After delaying a key procedural vote yesterday when it failed to earn enough republican support, Senate LeaderMitch Mcconnell has not abandoned his strategy of negotiating the bill in
conservatives dont like those ideas so the bill has to become more conservative. It has to be more of a repeal bill. Making matters worse, new polls show the bill has almost no public support. As polarized as this country is now, an overwhelming number of americans agree on something. They donal like this bill at all. It has 17 approval in one poll, 16 in another, and in a third, an astonishing 12 . At this point, republicans dont sound optimistic. Is a deal over this possible by friday . Pig can fly. Today while republican senators were busy meeting in private chambers, protesters were out in full force, carping out in hall ways, many getting arrested including once again at least one activist in a wheelchair. This evening, demonstrators and
democratic lawmakers have been marching around the capital to voice their opposition. Given the many hurdles, the senate could use a high profile advocate. And lean on republican senators to take a deal. But attempts by the president of the United States to play that role so far seem to have back fired badly. Because he appears to have nowhere near he grasp of policy required to make an affirmative case for the bill. According to the weekly standard, several senators who have spoken with the president with the legislation describe an executive with little apparent understanding of the basic principles of the forms. The Washington Post reports in private conversations on capitol hill, the president is often not taken seriously. And after a meeting yesterday, one senator who supports the bill departed with a sense, and i quote here, the president did not have a grasp of some basic elements of the senate plan and seemed especially confused when
essentially, a repeal and replace. Joining me now, youre both shaking your heads. I mean, he doesnt know whats in the bill at all. It didnt matter in the senate. It will probably matter at some point. I suppose so. He has neither intellect nor the Temperature Perlt to be the president. He doesnt know anything. And you cant ignore himmest eats up every bit of seasonablory in the room. Although Mitch Mcconnell, with an ordinary president , a normal president , Mitch Mcconnell would have somebody who could advocate for this bill and push it. What hes got is a guy who is dumber than a sack of hair and has no grasp of anything about the issues of health care, including the words health and care. This is not a man who can help Mitch Mcconnell push this
through and all hes done is divide the republican caucus. For instance, he made an enemy for life of dean heller when he put a Million Dollars of worth of tv up of a republican senator who wasnt tow whaeg want. He wants a when, a ceremony, a piece of cake and a pat on the head. To say time win here wins. But mcconnell cant count on trump. Trump is going to be there who has the potential to set the whole oblg fire at any moment. Heller announced he was opposed. He seemed like pretty hard no. How does that max with what youre seeing now in terms of how much command you have over this Health Care Bill . Well, it is a big mystery, were very worried about that. Were really focused on what the president promised. Nobody will lose coverage. Nobody will pay more. Nobody will get kicked around with the preexisting condition. And he promised i wont cut medicaid and i wont give a tax break to the wealthiest. So our whole thing is, whatever
you do, if you give us a sploogs meets those promises, were going to be all for you. But were not going to vote for something that shatters the promises you made. Thus far, the House Version and the senate version, it absolutely shatters them. Do you think the president understands that these bills break promises he made . I think he must. When you say nobody will lose coverage and the cbo says how about 22 Million People . The evidence is right in his face. So i sort of conclude that maybe the promises arent that important to him. I felt that all along the way too. I want you to look at something theyve said, in
normal realtime dollars concerns, it goes up every year he and therefore it hand been cut is that therefore the promise has not been violated. I think thats completely wrong. If medicare is growing and medicaid costs are growing and then you wax ratchet the care down, thats why the cbo says youre cutting 800 billion out of medicaid program. And just think about the fact that under obamacare, preexisting conditions were now covered. Were talking about people with diabetes, cancer, people who have been turned down, who had no home of getting health care. All of a sudden under obamacare, now these preexisting conditions were covered. Theres nothing in trump care that can actually match that. Basically what they were going to do was leave it up to the states, literally to decide whether or not they were going to cover preexisting conditions. And there are other aspects that would be detrimental. What youre describing, the ability to price differentiate is in the house bill. It is a little unclear how much thats in the senate which is being considered. I wonder if you think it is interesting that theyve seen, the white house and the advocates, dont seem to be defending the bill on its own terms. But rather in these terms of, it Doesnt Cut Medicaid and will cover more people. Thats not true. Take for example, the state of kentucky. Almost onethird of those
people. In state are covered by medicaid. So theyre talking about eliminating 700 billion in trump care bill. So thats no way they can say that theyre going to do more coverage than obamacare. So i dont really know what theyre talking about. Do you feel like, i guess ill ask the question that i asked senator kane before. Is there any Common Ground . Or has the process been so fundamentally dishonest that there is nothing to talk about . I dont know. A long time ago democrats recognized that despite obamacare was extraordinary in the way that it offered insurance to so many millions who had not been able to get insurance they realized it was not a perfect bill. And they would be willing to talk with republicans about it. But no, this new president guaranteed in the campaign that he was going to undo obamacare on the first day of his presidency. And he talked about how it was no good, that they were going to destroy it. What theyve discovered is that many publics know that obamacare is good for their district. And theyre not about to go home having voted for it. You take senator capito, for example. I understand in west virginia, they have largest coverage of medicaid patients in the country. So i think of course we know now that not enough senators were willing to vote for trump care and thats why they could not
