Despite that ongoing very real threat to our electoral integrity, the head of the National Security agency, admiral mike rogers, testified to Congress Today the president has not directed him to do a single thing topping disrupt Russian Election hacking operations where they originate. Yet, christopher wray, the director of the fbi testified hes been given no direction from the president to do anything to stop russia. The president hasnt levied a single sanction on russia in connection with election mete meddling and today, admiral rogers says that russia is acting basically with impunity and that he hasnt been given any direction or any authority to go after these russian threats at the source. So the only conclusion one can draw is that the president is derelict in his duty. He took an oath to defend our democracy, our constitution. Its part of the reason Vladimir Putin does not like Hillary Clinton because of what she had to say about that round of elections. What is your sense of what could be done to create deterrents here . I think theres at least three lines of effort that need to be undertaken. The first is we need to be levying sanctions against them for the activity theyve already conducted because that raises the costs and shows they actually have to pay a price. What admiral rogers said today is theyre not feeling that cost right now. Secondly, we need to harden our defenses and make sure that our election systems and as you noted at the top of the program, some of those have already been penetrated cannot be broken into by the russians. We need to give the nsa and cyber come the outfits that admiral rogers sits on the top of the authority they need to be able to effectively push back against these russianbacked cyber hackers when they try to mount the next attack. So weve got to play defense. We have to raise the costs. And we have to be clear with Vladimir Putin he is going to pay a price if he tries to do this again. Mieke, as a veteran of the hill, did you think that rogers was essentially kind of blowing the whistle today . It struck me as fairly remarkable language for someone who is a member of the administration to use in that context. Thats right. What you see here is senior military officer who is in the last stage of his career. He has nothing left to lose. There are no more jobs for him saying i am deeply concerned that we are not doing enough that, we are under attack and we are not stopping it. Its really you see this very rarely. The last time was when general shinseki was trying to sound the alarm about what a tark undertaking it was going to be and how much it would cost us as a nation. I think rogers is being very clear that the president is not giving him the authority that he needs and the question is, has he presented plans to the president to do anything about this. What do you make of this inability to act against the context of what we know now about what happened in the election . Look, i mean, i said in earlier answer it boggles the mind. Really what it comes down to is President Trump is choosing, actively choosing not to do anything about this. And i think you can only draw one of a couple conclusions. One is that hes hoping it helps him and republicans in the future. Hes happy to have the russians keep doing this. Another is that the russians have something on him. Were being fully cooperative because you know, as a white house, the president said there was no collusion, no finding of wrongdoing. Thats not the truth at all. Hope hicks came to the Congress Today to the Intelligence Committee and stonewalled. Didnt want to answer any questions about her time in the white house. And thats the period of time where we have the most questions for her. Its interesting because the white house has allowed some of the witnesses who worked there to testify almost freely and others theyve kept them bottled up including hope hicks and steve bannon. Theyre basically relying on this idea that the republicanled committee is not going to subpoena the other witnesses besides steve ban been, not going to hold them in contempt or otherwise get them to answer the questions that that were asking. Was she in there with an attorney today. She had a few attorneys with her. What is it like when she deems out of bounds . What happens . The answers, you know, that they would take it underadvisement or they werent going to answer the question which i thought was incredibly arrogant to say were just not going to answer. We asked why . Were not going to answer. Im confused here. It seems that her conversations with the president in the white house are actually things that plausibly you can make an executive pring argument to cover. Sure. But that just would come from the white house. The white house would say we are invoking executive privilege formally. You cant ask her about these things. It was in the process of the official duties. They havent done that. No, thats right. We believe that theyve not formally said that theyre invoking executive privilege. Thats one thing. Theres also a debate over whats covered within executive privilege. But the interesting thing today is that she would not talk about anything having to do with her time at the white house including any conversation with anyone even if they werent associated with the white house. Which was an extraordinarily broad interpretation of executive privilege. That basically covered a conversation with anybody. So bannon did something similar. He was on the phone back to the white house. He came back again. There was an on the spot subpoena. Theres a question what happens to him. Are your colleagues on the republican side, have they offered any interest in a subpoena or a contempt citation here . No, none at all. Its my understanding from the majority that theyre not going to compel her testimony as far as we can tell. Steve bannon is in a different case because hes out of favor. Hes beak a man with no country. Hes riled up some of the republicans on this committee anyway. Breitbarts probably gone after some of them. Theyre not happy with him for that. Im sorry. I find this whole thing bizarre. The witnesses come in and operating this nebulous space. You ask questions, some they want to answer, some they dont. It never gets adjudicated. It seems its a buffet. They choose what they want and what they dont. Thats what its become. Theyre gaming the system, counting on this committee, this republicanled committee protecting them from having to answer these questions. And really, chris, they probably will. They probably wont make these witnesses answer these very important questions. So that is in a sense an obstruction of justice on its own. Are you learning new things anymore . Sure. The witnesses as they testify for hours there are new things and useful things that come out. But there are still more witnesses we need to talk to. Witnesses can need to come in again and equally as important, theres a lot of information weve gotten that we needed to go verify and track down other leads for.
