Meeting. And with just over a month so this is a longterm sort of until iowa, my special guest effect that hes had because its been thing after thing after thing thats taken us to tonight, 2020 candidate andrew the point where i think, you yang when all in starts right know, for the first time, we could see the military voter and veteran voter turn against the republican president. Last question for you has to do with the implications of what the president has done in this case and a few other cases. Now. We have shocking new footage. Reaching in to the military its previously unused footage justice system. What that will mean for someone obtained by the New York Times of navy s. E. A. L. S describing actions by the man of the name that sees something that is Eddie Gallagher. Hes the figure at the center of wrong or witnesses an atrocity an enormous moral scandal in the trump administration. Perhaps one of the worse. Over the summer a military court and whats going to go through acquitted him of most of the war their mind . Crimes charges he was charged with but he was found guilty of there was a case in 2017 posing for a picture with a where a seal was involved in a mans corpse and that resulted in him being demoeted. Murder of a green beret. The process this has to do with the telling of stripping his seal status but of misconduct. Then donald trump intervened. People fear now hey if i break restoring his rank, ordering the this code what are the navy to keep him in the seals. Ramifications. Across the military as well. Now its worth noting that so i think now when people see donald trump campaigned on a misconduct that should be pro war crime platform in 2016. Reported that they know that thats their duty and obligation, theres going to be a fear Going Forward on whether or not they should report it at all. One thing is for certain, to the would i approve war boarding . S. E. A. L. S. That we met today on you bet your ass id approve it. That video, they are heros and in a heart beat. They can rest assured that the in a heart beat. American public knows that and and i would approve more than that the American Public in 10, that. 20, or 30 years will look at and dont kid yourself folks. Them in a better light then than it works. They do today. He took 50 bullets and he thank you for making time tonight. Thanks a lot, chris. Up next, the president once again moving the goal post as his impeachment trial dipped them in pigs blood and he approaches. That in two minutes. Impeachment approaches that in two minutes. [ suspenseful music ] had his men load his rifles and he lined up the 50 people and they shot 49 of those people and the 50th person he said you go back to your people and tell them what happened. And for 25 years there wasnt a problem. I said its fine and if we want to go stronger id go stronger too. You have a brother in the second battalion . Its no surprise that eddie yes sir. Theyre walking into a trap. Gallagher would be a celeb for your orders are to deliver a message donald trump and his supporters. Calling off tomorrows attack. He told allies he wants to bring if you fail we will lose sixteen hundred men. Him on the campaign trail with your brother among them. Him for 2020. Get this, just this past week the president and first lady we need to keep moving. Come on hosted gallagher and his wife at theres only one way this war ends. Mara last man standing. Maralargo. A retired special operations chief of seal team 7. The guy you saw posing with the president and his son and personal lawyer. He was accused of very, very serious war crimes in iraq in 2017. He was accused of the attempted murder of unarmed civilians including an old man and schoolgirl. He was accused of stabbing an isis capital multiple times and convicted of posing for a picture with that deadmans corpse. He denies all the charges. Today New York Times published a tro trove of interviews. Statements made from the fellow s. E. A. L. Team members to investigators speaking out about what they saw. The guy is eagle. The guy was toxic. You could tell he was okay with killing anybody that was moving. They also found video recordings when he approached an isis captive he was accused of stabbing. Warning, the first image may be disturbing. Gallagher comes on the scene with his medic bag and pushes the kid down on the ground while he checks him for wounds and right then you can see a hand reach up and turn off the helmet cam. What did see gallagher do . President trump and his all of a sudden he starts allies in the making series of stabbing the dude. I see him laying over him selfcontradictory internally with the knife sticking it into inconsistent constantly evolving his neck. Did he say anything when he did this or literally just pulled out a knife and just started stabbing him . Process. Pulled out a knife and started stabbing him. How close do you think you tweeting out a critique. Were . Me, body, gallagher. Look the house is supposed to do one time, multiple times . All of this work before they it was probably two or three send the articles over to the senate. That work is supposed to be done in the house. Heres the thing. The house tried to do that. Times. The reason they were not able to the New York Times reached out get those witnesses to testify to all of them and they declined is because they tried to and the comments. He said they were ripe with inconsistencies and falsehoods witness and white house ordered and they created a clear road them not to testify. Because we stopped them from map to the acquittal. His lawyer said the new york testifying in the house they times failed to give context to cant testify in the senate. That was the houses job. The video. Thats just absurd on its face. That they had inconsistent stories. The seal team members didnt joining me to make sense of this all of this is senator richard like him because he was too hard on them. Bloomenthal from connecticut. There was a lack of corrobora i think you agree these process corroborating evidence. One of the reasons he was acquitted of murder had to do with a remarkable moment during critiques are absurd but im his trial where the prosecutions curious what you make of star witness, special operator comments yesterday or on tuesday first glass corey scott, a medic by your colleague expressing that said he saw him stab him some disapproval of mcconnells multiple times changed his story statement that he would on the stand. Essentially be working in he said that gallagher stabbed coordination with the white the captive once and he killed house. I think, chris, what those him by suffocation. Comments reflect is that it is no one was prepared for that. It was a shock to everyone in impossible to make sense of this the room. At least for the prosecutors and position that they need more because that witness was testifying under an immunity information and evidence but they dont want it to be that was granted he could not be presented in the senate. Charged for the killing and Eddie Gallagher was acquitted of that position is essentiallyteb. The attempted murder of civilians what is striking and what lisas but was convicted of posing for comments reflect is that the the corpse of the dead captive. We dont know the story of what message is really breaking through to the American People. Lead this medic to change his tune on the stand and admit to thats why 70 of them think killing the captive but we do that witnesses and documents know that after the trial the should be presented in this pentagon basically wanted to kick Eddie Gallagher out of the trial. S. E. A. L. S. And President Trump intervened and ordered them to thats why this strategy of reinevacuate his ra coordinating with the white re house or working hand in glove reinstate his rank and that lead to the public resignation of the is a violation of the oath and thats repugnant to the american secretary of the navy that quit. People. So more and more i think well and trump thinks his embrace of see the American People get it Eddie Gallagher is a way to and that this cover up by mcconnell and trump is ingrace himself with active understood by them. Members of the military and that my republican colleagues their families. Recent polling shows half of active duty troops view the are come police splicit in it. President unfavorably. Joining me now is the deputy theyll be held accountable in editor of the military times the court of Public Opinion in which has been covering this the election and by history. Story along with many other issues and andrew that covers do you anticipate that well the military for the san diego get resolution . Theres reports today that tribune. Whatever talks there had been he was in the courtroom for the full duration of the trial. Between schumer and mcconnell on the ground rules which were let me just start with you maybe adopted by unanimous consent. About that moment i mean, so much happens in the moment in which the star witness of the that they had broken down. Prosecution comes in and changes his story on the stand. What was that moment like in the the ball is in mitch courtroom . Well, it was really surreal. Mcconnells court. We made a very reasonable proposal for witnesses that had going into the trial we had a direct knowledge, again, direct good idea of what each witness knowledge and not hearsay of the was going to say. Events that show conclusively we kind of knew their stories. Tru trumps abuse of power and obstruction of congress and and he suffocated the fighter. Documents such as notes of phone calls and emails and other that was something new. Messages that are direct it was over the courtroom in a evidence that the American People deserve to see and hear. Wave. So i fully understand the i almost the to replay it in my speakers position that she wants a full, fair proceeding mind. Ill come to you in a second. Before she will send over the do we know the full story of articles of impeachment. What happened there. She wants that assurance before why did the testimony change . She appoints her managers and thats what the American People i talk to his lawyer yesterday and he said that in a want to and i think that Mitch Mcconnell will be forced by preliminary interview with corey these cracks in his reflected in scott, he had gone up to the edge and he said something about comments and by other colleagues a suffocation and scotts that are saying it privately. The question is will they say it attorney cut him off saying that publicly . They werent going to go any will they act on it. I want to ask you a question further without clarifying an about the story that we just did with chief gallagher and the immunity deal. President of the United States in the trial before this section reaching in to restore his raeng of testimony the judge told him to overturn and circumvent the he was immune from what he was military justice system. What are the implications of about to say on the stand. That . What do you think that does to this case attracted enormous attention. I wonder from your perspective how it is through current active our armed forces. Duty members. Theyre really deeply disturbing. These are absolutely repugnant and will be regarded by our military because in no way does it reflect their integrity, obviously the president has the power to pardon or grant discipline, or values. Clemency but chief gallagher was acquitted of the most serious charges and was found to be guilty of conduct unbecoming and the navy thought they were dealing with it internally and the president stepped in and said no, we should forget that. We should look beside that. Hes done 8 deployments. And i hope my colleagues will theres a lot of good in his join me in condemning that background so im going to intervene not just on the issue interference by the president of the crime here but all the and also in reaffirming our way down to the issue of his rank, whether or not he would be commitment to strict prosecution reinstated as a s. E. A. L. , of war crimes and respect as well for the military whether or not he could call himself a chief anymore. Professionals who have to so, you know, the revuerberatios administer this system of justice and for our military in are a lot of shock as to the general. Commander in chief coming down all too often as that poll that this far on a case thats already really complicated and you cited reflects our military really has been disregarded and convoluted. How is the picture painted of disrespected by the president as gallagher in the newly unearthed when he with drew troops from footage from the New York Times, turkey. When he sent troops to the border, in effect politicizing how does that fit or not fit with the image painted of him at our great United States military and the implications therefore trial. Are really, very, very it does square with their testimony. In most cases these s. E. A. L. S disturbing. Senator Richard Blumenthal of connecticut. Thank you. Thank you. The president s rational for testified to the same thing they putting the g7 at his own told investigators. Two of these that were in these resort debunkend in black and preliminary interviews were not white. Thats next. Debunkend in black white. Thats next. Called to testify at gallaghers Court Marshall including one who wow. Thanks, zoltar. How can i ever repay you . Initially told investigators he maybe you could free zoltar . Saw gallagher stab the fighter. After scotts testimony, for whatever reason the prosecutors thanks, lady. Taxi decided not to call him and only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Neither the prosecutors of the are you currently using a whitening toothpaste, navy offered any explanation of but not seeing results . Why a witness to this alleged try crest 3d whitestrips. Stabbing did not testify. Its enamelsafe formula lifts and removes stains qstion here leo and i think the to provide 100 noticeably whiter teeth or your money back. Difficulty of this from a moral perspective is the president says hes looking out for our try crest 3d whitestrips. War fighters but of course there were members of his own unit that were so distressed by the actions that they took tremendous risk to come forward to testify, to talk to investigators and they have essentially been thrown by the wayside. Thats the question here. He has thrown himself in gallaghers corner and said hes standing up for war fighters by standing with him but as we saw from the release today a lot of the public heard some of the s. E. A. L. S didnt like him. I dont know what the effect will be of seeing in black and white here just how emotional some of their testimony is and how many folks are sort of left in the wake of this. Now, you know, if youre a member of the military and youre seeing this and you see something improper down range, what is your reaction going to be . Should you report this to your higher ups . Is it something that you feel confident that the military code of justice is going to be upheld and followed or is it something where down the line maybe it can be reversed and you get into trouble for being a whistleblower. Thats a great point about what has been set up with by this one action. Thank you both. Thank you. Joining me now is the former u. S. Army officer and iraq war veteran. The cofounder and former chairman of the vote vets advocacy group. I know that you feel strongly about this case. How do you feel about what has happened . What we learned from the testimony and what the president s involvement here means . When you watch the veterans talk, you can feel the pain in their voices. We can talk about what this means for the United States and foreign countries. We could talk about what this means for our troops currently on the group in combat. We can talk about what this means for future troops that have seen something wrong but the pain that you hear in the voices of the s. E. A. L. S as they go to explain whats happened to them is heartbreaking. What i felt is that they were trying to relieve some of their own guilt of being around an incident or a chief who was their senior noncommissioned officer in this deployment do things illegal and this was a cry for help for them to go to ncis and its hard for me to watch them deal with that pain. Theres also a broader question here about the way the president conceived of what u. S. Policy should be. He talked about killing the family members of terrorists. He seems to relish in the kinds of things that an entire structure has been erected within the arms forces over decades to prevent from happening. He is basically telling the navy, i dont trust you to manage your own business. Tried to convince everyone that the president was just we have never seen a scenario forced to award himself a where the military justice multimillion dollar government contract to host the g7 and system basically is check mated by the commander in chief. Have a bunch of World Leaders to you can do anything wrong right come to south florida in the middle of the summer. Now in any of the Service Branches and if you can get a fox news host to promote you on a show that the president watches that he can undermine the entire military chain of we have people that understand command. What its about. He has damaged military leaders its not about me. Its about getting the right location. The folks for the citizens of responsibility and ethics in washington requested it and youll never guess whether that story holds up. Here with me now, the executive just like through the institution. Director. What did you ask for and what thats really heartbreaking for everybody thats in the military did you get . Thats sit. We asked for what the secret service had. The documents that showed their internal deliberations when they were considering sites. And low and behold what we found was far from what Nick Mulvaney and the president reported was that out of the secret Services Process he was the clear choice and instead, he was added into the process very late in the game. And the secret service had concerns about it. It certainly was not that they came in and begged for this. This was something that we only got really one email and we know theres likely more out there but this was enough to show clearly that the president s version was made up and this is something that benefits his businesses and him personally. One of the most viking things about this at the time is im not over it because of how brazen it was and corrupt it was was at the time, the mayor didnt even know that he said i just talked to the mayor that now needs to plan to host 8 World Leaders and diplomats. He learned this when we did. He still hasnt gotten a call from the white house. That in itself shows you something. But it doesnt look like the city was ever given a heads up about this. This was hardly a thorough process that lead to the president s club rather what it looks like is the president wanting to bring this multimillion dollar world event that would be incredible publicity for his business to his property. And that we dont have a window into that, right . Theres rules and there are public records access that you can get but we just dont get anything about the trump. The freedom of information act lets you get government documents. Now this administration fights us and reporters and others tooth and nail to make it hard to get those but we do ultimately get a lot of of information about whats going on within the government. But the Trump Organization doesnt have to turnover documents and congress and we have in litigation and many others have been fighting to get information about the president s finances from day one. And with very little scope of h businesses. This is something told sporadically at the edges and we cant get into it and the Supreme Court is going to rule on some cases pertaining to financial record subpoenas. Thank you for joining me. Coming up, the race to replace President Trump. Andrew yang joins me ahead. Yand a lot of folks ask me why their dishwasher doesnt get everything clean. I tell them, it may be your detergent. In the tragedy of hundreds of People Killed this by gun violence its a gross, political talking point. The rise in shootings in chicago that did go up quite sharply a number one story across the country. We did a town hall on violence in chicago back in 2017. There was the current mayor who was not the mayor then. We did reporting on policing in chicago as well through the years. According to newly released data from the Chicago Police department shooting incidents are down 40 over the past three years. Murders are down 14 just this year and 36 over the past three years. Now would be can easily imagine a world in which donald trump having smeared chicago for years and having no shame turns around and takes credit for the improvement but he wont do that because he fundamentally does not think chicago is part of the country that he represents. Its a foreign land to him. Its not trump land and that says more about donald trump than it does about chicago. There have been candidates in the race including very prominent people and very serious bios that have come and gone like Kamala Harris that dropped out earlier this month or the mayor of the largest city of america, new york citys bill deblasio hose candidacy barely registered as a blip. Theres been two surprise stories. One is the rise of Pete Buttigieg that won his last election with over 8,500 votes and hes now polling in the top four nationally and is highly competitive in the first two states and the other is andrew yang that few people heard of before he decided to run for president. He has built basically completely from scratch out of nothing a Robust Campaign operation, attracted a genuinely enthusiastic base of support and has raised lots of money and its all allowed him to outlast and outpoll numerous sitting governors and senators and propelled him on to the debate stage even as many of his bigger named rivals have failed to make the cut. Its a remarkable story and joining me is andrew yang, democratic candidate for president. Its good to have you. Great to see you. Happy holidays. Thank you for having me on. So i want to talk about health care. The first, this has been the subject of a lot of debate. You talked about the debate and campaign trail but im slightly confused about your position. The first ad that your campaign ran was with your wife and talking about your son because she says that youd fight for medicare for all. Its been part of the platform along with the freedom dividend which well talk about. You recently put out a health care, some language in the website where you said you support the spirit of medicare for all which leaves me slightly confused about what actually you would want to see happen. What it means for Many Americans is universal medicare thats high quality and zero cost and that is exactly what im championing. We need to provide health care to all americans but i would not get rid of all private insurance plans immediately. Because millions of americans are on the plans and enjoy the plans and in many cases negotiated for those plans in lieu of higher wages. The goal of the government has to be to demonstrate that we can out compete the private insurance plans and squeeze them out of the market overtime. Is that something along the lines of positions taken by joe biden, Pete Buttigieg and others so there would be the availability of buying into medicare for people . Yes, it is quite similar but our plan has lower minimal cost for Many Americans and then copays just so you have a little bit of skin in the game. So it is similar but we think that we have improved upon some of the other proposals that are out there. The other big issue that you have talked about and i think has been one of the engines of your campaign, for awhile its the thing that you were known for is some version of a universal basic income. You called it dividend of 1,000 a month. Theres a lot of people theres two questions about that. One is a confusion about how that would interact with other things the government does, the earned income tax credit, would those go away and be replaced by that leaving someone worse off and for the people that are in poverty or have problems with low income work, thats not enough money. The last thing id do is take something away from americans or leave someone worse off. The freedom dividend is universal and opt in and you would be foregoing certain cash and cash like benefits that do not include health care or housing vouchers. When i talk to americans around the country and i loved the earned income tax benefit but 30 of americans were eligible for the earned income tax credit dont receive it so they dont understand how to file for it and the massive timing of payment issues because if your car breaks down now and youre going to get a tax refund next spring it doesnt help you get to work. So i would never do anything to leave americans worse off. We have to build a foundation that elevates us all and starts to move us forward in the 21st century because were going through the greatest Economic Transformation in our countrys history right now. Lets talk about that. You talk about the threat of automation. And you connect that in some ways. Similar school of thoughts, some people have written about other contexts that automation is going to take away a lot of peoples jobs in the future. Its going to get progressively more ambitious. The counter to that is that that threat has always loomed at every moment of Industrial Development and theres something called a labor fallacy. The idea that theres a set number of jobs and the robot or machines or factory machines theres less for everyone else which is not the case. Why do you think its different this time . Well, the rate and pace of change and the scope of technology is much more treejs. Its going to impact parts of the economy than past transitions. Im here in South Carolina and they lost 90,000 manufacturing jobs. Now a third of their stores and malls are closing and being a retail clerk still the most common job in our country. So we have to recognize that yes, theyre going to be many new jobs that get created but these jobs are going to tend to be for more different people with different skills in smaller numbers than the jobs that are being lost in communities around the country. But isnt that partly just a question of like labor Bargaining Power and also a little bit of redistribution . There was no reason that freor instance making a car was a good middle class job until they unionized and made it a good middle class job. Lots of jobs might get created and the question about how much power workers have over their wages ends up being the determing one. You hit the nail on the head. Where unions have been the Massive Force for better compensation and benefits but its declined by 50 over the last number of years and as a result most americans are not benefitting from that collective Bargaining Power. If you put this foundation of 1,000 a month into workers hands it makes workers much, much harder to exploit and push around and this plan that im championing was not originally my plan. Andy stern that used to be the Largest Labor union leader in the country proposed this as a response to automation in his 2015 book raising the floor. So this idea has been with us for a long time. Its just overdue that we actually put it into law. Final question that i want to ask you about your trajectory here and your relationship to the Democratic Party. It seems to me that from the folks that are supporters of yours and people online youre reaching a lot of people that havent traditionally either been involved in politics or part of the Democratic Party. How do you view your relationship with the Democratic Party or your role in the larger ecosystem of the party in whose primary youre running . Well, thanks for asking chris. I have been a registered democrat for a long time. I served as an honorary ambassador in the obama administration. To me the Democratic Party needs to try to dig deeper and figure out how were going to solve the problems that got donald trump elected but i have been a loyal democrat for years. Im trying to provide new energy and ideas to help us all move forward in the 21st century. I would never do anything to increase the chances of donald trump becoming a president again or staying president and i am thrilled that im bringing independents and libbertarians into the fold. Thats how were going to grow the thank you so much for making time tonight. I appreciate it. Coming up the state of the rest of the 2020 field. As i was just saying a lot has changed in the democratic president ial field this year. Candidates have come and gone, and then once we thought we were done with all the new candidates, other new candidates have shown up. Theres been a lot of fluidity and twists and turns but its also been a stable race in some ways. Consider this as pointed out on twitter in december of last year, a year ago, 2018, joe biden was polling at 27. 5 and Bernie Sanders was at 19 . One year later biden is polling at 27. 8 and sanders is at 19. 3 . It is almost identical. Joining me now a pair of democratic pollsters. Linda lake, and msnbc analyst cornell dellcher. I was so struck by that little factoid from gabe and i want to go to each of you. On some level its actually not that surprising. Bernie sanders was the runnerup last time and joe biden is probably, you know, the most stability of those two so far . I think stability is exactly whats marked the election. Ocra primary voters kind of flirt and date with a number of people and then they come back to think about who are they going to marry. And who theyre going to marry is really important this time because who theyre going to marry has to beat donald trump, and that lends a certain stability to the people who had the broadest most diverse and longest term coalitions and those were really joe biden and Bernie Sanders. What is really going on, cornell, is theres been an extremely stable primary among 60 of democrats who did not graduate from Fouryear College and mostly love biden and biden and a relatively volatile one among the 40 who did graduate and the media only covers the 40 . What do you think of that, cornell . What i think is two things. One i think i have to comment on this. I love that yang interview, it was fantastic. By the way, chris, im sure hes in South Carolina, he went out and found every black yang supporter he could possibly find i dont know if thats true, but they were there. Thats politics, dude. It also tells sort of a broader conversation about your ability to have be able to compete for people of color. To the larger point and i have davids voice still in my ear from 2007, 2008, it is a state by state race. Yes, it is incredibly stable at the top but its not a national election. Hillary clinton was always sort of the national frontrunner and if you look at some of the other states, its a lot more volatile in iowa and a lot more volatile in New Hampshire than it is nationally, and those states will matter as well as South Carolina and nevada in the longterm. One of the things that one of the sort of new wrinkles and what could have been a source of volatility is these two people were running, tom steyer and michael bloomberg, who are just spending unreal amounts of money. Each over a 100 million. Together theyve lapped the field multiple times in spending. Its almost like theyre running a Political Science experiment about the marginal effect of a marginal dollar of tv advertising. Its almost like you cook this up in a lab, and so far its been enough to like give them a pulse in the polling but not much more than that. What do you think . And its not just the tv ad, its the marginal impact of an online ad and i think Amy Klobuchar had it right which she said the Democratic Party doesnt like billionaires. Even the billionaires dont like billionaires. So im not sure you can buy the primary in the democratic primary and caucus system. No one spending 100 million, barely tapped into their resources. Thats really the question to me what i find in a dispassionate discryptive sense fascinating is i dont know cornell if bloomberg decides to spend literally 1 billion is that enough to make you or literally you can spend all the money you have and it doesnt matter . New, look full transparency ive done work, and so im ive taken some bloomberg money, but that said i dont think you can and one of the things we worry about in politics all the time is how much our candidate is going to be outspent. And if our candidate is outspent tremendously, it absolutely has an impact on the race. And a guy like bloomberg, look he was supposed to be mayor of new york, but he has a track record and deep pockets and something to say, i dont think you can completely discount that out. I think were at a different point and different time in our elections. Thats the open question. I honestly dont know the answer. He and andrew yang are essentially tied in National Polling just to give a perspective of where things are in the polling averages. The last question to you is the degree to which warren who has just sent out an email saying her Campaign Fund raising has slowed a bit, you know, that campaign because they dont have the stable base of Bernie Sanders quite as much, they havent built that list over as much time and because they dont take big dollar donors, theyre much more susceptible to the momentum, even if the susceptible momentum is one thing, as compared to other campaigns. While most countries use the 70th anniversary of world war ii to honor those who fought in those wars, certain countries
