Undiscussed trump meeting. They know that they have to take me down in order to take donald trump down. And as 2020s democrats make their populous appeal, the billionaires fight back. Thats not correct and thats not american can. Im a little bit tired of listening to things that there pie in the sky. Not one but twentytwo big announcements for Stacey Abrams when all in starts right now. Good evening from new york. Just a few weeks after the revelation that the president of the United States was suspected by his own government of working on russias behalf, were learning about yet another Undisclosed Exchange the president had with Vladimir Putin. No american interpreters, just putin and putin pfrs own interpreter. This is wildly out of step with the usual protocol and if you were disposed, you might conclude this is how the president meets with his handler. We knew the president had spoken briefly with putin late last year turring the g 20 summit in argentina. They informed a quote conversation only after it was revealed by press but now they reno report was longer and more substantive than we were led to believe. It was accompanied by mu melania trump, his wife but no staff, while mr. Putin was there. According to a russian government officials account, the two spoke for about 15 minutes about a number of Foreign Policy issues. That came president cancelled a formal meeting scheduled, siting a russian attack on ukrains navy. Just before the president had been implicated as individual one in Court Proceedings with Michael Cohen. And suggests talks lasted later than previously and this is the seconds time they had a private ch private chat during the global summit. The first was at the 2017 summit where the president was caught on camera motioning somewhat desperately from putin across the dinner table and that came just a few hours after the president seized his own interpreters notes. And there was the one on one meeting where the president has his own translator but no staff while meeting withputon for hours behind closed doors. The president s own director of National Intelligence admitted he diz doesants know what went with on. Dhu you have any idea what went happened in that meeting . Youre right i dont. As time be tos by and president has already mentioned some things. But thats the president s peraugative. He asked me how that would have been conducted, i would have suggested a different way. Is there a risk Vladimir Putin could have recorded it . That risk is always there. Asked about those meetings today, he hinted his response was classified. Director haskell and cotes, would this put you in a disadvantage position in terms of understanding russias efforts to advance its agend against the United States . This is a serious issue and one i look forward to discussing that in a closed session. Democratic senator of virginia is the vice chair of the Senate Intelligence committee. Senator, to you have concerns about this latest news about the president having yet another substantive conversation with Vladimir Putin without note takers, without with american translator . I heard about that reporting and im interested. Today in our public hearing senator widen raised the issue of did the Intelligence Community get a full readout of the helsinki meeting between President Trump and Vladimir Putin. I think its importedant some senior official get those readouts from the meetings. Do you have concerns the president is compromised by russia . I think its terribly important the Mueller Investigation finishes, that our Senate Investigation finishes and obviously its been more than a little bit bizarre over the last up cannel of years to see a president of the United States in public kowtow to a russian president. Respectfully thats not annancer to the question. To you have concerns the president is compromised by russia . Year going to finish our investigation. Im not going to draw any conclusions. Thats been the operating principal since we started and ill point out as you know and i think many of the viewers know, were the last bipartisan investigation going and i think thats terribly important. Particularly when mueller comes out that there becomes some bipartisan val dart out there. What will you tell meanal about the amount of confidence they should have in your committees work, particularly by democrats who are watching. Contrastic to what happened in the house intelligence commit canny. I think with senator ber we weve even had joint press conferences along the way. Our committee has made a number of interim reports. We can confirmed the fact and it was ton in a unanimous bipartisan way that not only thid russians interfere but they did on behalf of trump against clinton. We pointed out the fact they touched 21 states lec torl systems and luckily we have Bipartisan Legislation to protect that going forward. And it water our committee that made the first reveals about the level of usage they maids of particularly facebook and twitter. And thats something im going to come back to legislatively this year. They seem to be at odds, frankly on two of the key policy issues. The white house has declare said progress they seem to think is nots apparent and has not been showed and kind of the opposite with iran where the white house se seems to be saying theyre in pursuit what to you make of the disconnect . These folks have a tough job and the most important aspect of anybody in the Intelligence Community and i asked all of these vinyls before they got confirmed. Will you be willing to speak truth to power . And i think youve what if Intelligence Community giving unanimous conclusions on some of these key areas. And it appears this president doesnt want to hear the truth or reflect the opinions of the Intelligence Community and that puts us in a challenging position. Final question about the first bill. S1, a variety of sanctions, including a provision that allows them to groups of citizens a lot of tms voted against it. New york times saying this is essentially unconstitutional. Whats your response to that argument . My response is there are i think appropriate ways and some states have weighed in i think with appropriate regulations of being against the bds movement. I support israel. But i believe there may be some parts of the legislation that are current canly brought up that naasz first hurdles with 75 votes that may ble correct saie amendsed in the house. There water couple of different legislative vehicles out there. I think some are going to be reexamined in the house. Thank you for making some time. Thank you. For more on the president and russia and the role congress has to play, im joined by hakeem jeffries. Your reaction the president had another undisclezed and it appeared substantive conversation with Vladimir Putin . The more we learn, the more every single american should be concerned about the relationship bedon on the and russia and what may or may not have taken place during the 2016 campaign. Whats clear to me is there was a triangular relationship, perhaps facilitated by roger stone, one of the president s best friends. Theres greing evidence there was a conspiracy to sell out our democracy too, artificially place donald trump in the white house. Well have have to threat Mueller Investigation run its course before we can determine who is culpable. But the more we learn about the fact President Trump continues to play footsy with Vladimir Putin, the more concerned we shouldby. Obviously Michael Cohen was going to come 37th before the house government oversight committee. Shouldnt there be open public hearings, starting now. First, we as House Democrats should continue to focus on our people the ajengenda. And cleaning up corruption and the mess here in washington d. C. But second we do take our article one constitutional responsibility seriously as a separate and co equal branch of government. We dont do work for donald trump. We work for the American People and unlike what happens with my call caneges acting like wholly owned by the Trump Administration. Those days are over. And were going to do legitimate oversight. Right but it has to be conducted in public largely. Sun lites the best disinfectant. I know its early, there was a hearing today, if im not mistaken on hr 1, all is anticorruption and pro democracy legislative ajendsau. All of that has to happen in public. We continue to operate in the black box when theres a bunch of worrying facts that people want to get to the bottom of i have think youre going to see active engagement, as well as active engagement from the committee of oversight and government reform. With resneepect to intel commit, much of their work is behind closeder tos because of the sensitivity of the information. So thats the reason i assume the Michael Cohen hearing will be taking place but i dont believe year going to give up on in term oz of what cohen and others have to say are brought to the American People. Theres legislation intertused to make sure that the whatever report is produced by the special counsel would be made public. Is that a legislative initiative you can imagine happening in the house . Absolutely. And as a member of the house judiciary committee, i can say chairman nadler and every other democr democratic member want to make sure when it was issued, only has to be disclose thoods department of justice is made available not just to congress but to the American People. All of the facts should be known once the Mueller Investigation has been completed. Final question on oversight. It looks like William Barrs vote is february 7th. You have the current acting attorney general whit cankaker you serve on the 8th. Are you looking forward to snth . We look forward to that. We needs to figure out what he has or has not dwone to make sue the Mueller Investigation is not impeded. Natasha, staff writer for the atlantic and National Security analyst neds price. And ned, let me start with you because you tid serve in the nse. My understanding and i wants you to correct me if im wrong. My understanding is there are brief sides and they tend to be staffed. This doesnt sound like that. It doesants sound like that at all. You might pass a leader in the hallway and say lelts have a quick tactical chat about something. And the french president , the british prime minister, you may not have an aid accompanies. When you chat with anned averse aerial relationship, you will typically have a note taker and a translator, your own not relying on the russian franz lartd, for instance. There was Something Interesting nart mention said and thats the sourcing. If you reads the sourcing in the times is the russians. This may be reminding him again and again that we have stuff we can hold over your head. Lets Work Together and how about you find way to make our policy wishes come true or we can make your life more difficult. And this has happened before. The meeting with kislyak there day after firing comey when the president infamously told them i got rid of all the pressure. They to have they do seem to have more information about these meetings than are being publicly disclosed by our president. By my count at least a half a dozen times weve learned of his interactions from the russians before the trif beTrump Administration and i think nids point is an important one. They wanted to make the Trump Administration look really bad at this moment in time, then doing this and raising more questions about whether or not trump is compromised and like ned said reminding him they have leverage is a strategic move by them. The question about what they spoke about during this meeting, the 15 or 20 minutes they were sitting there, melania, trump, putin and the translator. It also came right as the news was breaking that Michael Cohen had told hadded admitted essentially to lying about the trump tower moscow deal. He cancelled the meeting at g 20 right when this came out. So did they discuss sear sglu because trump announced the withdrawal from syria. Were there discussion cans about venezuela . And that point natasha makes is an important one about the administrations venezuelas policy had is is aggressive. So theres a conflict there. And conflict in syria where the president announced the abrupt withdrawal. Thats on the other side of the ledger in terms of where the president is with the russians. Well, thats where youre right on counts. This isnt really trumps Foreign Policy. This is john boltons, when it comes to syria and russia. Last month in december i should say when President Trump said were getting out of syria, he said were leaving and were leaving now. Never did he say anything about an enduring presence. That is something john bolton and pompeo set forward subsequently. When it come cans to venezuela and the rumor of 5,000 troops, i think thats the work of john bolton. You look at the video and the way he moved his paper around. This is a fox news contributor, someone who knows how to wauork camera and knows how to send a message and i think thats what he was doing yesterday. For the first time on the record, the Mueller Probe is wrapping up. Hes rrb going to be beforeress. What do you make of that announcement which can wasnt sure footed but a public announce snmt. It was in response to a question that a reporter asked and in that way seemed off the cuff. He did say he was briefed on the investigation and form Justice DepartmentOfficials Say look this is something they would have discussed proier to the press conference and say this is going to come can up but it is weird though that he gave a definitive answer and seems like he was trying to nudge mueller along while trying to appease donald trump and say this investigation is going to wrap up soon. Dont make any rash decisions. He didnt look comfortable. Still to come roger stone making an appearance in court r,. One of the windiest places in america. R,. And home to three bp wind farms. In the offchance the wind ever stops blowing here. The lights can keep on shining. Thanks to our natural gas. A smart partner to renewable energy. Its always ready when needed. Or. Not. At bp, we see possibilities everywhere. To help the world keep advancing. And i heard that my cousins so, wifes sisters husband was a lawyer, so i called him. But he never called me back if your cousins wifes sisters husband isnt a lawyer, call legalzoom and well connect you with an attorney. Legalzoom. Where life meets legal. With the chase mobile app, jason wu could pay practically anyone, at any bank, all while putting on a runway show. Or, he can make it even easier meow with recurring payments to his cat sitter. And now shes ready for the catwalk. Chase. Make more of whats yours. Roger stone was in d. C. For what was others with a routine arraignment. But outside was chaos. Stone was supported by the proud boys, the violent far right group whose members beat up a bunch of people in new york and chanting roger stone did nothing wrong had is a trustworthy pronouncement from that crew. While protesters chanted lock him up and listened to the beatles back in the ussr. And he looks like its a joke despite the fact he might die in prison. A new report suggests Robert Mueller is prehappens preparing additional charges for the man who brags hes known trump for 40 years. Co can author of russian roulette. The inside story of putins war on america. Is this the first part of what they have on him or is there more . Obviously i dont know. Its tantalizing the report that there might be more. But i suspect not. Muellers people spent a lot of time on roger stone, questioning everybody who had contact with him going over hundreds if not thousands of emails and text messages. They were clearly trying to prove more than what was in the indictment. Theres you know theres a lot of meat in that indictment, especially very damming evidence about his lives, the congress when he testified, particularly when he said he had no emails ortects relating to his efforts to learn about julian asauchgs emails. Obviously not true and some of his thuggish texts to randy cred co, youre prepared to die, a rat a stoolie, all of that was deserving of indictment. But the goal they were looking for was to show he really was in communication with Julian Assange as he publicly said and the fact is you look at the indictment and they werent able to prove that. Then there question bem cans. Why was he lying about all of this . The whole thing is bizarre. Hes committing crimes. Because hes roger stone. Thats what hes done all his life. But he lie fooz congress and cant produce witnesses for a living . Look you would think he would be able to turn them off . They all lie about russia all the time. So whautsz tlr point . In roger stones case, hes playing a role. Hes been playing a role all his professional life. All you got to do is watch the netflix film and you see who this guy is and he relishes it and i think he is now, whether hes thought through this is going to end up spendic the rest of his life in prison, i dont know. But hes clearly enjoying the limelight right now. Therestectses that involve you i want your response to. This is him texting credico. Essentially tries to set up credierkts co as a back channel patsy. You said you didnt believe it. You now a deep state stooj. You should strap dynamite to your body and invite to another dinner. Its the least you could do for your country. Thats urging him to become a suicide bomber and blow me up. And sets the context for a lot of the texts and emails in the indictment. This was last january and i was finishing up russian roulette. The book i wrote with david corn and interviewed credico in which he disputed stones account of credico being the back channel. I had to go to stone for comment andh i did stone came ballistic and began sending these vile tebts messages threatening him. This was not. What does he care . Thats the mystery. Thank you very much. Style come is the Trump Administration planning to go to war in venezuela . The enormous implications next. At work. And after work. He does it all with dr. Scholls. Only dr. Scholls has massaging gel insoles that provide allday comfort. To keep him feeling more energized. Dr. Scholls. Born to move. Heres a question that seem said absurd on its face. Is the Trump Administration preparing to go to war in venezuela . Announcing crippling sanctions on the oil company had is the chief revenue and the master mind appears to be john bolton. Fames for military intervention in all kinds of places. A man who appeared with a yellow legal pad that he happened to hold facing without the words 5,000 troops to columbia written on it. Is there any circumstance under which American Forces would get involved . The president has made it clear on this matter that all options are on the table. Okay. None of this is particularly confidence inspiring given boltons track record and americas bloody history in Central America the envoy, literally convicted of crimes in iran cont can ruwho master minded relationships with regimes in latin america. Are these the best people to inzu near a u. S. Policy that actually helps venezuelans out of their current misery . Joining me is joaquin castro. Also host as podcast. Renaissance man. Youre on the Foreign Affairs committee. To you think u. S. Military intercension should be quoteen the table. I dont. This is not a question. I thought i would be answering this year. Unfortunately you have somebody like john bolton who has been very eager to go to war in other countries. It should be a cause for concern and im glad youre highlighting this issue tonight. So im clear theres no war in venezuela without congressional approval, right . Ticket in another part of the world. So this would be a unilateral decision by the president. I think it would be a terrible decision. We need to work with the organization like the one of american states w the u. N. And other countries in the region and do everything we can to make sure, i think that theres a democratic election for president in venezuela as soon as possible and watch out for human rights protections in venezuela and make sure people arent politically oppressed. Theres one line of thinking that this is to spook muduro to worry. The bolton pad being done intentionally. What are you being told on the hill . What do you know about where this is heading . Are they are driving the policy . Weve not heard much, actually. I have two briefings on it tomorrow. And remember the Intelligence Committee because republicans have not appointed members, we have had zero meetings since this term began and so year hopefully have better information tomorrow. But they have not reached out to provide, tell us hot their strategy is, if they are thinking of engaging militarily, what the rational is. So congress is in the dark so far in terms of what the administration has told us. Should Americans Trust john bolton, mike pompeo and aberooms to pursue a policy that ends up being going for the people of venezuela. Americans have to makeup their own minds. Do i trust them . No, i to not. Given the track record and the president doesnt have an interest in venezuela. It will follow what the hawkish people on his staff will do. It gives me cause for concern and i dont trust them. The sanctions announced yesterday will have a severe impact. Theres concern that will be widely felt among just the people of venezuela, many who are opposed to the current president and regime already suffering, lost a lot of weight tew food shortages. Are you concerned about this increasing the misery of people there . Often times you can use sanctions to change a count cannery can countrys Economic Policy or punish for bad behavior. Its different in a nation where theyve been starving for a while. A average person losing 15 to 25 pountds per year and society on the verge of nafalling apart, t throw more sanctions on that, i think its bad timing. 2020 billionaires want you to know theyve had just about enough of this raising their taxes. Get your human to visit wellsfargo. Com woof. What would she do without me . What do you think of senator warrens idea of a tax on golf . Number one, i think the constitution lets you impose income taxes only. Number two, i dont know of any country thats done that. If you want to look at a system thats none capital, look at the wealthiest country in the world and today people are starving to death, its called venezuela. When i see Elizabeth Warren come out with a ridiculous plan of taxing wealthy people, a sir tax of 2 because it makes a good headliner and sends out a tweet when she knows in fact thats not something that will ever be passed. This is whats wrong. You cant just attack these things in a punitive way by punishing people. The presence of two billionaires as of now pursuing a president ial campaign has an effect on one of the main points of contention in this upcoming president ial primary season, what to do about americas levels of inequality and the power. Warren responded to schultz in a tweet quote whats ridiculous is billionaires who think they can buy the presidency to keep the system rigged for themselves. Democrats dont seem to be super big fans of politics that make them less wealthy and have useful spokesperson poll along with anonymous sniping two reporters. But its a testament how far the conversation shifted that higher marginal tax rates and medicare for all are central points of discussion for democratic president ial nominees. Here is Kamala Harris in her first down hall in iowa. Listen, the idea is that everyone gets access to medical care and you dont have to go through the process of going through an Insurance Company, having them give you approval, going through the paperwork, all of the delay. Who of us has not had that situation to wait for approval and the dr. Soctor says i dontw if your Insurance Company will cover this, lets eliminate that and move on. Howard schultz, please dont run for president , wonder what the thesis is. Communications director for justice democrats. I thought that Kamala Harris moment was really interesting because in terms of where she is and where she comes from the party, she is not like the left most person returning and she was very straightforward about medicare for all. That was not an evasive answer. Its wild that Kamala Harris is the scentrist candidate. That shows how politics shifted. Shes cosponsored medicare for all. Absolutely. I think what is new is her being very forthright about what that means, right . Were not for a gradual phasing out of private insurance but coming out for the most ambitious possible version of it. You see Howard Schultz and others refer to the wealth tax and talked about alex yanld cortez, they dont know how to argue because their view is its preposterous but think its good politics for them. Are they wrong . Its great for the progressive movement, the populous movement to have people like schultz and bloomberg be the face of the anti wealth tax campaign. Youre right about that. Honestly, what is happening is centrism refers to the middle. Its a fringed movement of the 1 but right now what were seeing is that these corporate friendly politicians are incredibly out of touch with the Democratic Party and Republican Party electret. Trump did not run on trickle down economics. He ran on bucking the republican establishment on some of these things. They arent popular in america right now. I want to show Howard Schultz welcome to the show moment. He goes to do a book event in new york. Here is what happened. Take a look. I wanted to clarify the word independent, which i view merely as a designation on the ballot. Dont help elect trump you egotistic billionaire, go back to getting twitter and other billionaires. They think they know how to run the world. Thats not how democracy is. You know, i almost obviously i dont want Howard Schultz to run for president. I think his entry into the political stage has been catastrophically misjudged and there is something bizarre about his personal peak at the idea of a 2 wealth tax on fortunes over 50 million. He has a fortune over 50 million. He doesnt want you to spend his money. Hes going to spend 500 million on his campaign. He seems genuinely personally offended at this prospect, which by the way, a wealth tax, other countries in the world, European Countries have wealth taxes. This is not something unique to say, venezuela. Im sorry, wait, let me stop on this. Every american who owns property weighs a well tax. If you pay property taxes, you are already paying a well tax. Sorry, continue. So i almost have to feel bad for Howard Schultz for having blundered on to this stage expecting what are selfevident truths and being greeted with like mockery. Here is what i think this idea that the people are looking for Howard Schultz is nuts but here is a legitimate point in terms of the describing of the politics. You see people on the left particularly talk about medicare for all polls so well or a wealth tax polls so well, which is true but thats also the untested alcohchamber of combat. Those ideas will get flexed and frisked and worked over and its possible that they are not as popular after they have to be fought over as they are when abstractions. Look, right now in the polling they are very popular. There was a time repealing obamacare was popular. I want to be clear. There is also a time where medicare was attacked by ronald reagan, gold water and george h. W. Bush. There is a time when the Affordable Care act was a thing totally, yes. Well see the exact same tke attacks this time. Weve overcome the challenges. When people actually are looking at kind of changes in their own lives, most people i think its safe to say people hate their Health Insurance but are still panicked at the idea of going on to not just a system for other people but a new system for themselves. Go ahead. But the thing is that people hate their Insurance Company and like their doctor. Thats the issue. The reason its good for Kamala Harris to defend her policy position is explain to the American People what the policy actually is. Thats a big thing, too. You dont see the defensive crouch. Thats interesting. Kamala harris came up through these politics particularly on things like crime. She was not crouching in that response. Thats a real sign to me.
