Information on that and on trumps public pitch to hold the next g7 meetings at a Global Leaders at his trump resort in doral, florida, which would literally mean seven Foreign Governments, eight, including russia, if he includes Vladimir Putin as he said he wants to do, paying the trump family for lodging at an official event. All of this comes at a time when trump himself has made 213 visits to his own properties including at least 98 specifically to play golf at a cost to you the taxpayer of about 109 million. According to the trump website trumpgolfcount. When the attorney general of the United States is preparing to pay the trump hotel in d. C. 30,000 to hold a holiday party, and when 135 house members have come out in support of an impeoplement requirement and House Judiciary Committee to vote to define what jerry nadler calls an ongoing impeachment investigation into the president s conduct. Joining me is Natasha Bertran of politico, one of two reporters on the story. Break this down for a moment. How unusual is it for a military transport to stop at a private hotel, any private hotel, rather than like ramstein airbase in germany and the other official military bases where they stop. Very unusual, joy. Before 2017, it was actually even more unusual but since around october of that year, u. S. Military planes have been landing with a lot more frequency at this small airport, about 30 miles away from trumps scottish resort. Theyve made about 11 million off of u. S. Military expenditures, off of the fuel that theyre selling to the u. S. Military, and that really is kind of at the heart of all of this, because the airport is really necessary in order to keep trumps resort afloat, because the nearest airport other than that tiny airport is about an hour and a half away in glasgow. So what were seeing is not only are they using the airport in order to boost both the airport itself for the Scottish Government and also trumps resort about 30 miles away, theyre also sending the crew that go there to refuel overnight to stay at trumps resort, which then puts even more money into the pocket of the president , because the military is having to pay for the per diem allowances for food and drinks and the rooms themselves. Lets go into a little bit of this excellent story you coreported. According to a letter, the panel, these are the judicial panel, sent to the pentagon in june, the military has spent 11 million on fuel at the airport you just talked about, prestwick, airport, the closest airport to trump turnberry, since october 2017. Fuel that would be cheaper if it was purchased aft a u. S. Military base. Per your reporting was Prestwick Airport doing well financially before donald trump started using it instead of the airport they would normally use . No, its been struggling financially for years. It was bought by the Scottish Government in 2013 for one pound because it was essentially going into bankruptcy. The Scottish Government considered selling it as recently as june of this year, because it was still struggling financially, but it has seen a boon from these expenditures that the u. S. Military is spending on fuel at the airport, and its kind of keeping the airport afloat. What were seeing, though, is that the crew members are kind of confused by whats going on, because theyve never before had to make this stop in scotland, let alone in the United Kingdom at all. Usually its spain or germany or the azores or italy, where they stop to refuel, but never before have some of these crews ever stopped at this tiny airport in scotland, let alone at this tiny airport, so they are kind of baffled by this, which is why one of them blew the whistle and told a friend, and that is ultimately how we came upon this story. And the other issue of an entity that was not doing well financially before donald trump made this dramatic change, which weve never seen a former president do before, it would be the equivalent of president jimmy carter forcing the pentagon to buy its peanuts from his peanut farm, right . He of course got rid of his peanut farm when he became president but thats the equivalent, forcing you to do business with the president. Here is another piece of your reporting, taken together the incidents raise the possibility that the military has helped keep trumps turnberry resort afloat p, the property lost 4. 5 million in 2017, but revenue went up 3 million in 2018. The were indication of this, once donald trump became president and weve seen reports for reasons of his brand being deteriorated he is not making as much money on his properties or maybe they were losing money anyway, suddenly flush but flushed with government money. Is that the reporting . Am i accurate in that reporting, in recounting your reporting . Yes, i think so. This could be a violation of the domestic emoluments clause, because the president other than his own salary is not supposed to get any money from the federal government. The fact the u. S. Military seems to be spending money at trump resorts seems to be in direct violation of that which is what the House Oversight committee was getting to, when they wrote the letter, asking about the documents who approved this because it could be a violation of the constitution. What we also saw is Foreign Governments might be exploiting this as well. We dont know whether militaries of Foreign Governments and foreign potential adversaries are trying to curry favor with the president by propping up his resort in turnberry by landing at this airport, by spending money there. This is all kind of interconnected, and just because the u. S. Military is doing it, doesnt mean that others arent taking cues from that. Whereas the military should be setting an example here and not, you know, allowing the president to profit off of the military, what were seeing is that theyve actually just kind of gone along with this and we still dont know who approved it at the highest levels. My understanding, from also reading your report is that the military is not being forthcoming with information that congress is asking for. Is that accurate . Correct. Congress wrote them a letter, congress wrote the pentagon a letter in june of this year, a couple months after they were first tipped off to this happening in april and asked for all documents related to the approval process, the per diem allowances they set aside for this, whether they were higher than usual, making special accommodations for this kind of retreat basically for the crew members to trump turnberry, and they never got any response. And so with the House Overnight Committee is saying now, within the next week if they dont get answers theyre going to be forced to take alternative steps. What that means is anyones guess but we are speculating that it potentially is a subpoena. Right, and there is also an impeachment, we should remind our audience there is an impeachment investigation, actually stepping up a level as of next week, the House Judiciary Committee is going to take a formal vote on really defining what the impeachment inquiry will look like, this impeachment investigation, which is what the house judiciary chairman is calling it, for the audience to understand, there is already a sort of preimpeachment process in place in congress. It looks like this is something that potentially could be a part of it. I want to read to the audience, we keep saying emoluments clause. I want to read what that is, it is the following. It says, this is a constitutional emolument, no title of nobility shall be granted by the United States, and no Person Holding any office of profit or trust under them shall, without the consent of congress, accept any present emolument office or title of any kind whatever from any king, prince or foreign state. Thats the foreign emoluments clause and essentially in plain english means no president can accept any gift or any sort of installment of becoming a lord or a gentry or member of their government or anything of value from a Foreign Government and just for the audience, i want to now get back to some of this other reporting, outside of your current report. We know that Donald Trumps attorney general, william barr, presumably the countrys attorney, hes actually acting as trumps attorney, is about to pay donald trump 30,000 to host a party at his resort. We know that the Vice President of the United States paid Donald Trumps family to stay in his resort, rather than staying in dublin, which is where his meetings were. Here is donald trump justifying that, attempting to justify that on wednesday. I never spoke to the attorney general about using my hotel. I have a lot of hotels all over the place, and people use them because theyre the best. I mean, you know, theyre the best, and i know the attorney general is using it, as i read in the paper to this day i havent spoken to him about it, but hes using the hotel. And the justification that the Justice Department made for barr using the hotel is they said that no other hotels were available, and so thats why theyre down to using Donald Trumps hotel. The great producers here at this show looked up how many hotels there are, there are approximately 132 hotels with 31,673 hotel rooms that are located in the washington, d. C. , area. The greatest metropolitan washington, d. C. , area has 695 hotels with 111,216 rooms, including those located within d. C. Proper. Donald trump lists 11 Hotel Properties on its website, his company. One of which is in washington, d. C. , where he took over the old hotel office that he leases from the United States government. He doesnt own that hotel, he leases most of these hotels. Do you have reporting on just how many of these properties that donald trump owns are taking in money from the federal government in one way or another . Thats a great question, joy. We dont have an exact number, but you know, i think the justifications that he continues to give, which is that well, its easier for the secret service to protect my properties or well, these are the best hotels in town. I mean, it would be a lot easier to believe if this wasnt clearly a pattern that was emerging at this point. To the point now where even the u. S. Military is spending money at his properties, and therefore hes profiting off of it, because remember, he did not fully divest from his businesses when he became president , so thats why all of this is so problematic, but you know, this is just its hard to believe for example that the secret service has, its easier for them to protect these properties, because when i spoke to former secret Service Agents and this was mike pences excuse for staying at doonbeg in ireland, they said its not easier to protect the properties because weve been there before, because theyre the president s. Its actually harder because it could make us complacent and we have to go through the exact same process as we boo anywhere else in order to protect the president or the Vice President or whoever is under secret service protection, so these excuses they keep making are just becoming increasingly unbelievable, and i think thats why now congress is focusing so much on the potential violations here of the constitution, because that seems to be really where the heart of all of the dri grift is here. You have to suspend a lot of disbelief to believe it would be easier and safer to protect the president or Vice President at a posh trump hotel than at a military base. That is where the military stops, protecting a military installation or camp david. Its just cheaper and easier to have the secret service rent golf carts at Donald Trumps golf resorts. Yeah, okay, no one with any sense believes that. Natasha bertran you are a fantastic reporter. Thank you. This is great work on your part. Please keep us updated, thank you. Thank you. We have a friend right now who has lost, he was trying to save a little boys life. He ran back in to save the other childs life, and the tide took him out. We havent heard from him since. As we were running, we were pushing bodies on the side to get through. Reporter bodies pushing people, deceased people . Yes, that were floating in the water. Wow, those are some of the heartwrenching stories that were hearing out of the bahamas in the wake of Hurricane Dorian. The death toll rose to 43 and the Health Minister is warning the grim number is likely to grow significantly. The u. S. Coast guard and other agencies are assisting with rescue and recovery efforts. The devastation has made tim possible to reach many areas where people are still stranded and homeless. Lets bring in Morgan Chesky in nassau, bahamas. Youre at a relief center. Can you tell us what youre seeing there . Whats going on there today . Reporter joy, good morning. I can tell you right now over the past several days weve seen this airport really transform into the hub for all of the search and rescue efforts and the ever growing relief effort here to help those in those northern bahamian eyes of grand abaco, treasure key and grand bahama. The rescue efforts you can hear the helicopters probably going over me, we do know that those coast guard choppers are working nonstop, trying to reach those inaccessible areas as you mentioned to bring the critically injured here, but what weve seen become the growing need or the people who may not necessarily be injured to the point where they need to be immediately evacuated, but those folks who simply have nowhere else to go on those hardhit islands who are now growing dehydrated by the day, many not having a real meal since before dorian struck and that is why relief efforts are starting to at least try to gain a foothold in those hardhit areas. We know the airports have been reopened in marsh harbor, and in treasure key, on the abacos islands. We know the planes loaded with supplies are expected to land there today to get those people what they need to make it through the next several days, because this is a process thats going to be not taking weeks or months, but years to rebuild from. So joy, as it stands right now, very active effort here. Weve seen tents go up here at the airport. People coming off these planes and helicopters from those devastated areas to at least try to reconnect with family and begin that long road of recovery. Joy . Morgan chesky, thank you very much. Be safe out there and thank you very much for that reporting. Really appreciate it. Joining me is linda mackey, consell general of the bahamas and marlon, thank you for being here. Madam consul general, what is the status, weve heard potentially thousands of people still unaccounted for and missing. What can you tell us about that . Well, theres a lot of rumors going around and thats not confirmed. We know for sure that we have confirmed deaths in the amount of 40 plus. With regards to those missing were waiting the accurate count on that so we dont have sufficient information to confirm any numbers at this time. And where are people able to how are people able to connect . What is the system for people to try to locate missing loved ones, whether they are in the bahamas themselves or in the states or anywhere in the world trying to locate their family members . We have two mechanisms in place and other support mechanisms but the main one is osocial services. We have a desk primarily for that purpose and a web page, called dorian people search, where you will see names posted of persons that are already accounted for and if theres someone that youre looking for, you can add their names, and they will respond to you in a very quick manner. Staying with you for one more moment, the bahamas is not an island, its an archipelago of islands. It isnt all of the bahamas impacted. Its really just two major islands, grand bahama and abaco. Nassau, the city where all of the Government Agencies are located is intact, working, operational. Everything is functioning. We have many other islands that we can accommodate persons who need help and we also have our tourism offices still very open for business. Theres a lot of other islands that can accommodate visitors, so were still here open for business, and all of the islands are working together to help family members in as much as they can. And marlon, my friend go on. Sorry, there is a lot of displacement, i just wanted to add that. Marlon, a good friend of mine, im so glad youre here this morning. We know that the bahamian and miami connection is very strong historically going back, a lot of bahamian nationals and people descendants from bahamians in miami. What is the reaction there . Is there, from what youre seeing, a robust enough relief effort coming from the United States to the bahamas . Very robust. Not only from regular folks but also our local government, miamidade county, constitutional the cities, including broward county, the response has been so overwhelming, so supportive for one of the hardest working consulate generals across the nation, miss mackey, working overnight. We have citizens that are going to various locations for dropoff locations, joy, in coconut grove, all the way up to palm beach. Theyre going to different fire stations, to the next challenge right now is for us to collect all of these items that have been donated and get them shipped either by plane or by boat and as you mentioned, the bahamas is an archipelago with several islands, over 700. Only two are impacted so its logistically takes a bit of a challenge to get those items directly to nema, bahamas. What are you hearing, youre on the radio, so what are you hearing, the really terrifying stories of people attempting to rescue others, and then not being heard from. What are you hearing from the community there in miami . We just went through a category 5 storm. You must hear these stories. Were trying to recover in an unprecedented event. Its very important folks be patient, very calm and think very clearly as to what we need to do. What can you do . What power do you have to donate supplies that are needed. Do you have any friends that have other resources that can be donated . Right now we need donated trucks and vans to pick up all of these donated items and take them to centralized locations. I really implore everyone to kind of focus, be calm, be very patient, support what the consul general is doing and the consulate and all the ngos stepping up the plate from the states and all over the world. The preparation people were made to be hit by the category 5 in florida, some of that is beneficial, now people have supplies they might be able to donate out they were holding potential. Already for themselves . We have been saved by grace. A lot of hurricane guild out there. We share this experience with the caribbean region. This is not our first rodeo, right . You had ivan, grenada, maria and irman and dominique in puerto rico. We know what we need to do, and as floridians and the folks on the eastern seaboard, if you have surplus supplies, turn your attention to pass on this grace to the people of the bahamas. And ms. Mackey, i want to just end with you, madam consul general, because i think that is one of the things people immediately what their heart wants do is donate. There is a website people can go to, where if people want to donate and hasupplies theyve stored up, where can they send it or repeat the website and the information so people can help. Okay, at the bahamas consulate we have a website where you can donate and volunteer, so its hurrica hurricanereliefbahamas. Com and the bahamas government has the nema website, which is our emergency, its our play on fema, so we have nema also has a website that they can also go to, and they can make donations, and they can also volunteer. All right, consul general linda mackey, thank you very much. Marlon hill, great to talk to you, even under these disturbing, horrible circumstances. Hopefully things will get beat better. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you. Coming up, it seems as if the National OceanicAtmospheric Administration, get this, is being used to defend the use of a sharpie. As the world focuses on the humanitarian tragedy in the bahamas, donald trump spent the entire week obsessed with trying to prove the lie he tweeted that Hurricane Dorian would impact alabama, a lie by the way that unnecessarily scared people in that state was somehow true. In the oval office on wednesday, he had his acting dhf chief bring him a map which someone altered using a sharpie to include alabama and now an emblem of the trump era, making other officials debase themselves to back up the lie. Last night the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration put out a statement backing up trump and refuting a tweet by the Birmingham NationalWeather Service saying it spoke in absolute terms that were inconsistent with probabilities from the best forecast products available at the time. Joining me is rick wilson, republican media stratiest and the author of everything trump touches dies. Lets jump into this quickly, rick. The original when donald trump tweeted alabama is going to get it, scaring everyone in alabama for no reason. Yes. The Birmingham NationalWeather Service the authority in that tweet corrected him, alabama will not see any impacts from dorian. We repeat, no impacts from dorian will be felt across alabama. The system will remain too far east. And now the national, the noaa, which the federal agency supposed to serve the public is saying no, no, they were premature. Why are people willing to lie in this way to defend donald trump . Can you explain this to me . You know, joy, theres this arc that we see over and over again from crazy to compromised to corrupt in this administration and what has happened here is Mick Mulvaney or someone else in the white house got on the phone to the head of the noaa screamed bloody murder and said the president would find them all and send them to gitmo if they didnt make a statement that tried to conform his craziness to reality and of course it would never work. This is a terrible lie. It is an administration that shows that theyre willing to break down the public trust in an agency we need to trust. You need to trust the noaa during a big storm. What happens when invest 49, the storm in the atlantic right now starts steaming toward us, if its coming and people like oh, maybe theyre going to say whatever trump wants them to say. This is a really sad moment in government, and it is an example of how the fish rots from the head down, and the corruption spreads and these people are willing and terrified of donald trump so much that they wont speak the truth no matter what it does to the mission, their agency, or their reputation. We were even seeing the military being compromised by spending money at his resorts and not being willing to be forthcoming to congress. If hes actually been able to corrupt the military to get them to go along, were really sunk. I want to go into a little bit about deep per. This is the spaghetti model he used to base, this is the spaghetti chart were using to seeing bill karins using on our air, these are all the probabilities that he altered. Someone altered and drew a big sharpie line on it to add alabama when alabama had a 10 probability of getting maybe 30mileanhour winds, someone added it, they put that on screen in the white house, with the press there, for them to see it, and then trump pretended we no idea how it got there. The Washington Post has a report out, and i should note that nbc has noter have tide this reporting, this is what the Washington Post reported this week. It was trump who used the black sharpie to mark up an official National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration map, according to a white house official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. No one else writes like that on a map with a black sharpie the official said of the map. By the way its a crime to alter this official document, a crime. Theyre saying donald trump he is the only one who signs things with a big marker so now the Washington Post says he did it. Do you buy that, he drew on it of course . Of course donald trump drew this on the map, and he used sharpies, famous for using sharpies on sending articles to people and marking them up with a big fat black felt tipped sharpie. Of course he did it. Its not even worth arguing whether he did it or not. What i think is the big picture here is that as in Everything Else in the alternative facts white house, theyre asking america to believe a big lie, and its disappointing and its terrifying that half of these people out there, you know, who love donald trump are screaming oh, that was the official map. That sharpie is the official thing. Its real. It happened. The great leader says it happened. This isnt north korea. This isnt soviet russia. This is a country where the actual facts ought to matter, used to matter but they dont anymore because half of the political spectrum in this country loves the fact that donald trump is insane and does insane things and lies about them, they find that greatly amusing. That is their version of pay purview, of real housewives of the bedlam of 1600 pennsylvania avenue, and he faces no consequences for it ever. Here is the thing i want to quickly, one thing you said its not the soviet union. This is very sovietlike, altering photos to change history. Let me just give you a brief list of the times that donald trump has gotten other people to join in the lie. Sure. The inauguration crowd size, sean spicer lied about that and screamed from an official statement about it, alleged widespread voter fraud 2016, created a commission to taxpayer money he knows didnt happen, criminals and unknown middle easterners mixed in with migrant caravan. Altered a video to make a reporter look physically abusive to a press aide, traffickers tying up Migrant Women and silencing them with tape, officials then tried to make seem true. The claim that nearly 4,000 secretariats are blocked from the u. S. , also a lie. As somebody who was a republican who worked in republican communications, how is he getting people to go along with this . You and i both know a lot of the people work for him and we heard the reporting, dont believe this stuff and dont even believe him. Why are they doing it, rick . Its funny, joy, i have a new piece this morning in the daily beast and basically my organize. Argument is trump is entering the eccentric dictator phase of his presidency and that always requires a group of sycophants, a group of people who absolutely no better but for their own political power, own position, their own wealth, own ability to influence the discussion, theyre going to lie, theyre going to say of course the sky is bright purple today, mr. President. Of course the hurricane was steaming toward birmingham. Youre so right, sir, they wink and nod and tell reporters behind the scenes, they go off the record and tell reporters hes out of his mind, but in the public facing side, they violate their oath to the constitution and to the office, that theyre going to uphold this country and protect this country and they support donald trump. There is a culture and a cult around donald trump that loves the lie. Even if they know its a lie, they love it, and they push it, and its become an amusement for them. Ive run out of time but quickly ask you one more question. The question then is the base of the party thatse out of it if dont want to come out of it themselves. Is there a way to break reality nto the reality of the base of point or are they just gone . Its over, joy. There is no Republican Party. Its the trump party now and they are awaiting the day the great leader tells them to drink the koolaid so they can rise up to the comet. Its over. The partys dead. Its trumps party. It will go down and die with him. You did title your book appropriately in that case. Rick wilson, great to talk to you. Thank you very much. Thanks, joy. God help us all. Thank you. Coming up, a story that America Needs to focus on before its too late. Just because scaring is caring. The guy who actually gave me that phrase will be here next, Election Security, thats what he were talking about next. We trust usaa more than any other company out there. They give us excellent customer service, every time. Our 18 year old was in an accident. Usaa took care of her car rental, and getting her car towed. All i had to take care of was making sure that my daughter was ok. If i met another veteran, and they were with another insurance company, i would tell them, you need to join usaa because they have better rates, and better service. Were the gomez family. Were the rivera family. Were the kirby family, and we are usaa members for life. Get your Auto Insurance quote today. Lets see. Nope. It is not letting me vote for who i want to vote for. Lets see here. That viral video shows a touch screen machine changing a voters ballot during last months republican gubernatorial primary runoff in mississippi. At least three malfunctioning Voting Machines were reported in two mississippi counties. Officials dont believe it affected the outcome of the election, but it underscores the need for better security for Voting Machines and raises troubling questions about whether we can and will have free and Fair Elections in the u. S. Going forward. Joining me is adam levin, founder of cyber scout. Im not sure why these officials would say that they dont believe it changed the outcome of the election. I dont know how they can possibly know that but okay, thats what the officials are saying because of course they dont want people to be afraid. Thats right. You wrote a piece, you coined the term scaring is caring, which i quote a lot. You wrote a piece that scared the hell out of me in request the 2020 election is set to be hacked if we dont act fast. Please explain. Were way behind the curve on this. Different counties and states and cities are trying to step up their game and Homeland Security and the Intelligence Committee are trying to get together to make it work, youll note that the president of the United States and the majority leader of the United States senate have absolutely no desire whatsoever to pass any legislation at all that allocates any more money in order for us to strengthen our voting systems not to mention the fact that there is this mixed messaging coming out from the white house. On the one hand, we all say there is a problem, and everyone acknowledges it, except for the president , which creates mixed messaging. I wonder why. The Mueller Report finds that an unprecedented level of activity against state elections infrastructure took place by russia in 2016 that accessed maybe two dozen election systems, the voter roll srolls. Since 2000 when people doubted the outcome of the election, the legit massy of it, and 2004, the machines are not networked together so nobody could actually hack into the Voting Machines, they couldnt do that. Thats not the way you could steal an election. What you have written here, theres something called defcon. Explain what that is and what i just said might not be true. Defcon is a gathering from hackers, they come from all over the world, dont bring anything electronic because well hack it if you show up with it and they created a voter village. They take different Voting Machines and other election system items and they try to break into them to show where there are vulnerabilities, and now even the pentagon and many Government Entities actually submit devices for them to dry to break, so they can get a better handle on exactly how vulnerable the software is, the hardware is. Are these systems, are the machines networked together, are they online . Well, there are people that say no, no, theyre not online, but then there were instances found and reported where certain Voting Machines had been online the entire year, as part of programming efforts and then think about even when the votes are in. Right. They have to be tabulated, aggregated and then sent to the election officials, and some people might even say its a closed system. Yes. Theres sometimes you find open wifi ports in closed systems, and theyve seen instances where people have been remotely programming certain Voting Machines because their companies, thats what they do. Lets talk about companies, es s is the Biggest Company that distributes election machines. All of these Companies Want one to believe their systems are perfectly safe. Is there one system that is safer than the others or do they all need to be scrapped in favor of just paper ballots . The truth is there should be testing, continuous testing of all of the these systems all the time, certified all the time. There arent National Just like there is a National Standard when it comes to critical infrastructure, and now voting systems are part of critical infrastructure, but theres never really been an attempt to focus National Standards specifically on Election Security. And lets talk about georgia. We know that in georgia, and this is a story, this is from august, that last years lieutenant governors race may have had a huge undercount in blank precincts. The committee is investigating whether voting machine errors caused a large drop off in votes in the lieutenant governors race, republican jeff duncan won the election by 123,000 votes. The close elections are nervous making. Is there any evidence something was done in that election nefariously . Im not sure that anything was done nefariously. The real issue is the whole question of protecting democracy, protecting democracy in particular in battleground states and in counties that are critical to those battleground states, and the theory is, democracy is all about a peaceful transfer of power between winners and losers. It is more important for the loser of an election to acknowledge they lost fairly, and when you have these questions coming up all the time about the integrity of the voting system, it gives someone who didnt win the election the opportunity to challenge the election, and then get voters all riled up. Yes. And then combine that with all the disinformation campaigns that are being run right now. Yes. And maybe not even just from russia, from other countries around the world. Iran recently was identified as one. Its very possible north korea, since we know they have an ax tow grind, china, they certainly have an axe to grind right now, and again, if you can undermine faith in our elections, youre undermining faith in our democracy, and you are basically rattling people in the United States, which is exactly what these autocratic nations like to do, when they get involved in things occurring in other countries. All right, and do you have confidence that congress is doing enough at this moment, the states are doing enough . I have confidence in two things. One, congress is doing absolutely nothing. You cant get an Election Security bill through. Wonderfully if the president owned a Cyber Security company, whether in fact we would be finally getting the Cyber Security election legislation through, and in terms of the states and the counties, we are seeing a very interesting shift. There are a number of red states where secretaries of state and state election directors are talking a little less about voter i. D. , and a little bit more now about Election Security, because theyve reached the conclusion that we are at a defcon level that is rising and we got to do something about it. Wow. Scary is caring. Where i grew up, i didnt know my father. My father was murdered when i was 3 years old. I never knew him. In a new nbc news series, nightly news anchor lester holt takes an indepth look at the intricacies of americas Justice System. It feet explores new ways of seeking justice. As part of the the serieses holt spent three days and two nights inside the largest maximum security prison in the country, louisianas state penitentiary, known as angola, to get a raw unfiltered look at life behind bars. To give a person a life sentence and then just say look, youre not worthy of rehabilitation, i believe thats where we get it wrong. So youre saying if we take hope out of the equation, thats where we get in equation. If you take hope out of the equation its a lot of trouble. Justice for all continues with a town hall filmed outside a maximum security prison in new york, hosted by lester holt, john legend, former attorney general Loretta Lynch and 25 inmates from the prison. The series is part of a growing effort to examine a criminal Justice System thats made america the country is the highest incarceration rate in the entire world. The prison population is ridden with racial disparities, unjust sentences and high rates of recidivism, which is why criminal Justice Reform has become a key issue in next years president ial election. Many 2020 democrats have already released plans to tackle this issue, including my next guest, joining me is senator and 2020 president ial candidate cory booker, who is coming to us fresh from his speech at the New Hampshire democratic convention, and senator booker, great to talk to you. Great to be back on, joy, thank you. Its a little delayed for those who are watching. You released a criminal justice plan and ill read just a little bit of the elements of it, ending harsh mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent drug offenses, reinstating the right to vote in federal elections for formerly incarcerated individuals, eliminating racially targeted sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine and banning the box, prohibiting federal employers from having job applicants about their criminal history. The holt series is excellent, a lot of people are incarcerated for selling marijuana which a lot of people are getting real rich selling legally in a lot of states. Do you believe that marijuana should be taken off schedule one, where heroin and other more lethal drugs are . When i first got to the senate, i started introducing bills on marijuana and even people my own party thought i was going too far. I have always believed that we should legalize marijuana, because i saw that in my community, i live in a low income black and brown community, people were being arrested and having their lives devastated economically for doing things that two of the last three president s admitted to doing. The war on drugs this marijuana war, there no difference between blacks and whites using or dealing even but africanamericans are almost four times more likely to be convicted of that. The war on drugs has been a war on people, disproportionately poor people, black and brown people, it has to end once and for all and ill continue to lead and fight on this issue. To that point you just made, according to the naacp, 34 of the correctional population in the United States is africanamerican, a country with only 13 of the population in general is africanamerican and africanamericans are incarcerated at a rate five times hher than whites for the exact same crimes even though the use and sale all things are equal but africanamericans get incarcerated more. You promised if you are president of the United States, you promise to grant a Record Number of clemencies for nonviolent drug offenders. Is that specifically targeted to this huge disparity . Marijuana is making colorado people rich, most are white while black people are going to prison for selling the same drug on the street. You know this, joy, and in the senate i fought for years and finally got the First Step Act which my efforts to lead that bill to conclusion and a law liberated thousands of people already, just by correcting the crack cocaine powder cocaine disparity. Liberated over 2,000 people but 90 of them are black, and so we are at a distraught present right now, all who believe in liberty should be angry, because we have more africanamericans now under criminal supervision than all the slaves in 1850. There are thousands that are unjustly incarcerated, and right now, im challenging the rest of the field to use your clemency power, i plan on being the president , but if im not, i want whatever democrat is to use their clemency power to liberate thousands and thousands immediately who are unjustly incarcerated, put them on a path to liberty and freedom and justice. Quickly, i have a panel i want to introduce and bring in because we have folks with questions for you. Republicans wont sign on to Election Security, helping get immigrant kids out of prison, wont seem to sign on to anything, right, and republicans the amount of money that they get from the prison industry is almost eight times what democrats get, 847,000 plus to republicans, 105,000 to democrats. If people are taking money from this industry and essentially benefits financially from locking people up, how do you get republicans to go along with any kind of change . Well look, i got to the senate and Chuck Grassley was on the floor speaking out against the very bills that i wanted to get passed, and i started working across the aisle and before you knew it, he was with me on those pieces of legislation. So i believe in building coalitions. This is not a democrat or republican issue. This is a justice and freedom issue, and plain and simple, we are the incarceration nation of the planet earth. We have 5 4 to 5 of the globes population but one out of every incarcerated women on the earth is in this country, one out of every incarcerated people on the planet earth are in this country. It has to stop. If you believe in liberty, you should be with me. If you believe that government is getting too big, while the prison system has exploded 800 since the 1980s, we should fight back against that. If you believe that we should stop and combat racism, the constitutional racism in our criminal Justice System must be confronted. This is an issue that should unite americans. Ive shown the ability to do that in the senate but as president of the United States, im going to bring this country together to end this national nightmare. We have some magic you can use on republicans to make them agree with that, that would be interesting to see. I want to bring in my panel joining me for the 2020 race, cecile richards, cofounder of the super majority work and elle and maya wiley, you have a question for the senator. Senator, youve been an important voice on criminal Justice Reform and i know you dig into the data and a big part of that data is we dont bring the numbers down without also looking at Violent Crime, so much of the debate has been on nonviolent. What kinds of programs both for prevention and also for reentry would you do, if you were president , on violent offenders . Well first much all, you and i both know but i want to say this very clearly, we have so warped even the understanding of what a Violent Crime is. If im riding with my buddy, he jumps out of the car unbow nens to me, holds somebody up with a gun, jumps back in the car and i ride away with him, i am now considered a violent felon. So we have so expanded and warped that view, so many of the women who are in prison right now because of socalled violent felonies often just caught up in bigger problems that are going on in their families or particularly with their men, so i just believe people are entitled to redemption. Most of the people we send in, whether theyre violent or nonviolent will come back to our communities and thats why what youre asking about entry is important. Ive been fighting on this issue since i was a mayor. We created the first office of reentry in new jersey how you can safely return people to your communities, get them not turn your pack on them but empower them to succeed, and dramatically lower recidivism rates. We need to do things in prison, when we cut pell grants for example for prisoners people say why should we give education money to people in prison . Well, those are going to be some of the best taxpayer dollars you can invest. Every dollar you invest for education in prison lowers your cost for future crimes by about 4. We need to start about Restorative Justice and investing in those evidencebased programs that we know will make us safer but also elevate Human Potential and dignity. Senator, elle has a question for you now. Youve done a good job in your next step program focusing on the other side of criminal Justice Reform, which are people who are not criminals, who are being harassed and brutalized by the cops in this country. I think you have a lot of good ideas about how to bring Police Brutality to heal, but how do you propose to do it from the perch of the presidency, which doesnt have that kind of local control over police, what kind of incentive structures are offering to get local cops to do what you need them to do, to stop brutalizing people like me . Well, i wish that this got a lot more attention, but barack obama pulled together this incredible report 21st century policing. He brought black lives matter people to sit down with Big City Police chiefs, and there are so many incredible recommendations in that report that speak to accountability of local police departments, and talk about the federal levers we have to do that, because remember, as a former mayor, i relied on the federal government to Fund Programs for my police department. We have a lot of leverage, so number one as president im going to use my Justice Department to get back to the business of investigating and helping local police departments. Im the guy that got a lot of support and help from the Justice Department. Number two is im going to be investigating a massive problem in this country, the unjust use of force by police. We need to have a federal government that is activist on that, but then the final thing thats so important, that we start taking those best practices in our country and investing in them from the federal level to get more transparency, more accountability and as i found out as mayoring working with the acwill you can help make us safer. You improve the bonds and the trust between police and communities, and make sure that no one is above the law especially not those people who wear uniforms, you actually help our community become stronger and safer. Theres a big role of the federal government, the only guy only person running in this election that lives in a Community Like mine and sees every day the challenges we have on the local levels, a guy who was growing up as a kid and had his mom and dad sit him down and say to me, the challenges i will have with Police Officers as a guy who has been followed and surveilled, im telling you, i will go into that office with a sense of conviction to get us back to be a nation that has justice in our Justice System at every level especially with policing, and issues of implicit racial bias and accountability. Senator, i have to, as im listening to you, what im thinking about is one of the main challenges we have in this country, in terms of representation, is that the divide in the country is largely not even strictly red state blue state. Its urban rural, so we have a minority rule essentially in this country that sparsely populated states, states that are more rural states that are hyper conservative, even are ruling over the large cities in their states, that dont get to have their way, right, the majority of the country cannot have its way on anything from gun reform, which a vast majority of americans, even most republicans want some reform to being able to carry assault weapons, being able to carry war weapons on the streets of our country, they dont have a choice. They have to live in walmart with people who get to walk through with ar rc15s, walmarts thank god taken steps to stop that. Women having control over their own bodies, the minority says you dont get to have that, on policing, racial disparity, they say nope, youre not allowed to have that. How do we get out of being a country in which a minority of hyper conservative people can decide for the majority of americans that we have to live the way that were living now, including with our children being afraid to go to school . So seeing right now in socalled red states, North Carolina, georgia, texas, the republican parties in those states doing outrageous things to start to restrict voting. In georgia, where they passed that heartbeat bill that was such an offense, even corporations were coming out saying dont do, this over 70 of georgians were against that. Antidemocratic laws being passed because the governor got elected in antidemocratic fashion, beating Stacey Abrams by doing things to undermine the vote and so i do not give in to the premise that georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, texas arent states that will elect democrats to the senate that can change these laws. We can organize, overcome these Voter Suppression efforts, overcome these laws as one federal judge said about a North Carolina law, designed with surgicallike precision to disenfranchise africanamericans. I believe we can fight these battles and turn texas blue, North Carolina, georgia, and many other states. Its a matter of facing this kind of oppression with more activism, more engagement, just like we did people like john lewis and others did during the Civil Rights Movement they knew was a voters Rights Movement and were able to get big victories. We need to get back to that mentality. The the Civil Rights Movement took place with a friendly federal government, a Friendly Department of justice that had a Civil Rights Division that wanted civil rights, wanted to enhance the scitizenship of africanamericans to full status. Now we have the trump government, a different kind of government. Im not sure civil rights activism alone without significant steps, one of the steps people talked about, allowing the majority in this country to rule. Do you think we should get rid of the electoral Electoral College and whoever the wins of majority of votes to become president of the United States . I believe the person with the most votes should win fundamentally. Get rid of the ec, the Electoral College . I think we should do it but look, everybody here knows the difficulties of getting that done. Thats why i want to challenge the premise of the question. When i am president of the United States and we energize to make sure that Mitch Mcconnell is no longer there and when senate 2020 election in North Carolina and South Carolina, the two up in georgia, win in maine, win in colorado, we can take back the United States senate, and so im going to tell you right now, my Justice Department will be going after voter rights violations, go after Voter Suppression efforts. Its not out of our reach through the democratic processes we have right now. I did a rally in milwaukee after the last debates and sat with grassroots milwaukee leaders who told me they had a 70,000 to 80,000 less africanamericans that voted in milwaukee when we lost that state by about 10,000 votes. We have what we need to do. Its not just the vitriolic words and violent actions of the bad people but at pauling silence and inaction of the good people. I think this 2020 election cant just be about one guy in one office. This has to be a movement election and we need Movement Leaders as our nominees that are going to energize our base, excite people to be an aspirational nation again. If we can do that, a lot of these things that seem to difficult right now under trump and Mitch Mcconnell suddenly become possible. Quickly, before i let you no, you have to go back to the convention, there say story in politico weve been reporting on that donald trump is benefiting financially in many ways from his office, including apparently a military transport stopping at his resort in ireland, rather than stopping where they would normally stop. His Vice President paying him to stay at his hotels, his attorney general paying him to stay at his hotels. Should Donald Trumps use of the office one might say abuse of the office to gain financially be an article of impeachment against him . Reporter yes, it should be investigated where we can start impeachment process. There is clearly an emoluments clause in the constitution, our founders did not want a president to be using that office to benefit financially. To me, this is clear, the house should be investigating and we should be starting articles of impeachment, the impeachment process. We cannot let this president continue to violate the ideals of our constitution, including checks and balances. He wont even allow people to be subpoenaed or information collected. He is acting more like an authoritarian leader than leader of the free world. No one is above the law. We should begin impeachment proceedings. Senator cory booker, thank you very much for your time. Appreciate you, and enjoy the convention, sir. Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Our panelists still with us. Thoughts . I mean, theres a lot going on here. Cecile, what do you think . Im so glad cory booker is in this race. I think hes raisingish eye ii that needed to be raised and this is about our democracy and who is in office and whether it is representative and thats one of the reasons that we launched super majority this spring along with alicia garza from black lives matter, and others. Women and women of color are leading the way, in this country, as voters, as activists, increasingly as candidates, and i think that next fall we will see the largest turnout of women ever in our history as voters, and theyre going to determine the future of this country. I want to ask you about the great state of texas. Yes. Obviously a legend in that state, it used to be clearly winnable by democrats at the statewide level. It could happen. Its not impossible. Right. Is it possible now, because you have this combination of outrage over whats happening in immigration, donald trump saying take the land, which would mean a lot of texas ranchers would have their lands seized to build his wall and now stealing money from the military in order to put that toward the wall mexico was supposed to pay for. Is texas in play . I think texas is absolutely in play and i was glad senator booker mentioned it. Its fascinating what we saw in the last election in 2018 was a record turnout, just surpassed everything, and it was really led by women, by people of color, by young people. Right now john cornyn, a very weak candidate for reelection as United States senator, there are four women running in the democratic primary to try to defeat him. You look at all the congressional races in texas, where we have, where its a competitive race, women are in all of those races and so it is to me whats happening in texas, it is a microcosm of what were seeing across the country, which is women, people of color, young people saying i want to get off the sidelines, put me in. I want to be part of changing whats happening in this country. I have a couple questions on this, one of them is im glad that you mentioned the women who are running on to defeat john cornyn. What tends to happen in the Democratic Party, they get their sights fixated on one person, that is the person who can win this race. Right now, the eye of soron is on beto orourke. Only beto. He is amazing, in his advocacy of gun reform, i dont think anyone is better other than the parkling kids, but is it possible the party needs to expand its vision in georgia . Theyre up in arms because Stacey Abrams does not want to be a senator and shes made that clear. If she doesnt run were doomed. Great candidates running for senate there, teresa tomlinson, wonderful candidate known in the state. There are other people. Is the party too narrowly fixated . Yes. Thats yes. Cecile already made the point and in particularly when we look at what weve seen since the 2016 president ial election, the truth is black women in particular and women in general have always been the foot soldiers of the Democratic Party without being allowed to be the frontrunners, the leaders of the party, and one of the things that the party is struggling with is how do you build a bench . The republicans have done this better, quite frankly, is looking locally, building, investing in and Building Local elected leadership, starting from school boards, and building up to state legislators and then legislatures and building beyond, and traditionally, with the exception of obviously howard dean with the 50 state strategy, trying to move the party to think more wholistically at the state level, never really jumping in and doing it, wanting the bright shiny object and the bright shiny object too often doesnt look like us. Yes. I think of scott walker in that sense. Scott walker came up from being a city official and they groomed him up to governor. It can really be done. I wonder if you think, you know, elle, that the 2020 is not i really think we think so clearly in red and blue and texas is a good example of it. Inside every red state is a blue city. Umhum. Phoenix in arizona, you have atlanta in georgia, and these voters intend to get completely ignored because theyre in a red state. Yes. Look, we i think youre absolutely right that there is an urban rural divide and cory booker was absolutely right that the way to overcome that is by having a truly inspirational aspirational candidate. Thats what hes running to be. How could you not like him after you listen to him . Hes a forwardlooking guy. Hes a new jersey like a bon jovi song. Take my hand and well make it i swear hes great, right . The issue is that there are other candidates ahead of him in the polls who are offering a little bit more grit, a little bit more of the subversiveness. If hes bon jovi, warren and sanders are all on bruce springsteen, right . Nowhere to run and nowhere to go i was born in the usa so like we have to decide, do we want the bon jovi song or do we want the springsteen song. Yes. Thats kind of how this election is going to roll. Thats not fair. Bruce springsteen is everything, im sorry. Im sorry, thats not fair. We love bon jovi, too, but come on, bruce you did win my heart with this. Race, not just rural. Its Rural Communities of color are not voting. Thats exactly right, theyre not registered to vote. The rate of incarceration in this country, you have to look at the numberses and understand this isnt working. What happens after you lock them up . Do they deserve to be locked up . Are we disproportionately putting one group beyond another . The country is in trouble. This is a crisis. The 2020 election cant just be about one guy and one office. This has to be a movement election and we need movement and leaders, Movement Leaders as our nominees that will energize our base, incite people to be an aspirational nation again. If we can do that, a lot of the seems that seem to difficult under trump and Mitch Mcconnell suddenly become possible. I spoke with 2020 candidate senator cory booker moments ago, he along with practically every democrat running for president is in New Hampshire this morning, vying for support at the states Democratic Party convention. My panel is back with me. We were talking in the break, that is inspirational, when you hear cory booker he is an inspirational speaker, that is very clear but the challenge is, hes running on this idea of inspiration. I agree we need a movement in this country, clearly. We need a movement thats going to register voters, reimpose the Voting Rights act. We need people to vote but the question is whether or not a lovebased campaign can work at a time people want to fight. Fight for something important. And you can do a little bit of both, but you do have to have a hard edgy think in this particularly democratic primary on justice, and one of the, his strengths as he said in your interview is his record on justice, and certainly he has a history that he could be pulling forward, to talk about both who is he and why he will get done a lot of justice, but think about the detroit debates, right . It was Marion Williamson who was like the leading edge of talking about race in america, not cory booker. Thats the kind of thing that he has to correct, because black millenials who should be a base for someone like him both with his background and speaking as he does and as well as he does on Critical Issues like criminal Justice Reform, but theyre not. And let me say the other person in the same lane as cory booker, pete buttigieg, sort of running an Election Campaign saying we need to bring the country together. Here is the latest ad from pete buttigieg. As a veteran, and as a mayor, ive seen what we can achieve when we have each others backs but in todays divided america, were at each others throats. Our rivers and oceans are rising, Health Care Costs are soaring, and our kids are learning active shooter drills before they learn to read. To meet these challenges, and to defeat this president , we need real solutions, not more polarization. So he reminds me of barack obama honestly in 2008, so does cory booker. I wonder if that message, which is really positive and very compelling works now and people are terrified of the other, of what republicans have become and what theyre doing to the country. I think women are absolutely terrified, that is why were seeing a Record Number of women not only running for office but getting involved in politics and saying they have never knocked on a door, theyve never registered voters but thats what they want to do. I think that the other piece thats kind of missing to me and one is that women in this country are economically stressed in a way that is just frankly not being reflected in some of the debates. I mean, these are women who now are almost a majority of the workforce. They cant afford child care. Theyre taking care of their parents, in addition to holding down one or two jobs and the system isnt working for them. I think theyre responding to people saying we see you and that is the whole idea of super majority, to say women in this country are going to be the majority of voters and we want to make sure theyre taking their issues seriously. What are they saying, what do they want . What is their one, two, three list of what they want democrats to say . I dont think its what they want democrats to say. I think they actually and its interesting, one thing pete said is probably right is that women actually want people who are going to solve problems. Women are very practical. All this idealistic stuff is great but honestly theyre saying i got to keep my kids in school, i got to hold down my job. I got to keep all this stuff together, and i think, and were kicking this up best tour with Stacey Abrams a week from sunday in georgia across the country. The other piece they understand, they have kept out of the political system and what you said, maya, is right, theyve been the foot soldiers but where are the issues they care about and responding to candidates who are saying i see you and im actually listening to you. Go on. I think trying to roll back the Barack Obama Campaign is a problem that both booker and buttigieg will have. You look at owe ba marx st. Obama to me, what he represented was what this country could be. He was what we wanted to see ourselves as, eloquent and erudite and decent and trump shows us what we are, trash, mean, hateful, resentful. Trump shows us what we are, and i think in this election what the democrats want is somebody who is going to meet what we are head on with no fear, with no illusions and fight what we are. I think there are a lot of democrats who are sick of going high and want to go for the jugular. That is an important point. The thing is that donald trump has shown the cruelty can win. Yes. That mean can win. It doesnt win a majority, because as i think youre appropriately naming, the people who think that putting a child in a cage and not giving them food and making them drink their soup off the floor if they spill it, the super majority of americans think that is vile. They think what this administration is doing on immigration is vile and repugnant. Most americans didnt want torture during the iraq, most americans think this stuff is horrible, okay, but the problem is we have minority rule. Read south africas history, this is minority rule. I think and i was going to challenge you a little bit on that, that elie, because 3 million more people voted for Hillary Clinton than donald trump, which goes back to the point that youre making, joy, so the question is, not how do democrats go low, its how to democrats go for power. I agree. One of the things that cory booker said is, movement he also talked about how he would use the Justice Department. I think what he has not said, and this is maybe something you dont actually say out loud on the campaign trail, but i think democrats want to hear it, to your point, joy, how are you going to get Us Democratic power. Thats right. Its not just using the tools of the administrativadministrat executive branch. Its not just how you use your Justice Department, its are you fighting for labor unions . How are you fighting for them . So that theres actually a base that has some political power . Are you going to, what are you going to do about corruption and how will you use your power of the presidency to deal with the apparatus of funding and citizens united. What are we doing to think about how we take back the courts . Because those are this also goes to how youre going to use your power to break the power. He didnt talk about killing the filibuster, didnt talk about packing the courts. I agree. One thing is really important is that we have to expand the electorate and thats something that if you look at the race in florida, beto and Stacey Abrams. We play the same game in the same envelope well get the same result and to agree with your point, we need folks who are looking at how do we bring in people who have never been part of the political process before, that to me is how were going to change what happens in 2020. The Trump Administration is considering yet another attempt to drastically limit the number of refugees entering the United States. According to the New York Times one option top officials are weighing would cut admissions by half or more to 10,000 to 15,000 people. Another option would reduce refugee admissions to zero while leaving the president with the ability to admit some in an emergency. Steven miller has used his influence in the west wing to limit the amount of refugees entering the country, capping the program nearly 30,000 this year, one of the lowest levels in history. Each of these military Construction Projects was recommended by the administration, passed by both the senate and the house, signed in to law by the president , and while there is some discretion that he has to move money around, i think that his executive order exceeds his discretion. Well, looks like Susan Collins is disappointed again. She and other republicans are discovering that their utter loyalty and utter obedience to donald trump will do absolutely nothing to stop him from stealing money out of their states, even at a fema Emergency Management and the military to build the precious, the border wall, that mexico was supposed to pay for. This time, the man who sold america has decreed his administration will take more than 3. 5 billion, with a b dollars out of military projects, including money that was supposed to pay for power plants, schools and military bases, environmental cleanups and more, a total of 127 projects put on hold so trump can use that money to make american taxpayers, that means you, pay for his wall. Youre welcome. Many of these military projects are in states and districts represented by republicans. Few of them have the guts to speak up for their own constituents, that would mean challenging the president , they dont dare do that. Arizona freshman senator march that mcsally downplayed the effect in her state claiming trump was taking a mere 30,000 before conceding the amount hes taking is 30 million, million dollars. Joining me is msnbc contributor malcolm nance, eli mystal. Malcolm. Million dollars. Million dollars. Its only 30 million. Lets talk about this for a moment. Yes. One of the projects thats going away is ft. Campbell middle school, because donald trump needs the precious. Right. The pentagons diversion to 62 million means that 552 students whose parents are serving this country in sixth, seventh and eighth grade will continue to cram themselves 30 to a classroom in some cases at the bases aging middle school. Teachers use mobile carts to store books, lesson plans and homework assignments because theres not enough classroom space. The cafeteria is not big enough to seat everyone, some students will continue to eat in the library. Is that worth it for a military family . Let me ask you quickly what your military teacher at this school, from the New York Times, most of our students dont know what its like to live in a World Without war. When you dont have to worry about mom and dad being killed, said jane loggins a ft. Campbell teacher director of the federal education and statewide region. She says the one big benefit of this school is that we try to support all those emotional needs. They dont get their money. Let me tell you ill speak as someone literally born on a military base, raised my entire life in military housing, and military schools, and then went on to raise a family who also lived in military housing. Donald trump seems to really hate military families, and i mean that with all seriousness. He thinks that theyre some sort of adjunct and can be shuffled off to private schools. That quote that you made about these children on military installations, whose fathers and mothers are war fighters, who could at any time in training or combat be killed, maimed or injured, the military School System is their only family. Theyre not military dependents. These people are part of the armed forces. The funny thing is, when people will come up and say to me thank you for your service, i always say this, thank my mom, my wife, and my kids. Theyre the ones who are back here on these bases supporting the war fighter, and they think that 30 million from a school is worthless, shuffle them off to some public school. That is where the compact between enlistment oath of the armed forces and donald trump stealing their money which was allocated by congress, that compact is broken. They will follow orders, they will take that money, but people are going to look sideways at donald trump for the scrooge that he is or the henry potter that hes turning their military bases into. The reverse robin hood. It is. Hes taking the money from the childrens schools, from kids who parents could at any moment be killed in combat and the kids have to deal with it, take their money and give it to probably a private contractor thats probably a friend. A private contractor he is insisting gets a sole source contract for building this wall. Correct. Which is illegal and criminal. The corruption is open but its not fair to limit the focus on donald trump, because these children and their parents have a senator, his name is Mitch Mcconnell, some might call him moscow mitch. He doesnt like that, but thats okay. He doesnt have to like everything. You dont get to like everything. Mitch mcconnell, whose home state of kentucky will be hit by the funding shuffle to the tune of nearly 63 million, recently talked to a reporter regarding the issue and says he is committed to protecting the funding for the ft. Campbell middle school project. How is he going to do that . This is not just all trump. This is the Republican Party and i think the only good thing that will come out of the Trump Administration is that i will no longer have to hear for the rest of my natural life the republicans care about the military, because they dont and its always been a lie, they never cared and now this is the proof that the Republican Party, not the democrats, not chuck schumer, its the Republican Party that does not care about the military, they think theyre toys, they think theyre pawns to be moved around a global chess board. I hope their media is listening, because im not going to hear it again, im never going to hear it again. Im never going to have to hear again this lie that republicans care because they dont, and this is the proof. One of the things that is so frustrating sometimes in our business, you have this constant question, i wonderdemocrats are moving too far to the left. I wonderdemocrats are doing enough to get to the middle. I wonderdemocrats are doing enough. Theyre moving too far to the left. Lets talk about the republicans for a moment. Are they moving too far to the right, when this set of senators, were going to put them up here, name some more names. They supported Donald Trumps emergency decdeclaration. This is the vehicle hes using to steal the money out of these states, red states with military families and to take their money. Lets be clear taking the money away from the families, from the School Districts and from these military families to give it to a private contractor of his choice, probably a friend, likely a friend of a senator, somebody he likes, to give them the money so he can build the precious which you cant build because theres a river in the way of the wall. Bill cassidy of louisiana, john cornyn of texas, cory gardner for now of colorado, until hes defeated likely in tough shape, lindsey graham, his best friend from South Carolina, Cindy Hyde Smith of mississippi, jaimes imhoff of oklahoma, Mitch Mcconnell of kentucky, martha mcsally, and all up for reelection this year and theyre losing their money to the precious. So two things. One that we should remember is donald trump apparently also promised pardons to people who broke the law to help him get a wall built that he himself admitted to lawmakers was not the best way to address border crossing. Can i add one thing, he promised in broking the law taking the land, to use the frand phrase take the land. Meaning violate peoples Constitutional Rights of due process. Correct. I just wanted to say that, because i think its important to understand, this is also about of course white house said oh he was just joking. We saw that kind of joking happening in context of you know, conversations around lots of things with donald trump, but the point is, he knows that this wall is not actually going to be very effective. If you remember the way this came into his campaign was as a tactic, not as a real policy proposal. A mnemonic qudevice. Republicans didnt want or support the wall because they recognized that. This is beyond crass. This is even beyond corrupt, because its also about potentially inciting criminality, and we shouldnt forget that, but part of what i think is happening politically is that republicans are saying weve got a stop gap measure we have to vote on october. Were going to push to backfill the projects politically, and then blame the democrats if they dont help these projects get backfilled. Thats the plot. Let me come to you, this administration the pentagon is claiming the projects are either delayed or deferred but the reality is Congress Must approve them before they can move forward. This is the pentagon backfilling for trump. So many agencies debase themselves, generals, people in the military, people at the noaa, everyones willing to debase themselves to cover this man. Why is the military willing, not just on this, but on him landing planes near his resort and making everyone pay to stay at his resorts around the world . Why are they willing to do this . The military is supposed to be the one uncorruptible institution. Why are they doing it . Not always. The uniformed personnel of the Armed Forces General are i apolitical, and what you find is, what youll find it was a squad ron commander doing this on his own or from civilian authorities in the department of the secretary of the air force office, and the secretary of Defense Office trying to curry favor with the white house. Maybe theres a memo that we dont know about between the white house and the secretary of defense saying hey, if youre up there in scotland, stay at the facilities. Ultimately do you believe, having served in this institution ultimately the military will not allow itself to be drawn in to this absolutely open corruption . The chairman of the joint chiefs of staff and the joint uniform Services Officers wont and they will send the igs down to find out who the individuals are that ordered this, or who allowed it. Theyll do that, but at the secretary of defense civilian level, i dont trust them at all. This is depressing, one of the most depressing eras, parts of this already present era. Moll cam nance, eli and maya, thank you. The modern day monosradamus will be here to cheer you up, thats next. Donald trump is trying to eliminate elections. He wants to eliminate primary elections right now in four states, arizona, nevada, South Carolina and kansas. That is undemocratic b. S. , its wrong, and thats the kind of thing that should piss off republican voters. I think theyre scared to death of this president having any other name on a primary ballot against him because hes imploding day by day. I think theyre afraid. We are just under 13 months out from the 2020 elections and one thing is becoming increasingly clear. The Republican Party is the party of donald trump full stop. Despite only having a 39 Approval Rating in the latest gallup poll, donald trump enjoys a massive 88 Approval Rating among republicans. Yet for some reena cording to a new report in politico, the republican parties in four states, South Carolina, nevada, arizona and kansas will cancel their caucus. Joining me is rachel bittekoffer. We are calling you our very own nose stnostradamus. Does it make sense to you that republican parties in these states would not want to have any primary challengers get any oxygen . Yes. I mean, this is actually, its getting Media Attention now, but there has been a longstanding process going on behind the scenes within these state parties to shore up trumps primary support and to ensure, i mean, just no matter what happened that he would be, you know, unchallengeable. This is now coming to light in a big way with these big, you know, announcements but, yeah, they know for sure its a bad optic for them to run a primary and have him even lose 10 or 15 even though obviously those percentages are not enough to sway the nomination. The media would go crazy with those kinds of narratives. It would affect the fundraising. So what theyre trying to do here is control the narrative. And ive heard some analysts say, well, its not uncommon for incumbent parties to cancel their primaries to save money. That is true, but they dont tend to do that when there are named challengers. That is extremely an uncommon move and it certainly is something thats going to get a lot of controversy. Bill welch is running the best, donald trump by terms arrogant and paranoid has made no secret that he wants to be crowned and not elected. One of the challenges that i think people have is we are moving towards autocracy and donald trump wants to be king with Congress Unable to supervise him, unable to exercise its powers as an equal branch of government, absolutely king. So that is a challenge. Is the fear of that in your Data Analysis enough for democrats to come out in big enough numbers to overcome what is likely to be a no so clean election . It is, but, you know, im also making the assumption that democrats are also going to tap into that and reinforce and remind the electorate because there is value. Theres not often where you have material that could be used to motivate both what we would call persuasion bucket voters, independents and Democratic Base voters but this is one issue that definitely could, right . We have him trampling institutional norms, coming down on congress and saying, look, you have no subpoena power. Im not going to produce any witnesses. So theres so many institutional norms that democrats where they make a mistake is assuming everybody is aware of it. Again, most people, most americans, including the ones that are going to cast ballots in that november election are not following the day to day of donald trump and so this assumption that Everybody Knows is a totally wrong assumption for democrats to make. They will need to remind the electorate of these institutional norms that trump has questioned and violated or it will be a massive strategic mistake. Very quickly we have a democratic debate coming up next week. Do you think it will change anything, particularly since we have Elizabeth Warren and joe biden on the stage at the same time . No. I dont think anything is going to change. Regardless of the nominee. Certainly theyre going to have a tone and temperament difference but i would think democrats are wise enough to understand. One of the mistakes they made in 2016 was an unbalanced ticket in terms of the ideological balance of the ticket. They put forward two white centrists, okay . Yes, there was a female on the ticket. That particular female had complications that would not extend to an average, you know, generic female nominee so i would expect that if its, you know, biden, then youre going to see a progressive person of color, female, some type of balance on that ticket and vice versa. If its a nominee from the progressive wing you will see a more moderate vp but well see a balanced ticket. Rachel, one of the best at this. We love talking to you. Thank you. Come back often.
