The white house across the south lawn to the marine one hospital, which transported him to Walter Reed Medical Center for treatment of his Coronavirus Infection. The white house says he is expected to remain hospitalized for the next few days on the advice of doctors. Put simply, i think its fair to say its been a stunning 24 hours, as stunning as any in the trump error. Around this time last night we learned the president s aide hope hicks tested positive for the virus. The president and first lady were then tested and in a 1 a. M. Tweet the president announced they were both positive. After that tweet we heard nothing from the president , nothing on twitter. We did not see him until he left the white house to board marine one for walter reed. There was no medical information, no medical briefing from white House Doctors or anything released for more than 12 hours and then during that time we got word a bunch of other people in the president s orbit tested positive as well. Two people were at the white house on saturday for the formal nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the sproupreme court. Mike lee, hugging people and no one with masks and the reverend john jenkins, the president of notre dame, both among the tightly packed crowd in the rose garden. Three journalists who work at the white house, thats their workplace, they dont have control over the policiepolicie also tested positive, along with a staffer who sits in the lower pressed area of the west wing. The Republican National Committee Chairwoman tested positive this week, she was last with the president on friday. And the city of cleveland announced 11 people tested positive in getting ready for the president ial debates. There are now urgent efforts to contact those who came in contact with the president of the United States. Joe biden and jill were tested and both are negative. Speaker of the house nancy pelosi was tested it after meeting with the president s treasury secretary earlier this week. She is also negative. Another big area of concern is the president s trip to his bedminister, new Jersey Golf Club yesterday for a fundraiser. He carried on with that trip as planned despite knowing that morning that hope hicks had tested positive and had been in close contact with him and the president at that event came in contact with donors as well as the staff of bedminister. So as the magnitude of this cluster started to become clear today, the president was out of sight. We did not have official word on his condition until Late Afternoon when his physician released this state revealing the president received a dose of the regeneron monoclone al, a worrisome sign. Just about an hour after that the white house announced the president would be hospitalized. They released this brief video statement shortly after the president walked over and took off in marine one. I want to thank everybody for the tremendous support. Im going to Walter Reed Hospital. I think im doing very well, but were going to make sure that things work out. The first lady is doing very well. So thank you very much, i appreciate it. I will never forget it. Thank you. Donald trump is 74 years old. That is in a relatively highrisk category for this virus and we dont actually have much reliable information about the president s overall health. We dont know the extent of the white house cluster. The country is in a state of deep crisis. We are just 32 days away from an election. Joe biden offered his prayers to the president this afternoon. Look, lets id like to start by acknowledging, which im sure all of you do as well, sending my prayers for the health and safety of the first lady and president of the United States after they tested positive for covid19. My wife jill and i pray that he make a full and quick recovery. This is not a matter of politics. Its a bracing reminder to all of us that we have to take this virus seriously. Nearly 50,000 americans tested positive just today. 30,000 plus, including the president , are going to spend tonight in a hospital. Most of them are isolated from family and from loved ones, many of them and perhaps the president himself feeling nervous and alone and scared. And, yes, as joe biden said, we have to take this virus seriously. Im going to turn to one of the best informed people i know about this virus, who it works in the human body, the dean of the National School of tropical medicine at Baylor College of medicine. Doctor, it good to have you on. Ill just start with your assessment based on the publicly available information, the actions taken by the white house and the Statement Released by the president s doctor of how we should understand the president s condition. Yeah, chris, you know ive been saying all day today that, look, hes 74 years old, hes a man, which also puts him at greater risk for severe illness or even death. So between age and sex and then you get into the fact that hes overweight, he may have underlying chronic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension, i dont know that but thats a possibility. When you add all that up, that puts him into one of the very high risk groups, potentially mortality rates of 5 to 12 . So on that basis ive been very worried about the president s health. The fact that hes been having fevers made me feel strongly he needed to be monitored in a hospital setting because patients can decompensate very quickly, have very low levels of oxygen. The white house clearly does not have that capacity to do that intensive level of monitoring. Things can decompensate very quickly. That and the fact that i felt he needed some specific treatments and i think the Monoclonal Antibody was the way to go, a new treatment. All that added up to the fact that i said repeatedly that he need to be the Walter Reed Medical Center where he can respond and finally the white house came to that conclusion as well. And also not to do it in the middle of the night, do it in a time where theres a lot of people around and do it in a controlled setting. Back when i used to admit patients to hospital settings, you want to do it when full staff was there and you can make plans and create a patient plan. In that sense the white house medical staff made all the right chess moves today and i hope the president does well. When you talked about regeneron, this experimental ant b body antibody treatment, this has not been approved for fda use, even emergency use, we dont have a great sense of what the treatment protocols are as a sort of prophylactic but whats your sense of why they would use that treatment . Ive been working on coronavirus and other path generals now for ten years, specifically to coronaviruses and weve developed coronavirus vaccines and one of the most important things can you do to have a successful outcome with a Coronavirus Infection is to have high levels of whats call virus neutralizing antibody, it binds to the spine protein and prevents it from binding to the host tissues. One way to do that is by vaccine and thats how our vaccines have worked. After you administer the vaccine, it takes about two weeks. And clearly that would not be that takes too long for Something Like this. The other way is to artificially give the antibodies either through high titres of plasma but the advantage of the cocktail is its a much better deer find product, it targets that protein of the virus and you can control the dose much better. Theres two experimental Monoclonal Antibody cocktails, one out of regeneron, the other out of lily could suffice. Knowing all of that, i think it was a good call. If it was me and getting sick and going to the hospital, i would want for either myself or my family to get that kind of Monoclonal Antibody cocktail, even though it is still early on in clinical development. I cant help but notice as we show this v. O. Of the president folks are Wearing Masks around him but it strikes me you would want to take some very serious precautions if youre traveling with the president , the president is in a mask, which he normally is not. Hes wearing one right now, he has covid. I guess my question to you is does that strike you as well . Theres a real Public Safety issue with the white house right now and with the people that work around the president. Well, the frustration that a number of us have from the scientific and medical community all year is the fact that theres been kind of this defines about Wearing Masks and all too often we saw events around the president where individuals were not Wearing Masks and it was almost as though they were doing this out of showing some for the of political allegiance, which made absolutely no sense. Without having a vaccine, fighting this epidemic is Like Fighting it with one hand tied behind your back. All you really have for a Public Health measure are masks and Contact Tracing. If you take that away, basically youre not doing anything. So its so exasperating to see event after event where people were not Wearing Masks knowing they were being set up to potentially become very sick or even worse. Maybe now there will be some kind of safe change ea change i white house conducts business. Even if youre doing a lot of testing, this virus is so highly contagious, especially for individuals between the ages of 20 and 44. There was a big study coming out of india this week published in Science Magazine by my colleague. You have to wear masks. Its a little too little too late but maybe now theyll get the message. There was some news today that seven months into the pandemic, the white house has issued a mask mandate for those working in the white house. Thank you for carving out a little time for us on this very, very busy day. Thanks, chris. Thanks for giving all the attention to this issue. Here with me now, two veteran reporters who understand the ins and outs of the white house, Geoff Bennett and jeff mason, traveling in delaware with the biden campaign. Geoff bennett, i will start with you. We should say that the without is the peoples house, its where the president lives and works and it is a workplace for many people, yourself included. There are white house staff, there are people that work in the kitchen. That give us what you have learned about what efforts are being made to run down the tracing chains here so that they can ensure people are tested and safe. Well, the white house, chris, says that they are in the process of what has to be a herculean effort to Contact Trace the great many people with whom President Donald Trump has been in contact this past week starting on saturday in the rose garden when he announced Amy Coney Barrett as his choice to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court. You see row upon row of trump supporter and elected republican on the south lawn shaking hands, hugging each other, no social distancing, no mask wearing. And that continued straight up until thursday night when the president had that private fundraiser in bedminister. So what you see is his own reckless approach to this disease ripley kaeplicated on t wing, on the campaign trail, the president having put at risk people who work for him, who support him, People Like Us who cover him and then the people who protect him. In your conversation with dr. Hotez, i was watching the secret Service Agents who only had an n95 mask as president had a cotton mask. President donald trump facing the most serious threat facing a sitting president since the nonlett at shootinon nonlethal shooting of president reagan. And it was all avoidable. Now 1. 3 million americans battling this along with him. Jeff mason, you have served the association putting out word that three members of the White House Press corps have tested positive. They dont make the rules for what the policies are. I want to play this exchange youve had with the president that indicate the tensions that have been in that workplace around safety procedures when you asked him a question. I want to play this clip and get you to sort of describe what the situation has been there policywise. Take a listen. Youre going to have to take that off, please. How many feet are you away . Reporter ill speak a lot louder. If you dont take it off, youre very muffled. Reporter im just speak a lot louder is that better . Its better, yeah. Its better. That was a notable moment for me, jeff mason. I wonder do you feel there have been adequate precautions in the white house . And have you felt pressure to not comply with cdc representations like mask wearing . The answer to your first question is no, chris. There have definitely not been adequate precautions and thats one reason why i think we can say completely neutrally that the white house is in the position that it is in today. If everyone in the white house staff had been Wearing Masks, had been paying attention to social distancing measures that the cdc and other members of the White House Task force had been recommending, then no doubt it would have helped the situation. As far as pressure is concerned, you can sort of answer that question by watching the president in that clip that you played and in another moment that he had with me earlier during the pandemic. I think the point of that is more than its illustrative of an ethos that the president set with his staff and more generally with his supporters, suggesting, for whatever reason, that not wearing a mask or that wearing a mask, rather, was not macho or not cool or just not encouraging it or set an example. As a result it has become a very political thing, and unfortunately led, at least in part, to the situation that the white house finds itself in now. I should note we just got some breaking news. A statement put out, Geoff Bennett, by incumbent republican North Carolina senator thom tillis, who is also up for election, that he has tested positive. We believe that he was also at that event again on the south lawn, the event in celebration of Amy Coney Barrett. Theres additional reporting that there were indoor events around that day, indoor receptio receptions, people going around. This is now two United States senators. And thom tillis is not a young man. There are serious repercussions that continue to emanate out here. Thats right. And we should say the trump staffers and Trump Officials today who tested negative and they almost sort of touted their negative diagnosis, thats a snapshot in time. Its a good indicator but its not a final indicator. What we know is that these folks who were in close proximity, either at the vent that preceded that rose garden event for judge amy cohen barrett, theyre going to have to get tested day after day after day. Cdc guidelines would be quarantine for people extended for exposed for an extended period of time. And you were on the bus with the Vice President and his wife announcing they tested negative. What is the perspective from that campaign right now . If is interesting for somebody who is normally hanging out with my friend and colleague, Geoff Bennett, at the white house, its a much different ethos to bring in the word and the conversation we were having earlier. People do wear masks, both in the press corps, which we do at the white house but also amongst the staff, the candidate of course, Vice President biden, former Vice President biden wearing a mask when he got on his plane, when he got off the plane, when he held his event. So there is a much different sort of general attitude about mask wearing and of course that ties in with the overall criticism that Vice President biden has directed at President Donald Trump with regard to his response to the coronavirus pandemic. He did, of course, have more generous words today for the current president and the first lady, saying that he and his wife, jill, were praying for them and wishing them a speedy recovery, but there was also an undercurrent in his remarks in michigan which we just came from, in which he said mask wearing is not about being macho or not macho, its about following the science and it underscores the test that the president announced today that he was positive, underscores how important it is to take this virus seriously. All right. Geoff bennett, jeff mason, two fantastic reporters on that white house beat. Thank you both for sharing your reporting tonight. I really appreciate it. Sure. Thank you. Joining me now, congressman hakeem jeffries, chair of the House Democratic caucus, which puts him fifth in line in the House Democratic leadership. Congressman, first, i want to gauge your reaction and the reaction of your colleagues to this news and how its being processed on capitol hill and among democratic leadership. Well, our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the president , the first lady and in fact every single american who has been infected by the coronavirus and is struggling to battle this deadly disease. It underscores the point that covid19 can touch anyone, whether youre black or white or latino or asian or native american. It doesnt matter whether youre a democrat or republican. It doesnt matter whether youre an every day american or the president of the United States, it doesnt matter, which is why we need to continue to do everything humanly possible to crush this virus. The speaker of the house, nancy pelosi, testing negative today. Shes been in negotiations with treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin about a possible rescue package. Im going to ask you about that in a moment. But there was a notable reporter today that the speaker has not heard anything from the white house one way or the other. There is some continuity of government questions before us and no one wants to talk about the worst case scenario, and nobody wants to morbidly linger on them but there are contingencies for a reason, the speaker of the house of course being the third in line to the presidency after the Vice President. This is a brutal and contagious disease. Are there conversations being had about the contingencies about the continuity and for the government and how we make sure if the absolute worst things happen that things are taken care of . Well, there havent been any conversations that ive been party to, but i think its a positive development that the Vice President has tested negative. Of course that the speaker has tested negative and that joe biden has tested negative, notwithstanding the fact that he was on the same stage with donald trump a few days ago. But transparency is going to be important as it relates to the president s health and well being and his condition moving forward. It in the best interest of the presidency of our republic, of the American People, that the white house provide us with a level of information that they are not accustomed to providing and that it be accurate. Now is not the time to play politic political games or to try to project some level of manliness that has gotten us into the situation we are in right now. The Trump Administration is a toxic combination of arrogance and ignorance and hopefully they can see past that dynamic in this moment of crisis right now. You talk about this moment of crisis. We have layered crises the country is in. The president of the United States is currently at this moment hospitalized. We are hoping for a speedy recovery. He was able to work to the helicopter under his own power, which is a good sign. There are 50,000 new coronavirus cases today, 30,000 americans are hospitalized and 800 more died today and today we got a jobs report that showed unmistakably the recovery from the nadir from the sort of plunge from the coronavirus shutdown, that that recovery has slowed, were still 10 million jobs below where we were and a lot of people leaving the labor force. What is the proper policy response to the fact that there is a lot of pain and a lot of economic misery out there and todays jobs numbers highlighted that . This is a kshaped recovery, to the extent that there is a recovery in that the rich have gotten richer over the last several months and every day americans, middle class americans, the poor, the sick and the afflicted, continue to suffer. Thats why they acted with a 2. 2 trillion heroes package to continue government and provide Necessary Services to the American People, authorized direct stimulus payments, set aside assistance to tenants struggling, increased food assistance, 10 billion for testing and tracing to deal with the Health Aspects of this pandemic and its shocking that our republican colleagues continue to act like it business as usual and nothing is wrong. We are urging them to come to the negotiating table in a serious way so we can enact a meaningful and transformative response that is justified by the circumstances that we are in right now. I want you to respond to an argument ive heard from some republican staffs are on the hill and others that at this point that democrats dont actually want a deal, they want to look like they want a deal but dont actually want one, that when the white house or secretary mnuchin comes up from the number they had before, nancy pelosi or the house leadership is finding ways to scotch that. What do you say . We passed an initial act over 130 or so days ago, aa 3. 4 trillion package. We knew Economic Conditions werent getting better, they were only getting worse. Weve come down from that offer in good faith, as the speaker has indicated, and she continues to express a desire to find common ground. Its shocking that in the midst of a recession where in some parts of the country there are depressionlike conditions and all the pain and suffering and death be experienced by the American People they continue to find different ways to disagree with our willingness to meet them half wave. At some point they should just take yes for an answer, do something meaningful for the American People and we can find ourselves in a better circumstance. Having covered this closely and contacted by people, the biggest obstacle is that Mitch Mcconnell and the white house cant get on the same page to negotiate, which is we we are here amidst all this suffering with nothing passed so far. Thank you, hakeem jeffries, for making time today. Thank you, chris. Coming up, there are a lot of questions right now, not just about the health of the president but what it means for the country. Jay johnson is here to talk about that next. Y johnson is he about that next. Still a father. But now a friend. Still an electric car. Just more electrifying. Still a night out. We dont know all that much about the president s condition right now. The president is at Walter Reed Hospital but the white house has not been particularly forthcoming about his symptoms or vitals, other than to say this afternoon that they are, quote, mild, a fever, fatigue. He is hospitalized now. The president left saying he thinks he is doing well but he was being hospitalized to make sure things all work out. The lack of clarity around it already adds to what is an incredibly uncertain, volatile moment between the ongoing destruction of the pandemic, 10 Million People out of a job, the efforts to undermine the legitimacy of the leelection by his party. Im joined by the former u. S. Secretary of Homeland Security under president obama, jeh johnson. Everyone is hoping the president a speedy recovery, as well as all of the people who may have been exposed in that cluster, including members of the staff at bedminister. Are you confident we have all the staff in place to deal with exegenesees . I was a member of the white house docs. Ive been an inpatient at walter reed overnight, it is a first rate hospital. The president is receiving the absolute best of care. So people have asked me today what are the National Security implications of the current environment . What are the things we should be worried about . In my judgment right now in this environment, the greatest threat we face is, frankly, misinformation hysteria. In this kind of environment, frankly, social media is not our friend. I would encourage people to get their information about whats going on from reputable, responsible news sources, this network included, because we have to be careful not to buy into conspiracy theories, misinformation that is probably circulating as we speak about what is happening to the president s health and what is happening to the election and so forth. We have the president is in the hospital. So far as we know, hes alert, hes able to issue directions and make decisions. The chief of staff is with him. We have a secretary of defense as far as i know is on the job, we have a department of defense, a secretary of state, a cia director, a National Security adviser who is healthy, hes gotten over covid. So the apparatus of government, so far as i can see, continues to function. I do have this to say, however, i would pro tem of the senate, secretary of state, secretary of treasury, the a. Gvlg g. To consider some fortunatem of quarantine for themselves because they are in sufficient a close proximity to the president in the hospital. This is a wakeup call for all americans to remind us we are still very much in the clutches of this invisible enemy and we have yet to get out and if the most secure person in america comes down with covid, none of us are safe. Your point about a quarantine for people in the line of succession, weve seen this phrase out of the white house, out of an abundance of caution these Staff Members have been tested, out of an abundance of caution, were going to have the president go to the the hospital and i think that makes sense. But this statement from mike pence, under the guidelines of the cdc, the Vice President is not considered a close contact with individuals and he does not need to quarantine. He got a negative test, he and his wife, karen pence. This seems like, i dont know, kind of an abundance of caution moment given where we are. Abundance of kaucaution has bee one could argue, sorely lacking in covid policy and it seems like this would be a time for it. The normal rules that would apply to you and me dont apply or shouldnt apply to the president of the United States and first in line to the president of the United States and possibly the second, third and fourth. Out of an abundance of caution, we should call on those in those very important positions to take care of themselves. The normal rules the normal rules for quarantining and not quarantining and so forth should not apply in this circumstance to these people. You know, you said something about the wakeup call here, and i think if theres any hope for good to come out of this aside from the speedy and safe recovery of everyone involved, it is a wakeup call. And it strikes me you were secretary of state of the department of Homeland Security, its an agency that was created in the aftermath of the worst terrorist attack on american soil that killed 3,000 americans, and we think about National Security in these terms, foreign attacks. I mean, weve lost 210,000 americans. We lost 800 today, and we lose 800 to a thousand a day, day after day after day after day after day after day after day. You know, it just strikes me that this is the National Security problem. This is the threat. Its not, well, what will for adversaries do in this member. The virus is. Chris, that is absolutely correct. Any anything that can kill 210,000 american in seven months is a National Security crisis that touches every corner of our nation. And what i mean when i say wakeup call, i watch with great despair as regions of this country now are seeing spikes in covid, though since mid april we have known what it takes to flatten the curve, we have known that this little 10 cent device can save lives, yet it has become a matter of in some corners Political Correctness or real men dont wear a mask and so forth. My hope is now that the most visible person in this country has come down with covid, all of us will recognize that there are certain ways we protect ourselves and others that are very simple and it not a matter of politics to wear a mask. Jeh johnson who served as department of defense beautiful becoming head of department of Homeland Security, thank you for sharing your expertise with us tonight. Thank you. Tonight the president of the United States is hospitalized less than 24 hours testing positive for of coronavirus. Our coverage continues next. Do not go anywhere. Next. Do not go anywhere if im your president , on day one well implement the National Strategy ive been laying out since march. Well develop and deploy rapid tests with results available immediately. Well make the medical supplies and protective equipment that our country needs. Well make them here in america. Well have a National Mandate to wear a mask, not as a burden, but as a patriotic duty to protect one another. In short, well do what we should have done from the very beginning. Our current president has failed in his most basic duty to the nation. Hes failed to protect america. And my fellow americans, that is unforgivable. As president , ill make you a promise. Ill protect america. I will defend us from every attack seen and unseen, always without exception, every time. Im joe biden and i approve this message. Working, parenting, problem solving. Still a legend. Just more legendary. Chevrolet. Making lifes journey, just better. Within the last few hours the president of helicoptered to Walter Reed Medical Center for treatment of his coronavirus. The president and first lady have access, of course to the best peak of the world. Senator thom tillis has good insurance, same as president ial aid hope hicks. The event that brought some of them together, with some of this appears to have taken place was an event to nominate a Supreme Court justice it put on the court and make sure he was on the court in time to hear the case a weeks after the election in which this administration and republican attorneys general and the department of justice are trying to destroy the entire structure of Health Care Protection in this country. Right now the Affordable Care act, which protects people with preexisting conditions, among a whole bunch of other really important regulations is being targeted by the white house in the midst of a pandemic that has sickened 7. 3 Million People. And if this administration gets its way, if they are victorious in court, it would lead to millions losing their coverage outright, including protections for preexisting conditions, which would be overturned in a country in which there are millions now with a preexisting condition, because they had covid. Even without the Justice Department trying to gut the aca in court, as they are, the uninsured rate has gone up under trump and thats because of policies theyve chosen and because of the pandemic also, several Million People are already losing their health insurance, losing their jobs. Never, ever has it been more apparent that everyone, every single american deserves access to good, Quality Health care. A guarantee of that, that in the midst of an Infectious Disease that is working its way through our entire society. With me now is associate professor of emergency medicine at Columbia University medical center. She treated Covid Patients in new york and in the worst parts of new york. She also had covid her. Its great to have you, dara. Ill start with what information weve gotten about the president and his condition. Honestly the information were getting from the white house is very incomplete. Were hearing he is feeling a fatigued, may have a fever. This is also really early in his course of illness that we know about. Its only been 24 hours since hes either been symptomatic or positive if we trust the information coming from the white house. That is a very rapid course of illness to now have him be in the hospital for what would be experimental or supplemental treatments. What has been your experience of learning the trajectory of this illness . One of the things that has been confounding is it can accelerate very quickly in patients and people find themselves thinking theyre recovering to be admitted to the e. R. Very quickly. Right. So we know patients have about a tenday course ofiliney n illne they are mild to symptomatic, like i had. You may have a couple of days in the middle where you dont feel so well, flulike and then they feel better. And a lot of patients around days six to eight get much worse. Thats what happened to friends i had sick in march. Patients that get admitted early on tend to have a bit more of an aggressive course. Were definitely not looking at a shorter course of 10 to 14 days for somebody that has already been hospitalized but i think theres a lot of premature conversation about what the president is going to do at the end of the disease. Its much more important to get rest, and treatment and he is an elderly, obese patient and he is at risk. We now have people who were at that event at the rose garden, senator thom tillis and mike lee and i believe hicks was there, and there was hugging, hand shaking and other vips around that event. What should the smart play be here from a Public Health, a treatment perspective in terms of all the people who possibly were exposed . You said earlier abundance of caution. At least six people at this event are positive for the coronavirus, at an unmasked event with no social distancing, an indoor event. It would make sense that every single person, including unfortunately the justices children, should be isolated and quarantined for 14 days from their most recent exposure. If anybody at the event was positive and reexposed somebody else, which may be the Senate Judiciary committee who may have convened after the event and senator mike lee is now positive, this would be a consideration to increase the tiling of that quarantine for 14 days from the most recent exposure. Thats right. We should say that mike lee, even though he was feeling slightly symptomatic i think by his own account went to an inperson Judiciary Hearing Committee meeting, Judiciary Committee hearing and we also have the president who was at these various events, people noticing his fatigue, which means he was symptomatic as well earlier in the week. Weve also got week. We got reporting of the debate in cleveland and there are folks in cleavveland who are testing positive. The president s family were offered massings but they declined them. Everyone over the past seven months have moments where they slipped and gotten close to people where they have not worn a mask. This is a reminder of how importance vigilance is. The decisions we make matters. Remember the administration and if allies had been Wearing Masks regularly, we would be in a different position right now. All these people who you woucou to be atrisk or having to quarantine and there will be easier Contact Tracing. We know it can take a few days for gestation of the virus to reach a point thats detected by pcr swab tests. My understanding and correct me if i am wrong, all these folks should be getting tested daily, Vice President pence and joe biden and Amy Coney Barrett, all of those folks should be getting more than one tests. The cidc guidelines do not require testing regularly mostly because of availability of testing. I think regular testing if available and is not a bad idea. A negative test does not negate a quarantine period. It does not matter how many times somebody atrisk is negative, they need to quarantine because of the risk transmitting the virus to other people, not the risk of themselves. Yeah, this is really important. These are the cdcs guidelines about quarantine after exposure. This is the way the country around the world has expressed the this virus. We are talking about the most important people on the planet right now. They should probably listen to them. Thank you cara. Thank you. Three days ago the president was mocking form eer Vice President biden about mask wearing. Today the president postponed all campaigns and hes hospitalized right now, after announcing he and the first lady tested positive for coronavirus around 1 00. Right now the president is at Walter Reed Medical Center. The Vice President and his wife tested negative and stressed the need for mask wearing and social distancing. Joe biden expressed his well wishes for the president and the importance of Wearing Masks. I am joined by publisher of anand giridahars. People have been working through this reaction since 1 00 a. M. A lot of people are up since 1 00 a. M. A lot of skepticism because of information on the white house on this virus had been so unreliable. It is clear it is not made up. How do you think how are you thinking of this moment of a campaign thats obviously still happening in an election 32 days away. One of the things i had to do is be quiet and listen to scientists and defer for their expertise in terms of how to keep myself safe and advise family members and friends and try to provide the Accurate Information on the radio show and upcoming show of zerlina. The science checks out so even if you dont believe in science or the virus or even if you believe President Trump, you dont think you need to wear a mask because President Trump does not wear a mask. You think you are tough enough and healthy and young enoug enough well, scientists were right all along and the most critical piece of advice that we all should heed in this moment is that we need to continue to follow their advice because eventually science catches up with you. If you dont follow it, you put yourself at risk to exposure and thats whats happening of what i am calling today the white houses clusters. We need to Contact Tracing to figure out how many people come down with this horrible virus. It does feel like a very low for the country right now. We are amidst of so many c catastroph catastrophes. The president of the United States is hospitalized with this virus. Well, there has been you know this discussion of norms of politeness and a lot of people saying you got to wish him well even if you dont like him. Since this pandemic struck the world and this country, he has not wished us well and willfully made choices that would results in the death of people, it has been a policy consistently from the mask wearing to the bleach advertising and so on and so forth. A policy that is man slaughter at giant scale. It is this very bizarre moment when it comes around to him. And i think your point when you made briefly just to expand for a second, it is wonderful for him, you and me and zerlina some of the money we earned for him to take that helicopter to get the best care he can. I dont think any of the three of us or anybody watching this resent. Maybe some people resent it a little but we all pay and we are hoping he gets the care he needs and we are paying for that test and ventilators. He in so many recent years revealed to pay those taxes for you and me and zerlina to have care in case we need it one day. This moment is not a moment frankly of one mans health. His behavior has made that an impossibility. This is a moment in which we have to ask if someone was so unable to care for the American People that he got in snare and what chance does he have to take care of anybody for four more years. Yeah. That point is such a profound important one. I want the president to get better because i want people to not be sick and i want people to be healthy and i feel that way about every person thats str t stricken by this virus. This pandemic should be an opportunity for us to do that and there is incredible examples from care workers and people helping each other out. When you institution allize that, we have social insurance, we should have guaranteed healthcare for everyone and make sure people are taken care of and thats the operating principles thats absent horrendously from the beginning. Theyre in court trying to get rid of the aca that protects so many million of americans in a middle of a pandemic. They been the opposite, they been the worse side of the corner. This is a reality check and a wake up call for anybody out there who uses terms like i dont believe in coronavirus or i dont believe this virus is that serious or i believe President Trump when he says it is a hoax. It does not matter what you believe. Science will check out. The scientists have been on studying this virus. Well be smart to heed their advice as we head into the fall. They have been warning us for many months that there will be a get real moment here in the United States so we need wear a mask and stay socially distance until the science say we need to seize that behavior, we listen to them until it is time to stop. Zerlina maxwell whose new show is on peacock. Great to have you. Thank you both. Thank you, chris. Thats all in this week. The Rachel Maddow show starts right now. This has been a week, this has been a year on the air this week . Thank you for joining us at this hour. I am supposed to have a long day planned off today. I am here because whats going on here is a big deal and there is nowhere i rather but trying
