that indictments dont hurt him, they help him. So if youre up by 30 points, what you dont want to introduce is the unknown of a trial before the republican primary is over. It will be over by may. At this point it looks like donald trump will secure the nomination sometime in march, and then to harrys point, that actually introduces some new novel legal questions as well that i think play perfectly legally to donald trump. Would he have reason to raise a question of delano as a Major Party Nominee on a ballot against an incumbent president . Perhaps. We just dont know. So then what does it mean for the rest of the republican field . They still have not figured out how their words can define donald trump. At this point, the rest of the republican field is just worried about how theyre defining themselves. Am i being too critical . And might not be increment cool enough . How do i kind of ancient to this moment . Mike pence is a perfect example. Donald trump should not have did it, he put my family at risk, but i hope he doesnt get in trouble for it, even though we saw the Guy Rappelling down from the balcony and we know that a protester got shot outside of the house. The security of the nation in the capital was at risk that day. I think that mike pence whatever it is is the nonsense well continue to see from republican candidates. I appreciate that. You remind me the greatest states are for the country. Listen, its not just 2024 contenders that have this on their mind. Theres a push by republicans in the house to expunge trumps impeachment. Youve got Speaker Mccarthy saying he supports it, denying he made any deal about it with trump, what is your reporting telling you . Yeah. He does support it, he doesnt deny that there was some sort of secret deal, but we do know that they talked about it and he told trump that he would talk to the republican conference about it. And we do know that at Least Stefanik has introduced the expungement, shes the number three republican along with Marjorie Taylor greene, whos maybe the most famous republican in congress at the moment. So it does have momentum, it probably could pass, sometime in the fall perhaps, but again, it doesnt really do anything. Right. So whats the point, luke . Its totally a symbolism thing. Its to tell trump were with you 100 , those bad democrats of the past, they were erasing them from history, but of course you cant actually erase what happened in congress. Everybody saw the impeachments, we know what happened. So its not like a criminal record that you can sort of you can pan the box or something. Its just totally a different scenario. This will be a purely symbolic act. Harry, trumps former lawyer claims another federal indictment is still far off. I want you to take a listen. I know that there are several key witnesses and that they have not yet interview. And so it does give everybody the impression that were talking about an indictment within a week, whereas my personal observation, i think its at least a month away. At least a month away. Harry, what do you think about the timeline . He is whistling in the graveyard. The interview agents, the interviews that they want to do, do not require a grand jury sitting for the most part what you want to do now is the people you need in the grand jury, like will russell, who testified for the first time. You want to lock him in. Everybody else, bernard, they can talk to after. And they can do a trial subpoena. Now, its true, we dont know who else he may want to try to stitch up. Weve heard so far about trump, but to me its customary, not necessary, but customary that the indictment follows a quick order off the Target Letter. And smith i think is all about speed now. So its plausible, hes got a severalweek game plan, but to me its equally if not more plausible he is ready to pull the trigger with one exception, and that is trump gets an opportunity if he requests it to make a final appeal, which will not succeed to the higher ups, but not Merrick Garland higher ups. In the doj and smiths operation. Luke, part of the reason i made you spend part of your saturday with me is because i have to burning questions about congress as it relates to the dojs Target Letter to trump. One is, do you have a sense, as you talked to republicans on the hill, that they are more spooked than they are letting on, by the possibility of a second federal indictment . And given that with the statutes recommended by the january Six Committee, any sense of vindication among former members of the committee . I talked to several members of the committee right after the news came out about what charges were in the Target Letter. And, there stance pretty much is we laid out this case, and weve been hoping the Justice Department would pick it up and run with it. And all the time theyve been agitating for it to be quicker and happen faster, and so they were glad to see that things were moving along, and that their evidence was being put to use and was being built upon. Jack smith certainly has advanced well beyond where the january Six Committee was. He has been able to pierce privileges that were invoked by key witnesses to the january Six Committee, hes been able to interview at least a dozen people that they never got a chance to talk to, highranking people close to trump. So hes gone beyond what they put forward, and in fact, i think you see that with the deprivation of rights under the color of law account, because that was not one of the considerations of the january Six Committee put forward. So, they think that things are moving along and theyre glad to say that the Justice Department has surpassed them. Harry and luke, as always, thank you so much for getting us started. David, you are staying with me next. Vice president harris goes to florida to remind people that slavery was incredibly that. Sadly, there is a need to do that these days. Confirming today that Vice President Kamala Harris personally make the decision to travel to florida yesterday. The lastminute trip to respond to the Florida Board Of Education approved new standards for teaching black history. Take a listen to what she had to say. Just yesterday, the state of florida, they decided mental School Students will be told that enslaved people benefit from slavery. They insult us in an attempt to gaslight us and we will not stand for it. Florida governor and president ial candidate ron desantis colin her address absolutely ridiculous and totally adjust. If you ask me, that is more about him than her. Back now our panel, joining the conversation lets talk about the stakes of what is happening in florida. So critical that the Vice President of the United States felt it was personally important for her to travel to the Sunshine State to go on record from the state outlining for people why this is just so dangerous. What do you see as the consequences of what we are watching in florida . The consequences are dire. We are talking about my ancestors here. This is a bit personal to me. The idea that anyone in their right mind would try to make it seem as though slavery was somehow good for the slaves, people who were treated like animals, people who were treated like they were in human. They were not human beings. And somehow we are going to try to change a curriculum to make it seem as though there was some good in . That it was no benefit to being raped. It was no benefit to being, you know, like of bodily autonomy. There is no benefit to that. Teaching is that white does a disservice to the children in the state of florida. It does a disservice to our country. I dont as disservice to our accurate account of history, period. I cannot of course top that. Congressman jolly, it strikes me that you have republicans trying to point to florida as a Bastion Of Freedom, well put that in big quotation marks, while also trying to limit the very basics of what this country was founded on. Yeah, Bastion Of Freedom for which white men, basically, what florida is becoming under the ideology of runs and his party. I think the representative put a perfectly. Rhonda sent us, his entire ethos and brand has been defined by stepping on the futures and full full fortunes of the black and Brown Community and marginalized and lgbt community. That is the brand, that is why he has suffering now nationally. Because he is seeing only for that ethos. There is no traditional republicans republicanism in him. Certainly, you can look at the history of the party to find their themes of racism, xenophobia, and discrimination of marginalized communities. But Ron Desantiss book has been the now nationally and it is an anchor around his neck in national politics. Obviously, what is most important here, representative, is for these larger questions about democracy, but education, about what it is that we are teaching the future generation of leaders. We are also in this very tenuous political moments where so much is at stake, predicated on positions that will be made in the next year and a half. A decision on the part of the Vice President to come to florida, what does that signal to you . I think it signals that this is an important issue. Not only that, i think it signals that this is an issue that will probably make its way into the 2024 elections. Lets be clear, right now what we are seeing and florida and honestly across the country is a lot of Culture War Type issues being brought up. And so we are seeing people a tech education, the types of books that are available for students, were seeing all of these Different Things and so, when we decide how 2024 is going to look, i think we have to acknowledge that extremism is going to be a part of that picture. Because lets be clear, teaching that somehow slavery had some good parts, thats extreme. And i have talked to people from across the aisle and pretty much everyone agrees. We do not need to sugarcoat. We do not need to candy coat at all. When it comes to talking about slavery in our country. It is an ugly part of a history, but it is a part of a history that we need to acknowledge, but we need to acknowledge it in truth. We need to acknowledge it in a way that does not minimize the atrocities of slavery. And so when you try to undermine that, when you try to minimize that, that is an extreme position. And so as we prepare for the 2024 elections, well probably see a lot more of this. Probably a lot and the primaries. Although, i do not think this will resonate well at all during the general election. People like the people in my community and suburban america, were not here for that. The fact that you have to clarify that at all, representative clark, continues to buckle my mind. David jolly, representative justin clark, thank you both so much for your time. Next, more than a dozen women suing texas over the states to restrict Abortion Laws. They have heartbreaking stories about being denied health care when they needed it most. Gut wrenching testimony in a texas courtroom this week from one of the womens win over the states abortion ban. Described in excruciating detail, the worst moments of their lives. Being forced to carry pregnancies to term, despite knowing their faces had no chance of survival. One of the woman so upset recounted her experience, she threw up and east. And these stories are simply not outliers, they reflect women in the country are going through because of severe abortions and bans put in place after the Supreme Court struck down roe v. Wade. Joining me now, molly a senior staff attorney at the center for report of rights and lead attorney and the texas case. Also with us, taylor edwards, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit. Thank you both so much for your time today. Taylor, i want to talk with you. Watching these hearings, it is really obvious how difficult it is for all of you to share your stories. Why was it important to you to be part of this lawsuit . It was important to me because, yes, it is difficult to hear these stories and to relive the worst days of our lives over and over again. But it is important because, unfortunately, our situations are not unique. They are not rare. Pregnancy complications happen. Pregnancy is not a health neutral condition. Things can go wrong. And things went wrong with my very wonky pregnancy. And people need to know that these horrifying nightmarish experiences happen and they are real and they are not something that is just hypothetical. They are real, and date. Molly, the texas law includes an exception to save the life of a mother. I want you to explain for me, for our audience, why in the real world, when you apply, this that had no meaning for your clients. There are a couple of problems with this law. First of all, it bans all abortions. , writes thats not the problem. Given the bare minimum that were asking for here, which is the patients with serious potential complications be allowed to access abortion. We are asking for that because its not happening under the exception. Those Who Support Abortion bans often televised exceptions as, dont worry. The patients that relate need abortions are getting them. But thats simply not true. Right . The problem is that you pair an extreme abortion ban, or talking about 99 years in prison, loss of less unsure, hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines, and then you use fake language that has no meaning and the medical profession. Of course physicians are scared and dont know what abortions they can provide and which they cant. So our lawsuit asks for thats their minimum. I think what i really was shocked to see, last week, it was confronted by the states approach in this case. They didnt want our plaintiffs to testify at all. I think its obvious why. But then they objected to the testimony, as a relevance to the lawsuit. And then they just went as hard as they possibly could, right . When the states expert was testifying that woman elected her should be forced to carry a pregnancy to term, i couldnt help but keep turning around to check on taylor, on samantha, on our other clients. Because i think any family who struggled with fertility would be offended, if not traumatized by what the state was arguing. Taylor, i wonder how it felt to hear that sit as you had taken it upon yourself to share what is already a difficult experience. Yeah, as molly said, it was just horrifying to hear, especially following samanthas testimony, the previous day, where she was forced to carry a fetus with a fatal diagnosis similar to mine, my daughters diagnosis. I mean, that is the compassionate option for them, is terrifying a little bit. It really felt like the state does not care about us or other pregnant people in texas who are faced with, or could be faced with, these situations. Molly, talk me through legally what the end goal is here. What do you think it cant be done in the courts . Well, you know, we at the Center For Reproductive Rights have litigated reproductive rights cases, Abortion Rights for decades. Just because roe v. Wade is no longer the law of the land doesnt mean that we stop. Far from it. The next day, after it was overturned, we came back to work. So this lawsuit, in some sense, is very small. Because what we are asking for in this lawsuit is, as i said, the bare minimum. Patients with serious Pregnancy Complications should still be getting Abortion Access in their own communities. Under the medical exception. But because that exception doesnt win a court to clarify what it actually means so that patients like taylor can receive that care. From there, i just have to say, writes, this is going to be a long battle. But the other thing that is really important about this case is that it involves the voices of real pregnant people. Real woman saying this is what happened to me and this is why and my situation abortion is health care. And at the Center For Reproductive Rights, we believe litigation like this will truly help people understand and feel compassion towards everyone who seeks abortion. And really realize that, you know, the public should be able to decide what they want to do. We should each be able to raise our families and the way that we see fit, and the government has no role in telling us when we should be pregnant, when we shouldnt, and how we should grieve. Taylor, as one of those real woman, as one of those real voices, im sure you understand as a duality to your audience here. There is both the people in the courtroom and there is the reason we invite you here of night. There are americans all across the country who wants to hear your story and want to understand things as you see it. What is it that you want them to take away from this . What is it you want them to understand . I think what i want them to take away from this is that you have no clue what you would do until youre actually faced with this scenario. Especially speaking from my situation, i mean, i went into the Anatomy Scan Thinking we were just going to see our baby and have a great day. I had no idea that families are given the worst news of their lives on that day, as i was. And once youre in that situation, having your Options Limited or completely taken away from you is it compounds the trauma youre already going through. We are really not asking for Something Different to be invented for us, or some new procedure, or anything else. We are just asking for something thats recognized health care and most of the civilized world. Because we were pregnant, we couldnt be given that care. That is basically it. If you cannot receive the Gold Standard of care molly and taylor, thank you both so much. Next, you know about the rioters and the actors. That could be the tip of the iceberg for americas hot truck summer. We are talking about the other workers that could get walking off the job. What is happening and what does it say about the state of labor in this country . Weve been having a National Conversation about inequality in this country since the economic crisis of 2008, 2009. The fundamentals have not changed. Economic insecurity is continuing to rise and economic dignity is not. We have pervasive economic insecurity in our economy and an epidemic of low wage work. We have millions of people who work incredibly hard every single day. To everything in the power and still cant pay the bills. Still cant take care of their families. And what we are seeing is workers coming together, with their unions, and saying enough is enough. We deserve fairness. We deserve respect. And we deserve fear compensation. Compensation. And the other piece is working conditions. One of the things i think youve seen because of social media is you are getting a look behind the curtain at some of these industries. What some of these workers are up against on a daytoday basis. Thats right. And every industry, woodrow seeing is increased levels of insecurity. And chris levels of lack of access to benefits. Let covax is to health care, lack of access to a sense of what my Economic Future is going to be. And it really doesnt make sense in an economy or so much wealth is being generated every single day. The fact that we still have not raised the minimum wage in this country is just an indication of how difficult it has been for working people in america. And that has to change. I think we are seeing workers courageously coming together and supporting each other across sectors. Yorktown to continue to see that. I have list of criminal left, but what we keep hearing from union members, strikes are supposed to be disruptive. Talk about the impact across the country and what it is a critical part of the fight. We always say that Domestic Work is the work that makes a whole other work possible. All of these workers who are coming forward are demonstrating, our Dramatizing Effect that their work makes the American Economy possible. And they deserve fairness and respect and dignity. That is what this is about at a fundamental level. Aijen poo, as always, thanks so much for your expertise and your time. Now to hollywood which just narrowly avoided a strike. How do we tell the story of an infamous dictator . Once a war hero who became the leader of the philippines. He violated human rights. His wife was a beauty queen with an extensive Profession Collection who will get significant political power. Their story is coming to provide an a disco style musical. I sat down with three of the show just hours and one of the Shows Producers to talk about the show and their experiences as Filipino Americans. S. I remember being 12 years old and seeing magazine covers all of when, passed away. His face was everywhere. His body on the tarmac of the international airport, so those things are burned into my memory. And then seeing footage of the funeral processions. I was seeing that on television in realtime. Rather than reading about that in history books. There are different perspectives. Leah gets her perspective from living there while it was happening. My family immigrated here in 79. We were part of a very active Filipino American community. We watched it from here on the television screen. His assassination has been burned into my brain since i was ten years old. It has been interesting, as filipino as we can compare our Family History and our stories from different angles about the same events. There are critics who say that in choosing to focus on mlb markovs you are humanizing and centering the story of a vicious dictator. What do you . Say what i say to that is i think what we are doing is telling a crucial part of the filipino history which accounts of the telewithout americas involvement and. It to me, were not telling a story about the marcos, or to a story about what happened in this moment and a people power revolution. Peaceful revolution, people that took down that dictatorship. What does that mean in this moment, right . Not only in this country but around the world where a fascism is on the rise. Were seeing that happen globally. It is even more relevant now than when this show debuted at the public about ten years ago. That is what is difficult. The danger of not telling the story is to kind of put it away and that is the danger when you talk about the difficult part of history. That is when that began to repeat himself. The show is a great gateway to competitions, a great way to research. A great jumping off board for people to finally say this is what happened. My biggest hope is people go home from our shows conversations and start the conversations that were difficult to begin with. Even the non filipinos. And i think, we have seen weve been running for a couple of weeks, people will say i didnt know any of this. And im going to go home and google smore and try to figure out it is fascinating, and i felt like without a job when people say im going to go home and learn some more about my personal history, because youve spent an hour and a half telling us about yours. Much has been made that this is an old filipino cast. That is valuable and interesting. Whats more interesting to me is that filipinas or the fourth Coach Diaspora and this country and they have not historically been stories that center of the filipino experience. What does it mean to you to be the center of a story that is centering the filipino experience . It still gives me chills to think about the role that i get to have, to lead this company. And to be able to be playing a Filipino Character for the first time in my career. Ive played literally Everything Else under the sun. And ive never thought id be able to play a filipino until now. So being able to actually connect to that filipino history, for me personally, is lifechanging. I feel like filipinos, a lot of filipinos in the diaspora do feel like that and do felt like a hidden minority. I think because a lot of us dont, we dont know what ethnicity, other people dont know what ethnicity we are. Thats what were known for. Worth a country that got colonized a dozen times. We become the Kings And Queens of assimilation. Who was it that told us little brown americans . Rod yard kipling when he wrote the poem the white mans burden. He deplored the United States to take the philippines as the first class exercise an empire. I have to point out. We were uncivilized people, half devil and half child. Thats the quote. I have to say, listening to us talk about this, i think of this show as you cant tell the history of america without filipinos, right . For me, i cant i see the show as a real reclamation of our place in this country. It is not a surprise we are telling the story of broadway. I think anyone who knows a filipino knows that we throw the biggest parties. Never ending never ending food for everybody so the fact that we are throwing the Biggest Party on broadway, everybody is invited. Whenever i get out of the subway and woke to that theater and look at that sign, anyone whos filipino knows, oh my god, white, is that what are they doing . I still get chills. And i tell myself, we are mainstream. We have always been mainstream, filipinos. So it is interesting, because when clint ramos and i came on board, we sit, how do we get law, how do we get gabby, how do we get how do we get all of the filipinos. Some people understand this is absolutely that, but everybody is invited, right . Were not invisible anymore. And were not invisible. Because we never were. You just werent looking for us. Thanks to all of him. You can catch here lies love now open on broadway. Next, the light of humanity on full display at the nations capital.
