At least 36 lawsuits in six swing states. So far no court has found a single instance of voter fraud. Its hiding under trumps healthcare plan. Thats not stopping trump. In georgia after a hand recount affirmed joe bidens victory again, the Trump Legal Team demanded a second recount that will also not change the results. In michigan, trump invited the states Republican Leaders to the white house seeking their help. But even they say theyve seen nothing that would change the outcome of the election. And late on saturday, a federal judge in pennsylvania dismissed trumps legal fight there in a scathing opinion that reads, quote, this court has been presented with strained legal arguments without merit and speculative accusations. Unpled in the operative complaint and unsupported by evidence. In the United States of america, this cannot justify the disenfranchisement of a single voter let alone all the voters in its sixth most populated state. Wow, play that with the ether by in the back of your head. In response, pennsylvanias republican senator pat toomey joined a small group of republicans, small they can fit in Donald Trumps small hands, who actually acknowledged the president elect joe biden is the president elect. Meanwhile, after a leisurely day of golfing, donald trump took to twitter to air his grievances for fest fus giuliani vowed to continue this doomed fight in court. Joining me now, are elle, justice correspondent for the nation, curt, former Senior Adviser for the lincoln project, david jolly and alexi, axes yio reporter. Elle, look, im not a lawyer and i dont play one on tv, but that seemed like an epic smackdown with prejudice. Is there any room legally for trump to do anything else when judges are basically dropping disk tracks on these guys when they say theyre throwing out these cases . I used to tell my boss, hey, i can get sued by anybody. My job is to make sure they dont win. Thats what were at with giuliani. They can sue as much as they want. Theyre just not going to win. People need to understand, you know nobody who is as bad at their job as Rudolph Giuliani sat being a lawyer. He is terrible. Okay . So, what we need to do at this point, and i praise congressman, new jersey congressman bill parscal jr. Brought bar complaints against Rudy Giuliani in the five districts hes admitted. Thats what needs to happen now. These are frivolous lawsuits. Its rule 11 there to sanction lawyers who do this kind of bad things. All right . These people are unethical. They are bringing frivolous lawsuits and they should be punished and sanctioned by the courts. And if we had a strong country, that is what would be happening right now. Speaking of a strong country, we appear to have one party that won an election and another party thats still playing in an alternate universe. David jolly, what do you think of the fact that pat toomey admitted the obvious and were still dealing with this miniature group of republicans that admitted to the audience. Why do you think theyre lying to themselves when donald trump will be out of power in only 50 something days . Yeah, jason, i love that question. Look, you have a group of republicans who four years into this still havent figured out how to navigate trumpism and trumps voters. But i want to lean in on something elie just said because this reflects the behavior of republicans now at large. There are within the Legal Community a code of professional conduct. And giuliani is an attorney. We think of lawyers arguing before a judge as though theyre just arguing. Theyre considered officers of the court. Theyre not allowed to perpetrate a fraud or dishonesty on the court. Thats exactly whats happening. The judge actually said one of these arguments is like the frankensteins monsters, his words, the judges words, because its been so haphazardly stitched together. Thats what republicans are defending in this moment with their silence. And my concern, you know, i continue to say, jason, is this the constitution has a way to deal with all of this, right . Donald trump when he tried the hunter biden issue ended up getting impeached. The constitution provided for that. The courts have a remedy for all of these frivolous accusations. The inauguration will confirm joe biden as our president. Well a peaceful transfer. But what the constitution cannot protect against is the deceit of a man using the bully pulpit to defraud about a third of the country to believe none of this legitimate. In that the republican silence is damning because it is the republican class of elected officials right now that will ensure that after january 20th a large percent of our country doesnt believe in the legit masy of our elections. The constitution cant protect against that. We expect our leaders to protect against that. Republican silence unfortunately is going to tear at that fabric which will be very hard to recover from. Yeah. David, you know, the constitution doesnt have just a liars clause, if it did, it might save auz lot of trouble in our current environment. Alexi, i want to bring this to you. So recently were talking about the fact that a lot of republicans dont acknowledge the truth, but we have the secretary of state in georgia now saying, hey, look, i like trump. But the guy lost. From your sources talking to the campaign, talking to some of the legal team thats still left, when you have republicans who are coming out and saying, look, ive looked at all the numbers, this is over. Does the team trump, do they still believe they can get anywhere with this . Are they wasting money collecting cash at this point . Look, jason, thank you for having me and happy sunday to all of you guys. I mean, there are a very clear, small group of believers in the president right now, Rudy Giuliani, included who get up there and really fight for him in ways that they believe publicly and privately but a Trump Campaign adviser told axios on friday that this entire situation is a joke and referred to it as something i cant say on tv which is an s show. Really just reflecting the fact that folks inside know that this is going nowhere. The facts are not on President Trumps side. What is really fascinating, jason, is that all of these frantic, fraught legal strategies they are pursuing are having the exact opposite effect that President Trump is intending. It is dispelling this cloud of corruption that President Trump has claimed exists over the entire election and its process by forcing states to provide a verified and legally binding account of president elect joe bidens win. And that is the opposite effect that President Trump wants and hes continuing to follow these baseless claims and alternative facts which are just showing how much he has lost by and really cementing his legacy in someone who is kicking and screaming on his way out because he cant accept the outcome of the election. Every single court ruling is another brick in the wall thats going to lock donald trump out of the white house. Kirk, you wrote an interesting piece this week in nbc thank you talk about the fact when biden comes in theres things they have to evaluate and look at. When i look at the pe napoli of lawsuits that happened across the country, the first thing that occurs to me is maybe there needs to be legislation, maybe there needs to be suggestions of federal legislation in place so that we dont have to worry about all of these individual court cases. What do you think the Biden Administration should be thinking about at the electoral level to prevent Something Like this from happening again . You know, jason, i think what weve seen in these four years are the real cracks and the dents in our checks and balances system. And how when you have the unthinkable in power, theyre able to exploit those cracks and wreak havoc on democracy. Were seeing right now in this process the gsa administrator leaning on not definitive language to justify not acknowledging president joe bidens win to freeze out funds and not do things that government transition needs to have happen, these are things we can codify and put definitive language in Going Forward that gives a specific process for how the transition should work for when the transition should be designated by the gsa administrator. When you look at all the things that have happened, inspector generals getting fired, u. S. Attorneys losing their job for doing their job, whether the watchdogs being frozen out of government, having no congressional oversight or no mechanism in realtime challenge those things when the executive branch goes against congress, we need to have all of those things put back in place. President elect biden needs to assume that Going Forward we may find ourselves in another moment in time where we have someone who doesnt care about democracy and our institutions in that office and what safeguards we can put in place to ensure that our democracy can survive. Im telling you, if we go through this one more time, if we have another four year period at some point in the future thats like this, i dont think we can come out on the other side of that. Elie, im going to wave a magic wand and you have become attorney general. You are the great legal power of the new Biden Administration. What would you be doing legally at a federal level or a state level if you can influence it to keep us from trying to keep us from having to go through this kind of brinkmanship again in another election in two years or four years . Well, first of all, i would apply all the ethical rules. Kurt brought up this gsa admin tray store, emmy murray. She should be sued for dereliction of her duty. I would bring that as bidens attorney general. I would sue people for ethics violations. The Trump Administration has been so ethically questionable that we kind of just let it roll over ourselves. Right . Its an ethical violation, not a statutory. Look, ethics violations are there. We have rules and those are supposed to be the guardrails. And when we have gotten so lax in this country about basic, ethical requirements, i would start i would start putting teeth behind those ethical requirements. I would start suing people. I would start suing judges who give fundraising dinner invitations. I would start suing all of these people for their ethical failures to bring america back to some level of moral standard. I personally have no problem with going through some of these highly incompetent judges that trump put in place and impeaching them, right . We can get rid of some of these people. David, im curious about this, so when i look at a lot of these republicans, a lot of the fears that they used to express say under the obama administration, oh, well, we dont want obama to get in office and do to us what has been done to black people, this, that or the other. Republicans who engaged in these shenanigans, arent they worried that joe biden could come in and do the same thing . Arent they worried one day a democrat could come into power and abuse power the same way or do they just think democrats dont have the spine for it . Yeah. Look, jason, thats a fantastic question because i think its a question of leadership and a question of direction for my democratic friends and for joe biden. Do you accept the debasement of baseline political expectations and activities that the Republican Party has engaged in and say thats the new low . And thats the Playing Field we want to play on . Or do you rise above it . And rising above it, you create some vulnerability, right, dealing with somebody who is going to punch below the belt, you know, are you still going to play by the rules . Youve got to convince the American People that thats the right direction. And what i would say in terms of the possibility that actually joe biden and democrats could succeed with taking the high road, is if you look at the Closing Argument of the election the last 30 days, it was not really an ideological one. It was not one that was really punching down at trump. It was that message of unity and one america and joe bidens phrase whether you voted for me or not, im going to be a president to all people. Joe biden and democrats can stay on that level and bring the American People with them, well enter a new era in american politics. Alexi, as much as i love decentral trump. We have to know whats next. What is the next plan of his legal team . They cant seem to pull a victory or rabbit or anything out of a hat . Do they have any other plans . Or are they just still screaming and putting up messages on youtube pages . Its a little bit of all those thing. As you eluded to earlier in the segment theyre asking for yet another recount in georgia. Again, just really trying to go through this thing kicking and screaming to cast a larger doubt on the la gist masy of the Election Results, on the lo gist masy on president elect joe bidens win and on the legitimacy on our entire democratic process. We talked about this in segments before this show and little during this show thats a lasting effect on society that President Biden will have to address in many ways not just with folks in his own party but with republicans who are so far unwilling to really speak out in mass about the fact that what President Trump is doing is not based in reality. Thank you so much. Elie and kurt, thank you. David jolly and alexi are sticking around. Well see them later in the show. Go trump usa, usa, usa, usa as a country surpasses 12 million coronavirus cases, protests against stay at home advisories and curfews are popping up. In huntington beach, california, a large crowd of pro trump protesters gathered in defiance of common sense, health to defy the states curfew that went into effect last night. More than 1 Million People still passed through the countrys airports on friday. And the second highest single travel rush since the start of the pandemic. Despite the cdc advisory to not travel for the holidays. Joining me now to discuss, chip rogers, sara nelson and dr. Kavita patel. Thank you all so very much. Doctor, i want to start with you. What kind of danger are we seeing just in airports of tons of people crowding in for hours and hours and hours in order to prepare for a flight . Jason, thank you for bringing that up. Good morning to everyone. The biggest danger honestly is the fact that the majority of cases that were starting to see are people who are asymptomatic because of that exact phenomenon, jason. Theyre in crowded spaces. Theyre indoors. And candidly even the people Wearing Masks, jason, are not actually wearing them properly. Ive seen a lot of images just on the news today of people with their mask kind of hanging around their mouth. If youre not doing that and not staying six feet apart and candidly youre people are shouting so their voices are raised and we know that that can project particles in the air that stick around, that is literally the definition of a superspreader event. Perspreader. Yeah. Its interesting. I was just in the airport to come up here to new york and i see people Wearing Masks that are pulled down. Its like wearing a safety helmet on your butt. Its not going to work, right . Flight attendants have a particular ntrisk, right . Theyve got to be on the plane for hours on end with people who may or may not be behaving responsibility, people whoe ma or may not have covid. What kinds of things are flight attendants asking for the airlines to do to keep them protected during this heavy traffic week . Look, were in a weird spot because were essential workers andse air travel is essential t attacking the virus. But we also dont have enough work. Air travel is down 50 and businesses are not having people travel. People who are in leadership roles are following cdc guidelines and saying were not going to travel right now. So here we are, on the front lines without any direction from the federal government. I do want to recognize that the airlines have worked very closely with us on putting in place layers of safety and security. Without that leadership coming from the federal government, what you have is not enough people to help people understand how to wear those masks and how to stay safe. If everyone is wearing their masks and following those guidelines, it can actually be a controlled environment that cuts down on the spread through air travel. The problem is, we have to attack the virus. And we have to do that both in terms of Good Public Health policy and also Financial Support. Were right in the middle of this pandemic. And people have pandemic fatigue because were not being honest with the American Public about the problem. So the airlines can actually spread the vaccine, but if we dont have that Financial Support to have the people, planes and routes in place, were not going to be able to get that vaccine to the American Public so we can open up again. Sarah, im curious, have you found that all of the airlines are equally helpful . Do you find some airlines are more agreeable to what Airline Staff need than others . Do you think theyre pretty universally supported . I think that the Airline Industry overall, the people on the front lines, especially, have been incredible patriots during this time and the airlines have been responsive. What i would tell you though, jason, as this federal relief ended on september 30th, were having Financial Decisions collide with Public Health. There are stresses andth strain on the individual employees who are thinking i about, should i to work with a little tickle in my throat, or should i stay home because i really need that paycheck . All theat people who are out on furloughre themselves and the airlines trying to cut costs everywhere to get c through thi crisis. So with that financial strain comes theci likelihood of bad Public Health decision and is thatsea why congress has to ge their act together and get something passed right now. It matters to all of us to be able to open again and be safe. Chip, i want to bring this up. Ive had to travel for work recently and i was going to a particular state where i remember asking the concierge, can you make sure nobody has been in my hotel room for 24 hours and she said to me why . Because of covid. Thats why im wearing a mask. What is happening in the Hotel Industry . Are you finding that people are haphazard aboutpl what theyre doing about covid . This is a week when people are going to be in hotels, the staff could be endangered if theyre not following cdc regulations. The good news is, they are. We started a program that was adopted by the industry, every Major Management group, thousands and thousands of individuals hotels have gone beyond that and endorsed the program. Our guidelines were reviewed by the cdc and we continue to make changes. We were one of the First Industries to talk about having masks or face covers in any public space indoors. Hotels are safe. There were a group of doctors that ranked all of the activities you could do, like worse, from being at an indoor concert, todo least, staying lockedt, up in your home and th put hotels at the same level of playing golf out doors. We dont know of instances where covid explosions are happening at hotels and we follow the guidelines all along. Doctor, there is a list, a huge, list of universities tha are going to be closing after the holidays or just going virtual. Some schools have been virtual all years. Do you think schools shutting down after thanksgiving, ise that going to put a dent in anything, especially if the schools open back up in january, or is this sort of, you know, putting a bandaid on the san andres fault . Its more of the latter. At this point, jason, because the lack of any National Leadership and frankly cognitive dissonance that this is going on, schools are being forced to do exactly what you described. I think whats happened now is that weve got a terrible set of choices. Were making the ones like closing schools down, not just universities, jason, but the fact that pretty much all schools are probably going to be virtual after the thanksgiving holiday until some point in time in january is an abject failure of our ability as a country to actuallya do anything in termsf testing or at least having Even National policies that recommend shutting down certain indoor capacities andai venues. I cant believe there are people who want to have indoor games and sports when we know thats an Incredible Opportunity to spread the virus. So i think that universities, however, i just want to make a point, duke university, for example, in a recent cdc report, after having done serial testing and having a strict adherence policy for events on campus, they were able to have a less than. 05 Positivity Rate for these measures. Thats what we could be doing so businesses could stay open. There was a s way to having to avoid to make the bargain now where wereak shutting down par of our economy and denying our children and University Students their education. And i want people to remember that, this was something we absolutely, because of the leadership wete put into place, made a decision to do. And we can do something about it. We can do something about it. These things are in our control. Thank you all so very much. And theres no end in sight because the senate refused to pass any legislation to help people who are in danger this Holiday Season. These are the programs set to expire are run out at the end of the year. More than 6 million americans are still without work. And with more shutdowns possible, soon, countless americans could be out on the street during the coldest months of the year. Back with me are david jolly and Alexi Mccammond and joining us is jumaane williams. Thank you so very much. You used to put together this great list of the worst landlords and homeowners and weve seen stories about landlords and homeowners using all sorts of dirty tricks to kick people out of their homes during this pandemic. What are you seeing in new york city and what resources can people draw upon to deal with this situation . Sadly, the list will be coming out in a few weeks and were seeing people, as you mentioned, who are afraid, who right now are even facing eviction even with the socalled eviction moratoriums in place. I want to be clear that, yes, it is the republicans in the congress who are blocking so much that can be done to protect, but its not just republicans. Here in new york city, in new york state, republican governor in particular in places across the country, their lauding eviction protection that is they put in place, but theyre so poro porous, landlords are driving trucks right through them. Everyone needs protection from eviction. When it comes to homeowners, particularly those who are trying to do good, take a chance with the mortgage, puts it on the back end. Give everybody a few months of reset. Its simple if people have the courage to actually do it. David jolly, put yourself in the position of a member of congress. Youre hearing people saying, im out of my house the day after christmas. Im out of my house on january 1st. I cant get another job. Theres nothing else available. Everything is shut down. Things have gone virtual. What are you saying to them right now when basically congress is on vacation going home to eat turkey and nothing is being provided . What are you telling your constituents . I guess it depends on the heart of service that a member of congress brings. These were the moments that angered me as a republican and as a member of congress. I was one of the people that said congress should be in session five days a week, you never go home before your business is done, and this is the business of the nation right now. Congress should not be going home for thanksgiving. And we need to be focused squarely on congress. And i think its important we understand that, jason. A lot of the programs that are working when you see all of the refinances, when you see the disparity in whats called a kshaped recovery. Upper middle class is doing fine but the lower class is facing despair. Its largely under the decisionmaking of the fed to control policy, backstop lending. But these programs are squarely on the shoulders of congress to reauthorize and to fix. And if they dont do it, the disaster that is coming in the new year is significant. It doesnt have to look like it looked the first time around. Congress can take Lessons Learned from where programs worked or didnt. Take the paycheck protection act, eviction moratorium, take packages like that and reauthorize them. You can keep people in their houses or apartments by a Stimulus Program that subsidizes the landlord. You can do that. It doesnt have to be simply no economic impact. It requires congress to be in session. Theyre not. Theyre going home for thanksgiving. When i look at these numbers and ill be candid. This infuriates me. I think housing is a human right and people should be allowed to have a place to live, especially in these times of year. What exactly is the housing crisis situation going to be . With all of these people being moved out of their homes and too many people being too poored to move into them, are we looking at them a brandnew housing crisis on top of our financial crisis, on top of our covid crisis when joe biden gets into office . Yeah, unfortunately, jason, thats exactly right. And the stats that youve ticked through are incredibly harrowing to be faced with. We know how dire the situation is right now. To your point, we dont know exactly how dire its going to be. We talk about evictions during this segment which is important and something that the house packages that have been passed would address, the senate refuses to take it up. But the other thing i think about this conversation is the Homeless Population in this country. Cities are facing dire situations, begging for help and having to spend money to implement these emergency interventions to help homeless folks, putting them in different hotels. Thats leading to tensions in places like new york city and l. A. With competing ideas about what to do and they are some of our most vulnerable americans in this country who are dealing with this in a different way. Thats another piece of this, we dont know the extent of how the Homeless Population is effected or what that population size even is because the count is taken one time per year in january. That was before the pandemic really hit us hardest and so we still dont have a clear picture of that. And that is a whole other issue that congress is going to have to deal with, that President Biden is going to have to deal with, and republicans are going to have to take seriously as well when theyre considering how this package looks and what kind of money is required when we dont even know the extent of the problems because as they exist right now, this is only as bad as it is in this moment. Those factors are going to compound the longer we dont have solutions and the longer these things are happening on the ground and thats going to change the calculus for everything. It requires an honest look and an honest discussion about those things. You come home from work because many of the people being evicted, they do have jobs. They arent making enough because other people in their houses have lost their income. You go home and find all of your possessions out on the street. You have to try and find a place to live, which may be a homeless shelter, which is difficult to shelter in place, and theres Food Insecurity that a lot of people are facing. At a cleveland food bank, theyre talking about the lack of resources they have, how people are suffering. What are people doing in new york . What are resources that people can tap into if theyre dealing with Food Insecurity addition to housing insecurity in new york city and possibly around the country in the next couple of weeks. I was riding my bike around new york city and it wasnt sure which was longer, the covid testing lines or the lines to food pantries. All of the nonprofits who are filling the gaps, i want to give a shoutout to. We are seeing situations that the government didnt address that are being exacerbated. And what were seeing is squarely government inaction. People need congress to act. As i said, it is the republicans who are holding this up. But in localities and states across the nation, it isnt always. It is sometimes the democratic governors and mayors who dont have the boldness to act. Government inaction is making this work. David, i want to ask you this quickly. If you had the opportunity to have a sitdown with mitch mcconnell, what would you say to him politically is the danger hes facing right now by not doing anything . Well, screw politics, this is about morality and the right decision. What i would say the doctrines of equality and opportunity and personal responsibility that are embedded in conservativism, we often conflate them, and we shouldnt. Equality of opportunity is a calling for policy changes, to create, actually, a level platform where everybody can rise up and everybody can earn a living and everybody can have housing and access to education and health care. Equality of opportunity requires policy changes and republicans are ignoring those required changes right now. Screw politics, its about morality, i love that. Thank you. Thank you all so very much. He even hates puppies. Get ready, georgia, the negative ads are coming. Kelly loeffler doesnt want to talk about why she is forgetting rid of health care, so she will try to scare you with lies with about me. I approve this message because im staying focused on what washington could do for you. And by the way, i love puppies. Yeah, but who eats pizza with a fork . Anyway, welcome back to a. M. Joy. Im jason johnson. Reverend Raphael Warnock was right about one thing, negative adds are here and things are eating up in the peach state with the outcome determining who controls the u. S. Senate. Warnock is the pastor of ebenezer back test baptist churd he is taking heat for one sermon. You cant serve god and money, you cannot serve god and the military at the same time. America choose ye this day whom you will serve. And Kelly Loeffler and other republicans are attempting to use this and other cherrypicked sermons to paint reverend warnock as a radical tool of the extremist left. Nobody can serve god and the military. Raphael warnock attacks our military. Police power, the kind of gangster and thug mentality. Warnock attacks our police. Somebody has to open up the jails. Warnock is dangerous. No wonder that he defended this. God [ bleep ] america. The radicals radical. This is not the first time a pastor has been taken out of context. Obama had to renounce pastor wright. But Amy Coney Barretts was somehow off of the table. And joining me now is professor of political scientist. And also chair of the africanamerican studies. And also errin haines, and also host of tell me everything. And also associate professor of political science. And so i want everybody to put on their best church hats, were going to church today. Well have a conversation about faith and politics. So i want to start with you, eddie. Reverend wright, 12 years ago. I think that some people dont remember how explosive that was. And so lets play some sound. God bless america, no, no, not god bless america, god damn america. That is in the bibl. People apparently freaked out about that and thought that we were going to get a radical president. And thinking back, what is the difference between what happened with reverend wright way back in 2008 and the baseless attacks on reverend warnock today . Well, the basic difference is what happened to reverend wright in 2008, weve been through this, weve seen it before. We know that this is a bad faith representation of black liberation theology, we know there is no real effort to understand the theological nuance here. There is no real attempt to understand what a prophetic word means within the context of the black church. And lets be clear, what Kelly Loeffler dve leler oig is doing. If you just understand the ten command. S, just understanding basic theological principles, it makes no sense. So part of what we have to come is not do what we did in 2008 and that is give this kind of stupidity oxygen to breathe. Call it for what it is and if they want to really understand reverend warnocks theological orientation, tell them to read his book, he lays out his position in clear detail. He takes me on. And lets not engage or give this any kind of room or describe it anything for what it is. And that is it is just stupid racial dog whistling. Not even a whistle. Oh, yeah, they are screaming saying that he is black, hes black. And john, here is what is key to me in all of this. I didnt even think you dont have to spend a tremendous oomt of time in church. My recent Church Attendance is probably up there with going watching green leafs. But any person with a basic knowledge of scripture should know that what warnock is saying is in the book of matthew. I want to show you what the actual scripture is. Explain to me how what the reverend said is in any way antichristian or antimilitary. It seems pretty boilerplate to me. It is in no way antichristian and it is in fact the word of christ. But they are weaponizing it out of context for the purposes of scaring the held owil out of wh folks. And they keep missing the well regulated part of the second 5e78d. Second. So context aint their thing. So how much do they politics advance the word of christ . The Republican Party got followers of jesus to go against everything jesus talked about by talking about abortion which jesus never talked about. It is the same old hypocrisy all over. No ones faith is on the table, it is hypocrisy. This is a sign of how much they are terrifying the gop. The very fact that were having this discussion about what strip chur actually says shows that reverend warnocks campaign is good for politics and christianity. And so ecclesiastically, they are a little shaky because they supported President Trump. And you are there in atlanta, you are active in the community. Look, i just want to know, is reverend warnock some crazed radical down there . Is his reputation in Metro Atlanta a guy who is tying position to police stations arrest and screaming and yelling, is this in anyway aligned with what his reputation has been . That is not the Raphael Warnock that ive met, not th e ebenezer that i have attended. And im an evangelical, i dont go to ensneezer, i go to more theologically conservative churches and nothing that i find about warnock that i find scary. I think that sometimes people forget, you know, within American Christian dom that the reason why white evangelicals have the force that they have is in part because the overall evangelical numbers are being propped up by people of color who are not scared by the critique of power and seeking power at all costs and trying to cloak it in the facade of christi christianity. So i want to add to what jumps off what she said. To me this is white identity politics. I think what reverend warnock said you could find in almost any white church. So what is the best counter to it, really are they just dog whistling people who never will be vabl to vote if him anyway . I think that this is white identity politics but this beyond ignorant, this is also dangerous. We know what happened to Trinity Church in chicago. Peeve w people who fed into that then launched credible Death Threats against that congregation and that body of christ. So we know that when people feel threatened, whether fear is rational orr irrational, they at in a way that hurts black people across the country. And so not only is it tapping into that fear and iignorance, t can also launch the attack and also mobilize black voters in georgia who say how dare you attack this church that has been a recent pits for jspite for ge. Pass the plate. Alleluia. And Kelly Loeffler has been at this church and stacy evans. If you are white, black, if you are running in georgia, you have to go through that church. I will play a clip of a very prominent senator who was at Ebenezer Baptist church. Were on a first name basis, were great friends and i consider him one of the great friends ive gained over the years in being in public life. That is the one thing about public life, you make a lot of friends. You want to make sure that you share not only with the ones in the post office, but also at ebenezer church. And as a skrets ran myseveteran many veterans do we have . Raise your hand. Thank you. And that is her people proportionately than any other church that served in the service. So literally you have video here of Johnny Isakson who is loefflerings predecessor chair of the Veterans Committee praising warnock. Shouldnt that county any of the ridiculous attacks that republicans are running . Well, listen, you know, for anybody that would go to this playbook, they are about to learn the 11th commandment which thou shalt not company to the black church. It will galvanize black voters. And the spiritual home of Martin Luther king jr. , ebenezer is a place that has been bipartisan at times, it is a place that attractions a diverse congregation every week to whom refer raeverend warnock has bee preaching. I covered him when he came to ebenezer to lead that church. And again, his gospel is in keeping with the spirit of the reverend martin lighter kifa ma king jr. So this is not, you know, anything that is radical. This is not a message it is a message of social justice that i dont that people of all faiths, of all faiths, backgrounds and races have subscribed to. And so i dont think that it is something that will polarize voters, it certainly hasnt in the past and really trying to weaponize it at this point, i dont think that it is something that will work to their advantage. John, for the last 30, 40 years of this particular point probably since the rise of the morm majority under reagan, republicans and in particular white republicans have tried to say that they have singular ownership over the booibl aible christianity. I think when you make an attack lie loeffler, it is such a weak sauce. Have they lost control of the bible thumping power or do they still think there are people out here moved by this . That is a great question politically and one that the democrats have yet to be able to unlock. I think as long as there are white American Christians who believe antiabortionism is the same as what jesus talked about, the xwgop will continue their stranglehold on their single issue voters. So many who dont like donald trump, but that is their one single issue. Despite how jesus never mentioned abortion. So it is a decades long racket weve seen since Jerry Falwell who supported seg florida gags a segregation along with ronald ray beg reagan who launched to the current Political Force it is right now. And im thrilled about a debate like this because we need to talk about what actually is said in the gospels and what jesus spoke. I think that we should give Kelly Loeffler is big thank you for doing so much to drive black turnout because that will all that will come from this. Her base is already her base. Eddie, i have a slight memory of history books that i read in college of another prominent pastor who preach loth of progrea lot of progressive things. And is there a possibility that what reverend warnock has said could actually end up backfiring and make him more popular from a moral and even a political standpoint with people in that state . I pray that true. We need to be clear that the nation murdered king. But reverend warnock, not how can i put it capitulate to the move being made by loeffler and others. What happened in 2008, bomg haod to adjust and distance. There is no reason for warnock to do that, in fact he needs to go on the offensive, to defend his conception of the gospel, to understand and put forward a view of what it means to be a progressive christian in this moment. Not to quiet position, but to embrace his ministry, to embrace his understanding of christianity. And push forward. We need not allow these folk to define the terms of our witness in this moment. So, yes, to answer your question directly, it could be very well a reason to motivate black voters and other christian voters to turn out and send Kelly Loeffler back home. And you said that you are an africanamerican evangelical voter. Are they ever affected by these kinds of messages . Pastors are respected in the black community. Reverend warnock has an excellent reputation locally. Is there a small sliver of mysterious black evangelicals who will look at this and say if he is against the military, he might be against god . Does this have any impact . No, black evangelicals are democrats like other blam people ar black people are. So i wouldnt expect that this will have an i wimpact ateffler prime her base and try to scare or paint warnock in dem logic terms. But what is at stake is how we interpret what is going on here. And going back to reverend wright, we know the larger context of what he was saying. He was just critiquing america and that is just as patriotic. So were having this debate about who can critique and who is patriotic. And so in terms of looking at the god speech in saying that you cant serve anything other than god, this is what often evangelicals [ inaudible ]. Having difficulty. So i want to jump to another attack that has been leveled against reverend warnock lately is the questions about him being antisemitic, questions because he supported certain policies that call for certain rights for people in israel. And from an identity politics standpoint, white evangelicals will already be aligned with the Republican Party. Is there some group of people that is convinced that they were going it vote for refer raevere warnock but now they think that he is an antisemite . Seems like a wasted shot. It is a wasted shot. It means that it is a signal of something much deeper than a failed understanding of a biblical text. Think about the signal that happened when paul white called on angels from africa to descend on the American Election and people listened to that and thought but why . And so that can be done for paula white and her group of supporters, then certainly reverend warnock can get on people to understand what is really at stake. Just three months ago, that chush church was the site of the service for representative john lewis for which senator lofler oig a loeffler and others wrote letters. So it does not work as an electoral strategy and it does not work to bring people to the polls. And that is the key here. We have to worry about people getting to the polls. Is this being used by local organizations to gallvanize blak voters . It seems like warnock hasnt had a clear response to this. Are we thinking we dont have to respond because it is silly or trying to come with a good counterpunch . Well, you know, i think for one, you are seeing reverend warnock responding by living his faith. We heard last night that Kelly Loeffler tested positive for coronavirus. What did reverend warnock do . He said that he is praying for Kelly Loeffler and her health. And so, you know, i think that what black voters are thinking in this moment is that they see this the same way that they see, you know, republicans or folks who maybe want to quote reverend king but then not really subscribe to his principles. The church that king called his spiritual home, that these people are trying to label warnock as a radical just as they would try to labeling some of dr. Kings messages that they didnt like at radical. They understand, you know, kind of what the code is even if it is trying to come through scripture. And it is interesting, if your aunt says bless you, you know she is showing trade. But when the pastor says bless you, i think that he is serious about it. I think strategically, you know, there are some elements in Democratic Politics in georgia who are saying, hey, reverend warnock needs to go on the offensive. What is the power from a strategic messaging standpoint of the pastor saying you i know you attacked me, but i still love you and i hope you get through the coronavirus. What is the impact of that messagingwise . That is serving god so not being worried about the political costs of doing the right thing. But i want to go back to earlier are points. I want reverend warnock to call it out for the racism that it is. This has been callinged in to question with the Trump Administration because people called out his racism and he still got elected president. But the Empirical Literature before that pointed out that you need to call out racism for people to discounts it. I was heartened to see a new ad where reverend warnock has Law Enforcement who is now coming out in defense of him and noting that he doesnt believe in defunding the police. I think that he will have to do more to counter act the negative messages that are coming out. And ultimately this is a turnout race and so, you know, whichever side does the best job at get out the vote will be the side that wins. Absolutely. And that is a smart strategic move on his behalf. Thank you all so much. Next up, the democratic hand wringing over the 2020 elections ends right here. Research shows people remember commercials with nostalgia. Dundundaaa the first big screen. We really need to limit thunks window time. Not now. The birds are on. In my day we fought them. Let me live my life weve heard a lot of talk about what went wrong for the democrats in down ballot races. It is true Congressional Democrats as a whole did worse than expected and predicted. But we also have to look at what went right. Case in point, georgias 7th Congressional District where Carolyn Bordeaux won with 50 of the votes. One of just three house seats from n. The country that flipped from red to blue. The other two in north carolina. And joining me now a congress elect bordeaux. So happy to have you here. All through the last two weeks, you had democrats nationally saying that we were damaged, hit by defund the police, by black lives matter. It totally took us out. And yet you still won. I want to play this ad that was used to attack you and i want to get your response to it on the other side. They attacked Gwinnett County police at their homes. Bordea bordeauxs response, marching with those calling cops racist. She believes that even pedophiles should have voting rights. Taken cash from groups that fff. She is a dangerous reckless extremist. That is essentially a mad libs of altright talking points. Yet you still won. What was your reaction and how did you counter the attacks . So thank you for having me he. And in the 7 district during the protests, we had the death and murder of ahmaud arbery, george floyd, breonna taylor, rashard brooks. Within the 7th district, there were protests and a Diverse Community showed up. Often organized by High School Students just saying come and join me. And thousands of people would show up. And, you know, this was not a movement that was seen here as something that was violence or damaging, it was a moment of extraordinary coming together of the community. And ive been clear, ive never said defund the police. I actually supported a black man running for sheriff in Gwinnett County and who won his race. So it is about a partnership with the police to restore faith between the police and the very Diverse Communities of the 7th district and that was the message we leaned heavily on. And i often pointed out that for most americans, black lives matter protests were a bunch of High School Kids standing outside a target saying black lives matter oig. It un were you ever afraid that what was seen in downtown atlanta might be associated with you or saying that i can condemn violence and at the same time be this favor of protests . Absolutely. And we had the leadership of mayor lance bottoms and everybody was clear, we dont support violence. That is not where we are, but we do need to have a really serious conversation about raise and ce community. And multiple times these really horrible incidents. And we need to address that problem and this whole, you know, what the right wing is doing is trying to distract attention from the important conversation that we need to be having in our community. And the key thing is, we all condemn violence especially the violence by police on unarmed people. We condemn violence by vigilantes against black people. And that brings me to janel. One of the other big changes that weve seen in georgia is what happened in the georgia 6th. Take a look at some of the data. If you look it from the 2016 election to the 2018 election, the 2017 special los angeles with jon ossoff, it has been like a 30 point swing. And the current congresswoman mcbath is literally a woman of t movement because her son was shot. How was she able to counter attacks that she was a radical given the fact that she is actually an activist but still won this suburban georgia . I think there are a few things. First of all, one can they evha never discount the power of a personal story and it is difficult to look someone in the face who has had their child killed in a gas station parking lot by a white supremacist and imply that that person simply needs to pipe down or that their concern is radical. So i think her personal story along with effective campaigning is effective. And also the demographics of the area that she represents that the newly elected congresswoman represents have changed dramatically over the time period that you highlighted with that data. The reality is that these are areas that are increasingly diverse and are on the edge of becoming minority majority districts. So you simply have to face the reality that if you want politics to be relevance, if you want policy to be relevant to the lives of people who live there, there is no way to avoid these conversations and the time in which you can run a campaign simply by terrifying people by even making any mention of racism or the reality, the toll of racism, is really running short. They will have to come up with another plan. Congress woman, you are a professor like me, so you know some of the theorys and things that go into campaigns before im of the mind set that the kind of fern who could be influenced by the ads run against you, that is the kind of person that wasnt going to vote for a democrat 24i wanyway. When you ran after coming so close in 2018, did you have a feeling that the 2020 location was just about turning out your base or did you really feel that there were some people who you had to flip from republican to democrat in order to win this year . Well, i have a philosophy of le leaving no voter on the table. So i worked for everybody. But we are seeing enormous demographic shift here and our job was to build on efforts such as those of stacy abrams to reach out and amplify what she is doing on the ground. Within this district, we had around an addition of 150 new registered voters, so we went from under 400,000 registered voters 550,000. And it is about to 20about 20 africanamerican. And we just worked hard to reach out to all of the Diverse Communities and engage them in ways that we really had not prior to 2016. So that is what we need to hear, find your constituents. Thank you both so much. And coming up, the covid crisis gets worse for americans especially black and brown americans. And talk about that next. More than 18 of all covid deaths have been among black americans. Far outweighing their portion of the population. And new data from the cdc shows black, latinx and indigenous americans are four times more likely to be hospitalized for covid than white americans. Figures to highlight the racial disparitieses as old as iif not older than the nation itself. Dr. Ashby, these numbers are terrifying. It is killing black people almost described as an extermination. Why is the nation not more terrified about the rate of black death during covid . Jason, before i even get to into it, i want to say that im on a moment right now. I dont know if the professor ribs me, but it is an honor to be on with him. So basically, your previous guest did discuss being tired of racism. And the message is that black lives matter. All too often they are undervalued. We have a lot of racist history and a lot of racist institutions. And i would argue that the Health Care System is the most racist. If you look at the Life Expectancy for africanamericans compared to whites, it is almost four years less. If you look at black males in particular, almost ten years less. And that is terrible. And there are disparities in diabetes, cancer. Long story short, blacks do poorly. And when the pandemic was upon us, it wasnt a surprise to me. And i in fact predicted this in march that people at the bottom of society will die at a higher rate and it was something that i didnt want to be right on. And i see it every day. Im on call right now, and i just took care of a patient that came in with a stroke. Why are . Because when she went home, she didnt get the appropriate medications because she had had a stroke and the doctors let her go home without the appropriate preventive care. And so when we talk about these disparities, i think that it is too sanitized. It lets us get away while people get mad at the criminal justice system. Health care disparities are a form racism. Inequalities are forms of racism and we need to call it what it is. Because right now, we have an existential threat where were in the midst of it in our community. So if you look at the surge going on right now, we saw black folks die at a higher rate, twice as likely to die. So we have to put in the litigation measures and make sure that we have access to the vaccine and we communicate with our constituency, and also we talk about hospital capacity. A bit reason black folks die is because they were getting turned away from hospitals and going to inferior 4079s ahospitals and td the price. Sorry for being long winded. No, we cant be long winded when were talking about peoples lives. There is no there is no time limit on this when talking about black death. Eddie, i wanted to show you a piece that i wrote a couple months ago where this was it was horrifying to me. And i think that some of these messages as weve seen the surge also have to be about telling particular communities the danger. Weve talked about heading into thanksgiving, weve talked about people not traveling. I pointed out in my piece that black people are dying of covid at a rate higher than he with died during the middle passage, that covid death rates have wiped out what amounts to the entire auc. What do you think needs to be the message heading into again a Holiday Season where people will travel, what needs to be the message in the black community about how serious this pandemic is and how we need to change our behavior above and beyond the things that we cant control . My goodness, first to see you. And you know, jason, it is so difficult to put in words what you just laid out in terms of my feelings. Did seems that we have it ask ourselves the question, will you be complicit this n. Your oin y death. There are some things that we can control and so we need to ask ourselves what are those things. Because if we dontsd, well t,n accomplice ilt in the death of those that we love. And so i think that it is important for us to continue to lay this out, but we also have to put kind of describe the background conditions. We though whknow what it means n certain areas and how staying at home or sheltering in place isnt a feasible idea. We know that we disproportionately recommended among those among workers and take public transportation. We know there are choices that are not really in our hands that place us in harms way. So the underlying condition is american racism. You think about what happened in the pandemic of 1918 1919, we died disproportionately there too. Hospitals were segregated. We did not have access to broad health care they didnt even count our numbers. We died at have a ordinary numbers and folk didnt care. And it is almost like this reputation of history. So the underlying condition that places us in harms way requires us to name it for what it is and that is the disregard for black life and how it is being manifest now. And during research for a book this summer, i looked at old articles in the chicago defender and baltimore afro that talked about how similar this pandemic was to the fact that initially there was sort of a stereotype, this isnt something that black people get. People were are saying that 100 years ago. To the nurse shortage and the fact that africanamericans nurses were being kept from working in certain places. And one of what weve seen is that africanamericans have legitimate reasons to distrust and have concerns about the Health Care System. From a reporting and informational standpoint, how do we break through peoples anxieties and fears about going into see doctors . Because i encounter people who say im coughing, im freezing, im afraid if i go into the doctor that i will catch covid. Yes, and listen, that is a legitimate concern. You know, with hospitals having to deal with the surge of the coronavirus pandemic, you know, that is a place where people are worried about protecting themselves both the Frontline Worker w4s who are there and patients who may need to come there for any number of reasons including the opponecoronavirus pandemic. But my reporting has shown a cycle that especially a lot of the same black women especially who were doing a lot of the organizing around this election with were also checking this with those same black communities around their concerns about coronavirus. So asking them do you have ppe, are you taking the correct precautions that you need to take in terms of social distancing, what are the things that you need. And not just from a Public Health spec spec differenperspe also the economic perspective, a lot of times they are coming home to multi generational families but have to make the choice between earning a living and protecting their health. So were in a very dangerous season where the black and Brown Community are getting a very wrong dual message that not only are your votes in question, but there is a question of whether their lives hear because we are not centering black and brown are the ones disproportion naturally pinsecure, housing insecure, everything from Student Loan Debt to you name it. Housing insecure, everything from Student Loan Debt to you name it. Frsz the inquau the inequalities need to be front and center so that people can understand the seriousness of the toll of this on those communities in particular. And really quick, you are in front of president elect joe biden. You have 30 seconds to explain to him what targeted policies need to being implemented to specifically address coronavirus in the black community. What do you tell him . Oh, i appreciate you. So first and foremost, were in the middle of a surge. So the main issue that im concerned about is access to therapeutics more specifically outpatient theire pew sticks. Eli lilly, i have no idea how to get that for our patients. Pew s. Eli lilly, i have no idea how to get that for our patients. There is an issue of capacity and we need plans to redistribute patients to other hospitals where capacity and not have patients withdying in the hallways. And we need targeted programs that actually go in and connect with the people who have gained the trust of the Community First of all of all to then inform them and provide that information and also access to care. So there is much more, but ill leave it there. That works. Thank you so much. This is a very important issue and i hope Biden Administration is listening. I dont know what kind of, like, an maniac trump needs to find out where states are. Among the greatest hits of the Trump Administration was trump displaying a doctored map scribbled on with an inaccurate claim the storm would let alabama. Trump rolled back environmental safeguards, 25 of them, making soaring Green House Gas levels a legacy of his presidency. That guy wants to open up the wildlife refuge in alaska to oil drilling. Joining me now, colorado congressman, member of the House Select Committee on climate crisis. Thank you for speaking to me. Were going to start simple. How much damage has trump cost this country and the worlds environment during his four years in office . Good morning. Its good to be with you, jason. Its hard to quantity. You called them the greatest hits. As you look over the course of 40 years the way in which this administration disregarded our environment in every term, whether on the regulatory side during the first two years of his administration when he had a Republican Congress that was co complicit. Its unfortunate and disheartening. Im thankful president elect biden and Vice President elect harris will be able to finally have an administration that listens to the scientists and follows the science. Both with respect to Climate Change and the Public Health crisis and covid19 pandemic. Congressman, other than rejoining the paris climate agreement which trump destroyed and now we know bide and harris will rejoin. What are other international or even Regional Environmental treaties that you would ask that this Incoming Administration prioritize in order to get us back on track and make up for the last four years . Well, with respect to the international question, i think president elect biden talked about on the campaign trail a great deal of showing leadership on the International Stage and making clear to the rest of the world the United States is back and ready to play a Global Leadership role in the fight against Climate Change. Id also say this. Theres a risk of looking at the multiple crises and challenges that were facing with myopic play. We have a great deal of work in overcoming the Public Health risks and economic fallout. But also the existential threat of Climate Change. In my view, theres an opportunity to address both of the crises simultaneously. And president elect biden has talked about this in the build back better plan that he articulated during the course of the campaign. You essentially invest significant resources in modernizing our electric grid, creating goodpaying jobs which also in turn helps address the double digit unemployment that we are experiencing in some parts of the country as a result of the covid19 pandemic. So theres a lot of potential actions that i think we can take in the coming year to address both of those challenges. Inpresident elect biden has been clear were trying to shut down covid, not the economy. Caring for the environment is seen to be in contrast with taking care of the economy, but weve seen under trump all of these environmental regulations hes taken back has cost us money. There was a 7,000,000,020year contract for natural gas that the United States arranged with a French Company that was rejected because our natural gas is too dirty. What kinds of things will be enhanced for the country once we get in line with cleaning up our environment more . Well, i think the economic costs of not fighting Climate Change and moving the needle in that regard are incalculable. You articulated that. I think theres an opportunity to ensure the goals are not mutually exclusive. We can grow our economy, great good paying jobs and protect our environment. In colorado as our viewers are aware, weve had a brutal wildfire season. Two of the three largest wildfires in the history of colorado. 134 years. It happened in the last 90 days. They occurred in northern colorado. Theres an opportunity to invest resources in hiring folks to do reforestation, the Forest Services budget has been gutted under the Trump Administration. Theres a real opportunity to improve in that regard. So, again, sky is the limit in terms of whats possible and again, im grateful that president elect biden will be able to help us lead the charge on that front. Congressman, thank you so very much.
